elcome to Toy World’s special preview supplement for the Spring Fair International 2016. We hope it will help you to plan your trip to the show and give you a few ideas about who you should visit at the event. It’s all change at Spring Fair this year, as the children’s gifts, toy and gadgets offering will be moving to a new location. Having resided in Hall 3 for a number of years, 2016 will see the category move back to Hall 5, where it will be located alongside a broad selection of general giftware exhibitors. This move has been welcomed by many exhibitors, who feel that it gives them the opportunity to showcase their product to the broadest possible cross-section of buyers. Indeed, retailers attending the show benefit from cross-over buying opportunities from numerous different product categories. In addition to toys and gifts, the show also houses the UK’s largest presentation of greetings cards, gift-wrap and stationery products in Hall 3. The same hall is home to The Party Show, the only dedicated party show in the UK, featuring exhibitors who offer product for all the main party occasions, from Halloween to Christmas. This year also sees the introduction of The Wish List
toyworld The business magazine with a passion for toys
at www.springfair.com, a year-round product sourcing platform. The new Wish List functionality gives buyers the opportunity to save and print ‘shopping lists’ of their favourite items from a comprehensive database of Spring Fair exhibitors’ products. The search and select mechanism also provides valuable insight into trends, as the hottest products rise through the ranks and make it on to an increasing number of wish lists via thousands of unique users. Spring Fair portfolio director Nick Davison commented: “This is my first year at the helm of Spring Fair, having spent the past few years developing sister shows Autumn Fair and Glee, and I’m incredibly excited about the 2016 exhibition. Consultation with our customers revealed the need for certain modifications to the hall layout and access points to improve footfall, so we’ve implemented a raft of new changes to meet those requirements in 2016. I am committed to delivering the best possible event for all our customers.” The Toy World team will once again be attending Spring Fair, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible during the show. In the meantime, enjoy our in-depth preview of the event and for further information or to register to attend, you can visit www.springfair.com

pring Fair 2016 will feature a superb selection of children’s gifts, toys and gadgets in Hall 5 within the wider context of the exhibition. This sector of Spring Fair presents a comprehensive offering to suppliers and buyers with an interest in the children’s category of the gift market, with a vast array of products covered in this huge exhibition space. The hall will incorporate an array of products, from plush gifts, games, gadgets and traditional wooden toys, through to pocket money purchases, novelties, crafting kits and educational items. Retailers attending the show will also benefit from the unrivalled cross-over buying opportunities from 14 different product categories. Children’s gifts, toys and gadgets will be located alongside a huge presentation of general giftware in Hall 5, with even more gifts in Hall 4, contemporary gifts in Hall 6 and the UK’s largest presentation of greetings cards, giftwrap, stationery and party products a short step away in Hall 3. Hall 3 is home to The Party Show, the only dedicated party show in the UK, where everyone in this vibrant industry comes together under one roof. All the party occasions you could possibly think of are covered by the event, from Halloween to Christmas. Licensed products will also be big at the show, with Star Wars, The Avengers, Minecraft, Disney characters, Spiderman and Batman all trending, while personalised plush and Segway are also coming to the fore as trends to watch. Some of the biggest names in this sector of the show are planning major and exclusive new product launches, with more details to be announced. To help serve the online community, this year sees the introduction of The Wish List at www.springfair.com, a 24/7, year-round product sourcing platform. The new Wish List functionality gives buyers the opportunity to save and print ‘shopping lists’ of their favourite items from a comprehensive database of Spring Fair
exhibitors’ products. The search and select mechanism also provides great insight into trends as the hottest products rise through the ranks and make it onto more and more wish lists via thousands of unique users. Monitoring trends throughout the year has also confirmed that licensing is still big news in the gift market, with licensed products selling well across all major categories. A dedicated Licensing section of the Spring Fair website helps bring this aspect of gifting to the fore, with countless hot properties to choose from, including Star Wars and Minions. With a total of 300,000 new products at the show across 14 categories, tens of thousands of buyers from around the world are expected to attend, including the majority of the top retail brands. 44% of visitors do not attend any other trade event and 75% of all visitors place orders with suppliers as a

result of their attendance. Spring Fair portfolio director Nick Davison commented: “This is my first year at the helm of Spring Fair, having spent the past few years developing sister shows Autumn Fair and Glee, and I’m incredibly excited about the 2016 exhibition. “Consultation with our customers revealed the need for certain modifications to the hall layout and access points to improve footfall, so we’ve implemented a raft of new changes to meet those requirements in 2016. I would like to thank everyone involved for their support of the show and helping to make our plans a reality, I am committed to delivering the best possible event for all our customers. We’re all now looking forward to a great show, where everyone who attends will see some fantastic new products from both their existing and new suppliers.” For more information visit www.springfair.com

Spring Fair 2016
Shaping up the show Emily Ansell Elfer speaks to Nick Davison, portfolio director for Spring Fair, to find out more about what visitors can expect from this year’s show. What is the uptake of stands like compared to 2015 in the children’s toys, gifts and gadgets sector? Hall 5 of The NEC is one of the biggest individual exhibition halls in Europe, and for the 2016 show it will be packed with gifts and children’s gifts, toys and gadgets. At the time of going to press this particular hall was almost sold out and we’re delighted to be welcoming so many loyal customers and fantastic new exhibitors to the show floor in 2016.
How are the 2016 show preparations shaping up? Spring Fair is the largest retail trade exhibition taking place in the UK, attracting far more visitors and exhibitors than any other event of its kind. Our exhibitor numbers and size of the show generally are stable, although you do see fluctuations in individual sectors from year to year, depending on market conditions in that area. In 2016 we’ll have one of the biggestever presentations and the children’s gifts, toys and gadgets sector of the show is strong and stable.
The crossover buying potential of Spring Fair is one of its key attributes; what steps have been taken to emphasise this in the upcoming show? Spring Fair exhibitors have access to the country’s largest audience of retail buyers, plus many more from overseas, which make this a prime event for export as well as the home market. Visitors can look forward to sourcing from hundreds of thousands of new product launches from the best UK and international suppliers across 14 different product categories. As we cover so many sectors, there are
fantastic cross-over buying opportunities for all categories of retailer, from the smallest post offices and convenience stores to the biggest multiple retailers and luxury department stores. This is obviously an attraction for exhibitors as well, who are hoping to reach into new territories when they participate in the show. Most people know how big The NEC is and we’ll be taking up every hall for Spring Fair from 7th-11th February. It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming trip for retailers, though. The show is carefully laid out so that related sectors are in close proximity, to facilitate the visitor experience and cross-over buying. We also encourage visitors to carefully browse our website before attending the show, as this is a really useful way for buyers to plan their visit and plot an efficient route around the exhibition.
What new features will attendees notice at 2016’s show? There are some changes taking place to Spring Fair in 2016, including a few hall moves and re-edits. The presentation of children’s gifts, toys and gadgets works very well in Hall 5, however, where it is perfectly aligned with general giftware, so this part of the show will remain in its customary position.
What is it that makes Spring Fair a key event in the toy industry calendar? Around 3,000 of the best British and international suppliers, including hundreds that are new to Spring Fair for 2016, will present up to 300,000 new products across 14 categories. It is far and away the biggest and most important trade event in the
Toy World 06
British retail buying calendar. The children’s gifts, toys and gadgets sector in Hall 5 has anything and everything you might possibly want to give as a gift to a child, including a beautiful presentation of traditional wooden toys suitable for higher-end stores, plus gadgets, games, plush, educational and crafting kits, licensed brands, impulse purchases, you name it, it’s there.
Do you have many new companies exhibiting in the toy hall? Why do you think they’ve decided to sign up? There are many new exhibitors in toys, including Cubbies, Wooky Entertainment, Doudou et Compagnie, Addcor and Huggables. They join hundreds of regular exhibitors, including major suppliers such as Gibsons, Cheatwell Games, Ty UK, Tobar Group and HTi. All our exhibitors are keen to access the largest retail buying audience available to the trade in this country, not only tens of thousands of British retailers but buyers from over 120 countries worldwide. Toy companies in particular welcome the chance to reach out to gift shops and other non-specialist toy retailers that they may not be able to access at toy-specific events.

Spring fever Toy World spoke to a handful of this year’s Spring Fair exhibitors to take a peek at what new products they’ll be bringing to the show, and to hear how the last year has been for them. We asked the exhibitors the following questions: What was your biggest success of 2015? What will be your most important exhibit at Spring Fair? Will there be any potential surprises or special deals on offer at the show? What do you think will be the biggest challenge of 2016 for the UK toy trade?
Helen Webster Copywrite Designs
2015 has been a fantastic year for Copywrite due to three big licensing successes across the year: Disney’s Frozen, Despicable Me / Minions and, more recently, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Copywrite’s licensed portfolio includes Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First, Marvel’s Spiderman and Avengers, Star Wars, Despicable Me, My Little Pony, Peppa Pig and Thomas & Friends. There are also some exciting new licensed offerings coming through which will all be showcased at Spring Fair, including Disney’s Descendants, which is now getting traction with retailers, as well as a stationery and sticker range for Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War movie. Copywrite will also be exhibiting its stationery, creative play and sticker display based on The Secret Life of Pets movie. The final two prominent displays at Spring Fair will be new sticker ranges for the Finding Dory movie and DreamWorks’ Trolls movie. There will be several exciting deals on offer to our customers at the show, and all of these will be detailed to them on the stand. While the UK toy industry looks to be in great shape in 2015, there are a growing number of challenges which are in common with all retail suppliers. Major challenges already in play include the issues surrounding exchange rates, exports and sourcing in China. I also think the ever-increasing dominance of online shopping and the onward march of the discounters will be gaining more attention as time goes on. The discounters bring a whole new set of challenges for toy companies in terms of whether, or how, to supply these retailers and with which brands or product portfolios. There are also questions surrounding what the impact of supplying the discounters will be on their current customer base and how to manage the discounters’ more fast fashion approach to retailing in general.
Katie Parkin Branded Distribution
Our biggest success of 2015 was the 3DlightFX Minions 3D wall deco lights, which have captured consumers and retailers’ imagination alike. We have demand for bigger retail displays, so we will be supporting the range with an FSDU promotion into spring 2016. We have secured the Ghostbusters licence into 2016, and will be exhibiting our range of 3D wall deco light concepts at the show. We will have an exclusive show offer on the launch of 3DlightFX Mini’s wall deco lights, which include Star Wars, My Little Pony, Minions and Paw Patrol. For full size 3DlightFX licences, Star Wars, Minions and Batman V Superman, we will be giving free FSDUs with demonstration models on header cards, to support in-store display. Bricks and mortar versus internet selling will be the biggest challenge in 2016. The internet can be a wonderful thing, driving incremental sales to local businesses. However, the challenges are an oversaturated marketplace on third party platforms such as Amazon or eBay, which can lead to price wars and devalued brands, in turn eroding retailer margins should they be forced to price match.
Iain Morgan Bladez Toyz
In 2015, we broke the Australian market which has had a great impact on the business. We teamed up with Australian distributor Kidzwiz, and have secured top selling lines in large retailers such as Big W and Meyer Diamond. At Spring Fair we will be launching a new and exciting addition to our RC Inflatable range, BB-8 droid from the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens film release. He’s set to be the star of the show. As always, we’ll be offering a cracking show deal that will be top secret until the event. Visitors should come and see the stand to claim their deal. The difficulties I think we will face in 2016 will be increases in labour costs in China, the global political uncertainties and erratic exchange rates that fluctuate regularly, making it difficult to lock into costings.

In terms of our in-stock items, the new versions of both the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) and the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) have proven very popular with customers. With pre-order sales, we were blown away by the popularity of the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston). We simply did not expect the level of interest, reaching almost 400 pieces in a single weekend. We are working away on a number of new product prototypes, which we are aiming to have ready for display at the show and for which we will be taking orders. In addition to our existing licences, we will have some new licence announcements which we are very excited about. The biggest challenge for us has been Star Wars. With the release of Episode VII, the huge popularity of toys from the film and the first of the spin off movies due at the end of 2016, we will all have our work cut out to not only attract those all important new sales, but also to keep our existing customers interested and purchasing. In-between Episode VII and Rogue One, there’s also a plethora of epic fantasy action movies. It is sure to be an interesting, and busy, year.
2015 was great year for Pyramid’s licensed portfolio, which included Marvel, Minions and Star Wars to name a few. Pyramid’s biggest success for 2015 was the launch of the extensive Star Wars range across the wide variety of Pyramid products we have to offer. These included stationery, mugs, wall art, accessories and gifting. The product range highlights include our retro framed movie artwork, exclusive gift sets and new innovative Star Wars: Episode VII products. The biggest challenge in 2016 for the toy trade will be the competitive nature of the market, with lots of big brands and great products competing for retailer space.

Puzzles and Play
Both Heye and Castorland jigsaws have been huge for us this year. As Heye was already well-known within the UK, we have seen good volumes all year. However, with Castorland puzzles the volumes have increased dramatically in Q4, especially the kids puzzles which we thought may struggle against licensed products. We are launching two new ranges at Spring Fair including a range of Paw Patrol puzzles and toys. We have already received interest on these from some of our national customers as Paw Patrol is certain to be a must-have licence for 2016. We have also completed a full redesign of our Plus Hearts packaging which is now much cleaner and comes with full English instructions. A new FSDU will also be available for the Plush Hearts range to make it easier for customers to stock the product as a complete range. We will have show deals available on some of our jigsaw ranges and craft items. Getting customers to commit to stock early and forecasting accurately for Q4 is a big challenge. A number of our larger customers doubled their spring forecasts this year which caused supply problems in the run up to Christmas, meaning that we could not keep up on some key lines.
John Pryke The Games Gang
2015 saw the official launch of The Games Gang as a new company. Focusing on design, packaging and playability, the company brings a new approach to the traditional toy sector. Last year, we were proud to unveil our pioneering Six Fold games board, Switch and Move dice and new packaging concepts. 2016 sees the launch of the JigpiX jigsaw range, Optical Illusion board games and puzzles and two new family board games, HangMen and Hexi-Connect. JigpiX has the ability to rearrange the 300 and 520-piece jigsaw puzzles to create millions of face combinations. Each JigpiX piece is the same exact shape, but each has various degrees of colour graduation on one side and emoji symbols on the reverse. When the pieces are locked together, any face can be created. The key to the puzzle is the sophisticated software hiding within the JigpiX app, which quickly produces a grid showing how to reassemble the pieces on the supplied layout grid sheet to bring images to life. The Games Gang team will be armed with tablets on the stand to demonstrate JigpiX. They will be taking pictures of visitors and transforming their faces on screen from the pieces on the JigpiX box. Visitors who place an order at the show will receive an additional promotional discount. The continued rise of internet giants like Amazon and other online marketplaces has taken an ever increasing share in toy sales. The challenge faced by many today is finding the balance between traditional retail, new emerging retail and internet sales in an effort to turn the tide.
Toy World 13
The Irish Fairy Door Company
Our biggest success in 2015 was the penetration of the UK market and the groundswell created by the top product influencers in the toy industry. This all led to fantastic sales, strong brand recognition, multiple awards for our products and, most importantly, tens of thousands of homes found for fairies. As well as a number of limited edition doors, at Spring Fair we’ll also be showcasing our new Playtime and Garden Accessory packs, colourful new decals and an exciting new addition to the range, our come-to-life jigsaw. Some lucky retailers will be leaving the show with our human fairies booked into their store for some high quality Q4 kids’ entertainment. They’ll be jetting in from Ireland to help bring the magic to life in stores in the runup to Christmas 2016. An ongoing issue for many brands is counterfeiting and the rise of copycat or knock-off products. While it’s incredibly unfair to brands and inventors, such items can also be disappointing to consumers due to the poor quality.
Jeremy Pateman Tactic Games
In terms of volume, the biggest success for us has been the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Kimble game. The most important exhibit at Spring Fair will be the dead certain volume game, Crazy Café. The show will see us offering free stock deals for the independent sector. I believe that the biggest challenge for the UK toy trade will be the ever growing challenge of manufactured cost prices, as the toy and game market is becoming increasingly consumer price sensitive.

Copywrite Designs Hall 11, Stand K21-L20 01908 618 811 | www.copywritedesigns.co.uk Copywrite Designs is particularly excited to be exhibiting new licensed stationery, creative play, colouring and activity and sticker ranges for 2016. To give product ranges real value-for-money appeal, Copywrite spends a lot of time on new product development and design. Bestselling products are also re-visited every season to see if there is anything to be done to make the products more attractive or better value for money for retailers and consumers alike. It is this passion for creating, designing and sourcing the best possible product ranges, featuring the absolute best licences, that sets Copywrite apart. Copywrite’s licence portfolio includes licences and product categories that prove everyday staples for retailers; licences such as Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First, Ultimate Spiderman and Avengers Assemble, Star Wars and My Little Pony, along with other bestselling brands like Peppa Pig and Thomas & Friends. These are the building blocks of any successful licensed product offering and will maximise dayto-day sales as well as seasonal opportunities like summer activity, Halloween and Christmas. New for January 2016 will be Copywrite’s Ultimate Spiderman creative play and stationery offering, a product range that features new product development and a new design that ties the entire range into the new Ultimate Spiderman versus The Sinister Six TV series that will hit screens in spring. The new Disney’s Descendants stationery offering is building from the consumer up rather than retailer down which is an interesting twist. The Descendants TV movie launched on Disney Channel back in September 2015 and a second movie has already been slated. Marvel’s much anticipated new movie Captain America: Civil War will be another major launch in March 2016. Due to hit UK cinemas on 29th
April followed by a DVD release in August, the movie will feature favourite Marvel characters and Spiderman and Copywrite’s range of stationery and stickers will feature lots of added value and novelty features that will guarantee shelf appeal and high sales levels. The Secret Life of Pets will be released into UK cinemas in June 2016 and Copywrite has created a range of stationery, creative play and stickers that is already garnering plaudits from retailers. Launched in May, Copywrite’s range features new product formats and designs. Copywrite is also offering the UK the first and only official emoji stationery range, launching in 2016. Working with the official, registered emoji brand means the company can sell the only official emoji stationery range in combination

with the emoji logo and registered trademark. Another major for 2016 release will be Disney Pixar’s Finding Dory. Copywrite is offering is an array of sticker based items that will feature new novelty formats. The final major sticker product offering release from Copywrite in 2016 will be DreamWorks’ Trolls movie. Which is slated for an October 2016 release in the UK. The company is also launching a new Teletubbies creative play range in September 2016. Probably one of the most successful preschool licences of all time even before their triumphant return to CBeebies late last year, and Copywrite has just started work on the creative range offering.

Tactic Games will be unveiling new games such as Crazy Café, The Little Train Game, Junior Kimble, BowTilz, Colorology and many more. Crazy Café is a game for all the family which requires dexterity and skill for the more competitive players, but is also a fun game for everyone which can be won with just a little luck. Tactic Games’ Kimble Pop n’ Play game has been a core line for the company since 1967. Kimble has been available in many licensed and generic variations over the years, and now Tactic Games is launching a new version called Junior Kimble for a younger age demographic. Now youngsters who are three years old and over will be able to play the game, which has been redesigned employing a colour recognition game mechanic rather than the standard counting format. BowTilz is a twist on traditional dominoes. The domino tiles are shaped with four possible colours on each tile. Players can match one shape and colour, or in some cases multiple shapes and colours, to increase the amount of dominoes they can place on each turn. Tactic Games’ The Little Train game is a children’s board game with colourful wooden trains and a storyline. The game includes a free app which speaks to the children playing as part of the games mechanic. The players have to stop at the stations along the way to collect passengers and luggage. The game combines the social and educational elements of board games with an optional free digital enhancement.

Flying Gadgets
Hall 5, Stand H56 0844 209 2626 | www.flyinggadgets.com 2016 is set to be another success for the drone category of flying toys, and Flying Gadgets has secured distribution of the very best on offer. In addition to some four-rotor flying machines the range also includes the much-lauded DJI stable of consumer and prosumer cameraequipped flying machines from world leading manufacturer DJI. This includes three devices – the Standard, Advanced and Professional machines. Pitched straight into affordable territory, versus Advanced and Professional, the Standard looks very similar to both. With 25-minute flight time this unit is mostly on a par with its more expensive siblings. It has the same battery as the other two models, and retains the intelligent GPS-based return-to-home feature that brings it automatically back to its landing spot if users lose a control signal or simply choose not to fly it back manually. Photography-wise, it has a 12MP sensor and video resolution capabilities. Upon take off, the Standard automatically hovers in place, waiting for a command. It then effortlessly changes altitude or direction at the flick of a finger. When users want it to stop, it again hovers, awaiting their next instruction. One of the best flying cameras around, the Standard is agile, responsive and takes snaps in stills and video.
