The Fair is now in its twentieth year and is a well-established event in the charitable and shopping calendar. It is an ideal opportunity to meet friends and family for coffee or light lunch while browsing amongst the stalls selling those items that cannot be bought on the high street or on-line. The Fair is being held over the half term week so there will be lots of activities in which children and young people can participate. The headline charity being supported by the Fair this year is Home-Start who are the main organisers of the event. They help families with young children deal with whatever life throws at them. Marie Curie who provide emotional and practical support and guidance to anyone diagnosed with a terminal illness are the main national charity supported by the Fair. Four other local charities will also benefit; Longfield Hospice support adults with life-limiting illness from diagnosis onwards and the Gloucestershire Royal Intensive Care Unit provide care for patients who require more advanced therapies and support that is not possible on the general wards of the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. A unique aspect of the project is the offering of project engagement workshops, where people can choose to get involved with the delivery of their project. Chelsie and Nick are experienced in working with people with a range of mental health issues and see the benefit of people spending more time in nature, encouraging people to feel more connected with the space and therefore feel a sense of pride in the creation. It is more ethical - When you shop at local butchers, bakers, farm shops and green grocers, it is likely that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short field-to-fork journey. As a bonus it means the food is likely to contain more nutrients and have less packaging You support local entrepreneurs - Head for your local artisan market. These help foster the talents of the next generation of British designers and retailers. There is a constant turnover of new products, and sellers listen to customers' demands. From food to fledgling clothing designers there will be something for everyone. You help to build your local community Bookshops, cafes and craft shops often drum up custom by hosting events, from reading groups to knitting clubs and children's events. If local businesses are not supported, these fun local groups tend to disappear too. You might get a better deal or some good advice - Local independent businesses can use their discretion to reward regular custom. Butchers will give advice on cooking times, and how large a joint you might need to feed a family get-together, with some leftovers. Get to know your local traders. By Tom Hancock

Chippenham volunteers hope to raise awareness of a local wildlife haven with the installation of a new information board.
Wildlife HAVEN birds, butterflies and caterpillars which can often be seen in the meadow, which we hope will encourage parents and children to look out for the species while walking along the paths.” CEO Phil Tansley of CBLC said: “The trustees and staff thank the volunteers at BMWG for their continued hard work in maintaining this important meadow. “The charity prides itself in promoting open spaces for the public to get closer to nature while conserving natural land that is being lost to development or neglected.”

The Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group have provided the eyecatching display at the entrance to the former Blackcross Field. Located on the southern bank of the River Avon, across the blue bridge at the end of Monkton Park, the field was neglected until it was bought by the Chippenham Borough Lands Charity in 2000. Local volunteers established the BMWG in 2003 and have been maintaining it ever since. A hedgerow of native trees and shrubs has been planted, together with a copse, and the meadow itself has been repopulated with wildflowers. The new information board – funded by the CBLC - includes a map and a short history of the meadow, together with photographs of some of the species which can be spotted 16

THE BAYDONS MEADOW WILDLIFE GROUP
Chairman Julia Brotherton said: “More than 90 per cent of the UK’s wildflower meadows have been lost in the last 100 years so restoring Baydons Meadow is vitally important, but there are still so many people in Chippenham who don’t realise they have such a wonderful amenity on their doorstep. “Our previous information board was looking quite old and faded, so we hope the new replacement will attract more interest. It’s bright and colourful and features lots of details on the group and our various activities throughout the year." “We particularly like the photographs of some of the

The BMWG has around 20 volunteers aged from their 20s to their 70s, with a variety of backgrounds from teachers and software developers to retired nurses and professors. They take part in hedge-laying, hay-raking, coppicing, mowing and weeding, as well as planting thousands of flowers and bulbs. Today the meadow provides the ideal environment for a wide range of butterflies, dragonflies, birds, bats, mice, voles, frogs and toads. Otters have also been reported along this stretch of the river. The Baydons Meadow Wildlife Group meets at least once a month, usually on the first Sunday from 10.30am. Clarissa Reilly, partner and designer at Digger & Mojo, near Pewsey, says old is still new when it comes to furniture…
“This autumn, the trend in antique furniture continues, with brown furniture returning to fashion. Instead of using mahogany or oak throughout, interior designers are easing antiques back in, recommending
using one or two pieces per room. For example, a small oak lowboy acting as the perfect small console in a hallway, or a large mahogany chest of drawers in an otherwise neutral toned bedroom. As well as the handsome look of a Georgian piece you get the wonderful craftsmanship and history of a piece. All in an attractive item with larger drawers and better storage than something from a modern furniture store which would have a much shorter shelf-life!

“Navy and dusky old-fashioned pinks are also all the rage. For a quick and easy on-trend update, try a plain coloured velvet statement chair.
"My number one tip for home design/decorating is – you have to live with it. Go with your heart and what styles and colours you like and don’t think you have to have something just because other people are having it or it’s popular. You have to live with it so, in my opinion, there is no point in investing money in a project which is not ‘you’.”

Have you ever fancied the idea of a wood burning stove for your cosy snug or open planning living space? Do you want to enjoy the feel of a fire warming up your living room and creating a focal point in your home? John Williams Heating Services, based in Chippenham and working across North Wiltshire, install and service wood burning stoves as an accredited supplier with Worcester Bosch. When thinking about having a woodburning stove there are some questions you may wish to consider - and which any credible supplier should be able to answer. These might include: Does my home need to have a chimney? Stoves can be installed in homes with or without a chimney, however a flue is needed to safely remove the smoke, hot gases and other by-products created when wood burns. The John Williams Heating Services team can advise on how this can be achieved. What can I burn in the stove? It’s important the wood has less than 20% moisture. Any higher and it will not generate as much heat, create particle build up in the flue or chimney and blacken the glass of the door. Be aware many materials can give off dangerous fumes indoors and generate harmful environmental emissions. Do not use painted, varnished, glued or pressure treated wood, driftwood or engineered wood such as MDF. Do I need planning consent or building regulation approval? Fitting, altering or replacing an external flue or chimney, or having work done which affects a chimney, is likely to need building regulation approval. Planning consent is not normally required as long as certain conditions are met, John Williams Heating Services can advise on this. How much thought do you give your couch day-today? Unless you plan to replace it soon, probably not very much. Have you ever wondered how we ended up with the threepiece suite? By Tracey Anderson
Sofsoa good
The story is a 20th Century one. The key to its success is wrapped up in functionality and cost. As the middle and working classes moved out of slums and into their own homes, they needed furniture. The new homes were compact, with small rooms, totally unsuited to the heavy mahogany pieces of the large 'society' houses, and this type of furniture would have been beyond the financial reach of most ordinary people anyway.
Style gurus of the period, such as Stijl in Holland, Gropius and the Bauhaus group in Germany created designs that were cutting edge yet still suited to the functionality of the new era. Although these designer pieces were still only affordable by the wealthy elite, manufacturers began to adapt designs for a mass market. Expensive coverings such as leather and silk were replaced by modern materials such as rexine, which had a The three-piece suite's popularity dramatic effect on the price. It was Habitat and IKEA that changed the concept of the three-piece suite, with their modular systems that could be made to fit any space, in a variety of fabrics. Pieces no longer had to match, so you could express your personality through your sofa choice.
The modular sofa wasn't actually invented by Habitat or Ikea. It was invented by an American designer named Harvey Probber in 1944 though it didn't go mainstream until the 1970s. G Plan, which designed early UK versions, led the way with their 1971 Duo range. According to a 1979 article in the US magazine Interior Design, Probber's invention was "...one of the most influential developments in contemporary furniture design". These days we nearly all have some variation on the original three-piece suite in our homes, and its difficult to see what might ever replace it. I think I’ll go and sit on mine with a good book.

Anyone for
GOLF? GOLF is one of the most popular games around, suited to all ages and with options to match all budgets, from municipal courses to high-end, exclusive clubs. Here in Wiltshire, we have around 30 courses. It’s hardly a surprise – our gently undulating landscape and stunning vistas offer the perfect spot for a round of golf.
Vicar

The oldest in the county is Kingsdown Golf Club, near Corsham, which was founded in 1880. Professional golfer John Allan, of Westward Ho! Golf Club, wrote in 1880: “After a careful inspection of the Kingsdown Golf links… I have no hesitation in saying that… the turf is good, there are plenty of hazards, and each hole is interesting.” To this day, it remains a muchloved course, playable all year round (it only shut for two days in 2017, due to snow). A variety of memberships are available, including for the under-17s and students. There is also an introduction to golf package for absolute beginners. One of the best courses in the county has to be Bowood Golf & Country Club. Regularly listed in the top places to play in the UK, it is set within 2,000 acres of parkland and is widely considered one of architect Dave Thomas’ finest achievements. There is also a luxury hotel and spa, perfect for winding down after a game. Throughout August, Bowood is offering a special deal, which is £45 for tea/coffee and a bacon roll, 18 holes of golf, a nearest pin and longest drive competition and a one-course meal in the Brasserie. The offer is for a minimum of 12 people. Groups of 16 or more can enjoy a complimentary Beat The Pro competition, worth £150. North Wilts Golf Club, on the Downs near Marlborough, dates back to 1890 and is renowned for its beautiful scenery and warm welcome. It has also hosted a number of national and regional competitions. Its fees are reasonable and it offers excellent catering – and there’s no need for tee bookings, making it easy to play golf here. New members are particularly welcome and the club has a busy diary for all members, including ladies, seniors and juniors.
Broome Manor Golf Complex in Swindon is one of the youngest clubs in Wiltshire, having been founded in 1977 and prides itself on supporting women’s golf and even has its own Ladies of the Manor newsletter featuring reports on ladies’ championships and other news. It is hosting this year's Wiltshire Autumn & Lumley Ladies’ County Foursomes competition on September 3. The entry fee is £50 per pair, closing date for entries in August 7 and entry is via www. wiltshiregolf.org. Individual and group lessons are available for those just learning, while its Tiny Tigers section helps children as young as five perfect their swing. As part of the HSBC Golf Roots initiative, the club actively engages with schools and young people’s organisations to help youngsters get into the game.
included Edward VIII when he was Prince of Wales. Woodbridge Park Golf Club, in Brinkworth, is offering a number of special deals throughout the summer, such as nine or 18 holes at just £9 per player on Mondays (except bank holidays). It is a friendly, relaxed club with a sociable atmosphere. If you’re interested in having a go but don’t want to spend a fortune, why not head to Coate Water Country Park in Swindon? There is an 18-hole pitch & putt, 18-hole mini golf and nine-hole putting green. Clubs are included in the price of just £4 and it’s £1 for two balls. Pitch and Putt is open daily from 10am to dusk, until November 1.
One of its most famous players is David Howell, a member of the winning European Ryder Cup team in 2004 and 2006. For spectacular views, head to Ogbourne Downs Golf Club. Located between Swindon and Marlborough, this downland course is fast draining and always open. It was designed by five-time Open Championship winner JH Taylor and is set in 200 glorious acres. On September 4, the club will be hosting the Men's Seniors Open for the over 55s. Entry is £14 (or £20 with a one-course meal) and includes free coffee and a bacon bap on arrival. More than £1,000 in prizes is up for grabs. E ntry is via the website at ogbournedowns.co.uk. Marlborough Golf Club, with its stunning views of the Downs, welcomes corporate bookings with a combination of conference rooms and a chance for networking on the fairway – ideal for a company away day. The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2018
Ingredients:
750g/1lb 10oz Bramley apples, peeled, cored, quartered and sliced 1½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ unwaxed lemon, zest only 2 tsp lemon juice 100g/3½oz golden caster sugar 75g/2½oz raisins 95g/3½oz butter 40g/1½oz white breadcrumbs 6 large sheets filo pastry 1 tbsp icing sugar
Method:
DELICIOUS Apple Strudel
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. Mix the quartered apples with the cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 20g/¾oz butter and fry the breadcrumbs until golden-brown, then add these to the apple mixture. Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet of the filo and brush with some of the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all the filo. Layering the pastry with the melted butter helps to create flaky layers.
Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 40-45 mins Serves: 6-8
September brings a glut of apples. Make the most of them with this delicious strudel recipe.
Place the filling along the length of the pastry along one side about 2-3cm/1in from the edge. Using the tea-towel to help you, roll the pastry up to enclose the filling. Tuck the ends in and roll the strudel seamside down onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden-brown. Leave to cool to room temperature and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or custard. The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2018

Here is one of their seasonal favourites…
Add a further third of the meringue to the mixture and gently fold through until incorporated, add the final third of meringue and fold through gently until combined. Place the mixture in your tin and tap once on the worktop to remove any large bubbles. Place in the oven at 160c and bake for 45–55 minutes until risen and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Remove from the oven and place the tin upside down on a rack or similar and leave until cold. Remove from the tin and cut into four even thickness layers.
For the frosting Place the orange into the bowl of your food processor or similar with the ‘S’ blade and blitz until smooth. Add the margarine and blitz again until combined, remove from the blender and place in a bowl, add the icing sugar gradually, whisking as you go until you have a smooth creamy frosting. Lay the base layer from the cake on a board or plate or the base from the baking tin, spread an even layer of the frosting over the top of the sponge,

add a second layer of sponge and another layer of frosting, continue until you have four layers. Spread a layer of frosting around the outside and put a plate or another cake tin base on top, turn the cake over and remove the plate or cake tin base from what is now the top of the cake. Spread a thin layer of frosting over the top and then pipe 14 rounds of frosting - 1 for each portion, use the bowl of a teaspoon to flatten and swoosh the icing towards the middle Add a further ring of icing balls and repeat the flattening and swooshing. BOOKReview 1
'‘Into the Water’ by Paula Hawkins
For those of you that enjoyed Hawkins’ debut novel ‘The Girl on the Train’ this is another best-seller bound to be transferred to the big screen. ‘Into the Water’ is also a psychological thriller centred on the death of a woman. Jules didn’t pick up the phone when her sister Nel called. Now Nel is dead. The regret of not answering her plea for help is mixed with trepidation, returning to The Old Mill House will bring back memories and dark secrets long forgotten. The range of diverse characters leads you to examine relationships more than individuals. The author’s style dislocates the reader, using different characters perspectives to relay half-truths and unreliable memories. Hawkins makes you work at figuring the veracity of the story, throwing you off balance in a narrative flow full of the fascinating undercurrents and rip-tides of a small-town community. Published by Black Swan ISBN 1784162248
2
‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio
Palacio tugs on the heartstrings as Auggie encounters ignorance, intolerance and bullying and moments of joy, humour and enlightenment. It’s an enjoyable book to read with older children and one that raises issues and teaches empathy and compassion. We should all see the world from Auggie’s point of view. Published by Corgi Children ISBN 0552565970
3
‘The Girlfriend’ by Michelle Frances
A thrilling debut novel about a mother, a son, his girlfriend and the consequences of a lie told in desperation. Laura has a wonderful home, long marriage, successful career and a grown son Daniel, smart, kind and handsome. He meets Cherry, a determined girl of dubious past and gleaming future. Like a magpie, she sees Laura’s shiny life and wants everything in it. The dynamics of the females in this relationship are twisted, a kind of domestic darkness played out on a believable backdrop of upper class Kensington and council house Croydon. A chilling account that will make you value your relationships with your in-laws, the fast pace and compelling drama will keep you reading until the wee hours. Published by Pan ISBN 150982152X
I’d recommend reading this before seeing the blockbuster movie starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson. The story is told from the perspective of Auggie Pullman, a boy born with a facial disfigurement who attends school for the first time. “I won’t describe what I look like, whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.” The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2018

Bafta and Olivier award winning actress Sheridan Smith now has a record deal. The star of stage and screen signed the recording contract with East West Records, which is owned by Warner Music and is home to such names as Jools Holland, Robert Plant and Bette Midler. "It has been an ambition since a child to record my own album so I'm incredibly excited to be recording some of my favourite songs," she said in a statement. Sheridan comes from a musical family. Her great-great-grandfather, Benjamin Doubleday, a respected banjo player in Yorkshire later played as a trio with his daughters. Performing since she was a child Sheridan sang alongside her parents Colin and Marilyn, who performed as country music duo The Daltons. They toured the working men's clubs near their home in north Lincolnshire. Her father died in 2016, aged 80, having lost his battle against cancer. In 2015 she received an OBE for services to drama, awarded by Prince William. Though she never trained 68
at drama school, between 1995 and 2001 Sheridan was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre, performing lead roles in productions including Into the Woods and Pendragon. She made her West End debut in a National Youth Music Theatre production of Bugsy Malone and has performed in musicals Little Shop of Horrors and Funny Girl. She won two Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde in 2011 and Best Performance in a Supporting Role as Doris in a revival of the play Flare Path in 2012. Recently she has been nominated for the Best Actress in a Musical award for her work in Funny Girl. Her first taste of fame came in 1999 when she played Emma, Ralph Little's girlfriend, in hit TV comedy The Royle Family alongside Ricky Tomlinson and the late Caroline Aherne. Two years later she could be found playing Janet in the long-running series Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps until her departure from the show in 2009. There have been many other projects from an episode of ITV's The Royal to The Lenny Henry Show. She featured as Rudi in the second and third series of the BBC Three sitcom Gavin & Stacey. Sheridan guest starred in the Christmas 2008 episode of Lark Rise to Candleford. Her appearance in The Moorside, which chronicled the notorious kidnapping of nine year-old Shannon Matthews in 2008 saw Sheridan pile on the pounds for her role as Julie.
The Town Crier Magazine I SEPTEMBER 2018
Then she had to lose it for future roles. In 2014, she appeared in the ITV crime drama The Widower as first wife of serial killer Malcolm Webster. She featured in the TV series Who Do You Think You Are? and played Cilia Black in the three-part ITV drama series Cilia. In 2017, it was announced that she would star in the television adaptation of children's bestseller book written by David Walliams, Ratburger, as the Evil Step-mum Sheila. It must have been going well because David invited her to his 46th birthday party in September 2017 when dating American model Graham Nation. Aged four Sheridan learned to dance and was singing by the time she was seven years old. Her brother Damien is lead singer of the band, The Torn. Sheridan's oldest brother Julian tragically died from cancer in 1990 aged 18. Sheridan appears in the 2018 feature film The More You Ignore Me based on the novel written by Jo Brand in which she stars as main character Gina. Tim Saunders is an author, journalist and businessman. He meets celebrities, goes on holiday and road tests cars.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) is a global organisation which works through grassroots - and one of those is in the Devizes constituency. CCL wants to bring about a climate change-busting law carbon fee and dividend. It works by charging fossil fuel companies a fee for the pollution caused by oil, coal and gas and giving the money back to UK citizens. Every adult in the UK would get a payout while children would get half. So - unlike duty at the petrol pump - the average UK resident would not be punished in their purse while the cost of greenhouse gas-causing fossil fuels increase. But it would make clean energy alternatives - such as electric cars - much cheaper
by comparison, and therefore more attractive. The Devizes constituency group follows the global CCL method - raising awareness and support by writing to and meeting their MP, taking stalls at events, meeting different organisations and companies, and writing press and magazine articles and letters. Luckily for Devizes, the local
MP is Claire Perry who has an influential government position as minister of state for energy and clean growth. The group meets at 7.30pm on the last Tuesday of each month, currently at The Lamb, Marlborough. If you would like to attend, contact Louisa Davison on 01672 811515 or marlborough@ citizensclimatelobby.uk. Visit citizensclimatelobby.uk
The first Town Centre community Automated External Defibrillator (AED) has now been fitted. The AED is located in a unit on the side of the Town Hall in Borough Parade. It will be kept in a durable locked cabinet accessed by calling 999 and quoting a unique location code displayed on the cabinet. Cllr Teresa Hutton, Chair of the Amenities, Culture and Leisure Committee said; “This Defibrillator is vital to the Town Centre and offers a lifesaving facility. In an emergency situation call 999 and quote the location code which is shown on the front of the casing and it will be unlocked immediately.” Although the Town Council has a number of Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) in various locations such as the Town Hall, John Coles Park and London Road Cemetery, they are not accessible 24 hours a day when facilities are closed. We will also be fitting accessible AED’s at Stanley Park and John Coles Park. 74

Baby Loss
MALMESBURY JOINS IN NATIONAL RECOGNITION OF
On Saturday the 8th September 2018 at 3.30pm, Malmesbury Abbey in Wiltshire will hold the ninth in a set of national remembrance services for people who have experienced baby loss, whether during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy. Nearly 20 services will be held around the UK, allowing bereaved parents, families and friends to join together in acknowledging and remembering babies that have gone too soon. The services are organised by The Mariposa Trust, which held its first service in 2012, and celebrated its 100th service at the end of 2017 in Westminster, London. The charity now provides support that reaches over 50,000 people each week through it’s 6 divisions offering support through baby loss, pregnancy after baby loss, fertility, adoption and more. The charity was founded by Zoe and Andy Clark-Coates, who sadly suffered the loss of 5 babies. They saw that there was an extreme lack of support available to parents like them, and so decided to start the ‘Saying Goodbye’ services. Now 5 years on, the charity holds Cathedral services in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, France and the US, and is looking to expand these further in 2018 and beyond. Sadly baby loss affects around 1 in 4 pregnancies each year in the UK, with nearly 700 babies lost each day. When parents go through the devastating loss of a baby, whether during pregnancy,
at birth or in infancy, they often feel isolated and unable to process the overwhelming grief and trauma that miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal and early years loss brings. The services allow people to stand with others who have experienced the similar trauma of baby loss, and collectively acknowledge and remember each life lost. The services are open to people of faith or no faith, whether people have lost recently or decades ago, and welcome not only parents, but also the extended family and friends. The services are uplifting and moving events filled with music, poems, acts of remembrance and more, and have been attended by countless thousands of people, who have found healing and solace by attending.
love were allowed, shared and understood.” Zoe Clark-Coates commented “We invite anyone who has gone through or been affected by baby loss, to join us for this special event. Come and join with others who have been through a similar expereince, in remembering all those who have gone too soon, because every baby matters!”
One of the many attendees said this about her experience of attending a service: “The Saying Goodbye service gave me the time and space to formally recognise all of my babies and the experience of being with people who just knew how it felt was a real strength. The loss of a baby by miscarriage is never formally recognised by ceremony - no funeral service is held, no date is noted, no names are recorded. As I stood with other parents and proudly rang the bell for my 14 babies, I felt unbearable sadness but also a great privilege in being able to properly celebrate their existence. For the first time ever I felt my tears of grief, loss and

CANADA NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR
S
o this is where peace and quiet have been hiding out !
NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR, CANADA
Forget about modern life and discover a little piece of mind under the big sky of this big land. John Cabot dropped anchor here in 1497 and later fishermen came by the boatload. They painted their houses in bright shades of lime green red, yellow and aquamarine, with paint left after painting their fishing boats.
Its all about the fishing here in the cute little fishing villages, along with the fresh air and stunning scenery. I was so lucky to experience this magical place recently. With a direct flight from London Heathrow of just over 5 hours, you could be having dinner in St John’s after enjoying a cool Iceberg Beer in O’Rielly’s Pub whilst tapping your foot to the local gents playing their fiddles, flutes and bodhran – it’s all about the music! St John’s has so much to offer – Signal Hill Historic Site – Quidi Vidi Village and Plantation – Cape Spear Lighthouse (next stop Ireland) – Petty Harbour – The Rooms cultural space – Johnson GEO Centre – Botanical Gardens, all alongside the friendliest of locals. We then travelled north to Trinity (approx. 3.5 hours on excellent roads) where we were taken out into the bay in a zodiac in search of
86
whales – no disappointment there! They all came out to play, all 20 plus of them, along with the puffins, eagles, gannets, guillemots, kittiwakes and shearwaters – breathtaking, all 5 hours ! We then travelled further north to Port Rexton to stay overnight at the amazing Fishers Loft. Our tour finished in Bonavista where we glimpsed an iceberg – now all my boxes had been ticked! So, if you are looking for big skies, rugged coastlines, wildlife, hiking trails, lighthouses, whales, peace and quiet and the warmth of the local people ……… Call me – I can get you there ……….

Nature’s Harvest www.rspb.org.uk
As summer meets autumn, the wildlife around us begins to change: nature is ready to put on a show. Leaves switch from green to amber, copper and bronze. Hedgerows are studded with colourful fruit: shiny black elderberries in drooping bunches, scarlet hips and haws, and glossy dark blue sloes. Trees are laden with nuts and seeds in a variety of shapes, from chestnuts in prickly cases to sycamore seeds with their helicopter wings. For these plants, it’s time to sow the next generation. For hungry birds and animals, it’s time to feast. Some of our mammals hibernate and will be gorging themselves on fruit and seeds. Even those that don’t spend the winter snoozing need to build up enough fat to see them through until spring. Bank voles and wood mice will munch through as many hazelnuts and blackberries as they can get their paws on. Badgers will snuffle their way along the hedge, snacking on this seasonal banquet, as they too need to put on plenty of weight. Insects also need the sugars from ripe fruit, and you may see wasps, butterflies and other minibeasts gathering wherever there’s enough sweetness.
Some animals and birds plan ahead for the colder months. Jays, colourful but shy woodland birds, can be seen flying back and forth carrying acorns, which they’ll hide in holes in trees or bury in the ground. Coal tits will gather smaller seeds and store them in a variety of places. Squirrels also bury nuts, and those they forget will have the chance to sprout into the next generation of plants and trees. Birds also help plants spread when they eat berries: tiny seeds pass through their bodies and come out in their droppings. The juicy red berries decorating many shrubs and hedges now will be a lifeline for peckish birds in chilly weather. Mistle thrushes pick a suitable tree, perhaps a holly festooned with red berries, and defend it from any other feathered visitors. These might include raiding parties of thrushes, or in certain winters when food in their native
countries becomes scarce, exotic looking waxwings. The seed-eaters like chaffinches will also flock together: there’s safety in numbers and more pairs of eyes makes it easier to spot an opportunity to feed. When nature’s harvest festival comes to an end and the frosts arrive, times get tougher for wildlife. By making sure there are plenty of trees and hedges bearing fruit and seeds, gardeners, farmers and landowners can make a real difference for nature. Do you have space in your own patch for a crab-apple, hawthorn, holly, or rowan for a future autumn harvest?

GARDEN Themes HAVE A GO! Planting up your spring flowering bulbs is a lovely way to potter in the garden in the late summer sunshine. Pop in some daffodils, crocus and hyacinth by the end of the month in a place with good drainage and sun cover. Aim to plant in groups of at least six as the display will be so much more effective. Typically up to 50 bulbs will make an impressive show. Place the bulbs into the soil with their shoot facing upwards and space at least twice the bulb’s width apart.
TOP TIP Dig up remaining potato crops before the slugs get to them. All crops should be gathered by mid-October. Lift them on a dry day and allow potatoes to surface dry on the soil for a few hours. Handle gently to prevent bruising.
JOBS FOR September
September is the perfect month to start getting ready for Spring. Plant up your spring bedding such as sweet Williams and pansies. Buy spring-flowering bulbs. Go for ones that are firm and plump and show no signs of mould. Plant them as soon as possible so that they can start putting down roots. Keep deadheading to keep your containers in shape right to the end of the summer. Lift and clump your perennials and prize apart with two forks. Make sure each piece has leaves and roots.

SUBARU iMPREZA AUTO BIOGRAPHY
The fifth incarnation of the Subaru Impreza brings four-wheel-drive grip within reach of buyers who don’t fancy an SUV.
It is an Astra-sized hatchback with a symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system coupled to 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol Boxer units. I drove the higher powered 2.0-litre. What’s intriguing about the new Impreza is that it is the first motor to be launched in Britain on Subaru’s fresh Global Platform – the pillar of all its future models. There is nothing stirring about the latest Impreza's silhouette, but the interior is better than the former model’s. The quality of plastics and finishes have been enhanced, while the cabin is wider and offers more rear legroom. Maximum cargo
92
capacity has also been boosted by 10 litres.
respectable, even if the levels of tyre rumble are a touch too much.
The cabin houses lots of kit, too, with safety being the new Impreza’s selling point. The car is fitted with EyeSight technology – a camera-based system that scans the way ahead for other road-users. It is more accurate than conventional camera and sensor arrangements, continually producing 3D images and identifying specific objects – rather than just reacting to unknown obstacles.
Handling-wise, the Impreza corners with hardly any body lean. The steering is well-weighted, and the grip is incredible, due to the allwheel-drive system.
Behind the wheel, the 2.0-litre powerplant isn’t mind-blowingly quick. The car pulls away briskly, but anything after this feels a tad lifeless, so you must plan your overtakes in advance. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) imitates an orthodox auto’s ratios. It works okay, but it does whine offensively. There’s no manual gearbox, as the intricate EyeSight gadgetry only functions with the CVT. So, when all's said and done, you need to work the engine like a dog to make real headway. Relax to a cruise, however, and the refinement is
The Town Crier Magazine | SEPTEMBER 2018
Alas, you will fork out for the Impreza’s traction talents when you fill the car with petrol. The 2.0-litre variant only returns 42.8mpg, meaning the Subaru is eclipsed on the efficiency front by many SUVs. But Subaru is happy with how safe its cars are. It is proud of its durability. It is proud of its slightly unexciting worthiness. And that's cool, for keeping a core brand of loyal buyers content, but it will do nothing to lure new customers from competing manufacturers. Still, if you want a family-sized hatchback, then the Impreza is a safe bet – in more ways than one.

Wessex Auction Rooms are excited to be hosting their second free valuation day in Sutton Benger at The Bell House Hotel on Wednesday 5th September from 11am-2pm. You might think you don’t have anything of value, but you just never know. Dig out those items you’ve been storing in the loft, or Grannie’s vases at the back of the cupboard you never did really like, the toys from your childhood you don’t know why you’re holding onto, inherited jewellery that just isn’t your style … whatever it is, bring it along to the Sutton Benger valuation day and meet the Wessex team who will be on hand to assess your items and offer advice, with the opportunity to enter your items into auction.
T
he members from The Men’s Shed in Calne have crafted a beautiful wooden prayer tree for St Mary’s Church. Many prayers have been written on leaves and added to the tree over the last few months and periodically these prayers are placed on the altar during a Eucharist service. We would now like to share our tree with you and plan to take it to Phelps Parade on Saturday 29th September from 10-12 noon. Come and admire the handiwork that has gone into creating it, reflect a while in the midst of our bustling town and, if you wish, write a prayer and add it to the tree.
For more information please call the office on 01249 720888 or email enquiries@wessexauctionrooms.co.uk

In the event of very wet and windy weather which would damage the tree, St Mary’s Church will be open instead. Nick Fog
Nick Fogg is a man of many talents: teacher, founder of Marlborough’s jazz and literature festivals, Shakespearean scholar, author, participant in the Middle East peace process… the list goes on. At 75, he is showing no signs of slowing down. Still a serving councillor on Marlborough Town Council and Wiltshire Council, he is working on several new books and is in the process of setting up a poetry festival for Marlborough.
So I was hooked from the beginning
of Middle East Peace, have any other remaining dreams?
These are not the only famous names Nick has encountered: along the way, he has known the likes of war poet and novelist Robert Graves, actors Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens and poet laureate Sir John Betjeman. So how does a humble school teacher end up getting so involved in the community?
My remaining ambition is to look for a new challenge, but also to fulfil my old challenges because you never fulfil what you’re doing properly. “I mean, the Middle East peace talks were really frustrating. We got a hell of a long way along the track but look at it – it’s still a bloody disaster. But if we hadn’t done what we did, I suppose things would have been worse.
In what is hoped will be the inaugural event, actress Dame Sian Phillips will read works by war poet Wilfred Owen at Marlborough Town Hall on November 4. It will mark 100 years to the day since Owen died - exactly one week before the end of the First World War. Nick believes the date of the reading (Dame Sian couldn’t make the centenary on November 11) is ‘providence’. And providence has certainly dealt Nick, who has twice been mayor of Marlborough, a lucky hand. He moved to Marlborough in 1978, with his schoolteacher wife Edwina, to teach RE at Marlborough College, where he remained until 1992. Between them, the couple have raised eight children. He hails from Stratford, which is where his love of Shakespeare, about whom he has written respected books, began. His mother ran a theatrical club and worked at the RST.
When I was growing up in Stratford, the actors were all around you, so you rubbed shoulders – you’d see Vivien Leigh walking down the street and Paul Robeson sitting in a local restaurant.
He is still involved in international affairs in his role as consultant to the InterAction Council of Former Heads of State and Government which looks at issues such as world medicine and water supplies. When asked to name his greatest achievement, his answer comes as a surprise.
“I’ve always believed one has to make one’s contribution but more than that, one enjoys being involved in the community. Not just politically but socially – one likes to meet people and do something for them.” His passion for involvement led to his founding the Marlborough International Jazz Festival, which earnt him an MBE for services to jazz, and the Marlborough Literature Festival. So does a man who has achieved so much, such as being involved in the report on the Dividends
Getting to the semi-finals of University Challenge, back in the 1960s when it was Bamber Gascoigne. It was when I was at Nottingham. I got fan mail, I was a good-looking boy in those days - I got proposals of marriage! The other thing was directing the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. That was pretty fantastic.
