2021 Dallas Morning News Insert The Lakefront at Little Elm

With 66 miles of shoreline, Little Elm, Texas, is a town built near a lake and boasts of its “Lake Attitude.” But what is a Lake Attitude exactly?

T

he Town of Little Elm defines a “Lake Attitude” as laid-back, relaxed, chill, down-to-earth, no-stress and tons of fun. But here, it’s not just for summer; Little Elm strives to keep this vibe going — all year round. Little Elm — while mostly a commuter community, with its residents heading out along highways and byways — has focused on creating a warm, welcoming and relaxing environment for when its people return home. And for them, and visitors alike, it’s a place to enjoy and unwind. “Our focus is on making Little Elm a great place to live or visit,” Town Manager Matt Mueller says. “It’s laid back; there’s lots to do; and we have outstanding amenities and a relaxed, fun atmosphere.” To that end, the Town’s mission is to build on its unique lake opportunities and small-town charm and provide stakeholders with an unmatched quality of life. Things like the Little Elm Beach, the largest public beach in North Texas — complete with sand volleyball courts — helps residents and visitors dig in and relax in the sun. Additionally, Cottonwood Creek Marina, the Nautical Boat Club, DFW Surf with paddle boarding and kayaking, Lakefront trails and restaurants on the water help facilitate the chill, lakeside living vibe. “A lot of what we do centers around the lake —

from where we hold our special events to how we build our recreation amenities,” says Director of Community Services Chad Hyde. Little Elm’s philosophy has trickled down to its residents who are friendly and laid-back, live their lives on lake time and will never pass up a cold craft beer, margarita or sweet tea on a sunny patio. Not only do the people of Little Elm give off a Lake Attitude, but so do the businesses around town. If you catch yourself in The Lakefront™ District, the town’s destination district of recreation-based amenities and restaurants, you will probably come across more than one friendly face and maybe even make a new friend or two. You can escape to a lakeside patio for your next family dinner, lunch meeting or to just grab a cold one — beer or sweet tea. With an array of dining options, from sushi to tacos, there is something for everyone. Not only is The Lakefront™ District known for the amenities and activities to build your perfect summertime getaway, it is also home to special events — everything from a Cajun-themed 5K that promises fantastic lake views to the town’s Christmas celebration on the beach, complete with fireworks. So, the next time you’re looking for the perfect day in a local paradise, make your way to Little Elm and experience the Lake Attitude for yourself. You’ll likely find your way back soon, too, as you crave that Lake Attitude feeling again.

STAY ALL DAY

DFW Surf

WANT TO HIT THE BEACH, BUT DON’T WANT TO TRAVEL TO THE COAST?

Little Elm’s McCord Park is the place to be if you want to spend a full day outside. Entering Little Elm off FM-423, you will find this massive park full of fun for the whole family, including a large splash pad to cool off on a hot day and a dog park just a few steps away so your furry friend doesn’t miss out on the fun! The newest playground was also just installed between the splash pad and the dog park located off Witt Road. Just a short walk past all that fun, there’s a pond that’s great for fishing. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at disc-golf, McCord Park has that, too. So pack a picnic, grab the towels and don’t forget the dog!

That’s not a problem in Little Elm. Popular wake-surfing company DFW Surf draws inland water sports enthusiasts from across the metroplex, and founder Tyler Marshall is a big believer in community-building. He welcomes one and all, and his staff works with everyone from experienced wave riders who can’t get to the ocean as often as they’d like, to beginners looking to learn the ropes of surfing and paddle boarding. Marshall initially operated the DFW Surf Shop at Pier 121 Marina on Lewisville Lake. He then moved his teaching and rental operations to the Surf Shack at Little Elm Beach. He said this new location is the perfect match, thanks to Little Elm’s status as “a small town with a beachy vibe and the biggest public beach in North Texas.”

Changing ever still, Little Elm is adding a few new businesses to the mix very soon: a hotel, an entertainment venue and the second phase of a mixed-use multi-family development known as The District, from the developer Palladium USA International. The hotel, a La Quinta Del Sol Hotel by Wyndham, will allow visitors to stay and play in Little Elm’s Lakefront™ District. The hotel is a four-story, 47,325-square-foot space featuring 84 hotel rooms, a 600-square-foot meeting space, an outdoor pool and a bar on the top floor with architectural designs to capitalize on impressive lake views.

The entertainment venue, named Tinman Social House (in homage to the historic landmark, “Tin Man” water tower, where it will be located), is a two-story, 38,000-square-foot entertainment venue featuring boutique bowling lanes on multiple levels, a redemption arcade and arcade store. The venue will also host a full-service kitchen and bar with restaurant and bar seating on both levels. Unlike some of Little Elm’s outdoor amenities, the venue will be usable year-round. Executive Director of the Little Elm Economic Development Corporation, Jennette Espinosa, hopes this will bring in visitors even during the offseason. “We want to be able to attract visitors to the region throughout the year, not just when the weather is nice. Tinman Social House is a great way to do that and will be a great place for friends, families and date nights,” Espinosa says. Tinman Social House will also feature ping pong tables, ax throwing, cornhole, bocce ball and shuffleboard, as well as banquet and event rooms. The second phase of The District by Palladium is set to break ground this year, too. The project is 9.165 acres of multi-family development with 324 units between two buildings. The project, which expands the existing Villages at Lakefront development, consists of two four-story buildings. One building is a walk-up with surface-level parking, and the other is a wrapped product with a parking garage and sky bridge connecting to approximately

“We want to be able to attract visitors to the region throughout the year, not just when the weather is nice. Tinman Social House is a great way to do that and will be a great place for friends, families, and date nights” — Jennette Espinosa, Executive Director of the Little Elm Economic Development Corporation

“These elements are exciting additions to The Lakefront™ District and the Town of Little Elm overall. Residents have been asking for these amenities and options for several years, and we are thrilled to be able to deliver them now,” Espinosa says. Not far from these amenities is The Cove at The Lakefront™, a 42,000-square-foot indoor waterpark featuring a lazy river, slides, play structures and fun for all ages. There are several area parks and trails, as well as many unique restaurants. “There’s something for everyone in Little Elm,” Espinosa adds.

The Cove at The Lakefront™, is a 42,000-square-foot facility that offers residents and visitors the chance to swim, splash and relax — all year long.

T

he highly anticipated, 42,000-square-foot, The Cove at the Lakefront™ indoor waterpark is currently the most significant project on the Town of Little Elm’s agenda. Despite the unprecedented last year, the project has moved forward as planned, and its grand opening is upon us! The Cove at the The Lakefront™ is an impressive attraction that will be perfect for all ages, all year round! Next to the Little Elm Recreation Center, in the heart of the Lakefront™ District, this amazing amenity has been in the works for the past year, and the entire Town of Little Elm is eagerly awaiting its opening. “The Cove at the Lakefront™ packs in a ton of unique features, so there’s really something for all ages — and with a retractable roof, we can enjoy our amenities year-round. We are so excited to share The Cove at the Lakefront™ with our community,” says Elissa Malone, Aquatics Manager. Year-round usability was an essential factor when planning the facility. “The Cove at the Lakefront™ is not your average waterpark. We can close the roof so the fun doesn’t stop during a downpour or in the middle of winter,” Malone says. This facility highlights the only FlowerRider® Double within a 30-mile radius. This popular wave-surfing machine will be one of the first attractions to greet visitors when they enter the facility. Above it is

a Jumbotron, where FlowRider® users can view themselves on the big screen. Equipped with two fake-out water slides, a lazy river, a large play structure and a spray ground, this brand-new facility is sure to be a hit with the whole family. The Cove at the Lakefront™ will also be the ideal place for entertaining with party rooms, a large mezzanine terrace and cabanas available to rent; visitors can host everything from birthday and team parties to corporate events. The facility also boasts a concessions stand, The Snack Shack. Savory Kitchen, one of Little Elm’s most favorite restaurants, will be managing this feature and is sure to serve up some of their best dishes. “The Cove at the Lakefront™ is a great addition to Little Elm, and we believe it will draw people from all over the region to The Lakefront™ District. People will be able to visit and enjoy The Cove at the Lakefront™, dine at one of our great local restaurants and experience our other fantastic amenities,” says Executive Director of the Little Elm Economic Development

Corporation, Jennette Espinosa. The location of The Cove at the Lakefront™ was strategic — right in the heart of the growing and thriving Lakefront™ District. This destination district has quickly become the main draw to Little Elm. In addition to The Cove at the Lakefront™, the Lakefront™ also features the largest public beach in North Texas, exceptional parks and beautiful trails and several unique dining options. “The goal is to draw visitors from all over the metroplex to stay and play and enjoy all that Little Elm has to offer while increasing traffic to local businesses,” Espinosa says.

The backbone of the event is, of course, beer! Local, state and regional craft breweries are invited to sample their finest draughts while larger distributors represent national and international brews. Some brews have debuted at the festival, such as Backcountry Brewing Imperial Saison, Pale Ale and Amber. Backcountry made their Texas debut at Brew & Que 2015. Since the inception of the event, it was always important to Little Elm that they support local vendors and breweries across D-FW and Texas. Every year, they partner with a local restaurant, Hula Hut, to be the event’s official concessionaire.

“Brew & Que is my favorite event. I love that we created a fun family day at a beer festival. There is something for all ages,” says Special Events Manager Alicia Gray. Contrary to typical beer festivals, the Craft Brew & Que Festival is open to all ages. The festival was actually the first family-friendly beer festival in Texas! There are bounce houses and face painting for the kids, and adults can enjoy different lawn games while sipping on a cold brew and enjoying a Texas summer afternoon. “We take pride in hosting a family-friendly craft beer festival. We want everyone to feel comfortable visiting Little Elm and experience all of the fun we have to offer,” says Chad Hyde, Director of Community Services.

Scan the QR code below and save! Many of the beer and barbeque vendors have been with the festival since day one, including well-known names such as Bitter Sisters Brewing Company, Deep Ellum Brewing Company, Shannon Brewing Company and Community Beer Company, to name a few! Barbeque vendors such as Rod’s BBQ and Riverfront Barbeque have also been in attendance. There is not a chance you will leave the event forgetting the delicious barbeque flavors at the festival. Not to be confused with a cook-off, the festival highlights traditional and exotic barbeque offerings from all over the region. Barbeque offerings are available for purchase at various prices. Of course, a good beer and food festival could not be complete without live music! Every year, the festival hosts Texas country bands to keep the party alive. Acts have included famous artists Bleu Edmonson, Flatland Cavalry, Zane Williams and Brandon Rhyder. If beer is not your thing, don’t fret! Ciders, margaritas and wine are also available. One thing is sure: No matter your age, you’re guaranteed to have a great time at the Little Elm Craft Brew & Que Festival! Want to attend this year’s Craft Brew & Que Festival? One of those restaurants is Krab Kingz, a fast-casual, to-go restaurant serving Florida-style seafood and boasting giant servings. This spot is owned by two sisters, Tawana Burton and Tanisha Edwards, and it’s definitely the place for seafood lovers. “We wanted to bring the Krab Kingz franchise to Little Elm to provide fast-casual, fresh seafood to The Lakefront™ community,” Burton says. The menu includes catfish, shrimp, lobster tail, and like their name says, crab! The sisters also recommend that you don’t sleep on the shrimp

pasta, a ginormous portion of shrimp and pasta tossed in their house-made cream sauce and parmesan cheese. It can easily serve two if you want to share, but we suspect you won’t! Krab Kingz aims at bringing the best seafood experience to the Town of Little Elm, and judging by the line out the door some days, it is. “One of our keys to success has been to quickly adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re take-out or delivery, require masks, and strongly encourage social distancing,” Burton says. Burton is thankful for the community response to Krab Kingz, “This is an awesome town! The community has welcomed us and we are truly grateful for all the love and support. We are excited to be here and will continue to serve large seafood portions at an affordable price.” Kabuki Japanese Steak House offers authentic and delicious tasting sushi, hibachi grill and Asian favorites. Patrons can opt for classic sushi rolls including avocado rolls, California rolls and spicy tuna rolls; or choose house sushi specialties such

as the Sunset Roll filled with yellowtail tuna, salmon, crab, avocado and cucumber topped with a creamy wasabi sauce or the Mexicanese Roll, a delightful concoction of deep-fried jalapeños, cream cheese, spicy tuna, avocado and sriracha on top. Hibachi offers a fun show as your dinner is prepared, and options include everything from seafood to filet mignon. There are plenty of vegetarian options, too, if that’s your thing. To-go, dine-in and lakeside patio options are all available. “Kabuki is a great experience for date night and family dinners away from home. The hibachi show is entertaining, and the food is always delicious. You can also feast on decadent sushi rolls and enjoy flavored margaritas, wine, sake or beer. We hope to see you soon!” says Richard Pray, Kabuki property owner. Love pizza? You’re in luck. Coming soon to Little Elm is 575° Pizzeria. This Amarillo-based company is not your average slice shop. This concept pairs gourmet Neapolitan-style pies, cooked to perfection in brick ovens, with craft beer and wine. While you can always get pizza classics like pepperoni and cheese, 575° Pizzeria has about two dozen signature pies, including a Kamehameha with Asian ginger sauce, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, candied jalapeños, red onions, chicken, and Canadian bacon, and the Green Chile Cheeseburger, featuring a creamy mustard sauce, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, ground beef, green chiles, red onion, bacon, pickles, lettuce and diced tomatoes. The Phoebe, another signature option, is topped with olive oil, parmesan, artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, fresh basil and chicken. Jennette Espinosa, Executive Director of the Little Elm Economic Development Corporation, visited 575° last year and instantly knew that it would be a Little Elm hit. “My campaign to bring them here started right after the first bite,” Espinosa says. As if this wasn’t enough, 575° Pizzeria also features starters, salads (try their Signature Sundried Tomato Balsamic Vinaigrette!), calzones and desserts — including cannoli. Another favorite in Little Elm is Hula Hut,

Hibachi-style gourmet from Kabuki Japanese Steak House

a casual lakeside Polynesian/Hawaiian Tex-Mex fusion spot. The original Hula Hut opened on Lake Austin 25 years ago and quickly became an Austin icon. Little Elm boasts the first and only non-Austin Hula Hut location and features pu pu platters, enchiladas and Shiner Bock fajitas. Hula Hut’s fame long stretches beyond the Texas capital, largely due to visitors and UT-Austin alums spreading the good word. Moreover, the Little Elm location duplicates many features of the original. The Hut’s tropical decor and funky tiki culture have migrated north intact, along with the original restaurant’s most prominent feature — a long porch that juts out over the water, offering lovely views of the lake not to mention whimsical décor pieces, including a giant shark and a volcano. Next to Hula Hut is Towers Tap House, complete with a full bar and food menu as well as incredible views of the action at the Hydrous Wake Park next door. Diners can sip a craft brew while watching daring wakeboarders catch a nice wave (or wipe out) and listen to live music. This spot also offers surf-themed cocktails such as the Cable Park Punch, Shred Ready Eddy and the Good Old Fashion Air. Just down the street at 3 Flights Up Taps and Tacos, diners can mix and match their craft beers with an equally inventive selection of tacos, such as the chicken shawarma, fried cauliflower, shrimp po’boy, Caribbean beef barbacoa and fish and chips. New additions to the menu include a gyro taco (it’s out of this world, y’all) and barbacoa nachos. Margarita Hut is another popular spot for thirsty Lakefront™ District visitors. Their tasty wine-based thirst-quenchers are made to travel. Margarita Hut offers to-go margaritas served in sizes as large as a gallon, with intriguing names and flavors such as the Lemon-tini, Blue Hawaiian and Hypnotic. The hybrid beer-Rita, which combines the colorful frozen treat with a nice malt beverage, is another fine choice. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop also opened its first Little Elm location in The Lakefront™, and it has been bustling ever since, as patrons enjoy the patio and tacos, nachos and quesadillas. Are you looking for a burger among tacos, sushi and pizza? You got it. Hat Creek Burger Company opened in 2019. Featuring burgers, chicken, milkshakes and even breakfast, Hat Creek has become a popular destination. Built with families in mind, the playground is also popular among Little Elm’s youngest residents. Other favorites include Leo’s Brunch House, with an extensive breakfast and lunch menu that is sure to entice with breakfast skillets, egg benedicts and chicken fried steak. Savory Kitchen Bar, one of Little Elm’s most popular spots, serves up brisket mac and cheese, tomahawk pork chops and incredible seafood dishes and they also host weekend brunch — with bottomless mimosas. Little Elm’s booming bar and restaurant scene reflects the affection that visitors and residents alike have for this lakeside town, as well as the priority they place on good living and quality leisure time with family and friends.

Little Elm boasts some pretty impressive parks

L

ittle Elm Park, an expanse edged by Lake Lewisville, is seemingly the heart of Little Elm with a playground, well-groomed public beach and sand volleyball. McCord Park is a 50-acre park complete with a splash pad, trails, playgrounds, a pond,

disc-golf course and a brand-new dog park. Beard Park is a blast back to Little Elm’s past with a “family tree”-theme playground, historic cabin and the town’s original post office. But, Little Elm also features a less well-known park, Cottonwood Park. Currently, a bit of a diamond in the rough, this 160-acre, mostly undeveloped park is destined to be the crown jewel for the Town of Little Elm. In 2020, Little Elm’s Town Council approved the design for the first round of updates to the park to make it a regional destination. Located at 900 Lobo Lane, the park today features a few small picnic tables and some pretty good fishing, if you ask the locals. There are primitive hiking trails located just outside the park entrance that will make you forget you’re in the city — particularly in the springtime when they are lush and green. Just outside the entrance is the Cottonwood Sports Complex, complete with softball and baseball fields (which are reserved for league play) and a public playground.

Inside the park is the Cottonwood Creek Marina, an award-winning marina with 339 wet slips, both covered and open, accommodating boats from 24 feet to 50 feet. The Marina is privately owned and operated through a public-private agreement with Little Elm. The phase of improvement to the park includes updating and expanding the current gravel parking lot and adding restrooms. The first phase also comprises pavilions and other areas designated for day use and picnicking, a waterside playground, and an open space lawn for lawn games. “The first phase is about bringing Cottonwood Park up to the standards of our other parks, then building on the park to add one-of-a-kind recreation amenities in the future,” says Chad Hyde, Director of Community Services. Little Elm Mayor David Hillock stresses the importance of the Cottonwood Park redevelopment: “While in recent history, this park has been mostly known as the home to Cottonwood Creek Marina and the Cottonwood ball fields, there are an additional 125 acres of undeveloped land with lake views that are unmatched in the North D-FW area.” The plan for redevelopment, known as the Cottonwood Park Master Plan, also imagines future features such as a lookout tower, a ropes course, zip-lining, scenic overlooks, boardwalks and a fishing pier. Also planned in the project is a neighborhood trail connection, allowing residents in adjacent areas to access the park on foot or by bicycle.
