MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Townsville City Council is proud to present Strand Ephemera 2011.

Strand Ephemera has established itself as a highlight in the cultural calendar. Presented every two years in September it is eagerly awaited by the local community, as well as attracting people from across Australia.

Running from 2–12 September, featuring 36 artworks from 77 artists, plus performances, workshops, lectures and tours, an event of this magnitude succeeds because of the efforts of many people. Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is the organiser, supported by other sections within council. The major funding partner is Xstrata through their Xstrata Community Program North Queensland. Xstrata has a close working relationship with the gallery, supporting a number of the gallery initiatives, and all are grateful for their involvement.

I would also like to acknowledge the large band of volunteers as well as local businesses who play their part in making this an event for the whole community.

I urge you to make your way to Strand Ephemera to experience the magnificent creativity of artists, to celebrate our vibrant cultural life and an outdoor lifestyle second to none.

This is the 6th incarnation of Strand Ephemera, an event that began in 2001 and then became a biennial exhibition from that time. Numerous names were considered, but Strand Ephemera stuck. It was quirky enough to be memorable, and led to inventive mispronunciations, my favourite being “Strand Euphoria”.

The impetus for the exhibition was twofold: to provide opportunities for regionally-based artists and to give council and the broader Townsville public an idea of the possibilities of public art. At that time the Queensland Government had announced a 2% for public art program creating a massive funding possibility and regionally-based artists expressed interest in improving their competitiveness. Strand Ephemera was the opportunity for these artists to hone their skills and compare and contrast their work within a national context at a local venue. The focus on “ephemera” encouraged artists to investigate inexpensive materials, for a “short-lived” exhibition of around 10 days.

Each exhibition we develop has a point of difference. This year you can expect a more festival-type event. Pam Lane has relocated from Hinchinbrook and will put her particular stamp on the public program. We have always managed to incorporate some performing arts, working with a range of companies within the community. This year we will collaborate with Full Throttle, and liaise with Martyn Coutts responsible for the success of the Visible City project in Melbourne to present an added dimension.

This is always one of my favourite events, and the one that has the greatest positive response from the community. It is an extraordinary amount of work. My

thanks to the 77 artists who make this event; to the gallery team and volunteers who work tirelessly to present this event; and to our sponsors and supporters for their ongoing belief in Strand Ephemera.

Girringun Artists are from nine Aboriginal tribes represented by Girringun Aboriginal Corporation. The traditional country of these groups ranges roughly from Mission Beach including the coastal islands to Rollingstone, west to Ravenshoe and Greenvale.

Bagu, a mystical spirit of fire, would throw the Jiman (firestick) across the sky and a trail of fire would follow. These mixed media bagu are a contemporary development from the traditional quite portable firemaker which was made of wood and painted with ochres.

Cyclone YASI had and continues to have a profound effect upon the lives of north Queenslanders. Just as the name YASI may be inverted, this installation ISAY aims to convey the feelings and experiences of those who encountered that event.

With passion for travel, and fascination for different cultures and environment, my art generally focuses on these themes. I use a diverse range of techniques and media including welded steel, fused glass and ceramics.

Acknowledging traditional inhabitants of the land Many Hands celebrates our community’s history and culture with hoop pine representing community and hands recognising the contribution of those arriving since European settlement. The Kaleidoscope is a metaphor for newcomers viewing our city with ‘new eyes’.

A silversmith since early 1990’s Douglas’ milieu as silversmith/micro-sculptor constantly integrates natural and found elements. She regularly shows in group and solo exhibitions with commissions on public art projects in recent years.

This installation is my interpretation of a traditional Zen garden. The patterns in the sand depict the impermance of nature. Zen-Ephemera is dedicated to Townsville’s sister cities in Japan.

Cyclone Yasi – contribute to AbC Open’s Aftermath community recovery project

Did you survive Cyclone Yasi? Do you have a photo from before, during or after Cyclone Yasi that you’d like to share? It can be on a usb, disc or on your digital camera or smart phone. We’d love to see your photo and hear your story of surviving Cyclone Yasi and what the recovery has been like in the aftermath. With your permission we’ll upload your photo to the ABC Open Camera Club on Flickr and record your story to share it online.

Photobooth: “My dad always told me...”

Come along to ABC Open photobooth and celebrate Father’s Day by sharing some of your father’s wisdom with us! It’s really simple – finish the sentence “My dad always told me...” on one of our chalk boards and step into the photobooth to have your photo taken. With your permission, we’ll upload your photo to the ABC Open Camera Club in Flickr. From there you can download the photo and share it with friends and family on Facebook! Look out for ABC Open photobooth projections on festival evenings.

STRANd ALiVE

Strand Ephemera in 2011 incorporates a project that explores “live art” activities through a collaboration with Full Throttle Theatre Company and a small selection of enthusiastic volunteers.

Strand aLive activities seek to engage with Strand Ephemera visitors in a manner that blurs the boundary between the artist and the audience. Expect to be surprised and entertained as we lead you on misguided tours and pop up in unexpected places.

This project was inspired by Visible City, the keynote project of the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2010. With the support of Regional Arts Development Funding, Martyn Coutts, the initiator of Visible City was contracted to come up and assist in the initial brainstorming sessions.

The project is intended to increase the audience’s appreciation of contemporary practice, both visual arts and performance.

And thank you to the audience for being a part of it. This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

Throughout Strand Ephemera, photos of Strand aLive Award recipients will be exhibited in Perc Tucker Regional Gallery stairwell exhibition space.

Townsville Seniors Flashmob

Performing at random locations throughout the event, Townsville Seniors will be spontaneously bursting into song. The audience is invited to join them.

Footprints – with Sue berry (Strand Park)

Bring items that represent you, your community or environment to fill a large 1.5m footprint on the ground. You may wish to bring things from nature, or from home. All items can be collected at the end of the day.

Sebastian Di Mauro - Permanent and ephemeral public art

Sebastian di Mauro

Also acting as judge at this year’s event, Di Mauro is a Senior Lecturer at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University and an established public artist. Since 1987 he has held over 45 solo exhibitions and his work has been included in over 100 group exhibitions throughout Australia, Europe and Asia.

Di Mauro has completed a number of public art commissions. His first commission was completed for 175 Eagle Street, Brisbane in 2002. He has also undertaken a major public art commission for 33 Charlotte Street, Brisbane and created an artwork in 2005 for the Brisbane Magistrates Court, Queensland. He has collaborated with architect Alice Hampson on several public art projects including Logan Community Health Centre and Gabba Members Area (Gabba Cricket Ground). In Adelaide Di Mauro completed a commission in 2006 for Taylor, Cullity and Lethlean Landscape Architects and in 2011 he completed an ephemeral public artwork for the Adelaide City Council.

daniel Wallwork

Wallwork’s practice is strongly influenced by contemporary car culture and street or graffiti art. Wallwork is one of the founders and current director of artist run initiative Upholstery

Contemporary Arts in Cairns. He was also a recent co-mentor in the temporary public art project Changing Lanes in Cairns.

Daniel has exhibited extensively since 2000 with his work included in both solo and group exhibitions all over Australia. His work can be found in both public and private collections including Artbank, Cairns Regional Gallery, Ipswich Regional Gallery and Gold Coast City Gallery. He has recently completed a commissioned public artwork project for the Cairns Regional Airport and his installation “earth fish” featured in Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi in 2010.

Exhibiting Artists

A selection of exhibiting artists will present slideshows in a Speed Pecha Kucha format (18 slides at 8 seconds each) offering an insight into their arts practice and the process and motivation that led to their involvement in Strand Ephemera.

Artistic Excellence Award

This year the event offers a $10,000 Artistic Excellence award to artist/s selected by the Judge. The winning artist will be announced at the event opening on Friday 2 September.

People’s Choice Award

Vote for your favourite artwork!

The most popular artwork, as judged by Strand Ephemera visitors, will be presented with the $2,000 People’s Choice Award, proudly sponsored by Glenda Lewin.

Voting closes 6pm Monday 12 September 2011.

The winning artist will be announced after the event closure.

Pink Piano d’wheels

Jan Hynes’s 2009 Strand Ephemera entry Pink Piano will again be on The Strand. This time it will move daily to different locations. Musicians and enthusiasts will be conducting impromptu performances and we invite you to do the same.
