Welcome to our May edition. Leaving behind the cold winds of April we look towards the warmer weather of May and its two bank holidays. The Lilac trees are blooming with their lovely hanging tressels of flowers, filling the air with their gorgeous scent. So I just couldn't resist the picture of the sweet kitten sitting amongst the lilac for our front cover this month! Where do we start? There's so much going on this month. Chippenham in particular are really busy with their Soapbox Derby and The Folk Festival – great for a day out. If your musically minded, Minety Music Festival is coming up in July so you will need to secure your tickets now. Check out the Diary Date pages for more events. The Kings Arms in Castle Street, Trowbridge will be hosting a Quiz night on Sunday 19th May in aid of Mayor Dennis Drewett's chosen charities. Check out the website for more details; www.trowbridge.gov.uk/events/ quiz-night-for-mayors-charities/ If your looking to go further afield, why not hire an electric bike and pedal the countryside! We have two lovely advertisers who can help organise the bikes and a day out for you. Or take a walk amongst the woods of Bowood and see the beautiful display of rhododendrons. Of course, don't forget Calne duck to home, gain race! Closer inspiration for decorating ideas in our home interiors feature or if your green fingered get out in the garden, we show you how to use containers for beautiful displays. As usual we have some scrumptious recipes and our Table Talk this month is The Wiltshire Yeoman in Trowbridge.

MALMESBURY LEAGUE OF FRIENDS BUYS 14 LAPTOPS FOR JULIA’S HOUSE

RADIO CLUB

BROADCASTS A COMMITMENT

TO THE FUTURE!

Malmesbury League of Friends (MLOF) has purchased 14 new laptop computers, at a cost of £7,500, for use by nurses at Devizes-based charity Julia’s House. The new laptops will enable the nurses’ IT equipment to be upgraded, providing improved access to its patient database, wherever they are working. This will allow the nurses to access each child’s bespoke care plan and to update notes immediately.

Chippenham Amateur Radio club in the new headquarters at Kington Langley Village Hall has a strong and dedicated training team and continues to offer full training and support for any potential new members wishing to explore the world of Amateur Radio. There are three nationally recognised RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain) courses available to people of all learning abilities. Once licensed it will allow the operator with their own dedicated International approved callsign to contact people all over the world by radio.

Julia’s House has been caring for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions in Dorset for 15 years and, in 2017, helped by a donation of £25,000 from MLOF, it opened its second hospice in Devizes. Mark Edwards, Julia’s House Chief Executive, said: “ We are enormously grateful for this second donation from MLOF. By increasing our efficiency, reducing administration and working smarter, our wonderful nurses will be able to devote even more time to the children and their families who so desperately need our care.” David Hide, MLOF Chairman, said: “ We are delighted to provide further funds for this amazing charity, which currently supports more than 30 families in Wiltshire with expert care, including two local Malmesbury families.” 4

Bank Holiday

BonanZA By Sarah Davey

It's that time of year when we've just had Easter Monday, and now we have two bank holidays in May. Us Brits certainly like to celebrate the arrival of spring. But as a nation we're a funny old bunch (and that's without mentioning Brexit!) and we tend to panic at all this extra time off. What on earth will we do with it?

So here iS my BritS' guide to Bank Holidays... We ask

everyone else what they're doing, kind of like Christmas! As a nation we get excited about the prospect of a longer than usual weekend. We make vague plans about weekends away. According to my immediate circle of friends The Cotswolds are all 'lovely at this time of year...' But we will always leave it too late, or

won't agree on a destination, or discover every hotel has suddenly doubled its prices, so we never actually go. At least one friend will remind you in bitter tones that they will be working while you are relaxing. Sympathise with them, and maybe buy them a bottle of wine. Without these people the country would grind to a halt.

We check the weather forecast repeatedly and rejoice equally in headlines which read IT'S GOING TO BE A SCORCHER or IT'S GOING TO BE A WASHOUT...because Brits love weather‌all weather!

We buy paint in anticipation of giving a room a facelift. Bank holidays were absolutely designed for repainting the sitting room! We buy bedding out plants, compost and 'garden features', because Bank holidays were absolutely designed for prettying our little plot of land. We tentatively suggest a barbecue to family and friends because as well as being obsessed by weather we are also eternal optimists about it. And if it rains, we still barbecue because that's what you do on a bank holiday in May, and well...it gives the guests something to talk about while they sip their beer, 'Looks like it might brighten up later...' as the hail slams into the awning. We plan a film night. When we finally face the reality that there isn't going to be a heatwave, and the weather is more barmy than balmy we hit Netflix or Sky Movies and dial a pizza with extra pepperoni and a large garlic bread. Because Bank holidays and carbs were made for each other. Finally, we have the Sunday blues on a Monday night. Bank holidays are gone in the blink of an eye and all too soon it's back to work. But cheer up, it's only four days until the weekend again!

Music lovers will be well served with nearly 60 acts on this year’s line-up and the addition of an acoustic stage. With so much local music talent, bands from all across Wilshire and surrounding areas will play alongside headline acts including the mighty Toploader and the iconic Republica as well as Abba versus Elvis Friday night mayhem (fancy dress warmly encouraged) and the popular silent disco! One of the key things that makes Minety special is the atmosphere, which is helped by knowledge that all the profits from the festival are distributed between local charities Wiltshire Air ambulance, Naomi House Hospice and Jacksplace and supporting local causes – Minety Primary School and Minety Pre School. The bar is always well stocked with local beers and ciders, and for the more refined palate, there is a Cocktail Tiki Bar and a Gin and Prosecco waggon! There is also top quality coffee for the morning after the night before! Onsite camping is FREE too, so you can really get into the festival spirit. There is a breakfast bar and on site shop too if the coffee isn’t going to cut it! To go further afield, try Salisbury, with its fine cathedral and its close. Cycle via an old drover’s road up to remote Normanton Down: Stonehenge reveals itself dramatically. Cyclists in the know, though, prefer the village of Avebury, whose ancient stone circle is more accessible and more fun to visit. The Wylye Valley route from Salisbury to Bath (NCN24) passes through typically fabulous valley scenery; the circular 160-mile Wiltshire Cycleway showcases the county, right up to historic Malmesbury in the Cotswolds.

Cycling in Wiltshire’s peaceful, timeless countryside will show you rural England at its very best. The Wiltshire cycleway threads its way through Wiltshire along quiet country lanes and passes many of the country’s most attractive places to visit - Stonehenge, White Horses, Britain’s best towpath rides, mystic ancient barrows and crop circles – and Swindon: Wiltshire has an unmatched range of must-sees to explore by bike, all set among quite beautiful chalk hills, valleys and country lanes.

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2019

Another good mountain bike day or two out is to take an OS map visit all eight Wiltshire White Horses, huge chalk figures cut into the hills in the hills rolling northeast from Westbury (home of the grandest). Exploring the mystic ancient burial barrows and speculative crop-circle country round here makes a great road or off-road tour.

HOME FOCUS The devil’s in the detail Sometimes it’s just the smallest of details that can really make or break the design of a home. Whether it’s the crispness of the paintwork, fastidious cleaning so that mirrors shine and skirting boards are dusted, there are quite a few things you can do to achieve a quality finish in your home that doesn’t cost the earth. 1.

Less is more

Take a look at how many decorative items you have out on display and consider whether they could be organised differently, or reduced. Rather than having lots of cherished items on the side, pick only two or three and let the space around them highlight their importance. Think of this a little bit like a beautiful plant in the garden - if it was crowded out by bushes and trees you up the photos will look so much better and wouldn’t see it properly to enjoy it. Co-ordinate your colours

Try and avoid too many colours in your room (unless you are purposely going for a bright and rainbow feel). Stick to a palette of two or three colours at the most and you can more easily co-ordinate your soft furnishings and accessories around your more expensive items such as your carpet or sofa. By only using a couple of colours, or tones of one colour, you’ll encourage a feeling of seamlessness across the space and indeed if you follow this through around the house it’ll create a style that’s cohesive and calm.

Chippenham Soap Box Derby Chippenham Connected in partnership with Chippenham Town Council are thrilled to announce the third annual Chippenham Soap Box Derby, taking place on Sunday 19th May and are calling for hopeful racers to take their place on the starting line. Chippenham Soap Box Derby has quickly become a favourite annual event in the town since its first appearance in 2017, both with community and school groups, and also local businesses taking part. Nicki Milne, 2019 title sponsor from Eagle One, owners of Emery Gate Shopping Centre said, “We are proud to be supporting this year’s crowd-drawing Soap Box Derby. It’s fantastic to see so many local businesses enter their creations and take part in the race.” The event includes 50 races in handmade, nonpower assisted karts along Chippenham’s High Street, overseen by the infamous Super Mario. Groups of all ages and abilities are invited to take part, because as Mario himself says: it’s not F1, it’s just for fun! Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham Connected said, “As soon as the event was over last year, we were receiving messages and emails from people wanting to take part in 2019! This is a hugely popular event and it’s wonderful to see the town brimming with people on a Sunday. Both businesses and community groups took part last year, and we’re excited to see what Chippenham has to offer this time round!” Councillor Sandie Webb, Leader of Chippenham Town Council said, “We are pleased to see the return of the popular Soap Box Derby that last year so impressed with the imagination, effort and enthusiasm that was put in. Many of the vehicles were worthy of a medal just for their originality and so we can’t wait to see what the teams make this year.” Six shining trophies are up for grabs again this year, and there’s all to play for. The judges will be looking not only for speed but also for ingenuity and creativity. There are prizes for youth and adult karts, as well as the best business kart. This year’s Soap Box Derby will take place on Sunday 19th May from 12-4pm on the High Street. All the races are now full, but be sure to head along to witness the fun yourself on 19th May! www.chippenhamconnected.com/whats-on/ chippenham-soap-box-derby.aspx

What does the ‘Personal Tax Allowance’ mean? Every person who is resident in the UK is given a personal allowance each tax year by HMRC. It operates as follows: The personal allowance is the amount of income you can receive before paying tax – and it generally increases each tax year. For the 2018/19 tax year, it is £11,850. So, if you earn £20,000 in 2018/19, you will be subject to income tax on £8,150 of your earnings. The personal allowance is reduced when your income exceeds £100,000 in a tax year (by £1 for every £2 your income exceeds £100,000) – so that when your income reaches £123,700 (in 2018/19), you will no longer receive a personal allowance. Starlettes reunited at Chippenham Museum talk

Bottom l-r: Sharon Wedlake nee Kilmartin, Janice Thorne nee Kilmartin, Pauline Iason nee Cole)

Former members of the Chippenham Starlettes were reunited with its founder, Betty Hooper, when they came to hear her talk at Chippenham Museum on Friday 29 March. As part of Chippenham Museum’s Objects in Focus series of free talks, Betty spoke about a portrait of herself and her husband Bill, on show in the museum, and told of its presentation to her on the night of the last Starlettes show in November 1979. Betty went on to share tales of her time running the Starlettes and spoke with affection of the group’s very successful 25 years. Museum Assistant Elaine Davis said “This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Starlettes’ last performance so it was wonderful to have Betty take part in our series of talks and have former members join us in the museum. We would like to celebrate the anniversary further and want to hear from anyone who has memories of the group or memorabilia which we could use in a display.” 36

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2019

The Chippenham Starlettes were formed in 1953 by Betty and Bill Hooper as a dancing school for children. The group held their first performance, ‘Dick Whittington’, at the Neeld in 1954 and continued to stage popular performances both in Chippenham and at the Theatre Royal in Bath. ‘Starlettes Remembered’, a book of memories and photographs charting the success of the group, is available from Chippenham Museum’s shop (£6.95).

Elaine continues “We started the Objects in Focus lunchtime talks programme to run alongside our current exhibition which explores what we do behind the scenes to look after the museum’s collection. However the talks have been so well received that we have decided to add a few further dates later in the year, with a talk planned in May to focus on objects related to Chippenham Folk Festival.” Chippenham Museum, a Chippenham Town Council facility, is free to visit and tells the story of the people and history of Chippenham and surrounding villages from prehistoric times up until the present day with a varied programme of exhibitions and events. The museum is open 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday, including Bank Holidays.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

A perfect family, living in a perfect house, in a perfect little American town called Shaker Heights. The Richardsons, led by matriarch Elena are pillars of their community. A community where everything is carefully planned, from the road layout to the colour of the houses, and everyone knows their role in life. Elena has one simple guiding principle: you play by the rules. As this intriguing novel begins there is a fire at the Richardson’s house. The three older children, all in high school, are discussing the cause. Their conclusion is unanimous; their younger sister Izzy is The Prisoner by Penny McKinlay Nearly two decades into the 21st century the days of the Second World War seem as remote as ancient history. For the younger generation today, with their phones, TV on demand, and Netflix, even the experiences of their own parents as children seem distant from today. This is why books like The Prisoner are so welcome. One of a series of ‘Historical Adventures’ this exciting story gives an insight into what life was really like during World War Two. Ten-year-old Bob and his friend Jack have had enough of the war. It has been going on for five years. Five years of rationing (Bob doesn’t know how much more cabbage he can face) and more importantly five years of no sweets. His Dad has been gone for a long time – a prisoner of war on the continent. Blackout blinds and ‘digging for victory’ are such a part of life that Bob cannot remember a time without them.

responsible. We then flashback to a year before and we are introduced to Mia Warren and her teenage daughter Pearl. Mia is a photographer from San Francisco; she and Pearl live an almost nomadic lifestyle. But when they rent a home from the Richardsons their plan is to settle down. But plans can change. As the stories unfold these two families are drawn together by the teenagers, and tensions arise when friends of the Richardsons try to adopt a ChineseAmerican baby. Elena and Mia find themselves on opposite sides of a divided community in a conflict that will have far-reaching effects for both families. This is an engrossing novel which will have you questioning the secrets you hold in your own lives, wondering if there are indeed times when it would be so much better if we just burn everything down and start again.

Naturally Bob is scared – this is the enemy. But as he gets to know him his feelings change. Bob starts to feel sorry for him and wants him to stay with them rather than in the prison camp. But ultimately the prisoner is an enemy. Can he really be trusted, or does he have another reason for seeming so nice? Designed to complement the Key Stage 2 History curriculum, this short novel combines facts and suspense in a story to keep every young reader on the edge of their seats.

But one day Bob and Jack meet an Italian prisoner of war working in a nearby field.

The Wiltshire Yeoman

The Wiltshire Yeoman is a Butcombe owned Brewery pub, situated in Chilmark Road on the Broadmead estate in Trowbridge.

It’s recently undergone a huge redecoration from the new landlady Heidi Loh and her father, landlord, Gerald Loh. Darcie, Heidi's 10 year old daughter who is unfortunately deaf, also lives at the pub, where they all moved in just over 9 months ago. Not of course forgetting, the family pet dog, Bruno. The pub, of course, is very dog friendly and you will find a 'doggie photo gallery' a special 'doggie' garden with dog treats and plenty of water available. Being family orientated, The Wiltshire

44

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2019

Yeoman has outside space with a patio area and a large garden which is very popular on lovely summer days. With board games and beer mat games available, with a play area, there is something for everyone. Ample parking, is available, where also Camper Vans are welcome to stay the night so they may enjoy all that is on offer. A traditional country pub, the building was originally a farmhouse dating back to the 18th Century and it still maintains that heritage charm – priding itself on logburning fires to keep guests warm in the winter.

A recent review from a guest who booked for Mother’s Day said: “Had a fabulous Mother’s Day lunch today, had an extra grandson we didn’t book for, when I asked if we could make an extra

place on the table it was done with no problem. Service and food were excellent, such a lovely experience for us. All staff so friendly and helpful, even to the extent of taking family photo for us, 10 out of 10 highly recommended by all the family.”

Apart from being busy on special occasions like Mother’s Day and Easter, the pub maintains some traditional pub events with a ladies’ and gents’ darts teams and also a weekly Sunday night quiz – from 8 pm to 10.30 pm, where it's only a £1 a person to play. They also hold other events to support and encourage the community to come along – registration for these events is encouraged (see website below). This spring and summer that includes: *Saturday 4th May from 4 pm - live music from The Hammervilles.

As for the food on offer it is a good pub staple fare with starters from soup to garlic mushrooms, main courses - traditional fish & chips, 'proper' short crust pastry pies and homemade favourites like shepherd's pie , venison stew and not forgetting the 'Yeoburger'! Along with a children's menu, there are many gluten free options, such as BBQ chicken, chips & peas, and plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, such as their Mediterranean tart. As well as Butcombe beer, we offer a range of craft ales.

Wakes & family events can all be catered for with finger buffets starting at £6.50 per head. The bar opening times are as follows: Monday 4 pm to 11 pm /Tuesday to Saturday 12 pm to 11 pm / Sunday 12 pm to 10.30 pm. NAT IONAL VEGETARIAN WEEK! May 13th – maY 19th More of us are turning to vegetarianism thanks to an abundance of scientific research that demonstrates both the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based diet. An estimated 70 percent of all diseases, including one-third of all cancers, are related to diet. A vegetarian diet reduces the risk for chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain types of cancer including colon, breast, prostate, stomach, lung and oesophageal cancer. A vegetarian diet tends to increase bone strength. When there isn't enough calcium in the bloodstream, our bodies leach it from existing bone. This results in our skeletons gradually becoming porous and losing strength. Although you can take supplements, it's better to obtain calcium from your diet because food also supplies other nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D, that are necessary for the body to be able to absorb and make use of calcium.

A vegetarian diet is more environmentally friendly. Much of the grain we grow is fed to animals raised for slaughter. As a rough guide it takes 2,500 gallons of water, 5.5Kg / 12lbs of grain, nearly 16Kg /35lbs of topsoil and the energy equivalent of 4.5L /1 gallon of petrol, to produce one pound of beef! A vegetarian diet can sustain many more people, so is a more efficient use of resources. Finally, a vegetarian diet is cheaper. Eating vegetables, grains and fruits in place of beef, chicken and fish would cut individual food bills by an average of £500 per year. If you are thinking about becoming vegetarian, or even just incorporating more vegetarian meals into your normal diet, there is lots of information and some great recipes on the website www.nationalvegetarianweek.org

exercise. In the over-65’s this drops to 17% of men and 12% of women, and in Scotland the figures are even less! The trainers at your Gym will discuss the best way to get you back into shape. If you haven’t exercised before or for a long while they will advise that you start slowly and build up gradually.

Good instructors

And Beyond...

Attention over-fifties! When was the last time you visited a gym? You kind of know you should be making an effort, right? But do excuses such as ‘too expensive’; ‘lack of time’, and ‘no motivation’, sound familiar? Or maybe like me you have a pathological fear of lycra? But assuming you have no major health problems we can tackle this issue in bite-size chunks. As an over-fifty myself (quite a lot over if I’m honest) I overcame my own gym-phobia and have been reaping the rewards since.

Motivation

This is the key. You need a specific goal. I wanted to achieve a healthier lifestyle with improved cardiovascular fitness.

Time

Look in your diary and you will find a spare hour at least once, or better still, two or three times a week.

Cost

Can be as expensive or affordable as you want. A ladies-only gym with a personal trainer can be expensive, but a mixed gym membership in off-peak

hours brings the cost down considerably and you can still get instruction and advice from an on-site trainer. Most gyms now take membership fees on a monthly direct debit basis.

are enthusiastic and well-trained and will arrange a set of exercises to suit to you. Before you know it, you’ll have a routine e.g. 5 minutes bike, 5 minutes treadmill, 5 minutes weights. It will only take a few sessions before you improve and begin to compete with yourself. You’ll notice the benefits of improved posture; glowing skin; improved breathing, zest and vitality almost immediately. We are all living longer but perhaps we should also be aiming to live more healthily too.

Clothing

Lycra isn’t compulsory, but clothes must be comfortable, and this includes your undergarments. Remember, it’s not a fashion parade and chafed tender bits will put you off exercise forever! If you’re feeling hesitant repeat to yourself, “I can do this; I want a healthier and fitter me; I have the time to do this”. This is your Mantra. Say it often enough and you will start to believe it. Don’t be put off by glum folk who say it’s all a waste of time. Mix with positive people who will encourage you and improve your self-esteem.

Metabolism

This slows down as you get older and this can lead to weight gain, but exercise helps keep weight on an even keel because you build lean muscle. You also improve your immune system and cardiovascular system; reduce bad cholesterol and boost brainpower. Research shows that only 32% of men and 21% of women aged over 50 in England undertake some form of regular

Our Family honoring your family Compassionate funeral services At Odette Funeral Director, we understand that organising a funeral can be a daunting task especially when we have to make difficult decisions at a time of loss and bereavement. We are there to guide you through every step of the way and we take great pride in being able to offer a 24 hour service, 365 days a year, providing advice on what needs to be done and by whom. We can discuss your requirements in the comfort of your own home or at our office. Although we are based in Calne, we extend our services across Wiltshire.

You’re in safe hands Odette first started out in funeral service working for another well known funeral director, however after that was sold to a big corporate in 2014, Odette decided to venture out on her own, to offer a personal, respectful service to Calne and the surrounding community.

Odette has a wealth of experience and knowledge having been in funeral service for over 20 years. She passed the Diploma in Funeral Directing in 2007. Odette has also previously worked as a Pathology Technician and so has a great understanding of the Coroner system. Her daughter Sara is a Funeral Arranger and deals with all administration. Sara has been in the family business since 2016 and she has two children. Odette ‘s son Tom started in the family business once he left school in 2017 and helps with administration and with all other aspects of organizing a funeral. Tom is looking forward to the future and is starting his training to be a Funeral Conductor. Odette and her family live in Calne and are involved and support the local community in various ways.

We need an efficient heart and lungs to go walking and cycling, mow the lawn, clean the house, play with the grandchildren ‌ A healthy heart will reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Other health benefits of regular activity include improved mood and confidence, reduced anxiety and depression and increased social interaction; better sleep and more, not less, energy!

How can we do this? LIFT exercise and activities can be easily accompanied and enjoyed by anyone, including individuals with limited mobility, reduced range of movement and balance problems because they can all be done seated in a chair whilst those who can, will be encouraged to stand during the session where possible. The overall aim of the session is to gently progress to moderate intensity exercise and then return slowly and relax. This means every session commences with a warm-up to help mobilise joints, warm muscles and raise the pulse a little. This then takes you into the main activity period which can include cardio exercise, stretches and strength

This is followed by cooling down, remobilising the joints slowly, gently stretch the muscles and to relax, and can be achieved using moves derived from Tai Chi. There is then time for a chat over a cuppa and biscuit! Don’t worry if there is a wide range of ability in the group, you will be helped to exercise at a level that is right for you. Want to live longer and independently in your own home? In our lifetime, we take around 250,000 journeys up and down stairs. So it’s no wonder that over time, we may find ourselves needing a bit of help on the stairs. Stairlifts are a popular choice to easily overcome this problem. Having one installed, means that people can remain in the home they love and use the stairs safely. A recent independent study has also found, that having things like a stairlift fitted, can delay going into a care home by 4 to 7 years.

Local Calne firm 1st Choice Stairlifts have transformed over 4,500 people’s lives with a stairlift, and see what a difference having one can make. “I wish I had it sooner” is something they often hear, from people who have unnecessarily struggled for years, when the problem could easily and quickly have been resolved with one phone call.

and as all lifts fix to the steps not the wall, there’s no mess. Stairlifts can be fitted whatever your stair type on stairs that are straight, curved, spiral, narrow, even multi-flight townhouses.

Don’t struggle transform your life today!

That’s all it takes to get a surveyor to do a stairlift assessment and recommend the best lift for the job. Installation only takes a couple of hassle free hours

Your Trusted Stairlift Experts Are you or is someone you know struggling on the stairs at home?

Just imagine in just a few short hours, we can make stairs a much safer place by installing a lift. Having a lift fitted can make stairclimbing quick and pain free and can really make a big difference to your independence and quality of life, keeping you comfortable and safe in the home you love.

E-motional Social bike rides for electric bike riders!

Nicki Milne, 2019 title sponsor from Eagle One, owners of Emery Gate Shopping Centre said, “We are proud to be supporting this year’s crowd-drawing Soap Box Derby. It’s fantastic to see so many local businesses enter their creations and take part in the race.”

Here at e-motion we have been advocates for electric bikes since 2009 and stock 8 of the very best brands, which will enable you to contrast and compare, and more importantly ask questions to our knowledgeable staff who have a wealth of experience. They will match you to a bike that will not only fit you perfectly, look great, but do what you need it to do and lastly not decimate the bank balance! DIY conversion ekits start from £375 and new ebikes from £700, we also buy, sell and repair secondhand electric bikes.

The event includes 50 races in handmade, nonpower assisted karts along Chippenham’s High Street, overseen by the infamous Super Mario. Groups of all ages and abilities are invited to take part, because as Mario himself says: it’s not F1, it’s just for fun!

So if you fancy a go on an electric bike we’ll loan you one for a test ride or if you want to go further join us for 2 to 3 hours on a Sunday morning. Our E-motional Social rides happen on the 1st Sunday of each month and take in a new route each time. To book a place or for more details please call me. Happy cycling . . .

Kathryn Crosweller of Chippenham Connected said, “As soon as the event was over last year, we were receiving messages and emails from people wanting to take part in 2019! This is a hugely popular event and it’s wonderful to see the town brimming with people on a Sunday. Both businesses and community groups took part last year, and we’re excited to see what Chippenham has to offer this time round!”

Mark Butler, Director E-motion EVC 01793 251200

Councillor Sandie Webb, Leader of Chippenham Town Council said, “We are pleased to see the return of the popular Soap Box Derby that last year so impressed with the imagination, effort and enthusiasm that was put in. Choosethe Perfect Sunglasses

By Sarah Davey It's that time of year when we traditionally invest in a new pair of sunglasses for the summer. There's so much choice though! How do you whittle it down to the perfect pair? First choose the right colour frame. Warm browns and tortoiseshell suits warmer colouring. Cool greys, blues and blacks suit cool skin colouring or grey hair. Next pick a pair that flatters your features. There are no hard and fast rules. Look at what your face lacks and use the sunglasses to even out your proportions. Rounder faces often lack definition and benefit from a sunspec with strong lines. Long thin faces might need a softer, rounder style with an upswept edge. Try on as many as you can. Take selfies and compare. Add length to a short nose with a high bridge or shorten an overly long nose with a low (butterfly shape) bridge. A strong jaw can be balanced with a heavier top bar. Sunspecs are all about protecting your eyes from UV so make sure that any pair you buy has a CE kite mark, and that sunglasses are marked UV400. Cheap sunspecs not bearing these marks will probably not provide adequate protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Choose larger frames for protection but bear in mind that deeper the frame the shorter your face will look, so if you have a long face shape, go ahead and choose a deep frame. A shorter face needs a frame that's less deep, while still providing enough coverage for UV protection. Take your eyebrows into account! If your brows stick out of the top of the frame at an odd angle, you'll look permanently surprised, or angry! Choose your sunnies wisely and you'll be able to add instant glamour to any outfit.

Taking a closer look at . . .

Life Coaching by byClaire ClaireKnight Knight

Increasingly, I work with teenagers and children who may have experienced issues like bullying or low selfconfidence. Issues around anger, grief and self-image can crop up too. During a session with a child, we may use toys to help them express themselves and process their emotions. We may also discuss favourite movies or books as metaphors to help them gain perspectives and insights. Using simple props, I explain the key parts of the brain and their reactions, for example, the amygdala is the part of the brain that is on 'high alert' when we are anxious. The use of creative exercises helps children and teens find strategies to feel stronger, more confident and in control.

What is life coaching?

Life coaching is a service that helps you create positive change in your life. It helps you to move beyond your limitations. It empowers you to manage your life in the best possible ways for you as an individual and it recognises that we are all different and unique. One of its key benefits is that it provides practical techniques and strategies to help you rise to challenges, both now and in the future. In a nutshell, coaching helps you to be the best possible version of you in the face of whatever life throws up at you.

Who uses the services of a life coach?

Clients are everyday people who purposefully choose to focus on changing something about their lives; this can be their external world or how they are experiencing the world internally. Some may be facing difficult situations like redundancy or divorce and want to feel better equipped to deal with these circumstances; perhaps they want to feel more positive or clearer about how they move forward. Others want to work on feelings like low confidence or anxiety; both can seem overwhelming and paralysing. Some clients wish to change career or enhance their performance at work. I also encounter clients who just feel ‘stuck’ in their lives and need some help working out what needs to change and where to start.

Why is life coaching so effective?

Life coaching is so effective because it is totally focused on you and the outcomes you want to achieve. It involves the use of tried and tested practical techniques, first developed in the seventies and refined and enhanced since that time to optimise their effectiveness. These techniques help us access the subconscious, so that we can get to the root of your thoughts and feelings. Coaching also involves specific skills such as deep listening, acuity (reading facial expressions and body language), detecting negative language patterns and skilful questioning. A good coach works as your ally, confidante, supporter, empathiser, challenger and progress monitor! At the heart of coaching lies a compassionate yet objective, professional relationship. >>>

Why do you coach?

I visited a life coach myself a couple of times in my life and found it so empowering that I wanted to learn more about it. I previously had a corporate career which had its rewards however everything clicked into place when I started my life coaching training. I knew I had

found the right career for me; I am a ‘people person’ who has always wanted to work in a caring profession. The sense of fulfilment I experience when coaching is huge. Facilitating others’ growth and development and seeing them become happier, more resourceful and positive is a wonderful privilege. Coaching is definitely my passion!

Hydrate Cleanse & Moisturise Dry brushing is my first step to DIY summer ready skin. The simple act of brushing your skin with a natural bristle body brush for just a few minutes per day has benefits that go way beyond the surface. These benefits actually encompass the whole body from external physical benefits to internal physical benefits. Exfoliating once or twice a week is recommended for most skin types It helps to keep pores clear and stimulates collagen production while improving the glow of your skin. After exfoliating it’s time to re-hydrate your skin. A simple shower will do.

WONDERFUL WOO WO In time for Easter and a week early,

The Woodland Garden at Wiltshire’s BOWOOD

Warmer weather than usual, in the run-up to the 2019 season at Bowood’s Woodland Garden, means it will now re-open a week ahead earlier than originally anticipated. With the annual six-week season now set to start on Friday 19th April, members of the public can look to the Woodland Garden for an Easter outing and the most picturesque of family walks.

“It was as recent as 2017 when the garden first opened for Easter,” comments Bowood’s owner, Lord Lansdowne and the driving force behind the Woodland Garden. “What looked like an exception to the rule then, with spring arriving well ahead of itself, may well become the norm.

“From the blossoms on the blackthorn in the hedgerows to cherry trees in front gardens, the landscape is coming back into colour. At Bowood, our azaleas, magnolias and rhododendrons are burgeoning with flower buds. If we escape the potential threats of hail, frost - and maybe even snow - 2019 looks set to be another magical year.” Each year the public is encouraged not to miss out

appearance of the azaleas. With the season being a short one, and now beginning sooner than expected, an Easter visit should be seized upon. Whether highly knowledgeable about horticultural or simply keen to enjoy nature’s beauty and the great outdoors, Woodland Garden visitors can not fail to be enthralled by it. Children (up to 12 years) enjoy free admission and dogs on leads are welcome too. Bowood’s spring Woodland Garden is unique to Wiltshire. Its positioning on a narrow strip of green sand, running between Poole and the Wash, is the reason behind why it flourishes as it does and is so very special. Originally laid out in 1854 by the 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne, the Woodland

OODLAND - the present 9th Marquis of Lansdowne has continued the planting pursued here by his forebears.

In 2013, Lord Lansdowne unveiled the new, additional four-acre ‘Jubilee Garden’ - a seven year labour of love. Shaped by a small natural valley with magnificent clumps of yews at each corner, this particular plot fulfills what he believes was the intention of his great-grandfather over 100 years previously. Returning to Bowood after serving as Viceroy of India from 1888-94, the 5th Marquess considerably expanded the rhododendron garden. The present Lord Lansdowne in turn took his cue from these corner markings.

The “Walk of the Week” signs lead visitors of all ages (including dogs on leads) around particular ‘hot spots’. Two miles of pathways meander through beautiful sun dappled glades and around the family Mausoleum, built by Robert Adam around 1762. One can make steady progress along these pathways – signposted with various Lansdowne family names, such as ‘Lord Shelburne’s Walk’, ‘Lady Lansdowne’s Walk’ and the ‘Fitzmaurice Walk’ – or wander more leisurely, stopping along the way to sit, relax and simply while away the time here. Allow a minimum two hours to ensure you enjoy the Woodland Garden to the full.

Springtime safety for your Pets

The warm weather can mean more parasites. Please check your pet regularly for ticks and fleas in the spring season. As pets are more likely to be outside in the spring months and our dogs will be dipping in rivers and streams infectious diseases become more of a worry. Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date. We start to see more insect bites and stings as the weather warms up. Reactions to bee stings can include mild swelling and tenderness; some pets are allergic to bee stings and will need emergency veterinary care.

Spring is an exciting time however there are a few hazards to look out for this season to keep pets safe. Spring flowers such as daffodils and bluebells can cause serious harm to your pets. They cause a wide range of symptoms including vomiting, lethargy and abnormal breathing. Bulbs are also dangerous if eaten, as the toxins are more concentrated in the bulbs. If you think your pet has swallowed a flower or a bulb, please ring us immediately.

Dogs and cats can have seasonal allergies too. Their symptoms include sneezing, scratching, licking and chewing. This can be very distressing for our pets. Please get in touch and we can discuss the best way of controlling these symptoms. Take care in your garden if you feel tempted to use pesticides or fertilisers. If ingested by your pet they can become very unwell. They are best avoided altogether but if you must use them please keep your pet well away from any areas. If you feel the need to have a big spring clean, the products you use are likely to contain harmful chemicals such as, ammonia, bleach and chlorine. Keep your pets in a separate room until all surfaces are dry.

WATERING & WELLIES

Self Contained How to use pots and planters in your garden to your advantage hether you have an W acreage or a balcony, using containers in your garden can be a hugely practical, or cosmetic step and can transform your green space in a way that (in my opinion), no other garden ‘accessory’ can.

First of all, let's take a look at the practical aspects of using containers. Drainage is the number one priority if you are planting up a container (as opposed to using it for a water feature etc) to prevent your plant roots from drowning. If your chosen pot does not come with holes, you can drill these fairly easily yourself - 3 or 4 holes should be sufficient. Next you may want to fill the base with some shingle mixed with a few bigger stones. Make sure that these are larger than the holes you have created so that they don’t drop through. There is an argument from those who are well-versed on soil science that adding crockery or other drainage material is actually, (excuse the pun), potty. Without going into it too much, it’s all to do with the way soil drains and the natural water table. Water will drain out of the holes in the bottom of your pots whether the additional stones were there or not and it would seem they make little difference to your plants. But it would be amiss of me to not include this age-old step in our container process, simply because I know my grandad would probably turn in his grave if I decided to omit it. Back to our containers. If you have a garden with questionable soil, a pot will 76

The Town Crier Magazine | MAY 2019

give you the opportunity to pick exactly the right type of compost your plant will require, allowing you to ‘mix and match’ around your garden. Without planters, you’re a bit more restricted with what you can successfully plant, and maintain. From a practical point of view, if you are limited on outside space, container gardening is perfect if you want to grow your own produce. Carrots and tomatoes will generally thrive happily in a grow bag or pot that has enough depth for the carrot to plough down, and if you have some canes or similar, tomatoes will wind their way up them and fill the air with that beautiful smell that only a tomato plant can throw off. Siting your plants is important - just because you can move a planter around doesn’t mean that the plant will be happy anywhere. Be mindful of the location required for

the chosen plant and bear in mind that most vegetables will be happiest with lots of sunshine and a bit of shelter so that they don’t get hit with cold winds. You can add a bamboo screen if you’re high up - not only with this give you and your plants some protection but it will look really stylish too. A watering regime is a must for container planting as the plants won’t be able to draw on the moisture available from the ground. In hot weather, give your plants a really thorough water early in the morning or before bed. It’s important to water more than you think to ensure there is sufficient to travel down to the roots. If you want to be a bit quicker with the watering or know you’re going away, pop in an irrigation system to do them all in one go. They are easy to get hold of now from most garden centres and not too tricky to set up.

ake sure you plan the M layout of your containers carefully so that you have good access for watering and harvesting.

I particularly like the flexibility of a container because, as I do inside my house, I like to move things around when the mood takes me. You can pretty much redesign your garden in an afternoon if you so choose. Just make sure that you use a trolley to move anything particularly heavy, or pop your pots onto wheels to trundle them around. We recently visited a café in London where they had created a complete oasis in a courtyard with stunning ferns and palm trees in giant pots that came up to our waists. The whole effect was tropical, private and yet not one plant was in the ground.

If you removed everything what you’d be left with would be a plain patio. Imagine what you could do with a small outside space and some incredible pots! Container planting is also good for those of us who want instant gratification and can’t be patient enough to wait for things to grow. You can get a tree or a bush already planted up from the garden centre. All you have to do is get it in a car and bring it home. Bear in mind that this option is going to be more expensive because you’ve allowed someone else to do the nurturing for you, but the advantage of this, particularly if you’re not very green-fingered, is that you’re likely to purchase something that is good quality and shaped well. All you have to do is get it back and continue

tending for it! A Japanese Acer is a good example of a ready-made plant that works well in a container. Expect to pay several hundred pounds for a good specimen but these will add a real focal point for any outside space, particularly one made up of an array of gorgeous pottery.

l l a W e h t Scaling - Clematis GARDEN VIEW

What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purpleflowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronzeleafed, pink-flowered montana rubens. They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes. One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upside-down terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically.

Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson. So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers. Happy gardening, Rachael Leverton

Kia e-Niro NEW 2019

gear selector has been replaced with a rotary dial. This little change in details unfurls some additional storage room, too.

The e-Niro’s 451-litre boot is larger than the ubiquitous Nissan Qashqai's, but it's less than the 510-litres in the Seat Ateca. Mind you, it's still a good size, and you can store the charging cables under the load floor.

Check out the new Kia e-Niro. The Korean automaker has ushered this car into the automotive arena in the hope of putting to rest the reservations of electric-car naysayers. The cynics tend to think that vehicles without combustion engines don’t have the range or the performance of ‘regular’ cars – and they always slam the price. Well, after having a first drive of the e-Niro in South Korea I’m pleased to report that Kia will probably turn these disbelievers into believers. Why? Well, the e-Niro is more credible than any electric car to date, including Hyundai’s own mechanically related Kona Electric. While the two vehicles have similar powertrains and platforms,

the Kia houses its ingenious technology in a more traditionally-designed and more down-to-earth bundle. The pure-electric e-Niro looks almost the same as its plug-in and hybrid bedfellows even though there are some restrained alterations. Look intently, and you’ll spot the sleeker front bumper, a fared-in grille and 17-inch alloys. The rear of the Kia wears a modified trim to complement the nose, too, helping to provide a more slippery shape. Inside, the car is like other Kia Niros. The dashboard is bland yet functional, there’s an ultra-modern infotainment system, and importantly, there’s space for five-up. The most obvious difference, though, is within the centre console. The usual

At the time of writing, there’s just one trim level to select – and it’s called the First Edition. Okay, it’s not very original, but who cares when you get a car as well kitted-out as this? The e-Niro in this guise comes with a reversing camera, heated leather seats, lane keep assist and forward collision warning. The Kia doesn’t possess LED headlights, though – and that’s a shame. So, yes, the e-Niro is all very orthodox; that is until you examine the powertrain. The Kia gets a 204ps motor that propels the front wheels. This, as well as the 64kWh battery pack, is used in Hyundai’s Kona Electric. However, unlike the Kona, a 136ps, 39kWh variant won’t be sold in the UK. The motor’s power output boosts the Kia e-Niro’s athleticism well above the current plug-in and hybrid Niro models.

o

levels allows you to make the most of the e-Niro’s charge.

What’s more, once the substantial surge of torque is taken into consideration, the car feels livelier than many ‘warm’ family-hatchbacks. There’s even enough grunt to get a squeal from the front tyres, as I found out when putting my foot down to escape Seoul’s traffic. There are a couple of paddles behind the e-Niro’s steering wheel to regulate the force of brake regeneration. And, while you can’t drive the Kia with one pedal as you can in Nissan’s Leaf, the trio of

What about the all-important range then? Well, Kia claims that the e-Niro can manage 282 miles on one charge. More impressively, the official figure is higher when driving around town. That means many e-Niro drivers will only need to charge up once a week - at the most. Granted, the topping up process isn’t as straightforward as a quick fill up at the pumps, but connect the Kia to a 100kW quick charger and less than an hour later (54 minutes) you’ll have charged the battery pack from next to nothing to 80 per cent. That’s enough energy for the e-Niro to cover between 226 and nearly 300 miles, depending on how you

drive it. So, how much does this new all-electric car cost? Well, at £32,995 (after the £3,500 Government grant), the Kia e-Niro will only set you back around £1000 or so more than the flagship Nissan Qashqai. There are very few drawbacks with this e-Niro. Okay, it can understeer a bit due to the weighty battery-pack, but then this pack gives the Kia a low centre of gravity. So, no, there really aren't any significant gripes from me. At the end of the day, the allnew e-Niro is a no-nonsense five-door family crossover that makes electric car ownership more appealing than ever.

Hire a n! a m y d n a H or an m o w y d n a h

Do you have lots of household DIY tasks mounting up? Are you starting to feel a little overwhelmed?

Hire a handyman! A good handyman will have right tools, and know-how to get the job done efficiently. Hiring someone who knows what they are doing will eliminate a lot of stress. Also, they will almost certainly save you money, especially if you would have to buy the right tools before you start or make a mistake which has to be put right!

When hiring: Be Specific - Give an idea of the scale and scope of the job or jobs. For example, 'Rehang garden gate, repaint gate and 17 metres of 2m high garden fence.' Measurement are important as it gives idea of the scope of the task. Send photos if you can - In the example above send photos of the gate and the fence. A picture will save a lot of words and help the handyman provide an accurate quotation. Remember cheapest isn't necessarily the best. Check an online price guide. There is lots of guidance available, but you should definitely bear in mind the total hours required. The handyman should be insured and have his own tools. Check all insurance documents carefully. Take your time, be pleasant and ask questions. Get a quote in writing to make sure you know exactly what you're getting. Then sit back and relax while someone else takes care of your household jobs! e have 12 years to save the world! That was the stark headline news last October. If we, and others continue to live the way we do now, it will have catastrophic consequences for the future of life on this planet as we know it. The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there is only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a maximum of 1.5C, beyond which even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people. In fact it is estimated that 400 million people will be severely affected. The authors of the landmark report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said urgent and unprecedented changes are needed to reach the target, which they say is affordable and feasible although it lies at the most ambitious end of the Paris Agreement pledge to keep temperatures between 1.5C and 2C. The half-degree difference could also prevent coral reefs from being completely eradicated and ease pressure on the Arctic. The scientists believe extreme heat waves will be experienced by 14% of the world’s population at least once every five years at 1.5C.But that figure rises to more than a third of the planet if temperatures rise to 2C. Arctic sea ice would remain during most summers if warming is kept to 1.5C. But at 2C, ice free summers are 10 times more likely, leading to greater habitat loss for polar bears, whales, seals and sea birds. At 1.5C the proportion of the global population exposed to severe water shortage could be 50% lower than at 2C. Food scarcity would be less of a problem and hundreds of millions fewer people, particularly in poor countries, would be at risk of climate-related

poverty. The greatest difference would be to the natural world. Insects, which are vital for pollination of crops, and plants are almost twice as likely to lose half their habitat at 2C compared with 1.5C. Apparently 20% of the UK population believe the scientists predictions and are changing the way they live their lives. 20% are climate change deniers. But 60% of the population believe the scientists but don’t see why they should change their way of life. With the current level of commitments, the world is on course for a disastrous 3C of warming. But the good news is - it’s not too late. But there is a need for urgency. Governments need to listen and respond and so do we. Our response will need a complete transformation in the way we live our lives. The world cannot meet its targets without changes by us. We are told we need to buy less meat, milk, cheese and butter and more locally sourced seasonal food, throw less of our food away, drive electric cars, walk or cycle short distances, take trains and buses instead of planes, use videoconferencing instead of business travel, use a washing line instead of a tumble dryer, insulate our homes better and demand low carbon in every consumer product. These past months I have been impressed by one young 16 year old girl from Sweden, Greta Thunberg. She hopes that her student climate strikes on Friday’s can bring about positive change, as school children all over the world join the protest movement she started last summer as a lone campaigner outside the Swedish parliament. Perhaps we all need to wake up to what our younger generation are telling us. As Greta said in front of the media in Davos this year, “Adults keep saying, ‘We owe it to the young people to give them hope,’ But I don’t want your hope. I don't want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act.” Greta’s prophetic voice is one I believe we need to hear and act upon for God’s sake. Blessings on you all Rev Sam King (revsamking@talktalk.net) Design & Computer Graphics by Alexander S. Grenfell, Calne.
