The park’s overall theme connects the past and the present with a “Family Tree” look and feel, providing residents a space where they can connect with the Little Elm of the past. Currently, Cottonwood Park in Little Elm is a bit of a diamond in the rough. The park is mostly undeveloped, with only a few picnic tables and some prime fishing spots, but that’s all about to change as the park will soon be transformed into a shining crown jewel. In 2020, the Little Elm Town Council voted to approve a first round of updates to the 160-acre expanse to make it a draw for the region. Cottonwood Park features primitive hiking trails that will make you forget you’re in the city, particularly in the springtime when they are lush and green. The park also features the Cottonwood Sports Complex, complete with softball and baseball fields (reserved for league play) and a public playground. The park is also home to Cottonwood Creek Marina. The Cottonwood Marina, an award-winning marina with 339 covered and open wet slips, accommodates boats from 24 to 50 feet. The marina is privately owned and operated through a public-private agreement with the Town. The first phase of improvement to the park includes updating and expanding the park’s current gravel parking lot and adding restrooms. It also comprises pavilions and other areas designated for day use and picnicking, a waterside playground, and an open lawn for lawn games. “The first phase is about bringing Cottonwood Park up to the standards of our other parks, then building on to the park to add one-of-a-kind recreation amenities in the future,” says Chad Hyde, Director of Community Services. Also planned in the project is a neighborhood trail connection, allowing easier access for residents in adjacent areas. “Connectivity is an important part in our amenity planning; we strive to make our recreation areas reachable for nearby residents on foot or bike,” Hyde says. The plan for redevelopment, known as the Cottonwood Park Master Plan, also imagines future features such as a lookout tower, a ropes course, ziplining, scenic overlooks, boardwalks and a fishing pier. “The final product will be an amazing amenity for residents and visitors alike,” says Mayor Curtis J. Cornelious.

Special Events Family-fun events are what Little Elm does best. Little Elm is always in season and ready to celebrate with more than 10 events a year! “There are so many large families who come out to our events as yearly traditions, so we always want to keep setting the bar higher every year to give them the best experiences and make memories,” says Town of Little Elm Special Events Manager Alicia Gray. The Town hosts The Little Elm Craft Brew & Que, a lakeside craft beer and barbecue festival, in early June. This event features authentic Texas barbecue, beer and live country music. But this event isn’t just for the adults either; Little Elm takes pride in making every event fun for the whole family. So bring the kids out to Brew & Que to burn off some energy in the bounce houses in the Kid Zone! Another annual summer event, and the biggest one in Little Elm, is the July Jubilee held every Fourth of July. Beachgoers and boaters from all over the metroplex head to Little Elm Beach to celebrate the red, white and blue. Live music, vendors in the park, and the night closes with the best over-water fireworks show you have ever seen. Little Elm knows how to do a fireworks show and they blow it out of the water — no pun intended — year after year. In fact, the show is so great that they added a second one that can be viewed from the local high school. Many residents are given the option to see the fireworks show without even leaving their homes. July Jubilee isn’t the only event to see an iconic Little Elm fireworks show; fast-forward to Little Elm’s Annual Tree Lighting and Christmas Parade in December. Families line the sidewalks all down the Lakefront District™ to catch a glimpse of Santa and Mrs. Claus. Once the parade is over, everyone strolls into the park and huddles around the 30-foot tree awaiting the mayor and, of course, Santa! Then, with the help of the crowd, the countdown begins, and the tree is lit with music and an epic fireworks show to follow. “We want to make sure those who visit our events enjoy themselves and give them something to look forward to every year so that they keep coming back,” says Director of Community Services Chad Hyde. “I take pride in being able to give people the types of experiences that turn into their family traditions,” Hyde adds. There is fun going on all year round, from a Mardi Gras event and Eggtastic Egg Hunt in the spring, to the Autumn Fest carnival and Pumpkin Hollow in the fall! Visit www.lakefrontlittleelm.com to see when the next event is and plan your trip!

The Lakefront™?
Little Elm Craft Brew & Que Festival
I
f brews, barbecue and entertainment are just a few of your favorite things, then the Little Elm Craft Brew & Que Festival is for you! The first Craft Brew & Que event debuted in 2014 with only a handful of breweries and barbecue spots. After the tremendous success in year one, the event has grown to more than 50 breweries and barbecue vendors every year since. The backbone of the event is, of course, beer! Local, state and regional craft breweries are invited to sample their finest draughts while larger distributors represent national and international brews. Some brews have debuted at the festival, such as Backcountry Brewing Imperial Saison, Pale Ale and Amber. Backcountry made its Texas debut at Brew & Que 2015. Since the inception of the event, it was always important to Little Elm to support local vendors and breweries across D-FW and Texas. Every year, The Town partners with a local favorite, Margarita Hut, to be the event’s official concessionaire.
“Brew & Que is my favorite event. I love that we created a fun family day at a beer festival. There is something for all ages.” — Alicia Gray, Special Events Manager
Festivalgoers enjoying cold brews with friends
“Brew & Que is my favorite event. I love that we created a fun family day at a beer festival. There is something for all ages,” says Special Events Manager Alicia Gray. Contrary to typical beer festivals, the Craft Brew & Que Festival is open to all ages. The festival was actually the first family-friendly beer festival in Texas! There are bounce houses and face painting for the kids, and adults can enjoy different lawn games while sipping on a cold brew and enjoying a Texas summer afternoon. “We take pride in hosting a family-friendly craft beer festival. We want everyone to feel comfortable visiting Little Elm and experience all of the fun we have to offer,” says Chad Hyde, Director of Community Services.
Scan code below for more information.
Tickets go live April 1! Many of the beer and barbecue vendors have been with the festival since day one, including well-known names such as Deep Ellum Brewing Company and Community Beer Company, to name a few! Barbecue vendors such as Rod’s BBQ and Riverfront Barbeque have also been in attendance. Don’t worry, wine lovers — The Town also added a wine garden in 2021 and it will be a part of this year’s event, too. There is not a chance you will leave the event forgetting the delicious barbecue flavors at the festival. Not to be confused with a cook-off, the festival highlights traditional and exotic barbecue offerings from all over the region. Barbecue offerings are available for purchase at various prices. Of course, a good beer and food festival could not be complete without live music! Every year, the festival hosts Texas country bands to keep the party alive. This year’s lineup is Reckless Kelly, Mickey & the Motorcars and Grace Tyler. If beer is not your thing, don’t fret! Ciders, seltzers and margaritas are also available. One thing is for sure: No matter your age, you’re guaranteed to have a great time at the Little Elm Craft Brew & Que Festival! Want to attend? Tickets go on sale April 1, 2022.

wakeboarders catch a nice wave (or wipe out) and listen to live music. This spot also offers surfthemed cocktails such as the Cable Park Punch, Shred Ready Eddy and the Good Old Fashion Air. Just down the street at 3 Flights Up Taps & Tacos, diners can mix and match their craft beers with an equally inventive selection of tacos, such as the chicken shawarma, fried cauliflower, shrimp po’ boy, Caribbean beef barbacoa, and fish and chips. New additions to the menu include a gyro taco (it’s out of this world, y’all) and barbacoa nachos. Looking for something sweet? Tiff’s Treats® is now open in The Lakefront District™! Whether you are buying cookies for yourself or for others, we can assure you won’t be disappointed. Margarita Hut is another popular spot for thirsty Lakefront District™ visitors. Its tasty wine-based thirst-quenchers are made to travel. Margarita Hut offers to-go margaritas served in sizes as large as a gallon, with intriguing names and flavors such as the Lemon-tini, Blue Hawaiian and Hypnotic. The hybrid Beer-Rita, which combines the colorful frozen treat with a nice malt beverage, is another fine choice. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop also opened its first Little Elm location in The Lakefront™, and it has been bustling ever since, as patrons enjoy the patio and tacos, nachos and quesadillas. Craft Pies

L
ittle Elm is not only home to unique recreation amenities and outstanding special events, but it is also home to one-of-a-kind restaurants! Some are long-standing favorites of locals and visitors alike, while other new-to-the-scene spots are making waves.
One of those restaurants is Krab Kingz, a fast-casual, to-go restaurant serving Floridastyle seafood and boasting giant servings. Two sisters, Tawana Burton and Tanisha Edwards, own this spot, and it’s definitely the place for seafood lovers. “We wanted to bring the Krab Kingz franchise to Little Elm to provide fast-casual, fresh seafood to The Lakefront™ community,” Burton says. The menu includes catfish, shrimp, lobster tail and, like their name says, crab! The sisters also recommend that you don’t sleep on the shrimp
pasta, a ginormous portion of shrimp and pasta tossed in their house-made cream sauce and Parmesan cheese. It can easily serve two if you want to share, but we suspect you won’t! Krab Kingz aims at bringing the best seafood experience to the Town of Little Elm, and judging by the line out the door some days, it is. Burton is thankful for the community response to Krab Kingz. She says, “This is a great town! The community has welcomed us, and we are truly grateful for all the love and support. We are excited to be here and will continue to serve large seafood portions at an affordable price.” Little Elm is continually growing, including its restaurant options. Hurtado Barbecue, a Texas barbecue favorite, will be joining the Little Elm community in 2022. Fowl-N-Out opened in early 2022 and offers wings and catfish. Tinman Social, also opening in 2022, will provide full-service dining while you participate in all of their entertainment activities, such as bowling, darts and ax throwing. Craft Pies also recently opened for all of you pizza lovers at Little Elm Parkway and Eldorado Parkway.
Hula Hut
Speaking of pizza, you’re in even more luck. Coming soon to Little Elm is 575° Pizzeria. This Amarillo-based company is not your average slice shop; this concept pairs gourmet Neapolitan-style pies (cooked to perfection in brick ovens) with craft beer and wine. Jennette Espinosa, executive director of the Little Elm Economic Development Corporation, visited 575° and instantly knew it would be a Little Elm hit. “My campaign to bring them here started right after the first bite,” Espinosa says. Another favorite in Little Elm is Hula Hut, a casual lakeside Polynesian/Hawaiian Tex-Mex fusion spot. The original Hula Hut opened on Lake Austin 25 years ago and quickly became an Austin icon. Little Elm boasts the first and only non-Austin Hula Hut location and features pu pu platters, enchiladas and Shiner Bock fajitas. Hula Hut’s fame long stretches beyond the Texas capital, largely due to visitors and UT-Austin alums spreading the good word. Moreover, the Little Elm location duplicates many features of the original. The Hut’s tropical decor and funky tiki culture have migrated north intact, along with the original restaurant’s most prominent feature, a long porch that juts out over the water, offering lovely views of the lake — not to mention whimsical decor pieces, including a giant shark and a volcano. Next to Hula Hut is Towers Tap House, complete with a full bar and food menu as well as incredible views of the action at the Hydrous Wake Park next door. Diners can sip a craft brew while watching daring
Tiff’s Treats Are you looking for a burger among tacos and pizza? You got it. Hat Creek Burger Company opened in 2019 and has become a popular destination and featuring burgers, chicken, milkshakes and more. Built with families in mind, the playground is also popular among Little Elm’s youngest residents. Other favorites include Leo’s Brunch House, with an extensive breakfast and lunch menu that is sure to entice with breakfast skillets, eggs Benedict and chicken fried steak. Savory Kitchen Bar, one of Little Elm’s most popular spots, serves up brisket mac and cheese, tomahawk pork chops and incredible seafood dishes, and it also recently just opened for lunch. Little Elm’s booming bar and restaurant scene reflects the affection that visitors and residents alike have for this lakeside town, as well as the priority they place on good living and quality leisure time with family and friends.
Hurtado Barbecue Are you ready for some barbecue with a twist? Hurtado Barbecue is heading north to Little Elm, so get ready! This location will be just 42 miles north of its original spot in Arlington, Texas. Hurtado Barbecue is a family-owned business that began as a part of pop-up barbecue events. Today, it is a brick-and-mortar business with a cult following among barbecue lovers. It all started in 2018 when owner Brandon Hurtado hosted his first pop-up barbecue event at Division Brewing in Arlington, Texas. In 2019, he acquired a food truck. Hurtado Barbecue’s first brick-and-mortar business officially opened up in Arlington in February 2020. Hurtado Barbecue made the Top 50 Texas Bar-B-Q Joints in the 2021 Texas Monthly. Hurtado was attracted to bringing this new location to Little Elm due to Little Elm’s public beach, boat slips and other fun attractions. Hurtado Barbecue offers Central Texas-style barbecue with a Tex-Mex flair — you can get your favorites such as Texas prime brisket, ribs and sausage. Still, we recommend that you try barbacoa tostadas, birria tacos and street corn. Don’t forget to try the famous Texas twinkies, a brisket and pimento cheese stuffed jalapeno wrapped in bacon. Hurtado smokes more than 4,000 pounds of meat each week and offers savory sides such as its famous Hatch chile mac ‘n cheese, smoked elote and baked potato salad.
In addition to selling barbecue, Hurtado’s will also have a sausage production operation in its new location — and will ship nationwide. The new Little Elm location will seat around 130 people and feature a full bar and patio overlooking the lake. Hurtado’s current Arlington location is always busy with people from all over and has customers waiting outside as soon as it opens. Jennette Espinosa, executive director of the Little Elm Economic Development Corporation and Little Elm Chamber of Commerce, thinks the Little Elm location will also be booming. “This new location is exciting for the North Texas area since people from the Little Elm and Frisco area travel down to Arlington just for Hurtado,” Espinosa says. You can find this fantastic barbecue spot at 100 Hardwicke Lane starting this summer. Are you a barbecue aficionado? Then, satisfy all of your barbecue cravings at Little Elm’s Craft Brew & Que Festival on June 4, 2022! This family-friendly festival will highlight traditional and exotic barbecue offerings from all over the region, along with more than 60 breweries with more than 150 craft beers. There will also be live Texas Country music acts and a Kid Zone, making the Brew and Que fun for the entire family. Learn more at www.littleelmspecialevents.com.
