I invite you to dine at ROX City Grill, the hotel’s restaurant, featuring prime steaks, chops and seafood contemporary American cuisine created by our Executive Chef. Enjoy the wine and martini lounge, which is open nightly, and live entertainment with professional entertainers Thursday through Saturday. The vision of Colonel Edward Baker is alive and well at Hotel Baker. Rich in history, Hotel Baker was built in 1928 on the site of the old Haines Mill. The hotel began as a dream of Edward J. Baker, a native of St. Charles who earned the honorary title of “Colonel” thanks to his excellent luck in horse racing. In 1918, at the age of 50, Baker inherited nearly $20 million from his sister, Dellora Baker Gates, heiress to the Texaco Oil Company. Using only the interest income from his inheritance, Baker commissioned local architects and craftsmen to construct his vision of an elegant resort. He spared no expense to build and furnish the most luxurious small hotel in the country. Final construction costs totaled more than $1 million, and the hotel boasted the most modern conveniences of the day when it opened June 2, 1928. Hotel Baker has been restored in recent years, creating an ambiance reminiscent of its formal splendor. And due to its architectural and historical significance, Hotel Baker is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Hotel Baker continues to welcome guests to its warm embrace and elegant setting in historic downtown St. Charles and remains the “Gem of the Valley.” We look forward to your return. With best regards, Rowena Felix Salas

SAFETY Each guest room contains a floor plan indicating your room location for safe evacuation and additional safety information in the event of an emergency. The information is located next to your guest room door. FIRE PROCEDURES • When you check in, make note of the following: L O C AT E T H E N E A R E S T F I R E E X I T • Count and remember the number of doors between exits and your room. • Open any exit doors to be sure they work and examine the staircase layout. • Locate the nearest fire extinguisher. INSPECT YOUR ROOM • Study the layout of the room. • Determine how to open the windows. • Carefully read all fire emergency information displayed in your guest room. • Always keep your room key handy. IF YOU FIND FIRE • Anyone discovering fire, smoke or unusual heat should remain calm and do the following in order: • Telephone the Emergency Center (Touch “0”). • Tell the operator the exact nature of the problem (fire, smoke, sparks, etc.), exactly where the problem is, how serious the problem is, your name and where you are. • If the fire is large and endangers your life or the lives of others, close, but do not lock, all doors and windows to contain the fire and immediately leave the area. • Follow the exit signs. Do not use the elevators. Always take your room key. T O E V A C U AT E Y O U R G U E S T R O O M • Feel the door. If it is hot, do not open it. If it is cool, open it a crack, then look into the hallway. Be ready to slam it shut if you find smoke or flames. • When you leave, take your room key. • Keep a wet cloth tied over your nose and mouth. • Close the door behind you to keep the fire from spreading. If there isn’t smoke, walk to the nearest smokefree exit. If there is smoke or if it is dark, remain calm, drop to your hands and knees and crawl to the exit (air is freshest at floor level). Remember to count the doors so you don’t get lost. • Do not use the elevators. I F Y O U C A N ’ T L E AV E T H E R O O M • If you can’t exit the hotel, your room or balcony is the safest place to be. Be prepared to fight smoke/fire. • Stay low to the floor where air is fresher. Tie a wet cloth over your nose and mouth for easier breathing. • Fill a bathtub with water—you may need to wet down your room. • Seal the room from smoke by stuffing wet towels or sheets in cracks around the door. Turn off air conditioner and fans and seal up vents if they draw in smoke. • Call the Operator (Touch “0”) and give your location. • Signal your presence by hanging a sheet out, then close the sliding door as a signal to firefighters that the room is occupied. Keep part of the sheet inside the room and wet with water from the tub. • Stay calm...don’t hurry, stay relaxed and THINK. Your danger is almost always less than you imagine it to be.
