Even as we say hello to November, Christmas is a big topic here in the office! I expect many of you have already started thinking about the 'big day' too. Preparing for Christmas starts so early now, and again I am still surprised when the shops have had 'Christmas' stock in since September! If you are already writing your Christmas shopping list then don't miss out on our Christmas gift ideas on pages (p.36,37 & 51) There is something for everyone and the best thing is they are all from local shops, on the 'high street' - I appreciate, so many people shop online now and that's great, but we feel it's so important to support our local businesses - there are some lovely gifts, so please go and check them out.

Most of us love a good sing whether it’s secretly in the shower or in the car! But now we have proof that singing in a group is scientifically proven to make us happier than other activities!
Whilst dancing and cycling raised their happiness levels by 20%, singing raised them by
an extraordinary 40%; an exciting discovery that could help enormously with our approach to mental health.
Rock Choir is an award-winning choir that offers local contemporary group-singing to more than 400 communities country-wide. Since its creation in 2005 it has offered its members exciting and lifeaffirming experiences that have led to an increase in health and well-being. The popularity of Rock Choir has grown to a staggering 28,000.
Rock Choir, Britain’s largest contemporary amateur choir, was the focus of a brand-new experiment on this week’s BBC Music Day Special ‘Trust Me I’m a Doctor’ (Wednesday 26th September, 8pm, BBC2) where Dr Michael Mosley teamed up with experts at the University of Nottingham along with members of the local Derby Rock Choir to put singing, dancing and cycling to the test. His objective was to find out if any of these activities boosted our levels of Endocannabinoids – neurotransmitters thought to be the cause of the ‘natural high’. These chemicals have only recently been discovered and are similar in structure to the chemicals found in the Cannabis plant. As well as giving us a ‘buzz’ these chemicals are linked to improving mood and reducing anxiety and stress. Under the direction of physiologist Dr Saoirse O’Sullivan, the group of Rock Choir Members were tested in each activity over 4 days with interviews and blood taken to monitor their levels of Endocannabinoids. The end result was extremely exciting!
Local Rock Choir Members of the Trowbridge, Frome, Warminster/Westbury and Chippenham choirs joined over 10,000 of their fellow ‘Rockies’ recently by travelling to London’s Hyde Park to take part in the capital’s largest-ever singing Flash Mob led from the stage by Rock Choir Founder Caroline Redman Lusher and her team of Choir Leaders as part of the BBC Proms in the Park Event. Their singing and energy was infectious impacting a total audience of 40,000. Rock Choir Leader, Emma Webb, says “Rock Choir has made a huge impact on the well-being of its members. In fact it’s brought joy to all of us. I’ve seen first-hand how being part of Rock Choir has improved lives; some of our members have reported that they’ve come off anti-depressants, found new confidence in themselves and found pure happiness again...This new evidence reinforces everything my team and I have and continue to build together in Rock Choir. I’m very excited!” New members are always welcome and invited to enjoy a free taster session at their local rehearsal. Simply go to rockchoir.com or telephone

Marathon Runner Ian Blazes A Trail Fundraising For Wiltshire Air Ambulance LONDON Marathon runner Ian Norris has thanked everyone who supported him to raise more than £3,000 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
Ian, an on-call firefighter from Royal Wootton Bassett, was selected by Wiltshire Air Ambulance for the place it obtained in the London Marathon in April 2018. He had to raise a minimum of £2,500 but raised a fantastic £3,150. Ian, who ran the London Marathon in memory of Royal Wootton Basset GP Dr Jerry Marshall, went through the pain barrier to complete the race after sustaining an injury and contending with the hottest temperature on record. Ian was inspired to carry on fundraising for Wiltshire Air Ambulance by running the Swindon Half Marathon last month and raised £569.10. He and his wife, Michelle, visited Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s new airbase at Semington, near Melksham, to present the total of £3,719. Ian, 43, who works in vehicle quality at Honda in Swindon, said: “The amount raised is incredible. I can’t thank people enough for supporting me, they have been so generous. The money made from the quiz night I held for the London Marathon was massive, something I never expected. Honda have been very generous, donating towards the London Marathon and the Swindon Half.” Ian will continue to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance as he has signed up to run the Bath Half Marathon in March 2019. He added: “It’s been an absolute pleasure to be a part of the charity, raising vital funds and making people aware of the lifesaving work it does. The staff are amazing, they 8

are like a big family and that makes it more enjoyable to support and be a part of. I have felt proud to have pulled on the colours of Wiltshire Air Ambulance in London and Swindon and I can’t wait for the Bath Half!” Kenresa Stratford, Events Coordinator at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “Ian’s enthusiasm for both the London Marathon and the Swindon Half Marathon has been infectious. We are very grateful for the support he has given and the funds he has raised will help to keep our lifesaving service operational. We look forward to welcoming Ian back to Team WAA for the Bath Half Marathon on 17 March 2019. If you have been inspired by Ian, we have places available on our team for the Bath Half. If you are running the London Marathon in 2019 and would like to raise funds for Wiltshire Air Ambulance we’d be delighted to hear from you. NURSE with more than 18 years of experience, Anna decided to open her Wiltshire practice after being interested in aesthetics for many years before embarking on a period of intensive training. “This area of medicine has always interested me and now I’ve made the decision to set up in practice. I truly believe looking good isn’t about looking young, it’s about enhancing your appearance to restore your confidence. “I believe in safe practice and am very firm in my ethics around the procedures I offer. I will not consider working with anyone under the age of 18 and I also do a full consultation to see if a treatment is appropriate for a potential client. No treatment takes place on the same day.” Anna Medical Aesthetics, based in Buxton Road, Royal Wootton Bassett, offers an extensive range of non-surgical cosmetic treatments, including nonsurgical liquid face lift, wrinkle relaxer injections, lip augmentation and redefinition, dermal fillers and skin rejuvenation. “Clients who come to me often feel the natural aging process plays a key role in their appearance – they don’t want to look 20 years younger – they want some support in regaining their confidence with a refreshed and natural look. “I can help with a range of anti-aging procedures, creating a customised treatment plan, which may involve a combination of treatments such as wrinkle relaxation, chemical peels or fillers,” Anna said.
“My clients are the ones who don’t appear to have had anything done, but instead look youthful and refreshed. I would encourage anyone who is worried or concerned about their appearance to get in touch and see if I can help,” Anna said. Anna lives in Royal Wootton Bassett with her husband Igor and their three children. Born in Russia, Anna went to Israel at the age of 15 to complete her education before going on to take her first degree in nursing in Jerusalem. She moved to the UK in 2003 and has made Wiltshire her home, working in both hospitals and GP surgeries in disciplines including intensive care, primary care and aesthetics medicine. She speaks Russian, Hebrew and English. “I have had a varied career in nursing and have been very fortunate to have had jobs which I have loved. I’m currently completing my Master Degree in Advanced Practice with the University of West of England and am enjoying establishing my own business in the local community.” Anna Medical Aesthetics is the only Swindon area practice currently registered with Save Face, the national Government-accredited professional standards body for the aesthetics sector. This organisation holds members to rigorous standards of safety, ethics and clinical practice which includes onsite inspections of premises.
“Common concerns from my clients include: • facial wrinkles • a mouth which appears to be drooping at the corners • frown lines • crows’ feet • thinning lips • shadows or sagginess under the eyes, jawline or neck

100 YearsTime to Forgive
rmistice Day will be a poignant moment in the life of our nation this year. It feels entirely appropriate that Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday coincide because it is 100 years since the end of the First World War. To commemorate the end of the war the Bible Society have produced a short video in which at least three residents of Calne take part. The great news it that it will be shown in all Pearl and Dean Cinemas, 11th November throughout the country, and will hopefully be on the national news. https://www.biblesociety.org.uk/what-we-do/england-and-wales/world-war-1/ As I write, the press are full of talk of a photograph man however. OLD THOUGHTS GIVING NEW INSPIRATION
While it’s doubtful the members of Tetbury Camera Club had philosophy on their mind when travelling around the county on their recent summer location shoots, while sharing ideas and techniques they do Wiltshire like to come back with shots that look individual and different. Wildlife TrustThat often means looking at the places they are visiting from a new angle or with a launches fresh eye.

photography. The cameras now available are more versatile than ever and making creative use of the technology available makes photography today not just stimulating but also challenging. The picture shown here is a good example of that. It was taken by the club’s member, John Jennings on a recent visit to Cirencester. That was an evening when virtually all of the group found an interesting facet of the town they hadn’t spotted before. Only one though chose to capture the angle, height and shape of the tower which crowns the church of St John the Baptist, which can claim to be one of the country’s largest parish churches. To most photographers St John’s is a heavyweight example of gothic religious architecture which is now the focal point of the town centre. Its position and scale mean that these days it isn’t the easiest place to photograph or depict. Photographer John found a fresh way to demonstrate part of its scale by shooting for the sky and in doing so he has demonstrated just how apt Thoreau’s words can be if you want to photograph a challenging subject in the 21st century.
Great thoughts don’t need to be new to have modern relevance or give contemporary inspiration. One conceived about 150 years ago by an American philosopher, poet and writer called Henry David Thoreau proves this as effectively as any. It is also a good companion to this photograph from Tetbury Camera Club Thoreau, who lived from the early to mid-19th century penned the thought that ‘It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.’ If you think that’s a saying that sounds familiar it probably is, for today it seems to be used in a wide variety of different situations. They range from the inspirational phrases used on motivational posters which are often found in office corridors, canteens, reception areas and rest rooms, to decorative pictures, cushions and mirrors which are sold in lots of design and décor shops. 12
The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2018
It’s doubtful photography was what inspired Thoreau to come up with his words of wisdom back in the mid 1800’s, though that was when Henry Fox Talbot was working on his invention of photography at his home in Lacock Abbey. Hopefully though both men would be pleased to find that the words are still a very appropriate thought to bear in mind if you are ever out with your own camera and wondering how to produce an interesting souvenir of what you are seeing around you. Tetbury Camera Club is now in full swing again after its summer break, with regular weekly gettogethers, upstairs at The Priory Inn at 7.30 on a Tuesday evenings. The club is always happy to welcome new members. If you’d like to know more about its work there is lots of information about its forthcoming programme on its web site.

Is there a perfect leather jacket?
If there’s an international symbol for cool, it must be the leather jacket. It doesn’t matter how old you are either; Emma Watson and Helen Mirren both look fantastic in one. The right one will take you from weekend walk in the country to dinner at the swankiest hot-spot. But choosing one can be tricky, I’ve bought a few duds in my time. Here are my tips to help you find ‘The
One.’
Real or fake:
There are pros and cons to both. Many people feel as uncomfortable about leather as they do about fur. But faux leather has come a long way in recent years, and while it isn't as durable as the real thing it can look and feel almost as luxurious. As a bonus it's much cheaper. There’s no doubt that the real deal is expensive, but a wellchosen leather jacket will still look amazing in thirty years. That’s unlikely to be the case with its faux counterpart.
New or vintage:
A previously-loved jacket can be a great find. You could stumble on a true gem, like the butter-soft tan Armani jacket my
friend Debbie spotted in her local Oxfam shop for just £30. It had a few marks on it, and the local drycleaner was loathed to risk cleaning it, so she used a soft art eraser! It worked, and she now sports a jacket which would have set her back £500 new! Of course, the advantage of buying new is that you increase the odds of finding one in the exact cut, colour and size you want.
Fit:
Try, try, try. Although it’s technically the correct size you might find it looks better in a looser or snugger fit. Do you like a smooth soft finish, or do you prefer a coarser texture? Does it fit neatly at your hips and zip up over your boobs!

Fashion vs Function: What do you expect
from your jacket? If you want to ride your Harley in all weather, you and I will have very different expectations! For this article I assume you want to buy one leather jacket which you can wear in the maximum number of settings, so go for a midweight jacket that you can layer thin jumpers under and scarves over in winter, or wear open over a light dress on a cool summer evening. Detailing is important but keep it understated and avoid anything too 'on trend' so that your investment item doesn't date.
Colour: If you are going to buy only one leather jacket make it black. A French friend told me that the only colour leather jacket a French woman will contemplate is black. 'But I look ghastly in black,' I countered. 'Then buy a colour that makes you look fabulous,' she said with a Gallic shrug, 'A French woman will break any rule which means she doesn't look fabulous.' So, with her blessing I tried on every colour and found that the most useful shade for anyone who can't wear black is oxblood, or deep burgundy, or as my French friend would say, 'Cognac'. It goes with every other colour and is more flattering to a British complexion. But if navy, grey or dark brown does it for you then go with that. This is your investment and I won't tell anyone.

Why wear a It’s over a century since more than nine million soldiers were killed during the First World War. The last of the veterans from that era are dead and many young people know little about the causes and devastating aftermath of the conflict. Many refuse to wear a poppy because they think it glorifies war. Perhaps it’s more important than ever that we discuss the poppy’s place in history. Much of the worst fighting in World War 1 took place in Flanders, the western part of Belgium. The area suffered terribly, with homes, farms, roads and trees all completely destroyed. The land became a bleak, muddy graveyard for the thousands of soldiers who fell there. One plant, however, thrived in the disturbed soil and that was the poppy. Year after year, as the warm weather arrived, the poppies bloomed and turned the grim bare ground into a sea of red. At that time, fighting in Flanders was a young Lieutenant, Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician. In May 1915, his close friend and fellow soldier was killed in action. Seeing the poppies growing alongside his grave moved McCrae to write the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, which was later published in Punch magazine. The idea to use the poppy as a symbol of remembrance for dead soldiers came from an American professor and YWCA worker, Moina Michael, in 1918. She wrote a poem in reply to McCrae’s called ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’ and started to sell silk poppies.
The idea was adopted by the American Legion in 1920 and she became known as ‘The Poppy Lady’. In 1921, Anna E Guerin started making artificial poppies in France and gained the support of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, founder of the Royal British Legion. The first poppy appeal was held on Armistice Day 1921. It was hugely popular and, despite a recommended selling price of threepence per poppy, single petals sold for £5. In all, the appeal raised £106,000 – that’s nearly £30 million in today’s terms! In recent years some people have chosen to wear a white poppy, either instead of or alongside a traditional red one. White poppies symbolise pacifism and also remember the civilians killed in conflicts past and present, as well as the soldiers. The idea is not a modern one as I originally assumed; it was initially put forward in 1926 by the No More War Movement, and the first white poppies were sold by the Cooperative Women’s Guild in 1933. They are now distributed by the Peace Pledge Union, a British pacifist nongovernmental organisation that works for a world without war. However you choose to wear your poppy this year I hope you now have a greater understanding of the interesting and complex story behind this iconic flower.

INDEPENDENT FAMILY FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND MEMORIAL CRAFTSMEN
Each person is different and so each funeral should be too Bereavement can be a tremendous shock and organising a funeral may seem daunting. As an independent family business we feel that everyone should have a funeral that reflects and respects individuality. Whether you call in to see us or pick up the telephone, you can be reassured that a family member will answer any queries or assist you. Pre-Planning a Funeral All of the family team are able to advise you on any aspects of a funeral, and instead of opting for the traditional funeral; you may prefer to have a funeral with a difference, for example by choosing a colourful coffin or an alternative hearse. If pre-purchasing a funeral you can be reassured that: • Each plan is bespoke • Written at today’s prices • Relieves the burden for both you and your family • Payments can be made monthly
Memorials As Members of British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons, (BRAMM) our fixers are licensed to fix headstones and memorials in cemeteries and churchyards across the county. We will help you to choose or design the most suitable headstone, memorial or gravestone or renovate an existing headstone if required. Our memorials are prepared and supplied from our own workshop and we are experienced at cleaning and renovating existing headstones.
Simply writing down your likes and dis-likes or discussing your wishes with friends and family helps to ensure you have the funeral you approve of.
Memorials are not always associated with a grave space and we have many options available for keepsakes.

Adapted by Ian McEwan from his bestselling novel, the drama centers on Florence (Saoirse Ronan) and Edward (Billy Howle), a young couple of drastically different backgrounds in the summer of 1962. She is a talented and ambitious classical musician from a well-to-do family and he is a clever young man from humbler origins. Following the pair through their idyllic courtship, the film explores sex and the societal pressure that can accompany physical intimacy, leading to an awkward and fateful wedding night.
The work is very affordable and will include paintings and objects large and small at very affordable prices. Home made teas! Free entry, walkers and their dogs welcome.. Marlborough Artists are a group of artists from an area covering Royal Wootton Bassett to Pewsey to Hungerford, with many based in and around Royal Wootton Bassett.

What does the ‘Personal Tax Allowance’ mean? Every person who is resident in the UK is given a personal allowance each tax year. It operates as follows: The personal allowance is the amount of income you can receive before paying tax – and it increases each tax year. For the 2018/19 tax year, it is £11,850. So, if you earn £20,000 in 2018/19, you will be subject to income tax on £8,150 of your earnings. The personal allowance is reduced when your income exceeds £100,000 in a tax year (by £1 for every £2 your income exceeds £100,000) – so that when your income reaches £123,700 (in 2018/19), you will no longer receive a personal allowance. CASTLE Five miles northwest of Chippenham, on the B4039 which is the link road from Chippenham to Chipping Sodbury, lies the beautiful village of Castle Combe. Divided into two parts, one is the narrow valley of By Brook, the other half is on higher ground to the east and is known as Upper Castle Combe. It has a small population of around 400, and is famous for its racing circuit where both car and bike racing take part. The public can enjoy the experience under expert tuition, although it would be wise to contact the circuit first to see when these experience days take place. The By Brook Stream runs through the village and is crossed by a picturesque stone bridge, leading from one row of beautiful stone houses and cottages on one side to another of equal beauty, many with walls covered in climbing plants and blooms.

As the roads are too narrow for buses, there are no groups of tourists standing sround, although visitors do come to the village to enjoy the peace and historical feel of an authentic and beautiful old English village unspoiled by time and modernity. You will not find any cars parked in the high street, and there is not a television aerial nor a telegraph pole to be seen, ( which makes the village much sought after for the filming of silver screen and television series.) Popular productions filmed here include Dr.Dolittle, The Wolfman, Stardust, and scenes from The Warhorse, and the ever popular Poirot. There are lots of places to explore, the Butter Cross and the Knight's Tomb in the old Norman Church to name just two, and sightseeing done for the day, there are plenty
of comfy places to lay your head for the night, as well as get a meal or a drink in the friendly hotels / pubs, or if it’s just a treat you fancy, why not visit The Old Rectory Tea Rooms. Suprisingly, the village also boasts a spa, The Lucknam Spa less than 3 miles away. Castle Combe truly is a hidden jewel in Wiltshires crown, and one not to be missed if you are planning a touring holiday or even just a day away. by Jo Deacon

I'm a keen amateur photographer but I always failed at firework photography until last year when I decided to get serious, so I have put together this short guide.
Kit:
camera, torch, tripod, charged battery (and spare), decent memory card, remote shutter release.
Location: Get to any display early, before
the crowds to choose the right spot. You want somewhere which avoids obstacles such as buildings or trees, street lights, car lights, and bright signs.
Wind:
Stand upwind of the fireworks (wind blowing away from you). If you're downwind smoke will probably block most of your shots!
Settings: I've finally mastered this! If you
have a camera you can set to manual: Turn the flash off; Turn noise reduction on; Set ISO 100; Set Aperture to F11; Focus for landscape (slightly less than infinity - some cameras have a landscape setting); shutter speed - you need to experiment to find your preference - try everything from 1-15 seconds (NB. this is why you need the tripod and shutter-release cable, to avoid blurry photos) If you only have an automatic (point-and-shoot) camera: Look for a firework setting. If you don't have one, try the landscape setting and experiment. I found clicking as soon as I heard the 'whoosh' of the firework being launched meant I caught the firework more often than not.
Experiment:
Try different settings, different shutter speeds and focal lengths. Use the torch to check and adjust settings. Enjoy the process and don't forget to share your photos! 32

Homemade Christmas crackers that will give your Christmas dinner table a personal touch.
DIY
* Toilet-roll tubes * Decorative paper * Sticky tape & ribbon * Cracker snaps (craft shops/online) * Scissors * Decorative string or ribbon * Decorative gems, stars etc (whatever you have to hand) * Jokes, hat & gift to for inside Measure lengths of decorative paper and cut out enough for the amount of crackers you are making. Make sure you give enough width in the paper so it goes around the card tubes more than once. Get some of your favourite jokes, print them out and cut them into strips that will fit easily into each cracker. Add a fold back to the edge of your paper, so the edges look neat. Add a cracker snap into each cardboard roll and seal inside in the middle with a little tape. Ensure the snap is poking out slightly at each end. Seal the decorative paper together with tape or decorative stickers so it is secure around the cardboard tube, sealing everything inside. Then tie one end with ribbon. Fill each cracker with your jokes, gifts and hats etc Then tie the final open end of the cracker with your decorative ribbon, sealing the cracker.

1 cup raisins, 1 cup sultanas 1 cup self-raising flour 1 cup (115g/4oz) butter 1 cup fresh brown breadcrumbs (from approx 4 thick slices of bread) 1 cup light muscovado sugar 1 cup mixed chopped nuts 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1 tsp mixed spice 1 cup milk, 1 large egg Butter for greasing 1.5 litre pudding bowl Put the fruit, flour, butter, breadcrumbs and nuts into a mixing bowl along with the spices. Mix the milk and egg together and slowly stir into the mix. Combine and pour the whole mixture into a greased pudding bowl. Cover the mixture with a layer of foil, ensuring there is enough room to allow the pudding to rise.
Tie the foil securely around the bowl with string and place in a steamer or alternatively a large pan containing enough water to reach halfway up the sides of your pudding bowl. Cover with a lid and steam for 2 and 1â „2 hours. Check the water level whilst cooking and top up if necessary. If preparing this pudding ahead of Christmas then remove the foil, let it cool, then wrap in cling film and a layer of tin foil. When serving, gently unwrap and turn upside down onto a deep plate. Serve with brandy butter, cream or sauce of your choice and decorate with mixed nuts.

ORDMANN fir trees come in lots of sizes. They are bushy and symmetrical and are a lovely colour. They last well too, even in homes where people like the central heating set to toasty levels. The Fraser Fir has an intense festive aroma that lasts well. It’s a pretty shape and slimmer than the Nordmann so is good if you don’t have a lot of floor space. It retains its needles well. The Serbian Spruce has a slender trunk with short, gracefully drooping branches and bright green needles. They are often sold as smaller pot-grown specimens here so they can be good for a table-top tree, and can be planted out once Christmas is over. The Rocky Mountain Fir is quite a narrow tree with a striking blue colouring to the foliage. It’s also good for needle retention. Finally the Norway Spruce, is what we think of (somewhat ironically) as a traditional British Christmas tree. It has a lovely shape but is notorious for dropping its needles. Try buying a potted tree rather than a cut one, as these hold their needles better. But actually, it’s only for a couple of weeks so a few dropped needles aren’t such a terrible price to pay for a truly lovely tree.

Runners can now sign up for the event, held at Lydiard Park, with 75% of the proceeds this year going to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and the remaining 25% being distributed to small local Swindon charities. The Santa Fun Run is a fun event open to all abilities with a Santa suit included as part of the £15 entry price. There will also be a Zumba warm-up session prior to the start and refreshments will be before, during and after the event for runners and supporters. Chris Sims, President said “Every year it is fantastic to see so many individuals, groups, the young, the not so young and even some of the four-legged variety set off around the course. Seeing so many Santa’s is quite a sight and of course all in support of such magnificent local causes.” Kenresa Stratford, Events Coordinator at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We’re so grateful to the Swindon Phoenix Rotary Club for choosing Wiltshire Air Ambulance to once again benefit from this year’s Santa Fun Run. We will be at the event with our mascot, Wilber, and our Air Ambulance elves will also be participating by walking the 5k route...” To enter, an adult is £15 including a Santa suit. C The perfect Christmas turkey
www.lydiardturkeys.co.uk 01793 881215
HRIS AND LINDSAY RUMMING run Lydiard Turkeys from the family farm near Royal Wootton Bassett. Their aim is to produce the best tasting turkeys in the highest possible welfare conditions. This is done by only rearing a small number of birds which means they have the time to focus all their attention on the details that make an exceptional turkey.
The bronze turkeys are grown to twice the age of fast growing strains, and are given double the paddock space of most free range turkeys. This combined with on farm traditional dry plucking and temperature controlled game hanging means the turkeys will be succulent and full of flavour. They supply traditional whole birds and crowns in a range of weights to suit your needs. They come beautifully packaged and ready to pop in the oven and the cooking instructions will help to produce the perfect Christmas turkey.

‘On the first day of Christmas... ...my true love gave to me, a wonderful day at this year’s Calne Christmas Festival of Lights!
Held on Saturday December 1st from 12 noon to 6pm there will be plenty for all the family to enjoy, so make sure you wrap up warm and make the most of the festivities! With plenty to see and do, why not come along and watch the stunning red and gold stilt walking Christmas Belles, chuckle with the runaway Christmas tree fairy as she campaigns to have Christmas twice a year, to save her from her fate of being shut away for 50 weeks a year. Browse the throng of local traders throughout the town centre, as well as in the Town Hall and the New Market Place, as ‘Calne Springs’ join us with their market, there’s plenty to see and sample including Christmas gifts, sweet treats & even a Christmas tipple…or two. Let the little ones send their requests to Father Christmas as he joins us in his Grotto, located in the Council Chamber of the Town

hall from November 28th to December 1st (times tbc).
Similar to that of our ever popular ‘Spring Sing’ we will also be hosting a ‘Christmas Sing’ with a variety of local choirs in the large hall of the town hall from 1pm, bring the spirit of Christmas to life through their heavenly vocals and Christmas cheer. The day will draw to an end with the annual lantern parade, following the theme of the Twelve Days of Christmas, this will be depicted with stunning silhouette lanterns as they dance through the town during the parade (leaving Bremhill view at 4:30pm) lead by Father Christmas himself. Finally, stand in awe, as you await for the town to be illuminated with its beautiful dazzling Christmas lights followed by a spectacular firework display- this year we will not only be joined by the winner of the ‘Guy’ competition, but also a very special guest too, who will be switching on the lights just for you! You’ll not want to miss it.’

Top tips for perfect gift wrapping... Wrapping Paper: think carefully about your colour scheme
Get creative with accessories: adds a nice touch and makes it a little different.
Vary your wrapping paper: a mixture of plain & patterned with contrasting colours.
Get organised: make sure you have what you need, plenty of tape & sharp scissors!
Always measure your wrapping paper first. Keep paper offcuts - they will come in handy as belly bands/sashes around your gifts.
Give yourself plenty of time: there's no need to rush. Make wrapping fun! Get yourself settled, put on some music. It doesn't need to be boring. Mix your wrapping up: don't wrap everything in the same way. Change it up, use different ribbons on different wrapping papers. This will keep everything looking different but tie the colour theme together. Get off the carpet: make sure gifts are wrapped on a hard surface, avoids wrinkles in the paper and saves time. Always cut the ribbon at a 45 degree angle: prevents fraying. The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2018

Making your Christmas cake in advance not only saves time, but makes it even more delicious come Christmas time!
58
The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2018
Brush warm apricot jam all over your cake. Roll out the your marzipan into a circle or square large enough to cover the cake Using the rolling pin, lift the marzipan and lay it over the cake. Ease it down the sidestrying not to get any air pockets. Trim excess marzipan off and rub the cake lightly with icing sugar hands to get a smooth finish. Store at room temperature for 1 to 2 days before decorating.
Generously line a round or square cake tin with greaseproof paper ensuring some sticks out of the top of the tin. Add the mixed dried fruit and cherries into a large mixing bowl with the brandy, juice and zest of the orange and lemon. Cover with clingfilm and leave for 24 hours or longer. Stir occasionally. Sift the flour and mixed spice together. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time. Add to the flour mix a spoonful at a time and mix together.
Lightly knead the icing and roll to 5mm thick as a circle or square. Using the rolling pin, lift the icing and lay it over the cake pushing it down so there are no air pockets. Gently easeout any folds or pleats. Trim off the excess icing with a sharp knife. Lightly dust with icing sugar then polishwith clean hands over the icing to smooth the surface. Use the icing trimmings to make Christmas shapes to decorate your cake. Leave the icing to set for a few days. Slice up amongst your family and enjoy a great Christmas treat!
Fold in the ground almonds and the fruit mixture. Spoon the whole mixture into your tin. Preheat the oven to 150°C (130°C fan, 300°F, gas mark 2). Wrap the extra paper around the cake. Bake for 45 minutes reducing in temperature to 140°C (120°C fan, 275°F, gas mark 1) and bake for a further 3 hours or until a skewer in the centre comes out clean. Cover the top loosely with foil to ensure your cake doesn't burn on top. Remove from the oven and cool completely. When cool, wrap the cake in foil and store carefully. Feed the cake by piercing a few times with a skewer. Drizzle over 2 tbsp brandy, re-wrap and store. Repeat a few times. The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2018

ENTREPRENEUR JOHN WILLIAMS RAISES MORE THAN £1,500 IN HIS FATHER’S MEMORY John Williams, co-founders of one of Wiltshire’s most successful heating and plumbing companies, has raised more than £1,500 for the British Heart Foundation. John took part in his first half marathon event last month in memory of Steve Williams, well known and loved in Chippenham, who passed away suddenly in December 2017 due to heart failure at the age of 75. In his memory, John trained to run the town’s half marathon in September – his first ever - to raise £500 for the charity which works tirelessly to improve outcomes for those with heart problems. John smashed his target by raising £1,504. John said: “I’m so grateful to everyone who supported me and kept me going on the day. I was pleased I ran my first half marathon in just over two hours and 11 minutes and tripled my fund-raising target. Thank you.” The fitness bug has bitten John who has since gone on to run another half marathon and a 10K. “Doing this event in memory of my dad has spurred me on to take my fitness seriously and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed running at these events which makes the training worthwhile,” John said. The Chippenham Half Marathon celebrated its tenth anniversary this year and John’s company, John Williams Heating Services, was one of the main sponsors as it has been for the last three years. Next year’s race will take place on Sunday September 8. * John Williams Heating Services is based on the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate in Chippenham.

Stay Safe Online Use the latest OS [Operating System] The most recent OS is generally the safest. Microsoft’s Windows 10 is their most up-to-date OS, and anything earlier should really be upgraded. Don’t forget that free software updates are issued all the time. Take advantage of these and update regularly.
Use an up-to-date router. Make sure you rename your network to make it more difficult to find, create a unique password and always turn on the encryption.
Backup! Backup! Backup!
Just in case. Back all your data up regularly, and from time to time check the backups.
Install security software The main threats to your online security are hackers, viruses and spyware, (this last one is a programme that may be used to log your credit card details). Ideally you should have a firewall, plus antivirus and anti-spyware software as an absolute minimum. You really need all three, because individually they won’t protect you against every attack. Be sure to update them regularly.
Ditch the SPAM! As far as possible don’t open anything you think is SPAM. Use ‘disposable’ email addresses for registrations on sites with which you’re unfamiliar and use SPAM filter software.
Wi-Fi Wisdom Wireless networks can offer an easy way for people to eavesdrop on your PC. Because they use radio waves, anyone within range can pick up the signal, making them a target for hackers who could be after your financial details, as well as freeloading unauthorised users who might piggyback your signal to access your broadband connection.

CELEBRITY INTERVIEW “The time of the show is crucial,” says BBC Radio 2 presenter and Liverpudlian Liza Tarbuck, who was born in the city in 1964. “What are people doing while they’re listening and what would I want to listen to in their position? I like to assemble the tracks so one somehow fits with the next and works as a continuous hour as if there were no talking in between. “It’s the norm to play between eight and ten tracks in any hour, and I try and get twelve away, but plan for fifteen.” She has had her own show on BBC Radio 2 since 2012 when she started hosting the Saturday evening slot but she has been a voice of the station since 2007. Prior to that she was a presenter on Channel 4’s Big Breakfast. She is the daughter of legendary comedian Jimmy Tarbuck.
In 2001, she took the title role in Linda Green, which ran for two series, ending in 2002. She has guest starred on the Ricky Gervais comedy Extras, and has appeared in The Inspector Lynley Mysteries as DI Fiona Knight. In 2004, Liza appeared in Series 6 of the long-running BBC One comedy French & Saunders, as a fictionalised version of herself, where she had the role of Producer for ‘Saunders & French Productions’. In 2005, Liza appeared as Mrs Jellyby in the BBC One serial Bleak House and in 2006 she appeared in episode six of the sitcom Saxondale.
Tarbuck
“I consider it an honour to have my own show on BBC radio,”
playing a character called Pamela opposite Emma Wray. Liza stayed with Watching for its entire seven-year run. She also appeared as Angie in the 1988 Falklands War drama Tumbledown, which starred Colin Firth, Paul Rhys and David Calder.
“If the music is good the rest of the show takes care of itself. An opening song should change your palate from the previous show and hint at what’s to come. If I get the opening track right, the rest just flows.
In 2007 she lent her voice to the animated Doctor Who adventure The Infinite Quest. That year she also starred in the ITV1 comedy drama Bonkers. In 2009 Liza starred as Staff Nurse Tina in her first role in a feature film, in The Be All and End All, and in 2016 she played the part of Anne Hathaway in the BBC Two comedy series Upstart Crow. “Liza has worked quite well during the terms,” reads Liza’s school report, when she was aged 9yrs 5mths. “She could, however, do better if she were not so easily distracted.” In her book ‘I An Distracted By Everything – an Annual for Grown Ups’ which Liza intends to distract the reader from what they are thinking, one of her observations is about the words ‘I can’t’. “I think ‘I can’t’ is just another way of saying ‘help me’ or ‘I’m scared’,” she says. Liza has an older sister, Cheryl and a younger brother, James. I An Distracted By Everything by Liza Tarbuck is published by Penguin. £16.99

“I’m allowed (my rule) to play some of my favourite tunes a few times a year, listening to them on the BBC equipment can take my breath away. It’s part of the reason I do the show. She adds: “I’m mindful of the shows that follow mine and I can lay a foundation for them to wet the listeners’ whistle… similarly I like to end on a high – it’s helpful for the following show.” Her first big break came in 1987 when she landed a starring role in the new Granada Television comedy series Watching,

Swindon and Cricklade Railway at Blunsdon celebrate their 40th anniversary this year and to help celebrate they have the 5619, ex-Great Western tank engine, courtesy of the Telford Horsehay Steam Trust. This engine worked alongside the resident steam engines based at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway. The Swindon and Cricklade Railway took a look back at some of the dates in history where major achievements helped them mark their history.
68
The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2018
2018
1978 – The Swindon and Cricklade Railway took possession of a site with no railway remaining. The Swindon and Cricklade Railway was one of the very first Heritage Railways to start with no legacy of track or buildings. 1980 – Tracklaying begins on a small scale.
1983 – First passenger rides available in a Wickham trolley.
1984 – First steam-hauled passenger
rides out-and-back from Blunsdon platform.
2000 – Regular passenger services between Blunsdon and Hayes Knoll. 2003 – Celebration steam train crosses the new River Ray bridge on a short section of track towards Swindon. 2008 – Northern extension to South Meadow Lane (in Cricklade direction opened – doubles the length of the existing railway. 2015 – Taw Valley Halt, adjacent to
Mouldon Hill Coutry park in Swindon, opened on the Swindon extension.
2018 – The “Return to Cricklade”
appeal is launched, this appeal marked the commencement of major track bed clearance from South Meadow Lane as far as Farfield Lane.
Following a generous donation of redundant railway infrastructure from the former Didcot A Power Station the reality of achieving their ambition bears fruit. Work is currently taking place to raise funds to purchase the base ballast, this will allow track to be relaid as far as Farfield Lane Bridge. The next project then will be replacing the missing Farfield Lane Bridge, this will allow The Swindon and Cricklade Railway to build a new Halt for passenger use whilst they continue the trackbed clearance in readiness for the final assault to rejoin Swindon to Cricklade again. The Swindon and Cricklade Railway are always looking for volunteers to join their enthuastic and team. Membership is always available.
Help them continue “Keeping Swindon’s Railway Heritage alive…”

TRAVEL GUIDE

Spain Valencia Region
OCATED in eastern Spain, in the centre of the Region of Valencia and on the shores of the Mediterranean. The capital is the city of Valencia, which is also the region capital. Its rich artistic heritage includes particularly the Silk Exchange, with the World Heritage designation, and the ground-breaking City of Arts and Sciences. The city Is also the scene of the spectacular Fallas midsummer bonfire festival, declared a Festivity of International Tourist Interest. This same distinction has been awarded to another of the festivities in the province, the Tomatina tomato battle in Bunol. Also recommended are a visit to the attractions of the towns of Cullera, Gandia, Requensa, Sagunto and Xativa. Its natural attractions include over 100 kilometres of coastline, with beaches with fine golden sand. It has two reserves and numerous spaces for enjoying sports in the open air, the districts of Los Serranos and El Rincon de Ademuz are of particular interest. The local gastronomy is best known for rice dishes such as paella, and other typical products are horchata (tiger nut milk) and water from Valencia.
Moraira is one of the towns that make up Teulada-Moraira, 80-kilometres from Alicante. It is a traditional fishing harbour, at the centre of 8 kilometres of coastline, with fine white sand beaches such as Portet or L’Ampolla, and small coves like Andrago or Cap Blanc. The average year round temperature here is 18°C. Denia is a delightful cosmopolitan town with 20 kilometres of sandy beaches and rocky coves making it an ideal place for family beach holidays. The city has well preserved ancient walls and bastions. Calpe has a wonderful mixture of old Valencian culture and modern tourist facilities. It is a great base from which to explore the local area or enjoy the many local beaches. Xabia known to others as Javea - this is a gem of a town situated on the Northern Costa Blanca, Is just more than an hour’s drive from two different international airports in Alicante and Valencia. The temperature is mild, averaging 26°C in August to 12°C in January. Neither a hotspot nor offthe-beaten track, Javea is at the north end of a 200-kilometre resort strip of coastal towns and cities, collectively known as the Costa Blanca.

The Handmaid's Tale
by Margaret Atwood
This is another revisited classic, due to a very successful TV adaptation. Atwood wrote this feminist dystopian novel back in 1985.
Atwood presents a stunning, stark creation of the world within Gilead, where women are there for one purpose; to breed. The story of one woman’s journey and the harsh reality of it gives you a sense of immense frustration. Offred is a woman with the will to survive. The story represents a future world, a deeply religious totalitarian state with despotic, chauvinist leaders and sterile marriages. TV land has managed to spin another season out of this story. However, read the book and you’ll understand why I prefer it up to the bitter end. Published by Vintage ISBN 0099740915

My not so Perfect Life
by Sophie Kinsella
This is a lovely light read from Kinsella, the number one best-selling author of half a dozen other gems. Katie has moved from Somerset and reinvented herself in London. Now her Instagram account shows a perfect existence in modern London, but the reality is far less fun. Her indomitable boss Demeter has made her work life miserable and she shares a cheap flat

with strange flatmates and a hellish commute to work. Life takes a turn and Katie seizes fresh opportunities to discover what she really wants, and needs, in her life. Kinsella is skilful at telling stories of our strange contemporary lives with humour, several scenarios make you laugh out loud. Not a heavy read but one that has great believable characters, situational humour and a decent storyline. Published by Black Swan ISBN 1784160423

Rob the Roman gets eaten by a Lion (nearly)
by Scoular Anderson Ever wondered what it was like to live in Ancient Rome? This fantastic short book aimed at young readers introduces them to Rob – short for Robur – who lives in Rome with his parents and sister. Rob doesn’t want to follow in the footsteps of his father who inspects drains, but dreams of being a famous gladiator!
Using a mixture of text and cartoon strips, Rob shows the reader what his life is like, from trips to the Baths, to a trip to the country to visit his Grandpa on his farm. But the highlight is when his cousin, Illustrious returns from the army and manages to get tickets to see the gladiators fighting in the amphitheater. Rob is very excited until a turn of events sees him a bit TOO close to the action! This is a great little read, especially for children who are either interested in history, or who might need a little bit of help with their history homework!

THE TOWN CRIER MEETS….
y l l Wa BEALL Wally Beall has always loved the sea. Brought up in Leicester and living most of his married life with wife Jean in Wiltshire – his passion seems strange. He’s lived in landlocked places.
So where has this love of the sea come from? Jean, who was brought up on an isolated farm in Scotland, believes it was the pull of the sea based upon annual holidays when they were growing up in the 1920s and 30s. “I think his love of the sea came from those seaside visits which you looked forward to so much and was so different from living in an urban area,” Jean said. Wally agrees. Wally’s love of the sea was so great he even built his own yacht in his Wiltshire garden – it became a landmark in Atworth, near Melksham as it took four years to build. Yet the boat is still on the water today with a new proud owner. Yet I wasn’t with Wally to discuss about his lifelong love of the sea. Yet our talk did involve the sea. Wally was one of thousands who took part in Operation Overlord and today he’s one of 82

only five D Day veterans left in our county. At the age of 94, he’s a man who is quietly proud of his role in the biggest sea landing in history which took place on June 6 1944. Next year (2019) he’ll be taken in one of the famous London black cabs back to Normandy to commemorate 75 years since that day when he – alongside his comrades – took American soldiers and tanks to Omaha beach. It was the year before that Wally had finally been given the green light by his employer to join the Royal Navy.
He was in a reserved occupation working for a lens polisher for military instruments (components for Spitfires) and had been nagging his boss for permission to join up. He’d been a member of the Home Guard since the age of 16.
“I kept seeing my mates coming back in their uniforms and I’d got friends and family who were serving in the forces and something about it got to me. I wanted to be part of it, it was something I had to do. I’ve always loved the sea.” In May that year, he got his wish and began training. He was finally drafted to LCT (Tank Landing Craft) 836 as a Wireman, looking after electrics and various other vital tasks. In early June, Wally and his mates sensed something was up, there were whispers among the dockers and then his LCT was put on 48 hour standby. “There was no communication in those days,” Wally said. “No television no radio yet we knew something was up. Something was coming. Then on June 4, American soldiers arrived with nine Sherman tanks and we were told we were to be part of Operation Overlord – the greatest sea-landing ever attempted – and our job was to go in at, or before, H hour (landing hour) to blow up obstacles on a beach in Normandy.” Diversion tactics were in place to make the enemy think a landing would come via Calais. Wally set off with the ‘Yanks’ as he called them, most were really sick, the weather was bad yet the operation was still on. “We didn’t realise how big the operation was going to be. You couldn’t see it from the boat deck. However as we were heading out of Southampton and we were on the bridge, you could see we were part of a vast fleet. You knew then. You knew you were part of something momentous. “I was of an age where you were a bit gungho. Yet as we were on our way, getting closer and closer I did say a few words of prayer
along the lines of ‘if I get through this, I’ll be a really good man in the future’.” Wally’s description of the sights and sounds of D Day from someone who lived through it brings the whole experience alive. “You could hear the shells whizzing and the sizzling of the big ones going by. The crew waded off and we’d towed an infantry landing craft the whole way too. We’d been blown by the weather off our original course toward Utah Beach and landed at Omaha. In that we were lucky, we lost 197 men that day. Thousands were lost on the other beaches and I was so glad I was not a soldier.” Wally and his crew made 11 journeys back and forth during Operation Overlord – first to Omaha, then to Cherbourg and finally L’Havre. He worked mostly with American soldiers which meant he got access to their famous K rations with far more ‘treats’ than British service men enjoyed. On his return he met Jean a ‘vittling clerk’ in the WRENs, they married, moved to Wiltshire and life settled down. Like many D Day veterans, Wally didn’t talk much about the war and the role he played within it. However in 1994, he went back and became part of that important group of people who ensure we remember. For Wally, this latter unexpected journey has been amazing. “I’ve had some wonderful experiences while remembering those who didn’t make it. We did what we had to do and life ensures that over time you look back and really see that you did have an impact, it did matter,” he said. Sporting his medals, which include the Legion d’Honneur, Wally is treated in France as a hero – a true celebrity and rightly so. An ordinary young man in an extraordinary situation alongside thousands of others, creating a deep connection which survives today among veterans. It’s the difference between those of us who learn about it and those who know what it felt like…. The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2018

Jobs for November!
• Regularly check your stored produce of pears, apples etc and remove any that are rotting. This includes potatoes for blight - remove any that are soft or discoloured to prevent the fungal disease spreading to your healthy potatoes. • Protect exotic plants from frost by putting a handful of straw in the crown of tree ferns, around the roots of trees and use hessian or bubble wrap around pots. • Keep an eye out for weeds which will still try to grow even with winter approaching. • Wash any slippery surfaces with water and a few drops of specialist cleaner. Scrub until all algae, moss etc has been removed.
Have a go! • Plant a magnolia tree ready for a beautiful spring display. • This is best done in moist, rich and slightly acidic soil. Use a good quality compost to get it off to a good start.

Long before the introduction of central heating and other luxuries of the 21st century, people required greater faith that they would safely survive the harsh upcoming winter. One such symbolic display of this hope was the beautiful Christmas wreath. Now creeping back in fashion and available in a number of guises, they can be found hanging on doorways, both inside and out, as a centrepiece on a table, and even hung on walls as decorations. Although we may have lost the traditional reasoning behind displaying such garlands, I’m on a mission to bring them back … in whatever style suits your home. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. Fuse this with ‘wrethe’ from middle English (meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves) and you have the wreath as we know it today. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity, or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. In ancient Rome the symbol became a popular display of victory. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. At this bleak time of year, it’s wonderful to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn your wreath. The addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations had been taken down, the edible decorations would be eaten and the bounty of summer enjoyed in the depth of winter. Making your own wreath is fun and easy, and can vary from a simple and cheap evergreen circle to an elaborate bauble ring. For those who like a quick and easy option, simply buy a circle of oasis and soak it in tepid water, before sticking in sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden, flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows. If you have more time why not make your own base
by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay, holding it in place using thinner gauge wire, then wiring in the foliage and decorations. Be aware though that holly wreaths are tricky and gloves should be worn! The Americans seem to be leading the way in the contemporary wreath, so why not try something a little different this year such as a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, dried sweetcorn cobs, pussy willow or even a ring of astroturf! AUTO BIOGRAPHY
SSANGYONG MUSSO 2018
Tim Barnes-Clay has been testing the new Ssangyong Musso recently. Here are his thoughts on the Korean pick-up truck. You can try putting lipstick on a pig, but it still won’t make it beautiful – unless you’re into pigs. And that’s the point here. Unless you like pick-up trucks, you won’t be into the Ssangyong Musso. Now this name might be familiar to you. It’s a moniker that was used way back in the early 90s on a pug ugly SUV. This vehicle though is a strict pick-up with 4x4 capability. I happen to think it’s handsome too – and I’m not even into swine. There’s a reason for its good looks - the Musso has the identical body-on-chassis construction as the Ssangyong Rexton SUV. Indeed, it even has the same dashboard, which makes it feel quite upmarket. There are pliable materials covering the dash, the steering wheel is fully adjustable, and the switchgear doesn’t feel like it’s out of a Tonka toy. 92
The Town Crier Magazine | NOVEMBER 2018
The South Korean made pick-up is also furnished with kit such as an infotainment system, which is decent by any standards. The 9.2-inch display in some models is large, luminous and easy to operate. It also boasts Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, the Musso houses a remarkably hi-resolution reversing camera which even enables you to observe the tow bar. This is handy if you are lining-up up a trailer to lug. Towing is something that the new Ssangyong Musso is brilliant at. It’s the only pick-up in its segment that can haul a 3.5-tonne trailer while carrying up to a tonne in the load bed. The Mercedes-Benz obtained 2.2-litre oil-burner it uses is also enjoyed in the Rexton. However, the Musso is fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission rather than the seven-speed auto employed by the Rexton. It has lots of grunt and is smooth compared with, say, Ford’s Ranger. There’s plenty of space up front, and when it comes to rear passenger room, the Musso beats
its rivals, with only Nissan’s Navara coming close. And behind the wheel, whether towing or not, the pick-up feels okay-ish – in a straight line at least. The only fly in the ointment for the Musso is its rear springs. They bounce pugnaciously over ruts, while the somewhat soft damping battles to keep the pick-up’s frame in check. Things do recover, however, when the South Korean’s cab is full. And with a tonne of cargo in the rear load bed, it irons itself out considerably. Mind you, Ssangyong says it’s thinking about changing the rear springs to make things a little more manageable for UK driving. It still won’t make it a pick-up to hurl around bends though – but let’s face it, not many are suited to that. It feels substantial, and always will. That means it rolls a lot and will never match the Rexton or any other SUV for handling. The price-tag of the Ssangyong Musso makes you forgive its so-so handling. It’s cheaper than Mitsubishi’s L200 for starters. There are four trim levels to select, too. While the entry level EX is the most workhorse-like, it sits on alloy wheels and contains lots of factory-fitted equipment, including air conditioning, Bluetooth, and DAB radio. Over that, the Rebel boasts heated and cooled faux leather seats, and an eight-inch touchscreen. It also wears distinct external
graphics. The flagship Saracen and Rhino Mussos add real leather, that earlier mentioned 9.2-inch screen, and a heated steering wheel. What’s more, the Rhino rolls off the production line with ready-to-go all-terrain tyres, and black 20-inch alloys. Also standard on the Musso is a segmentleading seven-year, 150,000-mile warranty. That, more than anything, demonstrates how much faith Ssangyong has in its new model. Certainly, this pick-up is no pig in a wig – and you can forget the lipstick, too.

Hibernation It’s not easy being an animal in the winter. The weather is harsh, food is scarce and even drinking water can be hard to find if it freezes. If you’re a bird, you can survive by flying to warmer places, but what to do if you don’t have the benefit of wings and a huge amount of stamina? For some of our less mobile animals, hibernating is a way of surviving those colder months. Sleeping for many months takes up a lot of energy so these animals fatten themselves up over the autumn when food is plentiful. Here are some of our best winter nappers. If you’re clearing up your garden in winter, you may come across a hibernating hedgehog hiding under logs or leaf litter. Our prickly friends will usually hibernate from October through to April but are quite happy waking up on mild days to have a quick forage. Help feed up your local hedgehogs by putting down wet cat or dog food, dry
cat biscuits or even special hedgehog food which can be bought from rspb.org./shopping
digging a hole deep into soft soil, where she’ll sleep until the spring.
Hazel dormice are one of the most famous hibernators – even their name comes from the French word dormer meaning to sleep. These adorable creatures are the only British mouse to hibernate and can quite happily spend up to eight months curled up. Once in its nest, a dormouse will lower its body to just above freezing, its heart rate drops by 90%. Even during their active months in the summer, if there isn’t enough food they can go into a hibernation-like sleep (called torpor) to save energy. They really are quite dozy.
Some of our other insects have had the right idea and have taken to hibernating inside. Finding a cool spot in a shed or an outbuilding can give just the right amount of protection for a small ladybird or a peacock butterfly.
We have twenty-five different types of bumblebee in the UK - many with lovely names like ‘red-tailed’. We normally see them in the spring when they’re at their busiest but late in the summer is when most of the workers die off and it’s just the queen left. She’ll feast on nectar and pollen before
But problems occur when they come indoors, and we whack on the central heating. You may find yourself with very confused and wide-awake insects! If you find any insects in your house, gently moving them to an outside building will give them a better chance of survival. Being cold-blooded certainly means that reptiles and amphibians have to sleep over the winter. Slow worms are one of our native reptiles and despite looking like snakes, they’re actually legless lizards! They spend a lot of time underground but may share their winter home (called a hibernacula) with other reptiles. Bats are another sociable species, and some hibernate together in small groups. They need cool, constant temperatures and sometimes move to underground caves.
