Would you be surprised to find an unexpected “ treasure" hidden, in the tiny picturesque hamlet of Lacock, deep in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside? I was!

Two such little emporiums of delight are right in the centre of the village, “Watlings Gift Shop” is one and the other is quaintly named “ Lacock Antiques “.

Lacock Antiques

Antiques - Vintage - Collectables We also offer a warm welcome at our ‘in house’ coffee shop - feel free to browse our extensive showroom and then enjoy a bite to eat or hot and cold beverages, whilst residing a in wonderful olde world atmosphere ...

01249 730444 - 07810 303646 22 Church Street, Lacock www.lacockantiques.co.uk

Both shops are a delight and the smiling personal service makes browsing a real pleasure. Offering a wide range of services in and around Wiltshire, Lacock Antiques specialise in antiques and vintage sales, restoration and re upholstery, contents valuations, probate clearance. Just the place to visit to have a cherished chair made “ new “ again, or find that item for your home you have been searching for. Wiltshire being the home of antiques both vintage and quirky, you are certain to find that elusive item you maybe didn’t even know you wanted – until you saw it. If like me, you can’t resist interesting little shops with packed shelves and fascinating items everywhere you look, you need go no further than “Watlings Gift Shop” where you will be assured of a warm welcome by Anthea, who is quite rightly proud of her little “kingdom”.

Packed with Harry Potter merchandise and eye catching jewellery, the display of cards and small items to brighten your interior is constantly changing with new stock arriving every week. Open every day including Sundays, it is a fantastic browsers' paradise, and those amongst the more savvy tourists as well as those just visiting for the day, might even find the odd stocking filler or two to put away for under next year's Christmas tree, or perhaps an approaching birthday, christening, wedding or anniversary. (or that little something that catches your eye that you suddenly know you want for yourself !) When your feet start to ache and your shopping bag begins too feel heavy (and it will!), a steaming hot cup of tea and perhaps a delicious cake await you back at the “Lacock Antiques “ café – the “ Corner Stone", tucked inside the shop where, surrounded by antiques, you can rest awhile and muse on the great day and the interesting things you’ve seen and bought.

Organise an Easter Egg Hunt!

By Sarah Davey

You can give chocolate egg prizes for the most creative, the prettiest, the funniest etc

The Scrambled Egg Hunt - This is a great Easter egg hunt idea for older kids. At each station leave cards with single letters written on them, or a set of plastic toy letters. The challenge is to rearrange the letters to spell the word of the next place to find a clue, for example 'bath' or 'shed' or ‘stairs’. At the final station they get to collect their eggs. Colour-Coded Easter Egg Hunt - Use a pack of eggs in different colours. Give each child a colour. They can only collect eggs which match that colour.

Bunny Vouchers Easter Egg Hunt Easter egg hunts are great fun, but it can be hard to come up with original ideas. Depending on the ages of the children the hunt can be easy or fiendishly difficult. Here are some ideas... Bunny Bounce Challenge -

Set up different activity posts around the garden or park. At each one, the kids need to complete a physical challenge in order to receive an egg. The challenges could include star jumps, hopping, hula-hooping, or doing a silly dance.

Easter Rhyme Challenge - If you're good at rhymes, create a set of rhyming clues that take the children from one hiding place to another until they find the eggs. Pirate Bunny Treasure Hunt - Create a treasure map which the children have to follow to discover where the chocolate eggs are hidden. Perhaps a paw print or an Easter Egg could mark the spot instead of an X Easter Craft Challenge - Set up different craft activities around the house or garden. For each cute Easter craft your child completes, they win a little chocolate egg. Easter Bonnet Competition - Challenge the kids to create their own Easter bonnets from craft materials and old hats (Charity shops are great for cheap hats).

10

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2019

Some children can't have chocolate due to a medical condition, so instead of chocolate treats, pop little slips of paper inside plastic eggs. Each slip should have a little treat written on it for your child to claim over the next week or so; things like ' go trampolining with my dad', or 'fly a kite with mummy.

Egg Decoder Hunt - Take apart colourful hollow plastic eggs and put them back together with mismatched colours. The children must work in teams to find the eggs hidden around the garden, take them apart and put them back together with the matching colour. The team with the most colour-matched eggs wins the big prize

Happy hunting!

48!

ADVERTISING FEATURE

48 is the number of years that there has been a folk festival associated with Chippenham. Starting way back in 1972 in Lacock it has grown to a huge celebration of Traditional folk Arts, music and dance. The current organisers Bob & Gill Berry, who were asked to step in and help out in 1989 are retiring, after 25 years, from the job. They are passing on the baton to a great team, many of whom have been part of the festival for many years which will bring continuity of the festival for years to come. So with this year being a bit of a celebration it is good practice run for the 50th which is coming up soon. This year has some really fine artists on the line-up. The Wilson Family (these were the big guys singing with Sting on the film “The Last Ship”), Bob Fox (the just retired Song Man in the Warhorse productions and young super group Grannies Attic, award nominated performers.

Immensely proud of their local area, the Claridge family have been involved in community life for many years through such things as the Ambulance Service, local events, charity work and providing funeral services, all this earning them a reputation for care, compassion and dedication.

Offering a calm, quiet and private place for you to spend as much time as you need. Our chapel is spacious and light to accommodate all of our families who visit. We are also the only Funeral Directors in the area to have the facilities to hold small services.

Our office and chapel are situated in a quiet courtyard in Marlborough town centre.

“To all at Claridges, thank you so much for everything you have done to make this time so much easier and unique for us all, we were really pleased that we were advised to talk to a number of funeral directors before choosing someone to look after mum – we really knew we had chosen the best” Mrs S, Marlborough

Funeral Plans A funeral plan is a thoughtful way to plan ahead, and make things easier for your family at a difficult time. All of your wishes can be recorded, including choices of music, bespoke transport, and even the route you would like to take on the funeral day. By taking out a funeral plan, you are fixing the cost of the funeral director’s services, and setting aside a sum of money to cover disbursement fees, otherwise known as third party costs. These include:

• The Church or crematorium fee • A minister or civil celebrant • Doctor’s fees (if cremation) Please feel free to visit one of our branches if you would like a more in-depth explanation, or to pick up some literature regarding funeral plans. If you have decided you would like to take out a funeral plan, please arrange an appointment to come in and talk through your wishes with one of our funeral directors.

Top legal considerations when planning for later life? We asked Andrew Douglas, Partner at Awdry Bailey & Douglas Solicitors who specialises elderly care, for his views on this issue? What do you think is the most important consideration? In my opinion making life easier for those who have to care for you in later life is a number one priority. Making Lasting powers of Attorney for both Property and Finance and Health and Welfare is arguably the most vital thing to do. These documents can only be made whilst you have capacity and provide for trusted people, your attorneys to make decisions with you if you so wish or by themselves if you are not able. Is a Will important? Statistics suggest that 70% of people do not have Wills or need to review existing Wills. A Will allows you to choose how to leave your estate without being dictated to by the state under the rules of intestacy. There are many different types of Will which are designed to fit different types of circumstance. The choice is yours and makes life easier for those who have to manage your estate when you die. What about houses? For most people their house is their biggest asset. An important consideration is whether in later life you should own your house jointly or as tenants in common. The latter arrangement allows you to leave your share of the house in your Will meaning you can decide who it is left to. The former means that your house does not get into your Will and is left automatically to surviving joint owners, which might not be sensible from a care planning or tax point of view. What other considerations are important? Understanding the basics about Inheritance tax, so that you know what reliefs are available to leave your estate in a tax efficient way. It is also important to understand why in later life investing in Investment Bonds is tax and long term care efficient. Trusts, immediate care needs plans, funeral plans and nominating out of your estate death benefits that arise on your death also need to be considered. To know more and for a free appointment to find out answers to the questions that need answering email Andrew Douglas or his team on ajd@awdrys. co.uk or call on 0800 072 8636. The firm has offices In Marlborough, Royal Wootton Basset, Devizes & Chippenham. Alternatively visit www. abdcare.co.uk

Tell Us Once..

Having to inform numerous organisations that a loved one has died is both emotionally draining and time consuming. The Tell us Once service lets you report a death to most government agencies in one go. When you register the death the registrar will tell you if the Tell us Once service is available in your area. If it is, you’ll be give a contact phone number and a unique reference number. You can also access the service at https://www.gov.uk/after-a-death Tell us Once notifies relevant organisations including: HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) - to deal with tax and cancel benefits; Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) - to cancel benefits like Income Support; and the Driver and vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) - to cancel a driving licence. If Tell us Once isn’t available in your area you will have to contact the different organisations separately.

Personal Will Writing • Professional will writing service in the comfort of your own home. • Feel confident your instructions are drafted precisely and confidentially. • Couples can protect their home from residential care fees. • Lasting power of attorney. • Living Wills. HOME FOCUS Update with Accessories Have you ever been to a Home Décor shop and bought a gorgeous candle or cushion, and brought it home only to feel slightly disappointed that it hasn’t totally transformed your room? I know this is something I’ve been guilty of in the past. Beautiful stores like Laura Ashley, John Lewis and the like, display their wares in such a fashion that it’s easy to get drawn into purchasing that ‘perfect’ thing. But the reality is you will probably need to buy more than one in order to create the ultimate impact. To illustrate this, next time you look at a beautifully styled room or showroom, take a good look at how the space has been set out. Notice if the design is simplistic or ‘busier’ and consider how these looks would place themselves in your home. It’s no good going for a minimalistic or monochromatic feel if you live in a gorgeous country cottage full of velvets and gilted frames (unless you like the eclectic look of course!). Consider the vibe you want to create and look at your existing pieces before you commit to adding to them. Notice how pieces are cleverly grouped together - oftentimes a pair of objects placed symmetrically on a table can look far better than one sitting on its own. Equally a row of three things are visually appealing, particularly on a mantelpiece or windowsill. Popular at the moment are succulents in copper or rose gold containers and miniature ones look super grouped together on a shelf or glass tray.

beeswax or other materials that don’t contain parrafin as this can release toxins into your home that can be harmful. Fresh flowers in simple glass vases are great for an instant room refresh. As well as vibrant colours and the touch of nature that they inject, the scent may be good enough to brighten the mood and make your room feel luxurious. Picture frames are reasonably priced nowadays so take a look at the ones you currently have and consider if they need an update. Again rose gold or plain white are good options for a fashionable choice and don’t detract much from the pictures enclosed. Hanging pictures can be a bit of an art too - get inspiration from Pinterest and see how best to group them on the wall.

If you want to buy a cushion, consider buying them in a set - group them together by colour tone or pattern and set smaller ones in front Consider what you put on your coffee table. Whilst it has practical uses of course, it is also of larger ones for a sumptuous and elegant a great place to display beautiful books. look on a bed or sofa. There are many hardbacks on sale now that Candles are particularly good pieces to cover a multitude of interesting topics freshen up your home décor but be careful to fashion, architecture, nature and cooking are choose ones that are made from soy, 40

all great ones to dip into when you’re relaxing with a drink and once replaced onto the table will look beautiful too. Just make sure you place them considerately by size or colour and keep the table free of clutter and dust to display them at their best. Try not to clutter your room with accessories. A few well chosen pieces will look far better than adding more and more - then your one little cushion that you bring back won’t be sitting there looking lost in a sea of confusion!

White Bear

THE PUB: The couple who now run the pub and live there along with their young daughter Leia and their three dogs Treacle, Jaguar and Tumbles, have spent the last few months bringing a new energy to a community asset with an enviable heritage.

With its first recorded landlord dated back to 1567, the White Bear is on the corner of Monday Market Street, Devizes, and is a joy to enter. With a cosy feel and three main areas, this family and dog friendly pub offers food, a range of beers and accommodation. The change has come about thanks to Georgie, 25 and Marc, 32, who have been tenants for the last five months. Both have a background in the hospitality trade working in many different cities and towns, they decided to seriously look for their first pub tenancy when they found out they were expecting their first child.

Georgie said: “We looked at several pubs before this opportunity came up. Now that we are here it’s fantastic. We absolutely love it, I grew up in Cornwall where much business was seasonal and there was a small village mentality. Here there’s a thriving town, it’s a great place to bring up our daughter and we can take our dogs for so many good walks.” “It’s just a good size town with a village feel,” Marc commented. This young couple are refreshing in a pub which has so much heritage and so many stories it’s difficult to work out where reality and folklore begin and end. There are multiple ghost stories associated with the pub – so much so in a few weeks the tv programme Ghost Response (Amazon Prime) will be filming from the pub. One story which does resonate relates to the cherub mural above the bar which, the story goes, was created by a man who rented a room for a period of time, ran up a bill and then couldn’t pay. He created the image to clear his debt. The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2019

Table Talk by Fiona Scott

The

THE CHEF:

The man behind the food and the menu is Marc himself. Originally from Burnley, moving to North Devon in childhood, Marc has led a colourful life in hospitality. He’s been a chef for 18 years after starting work as a kitchen porter from the age of 13. Very quickly he started helping out with starters and desserts and honed a love of good food. During his career he’s worked his way up the ladder from ‘potwash’ to headchef and has worked at establishments with two and three AA rosettes. 50

He’s also taken a whole year out to live sustainably ‘off the land’ in a caravan on deciding he needed a ‘gap year’ from the frenetic life of a chef. Today his attitude to food at The White Bear is quite different. The menu is based almost on a ‘tapas’ mentality of sharing food to create an ‘interactive’ dining experience. Throughout the week, the menu is a sharing platter, based upon a range of tasting plates which can be purchased and will feature strong ingredients and seasonal produce. When I visited these platters included Moroccan spiced lamb shoulder and polenta fritti with white truffle and parmesan. Increasingly popular is the Sunday Roast (which must be booked in advance) where there are three meats on offer. Marc plans to expand this already popular Sunday meal and build on the fact he was – in a previous role – nominated several times for the title of Bristol’s Best Roasts. Where possible Marc uses local suppliers and these include Devizes’ own shops The Little Bakehouse and C W Butchers.

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2019

THE BEER:

The White Bear is trying a different strategy around beer thanks to the willingness of Georgie and Marc to embrace a new way of working. Unlike other Wadworth pub tenants, they are trialling the concept of offering different micro-brewery products – not offering just Wadworth beers. They are able to offer customers two well known Wadworth brands alongside four other beers which come largely from the South West. These will change throughout 2019. At the time of writing the beers on offer were:

*Wadworth IPA *Twisted from Westbury *Ramsbury Beer *Yeovil *Swordfish *Blackcurrant Bitter (Wadworth)

White Truffle, Parmesan Polenta Chips • • • • • • • •

2 ltr Vegetable Bouillon (vegetable stock) 500g Polenta Olive oil, to grease 150g finely grated parmesan 25ml White Truffle Oil Vegetable oil, to deep-fry Pinch of finely chopped fresh parsley Sea salt flakes & freshly ground black pepper

Method: Step 1 Brush two 22 x 30cm baking trays with olive oil to lightly grease. Step 2 Bring the stock to the boil in a large heavy-based saucepan over medium-high heat. Use a balloon whisk and gradually add the polenta in a thin steady stream, whisking constantly until all the polenta is incorporated into the stock. Reduce the heat to medium and cook, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, for 2 minutes or until mixture thickens and polenta is soft. Remove from heat and stir the parmesan and truffle oil through the polenta mix, check the seasoning and adjust the salt and pepper to taste.

Step 3

Pour the polenta evenly over the prepared baking trays cover with non-stick baking paper and set aside to cool. Place in the fridge for 4/6 hours or overnight to set. Turn the polenta onto a clean work surface. Use a sharp knife to cut off the curved edges. Cut lengthways into 2cm strips. Cut each strip into 8cm-long pieces.

Step 4

Add enough oil to a large heavybased saucepan to reach a depth of 6cm. Heat to 180C over high heat. Add the polenta chips and deep-fry for 5 minutes or until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer chips to a plate lined with paper towel.

Step 5

Transfer polenta chips to a serving plate. Grate lashings of parmesan, sprinkle with chopped parsley and drizzle over some more white truffle oil. Serve immediately.

BED & BREAKFAST: Another service offered by the couple and their staff is bespoke bed and breakfast accommodation. There are six rooms on offer: three doubles, two twins and one single. Three have been recently renovated and all offer, tv, wi-fi and are ALL dog friendly. The cost per night starts at £75 and includes a full English breakfast or other breakfast choices on request. The White Bear may, in the past, have been something of a hidden gem in Devizes – however do give it a try. It has a cosy heritage feel with a surprising modern vibe and caters for regulars and visitors alike.

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Serves: 4-6

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium shallot, finely chopped (about 2 tablespoons) 1 medium clove garlic, finely chopped (about 1 teaspoon) 1 (5-oz) bag baby spinach 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh flat-leaved parsley or basil. Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 10 eggs, beaten 1/4 cup milk 3/4 cup (about 3.5 ounces) crumbled feta

52

Method Preheat the grill. Heat olive oil in an 8-inch pan over a medium high heat. Add chopped shallots and cook for 2-3 minutes beginning to soften. Add garlic and continue to cook for a further two minutes until softened. Add spinach and parsley (or basil) and cook, tossing often until spinach is fully wilted and any water released by the spinach has cooked off. Season to taste with salt and pepper. In a large bowl, beat eggs and milk with a whisk until mixed together. Don't over-beat. Add feta, and season with salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture over spinach then gently stir with a spatula to release the spinach from the bottom of the pan so that the eggs are in direct contact with the surface of the pan, so they cook quickly. Cook until the eggs are almost totally set (this takes 10-12 minutes), reducing heat to prevent burning. Place pan under the grill for a couple of minutes, until the top is set as well, keeping a close eye on it so it does not burn. To release the frittata from the pan, loosen edges with a spatula. Place a dinner plate over pan, and holding plate firmly flip the pan over so the frittata releases onto the plate. Serve warm.

pepper to season, stir well and leave to chill in the fridge. 4. When the pea mixture is thoroughly chilled, mould it around each of the hard boiled eggs, pressing to ensure an even coverage. Place on a tray and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 5. To coat: Crack the egg into a bowl and beat until the white and yolk are combined. Roll the peacoated eggs in the beaten egg mixture, before rolling them in the breadcrumbs. Try to ensure an even coating all over the eggs. 6. Pour the oil into a frying pan to a depth of around 2.5cm (1 inch). Place over a high heat and once the oil is hot, add the breaded eggs being careful not to splash the hot oil. Use a spoon to gently move the eggs around the pan, ensuring they don’t stick and that they’re evenly cooked. 7. Place the cooked eggs on a tray lined with kitchen roll to drain any excess oil. 8. Serve hot or store in the fridge (once they’ve cooled).

The Perfect Pear! By Kath McLean

They may look a little underwhelming with their crinkly green skin, but avocado-lovers know that the fresh creamy flesh is simply delicious and a perfect complement to eggs, smoked bacon, griddled chicken...I could go on.

With Easter round the corner why not enter our competition to win a home made chocolate ice cream cake from local artisan producer

Rays Ice Cream.

The avocado pear turns out not to be a pear at all, but a berry. It also turns out to be pretty much the perfect food. They have a reputation for being 'bad' and high in calories. It's true that a medium-sized avocado contains 30g of fat (as much as a quarter-pound burger!) but an avocado's fat is mostly monounsaturated fat (that's the good kind). Studies have shown that avocado eaters are less at risk for metabolic syndrome, which also puts them at less risk of type-2 diabetes and heart attacks. Avocados contain folate, an important nutrient for pregnant women and infants, and interestingly have also been shown to slow and possibly reverse memory loss in Alzheimer's patients. If you are weaning your baby, avocados are a great first food because of their soft texture, and nutritional benefits, like healthy fats for brain development. Avocados are high in carotenoids so offer skin protection against aging caused by UV damage. They also have anti-inflammatory properties, which is good for people with rheumatoid arthritis but also because inflammation has been linked to Alzheimer’s, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and cancer.

So, check out the avocados on the supermarket shelf, and treat yourself to some green 'n' creamy goodness.

This delicious cake is made from Rays home made chocolate ice cream and will serve eight to ten people. Don't worry if you haven't got that many people over for Easter, you can take a few slices and keep the rest in your freezer for up to six months. To be in with a chance of winning this ice cream cake, worth ÂŁ20, simply tell us the answer to this question by emailing us at: contact@towncriermagazine.com

Which of these IS NOT a common ingredient in ice cream? a) Cream

b) Sugar

c) Flour

One winner will be chosen at random on 10th April 2019. The winner will be notified via email and will be able to collect their prize from Rays Ice Cream's Royal Woottom Bassett shop during opening hours on or after (date of your choosing). The shop is at 2 Potters Walk, Royal Wootton Bassett, SN4 7AY. If you don't like taking chances and want to make sure you get your cake for Easter you can always pop onto their online shop and order yours!

The Civil Service Retirement

Fellowship (CSRF) Chief Executive David Tickner joined members of the Chippenham group at Chippenham Museum yesterday to recognise their work within the community

For over half a century The

Civil Service Retirement Fellowship has been providing a forum for friendship and companionship to retired people in towns across the country via its local community group network.

Established

initially as a charity to support former civil servants and their dependents it has evolved in recent years to offer services to those in later life. These currently include a local community group network, two national befriending schemes (Phone Buddy & National Visitors Network) and information and advice. The group network provides a valuable service to retired and older people within the community offering an important forum for friendship and companionship, educational speakers and leisure activities. The Chippenham group has been running for over 30 years and is keen to attract new interest from within the town and local area.

CSRF Chief Executive David Tickner visited the group for its Annual General Meeting yesterday to show the organisations national support of its group services and to also help encourage new interest in the group. All the groups are run by volunteers, many of whom spent their whole careers in public service. The charity receives no government funding and relies on fundraising activities and donations to support its work and their 2019 Connecting Our Communities initiative is designed to recognise and

celebrate the group networks contribution to community life. The Chippenham group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Chippenham Museum, 10 Market Place, Chippenham SN15 3HF. All local retired people are welcome at group meetings. You can find out more information about the group online at www.csrf.org.uk/chippenham

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of complement ar y therapy commonly referred to as energy healing.

It has been around for thousands of years but it's current form was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui. It is said to involve the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner's palms to their patient. Some controversy surrounds Reiki, because it is hard to prove its effectiveness through scientific means. But many people believe it works. The word 'Reiki' means 'mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign.' It comes from the Japanese words 'rei' (universal) and 'ki' (life energy). The idea of Reiki is that is channels energy from the practitioner to target and work on the energy channels of the patient. According to practitioners, energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or emotional pain. If not released these these energy blocks can cause illness. By improving the flow of energy around the body, practitioners say they can enable relaxation, reduce pain, and speed healing.

60

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2019

Reiki is held in a peaceful setting. The patient will remain fully clothed, and sit in a comfortable chair, or lie on a table. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand shapes, for between 2 and 5 minutes. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body. If there is an active injury, the hands may be held just above the wound.

The transfer of energy takes place while the hands are held over the patient. During this time, the practitioner's hands may be warm and tingling. Each hand position is held until the practitioner senses that the energy has stopped flowing. When the practitioner feels that the heat, or energy, in their hands has abated, they will remove their hands and place them over a different area of the body. Sessions can last 15-90 minutes. The number of sessions will vary, depending on what a client wishes to accomplish.

According to practitioners, the healing effects are mediated by channeling the universal energy known as qi, pronounced 'chi.' It is the life force energy that some people believe surrounds all of us. Reiki experts say that while this energy is not measurable by modern scientific techniques, it can be felt by those who can tune in to it. Reiki is said to induce deep relaxation, help people cope with difficulties, relieve emotional stress, and improve overall wellbeing. People who love Reiki describe it as 'intensely relaxing.' Reiki is used to help treat many conditions including: cancer, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. Patients report feeling better after a session. Research from Cancer Research U.K. says that one reason could be that the therapist spends time with them and touches them. This is soothing for patients who may be overwhelmed by invasive therapy, fear, and stress. Individuals report different experiences. Some say that the practitioner's hands become hot, others report cooling hands and some people feel pulsating waves. The most common reports are of a release By Louise Addison

Are you in need of a ‘Spring Detox’? What is a toxin? A toxin can be an excess of any form of contaminant stored in the body. We also have various bacteria to keep our immune system busy and we have moulds, particularly from damp houses which have not been properly ventilated over the winter months.

STEP 1: Certain foods are natural detox agents such as asparagus, avocado, beetroot, black-eyed beans, broccoli, chickpeas, garlic, lentils, organic liver, onions, pinto beans and spinach.

STEP 3: Get expert help and a protocol specifically tailored to you. Your general state of health and medical history make you unique so your detox should be unique as well. For example, juicing every day because it made your neighbour feel great may not suit you.

STEP 2: Specific nutritional supplements boost detox effects even more by providing specialised support, for example, specifically targeted at viruses, bacteria, moulds or fungus. It’s best to do this with the help of a nutritionist or you could waste a lot of money on the wrong or poor quality products.

We hear the term ‘Spring Detox’ a lot at this time of year - what does this really mean? Is it about fasting? Eating different foods? Going on a retreat and just having raw foods and juice? The answer is: it depends what you are detoxing from. There are steps anyone can take without going to extremes.

One of my clients Erica, said recently: “I feel so much better, I can’t believe what a difference this has made. I’ve recommended Helen to all my friends.”

How to do it ...

You'll need:

5 tblspn organic coconut oil 1 tablespoon pure sweet almond oil | 7-10 tblspn granulated sugar Fresh Rose Petals

Put coconut oil, almond oil, sugar and cleaned rose petals in a blender. Blend coarsely but smooth enough to apply to skin. Add your favourite essential oils for 10 mins so the nutrients of sugar and rose mix with the oils.

Mobile Hairdresser

SPECIALISING IN WEDDING HAIR

Apply a sufficient amount of sugar scrub to wet skin over your entire body, massaging in a circular motion for 3-5 minutes to allow the granules to remove dead skin cells. Finally, rinse well. This makes your skin look and feel refreshed. Store the rose sugar scrub in an airtight container for 5-7 days and keep under room temperature.

How to run with a buggy

Making time to run and making running Posture a priority is hard if you have just had a baby, however it does not mean that you have to give up running completely, it just means looking for an alternative that both parents can be involved in. Advice varies on when you should run with a baby in a running buggy but it is generally recommended that babies should be able to sit up and hold their head properly before you start running with them, so around six to nine months of age.

Running

with a buggy is different from normal running as you are using different muscles and therefore there is a different technique needed so stay injury free to get the many benefits out of running with a buggy. For me the most important thing is the safety of your child and having control of your buggy at all times is paramount; if you run one handed you are not in control of the buggy or the baby, it is very easy for the buggy to tip over if you drive over a stone or get the front wheel caught in a crack in the pavement. Proper running buggies that have been designed for running come with a strap attached and if you have a swivel front wheel ensure that it is in the locked position. The buggy should also have adjustable handles so that they can adjust to your height and you are comfortable running with the correct posture so you are not hunched over which puts pressure on your back.

You should run tall and in the direction that you are travelling in, your shoulders should be relaxed, back and down, if you try running with your shoulders bunched up to your ears, this should feel uncomfortable and unnatural and you would soon tire if you continued to run like this over any distance. Relax your shoulders and keep your head high, look ahead of you with your jaw relaxed and your mouth open. Run from your ankles and not from your hips and keep your belly braced. Running with a buggy is a great workout for your core muscles just pull the belly button into your back. Imagine that you have a bowl of water in your pelvis; the idea is that you do not spill the water so keep your hips stable and balanced when running, tuck your tailbone in as this pushes the hips forward and engages the glutes. Having a strong core enables you to drive your legs up and off the ground and pushing a buggy gives you extra strength and stability as long as you keep your posture.

Arms

To see how important arms are when you run try running 10m with your arms above your head or behind your back. By doing this hopefully you will see how out of control and uncoordinated you may feel and how much your arms balance you. When running with a buggy you are unable to use your arms so this can lead to an imbalance, and running with one hand on the buggy and the other hand driving back can lead to injury as your body will “collapse into itself every time your foot strikes. Keep an eye on this especially when you get tired as your posture will be the first thing to go. Both hands should be on the buggy and your core should be tight and controlled, Running with a buggy is hard work however it will make you a stronger runner because when you run without a buggy you will feel a huge difference. REASONS

TO

JOIN GYM

THE By Louise Addison

Health benefits

Regular exercise has been proven to reduce your risk of cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease. It's also been proven to increase your good blood cholesterol and improve mental health.

Professional guidance Stronger mind

Exercise actually increases brain function. Because it improves the flow of blood to your brain it helps the brain remain healthy, increasing the ability to grow new nerve fibres and replace damaged ones, thus reducing your risk of Alzheimer’s.

Good gyms have well-trained professional staff who can instruct you how to use equipment safely and give advice about technique and nutrition. So, there's no excuse. Pop along to your local gym today and start reaping the benefits of regular exercise.

Exercise helps to burn unwanted fat and increase muscle mass, helping you control your weight and maintain it at a healthy level.

Motivation

Committing to a regular workout is not easy. And sometimes when we don’t get quick results, we tend to give up. At a gym you will see and meet people like you, slowly building towards their goal. That sense of being part of a like-minded community is very motivating.

Socialising

Some of those people you nod and smile at in the gym will go on to become friends. The gym is an excellent place to hang out with people whose goals are aligned with yours.

Uninterrupted workout routine

While your running or cycling routine might be interrupted by the weather, if you're a gym member you can simply rock up there and exercise all year long. 68

Swing Birds The 28th of April 2019 is a very special date. Not only is it the fifth annual outing for Swindon’s only all female big band, Swing Birds, but this year it also falls on Bird-in-Chief Mo Squires’ birthday! Come and join us to celebrate this momentous occasion with an evening of music and fun at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon! In addition to tried and tested big band classics, Swing Birds also feature exceptional new arrangements by talented local musicians. Blues and wartime-era swing are blended confidently with current hits from the charts, stage and screen, many featuring their fabulous vocalists. As ever, the audience can expect to be surprised, entertained and delighted! Our special guest will, once again, be the immensely talented drummer, Crissy Lee. Crissy has been drumming all her life and is widely acclaimed as being Europe’s finest female drummer. A distinguished career, including as drummer for the Ivy Benson Band, has seen her travel the globe, appearing on numerous TV shows and sharing the stage with some of the world’s greatest celebrities, and even touring with the Beatles.

Swing Birds will be supporting Swindon Cares to help raise money for Swindon Night Shelter via a collection on the night. More information at www.swindontheatres.co.uk or contact the Ticket office on 01793 524481.

ADVENTURES in a WOBBLEBOX Keeping your life in tow! Our wobblebox adventures started with a modicum of protest from my other half who loudly declared that he “simply wasn’t old enough” to own a caravan, nor did he look anything like “one of those caravan owners”. He spent several months thinking that his reasoning was justified, and regularly played his Ace Card (aka “our car simply won’t tow one”). But being a man, he spotted a very nice replacement car when ours started to show signs of age and I, being a clever female with a more cunning brain, allowed him to believe that his new choice of car was rather marvellous and inspired. A few months passed and we decided to go to the NEC to look at the motorhomes at the Annual Caravan and Motorhome show. I wheedled my way into the caravan area where he opened his mouth to protest and realised, as I stood watching him gawping like a fish, that he no longer had his Ace Card to play.

He quickly went for his second point of resistance, but realised that this was also fruitless, having hit a very significant birthday only a few weeks before. So with a knowing grin I led him to the biggest caravan I could find (knowing that this might appease him a little) and jumped inside with glee. He reluctantly followed me but I could see his surprise as he surveyed the space, the value for money and the potential that this wobblebox had over our (now ageing) motorhome. Within the space of a couple of hours he was eating a very large slice of humble pie, and we were drinking a lovely glass of champagne having ordered a 26ft long wobblebox ready for the summer.

Bring on the

adventures! The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2019

THINK SMART

Leaving obvious political issues out of the equation, one of the most emotive issues recently has been that of plastic pollution. David Attenborough’s documentaries about the Blue Planet has wowed millions in recent years, but in some ways more powerful was the BBC documentary, ‘Drowning in Plastic’. The shock of the state of our oceans has been talked about widely, especially in schools, where the next generation are up in arms and keen to be eco-warriors. We have been forced to adopt the concept of re-using shopping bags, due to the tax on disposable ones. Should we not adopt more of a re-use culture without it being forced upon us?

SMARTY

PANTS

The Old Granary, Townsend Farm, Horton, Wiltshire SN10 3NE SMARTY PANTS is a clever little idea to assist in the sale of nearly new children’s clothes… Most of us have bought a pretty dress or smart shirt for a child to attend a wedding or family function and found that despite best intentions this item is only worn once! Smarty Pants can help... Bring your quality children’s clothes to SMARTY PANTS and sell them to other like-minded individuals whose small people are just a bit smaller than yours. At the same time there are bargains to be had from those who have small people just a little bigger than yours and have outgrown lots of lovely clothes. SMARTY PANTS splits all proceeds from sales 50:50. When is SMARTY PANTS open? The shop is open on Tuesdays and Fridays between 9am and 1pm or by appointment. Email: smartypants@thetoytree.co.uk or call 01380 860 096 during opening hours for an appointment.

Disposable fashion contributes millions of nonrecyclable items to landfill weekly. Surely, it would be more prudent to buy quality longer-lasting items of clothing that can be worn for years. Children’s fashion is a particular problem, with fancy dress costumes and party wear at the extreme of the spectrum, possibly being only worn once before binned. The other obvious problem is that children often grow out of clothes before they are worn out, so why spend money on quality clothes that will not give you their full value? A solution is to buy second hand. Second hand is sometimes a dirty word, so why not say ‘vintage’ or ‘pre-loved’. There are several advantages. One is cost. Quality items that have hundreds of wears left for a fraction of the price. Two, for the fashion conscious, is that you are much less likely to see your child in the same t-shirt as everybody else is wearing as it may be a couple of seasons old. And finally, and possibly most importantly, the environment wins. So think smart and think about a visit to Smarty Pants!

Tick, Tick, Tick Dr Iain Hunt BVMS MRCVS

www.georgevetgroup.co.uk The George Veterinary Hospital, Malmesbury 01666 823165 The George Veterinary Group, Royal Wootton Bassett 01793 852458 With winter behind us, and the weather warming, ticks become more of an issue for us and our pets. Here is all you need to know to keep your pets protected.

What are Ticks?

Ticks are small, eight-legged creepy crawlies with a round white-ish body and are commonly found in grassland and woodland, but can also be seen in your garden if you live in an area with lots of wildlife. They are most active between March and October and are most commonly seen in warm wet weather. Sitting at the top of grass stalks, ticks wait for you or your pet to brush past, then jump on and attach themselves. They bite and then feed on blood almost tripling in size; once they are full they will then drop off.

Why are Ticks an issue?

Ticks have very sharp mouthparts that can cause inflammation around the area of the bite. They can also act as ‘vectors’ which means they can carry microorganisms and spread disease between animals and humans when they feed. In the UK these include Lymes disease, Ehrlichia and Babesia. LYMES DISEASE: This is an inflammatory disease caused by a bacteria found in their saliva. The clinical signs in your pet manifest as a distinctive bulls-eye circular rash around the area of the bite, lameness and fever. In humans the symptoms are extreme tiredness, muscle pain and weakness, joint pain, headaches and the bull eyes rash. However it is important to know that you won’t always see a rash. EHRLICHIA: This is a bacterial infection of the white blood cells. In dogs the signs include fever, reduced appetite, weight loss, stiffness and prolonged bleeding. This is rare in the UK and is most commonly seen in pets that have travelled abroad; however, we are increasingly seeing it in animals with no history of travelling. BABESIA: This is a tick-borne disease that infects the red blood cells. Clinical signs include loss of appetite, fever, anaemia, weakness and brown discoloured urine. It is rare in the UK but like Ehrlichia, can be seen in pets that have travelled abroad – in particular Europe, Africa and Asia. In rare cases we can see outbreaks in pets with no travel history. 76

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2019

How do I remove a Tick?

To reduce the risk of infection it is best to remove the tick as soon as possible. It is important that you remove the entire tick including its mouthparts as otherwise, if this is left behind, it can cause inflammation and infection. You must also remove it without squeezing the tick’s body. The best way to do this is by using a tick hook as it safely and effectively removes the tick every time and is easyOpen to use – these from 8th can be purchased from any of our branches. Simply Opening hours slide the hook around the tick, keeping it level Monday - Friday 8.3 with the skin, and gentle Saturday 8.30-12.3 twist anti-clockwise. Once 01249 loose, pull the hook away588805 and dispose of 41-42 the tickNew by Road flushing it down the toilet. Chippenham Avoid methods of removal SN15 1HL such as burning or covering enquiries@chalklandve in Vaseline or alcohol as this stresses the tick and can www.chalklandvets.c cause it to regurgitate its meal back into the host – increasing risk of infection.

How do I prevent Ticks?

There are many products on the market such as spot-ons and tablets that diffuse the anti-parasitic treatment into the fatty layer of your pet’s skin and will cause the tick to detach itself but the tick will still have to bite for this to be effective. If your pet is particularly prone to ticks there are also anti-parasitic products available that both repel and kill ticks – it’s worth discussing this option with your vet. Keep up to date with any flea and tick treatment and this is essential if you are travelling with your pet as tick-borne diseases are often more common in other countries. If you have any questions please feel free to pop into one of our local branches and one of our team will be happy to advise you further.

WATERING AND WELLIES

If you want an easier, tidier way to garden, look no further than a raised bed.

BETTER BEDS

Affording a gentler working position, fewer weeds and better soil, this is the perfect answer to many gardener’s woes.

N

o matter how good your current soil is, a raised bed will give you a miraculous improvement in soil quality, simply because you’ve increased the drainage which is critical to many popular garden plants. In addition, in colder climates, better drainage prevents the soil from staying cold for too long, so this will give you a faster start in the springtime. So not only will your plants thank you, but your body will too. Whether you are young or old, being able to tend to your plants without the back-breaking bending that often comes with it is a joy. You can throw out those pesky knee-cushions with gay abandon and simply rely

78

The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2019

on standing, or even a small stool if you feel the need to perch when you have a trickier weeding job.

Raised beds have proved particularly welcome in our home where our mum is wheelchair bound. A previously avid gardener, she would literally be pottering and digging all day but of course that’s nigh on impossible when one is confined to four wheels. By placing plants higher up, it means that she can reach to plant up seeds, tend to the weeds or take cuttings and she really feels as though the garden is responding to her again, because she can really be a part of it. In addition, the raised beds confine the soil which means that a hard landscape rather suits the wooden timbers and therefore makes it

far more accessible, and safer, for those who need wheelchair access. And on the plus side we have no more mowing to do in that area of the garden so it’s a win-win!

Amusingly, our raised bed creation happened rather suddenly as a result of an accident. We came home one summers day to find Mother sprawled in a herb bed, with her wheelchair on its side next to her. She had somehow turned into the side of the bed from the path and toppled over and had to wait for an hour or so until we got home to find her. Being true to her earthy roots, however, she spent the time happily weeding and tending to the herbs that she could reach, albeit whilst laying on her side in a rather dry pile of soil.

So after our shock at finding her inverted in a herb bed, we got to making our raised planters. We used pressure-treated wood which should last up to about 20 years and is reasonably inexpensive to purchase. It’s worth doing your research on this as there are small chemical implications which you may wish to avoid. Alternatives are landscape blocks which come in the shape of bricks or cut stones, boulders or natural stone which look very attractive although they are expensive and difficult to haul due to their weight. You can purchase ready-made kits too, but if you have a bit of DIY skill you may be better creating your own from a cost point of view. Once you’re done creating your bed (and of course the material used may dictate the height that you can safely go), fill it up with a blend of compost and top quality soil. The more compost the better to be honest you can start making your own super easily by filtering any peelings, egg shells, tea bags and the like out of your normal waste and piling it up in a container outside. If your normal garden soil is poor, it’s worth spending time to make sure that your planter is high enough so that any plant roots don’t get as far as the original ground, otherwise make your first job turning compost into the area before you build the bed and fill it with soil.

For more information call Steve on

01793 848708 07967 341567 www.earthmovingservices.net

Don’t forget you can build these straight onto concrete too - just make sure they are about 2 foot tall to allow for root growth. And consider the width of your planter too and how many sides you’ll be accessing it from - you don’t want to make it so wide that you can’t actually reach one end. How you assemble the beds of course depends on your materials but as a rule of thumb, make sure you seat even the lowest beds at least 1-2 inches into the soil. This will secure the walls of your bed and prevent them from shifting. The taller you go, the more anchoring you will need.

Have a go at including a small raised bed to start with and see how you get on. I’m sure you’ll soon be convinced they are the way to go and you’ll quickly want to convert everything to knee-height or more! The Town Crier Magazine | APRIL 2019

The Ivy Wildlife Gard

Just over the river, and across the footbridge from Borough Parade, follow the footpath towards Charter Road and you will find something unexpected. In 2015 a few of the Ivy Estate residents obtained permission to create a wildlife garden on a piece of neglected ground that consisted of grass, weeds, brambles etc. and surrounded by trees and footpaths. In late April a garden team was formed, and the area was named . Some planks of wood destined for land-fill were obtained and raised planting beds were built. The residents helped lift turfs of grass to enable this. These raised beds were soon filled with soil and planted with an array of colourful plants. The area by these beds was a very overgrown and covered with brambles, prickly bushes etc., which were cut back to provide a sheltered area, but not so much as to affect the local wildlife. A nearby 500-year-old oak tree was being pruned and the contractors willingly gave up the resulting wood chips. These were used to make a more attractive sheltered area and one of the branches from the tree was used to make a sign for the garden. Soon bird nest boxes appeared, and hedgehog friendly areas were created along with a designated area for small reptiles and a pond was dug which is now home

The Ivy Wildlife Garden

to frogs and newts. A local loft conversion company noticed the work taking place and offered some offcuts of timber which would normally end up as landfill. From these offcuts a picnic style table was made + a half size one for children. Four bird tables were made, and several bird feed hangers arrived. An increase of bird life has been noticed including a very friendly robins, some tits and blackbirds, to name a few. A tally has been kept of the birds and to date 32 different species have been seen on a regular basis. Wildlife cameras, with night vision capabilities have recorded the garden being visited by badgers, foxes and hedgehogs. This project is growing beyond anything envisaged in 2015, but it is amazing what can be achieved when a small number of enthusiastic people give of their time and energy. More is planned and the garden is becoming a focus of interest to the whole estate. The garden has become a place just to sit and pause for a short while either in the sun or the more sheltered areas. The children love the small animal ornaments dotted around. The garden recently raised funds to enable a large shed to be bought, which is now on

site. Some baths were rescued, and these are used as raised planters for a variety of fruit & vegetables. There are also areas given over to growing a variety of salad products and other vegetables, which are given freely to whoever asks for them. The garden has grown into something imagined in 2015. There are now three picnic tables and wood chip paths allow access to all areas. Events are held, for the children, including Christmas, which Santa always attends, and Halloween, all free of charge. Photos of these and of how the garden has evolved since its inception. It’s well worth a visit. The garden has been given several awards; Chippenham Town Council Community Award, Chippenham Civic Society Community Award, RHS Southwest in Bloom Thriving Award. Wessex Water Community Award and has featured on BBC radio Wiltshire and their web site. The garden has been “Created for Residents by Residents and is run entirely by the community and is self- funded. We are always looking for donations both in plants and wild bird food as well as monetary donations. So, if you find yourself in the area why not pay us a visit or even find us on Facebook. NISSAN QASHQAI 1.3 DIG-T

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring journalist

The Nissan Qashqai

has been around for 11 years, and it is still a hugely popular model, ranking as Britain’s fourth most popular new motor. Only Volkswagen’s Golf, Vauxhall’s Corsa and Ford’s Fiesta fly out of dealerships more quickly. Back in 2007, consumers fell in love with the oddly named Qashqai’s blend of room, SUV styling and affordability. Since then, the Japanese automaker has kept the Qashqai name rocking – and the present incarnation of the car has been rolling off production lines since 2013. Nissan has not been resting on its laurels, though. It has been fine-tuning the Qashqai recipe over the years – and the latest tweaks aim to make it easier-onthe-pocket to run, and better than ever to drive. Fresh to the Qashqai is a new infotainment unit, but the major news comes under the hood. The previous 1.6litre and 1.2-litre petrol turbos have been kicked to the kerb with a 1.3 becoming the new

kid in town. The new petrol turbo powerplant comes with a couple of outputs – 140ps and 160ps - and is the engine currently housed in Mercedes-Benz’s A200. The unit is also more efficient with an exhaust particulate filter helping it make the grade in the latest emissions testing processes. As mentioned, Nissan claims the 1.3 petrol turbo is cheaper to run too, as service intervals have leapt to 18,000 miles. They used to be 12,500 miles, so this is a significant increase.

The car is equipped with a sixspeed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch auto ‘box, as tested. It’s worth noting, though, that the automatic is only offered with the 160ps unit. Behind the wheel, this new Qashqai variant feels smooth and quick enough, but it won't set your heart racing. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.9 seconds, and the top speed is 124mph. While the steering is light and precise, it’s not the best handling motor in its class.

The cabin is the same as ever, and the infotainment unit looks identical. However, the software is brand new, resulting in fast loading times, and the screen responds far more quickly when you touch it. It will now identify swiping and pinching motions, and the home page can be personalised with apps and shortcuts. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come factoryfitted as standard on all bar the entry-level model. The infotainment system on the Qashqai Tekna+ 1.3 DiG-T DCT we drove is still not unflawed though. The display is too dim, and you can't see much when the sun is on it because the seven -inch matt surface gives off a lot of glare. Mind you; it's much better than the former system. Nissan forecasts segmentleading residuals for the

modern Qashqai, with many versions holding over 50 per cent of their value over three years. This means that finance deals are very reasonable right now. There are many reasons why the Qashqai’s popularity is so enduring. It is comfortable to drive and, with enough room for four

or five adults, and a decent sized boot, it is a practical family car. The new infotainment system and petrol engines only strengthen the Qashqai’s name further, validating Nissan’s flexibility in the constantly-fluctuating automotive arena.

Good READ By Willow Coby

One Day by David Nicholls Ah, the hazy days of university. When we are young, with the responsibilities of a family far in the distance, full of potential, with the world at our feet. How many of us sat around with our friends and thought about what our lives would be like when we were 40. Would we be happy? Would we be married with children? Would we even still be friends? Dexter and Emma are both studying at Edinburgh University and on following their graduation they spend the night together. Both have dreams and plans and they wonder what their lives will be like in the future. This night marks the beginning of their friendship. A friendship that is revisited in the book every 15th July for 20 years. This is an interesting format for a novel: one chapter for each day. We see nothing of what happens in the intervening 364 days and are left to deduce what happened from the text. Will their lives turn out as they hoped – will Emma improve the world as she wanted to on that first 15th July? Life, it is clear, never quite turns out as we planned. As joy and tragedy play out for the reader, we are reminded that events have a habit of not asking us for permission first and taking us down a different path.

Heidi by Johanna Spyri There are some books that remain forever imprinted on our memories and often those strongest memories are the ones of the books we read as children. We may not remember the details but there is something special about sitting, curled up as a child, and allowing ourselves to be transported to another world, away from homework, parents, and annoying siblings. One such novel is Heidi. Few who have read it can forget young Heidi being dragged up the hill by Aunt Dete to be left with her grandfather in a small house near the village of Dorfli. Or the moment that her hard-hearted grandfather gives little Heidi his own bed, showing a small level of affection for his orphaned granddaughter. How many of us will have longed to run freely across the Swiss Alps with Peter and his herd of goats? And of course, there is that magical moment when the fresh mountain air helps the sickly Clara to walk again. Sometimes lost among more modern 21st century books, perhaps now is the time to introduce this loveable young heroine to your children?

s I write this article it is nearly the start of Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days (excluding Sundays) which comes before Easter. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, it’s a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. It’s one of the most important times of year for many followers of Jesus around the world. While Advent (which comes before Christmas) is a time of great anticipation, Lent is more often seen as a time of solemn observance and preparation for the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus at Easter. From its start on Ash Wednesday until its conclusion on Easter Sunday,Lent has been a traditional time for fasting or giving something up. A time of self-denial. Just as we might carefully prepare for a wedding, or a birthday; Lent invites us to prepare our hearts and minds to remember Jesus’ life, death and his rising from the dead. Today, followers of Jesus around the world observe Lent in many different ways. Some will still observe the fast very strictly, beginning with the wearing of ashes on Ash Wednesday and the abstinence of meat, fish and eggs until Easter Sunday. Some others choose to give up just one item for Lent. It’s most commonly a ‘luxury’ such as chocolate or alcohol. More recently people have chosen to give up other things in order to refocus their faith during this time; such as watching television, going to the gym, or social media. In my church this year, rather than give things up for Lent, we

are being encouraged to take things up. One of those things is just simply to spend the whole of Lent blessing people. Carrying out acts of generosity as a way of putting others first during our preparations for Easter. It could be as simple as a small act of kindness or an encouragement for someone, a card or a gift. The blessing could be great or small. One lady in my church recently gave me a card to give to someone she didn’t know, but I did. There was no name on the envelope and when I gave it to the person concerned they opened it and as they pulled out the card tears rolled down their face. Inside was a gift and the words ‘With love’. The card now sits in a frame on the coffee table as a reminder of the kindness shown. I wonder whether you might like to join us in a time of blessing people. They may be people you know well or they may be people you don’t know at all. A friend of mine was out recently for a meal in a restaurant with his wife and two children. When it came to pay the bill the waiter said there was no need because it had already been paid by the couple who had sat on a table adjacent to them. They didn’t know the couple at all. It reminds me of Good Friday and Easter. A time when we remember and celebrate the price that Jesus paid for us. He died for us so that we might have a restored relationship with God. We are forgiven for all the wrong in our past. We are deeply blessed by God’s love, and God longs for us to love by blessing others too. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net)
