Please take a look at this informative guide that highlights the rich history of our setting, as well as the various departments in the hotel that can assist you during your visit. Sincerely, Jesse Mercado General Manager

ABOUT THE HERRINGTON Our location is the cornerstone of Geneva’s history! In the 1830s, James and Charity Herrington traveled west from Chicago in search of a new beginning. Exploring the banks of what we now call the Fox River, James located an area of land with choice timber and a good spring. This site, called “Big Springs” by the Pottawatomie, was the site upon which James and Charity chose to build a home and raise their children. In the 1870s, the site of the Herrington became the Butter and Cheese Manufacturing Co. It was the perfect location for a creamery since milk could be chilled in the cool rushing waters of the Fox River. Dairy farmers in the area brought their milk to the creamery for local sale and locomotive transport to Chicago. Years later, the creamery was purchased by those local farmers and renamed the “Geneva Rock Springs Creamery.” In the 1890s, the creamery was first sold to Milton Hershey of Pennsylvania, and then to C.H. Kleinbeck, the president of Lancaster Carmel Company. The City of Geneva purchased the creamery building in 1920 and rented out the space to the Koiless Heater Co. for the next 30 years. In 1950, Koiless Heater Co. moved out, and the space was used for storage and as the city jail. In the early 1990s, developer Kent Shodeen purchased the old creamery building and set about restoring it. Although part of the original structure remains untouched in the hotel lobby, it was Mr. Shodeen’s vision that the once rundown building be completely renovated to house the elegantly appointed hotel rooms of what would be The Herrington Inn & Spa. Each room is one of a kind and has a fireplace, whirlpool bath, and balcony with breathtaking views. Since The Herrington is a historical landmark in Geneva, touches of history can be found throughout the Inn. The creamery theme is present within the hotel and its daily operation. The choice of décor and amenities center on this theme and remind us of our location’s heritage. For instance, our logo features an angelic-looking cow while unbridling Beatrix, purchased by donation at the end of Chicago’s “Cows on Parade,” graces the spa lobby with her charm and uniqueness. Additionally, each evening, guests receive turndown service with fresh baked cookies and individual glass bottles of milk. With over a century of history behind the property, we proudly offer the old-world feel in a modern, four-diamond setting: The Herrington Inn & Spa.

LIFE SAFETY The Life Safety systems of the Herrington Inn have been engineered with your security in mind. Construction of the Inn includes the use of flame-resistant materials, with concrete and stone as the primary structural materials. All walls and partition areas are constructed with fire-rated protection materials for your safety. All guest rooms and corridors are protected by fully automatic sprinkler systems and smoke detectors. A central emergency panel is located in a specially equipped Fire Command Center that is constantly monitoring all safety systems within the Inn. Smoke detectors are linked directly to the Inn’s elevators, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, which provide automatic shutdown of these systems in an emergency situation. This feature precludes the dispersal of toxic fumes and smoke, and prevents the inadvertent use of elevators in a fire emergency. In addition to the public facilities, the working areas of the Inn have full sprinkler systems, including storage areas, mechanical spaces, and laundry and kitchen areas. Kitchen areas are also protected by automatic extinguishing systems and automatic gas shut-off valves. Fire Department hose connections are located on each floor and at the front and rear of the building. Each guest room contains a floor plan indicating your room location for safe evacuation and additional safety information in the event of an emergency. The information is located next to your guest room door. Fire Procedures • When you check in, make note of the following: L o c at e t h e n e a r e s t f i r e e x i t • Count and remember the number of doors between exits and your room. • Open and exit doors to be sure they work and examine the staircase layout. • Locate the nearest fire extinguisher. Inspect your Room • Study the layout of the room. • Determine how to open the windows. • Carefully read all fire emergency information displayed in your guest room. • Always keep your room key handy. If • • • • •

Inn Anyone discovering fire, smoke, or unusual heat should remain calm and do the following in order: Telephone the Emergency Center (Dial “0”). Tell the operator the exact nature of the problem (fire, smoke, sparks, etc.), exactly where the problem is, how serious the problem is, your name, and where you are. If the fire is large and endangers your life or the lives of others, close but do not lock all doors and windows to contain the fire and immediately leave the area. Follow the exit signs. Do not use the elevators. Always take your room key.

LIFE SAFETY T o e va c u at e y o u r g u e s t r o o m • Feel the door. If it is hot, do not open it. If it is cool, open it a crack, then look into the hallway. Be ready to slam it shut if you find smoke or flames. • When you leave, take your room key. • Keep a wet cloth tied over your nose and mouth. • Close the door behind you to keep the fire from spreading. Walk to the nearest smoke-free exit. If there is smoke or if it is dark, remain calm, drop to your hands and knees, and crawl to the exit (air is freshest at floor level). Remember to count the doors so you don’t get lost. • Do not use the elevators. If you can’t leave the room • If you can’t exit the hotel, your room or balcony is the safest place to be. Be prepared to fight smoke/fire. • Stay low to the floor, where air is fresher. Tie a wet cloth over your nose and mouth for easier breathing. • Fill a bathtub with water; you may need to wet down your room. • Seal the room from smoke by stuffing wet towels or sheets in cracks around the door. Turn off air conditioner and fans and seal up vents if they draw in smoke. • Call the operator (Dial “0”) and give your location. • Signal your presence by hanging a sheet out, then close the sliding door as a signal to firefighters that the room is occupied. Keep part of the sheet inside the room and wet with water from the tub. • Stay calm...(don’t hurry), stay relaxed, and THINK. Your danger is almost always less than you imagine it to be.
