O

ur TownTaster Family would like to wish you and your family a very Happy & Blessed New Year! We have been overwhelmed by the response we have had to our first issue. The outpouring of support and gratitude from readers and restaurants all around town has been overwhelming. We are so pleased that you have found our “tasty” new magazine helpful, resourceful and fun to read. Over the past two months, we have learned a lot from our readers – what they like, what they don’t and what they are looking for. In fact, a reader once asked me for an extra copy to give to a family member coming into town for the holidays. He also mentioned that when they had asked him what places were around to eat, he couldn’t think of more than a few recommendations since he always visits the same restaurants. Some food for thought…Many times we find ourselves going to the same places over and over. While patronizing your favorite restaurant often is wonderful, why not expand your territory to try something new? Our community is brimming with those “Hidden Treasures” just waiting for you to come in so they can WOW you with their excellent food & service. We also recognize that many of our readers are on the look out for healthier places to dine. Don’t miss our Healthy Dining article on pages 20-21 to see what we found. Again, we thank you for being a part of our dream to deliver a truly “tasty” publication on a topic so near and dear to our heart. Please take part in our survey on page 19 to help us know you better. After all, you know what we are all about. Our motto says it all...

Farm Fresh

Take a look around you… Most of us lead fast-paced lives and are overwhelmed by the hustle-bustle of driving around town to and from school and work each day. Have you ever stopped to think about what is right outside in your own backyard? Nestled between major city streets and right off main highways lay the many farms that supply us with the food we eat everyday. It is important to be educated about what is in season. Here are some tips about eating fresh: • •

Talk to your produce manager about what’s in season Eating fruits and vegetables that are in season & grown in America are your healthiest and safest option What a lot of people don’t realize by eating things out of season or from a different country is that they don’t have the food safety requirements that we do in America in regards to pesticides, insecticides, and harvest crew sanitation. Often times, frozen fruits and vegetables will have an American label/ company on them, but the small print on the back will tell where the fruits/vegetables are really grown (fresh fruits & vegetables are your healthiest/ safest option) Tips provided by O’Brien Family Farms, Bradenton

Just take the time to look at labels and be aware of where your produce is coming from. Look a little further than the city lights and you will be amazed at what is right around the corner. Take a trip to a local farm near you and learn what seasonal items are available. There is something scrumptious about eating a fruit or vegetable that was just picked...

Comments:

“We thought that the food was excellent. Huge variety so there is something for everyone, and for people like me that enjoy just about anything, the whole menu sounded delicious. Ceviche was a fun and interesting place to eat. This would be a great place to bring larger groups, but we also had a great time with just two of us!”

Champiñones De Sevilla; Codillo De Cordero The whole menu is unique in that it is tapas style, so each person orders 2 or more dishes and everyone can share.

Healthy Dining Happy New Year! Yes the holidays are behind us, whether you like it or not. With the fresh start of a new year – most of us fall into one of two categories. For some, the flip of the calendar means another new year resolution to get a little healthier and alter eating habits or just shed a few of those holiday pounds… On the other hand, you may be one who considers yourself a “healthy eater” all year round but are feeling a little guilty for over-indulging once or twice (come on be honest now) and are ready to cleanse your body with some of Mother Nature’s finest foods. Whatever the case may be, you don’t have to forgo eating out to be healthy. We are all on the same page here… If you are reading our magazine – you LOVE food like we do. So how do we tackle this lofty goal of eating healthy and still be true to our passion for great food? Believe it or not, it is easier than you may think. You CAN enjoy a great meal at your favorite restaurant, or a tasty treat here and there. It all boils down to making the right choices and knowing what you are ordering. When it comes to chain restaurants, one of the best things you can do it visit their website before you walk out the door and browse the menu. Most will even have their nutritional information posted so you can know exactly what you are going to order and feel good that you wont be over indulging. Do you have dietary restrictions? Most restaurants include vegetarian and/or gluten free options right on their menu. If not, be sure to call ahead or ask your waiter what options they can offer you. Local restaurant owners know it is important to listen to their customers. Menus everywhere are popping up with a plethora of choices from vegan to vegetarian, gluten free to dairy free, and

with the freshest local ingredients grown right in our county! We went on a search to find those restaurants that have plenty to offer. We were pleasantly surprised by all of those restaurants out there that are concerned with putting healthy options on their menus that will make you return again and again. Who is on the forefront of the “healthy dining” radar? We are glad you asked! Organic/ local grown produce – From the farm to your plate! Nothing beats knowing that the food on your plate came from around the block and was grown with good old TLC. If you crave a fresh lunch full of soups, salads, sandwiches & wraps, go see Kim at Charisma Café in the Village of the Arts. She will knock your socks off with her famous soups garnished with fresh herbs from her garden. Carr’s Corner Café on Tamiami Trail near the airport will also have what you are looking for. When you go to Carr’s, owner Sharon Carr will probably be hard at work prepping all the local organic produce she just picked up from the farmer’s market. If you find yourself near Gulf Gate, slide on over to Chez Sylvie et Fils for some organic French wine and fabulous cuisine. If you are still concerned with finding the perfect salad on a menu– build your own with a vast range of fresh ingredients at Fast & Fresh. Vegetarian / Gluten-Free – Seeking out vegetarian, vegan & gluten-free dishes isn’t hard if you go to Michael Johns in Bradenton or Jason’s Deli in Sarasota. And did someone say pizza? Vertoris Pizza is committed to bringing a healthy spin on their pies with vegan pizzas, soy cheese, daiya cheese and gluten free / whole-wheat crust options. Raw / Vegan – Finding a great place that serves raw cuisine can be a challenge. But look no further… Simon’s Coffee House is equipped with what you are looking for! Chef Scott Nuss has the education and experience to whip up a perfect raw or vegan meal that will blow you away! And if you need a quick pick-me-up – try a wheatgrass shot, protein shake or some organic juice. Tasty / Healthy Treats – We all need to indulge our sweet tooth once in a while and SunniBunni hits the spot! You will be satisfied with non-fat frozen yogurt full of beneficial cultures and covered in fresh, seasonal, organic fruits & toppings.

Simply Strawberry

G

rowing up in Florida, winter was a time to look forward to. Not because it was the start of cooler weather, but be-

cause if was a sign that strawberry season had begun. Strawberry shortcake, homemade strawberry ice cream and

chocolate dipped strawberries… the list goes on. You can agree that strawberries are one of those simple pleasures in life. These pretty little fruits are a pure joy to just sit and snack on!

In Florida, strawberry season runs from November to April. Mainly grown from the West Coast to the middle of the state

from Bradenton to Plant City. However, you can still find them almost year round in California from Watsonville down to San Diego and into Baja, Mexico. Interestingly, berry plants are raised in higher altitude nurseries, then dug out of the ground and shipped to growers to plant.

There are many local farms that offer customers to come in

and pick their own. A fun afternoon outing or a learning experience for the kids, who can resist popping a few in their mouth

as they are delicately pulled off of the bushes! Local farms with U-Pick options are O’Brien Family Farm, Hydro-Taste Farms, Hunsader Farms, Eden Farms & Hydro Harvest Farms. See the list of farms on page 9 for the locations near you.

Strawberry Smooth Parfaits These smooth light parfaits are sure to please. An original creation by one of our readers, Joan Hildebrandt

Recipe Box

Angel food cake 2 cups fresh strawberries 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 16 oz. cottage cheese ½ cup sugar 1 Tbsp. vanilla Red food coloring (optional) 1 cup whipping cream 6 Tbsp. powdered sugar 2 Tbsp. Amaretto

22

In blender, place cream cheese, cottage cheese, sugar and vanilla. Blend until smooth. Add a few drops of red food coloring, if desired, until mixture is pink. In metal bowl (put bowl & beaters in freezer for a few minutes before using), whip cream until soft peaks form. Add sugar and Amaretto. Break small amount of Angel food cake into bottom of six (6) parfait glasses. Top the cake with half of the cheese mixture. Next, add half of the strawberries and half of the whipping cream. Repeat layers. Refrigerate at least one hour before serving. Makes 6 parfaits.

Strawberries are the only fruit with seeds on the outside
