TM
HISTORY OF LA FONDA La Fonda on the Plaza is filled with history and lore. Santa Fe was established as a “villa” (city) by the Spanish in 1610, and a “fonda” (inn) on this exact location was one of the first businesses created. Two centuries later, in 1821, Captain William Becknell found an adobe hotel waiting to welcome him as he completed the first successful trading expedition from Missouri to Santa Fe along a route now known as the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. With the establishment of this major trade route, “La Fonda” became a draw for traders, politicians, gamblers and adventurers. The hotel’s reputation for enjoyable lodging and good food grew, and its saloon and casino did a brisk business. When the United States went to war with Mexico in 1846, President James Polk sent Brigadier-General Stephen W. Kearny to conquer New Mexico. His campaign was swift and bloodless, and in 1848 New Mexico became a United States Territory. The lavish Victory Ball was held at La Fonda and the cream of Santa Fe society attended. After the end of the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant was given a ball at the hotel. Throughout the 19th century the hotel changed ownership and names several times, and its guest list included the famous and the infamous. Fortunes were won and lost in its colorful gambling hall. In 1857, one unlucky gambler was caught cheating and lost his life at the end of a rope strung up in the hotel’s backyard. A territorial Supreme Court judge was shot to death in the hotel lobby over a “misunderstanding,” and rumors abound that Henry McCarty, better known as Billy the Kid, washed dishes in the hotel kitchen and played the piano in the bar.
The old adobe hotel was demolished in 1919, and in 1920 citizen investors bought stock to finance the present-day La Fonda on the Plaza. But, after hiring the architectural firm of Rapp, Rapp and Hendrickson to design and finally build the fourstory, 46-room hotel, the venture failed. In 1925, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad acquired the hotel and leased it the following year to the Fred Harvey Company. In 1926, Santa Fe architect John Gaw Meem was hired to enlarge the hotel to 156 rooms, adding the third, fourth and fifth floors, including deluxe suites and the Bell Tower on the fifth floor. The Bell Tower was modeled after the mission bell towers at Acoma Pueblo, though the La Fonda tower never actually had a bell. Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, principal designer and architect of many buildings at the Grand Canyon, worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and the Harvey Company and was brought in to oversee Meem’s work and transform the interior of the hotel. And transform it she did. She designed eight hundred pieces of hand-painted furniture for each of the rooms and the public spaces, and her unique style infused every aspect of the hotel with charm and glamour. La Fonda on the Plaza remained a Harvey House for over 40 years, offering wonderful accommodations and friendly service. Fred Harvey hired bright, attractive young women to serve in La Fonda’s restaurants, and they became known as the Harvey Girls. In 1968, La Fonda was acquired by businessman, Sam Ballen and his wife Ethel. In 2014, long-time family friend and chairman of the board, Jennifer Lea Kimball, worked with her brother’s investment firm, Dallas-based Cienda Partners, to put together a group of investors who, together, purchased La Fonda. La Fonda remains a private, family-run hotel with

THE ART OF LA FONDA La Fonda on the Plaza is home to a vibrant collection of original Southwestern fine art and folk art, and the visual surprises begin the moment you step into the hotel’s lobby. There are intricate hand-carved beams overhead, original paintings on the walls, and every niche and surface reveals a charming glimpse into the history and lore of this remarkable hotel. Renowned Southwest artist Gerald Cassidy (1879-1934) was commissioned by the Fred Harvey Company (La Fonda was a Harvey House from 1926 until 1968) to create ten paintings that celebrate the people of the Southwest. Four of these paintings - “Santiago,” “Kit Carson”, “Fray Marcos” and “Los Matachines Dancer” – are prominently displayed in the central lobby, drawing you in with their energy and vibrant colors. The other spirited Cassidy paintings, along with a large map that was commissioned for Indian Detours displayed in the Santa Fe room, are scattered throughout the hotel. In addition, nine copperplate photogravures of New Mexico Pueblo Indians by famed American West photographer Edward S. Curtis are displayed in a glass case in the vestibule at the garage entrance the hotel. The hotel’s signature dining room, La Plazuela, was originally an open-air patio in the 1920s, but over the years it has gone through a beautiful metamorphosis, including a meticulous renovation in 2009. A striking wrought iron chandelier dominates the center of the room, hanging just above a charming fountain that mirrors the one in that long- ago outdoor patio. Four hundred and sixty hand-painted glass windows encircle the room, and most of the architectural details were created by local artisans. Even the fabrics were culled from textile designs from the New Mexico Museum collection. Just behind
TM
La Plazuela is the beautiful portal with its majestic bas-relief Rönnebeck kiva fireplace. This wonderful focal point is original to the 1920’s hotel and is a lovely gathering place for hotel guests, especially in winter when there is a blazing fire. The mezzanine, just above La Plazuela, is surrounded by a hand-forged wrought iron railing that took months for a local artist to create. Two striking murals of local Native American scenes by Santa Fe artist Vladan Stiha (1908-1992) are suspended in lighted glass cases along two long walls. The murals were carefully restored as part of the renovation and occupy a place of pride overlooking La Plazuela. The hotel’s second floor ballroom is just off the sky-lit mezzanine and is decorated with intricate sand painting ceiling panels and remarkable hand-crafted stained glass, tin chandeliers and wall sconces. This lovely room also features beautiful murals painted by New Mexico artist Paul Lantz (1908-2000) and William Lumpkins, a Santa Fe artist, author and architect best known for his abstract watercolors and pioneering solar adobe architecture. Other Lantz paintings and murals can be seen in the hotel’s historic New Mexico Room, which was the original dining room. Another historic space is the Santa Fe Room, just down the hallway from the lobby and next to the New Mexico Room. A large pictorial map of New Mexico and Arizona and two other large paintings, all by Gerald Cassidy, hang on one wall around the beautiful bas-relief banquette. The opposite wall is dominated by a dramatic kiva fireplace with original ironwork sconces set to each side. Five tin-and-glass chandeliers, which were antiques when installed in the 1920s, hang from the room’s wooden ceiling. The Santa Fe and New Mexico rooms are often used together for La Fonda weddings.

ALTITUDE SICKNESS
If you are visiting New Mexico from a lower altitude area, please be aware that Santa Fe’s elevation is 7,000 feet and nearby mountains are over 10,000 feet. A rapid change in altitude can cause a wide variety of symptoms. Guests with chronic illnesses such as heart disease and high blood pressure should take special care.
SYMPTOMS
Listlessness, drowsiness, apathy, dizziness, fainting Prolonged or severe headache Extreme thirst Sleep disturbances
Appetite loss, weakness, slowed reflexes Nausea and vomiting Heart palpitations or pounding pulse Congested lungs, difficulty breathing, coughing, pink phlegm You can have altitude sickness without having all the symptoms on the list. If you experience the last few symptoms on the list you should seek medical attention immediately.
PREVENTION OF ALTITUDE SICKNESS
Ascend to higher elevations slowly. Before strenuous exercise, allow yourself to rest for 24 hours when traveling to 9,000 feet and 48 hours when traveling above 12,000 feet. Also, make sure to: Drink plenty of water - Santa Fe water is quite safe and tasty, so please don’t hesitate to fill your water bottles from the bathroom tap. Avoid alcoholic beverages, particularly your first day. Sleep below 8,000 feet.
OTHER WAYS ALTITUDE AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH
Santa Fe’s air is thinner, so there is more exposure to ultraviolet light. Use plenty of sunscreen, wear a broad-brimmed hat and long-sleeved shirt. The air is also drier, so drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Use moisturizers as usual and lip balm, which can be purchased in the Detours gift shop. High altitude also greatly decreases alcohol tolerance. If you drink, do so slowly, in moderation and not on an empty stomach. TM

LA FONDA ART & HISTORY TOURS
ART GALLERIES/MUSEUMS
Santa Fe is rated “One of America’s Top Mountain Bike Towns” by USA Today and a “Top Ten Mountain Biking Destination in North America” by Singletracks.com. You can take a leisurely loop around the city or along the RTD Mountain Trail Route or set off on more of an adventure in the nearby hills and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We offer special city tours, a Bike & Brew tour or a Native American Art & History tour through Routes Bicycle Tours & Rentals or our concierge will be happy to make rental arrangements for half-day, full-day or multiple-day excursions. Call extension 4200 to speak to the concierge and arrange your bicycle adventure.
Santa Fe is one of the largest art markets in the United States and is home to more galleries than any other city of its size. While many are located downtown and around the Plaza, Canyon Road - with over 100 galleries and studios - is also a must-do. This colorful and fun milelong walk is filled with charming adobe buildings, hidden gardens and outdoor sculptures. Check with us for information on current art walks, openings and art happenings. There are more than a dozen world-class museums in Santa Fe with collections specializing in international folk art, Native American arts and culture, Spanish Colonial art, New Mexico history, and the fine and contemporary arts. And, of course, there is the famed Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Throughout the year, each museum hosts special openings and events that we can share with you. Ask our concierge about the four-day pass to five museums.
Complimentary docent-led art and history tours of La Fonda begin at 10:30 am Wednesday through Saturday and last one hour. If interested, please sign up with the concierge. The tours are free. Extension 4200.
