Strengthening Wisconsin’s Response to

ELDER ABUSE BY ATTORNEY GENERAL BRAD SCHIMEL

Over the next two decades, Wisconsin’s population of adults 65+ will increase by more than 72 percent. This changing population trend is common among other states across the country, and many experts have dubbed it the “Silver Tsunami.” As Wisconsin’s attorney general, I want to be ready for this coming MARCH–AUGUST 2018 JOURNEY OF AGING

tsunami, and we need to prepare key partners, such as law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, victim service providers, financial institutions, senior living facilities, advocacy organizations, and many others, for the increased challenges that lie ahead for seniors. For this reason, I’ve assembled a multidisciplinary Task Force on Elder Abuse. In addition to studying the

impact of elder abuse in Wisconsin and assessing ways to improve outcomes for this growing population of citizens, the task force will develop strategies to address barriers in investigation and prosecutions of elder abuse, strengthen consumer protection for seniors, and create recommendations for improved cross-system communications.

AGING & CAREGIVER RESOURCES | 11 abuse alone costs more than $2.6 billion annually. It’s clear that Wisconsin and our nation has a lot of work to do in this area. We cannot afford to be unprepared for the Silver Tsunami to hit us head on. I’m encouraged by the partnerships we are forming and welcome your ideas as we start to tackle this important issue.

There are many different forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial, and studies have shown that one in nine seniors report experiencing some form of abuse or neglect in the past 12 months. The trends in data from adult protective service workers across Wisconsin have shown a steady increase in elder abuse in the last decade, and there’s no sign of it slowing as this population grows. Sadly, instances of financial abuse, one of the most common forms of elder abuse, are increasing each year. Criminals prey on older adults because they know how vulnerable they are to these types of attacks, and the types of exploitation tactics criminals are using are increasingly becoming more sophisticated and brazen. I saw it firsthand earlier this year when an elderly friend was contacted by an individual posing as the government, claiming that my friend owed back taxes. The “government official” threatened to

arrest my friend if he did not comply with certain demands. My friend grew up in a generation where he didn’t have debt and feared getting into trouble. The criminals even spoofed the phone number calling him to pretend to be the local law enforcement agency. My friend and his wife were afraid and embarrassed, and paid the criminals thousands of dollars only to realize later it was a scam. While these victims are my friends, I know this happens every day to older adults across Wisconsin, and I am making this a top priority.

Attorney General Brad Schimel was elected as Wisconsin attorney general in 2014. He began his career as a frontline prosecutor in the Waukesha County DA’s Office in 1989. After serving 17 years as an assistant district attorney, he was elected Waukesha County District Attorney in 2006 and was reelected twice. In his career as a frontline prosecutor, Schimel tried more than 150 jury trials in every type of case a prosecutor handles, from traffic cases to sexual assaults to numerous homicides. His distinguished career includes recognition from the Wisconsin Association of Victim and Witness Professionals as “Wisconsin Professional of the Year” for his work on behalf of survivors of sexual assault.

Elder abuse doesn’t just impact seniors, it impacts our economy and all taxpayers. Financial abuse has been reported to cost older Americans more than $2.6 billion annually. That figure gets worse because 1 in 10 financial abuse victims turns to Medicaid as a direct result of their savings being stolen. The cost to Medicaid for financial

FAMILY CARE PROGRAM Linking the Community with Long-Term Care Solutions BY GINA GROSKOPF

For over 20 years, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been involved in some aspect of long-term care for seniors and people with disabilities. There are a variety of programs and organizations that support this community, including a program called Family Care, which operates in many counties throughout the state of Wisconsin, including Dane, Sauk, and Columbia in south central Wisconsin. MARCHâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;AUGUST 2018 JOURNEY OF AGING

At its core, Family Care is a Medicaidfunded program managed by the Department of Health Services (DHS), which offers support services to help people live in their homes and as independently as possible, for as long as possible. These services are specifically tailored to frail elders and adults who have intellectual or physical disabilities. Adult day care centers, community-supported

living, home-delivered meals, and home safety checks are excellent examples of services provided through a Family Care program. While overseen by DHS, Family Care is administered by organizations often referred to as Managed Care Organizations (MCOs). MCOs develop and manage a comprehensive network of long-

AGING & CAREGIVER RESOURCES | 17 term care providers and provide each Family Care member with a dedicated care team, including a care manager and registered nurse. According to the DHS website, this care team works with the member to build a highly personalized care plan based on a comprehensive assessment of the member’s needs, abilities, preferences, and values.

...support services to help people live in their homes and as independently as possible. In Wisconsin counties where Family Care is offered, people have at least two choices for companies to manage their care. To learn about the companies who offer Family Care, individuals or guardians should make an appointment with their local Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). To find a local ADRC office, visit dhs.wisconsin.gov/adrc. The knowledgeable staff at the ADRC will work to understand each person’s needs and program eligibility, then present unbiased options from which to choose. Once they make a choice, they will be assigned a care team and begin to develop the care plan mentioned above. There are many exciting success stories that come from the Family Care program. It’s hard to choose just one to illustrate the program’s effectiveness, but a scenario we often see at Care Wisconsin is a member spends time in a nursing home, perhaps due to an accident (like a fall) or hospitalization, but they desire to move back into their community. The MCO care team, including the care manager and registered nurse, pull together options for the member. This ranges from returning home to moving to

an assisted-living facility. They then help arrange supports to make this placement successful. A member may need transportation services to get to appointments; require adaptive showering equipment, like a shower bench; or even employment assistance. All of these can be made possible through Family Care. With these supports in place, the hope is that the program’s long-term care objectives can be met to keep people living as independently and as healthily as possible. Estate Planning for the

ALZHEIMER’S AND DEMENTIA CLIENT BY WAYNE WILSON

We’re all fearful that our physical or mental health will someday cause us to require nursing home care. Many sources estimate that 60 to 70 percent of people who reach the age of 65 will require nursing home care at some point during their remaining lifetime. Those suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia have the added concern that they will be a burden on their families, both financially and MARCH–AUGUST 2018 JOURNEY OF AGING

emotionally. They’ll frequently require care and financial support for many years. While estate planners cannot eliminate the occurrence of Alzheimer’s or dementia, they can greatly relieve the financial and emotional burden by developing a plan that will pay for the needed care. Nursing home care in Wisconsin currently averages approximately

$265 per day across the state, with higher costs where demand for resources is higher. The average cost translates to over $8,000 per month, or over $96,000 per year, and the question becomes, “How will I pay for this care?” The three most common methods of payment are using your own financial resources, obtaining Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI), and relying on government programs.

ALZHEIMER’S & DEMENTIA | 25 Plan proactively. First determine if obtaining LTCI is an option. To qualify, the insurance company must determine that you meet underwriting guidelines, meaning that you must be healthy enough for the insurance company to accept your application. This generally means you must apply for LTCI while you are younger and before you have ambulatory or health issues. Moreover, the older you are when you obtain the coverage, the higher the premium cost. If you do not qualify for LTCI and you have insufficient resources to pay $8,000 per month or more for care, you should consider meeting with an attorney familiar with creating and funding a qualifying Medicaid irrevocable trust. ••••••• through the use of this type of irrevocable trust, which is designed so that you can qualify for Medicaid while keeping your legacy inside the trust. The more commonly known revocable trust or revocable living trust, while a tremendous tool that can be used for most estate planning options, provides no protection from the requirement that your assets be used to pay for your longterm care needs. To qualify financially for Medicaid, an individual can have no more than $2,000 of nonexempt assets.

For a married couple to qualify for Medicaid, the spouse in the nursing home can have no more than $2,000 and the spouse at home is limited to approximately $119,000 of nonexempt assets. The assets titled in the irrevocable trust do not count against these limits. As with most things that sound too good to be true, there’s a catch. The assets you wish to protect must have been placed into the irrevocable trust a minimum of five years before you apply for Medicaid. To take advantage of this type of planning, you must be proactive. Do not procrastinate. Plan today!

Conscious dying is a fledgling philosophy of end-of-life care sweeping the country as it inspires innovative thinking about death. It has spread far and wide as people seek to understand, cope, and even celebrate this time in our lives in new and creative ways. The conscious-dying movement has sparked new thought and writing, including works by hospice and palliative care professionals, like Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal, Jessica Nutik Zitter’s Extreme MARCH–AUGUST 2018 JOURNEY OF AGING

Measures: Finding a Better Path to the End of Life, and John Abraham’s How to Get the Death You Want: A Practical and Moral Guide. Abraham, a spokesperson for the group Final Exit Network, includes in his appendix: A Day to be Celebrated, We Used to Die Better, and Let Your Wishes be Known to Your Family. You may be ahead of the game and have your will completed, funeral home chosen (or completed home funeral instructions), burial plot paid for, and documents and powers of attorney all notified, signed, and ready for any contingency. Maybe

you have spoken with family members or others in your life, discussing the end-of-life options for treatment and all the “what ifs” that can pop up and surprise us during this tumultuous time. If you are like most, however, you have probably not even started this process. Moreover, you may not have thought about the end of your life as a powerful and educational event for all of the ones you love and leave behind. What are your final wishes for leaving an enduring legacy? A final story? A goodbye event that hopes to capture your personal message

END OF LIFE | 33 of hope, love, history, change, and growth for future generations? This is what a final-wishes document may capture. It’s a deeper dive than a will and testament. It’s your voice, song, and blessing to those of us who live our lives remembering you. It’s truly one of your final gifts to those you love, as it teaches those left behind how to approach and navigate a loved one’s dying with truth, grace, and beauty. When writing a final-wishes document, the point is to think outside the box. Who are you and what has your life been about? Here is a brief checklist of some areas you may want to include. • Do you want a traditional funeral home service or another option, such as a parade, singalong, party, or dance or a home funeral planned with your family? • Would you like a video or story written about your life to be shared at your funeral? What would be included? Do you have any pictures or special moments or life lessons you learned that you’d like to share? How did you live your life? What events changed you, shaped your life, and what did you learn along the way? What can you tell us about your journey and the adventures you had? What should we remember? What is your advice for those of us who are left? This is your chance to give messages to those you love. You can write letters for special ones to open after your death or on important occasions, such as the birth of a future grandchild. • Do you have any regrets? Any old business you need to resolve? Write them down. Letters are a good way to send a message

after you’ve passed or before. Even if a person has died before you, it’s fine to bring up and resolve old issues. Many who are nearing the end of life have a deep need to resolve old battles and misunderstandings. This is a time to bring peace, comfort, and forgiveness, including those who may be affected by our choices who may have been too young to understand why those choices were made. A few words of reconciliation go a long way at this time. It’s a good time to use the opportunity for healing. For more support, death doulas can guide us through the death process, and are experts in helping to develop a final-wishes plan. Years ago, when we lived in smaller local communities, funeral homes were mostly family owned and had relationships with the people in their community. Funeral homes would perform services and then bill the families, giving the grieving MARCHâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;AUGUST 2018 JOURNEY OF AGING

families about 30 to 60 days to get their financial affairs in order after a funeral. Since then, laws have changed with settling estates and filing life insurance claims. Even getting the death certificates can take up to a few months to get done,

and businesses, such as funeral homes, want to be paid before services are performed. Preplanning that includes instructions and funding is more important today than ever. Proper prefund-

The life insurance policies that cover funeral costs are unique because they do not require a death certificate—they require a claim form signed by the funeral director. Proper steps.

• Instructions. This will let your loved ones and the funeral home know your wishes, including if you want a traditional burial or cremation, an open or closed

This should be included with the insurance policy so the funeral director can file and get paid within 24 to 48 hours.

By having this form, the veteran will receive a military flag for a family member as well as other benefits given to military veterans. • Cemetery plot or mausoleum crypt information. Any and all paperwork for burial place. • Mortal remains transportation documents. This is a noninsurance policy that will pay for the cost of transporting the body if a person passes while out of state or country. These expenses, depending on place of death can exceed the actual cost of a funeral. We all know that death is not a question of if, but a question of when. resources. Grateful for Kibble on Wheels, she is enthusiastic about how helpful a pet can be. “My dog heals me in ways that nobody else can. Hope challenges me in good ways, and helps me not feel so alone,” Melanie says. “The Kibble program helps me be able to have a pet again.”

Melanie and Hope are clients of Independent Living, Inc., a Dane County nonprofit that operates Evening Meals on Wheels and its extension program, Kibble on Wheels. The pet food program relies exclusively on donations and volunteers. Once a month, Jessica picks up puppy food from Independent Living and takes it to Melanie and Hope.

About 40 companion animals currently receive support from Kibble on Wheels. Most pets are cats and dogs, although in the past there have been birds and fish.

Melanie, who is homebound, clearly adores her playful teddy bear puppy. She’s had dogs in the past, and is frank about cancer and other health issues impacting her life and MARCH–AUGUST 2018 JOURNEY OF AGING

When the Kibble on Wheels program began in 2006, it was the first of its kind in Wisconsin. “The program operates entirely on grants, donations, in-kind gifts, and volunteers,” says Addie Endreson, who coordinates both the Kibble on Wheels program and the volunteer program at Independent Living. “Donations vary from cash to inkind items, like canned pet food,

cat litter, and pet toys from individuals, groups, and local businesses. Mounds Pet Food Warehouse has been very supportive. They have donated hundreds of pounds of dry dog and cat food.” Heather Sullivan of Mounds says the company is proud to partner with Kibble on Wheels. “Our mission is to help enrich the lives of pets and pet parents in our community. We feel people should not have to make the choice between feeding their pets or feeding themselves. This is just one of the many outreach programs we support to help keep pets in their homes with their owners. Mounds believes in giving back to the community that supports us— it’s what we do.” To participate in Kibble on Wheels, the pet owner must be a client of Independent Living through a separate service and meet other qualifications. Priority is

They are more than companion animals—they become family. I couldn’t imagine someone facing the decision of whether they should eat or if their beloved pet should eat. Or worse, having to make a decision of giving up a pet due to financial stresses. There are many animals looking for loving homes. These animals already have that.”

Through Kibble on Wheels, pets and the people who love them have a better chance of staying together. “All of my dogs have been cherished members of my family to walk through life with, including Hope, but Hope plays an additional role in relation to my health challenges,” Melanie says. “It means so much to me to be able to feed Hope food from the Kibble on Wheels program. I am grateful.”

This was corroborated through research by Meals on Wheels America. The national association found that by sharing their meals, seniors weren’t getting enough to eat, and their pets were eating inappropriately. Both situations were detrimental to health.

Meals on Wheels America worked with Banfield Pet Hospitals and its charitable foundation to create a grant program. Independent Living, as a member of Meals on Wheels America, has received several small grants through the years for Kibble on Wheels. Those small grants and cash donations help offset costs for food for pets who have special diets or other needs.

Opening the cedar chest of the mind brings personal joy and satisfaction to the owner, but memories and stories also offer powerful ways to connect with others. They can bridge the generations and underscore a shared experience or strengthen understanding of family and general humanity.

holds much more value than fresh nutrients. For Pam Barnes of Mount Horeb, baking is her sole passion and a delicious way to preserve the fire of her family’s heritage. The recipes and knowledge started as farm-life necessity for her mother and aunts back in the early 1900s, but the traditions they spawned continue to bring the family together in a new century. Whether at funerals, anniversary celebrations, or family reunions, the next generations bring special dishes that their parents made. “We end

GENERAL | 53 up talking about all the shared experiences and memories that are triggered by the food,” Pam says. “Food is comfort. In fact, at the end of life there’s one universal thing that appeals to people and that’s a memory of food.” Pam experienced that firsthand when her father requested his favorite cake shortly before he died. Of course, Pam made the cake for him. “Baking something is very personal and can only be done with love,” she says. To honor him and keep his memory alive, she continues to make her dad’s favorite on Father’s Day and his birthday. Pam, who hosts solepassionbaker .com to share her love for baking, says it’s never too late to start a new tradition. Something as simple as a favorite holiday cookie can become something the family looks forward to year after year. “Someday it will be a memory that your family will want to recreate for their own families, and tradition is born.”

Back in the mid-1970s, Attic Angel Community resident Marion Applegate took advantage of technology to record her parents telling about their lives and careers. As a history buff, she finds it fascinating to hear the personal contributions and experiences of people within the context of a bigger history. “I decided I wanted to preserve family history through their own words,” she says. “It helps younger generations see where their roots are and connect more directly with their ancestors.”

Family history and connectedness are revered among her relatives, and nothing symbolizes that more than La Dress—the 1948 satin wedding dress that has been worn by eight brides in three generations…and counting. “The dress became a tradition and now has a life of its own,” Marion says.

Today, Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, Inc. (BDCH) represents the culmination of visionary leadership, past and present, and a continued dedication to providing those who entrust us with their care with the safest, highest-quality services across the continuum. More than just a hospital, BDCH provides the greater Dodge County region with care from birth to end of life, with myriad specialty services that allow residents to receive the type of care they might typically expect from tertiary hospitals. In 1972, the community came together and witnessed the merger of Lutheran Hospital (est. 1922) and St. Joseph’s Hospital (est. 1938), the first time for Catholic and Lutheran hospitals in Wisconsin. leaders of the day knew then that a strong, local hospital increases the region’s ability to attract highly qualified physicians and other professional providers while optimizing quality of care for the region’s patients. With this in mind, BDCH was born. In 2006, a brand-new Beaver Dam Community Hospital opened for service. The 60-bed acute-care hospital combined advances in medicine and technology with a state-of-the-art facility that created a healing environment of care for patients and their families. Kim Miller, FACHE, became BDCH President and CEO shortly thereafter, and slowly and surely began working toward improving the quality of services BDCH

Press Ganey also awarded BDCH with the Guardian of Excellence Award for Clinical Quality in 2017, while BDCH Hillside Home Care was named a Top Agency of the HomeCare Elite for the 10th time in the last 12 years. Chronic INFLAMMATION Three Healthy Lifestyle Changes BY JESI HIRSCH, RN

Alzheimer’s, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. What do they have in common? Chronic inflammation. If you knew what caused these conditions, would you take control of your life so you could prevent them? If we watch too much television, the drug companies would have us believing there is a magic pill that could turn all our diseases into a wonderful life. If that were true, we would all be healthy and happy. MARCH–AUGUST 2018 JOURNEY OF AGING

You have an amazing immune system. It is your body’s defense system against infection and illness. For example, if you sprain your ankle, your immune system kicks in. Your ankle swells up, it hurts, and the skin feels warm to the touch and turns red. This is acute inflammation, and it’s what your body is supposed to do—fight off infections, increase blood flow to places that need healing, and generate pain as a signal that something is wrong. Without acute

inflammation, wounds and infections wouldn’t heal. Chronic inflammation (low-grade inflammation) is another product of your immune system. It can’t be seen or felt with a touch to the skin. Chronic inflammation is similar to wood smoldering in a campfire. The fire (chronic inflammation) slowly burns down the wood (your arteries), and then the wood starts to fall apart. Chronic inflammation has a damaging effect on arteries,

HEALTH | 67 causing heart attacks and strokes. It depresses the immune system, promotes formation of cancerous tumors, and destroys nerve cells in the brain. This is the immune system gone awry.

The good news is that we know many of the causes of chronic inflammation. There are three lifestyle changes you can make to address chronic inflammation: food, environmental toxins, and stress. 1. Inflammatory foods include sugar, vegetable oils, fried foods, dairy, gluten, artificial sweeteners and additives, and saturated fats. Anti-inflammatory foods include olive oil, green leafy vegetables, walnuts and almonds, wild salmon, sardines, strawberries, blueberries, broccoli, ginger, and turmeric. Eat more of these to help fight inflammation and chronic disease. 2. Environmental toxins are cancercausing chemicals and endocrine disrupters—chemicals that may interfere with your endocrine system, such as the thyroid, adrenals, and pancreas. The immune system recognizes these chemicals as something that shouldn’t be in your body, initiates an inflammatory response, and then attacks it. The continued exposure to these chemicals sets up chronic inflammation. What are these environmental toxins? • Heavy metals. Found in some fish, vaccines, drinking water, pesticides, and dental

amalgams, to name a few. These can cause cancer, neurological conditions, Alzheimer’s, and damage to blood vessels. • Pesticides. Found in bug sprays and commercially raised meats. These can cause cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and nerve damage. • Phthalates. Found in some plastic bottles and plastic food containers. These can cause endocrine system damage. It’s important to limit your exposure to these toxins and many more.

3. Stress. It’s a part of life; however, what’s important is how you deal with it. Here are several antistress techniques: meditation, yoga, deep breathing, journaling, walking in nature, and anything else that calms your mind and brings you inner peace. Love your immune system. Take care of it, and it will take care of you!

Expressive therapy, also known as the expressive therapies, expressive arts therapy, or creative arts therapy, is the use of the creative arts as a form of therapy. It differs from traditional art expression in that the process of creation is emphasized rather than the final product. Expressive arts therapies encompass the use of music, art, drama, poetry, creative writing, dance, and movement within the context of psychotherapy, rehabilitation, education, and medicine.

One of the groups Melissa leads is called Refresh and Relax. She says, “The idea of chaining together music that starts in an upbeat fashion and gradually gets slower to calm us. This can be especially helpful during the end of the day for people who sundown.”

At both Oakwood Village campuses—University Woods off Mineral Point Road and Prairie Ridge near American Parkway— Melissa Cole, MT-BC, is at the forefront of all things music therapy related. “In a nutshell, I use music to help people. It’s a great tool. It taps emotions, connects us to other people, brings memories of childhood to life, helps us to move, and helps to coordinate and time our movements,” Melissa says. “It can relax us and help us sleep. One of Melissa’s primary goals in each music therapy session is to create an opportunity for residents and families to express emotions within an atmosphere of comfort and relaxation. Individuals may join in the making of music, choose to listen, or both. Music therapy is an evidencebased health profession with a strong research foundation, and its practitioners require knowledge in psychology, medicine, and music. Music interventions are used to accomplish individual goals. Examples of what a music therapist does include working with residents to reduce pain and improve motor function, such as with people who

have Parkinson’s disease. Whereas using music in a medical setting, such as a piano player in the lobby of a hospital and nurses playing background music for patients, are noteworthy, they aren’t clinical music therapy. After a recent music therapy session, Melissa says, “There were a lot of things from a music therapist standpoint that you may not have noticed unless pointed out to you. Just some of what was going on during the session included controlling the tempo in order to avoid agitation. We are trained to watch for the signs of engagement, agitation, and relaxation. We validate emotionally significant comments. We use music to stimulate cognition and to reminisce with residents.” Music therapists must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in music therapy from one of the American Music Therapy Association’s (AMTA) 72 approved colleges and universities and 1,200 hours of clinical training. Music therapists must hold a MT-BC credential, issued through the Certification Board for Music Therapists, which protects the public by ensuring competent practice and requiring

Specialized Staff to Administer the Full Continuum of Care The traditional nursing home model is predicted to decline by about 20 percent by 2021. Many older adults are preferring to age in a community that offers the full continuum of care under one roof—from independent living to assisted and enhanced assisted living to memory care—so they don’t need to undergo a disruptive move as their health needs shift. When touring communities, ask whether they offer multiple levels of care, whether apartments can easily be converted from independent to assisted living, and whether the community has a multidisciplinary health team to provide specialized care.

Today’s seniors increasingly want to age in an urban setting within close proximity to museums, entertainment, shopping, and dining, rather than being relegated to the suburbs. New communities are featuring more open/shared spaces, similar to hotels, and may even partner with local businesses, such as entertainment and education venues, restaurants, and spas, in order to increase access to services. Because seniors are remaining active longer and understand the benefits of outdoor activities, more and more senior living communities are offering space for residents to garden, pathways to enjoy walks, and outdoor relaxation areas, such as ponds and gazebos. Pay attention to whether these areas are well maintained and if the residents are utilizing them regularly.

Are you prepared to stay in your home as you age? According to AARP, 87 percent of adults 65+ want to stay in their current home. In contrast, the number of adults who plan for this option is surprisingly small—less than 20 percent. As a residential remodeling company that specializes in universal-design and aging-in-place improvements, we see firsthand that most people don’t feel they need to think about aging-in-place updates until after a fall or illness has occurred. We prepare our homes for winter, we save for retirement, but somehow MARCH–AUGUST 2018 JOURNEY OF AGING

preparing for our later years is a can that keeps getting kicked down the road. Every once in a blue moon, I come across a forward-thinking client, like Jane. After a medical diagnosis, Jane found herself more reliant on her motorized scooter to get around. She didn’t want to just add grab bars or install a higher toilet. She wanted her new condo to be a place that would allow her to not only live safely, but to thrive. Homeowners like Jane have flipped the script on aging in place and

universal design. It’s not just about safety and security, but also about living well in their own home. Jane sums it up best, “I think people often avoid thinking about getting older. Maybe it’s denial. Maybe it’s fear. What I’ve learned is that accepting life’s changes rather than avoiding them allows you to make the most of the situation. That includes how and where you live. I would advise anyone to create the home of your future now while you can enthusiastically enjoy the process. It was fun rather than frustrating because I could do it thoughtfully rather than in crisis. And when you work with a good quality contractor/remodeler, universal design is universally appealing to all ages.” Not sure where to start? There are several resources available to find knowledgeable contractors. Look for a Certified Aging in Place (CAPS) remodeler through NAHB.com or Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) through NARImadison.org. Contractors with these designations have undergone coursework to understand the intricacies of this specific type of remodeling project. In

short, they know their stuff. They can provide an assessment of your home, highlighting the areas of most concern. They take that information and combine it with the specific needs of the homeowner to create a detailed plan. There are three key areas of a home that are the foundation of a good aging-in-place remodel: kitchen, bathroom, and flooring. In Jane’s condo, we were able to address all three. We designed a more open floor plan for the kitchen and living areas. The kitchen is all universal design: forward controls on the cook top, modified lower cabinets that house easy-to-reach electrical outlets, and a lower countertop height for food prep. New exceptionally durable bamboo floors throughout make tricky transitions between rooms a thing of the past. Relocating the stacked washer-dryer unit from a bathroom closet to the master walk-in closet allowed for a far more accessible side-by-side washer-dryer and an unencumbered, spacious roll-in shower. Thanks to Jane’s foresight, her condo is now customized to her specific needs and also has a room for a future live-in care provider. This
