Chapel Plaister Along the B3109 near Corsham is a cluster of houses that comprises Chapel Plaister and in the centre of which is the Chapel itself. Its origins date from the 12th century and while it is still a working chapel, used every Sunday with a very popular service on Christmas Day, it has been many things besides and Photograph by Jerry Dix was eventually reconsecrated towards the end of the 19th century. Over recent years it has been the practice to open the Chapel for two hours every Wednesday afternoon during the Summer months so that our own parishioners who are less familiar with it can visit, as well as tourists and holiday makers travelling in the area. And so it will be again this year, beginning Wednesday 3 May until Wednesday 13 September from 2-4pm. There will be a steward in attendance who will try to answer any questions that visitors may have about the Chapel's varied history. A warm welcome is extended to everyone.

What’s On
Wellbeing within the Woodland Garden at Wiltshire’s Bowood Mindfulness Walks will be featured from Sunday 7th - Sunday 14th May With the recent unseasonally warm weather having brought forward the start of Bowood’s Woodland Garden season by a fortnight, do make sure to head over to this most picturesque Wiltshire landmark as soon as you possibly can! The annual six week season is awaited eagerly for months ahead of time only to whizz by all too quickly. Bowood’s acclaimed 70-acre Woodland Garden was originally due to re-open to the public on the 28th April but then the blooms were ahead of the game and so the season’s start was green-lighted just ahead of the Easter weekend - an unprecedented occurrence! Bowood’s magnificent display of rhododendrons, magnolias and azaleas reveal themselves in three distinct stages: the early flowering, the bluebell flush and then the appearance of the azaleas.
CHIPPENHAM SOAP BOX DERBY
Sunday 25th June from 11-4pm
Brought to you by Chippenham Connected and Chippenham Town Council, the Soapbox Derby will trial non-power assisted karts through the outlined course starting at the bottom of the Market Place, with competitors navigating through the High Street past crowds of spectators and businesses and finishes at The Bridge to win a range of coveted titles and trophies. Each hand-made kart will adhere to certain rules and regulations set out by our event experts, comprising of a non-motorised vehicle, which will be launched with a running push start by a team member and steered by the team’s driver. The run will be timed by our event marshals to determine our leader board and ultimate winners. All of the guidelines, and application forms, can be downloaded from www. chippenhamconnected.com/whats-on/soap-boxderby.aspx or collected from Chippenham Town Council. This is the perfect occasion for residents, students, businesses and visitors alike to channel their creativity to concoct the wackiest, weirdest, wildest and most wonderful homemade soapbox vehicles to complete a course throughout our town centre. A great opportunity to channel some good, competitive fun. 12
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
Not thrown off course, though, is the upcoming week of Mindfulness Walks (Sunday 7th - Sunday 14th, inclusive) encouraging visitors to connect with nature, mindful of the calm and stillness within their surroundings. It has been said that gardeners and florists are among the happiest workers and so as the Woodland Garden season gets into its stride, the sense of wellbeing promoted by garden visiting will be particularly highlighted. Coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Week (Monday 8thSunday 14th May), the daily one-hour Mindfulness Walks within the Woodland Garden will run from 9.30am to 10.30am, led by Linda Thomas from Malmesbury-based Mindfulminds. www.mindfulminds.co.uk. To book your place in advance, priced at £15 per person (with a contribution being donated from this price to the Mental Health Foundation), e-mail: houseandgardens@ bowood.org or call: 01249 810961. A mile from Bowood House and Gardens (between Calne and Chippenham. www.bowood.org), the Woodland Garden has its own dedicated entrance just off the A342 (the road to Devizes). Open daily from 11am-6pm, entrance is priced at £8 per adult (aged 13 and over) and £7.25 per senior citizen while children 12 and under are free of charge. To visit Bowood House and Gardens on the same day, the combined ticket price is £18.50 per adult and £16 per senior citizen. To check on the latest conditions of the Woodland Garden, call 01249 812102 or visit www.bowood.org/category/garden-diary/ for Lord Lansdowne’s updates.

John Collins during his skydive for Wiltshire Air Ambulance in August 2015.
Take the plunge and raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new airbase SUPPORTERS of Wiltshire Air Ambulance can take their fundraising to new heights by taking part in a skydive for the charity’s Airbase Appeal. The skydive will take place on Sunday 4 June 2017 at Old Sarum airfield, Salisbury, and participants will jump in tandem with an experienced, professional skydiver from 10,000 feet. The sponsorship raised by the jumpers will go to the charity’s Airbase Appeal, which is raising £1.25 million to complete the building and equipping of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new airbase at Semington, near Melksham. One of those who is taking part is John Collins, of Trowbridge, who undertook a skydive for Wiltshire Air Ambulance in August 2015 at Netheravon. Shortly afterwards he became a volunteer with Wiltshire Air Ambulance. John, who works as a butcher, said: “The skydive I did was brilliant. Looking at the scenery from that high up was awesome. I found raising the sponsorship was straightforward. When people realised I was raising money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance they were quite willing to donate and I raised about £600. “I’ve wanted to do another skydive and when I heard the charity was organising one to raise money for the new airbase I signed up. I enjoy being a volunteer with Wiltshire Air Ambulance. It’s good fun and the volunteers, charity team and aircrew are a great bunch of people. The new airbase will be custom-built and benefit the whole county for years to come.” Cheryl Johnson, Head of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Airbase Appeal, said: “We are delighted to offer this skydiving event to raise funds for our Airbase Appeal. Not only will you experience the dramatic scenery of Salisbury Plain from 10,000 feet, but you will also be helping us build a better future for your air ambulance by raising funds to complete our new airbase. For more information call the Charity Team on 01380 739453 or go to: www.wiltshireairbaseappeal.co.uk/ support-our-appeal/get-fundraising/ 18

The oldest car to register for the event so far is a 1925 Austin Heavy 12 Tourer, its first owner took it to Jersey but met a new lady and emigrated with her to South America telling the local garage to sell the car for him. Jersey was then occupied during WW2 by the German forces but decided the car was unsuitable for military purposes!! It remained unsold until the end of the war when it was bought by a returning Ex Japanese POW for 30/- (£1.50p) who used it for farm work. Repatriated in 1958 it was restored and now takes part in many charity events. This wonderful car took part in our Inaugural event last year and is driven by Mr Timothy Hills of Bristol. (Photo above left). Also taking part is a 1926 Buick 6 Tourer driven by Mr Patrick Leech (Photo below right). We also look forward to welcoming our mascot, Ollie the Navigator – hopefully returning after his success in the Inaugural event last year. Faithful friends and Teddy bears belonging to the Driver or passengers are encouraged. (Photo of Ollie below left). Half the proceeds will go to Dorothy House Hospice Care (DHHC) and half to local charities. Biddy Walcot from the Communications Team said “It is lovely to be a part of such a wonderful community event. We are so grateful for the support of Calne Rotary, and the funds raised will be used to directly support people with life-limiting illness, their families and carers in Calne and the surrounding areas. We are looking forward to welcoming all the drivers and spectators to Winsley.” The Rotary Club of Calne meets on Thursdays at 7.15pm in Calne – visit www.calnerotary.co.uk for details. What’s On
Bromham Carnival
PUZZLE CORNER
9th – 24th June 2017
Since 1960 Bromham Carnival has been a fixture in the village calendar. Over the years the Carnival has grown from a one day event run by the Village Hall Committee to raise money for improvements and upkeep of the village hall to the two week programme of events that is Bromham Carnival today. With the support of many local businesses and a team of hard working volunteers the Carnival continues to donate money back into the village, as well as supporting local charities such as the Air Ambulance and Julia’s House. The 2017 Bromham Carnival fortnight will start with Royalty Choosing on Friday June 9th and a packed programme of events will lead up to Carnival Day on Saturday June 24th. The Carnival procession, led by the Carnival Royalty, involving walkers, local schools, majorettes, bands and floats will start at The Pound Field at 2:00pm and make its way through the village to the Jubilee Field on New Road. Other events include a Car Boot Sale on Sunday June 11th at 2:00pm and a Teddy Bear Trail on Sunday June 18th. Full details of all the Carnival events can be found online at www.bromhamcarnival.co.uk and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ bromhamcarnival

CARLTON BUSINESS CENTRE
The Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charity Head Office has been based in the Carlton Business Centre since 2013. The Charity Team work hard to raise the profile of WAA and much needed funds, working closely with volunteers, supporters, donors, suppliers and those they fly to. In January 2015 WAA started operating a dedicated air ambulance which means they need to raise £3.25m a year. As a registered charity they rely almost entirely on public donations to keep flying. WAA are building a new airbase for their helicopter, aircrew and charity team at Outmarsh Farm, Semington, near Melksham. The site is ideally situated in central Wiltshire, allowing their helicopter to reach all parts of the county within 11 minutes. WAA have launched an Airbase Appeal to raise the remaining £1.25 million to build and equip their new airbase. www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk Below: Members of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Charity Team

THE REPAIR ACADEMY
Above: Doug North and Paul Bentley. Right: Alan Webb
THE REPAIR ACADEMY is a social enterprise that was set up on the Porte Marsh Estate, Calne in 2014. It aims to change the public’s opinions on waste and provide training and job opportunities and to reduce the amount of rubbish going into landfill, help people to gain skills for employment, and allow people to find lower cost, reconditioned white goods and furniture locally.
We are involved in recycling and upcycling white goods and furniture, all collected from local recycling centres, and we also provide training and work experience to young people, who either have educational needs, are unemployed or on probation. We have an on-site engineer who repairs the washing machines, dryers and cookers, which we then sell on through local charities: KFR in Devizes and Waste Not Want Not in Chippenham. Furniture is sold on eBay, Facebook and Gumtree. All proceeds go to Wiltshire Wildlife Trust and supports the work that they do. What does the Repair Academy do for the Calne Community? We make an environmental and a social contribution to the Calne Community: reducing the amount of items which go to landfill and recycling them, and providing training to young people who struggle in mainstream education, or who have taken a wrong turn in life, or are struggling to find employment. Through working with partners like The Hills Group, Wiltshire Council, KFR, Wiltshire College, Community First, Waste Not Want Not and Alabare, over 1050 vulnerable people and their families have received furniture and white goods through the work of the Repair Academy. 46
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
How can the Community help the Repair Academy? The main thing we need from the community is volunteers, either with or without experience. There are lots of opportunities for volunteers; from getting involved in working with students (if they are happy to do this) to giving a couple of hours to help paint/mend furniture. Everyone can also support us financially by buying our upcycled goods, either directly or via eBay. Please help the Repair Academy to get the word out to the Community, and please get in touch if you can help. www.wiltshirewildlife.org/repair-academy www.facebook.com Unit 3-5 Porte Marsh Industrial Estate, Calne, Tel: 07951 096210 Email: therepairacademy@gmail.com

Food & Drink
Chocolate Fondant Tart INGREDIENTS PASTRY 100g/3½oz plain flour 50g/1¾oz icing sugar 50g/1¾oz chilled butter, diced Yolk from 1 large egg 1 tbsp water
Preparation time: 45 mins (plus chilling time) Cooking time: 30 mins Serves: 6-8
FILLING 100g/3½oz butter 150g/5½oz dark chocolate (70%) 150g/5½oz golden caster sugar 75g/3oz plain flour 6 medium eggs TO SERVE Strawberries/raspberries Icing sugar Cream
FOR THE PASTRY Place the flour and icing sugar in a large bowl. Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and water and mix quickly so that it comes together to form a firm dough. Wrap in cling film and leave to rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C/ Gas 6 (180C fan). Dust the work surface with flour and then roll out the pastry to form a circle about 5cm/2in larger than your flan tin. Line the tin with the pastry. Pop it into the fridge to chill for a further 15 minutes. You now need to blind-bake the pastry. To do this prick the base of the pastry with a fork then line the pastry case with a circle of greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans (these are ceramic beads, but you can use lentils or dried beans if you don’t have any). 48
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
Bake the pastry for 10 minutes, or until just lightly golden-brown, then remove the paper and the beans and return the tart to the oven to cook for a further 5-7 minutes, or until golden-brown and dried out. FOR THE FILLING Melt the butter in a medium pan over a low heat, then add the chocolate and stir until melted, smooth and glossy. Remove from the heat and beat in the sugar and flour, then beat in the eggs, one at a time. Place the pastry case on a baking tray. Pour the chocolate mixture into the pastry case, filling it almost to the top then place in the oven. Bake for 1012 minutes, or until just set around the edges and still slightly wobbly in the centre. Remove from the oven. You can serve it warm with raspberries or strawberries, or allow it to cool and dust with icing sugar.

Ready for Revision Exam time is stressful for the whole family. So what’s the best way to cope? There’s no way round it, the answer has to be planning and preparation.
S
ET up your revision timetable as early as possible, that way you can pace yourself. It’s too tempting to put everything off then face a last-minute panic.
Emotions run high around exam time anyway, so it is better to snack on nuts, seeds and fruit, which provide a slow, steady release of glucose.
How do you study best? Some people prefer to spend a whole day on one subject, others prefer to break their time into smaller blocks and tackle several subjects in short burst. Whichever you choose, make sure you take a short break every hour or so. Pop outside, stretch your legs, have a drink and maybe a snack. Oxygen, nutritious food and water are essential for concentration and mental alertness.
Our brains also depend on proper hydration to function optimally. Brain cells require a delicate balance between water and various elements to operate. Research has found that if we’re even slightly dehydrated we find it more difficult to focus. Aim to drink around up to 1.5-2 litres of water,
Effective brain function relies on neurotransmitters, which are chemicals made from amino acids. These are found in food rich in good quality protein, like lean meat, fish, soya and beans. In order to convert the amino acids into neurotransmitters the body also need vitamins and minerals, so top up on fruit and vegetables. Refined sugar, found in sweets and chocolate releases glucose too quickly into the bloodstream and this can cause mood swings.
WHAT TYPE OF LEARNE R ARE YOU? Visual learners - prefer note cards and tend to map out info rmation on paper. Auditory learners - pre fer to read their notes aloud, and list en to them being played bac k. Kinaesthetic learners need action – Record your voice and play back the information while wa lking. Take revision notes to the gym and read while running on a treadm ill, even sitting on a swing readin g notes can work.
diluted fruit juice or herbal teas per day. Drinks rich in caffeine, such as Red Bull or coffee trigger production of the stress hormone cortisol which can make you feel even more edgy and nervous, and make it harder to focus and find the right words under exam pressure. Gentle exercise, such as walking, or cycling, in between study improves the blood circulation to the brain and actually relieves stress, making you feel more relaxed. On the day of an exam focus on breathing; slow deep breaths in and out will help to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Try not to engage in pre-or post exam discussion, as this can make you feel anxious. If you’re well prepared and wellrested then you are ready. But remember they are only exams. They are one measure of your ability taken at one point in time. They do not relate to who you are as a person, or how well you will ultimately do in life. All you can ever do is try your best on the day.

Stress free holiday packing Your long awaited and well deserved holiday is only a few days away, but first you have to pack! For many people, packing a suitcase can be stressful. How do you achieve that perfect holiday capsule wardrobe? We asked local House of Colour Stylist, Karen Hayter for some top tips: Skincare & make-up Remember to keep your skincare and make-up to under 100mg so that you’ll be OK at the airport. Where necessary, decant into good quality travel bottles. With make-up, you can probably get away with waterproof mascara, a coloured eyeliner, your favourite lipstick, bronzer and a kabuki brush. If you’re reluctant to leave foundation at home, opt for a dual mineral compact. It’s especially brilliant in hot weather. Mix and match Once you know your best colours, and the styles that work for you, packing a capsule wardrobe becomes easier. It’s not an exact science, but for your average beach holiday, here’s a rough guide: • 3 camis and 2 long-sleeved tops in great colours, 1 or 2 neutral cardigans or wraps • 1 or 2 casual dresses or skirts, 1 smarter dress • 3 pairs neutral coloured leggings or trousers • 2 swimsuits or bikinis, a squashable hat, sarongs, scarves or pashminas • Depending on your style, you may want to substitute 1 or 2 of the skirts or casual dresses or trousers for a couple of pairs of shorts. Believe it or not, as long as you’ve got the colours right, you can create well over 50 outfits from these 21 items and that’s before you start adding in your favourite jewellery and an amazing belt. By the way, jewellery is another opportunity to use your best colours or choose plain metals and let the colour of your clothes take centre stage.
Get rolling You’re aiming for 3 rolled sausages. Start by laying out your tops and dresses, one on top of the next, with the most crushable fabrics on the bottom. Then roll them into a sausage with the most crushable on the outside. The crease-prone items will be padded out by the less fussy fabrics in the middle. Trousers and skirts go in the second sausage. Everything else goes in the third - swimwear, sarongs, pashminas and scarves. Large jersey infinity scarves are great for holidays. They come in a huge range of colours and will take you into the evening by doubling as a bolero. Shoes It’s tempting to pack shoes for every occasion. But actually, you only need 4 pairs - flip flops, flats, heels and those contoured `fit flops’ that also come in sparkly finishes for the evening. And talking about sparkle, how about shoe clips? They’ll transform daytime flats into evening glamour in an instant. Follow these simple tips, don’t forget to add your underwear and a beach towel and everything will fit into a hand luggage size suitcase. Karen Hayter is a House of Colour Stylist based in Corsham. “I love helping clients to find the most amazing version of themselves. Looking your best isn’t reserved for the rich and famous. Everyone can use colour and style to enhance their own natural colouring, body shape and personality.” Karen offers small friendly classes in her home studio. If you’d like to find out more call her on 07463 662 707
One quick tip about patterns…. Try not to overdo them. If you’ve brought patterned tops, choose non-patterned trousers or skirts.

CUBA
There are few more fascinating and unique destinations than Cuba. With miles of golden beaches, rich colourful scenery and a proud cultural heritage this is a stunningly beautiful diverse country. HAVANA & WESTERN CUBA
VARADERO & NORTHERN CAYES
Havana is totally fascinating. Old Havana, the historic centre of the city, preserves a wealth of Spanish Colonial architecture and has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You need to experience a tour in an old American Classic Car and you will hear the infectious pulse of Salsa everywhere.
Around 2 hours from Havana, Varadero is Cuba’s premier beach resort with hotels stretching along the fabulous beaches, constantly cooled by tropical breezes.
2 hours to the west of Havana, Vinales Valley makes a fascinating contrast to the city. Sleepy and rural it still sees tobacco and other crops farmed by traditional methods and has stunning limestone scenery. Las Terrazas is a unique mountain community and popular for walkers and bird watching.

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
To the east, Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Ensenachos and Cayo Las Brujas are small islets connected to the mainland by a causeway, with idyllic beaches and sparkling seas.
TRINIDAD The colonial centre of Trinidad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with cobbled streets, terracotta rooftops and pastel coloured houses and is easily explored on foot. Nearby is the picturesque emerald valley which was once the centre of the sugar trade industry and home to the plantations of the 18th and 19th century. EASTERN CUBA Set between the Sierra Maestra Mountains and the coast, Santiago de Cuba is Cuba’s second biggest city. Its people have a great passion for salsa and carnival and residents are proud that the area is known as the “Cradle of the Revolution” Cuba is changing fast, so this is a great time to visit while it’s exotic and distinctive style remains.
Pebbles can arrange tours and beach stays to give you a taste of the real Cuba from our own personal experiences.

Practice Praises
I
by Emmy Butcher
HAVE A FRIEND who reads this Health Matters article every month, he says he can’t wait for the Town Crier to arrive and flicks straight to this page to see what genius musings have been published in my name. Sadly, when we last spoke he was very disappointed in me – ‘Emmy, your last article was boring’, he retorted! I didn’t take offence, he meant it in a constructive way…I think. My friend’s remark got me thinking about feedback and how important it is. Bill Gates is quoted as saying ‘your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning’ and this is something I try and instil in my team here at Beversbrook. I love hearing from our Patients on how well we are performing – good or bad. My colleagues are primed to send me details of any grumbles or gripes that are made in passing and equally encouraged to pass on any words of thanks or praise. All quotes, quips, complaints and comments are discussed with relevant teams in meetings and when they are significant enough we will carry out an investigation which involves the whole Practice. This investigative process is not just for when things go wrong, but also for when things go right – because we want to make sure that we learn from the good stuff we do and replicate it as often as possible. Let’s face it, no-one likes getting ill so making the ‘patient experience’ a pleasant one is a challenge in itself. As a Patient you can tell your GP Surgery what you think of them by using their Friends and Family test which is available in Practice. Patients of Beversbrook tell us what they like and what they don’t by visiting our dedicated patient feedback website www.iwantgreatcare.org. We also get feedback via our Facebook site and NHS Choices page. It’s worth a read and as you can see, we don’t always get it right. Patient feedback is invaluable so that we can make sure our quality of service is adequate for our patients. More importantly it provides us Practice Managers, who are generally tucked away in our cosy little offices, with the opportunity to see through the eyes of our Patients and consider improvements where needed. If we can make a patient’s visit to the Surgery a relatively pain free experience (symptoms aside) - then everyone is happy. 56
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
If you are not happy your Practice Manager certainly wants to hear about it. It’s advisable to do this in writing as it helps to ensure all your points are covered and it’s helpful to include any suggestions for what the Practice can change to prevent future complaints. In fact, this kind of feedback is welcomed by the NHS as a whole. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to your Practice about your experience you can always contact NHS England at England.contactus@nhs.net or on 0300 311 2233. They can also deal with complaints regarding dentists, pharmacies or optician services. Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group Patient Advice and Liaison Services (CCG PALS) can help with any complaints regarding social or secondary care providers on 0300 123 2103 or e-mail them at WCCG.complaintsandpals@nhs.net. Some healthcare providers, such as hospitals, also have their own PALS department who can help with all kinds of patient enquiries, not just complaints. If you feel your complaint needs further investigation you can also speak to the NHS Ombudsman and details of how to escalate your concern can be found at www.ombudsman.org.uk. Healthwatch, the consumer champion for health and social care will also be interested to hear your concerns and can help you find a local advocacy service if you need more support. Further information about the work Healthwatch are doing to improve NHS services can be found on their website www.healthwatch.co.uk Happy patients also means happy staff members. Feedback from patients, which is staff member specific, helps us to reward our team when they demonstrate excellent levels of patient service. Recently, I was proud as punch when I was sent a thread of over one hundred replies to a ‘Shout out Calne’ post for one of my Admin team, Alex. A patient had complimented him on the site for his outstanding Reception skills and what followed was an outpouring of appreciative comments from patients similarly mirroring their thanks. As you can imagine, this was a great boost for Alex and the rest of the team and meant we were able to thoroughly embarrass him (in a nice way, of course) by bringing it up in our AGM and adding an acknowledgement

Health Matters
in our staff newsletter. I am lucky enough to work with a whole bunch of outstanding individuals like Alex, who are regularly publicly praised by patients for their outstanding level of care and service and it makes my job that much easier when it comes to staff appraisals and recognition. You will be pleased to know that it’s not just our patients who we badger to fill out those pesky feedback surveys. We also pester our staff members to do so a well – we want to find out what they really think about working for us. A recent survey showed that whilst 100% of staff members are proud to be employees of Beversbrook 35% of my colleagues wanted to have more protected time for training. Regular surveys such as these help us to cultivate a motivated team and of course, happy staff members mean happy patients. D’you see what I did there… oh I’m good….it’s no surprise that these surveys don’t include the question ‘how annoyingly chipper is your Practice Manager?’,I dread to think what the response would be! All I can hope for is that my dear friend finds this article less boring than the last ….on second thoughts, I don’t know if I want that feedback …..Oh dear! Pet Health
Pitter Patter Paws (Part 2) A guide to choosing your pet - what next?
ONG before you bring your pet home, on top of the research you undertook to ensure which pet was the right one for you and your family, you now have more homework and decisions to make. So, let this guide you to know the things that you need to do to make the transition from breeder/rescue centre to home. Hopefully this will give you the chance to get things in order so that it is as stress free as possible for you and your newcomer. Finding a good veterinary surgery has always been my number one priority as a pet owner. I have always wanted the peace of mind that should I need a vet in an emergency I can just pick up the phone and know that my pet will be in trusted hands. Now practices come in all shapes and sizes; from sole practitioners, multiple sites and hospitals. Some big, some small; some provide an adequate service and others a premium service. The choice is yours, but do your homework. Ask your friends who they use, look at websites and look on social media sites. Who grabs you? Read testimonials, yes there will be those that gripe, but overall what are people saying? How many reviews are there? Even just a handful speak volumes. How long are their consultation appointments; 5 minutes or 15 minutes? Is preventative care high on their agenda or do you visit when you have a problem? Every practice should have a brochure or literature on who they are and what they do. Though I also find the practice website to be a great source of information. Who works there? What level of staff do they have? Kennel maids or registered Veterinary Nurses? Are there any certificate holders amongst the vets, and how long have they been qualified? One last thing, is the surgery an accredited practice? Not all are and some owners feel this is very important. When you find the practice for you, register your pet. This is where you can now take your pet for his/her vaccinations, routine healthcare, advice and emergency treatment. Most practices offer a healthcare scheme which helps to spread the cost of vaccination, worming and flea treatments etc. and is very cost-effective to the owner. Vaccinations in pets is essential to protect them from potentially fatal illnesses, not to do so will put them at risk.

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
Most animals from rescue centres are now microchipped. It is now required by law in England and Wales that all dogs be chipped which should reduce the number of abandoned and abused pets. It is a simple, safe permanent method of identifying a pet and reuniting it with its owners should it get lost or stolen. It is highly recommended that for the same reasons cats are microchipped though they are not legally required to be done. Your vet will talk to you about neutering your pet as this prevents unwanted litters and provides health benefits to your pets. Do look up insurance as emergency care is expensive; after all we insure our cars not because we want to have an accident but because should one happen we are prepared. Your veterinary practice will be able to advise you. Finally, your puppy or kitten, adult cat or dog is ready to join you at home. Remember this is very stressful period, leaving mum and litter mates or the security of the kennel/cattery. Provide a crate for security and a calm welcoming environment for your fur baby. Give him/her time to adjust and rest away from the hubbub of family life and you will be amazed how quickly he/she will fit in. Is that the pitter patter of paws down the hallway?! Enjoy...

Blooming Baskets! by Rachael Leverton wet and you really don’t want your lovingly-planted orb of flowers to be deposited unceremoniously all over the floor!
The secret to growing a successful basket lays both in the way it’s planted but also in sensible aftercare. Plant the basket with bedding plants at the beginning of May but don’t plant them out for a couple of weeks, especially if you live in a more exposed area. Instead give them some shelter in a porch, or unheated greenhouse, or even under polythene at the side of the house. This allows the new plants to grow and toughen up a little before they are hung in their final position. Check that your bracket and chains for signs of rust and also check that the bracket is securely fixed to the wall. Hanging baskets are extremely heavy, especially when they are 62
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
Planting is easiest if you balance the basket on a large flowerpot or bucket. Fibrous liners help to retain water and look nicer than polythene. For extra moisture retention place a circle of polythene in the base of the basket before filling with soil.
The best planting medium is soilless multi-purpose compost, mixed with water-retaining granules. Place a layer of compost in the base of the basket and push the first layer of plants through. Trailing plants such as lobelia, bidens and ivy-leafed pelargoniums look lovely but you can be as creative as you like. Water the plants in their containers before planting them and squeeze the rootball firmly to make it small enough to push though the mesh from the outside. Plant quite densely and gradually build up layers of plants and soil. When it’s full to within 3 cm of the rim you can plant up the top with more upright, compact bushy plants like begonias, petunias and pelargoniums. Make sure your basket never dries out. It will be reliant on you for all water and nutrition. If you water it at least once a day and feed with dilute tomato fertilizer once a week I promise it will be blooming basket in the best possible way.

T’S hanging basket season! They can be a source of delight but also a source of stress. It’s easy for a hanging basket to fail badly. Too sparsely filled and they look bedraggled. Too little water and death is swift!

To water hanging baskets slowly and gently; place a handful of ice cubes in the centre of the basket and leave overnight. The cubes will thaw slowly whilst watering the plants. Perfect for warm summer days.

Faith Matters
Worth More than T
Meets the Eye
he one thing I love about this time of year is the sound of the birds getting ready to mate and nest during the spring. In fact as I write this article I have a blackbird singing in my garden. It lifts my spirit. However, I learnt something the other day while I was listening to Radio 4’s Tweet of the Day. The presenter explained that as the blackbird goes to roost at dusk on a winter’s night it announces its presence with a penetrating call. The call sounds very reassuring. However it’s an aggressive signal. A warning to other blackbirds to keep their distance. The birds are on alert because their territories are under threat. Continental blackbirds arrive to escape colder conditions elsewhere on the continent and Scandinavia. These immigrant birds are very unpopular with our resident blackbirds. Although they all eventually settle down to roost it is not before the chorus of aggressive calls from our resident birds. The nearest I have ever got to feel what that must be like to be ‘the other’ was 18 months ago when I was out on the streets of Reading involved in some secret filming for the Bible Society. In the morning I was dressed in my suit and dog collar asking passersby if I could borrow their mobile phone to ring a friend because I had left mine at home. Nearly everyone stopped to help. One or two were genuinely in a hurry and therefore couldn't stop. Those that did trusted me to take their phone to ring my imaginary friend. However, in the afternoon I was dressed up in old clothes and made up to look like a rough sleeper. Before I went out onto the street to carry out the same experiment as the morning I went to the bathroom and saw myself in a big mirror. In an instant I felt different about myself. It affected my self-esteem. I felt less of myself than I had before. As I went out onto the street I was nervous as I popped cans of lager in my pockets and had swilled my mouth out with whiskey. It was as though I had become invisible. In the same way as in the morning, I asked people if I could borrow their mobile phone to ring my friend that had not turned up. Most of the passersby didn’t even give me eye contact. They walked straight on by. Some were
6666
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
aggressive in their tone. “Leave me alone.”“What makes you think I have a phone on me?” they shouted. As I got little response I started offering a £1 coin in the hope that it might make a difference. However it didn’t. Though it was heartening to note that there were three people who stopped and offered help. I had never felt that way before. I had not been in such a situation before. I had never experienced what it is like to be ‘the other’. In that moment on the street, dressed as a rough sleeper, I got a small glimpse of what it must be like for those who live on our streets. Of course I would never really understand what it is like to be ignored day after day on the streets of out towns and cities, but it gave me a hint. There are many people who might feel like ‘the other’ in our society today. Perhaps it might be the Eastern European, Arab, Muslim, refugee, immigrant, rough sleeper or drug addict. Who is your ‘other’? Some years ago I was in Kolkata, India, where I was struck by the staggering contrast in wealth. There were those busy about their daily lives in their large chauffeur driven cars while tens of thousands of people live on the streets. Kolkata (Calcutta) is where Mother Teresa worked for many years caring for the sick and dying. She once said, “I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus, I must feed him. This is sick Jesus. This one has leprosy or gangrene; I must wash him and tend to him. I serve because I love Jesus.” What if we saw Jesus in everyone around us. How might that change the way we respond to ‘the other’ in our midst? If we look longer and deeper we might see something that we had never seen before. If we were to take the hand of the ‘the other’ and step into their world we might see them as God sees them. People of great worth, loved by God, and in whom we see the face of Jesus. There but for the grace of God go I. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.
Sun Flower Sunflower seeds are mainly sown from mid-April to the end of May and will flower in August. Planting sunflower seeds is a great activity for children, and looking to see how tall it might grow when selecting seed variety is part of the fun. Seeds can be sown directly into the ground where they are to flower, in a sunny position. Ensure the soil is weed-free and raked finely. Sunflower seeds need little maintenance, apart from some light watering and thinning out when the seedlings start to shoot up, but beware of hungry slugs and snails nibbling the new seedlings. As the sunflower begins to grow tall, the stem will need support – use a cane and tie loosely with string; you might need a step ladder if the weather is favourable!

A Good Read
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
......................................................................................... Authors draw inspiration from many places and it has been said that there are only so many stories to be told. Very often the skill of the storyteller is not in the story but in how it is told. Ancient mythology is a common source of inspiration and it is from the old Celtic myths of Ireland that this New Zealand author has turned for this historical fantasy fiction. Based loosely on the legend of the Children of Lir and elements of the German fairy-tale ‘The Six Swans’ Marillier manages to conjure up the rich and mystical landscape of ancient Ireland. Sorcha is the youngest of seven children and is raised largely by her six older brothers following the death of her mother during her birth. Her father remarries but his new wife is jealous and attacks the children. Sorcha escapes but her brothers are all turned into swans. Desperate to save them she learns that they will be freed if she weaves six shirts out of nettles without speaking a word to anyone. Retreating into the forest to complete her task she is cared for by the faerie-folk and visited twice a year by her brothers in human form. But if Sorcha thought that this seemingly impossible task was all that awaited her she was very much mistaken. This engrossing story will completely transport you to a magical landscape, evocative of Tolkien and ancient mythology.
Noughts and Crosses by Marjorie Blackman
......................................................................................... For today’s teenagers the mid-20th century really is history, and the attitudes of that time are alien to their lives. Young people today are exposed to such a range of cultures and people that segregation (South African apartheid or the Jewish ghettos) can seem unimaginable. Yet even a cursory glance at the 68
The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2017
news reveals that it is perilously real for some, and not just those in foreign lands. This is why Marjorie Blackman’s awardwinning teen novel is so unsettling. It tells of a divided society with two groups. The Crosses are the lucky ones: born into privilege and wealth. They run the country and have the best funded schools. But the Crosses couldn’t function without the other half – the noughts. The noughts are the bottom half of society. Their purpose is to work for Crosses and to keep the country ticking over. They are suppressed at every opportunity. This is segregation taken to the extreme: and it doesn’t work along the lines you might think it does. At the start of the story 13-year-old Sephy (a Cross) is secretly continuing a childhood friendship with Callum (a nought). This is a friendship that seems to be on a path to self-destruction as their feelings for each other grow. Fuelled by the growing uprising among noughts and the Liberation Militia the two teenagers are destined to be pulled apart. Blackman presents many echoes of the past: America in the 50s, South Africa under apartheid, and even the IRA of the 70s and 80s. Add to this some inspiration from Romeo and Juliet and you have a novel that will challenge the way you view the world.
