The Town Crier is evolving!
Whatever the saying, we are definitely on the right side of summer! The daffodils are all in bud and looking around my garden this morning, the sure signs of Spring are there to see, although, with the unusually warm weather we have had towards the end of February one can't help thinking the snow will come back and bite us on the backside in April!!!!!

In this month's edition we feature Trowbridge, specifically the famous indoor market. We have a new Home from Home Feature which we will run regularly so keep your eyes peeled for the latest trends for your home.

Thinking about buying an electric bike? As the ways in which people get from A to B continues to evolve, more and more of us are looking at electric bikes as not just a novelty but as an increasingly convenient means of tackling hills, speeding up commutes, and continuing to enjoy one of the healthiest recreational pursuits available long into our later years. Across the world, the e-bike industry is starting to shift through its gears. Global sales of e-bikes are predicted to reach 40 million by 2023 and there are already more e-bikes than cars on roads throughout Europe and China. Safe to say, then, that e-bikes are here to stay and that pioneers such as MARK 2 in Norwich, Norfolk are at the vanguard of one of the most exciting, efficient, and life-enhancing new means of urban and recreational transport. For us, it’s not enough to be more convenient, healthy, and environmentally friendly, an electric bike must also be great fun to ride. Fortunate, then, that the MARK 2 range is one that people can’t wait to take for a spin. No wonder. The beauty of a MARK 2 e-bike is that with the flick of a switch you can add power to your pedalling, turning mountains into molehills, making long journeys a jaunt, and headwinds a breeze.

Aesthetically, it’s a fantastic looking bike that just happens to be electrically assisted. It’s the reason we integrated the battery and motor into the design of the bike frame. No obvious electronics. No e-bike stigma. Just a relatively low-price tag, tiny running costs, and superb build quality, what’s not to love? Come and visit us in our new store in the heart of Pewsey to see our great electric bikes. We have the electric bike for you. Whether you are looking for an everyday commuter or an off road bike with superb performance when the going gets rough, visit our store today! TAKE YOUR FUNDRAISING TO NEW HEIGHTS FOR WILTSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE! ADVENTURE seekers who want to get off the ground can take part in new and exciting events while raising funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance. The charity’s 2019 bumper events calendar includes an abseil, skydive and a Snowdon challenge. New this year is a 200ft abseil down Avon Gorge on 14 April, plus a triple challenge involving cycling, climbing and kayaking in Snowdonia National Park on 7-8 June. A skydive at Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury, on 2 June, is the other main challenge event. Kenresa Stratford, events co-ordinator at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We are delighted to launch our 2019 events calendar and we hope there is something that will appeal to everyone. This year we have some really exciting new challenges - an abseil down Avon Gorge and our Snowdon Challenge – plus our popular skydive. “With our new challenges we wanted to offer our supporters something different that will really push them to get out of their comfort zone or a tick off their bucket list and we hope these events offer just that. “Participating in our events is a great way to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance, while taking on the challenge of experiencing 14

something that you may never have considered before. “We rely on donations to keep saving lives and have to raise £3.75 million a year. We are not funded directly by the Government and receive no National Lottery grants.“ For people who prefer land-based events there are walking and running challenges to get involved in to support Wiltshire Air Ambulance, including the Devizes Half Marathon on 7 April, the Royal Wootton Bassett Triathlon on 12 May and the Race to the Stones on 13-14 July. In addition, the charity’s Ambassadors, Nick and Annette Mason, are once again opening the gardens at Middlewick House, Corsham, on 3-4 August (also raising funds for The Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust), while in Air Ambulance Week, from 9-15 September, supporters will be encouraged to dress in yellow and green to match the colours of the charity’s helicopter and bring £1 to school or work.
For more information and how to get involved in the events supporting Wiltshire Air Ambulance, go to the charity’s website www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk/events/

Trowbridge Market
Opening Hours: Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm
HISTORY I
n 1086, the time of the Domesday Book Trowbridge was just a settlement with a population of about 120. However, by the 12th century Trowbridge became the centre for surrounding villages. In 1200 the Lord of the Manor was granted a market charter, giving the
right to hold markets in Trowbridge helping it become a small town. As well as weekly markets Trowbridge had an annual fair, which attracted buyers and sellers from a much wider area. This makes Trowbridge one of the oldest market towns in the country. In 1860, William Stancomb, offered to build the town’s first Market Hall, on a plot adjacent to his home, The Limes. 2 years later, in 1862, the Hall opened for traders.
A large cattle market was later added at the rear followed by the erection of Castle Place shopping centre in 1974.

Place the spinach in a large pan with a knob of butter. Cover and cook over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes until the spinach has wilted. It will seem to almost disappear! Drain the cooked spinach in a colander and press to squeeze out any excess water. Roughly chop, then mix with the rest of the creamy sauce ingredients. Taste and season well.

Dedicated to their community, John Williams Heating Services, is also known for the charitable projects they support and the community events they sponsor every year including the Chippenham Half Marathon, the Chippenham Soap Box Derby and the Chippenham Christmas Light Switch On.
Their gala ball, taking place on Saturday April 13 at the Neeld Community and Arts Centre in the High Street, will raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Tickets are £30 each. This charity is close to John and Debbie’s hearts after Steve Williams, John’s father, passed away suddenly in December 2017 due to heart failure at the age of 75. John has already personally raised £1,500 for the charity by running the Chippenham Half Marathon. Debbie said: “Running a small business is hard work and also a huge privilege and we believe in celebrating every milestone as well as giving back. This event allows us to celebrate with friends, families and fellow business owners while doing something good to support research into heart disease – something which has affected our family and many others.” John said: “We want to celebrate with everyone who has been part of our journey in business and thank them for their support and loyalty over the last 15 years. We could not have imagined when we started out where we would be today.”

MAD AS A MARCH HARE!
If you are ever lucky enough in Springtime to be close enough to a field where rabbits skip merrily through the grass, you might also see the comical sight of large rabbit like creatures with long upright ears charging after each other, only to come to a dead stop, rear up on their hind legs, and proceed to knock seven bells out of each other. These antics are played out over and over again until, as though tired of their “game” they both lop away out of sight, the winner to find a lady love ready for his advances. As they behave quite mad in their breeding season, which is always March, the phrase “mad as a march hare eventually came about and is now a common phrase used to describe anyone considered full of daft behaviour, silly ideas, or just plain crackers. That phrase is much older than you’d imagine, being coined around 1520 and in medieval times up to around the present day, could be considered a derogatory description,
unless, as is the case today, used in fun. The hares latin name is Lepus Europaeus, which shows it was a creature widely known in Greece. It is well known, as are its smaller cousins, the rabbit, almost over the entire world, its fur used for all manner of clothing and its meat used for the cooking pot. In Judaism however, the rabbit is considered unclean and not to be used in any way whatsoever, for although it chews its cud, it does not have a divided hoof. That must seem a little strange to us not of their faith, but it is true nonetheless. Rabbits and hares are both well known for their somewhat abundant fertility, and as such were once ancient symbols of fertility worshipped by the Aztecs, who were paranoid both about fertility and the failure of their crops – no
doubt due to the voracious appetites of the furry creatures. The Aztecs believed the animals survived on their wits alone, so had they even realised their crop failure was due mainly to them, no doubt they would still have treated them as some sort of deity and worshipped them. Traditionally the boxing hares and fluffy rabbits, in some cultures are still seen as symbols of fertility, abundance, comfort and vulnerability. Also for sentiment, desire, and understandably – procreation. By Jo Deacon 2019

MOTHERING SUNDAY
or Mother’s Day? Falling on Sunday 31st March this year, Mothering Sunday is a tradition that can be dated back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”
In the 16th century, the practice of returning to one’s ‘mother church’ – the main church in a parish or diocese - for a service on the fourth Sunday in Lent became the basis for Mothering Sunday. Whilst it is celebrated on different days depending on where you are in the world, the modern-day sentiment is much the same. Anna Jarvis from West Virginia, wanted to honour her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honour all mothers because she believed a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". In 1908 she held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton and by 1911 most states were observing the holiday. As things progressed however, it was clear that she fully objected to the commercialisation of the holiday and that profit shouldn’t be made from it.
That said, it is true that we all enjoy being able to spoil our mums (or other mother figures) on this particular day. Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day? Mothering Sunday is the traditional name for the fourth Sunday in Lent – three weeks before Easter – celebrated by Christians mainly in Europe, and is treated as a day to shower mums with gifts. But Mother’s Day is now the modern name but the premise remains the same.

March 31st is Mothers’ Day and I wonder if I’m the only mum who finds it irritating? I mean, I love flowers and chocolates as much as anyone, but I value them more when they come ‘just because’, rather than because Clinton Cards emailed a prompt. And don’t get me started on Primary schools and their ‘Mothers’ Day mornings. Rearranging my working day so my child won’t be disappointed by my absence is stress I don’t need…I thought Mothers’ Day was supposed to be about me! No, Mothers’ Day feels phoney. My husband is a hands-on dad, who knows how to cook and wield a vacuum cleaner; but if I didn’t remind him about Mothers’ Day he’d forget, and so would the kids, because he wouldn’t remind them.
which wasn’t my aim, because I didn’t care.
post-it that read ‘For Mothers’ Day because I know it’s your favourite’; and a few weeks after that my nine-year-old drew me the most beautiful picture of a dragon because he knows I like dragons.
So, we had a chat. I told them I knew they loved me, and Mothers’ Day wasn’t important to me, but perhaps each of them could pick a time when they did something little and nice for me, when I least expected it, and tell me it was for Mothers’ Day. I don’t think I expected much to happen, other than to free them (and me) from social pressure, but a few weeks later my 12-year-old left a dark chocolate Bounty Bar on my desk one evening (food of the Gods and difficult to find!), with a little
Somehow those gifts felt more real than any I’d received before. I’ve not mentioned it again this year. Maybe they’ll remember, maybe they won’t. Maybe I’ll get another dark chocolate Bounty… I won’t complain. By Kath McLean

mmortal Sport’s Stourhead Weekend offers family fun for athletes of all abilities.
the Weekend takes place at Stourhead National Trust, Wiltshire, on 11th and 12th May 2019. The weekend is fun for the whole family, with a 10k race, sprint and half triathlons, kids fun run, and access to the National Trust estate. The event is Immortal Sport’s first outdoor swim of the year, and is the only opportunity to swim in Stourhead’s famous lake. Immortal Stourhead offers a unique and beautiful location for the whole family to get involved. For seasoned athletes, there is the chance to win the Triple Crown.

Not only is the Stourhead triathlon the only opportunity to swim in the beautiful Stourhead lake all year, visitors can also enjoy one of the country’s best loved National Trust properties when the competition is over. The beautiful Stourhead house is surrounded by picturesque grounds, and has a pub and café on site. The event is an attainable goal for first time triathletes, a positive start for new runners aiming for a 10k, and a unique opportunity for seasoned competitors, that keeps people coming back year after year. Stourhead National Trust’s Garden and Estate Manager, Alan Power, has competed in the Stourhead triathlon weekend. He said: “The Immortal events at Stourhead are very close to my heart. I manage the gardens and the estate at Stourhead and have been

running around the estate training for different events for over 20 years… Seeing the swimmers, cyclists, and runners over the years leave their heart and soul all over this amazing event is truly inspiring. The support they receive from friends, family, and strangers is wonderful to see. One of the most important aspects to me is the respect and care shown by everyone during the event for Stourhead, this applies to the team who set up and organise the event, the competitors, and the supporters, its amazing and really appreciated. “I will be running the 10k in 2019 and may well be back in the water in 2020. There’s a compelling draw about this event and I can't quite place what makes me want to do it again, but that’s the Immortal Events at Stourhead: compelling, amazing, beautiful… and not easy!”
Immortal Sport’s 2019 season kicks off with the Yeovil Half Marathon on 31st March, the Wincanton Triathlon, on 28th April, which acts as a great target for anyone picking up running in 2019, and good preparation for the Brighton and London Marathons for more experienced athletes. Jody Foy, Immortal Sport Director, said: “The Immortal Stourhead Weekend is one of our favourite events of the year. It’s great to see familiar faces returning year after year, and it goes to show what an inspirational and unique event Stourhead offers for both competitors and spectators. “We understand the passion and dedication that goes into training for these events, and hope that our unbeatable locations are as rewarding as crossing the finish line.”

CHALLENGE E JULIA’S HOUSE SEEKS PARTICIPANTS FOR 2019 CHALLENGE EVENTS. Julia’s House,
the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity, is inviting people to sign up to one of their Challenge fundraising events for 2019. The five events offer an exciting opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and achieve something truly amazing, whilst raising funds to help children living with life-limiting conditions. Choose from a Jurassic Coast trek, a tandem skydive, two cycle challenges – one through Mallorca’s stunning coastal scenery or one closer to home in the Dorset/Wiltshire countryside - or you may prefer to pull on your running shoes and take part in the popular Bournemouth Marathon Festival.
“By signing up to one of our 2019 Challenge events you can make a big difference to the lives of local, lifelimited children and their families,” explains Hannah Miller, Challenge Events Manager for Julia’s House. “We rely on events like this to help us throw a lifeline to mums and dads facing their own enormous challenges every day.” The season begins on 8 June with the Jurassic Coast Trek – a challenging 13 or 26 mile hike which takes
in breathtaking views along Dorset’s stunning coastline. Begin the walk at Osmington for the full trek, passing landmark sights including Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, or join the trail at Kimmeridge for a shorter option as you make your way to Acton Field Campsite near Swanage. All participants will be able to celebrate their achievements with a complimentary hog roast and glass of prosecco at the finish line. Could you be brave for just one minute to help a child feel brave for a lifetime? Take part in The Big Jump on 3 August and experience the thrill of a tandem skydive, jumping from 13,000 feet under the control of an experienced instructor. A dedicated contact at Julia’s House will give you one-toone support all the way and will be there on the day to watch your jump at the Army Parachute Association near Salisbury. New for 2019 is the Mallorca Cycle Challenge (12-16 September), an epic 4-day adventure during which you will conquer the best and most picturesque climbs on the island, including the iconic Sa Colbara, Puig Major and the breathtaking Cap de Formentor.

The
t o o b n e Dr.MaRt
When you read the words Dr Martens, what do you think of? Skinheads? Clowns? Workmen? Or high fashion? Because in spite of being associated with all the groups above, Dr Martens have remained one of the most consistently cool items of clothing in the past 50 years. They really were invented by a doctor too, Dr. Klaus Maertens, a German army doctor. He injured his foot while skiing and found standard issue WWll army boots very uncomfortable and not at all conducive to recovery. So, he designed his own shoe, which replaced the leather soul with one which had air-cushioning. Originally the boots were sold as orthopaedic devices and bizarrely the majority of its customers for the first fifteen years were housewives, mainly over forty years old. But then an advert for the boots with the aircushioned sole caught the eye of the Griggs family, who ran a shoe company in Britain, specialising in sturdy work boots, and they bought the patent. They made a few tweaks to the design, including reshaping the heel, and they also anglicised the name. The classic yellow-stitched Dr. Martens AirWair boot was launched on April 1st, 1960. The date gave rise to the name 1460. This footwear was no April Fool joke though. The boots quickly became popular with factory workers, postmen and police officers. But these were not the kind of people known for inspiring fashion choices so how did Dr. Martens become so cool? It started with youth sub-cultures, like Mods and Skinheads, who adopted the boots as symbols of working-class pride. There was some irony in the fact that when these groups clashed with police BOTH sides were wearing
Dr. Martens! Pete Townsend of The Who is generally credited with giving Dr. Martens international exposure, when he chose to wear them on stage at concerts. From about 1966 they began to gain fashion status, generally by groups who associated themselves with antestablishment values. Punks, Goths, New Wave and Grunge groups all embraced the Dr. Marten, and they gradually became more mainstream with Britpop. But by the new Millennium sales were dropping. The Dr. Marten 1460 was seen as old. Eventually the company moved production to China. In 2004 a new line of footwear was introduced, deliberately designed to appeal to younger buyers. They were softer, easier to break in and had a translucent heel. This paid off and sales began to climb again. In 2012 Dr. Martens had its best year for sales ever. Shortly after they were sold to the investment firm Permira, and have continued to rise in popularity ever since, becoming a mainstream wardrobe staple. I wonder what the original Dr. Martens would make of all that! By Sarah Davey

A Neff hide and slide oven is perfect space saver for narrow kitchens or in order to accommodate an island. Blues and greys are gaining momentum, especially with the combination of two shades of colour ie light blue on wall cupboards and dark blue base units. The kettle days are numbered with many people opting for a hot water tap for speed and convenience.
For most people the kitchen is the hub of the home. This is the room where family and friends gather for home cooked meals, conversations and socialising. To create this larger room it sometimes requires opening up into the room next door. A large drench showerhead above can be combined with a separate sliding rail to shower at a lower level, plus a natural stone seat makes showering suitable for all ages.
Many bathrooms are quite small so storage is essential. This can be created in the form of a vanity unit with an inset basin and a natural stone surround which is not only practical but also adds a very luxurious stylish feel to the room. Wall recesses for shampoos and shower gels are also a clever and practical idea for storage of bottles so they don’t end up in the shower tray spoiling the look. Wall hung toilets and vanity units make cleaning the bathroom floor easier plus underfloor heating adds to the ultimate feeling of luxury.

Family bathrooms are practical first — used primarily by children, they should be safe, spacious and ideally incorporate lots of storage to help keep clutter to a minimum. on painted units rather than overpowering the space with a dark colour. Use a bright, neutral colour on the other walls to contrast with the blue and balance the room. The obvious choice, of course, is white but you may introduce a touch of the nautical by doing so. Avoid this by using a lighter grey or cream instead.
Using blue in your home does not mean that you will feel cold - coupled with the right accent colours you can create an inviting and fresh space that invigorates the senses.
Farrow and Ball have a beautiful range of colours to choose from, all of which can be purchased directly online or from a local trade store.
Make sure you have a reasonable amount of natural light in the room you’re redecorating, or go for lots of low level LEDs to generate a splash of light along kickboards and plinths.

In a Heartbeat... What are ectopic beats? Ectopic heartbeats are extra heartbeats that occur just before a regular beat. Ectopic beats are normal ad usually they are not a cause for concern. About 70% of medically normal adults without any symptoms at all have ectopic beats if monitored over 24 hours. They are far less common in children and are more likely to be a result of an underlying heart abnormality in those cases.
There are two types of ectopic beat: PAC - Premature atrial contractions, which begin in the upper chambers of the heart.
They can then become hyper-aware of any perceived differences in rhythm, and this can feed their anxiety. Most GPs can diagnose ectopic heartbeats from symptoms and by listening with a stethoscope. Sometimes they will arrange a precautionary electrocardiogram (ECG). If someone is aware of their ectopic beat only when they are sitting quietly, this is less of a concern than if the ectopics become noticeable after exercise, such as running upstairs.
PVC - Premature ventricular contractions, which begin in the lower chambers of the heart.
Ectopics are also of more concern if there is a history of a previous heart attack, or a family of heart disease. A GP will want to rule out complications such as ventricular tachycardia and arrhythmia.
An ectopic beat might be felt as an extra awareness of the heart beating; a feeling of faintness; a sensation of the heart stopping for a second, or a fluttering sensation in the chest.
If further investigation is required the GP might order an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), or a coronary angiography, an MRI, a CT scan, or exercise testing.
The fact that some people become aware of their ectopic beats doesn’t automatically mean there is a problem. Most commonly people who become aware of their ectopic beats are also susceptible to anxiety. What tends to happen is that during an episode of anxiety their system is flooded with adrenalin and their heart begins to race.
In most cases ectopic heartbeats do not require treatment; however, there are certain well-known triggers. It can be helpful to review all medications and their possible interactions, stop smoking, reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, and reduce stress and anxiety as much as possible.
They become aware of their heart racing, and then suddenly they experience a (perfectly normal) ectopic beat, only it feels anything but normal to them because their heart is already racing.
Remember, most ectopic heartbeats are not a cause for concern, but if they are persistent, or you are worried, then consult your GP. By Louise Addison

Local independent retailer, The Healthy Life Co Devizes, has some exciting news! Justina Pettifer, eco-warrior and owner of The Healthy Life Co is always on the look out for new ways to reduce her impact on the planet’s resources. Much of this work involves finding ways to reduce plastic waste. So it’s with pride, that Justina and her team can announce that The Healthy Life Co have embarked on a plastic free journey. They’ve made the decision to remove single-use plastics from their shelves and have installed a refill system in their shop. The refill system covers household products including washing up liquid, fabric softener, toilet cleaner, multipurpose household cleaners and hand soap. It also includes foods too, including seeds, nuts, dried fruit, flour and porridge oats. Justina and her team plan to add more to their refill service, so these products are just the tip of the iceberg! Customers can bring their own containers and buy as much or as little of each item as they like. Not only have they taken this fabulous step towards being plastic free, they’ve also launched a new online store, offering 14,000 healthy life products. (Which they’re led to believe is more than Amazon stocks.) They’ve embraced technology to offer their customers a unique service for such a small independent retailer. They’ve made it easy for customers to filter the products – filters include gluten free, dairy free, vegan, organic, British made and more. They’re also now offering a click and collect service to help engage the local community and a courier service for those further afield. Justina says that by making such a large range of products available online, on an easy to navigate website, she hopes that people make a choice to support a small, independent business. What is Functional Medicine and why should we care? by Helen Adams of Oakmead Clinic Too often we have conditions which are hard to treat we often visit the GP, but there’s no real answer for us. That’s why we should care and take notice of Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine is all about you – it’s your story and how a myriad of causes throughout life can contribute to the set of symptoms we know as illness. It started in America nearly 30 years ago and is now practised by doctors and nutritionists worldwide. To date there are only about 25 fully qualified practitioners in the UK and only 16 of those are nutritionists. Functional medicine uses food as the first line of treatment before medication. This doesn’t mean you should stop taking medications - it means you should see them as a “pill for an ill” – prescribed in order to manage symptoms. If changes to your diet and lifestyle reduce your symptoms, then a conversation with your doctor should take place to ensure you are taking only as much as you need. This can reduce the problem of ‘poly-pharmacy’ where one drug is prescribed to manage the side-effects of another drug. Lifestyle is incredibly relevant – from the amount of daily movement to the ability to cope with stress, and ‘me-time’ for better resilience to deal with the knocks of daily life. Impacts on the immune system can result in all sorts of chronic health conditions, from auto-immune diseases to type 2 diabetes. What would you expect from my consultation? I will ask a lot of questions and then join the pieces together to get to the root cause of your issues. We may need some more detailed lab tests, and I will certainly want a food diary. I start from wherever you are right now, incorporating changes that are relatively easy and practical, and reviews are very important to see how your health is progressing.
To find out more visit www.oakmeadclinic.co.uk or call Wilf Adams on 07846 620453, or email: wilf@oakmeadclinic.co.uk

Lending support to Trindledown Farm making a difference....
Trindledown Farm is a rescue and rehoming centre for elderly domestic and field animals. This very unique rescue centre relies solely on fundraising and donations. All our animals are thoroughly spoilt with sofas and TVs in the dog’s rooms, the cats have heated pens and our ponies, sheep and 7 alpacas roam the 10 acres of pasture land. Elderly animals make great companions for people looking to rehome a pet and can often suit those with the most sedentary of lifestyles. Our rehoming process ensures we find the right home for each animal in our care. Visiting our centre to meet our staff who are here to help you find the right pet. We then want to see you 3 more times so that you and your pet can start to bond. A home visit allows us to discuss more about life with a rescue pet and to help you prepare for the new arrival. Together we complete the paperwork so you can bring your new pet home. For more information visit our website www.nawt.org.uk or call the centre.
We do corporate team building days, volunteer days, group tours which may be of interest. We would love to continue working with local businesses and any new businesses in the future. Trindledown Farm has been lucky enough to have groups from Vodafone, SSE and Nationwide last year, and this year we hope to extend our company links further. The Teams always give us great feedback from their days, enjoying the change of scenery, pace and challenges we set them. Jobs varying depending on the size of teams, skills, time they have and interests. Photography, painting and decorating, design, building, plumbing, electrical, displays, baking, and marketing, are just a few of the areas that teams have worked with us on, the list really is endless. If you would like to arrange a visit to our centre, we’d be delighted to give you a guided tour of the facilities and talk you through the work we do here at NAWT and our hopes for the future. Alternatively, if you’d like to discuss any aspect of our work in more detail, please contact us on 01488 638584.
Family attraction open 7 days a week! 11am—4pm ENTRY IS BY DONATION All proceeds go to rescue and rehoming elderly animals at the centre. Come and see farm animals and domestic pets. Dinosaur Cove: Charge of the Three-horned Monster by Rex Stone
The Secret Seven: The Humbug Adventure by Enid Blyton
Despite being extinct for 65 million years, dinosaurs still have the power to enthral young children and this series of books is sure to be popular with young readers who are building up the confidence to read alone. Jamie has recently moved to the south coast of England with his dad and into an old lighthouse with his grandad. Jamie’s dad has plans to turn the ground floor of the lighthouse into a Dinosaur Museum as the local area, known as Dinosaur Cove, is rich in Jurassic and Cretaceous fossils. However, what Jamie doesn’t expect to find is a hidden entrance to Dinosaur Island where there are real living dinosaurs. In this adventure Jamie and his new friend Tom discover what looks like houses on Dinosaur Island. Knowing people weren’t around at the same time as dinosaurs the boys decide to check them out with the help of Wanna, a friendly wannaosaurus. What will they find and how will the get through the huge pack of triceratops! A great read full of facts about dinosaurs means that the reader will learn without even realising!
For all of us our homes are the one place we feel safe. It is one of our human rights that no one can enter our home without due cause. For those of us who own our homes then they are also a financial investment and an investment for our children once we are gone. So, what if you came home one day to find a removal van outside your home. And someone else was moving in. This is what happens to Fi Lawson, one sunny winter day in January. There are no signs of her two young sons and her husband, Bram, just a family of strangers insisting that they £1.6 million house in a leafy suburb of London is now theirs. And so Fi’s life quickly unravels. This dual narrative novel tells the events leading up to that day from the point of view of both Fi and Bram, switching between their two accounts. At times this can lead to confusion as you forget that you know information from Bram that Fi doesn’t, but it is not a big issue.

Good READ
Has Bram cheated Fi out of her home and disappeared from the face of the earth? If he has why? This fast-paced thriller will have you guessing until the end, with twists and revelations throughout and asks if we ever really know what the closest people in our lives are going through?

THIS MONTH – HARDY ANNUALS Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants.
is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so
They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annualnovice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, friedegg plants (limnanthes), love-in-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded. The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine 74
The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2019
you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it. Next time you’re at the garden centre...walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year.

humane deterrence House mice (Mus musculus) populations may be controlled by non-lethal humane rodent deterrence or live trapping and relocation. To control mice by the methods that this advertisement describes is nothing short of heinous cruelty. Snap traps or the conventional mouse traps are lethal. They do not necessarily cause instant death by breaking the neck. They have been known to malfunction and instead of breaking the neck, they break the lower spine of the animal who dies a lingering and painful death. The lower extremities are paralyzed whilst the upper extremities are left sentient and in great pain.
76
The mouse, if not immediately plunged into shock, will struggle. Glue traps or glue boards may be equated to the most horrendous form of human execution known throughout history; crucifixion. They are responsible for incalculable animal suffering. The animal dies a very slow and painful death of starvation, terror, dehydration and shock. Often the skin comes off as they struggle to become detached from the glue. They may even gnaw their own limbs off. Glue traps are indiscriminate; they also trap kittens, insects, birds, other wildlife (some endangered like hedgehogs) and even infant children!
The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2019
Many supermarkets and hardware stores in the UK have discontinued retailing these instruments of cruelty. Mice are sentient animals with intelligence, sensitivity, a conscious awareness of their own existences and complex communication skills. They deserve our protection. To subject them to such cruelty as was suggested in the advertisement cannot in any way be condoned. It has no part in a civilized society.

WATERING & WELLIES
Starting Your Seeds Starting your seeds indoors isn’t for the fairweather gardeners. Tomatoes, peppers, melons, lettuce, onions, peas, winter squash and cabbage are great options to get started off from seed.
When the weather is colder and your hands are itching to get gardening again, starting your seeds indoors is the perfect way to combine comfortable potting with practical growing.
Choose from a local garden centre and store in a cool, dry place (my grandad used to use an old biscuit tin for this) and accumulate some suitable containers for each seed. Egg boxes, yoghurt cartons, or any waxed cardboard can be turned into fabulous little receptacles for a seed. Just make sure that you pop a drainage hole into the bottom of each one. With your container in hand, fill each little hole with a seed-starting mix. These are fine grained and shouldn’t be packed hard into the container because the seedling needs to be able to push through it without difficulty. These can be purchased from most garden centres but keep an eye out for the ones which are designed specifically for seeds rather than general potting. A tablespoon generally works quite well. Once you’ve filled the containers add in the seeds. Check the packet instructions but generally you’ll be putting one seed into each container.
80
The Town Crier Magazine | MARCH 2019
Cover with plastic and then find a warm spot to allow the seeds to germinate. The soil itself needs to reach the right temperature before most seeds will start to germinate so bear this in mind if you drop the heat in your house during the night over colder spells. Keep an eye on the seeds and once they have sprouted, remove the cover to allow the air to start circulating. If you don’t remove the lid you may risk moisture building up around the seedling and cause damping-off. Make sure you rotate the containers in the space you have available so that they each get as much light as possible. Water the seedlings and keep the soil moist with a spray bottle. Keep an eye on the size of the seedlings so that they don’t crowd each other. Prepare them for the move to outside by giving them a taster of the weather for an hour a day for a couple of weeks before the official planting. Make sure they are in a sheltered spot. In a few months you’ll be enjoying the fruits of your labour when the little seedlings turn into full blown plants ready for harvesting.

It has always been true to an extent but, since April 2015, HMRC can collect outstanding income tax via your tax code - meaning your employer must pay it to HMRC without you having a say. This can put a massive strain on people’s finances while HMRC gets paid before the mortgage etc. If you earn less than £30,000 p.a., HMRC will not collect more than £3,000 of unpaid tax per year – above this there is a graduated scale (up to a maximum of £17,000 per year). Also, the tax collected under PAYE cannot be more than 50% of gross wages or salary.

INCREASED DEMAND FOR SKILLS IN 2018 WILTSHIRE Air Ambulance has revealed how often it was called out to different parts of the county in 2018 as its total missions rose by 26%. The demand for the skills of the charity’s critical care team resulted in increased numbers of call outs to the Chippenham, Calne, Corsham and Malmesbury areas. Locations where Wiltshire Air Ambulance was called to once a week, on average, included the Chippenham area 79 and the Devizes area 75.

Beware the
Ides of March! “Beware the Ides of March!” I’ve heard this saying often throughout my life but only recently thought to find out about it. It’s actually a quote from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar. Early in the play a soothsayer declares it, forewarning of the eventual assassination of Caesar (apologies if that spoils the ending for anyone!)
But what are the Ides of March? In the ancient Roman calendar the Ides was one of three markers used each month, which related to the position of the moon. Ides comes from the Latin verb ‘to divide’. The Ides in March fell on the 15th and marked the full moon. It happens that Julius Caesar was murdered on March 15th, 44BC. He was stabbed to death by a group of Senators shortly after being declared ‘Dictator Perpetuus’, which means, ‘dictator for life.’ His death lead to the Liberators’ civil war and the new Principate period of the Roman Empire. So, the Ides of March is actually the anniversary of Julius Caesar’s murder and Shakespeare played on this with his oft-quoted soothsayer. People adopted the expression and it is still used as a warning that something bad could befall a person on this date.

There is also a lot of technology shoehorned into the Fiesta ST, which makes the car a pleasure to live with. Tech includes rear parking sensors, keyless entry and automatic air conditioning. As you would anticipate, the regular Fiesta's body has been jazzed up for the ST, and it is now 14 per cent stiffer due to some additional bracing on the Ford's underside. At the rear, there is a new stiff twist-beam torsion bar, and there is a completely new steering rack at the front. These are the most radical parts of their type ever installed into an onroad performance Ford. The steering is also 14 per cent quicker than the withdrawing Fiesta ST200.

What’s more, Ford Performance has added Ride Control 1 valving. What is that, you ask? Well, basically, the damping hardens when you are hammering into corners and relaxes off when you are taking it easy cruising along. Torque vectoring springs have also been builtin to give a snappier turn-in; it is all ingenious stuff for a sub-£23,000 hot-hatch. But that is not all when it comes to the Fiesta ST’s technology and engineering. For the first time, a limited slip differential has been incorporated into the Ford, too; it’s part of the £850 Performance Package which also comprises ‘Performance Shift Lights’ and launch control. The Blue Oval’s fierce little beast fires from 0-62mph in
a mere 6.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 144mph. Furthermore, selectable motoring modes permit you to elect relaxed or sportier settings for the steering, exhaust and, of course, the accelerator. The modes Normal, Sport and Track – each build up weight, noise and response the higher up the selection you go. In Track setting the traction control is turned off and the stability control is switched to ‘wideslip mode’. Certainly, the fresh Ford Fiesta ST is a talented hothatch that represents top value performance for weekend amusement. Only its overly sensitive steering and shuddering suspension might put you off using it as your daily ride.

DASH CAMS PREVENTION OF INSURANCE CLAIM SCAMS -
The dashboard camera, or dash cam, has become increasingly popular recently. So, should you think about buying one? A dash cam is a special camera that is mounted on a car dashboard for the purpose of recording sounds and images while you're driving. BUT WHY MIGHT YOU WANT ONE? First-hand evidence in case of a car accident - This is the main reason why people invest in one. If you are involved in a collision you can prove that it was not your fault by submitting the camera footage as evidence. It's a compelling reason for buying one.
REPORTING A DANGEROUS DRIVER - Sometimes
you see a driver do something so reckless and irresponsible right in front of you that you fear for the safety of other road-users. Reporting that person becomes much easier with evidence. In the US there are special channels for reporting dangerous drivers, with the aim of making roads safer for everyone. It is probable that the UK will follow suit.
Insurance fraud is a growing problem with vehicles. Some drivers purposely cause minor car accidents in order to put the blame on the other party, so they can extort money from the victim. The victim has no way of proving their innocence, so these people also fake injuries in order to collect the insurance money from their insurance companies. A dash cam will at least allow you to prove that you were not at fault in such a case.
IT KEEPS AN EYE ON YOUR CAR WHILE YOU ARE NOT IN IT! - Have you ever returned to your car in a
car park to find it's been scratched? Or are you sure the neighbour's children are scraping their bikes along the side of your vehicle when they squeeze past on the drive? A well-installed dash camera can efficiently record such events because most can be set to record even when the car engine isn't running. Some can even send all the data to your laptop or smart phone remotely, giving you peace of mind.
BECAUSE THE BEST CAMERA IS THE ONE YOU HAVE WITH YOU - It's not all about the car! Check
out online videos of dash cams capturing unexpected phenomena. A family of ducks stopping traffic in Birmingham, a plane crashing right in front of a guy driving down a highway, and one Russian car driver’s dash camera recorded an enormous meteor that EXTRA INSURANCE FOR PARENTS - We worry flew over Russia. The clip ended up being when our teens first start to borrow the car viewed millions of times on YouTube! that they may not stick to the rules of the road. Dash cams are set to become as necessary an Knowing that there is a dash cam monitoring addition to our driving life as sat-navs. If you their driving behaviour is an extra incentive for don't already have one, perhaps you should them to pay attention, or they might not be think about it. trusted to take the car out again!
