POPULAR POP-UP POCKET PARK Calne’s pop-up pocket park is proving popular! Following its opening in July by Calne’s Town Mayor, the pop-up pocket park in the centre of the town has become a focus for community events. A successful community produce sharing morning with live music was held in August. People shared a wide range of vegetables from their allotments and gardens, ensuring that surplus veg didn’t go to waste and many more people could enjoy fresh (and free!) produce with their meals.
LOCAL
news
“It was a lovely, sociable morning, with people sharing and swapping veg, having a cup of coffee and listening to Terry Couchman singing”, said Mala Tu, secretary of the Pocket Park, whose idea it was to share surplus produce. Calne residents choose free veg to take away from the produce sharing morning.
CHRISTMAS CARDS Festive scenes of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s airbase at Semington near Melksham and of Stonehenge feature on the charity’s Christmas cards this year. It is the first time that the airbase, which the charity moved to in 2018, has been used as a design for the Christmas cards. The card shows the charity’s Bell 429 helicopter flying over the airbase, in Semington, with snow on the ground, a decorated Christmas tree outside and the charity’s cheery mascot bears Wilber and Marsha.
The Christmas cards are in packs of ten and are priced at £4. They are available in Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s charity shops in Maristow Street, Westbury, BA13 3DN, and in Maryport Street, Devizes, SN10 1AH. They are also for sale at the airbase’s reception at Outmarsh, Semington, BA14 6JX (Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 4.30pm). For more information visit: www.wiltshireairambulance.co.uk/christmas-cards-1/
The Stonehenge card also depicts the charity’s helicopter flying over the iconic monument, near Amesbury, in snow. Claire Kelly, people and wellbeing manager at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said:
LIFE EXPO
“We like to feature iconic landmarks in Wiltshire on our Christmas cards and we’re really pleased to include
During the first week of November over 700 children from our community visited Calne Free Church to see the ‘Life Expo’! ‘The Life Exhibition’ was a free, interactive RE resource, designed for Primary school children and to complement the non-statutory guidelines for RE. Using interactive tablets, graphic panels, quizzes, films, songs and a discussion café, ‘Life Expo’ helped children learn about the life of Jesus. We have been delighted with the response from local schools to visit the exhibition during that week. In fact, the exhibition has been shown to over 700 Primary pupils, in years 5 & 6, from Calne and surrounding villages. I have enclosed an information brochure about the exhibition. For further information you can visit the website and social media:
Stonehenge and our airbase at Semington this year. “Since we moved to Semington we have received a lot of support from residents, schools and businesses in the Melksham area who feel proud that our lifesaving service is located in their area. We hope that both designs will be popular with our supporters wherever they live and work. “The funds raised from our Christmas cards will help us to continue saving lives in Wiltshire and surrounding counties.”

RAF VETERAN THE SKIES
RETURNS TO
An 83-year-old RAF veteran left his care home for the day to return to the skies for a final time – recreating his first flight in a Tiger Moth biplane, 68 years after the original event. Antony ‘Spike’ Hughes, a resident at Goatacre Manor Care Centre, near Calne, joined the RAF as an apprentice at the tender age of 15. However, his role as ground crew, then an engineer, meant his feet stayed mostly on the ground during his time in the Air Force; a career spanning 45 years.
was a very special day today. Just amazing and emotional. He said the flight was a fitting end to his career, how wonderful. “I was a little bit nervous wondering how he was, so was amazed how he took it all in his stride when the plane had stopped. I said to my son ‘hopefully mum is up there looking down on him, thinking silly old fool!’ “He told us yesterday he wanted to do the loop de loop and given the chance I think he’d want to do it all again tomorrow.
He did however, take to the skies on the odd occasion, but with his first flight - in a Tiger Moth - seared in his mind’s eye, he always dreamed of getting in the cockpit one last time. Spike’s bucket list wish finally came true as he soared, looped and rolled through the skies over Bicester Airfield on Wednesday (9th October), thanks to the efforts of care home staff and the team at Finest Hour Experiences. The de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth biplane was operated by the RAF throughout the 1930s to 1950s, so is a model close to Spike’s heart. Almost 9,000 of the iconic aircraft were produced, but only around 250 are still in use today, one of which was used for Spike’s special flight. In a further fitting tribute, pilot Chris Thompson’s father, ‘Tommy’ Thompson was in the same squadron as Spike during their time in the RAF. Following the experience, Spike - who garnered his affectionate nickname during his time in the RAF - said: “Well, that was unexpected! It’s been a very long time since I was last in the skies, let alone seeing a Tiger Moth, the first aircraft I flew in when I joined the RAF. “It was a little bit bumpy and noisy, just like I remember, but was an excellent experience. What a fitting way to end my time in the air. I loved every second of it and can’t thank everyone at Goatacre enough for helping to fulfil my wish.” Asked if he was scared after performing acrobatic stunts in the biplane, including barrel rolls and loop de loops, Spike replied: “Scared? No, it’s natural being up there. I have more daunting bus rides!” His daughter, Cheryl, who is also a receptionist at Goatacre, said: “It
“Just seeing dad’s face made the whole experience really amazing. It’s very important for residents to get out of the home and do the things they’ve always wanted to do. Goatacre helped Spike complete his bucket list and for that we’re all very grateful.” Pilot Chris said it was ‘a pleasure’ to help Spike. He said: “It was great to commemorate Spike’s time serving in the RAF with a flight today. He couldn’t wipe that cheesy grin off his face.
“Part of what drives us at Finest Hour is the desire to help those with service backgrounds the best way we can. Spike’s a prime example of somebody who deserves our support and it was a pleasure to fly him from our home at Bicester Heritage.
“The big coincidence of the day was finding out my father and Spike’s father served in the same squadron, now we just need to piece together where and when!” In addition to fulfilling a lifelong ambition, Spike, who lives with Parkinsons, also used the event to help raise vital funds for Parkinson’s UK. Steve Ford, Chief Executive at Parkinson's UK, said: “It’s great to see Goatacre Manor Care Centre fulfil Spike’s bucket list wish of taking to the skies one last time in the Tiger Moth biplane. It is a fantastic tribute to his career. Spike is yet another example of an individual living with Parkinson’s who refuses to be held back by his diagnosis and continues to show great enthusiasm to achieve all that he can. “At Parkinson's UK, we share a similar attitude and drive, but our focus is on delivering better services and treatments for people living with the condition. Thanks to the money raised we’ll be able to support more people when they need us most and invest in our groundbreaking research that we believe will one day bring an end to the condition.
“We are so grateful for Spike’s support and want to say a huge thank you for taking part.” Goatacre Manor Care Centre is a family-run nursing and residential care home, which has been in the O’Dea family for 30 years and specialises in person-centred nursing care. Steve Oswald, Operations Director and Registered Manager at Goatacre, said: “We are thrilled that Spike was able to fulfil this bucket list wish. He’s dreamt of returning to the skies in his beloved Tiger Moth ever since he joined our Goatacre family, so to finally get him back in the cockpit is just a wonderful achievement for all involved particularly Spike.” For more information https://www.goatacre.com call 01249 760464 www.towncriermagazine.com

100% natural plant and mineral based cleaning products made with essential oils, plant extracts and minerals.
OUR STORY It is no surprise that modern day living is more toxic than 30 years ago, more chemicals are used in the home than ever before and pollutants are all around, effecting everyone, pets, wildlife and our Planet. Harsh toxic chemicals found in many household cleaners affect skin, airways, lungs and eyes, with long term research suggesting that certain chemicals cause cancer and can even change our DNA over a period of time.
CO NT E N TS JUNE 2019
Our organic, eco-friendly, pet safe and vegan friendly cleaning products can bring comfort to householders who worry that modern day living can’t be clean and natural without the use of harsh chemicals. We firmly believe that our cleaning products and concentrates will also aid those who suffer from skin conditions, like eczema and dermatitis. Indeed we have proof from our very own 'Squeekies' and we are hugely confident that our products provide outstanding cleaning of all surfaces around the home and removes limescale in a healthly and natural way. Our concentrates contain enough product to refill up to four 750ml bottles, bringing additional benefits such as: • less packaging • less storage space • reduced carbon footprint
It’s true when we say ‘we love nothing better than a Squeeky Clean home’.
OUR INGREDIENTS With our unique insight into what homeowners want from a cleaning product, we have taken a huge amount of time to consider every ingredient that has gone into our bottles. All ingredients are 100% natural, made with essential oils, botanical extracts and minerals. They are free from toxic chemicals and artificial fragrances. Where possible we have sourced from certified organic growers and will continue to search for suppliers who care about our Planet and sustainability.

THINK SMART

Leaving obvious political issues out of the equation, one of the most emotive issues recently has been that of plastic pollution. David Attenborough’s documentaries about the Blue Planet has wowed millions in recent years, but in some ways more powerful was the BBC documentary, ‘Drowning in Plastic’. The shock of the state of our oceans has been talked about widely, especially in schools, where the next generation are up in arms and keen to be eco-warriors. We have been forced to adopt the concept of re-using shopping bags, due to the tax on disposable ones. Should we not adopt more of a re-use culture without ‘for the flight of your life’ it being forced upon us?

Disposable fashion contributes millions of nonrecyclable items to landfill weekly. Surely, it would be more prudent to buy quality longer-lasting items of clothing that can be worn for years. I am a wildlife and pet portrait watercolour artist based in the Bath area. Nothing gives me more pleasure than revealing a just completed painting of a beloved pet to its owner. My aim is to not only portray an accurate illustration of someone’s four legged friends but to also capture the essence of its character and expression. These portraits become family treasures once a pet has sadly passed on. I am also more than happy to organise for your commissioned portrait to be printed onto cards/Christmas cards if done soon enough ahead of time!

HAVE AN ECO-FRIENDLY
Wrapping Paper
While we all dutifully put our festive wrapping paper into the recycling bin, many types of wrapping can’t actually be recycled. Paper with foil or glitter can’t be recycled, or paper that still has sticky tape on it – if you’re not sure, try scrunching the paper into a ball. If it won’t scrunch down, it contains unrecyclable materials. To go eco-friendly, make your own wrapping paper by decorating plain brown parcel wrap with stamps, stencils or paper stickers, or purchase reusable cloth gift bags.
We’ve all been guilty of buying gifts just for the sake of it – things that the recipient doesn’t need or perhaps even want, but you feel you should get them something. This year, think zerowaste and only buy gifts that make sense – where you can, support local, handmade, eco-friendly, and multiuse gifts.
Gift Savvy
Christmas by Celia Jenkins
Handmade is from the Heart You don’t need to be a master artisan to give homemade gifts – while hand-knitted jumpers are lovely, your friends and family will also appreciate a jar of chutney or a batch of cookies that you’ve made yourself.
HANDMADE
Festive Food
We all have Christmas traditions that we love to uphold, but with many people changing their diets to help save the planet, why not make a change at Christmas, too? We all overdo it at Christmas – something that distresses our waistlines and wallets as well as the planet. Perhaps this year you can pare down your dinner spread by selecting braised red cabbage or Brussels sprouts with walnuts or caramelised root veg, rather than going for all three? With many people opting for vegan or vegetarian diets these days, there are plenty of ideas around for meat free meals, even on Christmas day. If you don’t want to cut out the meat element (and we don’t blame you!) perhaps you could just cut down? Choosing a smaller turkey, or picking a different meat altogether, could help reduce wastage. Also, paying more for organic, good quality meat is a simple change that makes a big difference.
Cards
Whether you send seasonal greetings cards to friends far and wide, or just give them to your family members, why not make your own this year? A handmade card is fun to make, often cheaper to produce, and has that personal touch that you don’t get with a shop bought card.
History
The first known Christmas cards were sent in 1611, and the recipient was King James I of England. Commercial Christmas cards weren’t produced until 1843, and early cards didn’t bear designed that we would deem Christmassy today – rather than religious or winter scenes, the cards bore more resemblance to springtime scenes, depicted through animals, children or fairies. Cards became popular in the 1870’s, and Hallmark Cards was established in 1913, remaining one of the most popular card producers today. With advances in technology making it easier to send e-cards or email greetings, Christmas cards are far less popular today, but many people have turned to homemade cards or charity cards. www.towncriermagazine.com

What you need
There are numerous styles of Christmas cards that you can easily make from home, so your materials depend on what design you’ve chosen. The most basic Christmas cards can be hand drawn or painted onto a plain card, so all you need are the cards (with envelopes) and the drawing tools. For more elaborate designs, the following materials can be used: stickers (in paper, foam, felt, wood or other materials), stamps and ink, ribbon, die-cutters, embossers, quilling, decoupage, yarn, origami or more. You can also buy cardmaking kits from all good craft shops.
Learning to do it
The Whitehall Garden Centre in Lacock is running two calligraphy events on November 20th, teaching you the basics of this elegant art in preparation for penning your Christmas messages. At the Crochet Cabin in Melksham, there will be a crochet Christmas card workshop on November 22nd, 10:00 – 12:00, £22 per person. For a printmaking workshop to make cards and wrapping paper, head to the Salisbury Arts Centre on December 14th, £7:00 per person. On December 20th, head to No1 Royal Crescent in Bath from 10:00 – 5:00 to join their workshop making a traditional Georgian Christmas card. This event is free with normal admission.
Christmas Trees
Cardmaking guides and ideas are available on websites such as Country Living, Wikihow, Good Housekeeping and Martha Stewart. There are countless Youtube tutorials on how to make Christmas cards, with designs ranging from easy to elaborate. Watch some videos to get a few ideas before you buy your materials.
Locally
If you’re sending cards through the post rather than hand delivering them, consider the weight of the card – postage will be more for cards that have been layered with heavier decorations.

Fake Christmas trees are made from synthetic materials that take a lot of energy to produce and aren’t easy to recycle. However, they can last for years, and when you think about the fact that real trees are intensely produced and then thrown away annually, they create their own waste, too. If you want to get a fake Christmas tree, perhaps consider getting a second-hand one to cut down on waste, or splash out on a good quality one that will last for decades of careful usage. If you want a real tree, try to find a supplier that grows sustainably and has FSC-certification. Another option is to buy a small one in a pot from a garden centre, and keep it in your garden throughout the rest of the year. www.towncriermagazine.com

Where: Poznan, Poland When: 16/11/19 – 21/12/19 What: To see something a bit different, head to Poznan to catch the Ice Sculpting Festival at the Christmas market – held during the second weekend of December. Artists cut through several tonnes of ice to produce these amazing sculptures. Market revellers can also enjoy delicious seasonal treats from the popular food stalls.

You might be surprised to know that the first Christmas markets date back to the Late Middle Ages, and were held in Germany. Many of the popular markets across Germany started in the 1300’s and 1400’s, but the Christkindlmarkt tradition has now spread across the globe. Read on to find out where you can find the best Christmas markets abroad this winter.
Where: Budapest, Hungary When: 23/11/19 – 06/01/2020 What: While the ice-skating rink (with a Christmas tree in the middle) is quite small, this attraction at the market is actually free for children to enjoy, along with other activities. A light show dazzles on the buildings surrounding the square, and the layout of the space makes this market far less crowded than similarly sized events.
hristmas MARKETS
Where: Tallinn, Estonia When: 15/11/19 – 07/01/20
Where: Erfurt, Germany When: 26/11/19 – 22/12/19
What: Voted the Best Christmas Market in Europe, it’s easy to see why with the market stalls set amongst the medieval buildings that have been beautifully preserved. In a location that’s often dusted in snow at this time of year, it’s a scene befitting of a Christmas card. Stalls run rings around the giant Christmas tree in the centre of the square, and there’s a decorated land train that cuts through the crowds.
What: One of the finest markets in Germany, this is an event that offers so much more than a shopping experience. While the 20 metre Christmas tree is dwarfed by the colourful Ferris Wheel, the fairground attractions – which also include a stunning Carousel and enchanted forest area for children – certainly attract a younger crowd to the event. Check out the life-sized nativity, which is handcrafted and a real showstopper.

On the farm with Lydiard Turkeys This year (like last year) it was swelteringly hot in early July when our day old turkey chicks we’re delivered, the heat is great when they are young and it gets them off to a cracking start. For the first three weeks the poults are kept in with heat and plenty of food and water points but after that they are free to spend the days exploring out doors, firstly in two pens that are full of nettles (the turkeys favorite food) and then out into the spacious fruit orchard to feast on apples, plumbs and lots more. I’m sure the mixed diet and exercise add to the beautiful flavor and texture but the single most important thing is the age. By Christmas our turkeys are 25 weeks old, that’s twice the age of a supermarket turkey. With age comes fat, and that’s the key component for a top-notch turkey. We’re very traditional in the way we process our turkeys, a team of friends help with the plucking which is all done by hand, an art that is fast being replaced by machine but we find hand plucking gives the best finish. The birds are then hung in our fridges for a week to mature in the traditional way before being butchered and packed in boxes with their instructions. Everything is done on the farm so we have full control, its hard but the end result is well worth all the work! www.towncriermagazine.com

Cranberry BREAD & BUTTER PUDDING
“Falling down water” or “Fire water” were just two of the popular names the North American Indians gave to the crude forms of Whisky the white man, be him bar tender in some scruffy Western town, a drifter, or saddle tramp or cattle hand straight off a cattle drive. Most of the whisky of the time was home made and having a “still” somewhere on your property was not classed as illegal. The cowboys were paid in all kinds of goods from jewellery to rough gold nuggets considered as worthless to the Indians, who much preferred to ask higher prices for the goods they made and valued, such as blankets, moccasins and even their young daughters as servants and other uses that can only be guessed at. In the years of prohibition when saloons in the big cities were not allowed to sell whisky, hidden back rooms where drinkers could indulge in their “golden tipple” became very popular and because drinkers could booze without fear of discovery in the secret dens known os “speakeasies”. Once that law was relaxed, having your own “still” was still illegal. Many backwoods settlements though kept up the tradition, and places like Tennesee brewed delightful mixtures with the additive of pure spring water from a deep cave lake and a few drops of charcoal. Those special drinks were known as “sippin whisky”, to be savoured not gulped. The best whisky today contains pure Scottish water and is matured in oak barrels until it reaches just the right age. The worlds most awarded single malt whisky is still brewed by one of the last family distilleries. I think everyone in Scotland must know of the amazingly smooth “Glenfiddich”. 26

Serves: 4 Prep time: 20 minutes (plus resting time) Cooking Time: 45 minutes
Ingredients 1oz / 25 g dried cranberries 100ml Cranberry juice 2 tsp sugar 4 eggs 450ml / 16floz milk 450ml / 16floz single cream (you can use all milk if you prefer) 2oz / 50g sugar Grated rind of 1 orange 2oz / 50 g butter 1 loaf bread (at least a day old, sliced into thick cubes) Soft brown sugar for sprinkling
Method Poach the dried cranberries in the cranberry juice with 2 tsp sugar. Reduce the mixture down until it thickens and becomes a little jammy. Place it on one side to cool. In a separate dish beat together the milk, cream (if using) and eggs, and then stir in the sugar and grated orange rind. Butter the bread on both sides and place into a buttered dish, alternating layers of bread with layers of cranberry. Finish with a layer of bread then sprinkle a few cranberries over the top. Pour the egg mixture over everything and let the pudding rest for at least 2 hours (or overnight in the fridge). Preheat the oven to 180C or gas mark 4. Sprinkle the finished pudding with soft brown sugar and place in the oven for 45 minutes. This is lovely served with crème fraîche or custard.
FOOD
Parsnip Soup
An easy luxurious autumnal soup! Prep time: Less than 30 mins Cooking time: 30 mins Serves 4

1 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 600g/1lb 5oz parsnips, cut into 1cm/½-inch cubes ½ tsp dried red chilli flakes, plus extra to serve 1 litre/1¾ pints hot veg stock

Traditionally made from from potatoes, the simplicity of its first brewing ensured that even if the harvest was poor and the smaller herds froze or starved to death during the freezing months of winter, there was always some cache of alcohol to turn to to ease the despair, until both strength and despair gave in to the elements.

Nutmeg
SUPER SPICE
This aromatic spice is derived from the eggshaped seed of the Nutmeg tree which is ready to harvest around 7 years after it has been planted and gives its fullest crops after 20 years. A few hundred years ago, nutmeg was one of the most valuable and sought after spices.
Nowadays it is available all year round and is similar in flavor to mace which is the red coating of the hard seed inside the fruit, with the nutmeg itself being the nut (or seed). Mace is a little more bitter to taste. This is a perfect winter spice and is evocative
of Christmas with it being such a super addition to mulled wines, cakes and bakes. It is best to buy nutmeg whole, store it in an airtight container and simply grate it freshly when needed. It is easy to grate and provides much more flavor than ready ground types. It’ll keep indefinitely this way.

Combine the flour, baking powder and bicarb in a bowl with a 1/4tsp salt, then tip this into the wet ingredients and stir in. Finally, fold in the blueberries and divide the mixture between each of the muffin cases.
Bake for 5 minutes then turn the oven down to 180c/160c fan/gas 4 and bake for a further 15-18 minutes until they have risen and are golden in colour. You can check if they are fully cooked by popping in a cocktail stick to see if it comes out clean. Cool the muffins in the tin on a rack for 10 minutes or so then remove them from the tin to finish cooling.
These will keep for up to 4 days in an airtight container and can be freshened up in the microwave for 10 seconds or so on high power.

BEAT ANXIETY
Breathe Don’t fight the racing heart or sweaty palms, breathe into it. Place the palm of your hand on your stomach and breathe slowly and deeply. The aim is to train your mind to get used to coping with panic, which takes the fear of fear away. Face your fears Avoiding fears
makes them seem scarier. By facing them you should start to make them fade.
Don’t try to be perfect We’re
surrounded by images of perfection on Facebook and Instagram. It can make us feel very anxious if we perceive our own lives as not measuring up. Real life is full of stresses; bad days and setbacks happen, and it's important to remember that life is messy.
Visualise a happy place
Practice closing your eyes and imagine a place of safety and calm. It might be a beach you love, or a forest, or snuggled up in bed with your puppy. Let the positive feelings soothe you until you feel more relaxed.
Talk Sharing fears takes away a lot of their scariness. Talk to a partner, a friend or a family member, or if you don’t feel you can talk to someone you know call a helpline such as Samaritans. If your anxiety is not getting better, please talk to your GP. Call The Samaritans free on their 24 hour help line 116 123
Do I need a Flu Jab? OST OF US KNOW by now that certain groups of people should visit the GP for a flu jab: the elderly, diabetics, asthmatics etc.But pharmacists will tell you that even if you don’t fall into one of the categories above a flu jab is still a sensible precaution. But why would a healthy person request a flu vaccine? Well, seasonal flu is a deeply unpleasant illness. It generally requires a week or so off work to recover and can trigger other conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia. The average person with flu infects one or two other people through sneezing, coughing and touch. If you work with the general public, in a shop for example, you are more at risk of being exposed to the virus so you might consider a flu jab a worthwhile investment. A business owner may consider the impact a week off sick would have on his business and opt to protect himself or herself for that reason. Children are much more likely to pick up and pass on bugs as they are in such close proximity to each other all day. For this reason teachers and parents might think it wise to have a jab. Unless you fall into one of the at-risk categories you will have to be vaccinated, but it’s inexpensive (generally under £15) and many pharmacists administer the vaccine on their premises so you won’t have to book an appointment with your GP or take time off work. Flu jabs are generally safe unless you have an allergy to eggs or have had a previous allergic reaction to a shot. So discuss protecting yourself with your pharmacist today.

CARE & SUPPORT
Odette Funeral Director named Funeral Planner of the Year for West England On 21st September Odette Drummond and Sara Jones of Odette Funeral Director attended the Golden Charter Funeral Planner of the Year Awards at The Royal Lancaster Hotel, London. The family run business was again nominated for top funeral planner for West England. Again, for the second year in a row they won their category. Odette Drummond said “It is a huge achievement for us and I am so proud. Myself, Sara and Tom work hard for our families and as much goes into our Pre-Paid Plans as do our funeral arrangements. There is a lot of choice and decisions to make and we offer our advice and support at this crucial time.” Sara added, “We are completely dedicated to our role in the community and to be recognised in this way is a fantastic achievement for all of us.” The awards are run by Funeral Plan provider Golden Charter, the largest independent sellers of plans. The host for the evening was writer, broadcaster and former MP Gyles Brandreth. In addition to the Funeral Planner of the Year accolade, the Woodland Trust has dedicated trees on behalf of Odette Funeral Director, which are to be planted locally at Clanger Wood near Westbury in recognition of the company’s achievement.

Aaron & Jonathon Bewley Funeral Directors wins ‘green’ funeral award Aaron & Jonathon Bewley Funeral Directors (AJB) of Corsham, Chippenham and Melksham has taken home the ‘Green Responsibility’ Award at this year’s Funeral Planner of the Year Awards, run by funeral plan provider Golden Charter. Hosted by writer, broadcaster and former MP Gyles Brandreth, the ceremony took place in central London at the Lancaster Hotel on Saturday 21st September which highlighted the achievements of independent funeral directors throughout the UK and Ireland. Aaron Bewley, Director of AJB, said "This is the proudest moment for us as it recognises our ongoing commitment to being as environmentally conscious as possible within our workplace, how we care for our clients, the products we use and supply, but also recognising our future commitments to a more sustainable world." Suzanne Grahame, Chief Executive of Golden Charter, said: “We’re delighted to recognise AJB’s commitment to reducing their environmental impact, benefiting local people throughout Wiltshire and beyond. Aside from all of the day-to-day demands of running a busy funeral director business, it’s fantastic to see this independent firm doing even more for the benefit of the wider community.” In addition to the Funeral Planner of the Year accolade, the Woodland Trust has dedicated trees on behalf of AJB, which are to be planted locally at Clanger Woods in Westbury, Wiltshire, in recognition of the company’s achievement.

What is Live-In Care?
Coming to the decision that your loved one may need extra care and support can be difficult for all involved. Considering the different care options available can make the process even more difficult. When the time comes, it’s important to remember that the type of care chosen can not only depend on the level of support needed by an individual, but also on each individual’s circumstances. Live-in care is an affordable and genuine alternative to residential care. As part of the service, a fully qualified care worker will provide care in a person’s own home, providing a range of support that could include medication management, personal care, companionship as well as domestic tasks. It can help those with a range of care needs, providing both freedom and independence as they remain in the comfort and familiar setting of their family home, whilst benefiting from round the clock care. Live-in care can also be a great source of companionship and friendship for individuals. With each care worker being matched based on similar interests, care worker and client often build strong rapports, key for reducing isolation and loneliness. As a whole, live-in care boasts many benefits, enabling people to live well at home for longer.

A single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade. Purchase or make your own reusable produce bag but be sure to wash them often.
Give up the gum – Chewing gum is made of a synthetic rubber which is actually plastic!
Buy boxes over bottles -
If your laundry detergent comes in a box it will be more easily recycled than a plastic bottle.
Buy from bulk bins -
If possible, purchase food, like cereal, pasta, and rice from bulk bins using your own container or bag. Not only will you save on packaging you'll also save money.
Take your own cup to coffee shops Some shops offer a reduction in price too!
It all adds up +
Ditch the disposables - Disposable nappies are a huge source of landfill. Modern cloth nappies are nothing like the monstrosities of yesteryear. Check them out, reduce your baby's carbon footprint and save money in the process.
We look after your accounts while you run your business

Squeeze your own -
Make your own fresh squeezed juice or eat fruit instead of buying juice in plastic bottles. It's healthier and better for the environment.

t’s an American word but ‘fall’ is so much more descriptive for this time of year. It conjures up the leaves literally drifting off the trees, whistling around on pavements with beautiful accents of gold and green. The crispness of a sunny morning with mist rolling across fields and the freshness of the air makes this season particularly sumptuous and is something that we can easily replicate in our homes.
wish to mix your rooms up. Large plastic storage crates are useful for this - and easy to label them up so it’s clear what is inside. It’s a good idea to store things by season. For this time of year, it’s all about textures. and creating a warmer, cosier feel in your home. Knitted blankets, soft rugs and unscented candles are perfect to create this atmosphere. Think about using warmer colours too. If you have a neutral backdrop in your room you can successfully switch out the colour scheme using soft furnishings.

FOR
We have talked before about using accessories to easily adjust the tone of a room and nowadays there are many gorgeous pieces that you can source, that don’t need to be expensive, which will allow you to create the look and feel that you desire. Cushions, candles, throws and pictures are all easy enough to come by now but also don’t be too led by ‘trends’. You don’t want to be replacing these things every season as this isn’t environmentally, or economically pleasing. Instead, think about the longevity of the piece before you purchase it and consider what could be added to it over time. Ensure you have some neat storage solutions so that you can pop away what you’re not using and it’s easily accessible when you 48

Browns, burnt oranges and gold make a pleasing combination, but also think about using greys and blues. With the right tones you can create warmth with these as they are darker to the eye yet still incredibly stylish.
Side lamps also provide more muted lighting - consider changing the shade to a darker colour so that when the lamp is switched on it diffuses a different type of light to a brighter shade that you might have used in summer. Add decorative trays to tables and shelves - you can neatly group special ornaments or frames and it makes it easier to clean too as you just need to lift the tray away instead of multiple pieces. There is so much you can do to be creative in your home and at this time of year you can really throw yourself into it as the likelihood is you’ll be spending more time indoors due to shorter, darker days!

HOME FRAGRANCE What’s the first thing a guest notices when they walk into your home? Your antique coat stand? The ornate mirror? The pristine hardwood flooring? No, it’s actually the smell. Smell is our most powerful sense and will override the other four senses if something foul wafts our way. So, if your house smells like musty wet dog, stinky shoes, or last night’s fish supper, none of the other details will matter. How your home smells leaves an impression on visitors so it’s nice to make that
impression a good one, and of course it’s nicer for you too; after all you live there!
CALNE’S HALF PRICE TAXI
There’s a whole industry devoted to home fragrance, so you have lots of choice. But the secret to a nose-friendly atmosphere isn’t synthetic scents. Aside from being overly perfumed, they often contain chemicals that can irritate some sensitive people, particularly asthma and migraine sufferers.
AIRPORT and SEAPORT TRANSFERS
Let the outside in The simplest most effective way to freshen up your home is to open doors and windows yet very few of us do it on a daily basis. Stale air is a health hazard and a mood zapper. I’m not suggesting that you leave the windows open all day in November, but just five minutes will give you an instant, and totally free, air refresh.

Grow an indoor herb garden
Fresh herbs such as basil and mint give off a lovely aroma in the kitchen. If you’re feeling ambitious try planting a herb box overflowing with marjoram, lemon balm and rosemary. Sweep your hand across them to agitate the foliage and spread the fragrance around the room.
Ring Mike on
Chop up a few lemons and limes
For a quick and easy fresh smell, you can’t beat citrus. Slice a few lemons, limes and oranges into thin wheels and bake them at a very low temperature for several hours until they are dry to the touch.

HEAVEN scent
You can pretty much forget about them while they are in the oven except for the fact your house will smell incredible. When they are done you can make potpourri. Thread some on a string with a cinnamon stick and some star anise and hang in your kitchen or pop them in a pretty glass bowl.
Buy quality scented candles Organic beeswax scented candles are very different to synthetic chemically fragranced varieties. Try them and you won’t look back. If you are wondering which scents to try, fresh citrus scents have universal appeal; incense and patchouli are lovely at this time of year. Vanilla has long been named as the most popular choice among air-freshener companies and in candle form it takes on an even warmer, more mellow quality. Make your own air freshener
For a quick-fix, all-natural air freshener, fill a pan with water, add fresh rosemary or lavender and bring to the boil, then simmer for an hour and let the vapours drift around the house, scenting the air. Later, you can let the mixture cool and decant the liquid into a spray bottle. Store in the fridge and spritz a little as needed.

PETS
No dog owner wants to think about putting their dog to sleep, but it’s a decision that you may find yourself faced with at end of your dog’s life.
d
Although its heartbreaking, sometimes the kindest option for your pet is to let them go. It’s never easy to agree to put your dog down but doing your research before the day arrives may help you to come to terms with the decision.

will be hard for everyone, especially children. If you can, discuss the situation with them honestly and try to focus on what is best for your dog.
A good vet will be happy to discuss the process with you. They will also have a good insight into how your dog’s health issues will affect their quality of life, helping you consider things like mobility, appetite, breathing, comfort, happiness and response to treatment, but ultimately the final decision will be yours.
Reassure them that the reason the procedure is called ‘putting a dog to sleep’ is because it is very peaceful and will help their beloved pet pass away with as little pain and distress as possible. The vet administers a measured overdose of a drug, similar to an anaesthetic, which will put your dog into a deep and permanent ‘sleep.’ If you want to, you can stroke or cuddle your dog as they drift off.
Your dog is no doubt a much-loved member of your family so the decision

Afterwards you have a number of choices. You can bury your dog in your garden but bear in mind that some councils place restrictions on home burials, and you will not be permitted to do this on public ground or if you are in rented accommodation. You may arrange for your dog to be buried or cremated at a pet cemetery or you can ask the vet to arrange a cremation. In the days and weeks after loss of your dog, try to focus on the good times you had together, and take comfort in the fact that the final decision you made for your pet was the best one for them. Weight clinics for your pets Are you concerned about your pet’s weight? Hayley Hughes RVN
www.georgevetgroup.co.uk
The George Veterinary Hospital, Malmesbury 01666 823165 The George Veterinary Group, Royal Wootton Bassett 01793 852458 Did you know that up to 50% of our pets* are above their ideal weight? This can happen for several reasons, such as eating more calories than are required for an individual, decreased exercise levels, perhaps due to older age or lack of motivation, and neutering which can alter metabolism. Some breeds can be more prone to weight gain too. If your pet is overweight, it could lead to a decreased quality of life and an apparent lack of energy. There is also the risk of other conditions developing such as osteoarthritis in dogs and diabetes or urinary tract disease in cats.
This is where our Nurse Clinics can help! With our tailored Weight Clinics, we can give your pet an exercise regime and diet plan to follow, as well as other tips to encourage weight loss. We also have recommendations for prescription diets to try if you are really struggling to get the weight off your pet. In addition to our Weight Clinics we offer a range of nurse-led consultations at both our branch in Royal Wootton Bassett as well as at our Veterinary Hospital in Malmesbury. Our Registered Veterinary Nurses provide Dental Clinics, as well as being able offer appointments for nail clips, anal gland expressions, postoperative checks, pampered puppy checks and administration of flea and worming treatments. Our RVNs look forward to welcoming you at either of our locations. You can contact us on 01793 852458 (RWB) or 01666 823165 (Malmesbury) to book in with us. *Hill’s

The Maldives Top Five Reasons to visit
Switch it up from the rat race to island pace and take a trip in 2020 to the Maldives. Tick an overwater villa off the bucket list and head to some of the most iconic islands in the world. Surrounded by natural beauty, complete with a colourful culture, we recommend the Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu to tick off your holiday hit-list in 2020.
1 2 3 4 5
A natural wonder – get a bird's-eye view over the glistening waters as you soar in a seaplane as soon as you arrive. As a desginated UNESCO biosphere reserve and home to incredible marine life and reefs, you will feel completely connected to nature whether by land or sea.
Environmentally engaged – sustainability is currently the hot topic for travel and this resort is ticking all the boxes investing in its incredible island. Passionate about preservation, Coco encourages guests to plant a coral nursery, join in on weekly environmental sessions or volunteer at the Marine Turtle Rescue Centre.
Whimsical well-being – the busy rhythm of modern life means we need more mindful moments to keep the balance. The Coco Spa lies in a lush, leafy canopy, offering an uplifting natural sanctuary. Achieve next level relaxation with a Coco signature treatment, where your masseur pours local virgin coconut oil over seashells, gently but deeply relieving muscle tension.
Feel good food – Exclusive to the Coco Spa, guests can indulge in an Edible Spa Menu, where treatments are entirely made from ingredients you can eat. In the restaurants, you will find some of the freshest ingredients picked fresh from the chef's garden located in the middle of the island.
Fit in fitness – with all the wonderful watersports available, you'll manage to keep your cardio in check without even noticing. Take a jaw-dropping jetski across the ocean, snorkel the shores and for the funseekers, bounce around on a banana boat ride!

Gingerland
S
Straight from his Directorial and Choreographic debut at Sadler’s Wells, London, BBC Strictly Come Dancing professional Neil Jones will be touring the UK for the very first time in 2020, with his brand new show – Gingerland – making a stop at Chippenham Town Council’s Neeld Community and Arts Centre. The dancer and well-known choreographer will be going from the back of Claudia’s area to starring in his very own dance show like you have never seen before - comedy, special effects and a lot of outstanding dancing! Neil will demonstrate to you the real reason he has so many Ballroom and Latin Championship titles to his name, including being the three-time World and eight-time British Champion. Jones, who has danced with Judy Murray and Anita Rani on the Strictly Christmas specials and regularly appears on It Takes Two, has been part of the hit BBC show

since joining in 2016. However, series 17 will see Neil paired with a celebrity for the first time. On the Gingerland 2020 Tour, Neil will take you on a journey showcasing what made him unique within the dancing world and introduce you to the very people who influenced him as a dancer. It just so happens that they were all Ginger! Leader of Chippenham Town Council Sandie Webb says of the event “This show is a must, both for anyone who aspires to move in the artistic light of professional dancing and for those of us who prefer to enjoy the art from the comfort of the side-lines. The Neeld is now attracting such a variety of acts to its stage that the people of North Wiltshire and beyond can enjoy live theatre in its many guises without the need to traverse the bustle of city life.” Tickets for Neil Jones: Gingerland are available from www.neeld.co.uk 01249 446699 or from Chippenham Town Hall.

Toyota’s ability to manage short distances on electricity only could save you forking out at the pumps. It’s stress-free to drive, with agreeable visibility and light steering. Whisk things up, and there’s enough pull from the Camry’s 218ps that you seldom need to go full throttle.
and private hire businesses. But that’s no bad thing - it’s roomy enough for five adults and, at 524 litres, the boot is large. The Toyota’s Achilles' heel, however, is its infotainment system. It is uncooperative, and the glass touchscreen on the dashboard is maddeningly insensitive when you touch it. The automaker says it will fit Android Auto and Apple CarPlay soon, but it won’t be obtainable at launch. If you can ignore the Camry’s convoluted fascia, you won’t be let down by the factory-fitted equipment. There’s lots of it and only two trims to go for. The ‘Design’ version retails for £29,995, and the top ‘Excel’ model will reduce your bank account by another £1,300. The Design has dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, keyless entry and LED lights. It also comes with 17-inch alloys. Progress to the Camry Excel, as test-driven at the model’s media launch in Croatia, and you will find LED fog lamps, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a Blind Spot Monitor and wireless phone charging.
T
he Toyota Camry is a bit of a legend - 19 million have been made and sold since 1982. It’s been away from the UK for 15 years, though – and we’ve missed it. Toyota’s also missed selling it here, so the Camry’s finally coming back – and this time it’s in hybrid guise. The Japanese motor-maker reckons the Camry's petrolelectric powertrain and attractive styling make it the ‘right vehicle at the right time’ to return to these shores. Is it? Well, the Camry is costly - but look a little closer, and the £29,995 price-tag on the basic model seems less of an issue when you realise how inexpensive it will be to run. Depending on the way you drive and where your drive, the 74

Regrettably, it’s common for hybrids to disappoint when it comes to refinement at motorway speeds. The subdued powerplant in the Toyota means your ears become sensitive to other noises. Tyre roar begins to become irksome, as does the persistent wind whistle. But it still doesn’t make the Camry bad company at 70mph - you just need to turn the music up more. There’s no dodging the fact that the latest Camry is going to appeal to taxi firms

Christmas LIGHTS
DEVIZES
Friday 29th November 2019
MELKSHAM Saturday 7th December 2019
Melksham’s Christmas Lights Switch On will take place on Saturday the 7th December 2019. Hailed some of the best lights in the South West the event is particularly special as it is organised by a team of willing volunteers supported by the Town Council. One of the biggest events in the town calendar will see hundreds of people flock to the Market Place to see the lights turned on at 5pm, celebrated with a firework display. The festivities begin with the arrival of Santa and the opening of the Christmas Fayre from 2:30pm with lots of fantastic stalls supporting local crafts and good causes. The Market Place itself will be transformed with a stage hosting a DJ and local band the Decibelles, lots of stalls and funfair rides. Following his arrival excited children will be able to meet Santa in his grotto from 3pm. This wonderful event is not to be missed and welcomes all generations to the spectacular lighting of the town.

The lantern parade will wind its way through Devizes’ streets, arriving in the Market Place ready for the big Christmas light switch on. The parade is a magical spectacle with a river of hundreds of lanterns made by local schools, community groups and individuals with some extra special super sized guests! Father Christmas will switch the lights on from his chimney at approximately 6:45pm in the Market Place. Fireworks will follow soon after.
CORSHAM Friday 6th December 2019
This year’s Switch On is Friday 6 December, from 5pm, with the lights on at 6pm.
On Friday 6 December, the Christmas Lights go on in Corsham in the town’s traditional, family-friendly way with a Christmas market, entertainment, live music – including the footstomping Ushti Baba who’ll start proceedings off just after 5pm - fairground rides for younger children and lots, lots more. Plus, of course, Father Christmas will be there, along with his reindeer. The Lights go on at 6pm, and the fun continues until around 7.15pm.
The week before, on Saturday 30 November, you can get your Christmas wish in early at the town’s Wishing Tree event, from 10am-1pm in the High Street. Come along, write your wish and it’ll be popped into a Christmas bauble and hung on the Christmas tree. Wishes are free – and every wish made gets a chocolate too! – but donations to Doorway or Wiltshire Mind will be gratefully received.
For more information, contact Corsham Town Council: towncouncil@corsham.gov.uk or call 01249 702130. www.corsham.gov.uk.
TROWBRIDGE Saturday 30th November 2019

Between 10.30am and 6pm, visitors will find a huge range of family-friendly entertainment and activities throughout the day, fairground attractions, festive donkey rides, great food and drink, and live music. This year, the organisers are delighted to announce that Rocktopus – The Ultimate Rock Band for Kids and Families - will be providing early evening entertainment on the stage before the BIG switch-on itself at 5.00pm! Also, St. James’ Parish Church in the town will be hosting its popular Shoppers’ Carol Service from 5.30pm.
feel to proceedings, the lantern parade will help everyone to share in the magic of Christmas – spreading light throughout the town! The parade will take place at 4.00pm, starting from St. James’ Church. Also, Christmas cards sold in support of the Mayor's charity ruksak45218 will soon be available to buy from the Information Centre.

ovember can be a bit of a grey, miserable month. I like to inject some colour with winter bedding plants. A cheerful pot by the front door can make you smile on the gloomiest morning.
Obviously, the choice of plants for winter is not as large as during the summer months but there are enough varieties around to make very attractive combinations for pots. My favourite plant for winter pots has to be the ornamental cabbage. These robust beauties come in wonderful colours including cream, pink and purple – with either attractive frilly or very spiky leaves. They pair beautifully with winter-flowering pansies and hardy cyclamen. Try planting three pots of different sizes using a colour scheme which co-ordinates with the cabbages. Plant a 80

50cm / 20inch pot with four large ornamental frilly cabbages surrounding a central spiky one, to give some height to the display. Then choose a smaller pot (38cm / 15inches) and plant one frilly ornamental cabbage surrounded by pink and purple winter-flowering pansies. Finally plant a small pot (25cm / 10inches) with a mixture of hardy
cyclamen and white pansies. The resulting display will give you pleasure through November, December and January.
Tips
Select a frostproof container because these pots need to withstand wintery conditions. The most dependable pots are made of fibreglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, or stone. Most terracotta will crack in cold temperatures, but some glazed varieties are frost-proof. Use a good general-purpose compost. There are mixes specifically made for use in
containers, which provide the essential drainage that plants living in pots need. Make sure you place plenty of drainage material in the bottom of the pots. A good compost will contain enough slow release fertiliser to maintain the plants for several weeks during autumn and winter. If they still going strong as winter turns to you can give them a bit of a feed, but by
February or March you will want to think about replanting your pots with spring bedding. Think about gravel – I like to use a layer of gravel over the soil of my winter pots for several reasons. It gives the planted pots an attractive finish, keeps rain from splashing back on to the plants, provides some insulation for the soil and reflects light and warmth in any winter sun thus creating a little microclimate in which the plants will be happier. Water as needed unless the soil in the container is frozen. Do not water frozen pots because the plants are unable to absorb the water.
Happy gardening!

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
Murder mystery stories have been popular for centuries. However, I would say that you have probably never come across a murder mystery story quite like this. Debut author, Stuart Turton, admits to being inspired by the novels of Agatha Christie, but this is far from the likes of Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot. Set in a large country house in the early 20th century our protagonist wakes up in the middle of a wood. He is not wearing his own clothes and he soon realises that he is not in his own body.
Confused by what is going on he hears a gun shot and stumbles his way through the wood to Blackheath House. He is greeted by a man who calls him Sebastian Bell, but this name means nothing to him. Eventually he is visited by a mysterious man in a plague doctor’s mask. Our protagonist is called Aidan Bishop and he has until the end of the day to solve a murder. If he fails then the day will start all over again, but this time Aidan will not be Sebastian Bell. He will live the same day over in eight different ‘hosts’ and so he has eight days to solve the murder of Evelyn Hardcastle. Evelyn has been murdered hundreds of times. Part Agatha Christie, part Quantum Leap, this novel will keep you guessing with plot twists appearing throughout. Oh, and expect to feel confused: Turton has done a
94
www.towncriermagazine.com
stunning job of weaving the eight different days together. Just go with it and enjoy the journey!
Enchanted Palace by Rosie Banks
It is clear from the minute you look at this book who it is aimed at. A pink and sparkly cover welcomes young readers into the world of ‘The Secret Kingdom’. This is the first instalment of this successful series of books that follow the adventures of best friends Ellie, Summer, and Jasmine. As the book begins, the three friends are helping their teacher run a stall at their local jumble sale. As they are packing up, they find a strange-looking locked wooden box. Too late to sell it they take it home with them to try and open.
What happens when they do shows them a world they never knew existed: The Secret Kingdom. King Merry needs their help. His wicked sister, Queen Malice is plotting to destroy the kingdom and turn it from a joyful place, full of unicorns, fairies, and mermaids, into a dull and dreary land, making everyone as miserable as she is. Can Ellie, Summer, and Jasmine, solve the riddles that will let them save the Secret Kingdom from the Queen? Join them on an adventure of a lifetime, riding on the backs of the royal swans and rainbow slides. By Willow Coby
