The Spring Fair returns for 2019, featuring a huge selection of new lines from over 2,000 exhibitors. Toy World looks at what the show has to offer retailers looking to source toys and children’s gifts.
A
s a hub for some of the most innovative and inspiring designers, manufacturers and suppliers, Spring Fair will offer visitors the chance to source products to drive sales throughout 2019, including key gifting periods. Alison Graham, Spring Fair’s event director, commented: “Visitors to Spring Fair will have access to the latest products and trends for 2019, across 16 carefully curated show sectors. As always, we’ll be bringing together the most innovative products and the creative thinking of the trade, to have a real impact on the financial success of both retailers and exhibitors.” Children’s Gifts & Toys is a key sector for Spring Fair, home to a wide variety of companies offering product aimed at the kids’ market. This year, the spotlight will also shine on ToyFirst and NurseryFirst, Spring Fair’s new showcases for start-up toys exhibitors, offering access to product ranges new to the market. Alison commented: “2019 looks set to be an exciting year in the toy sector for both the licensed and original designs categories. 2019 will be a huge year for
major kids’ film franchises, with new Lego, Avengers and Frozen films all due out. Riding the wave of increased interest in memorabilia and toys associated with these films will be a major driver of profits over the coming 12 months.” Alison explained how the show aims to to offer buyers and industry professionals the chance to get hands-on with products when making selections: “As a trend-led showcase, we’re always keen to show visitors what’s going to be driving sales beyond 2019. It’s why we’re introducing our ToysFirst and NurseryFirst areas, giving a platform to the most cutting-edge toy makers. Spring Fair offers something the internet can’t provide: a place to see and touch the products. It’s also a valuable opportunity to speak directly to suppliers and compare options, whether you’re looking to stock your shop, your website, or just for inspiration.” Spring Fair will take place from 3rd-7th February at the NEC Birmingham. Over the next few pages, a selection of exhibitors showcase the new products that will be on display at the show.

A selection of companies exhibiting at Spring Fair spoke to Toy World about the new ranges that will be on show, what they are expecting from the event and the main focus for their business in 2019.

2018 has been a very fast-moving and successful year. We have had lots of exciting product launches - kicking off the year with the highly innovative Chrome latex balloon range was an amazing start. We launched two brand new web platforms: www. Qualatexeurope.com and www. Pioneerparty.com and hundreds of new balloon and party products. We have invested heavily in new product and process development, and are now launching new on-trend Qualatex balloon ranges every quarter, to great customer feedback. 2018 also saw us introduce a brand new digital custom print balloon service which has been very well received. We have enjoyed fantastic customer support of both new and key product ranges all through the year; at times we have even struggled to keep up with demand. On the operational side we have moved into a new expanded warehouse, and of course, like all businesses with European operations, we have spent quite some time looking at options surrounding Brexit and all its implications. Visitors to our two adjoining stands in Spring Fair Hall 5 will be able to see new Chrome Microfoil balloons for the first time, a perfect match for our Chrome latex; as well as a host of brand new trend-driven new balloon designs for 2019 and a significant expansion to our tableware ranges. Northstar Balloons will be also be fully-integrated onto our stand for 2019. As you’ll know if you’ve attended Spring Fair before, we also always strive to deliver amazing stand décor, practical retail solutions and inspirational displays, and the plans for this year are looking great. You can chat with world renowned Qualatex Instructors at our on-stand Education Centre and of course it’s also the first opportunity to collect our brand new 2019 catalogue. We love to catch up with our long-standing customers from all over Europe, who are now part of the Pioneer family. In addition, Spring Fair is also always a great place to meet new customers. We love talking to toy retailers about how we can help grow their business with balloons and partyware, and the team has some great case studies they can share. We have been fortunate to enjoy tremendous success at the last few Spring Fairs, so we very much hope to emulate that success again in 2019.
We are excited to show our Loungefly collection of bags and purses from strong brands like Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and Hello Kitty. Loungefly is a global leader of pop culture accessories, so Spring Fair is the ideal event to showcase our newest lines. We’ll also be bringing along a selection of our gifting products, including new ranges for The Little Mermaid and Toy Story. One of our newer products, Pop! & Tees (a collectors’ box with a stylised Funko t-shirt and an exclusive Pop! Vinyl figure) will also be on show. With so many key retailers attending the show – ones we already work with as well as potential new partners - it’s the perfect event for us to display our range and continue to develop the Loungefly brand and our gifting line. For us, Spring Fair is about brand exposure and we’re looking forward to presenting our products to new retailers and opening new and exciting accounts for Loungefly and gifting.

We have really reinvigorated our ranges in 2018, with the additions of complete accessory ranges which have proved popular with retailers looking to add value to their dress up ranges. The price points are really attractive too, so we have big plans to develop these lines further going forward. This year we will be launching our brand-new Pet Headbands, as well as our revamped Postie and Policeman costumes. The NEC is so central that we are able to see all of our existing customers during the show, as well as writing new business year on year, so it’s a must-attend for us every year. The Spring Fair welcomes a diverse visitor demographic, which is brilliant as it enables us to explore new retail channels. By the end of the show, we hope to have a full order book! Spring Fair is a great litmus test for new products.

Bertoy has seen strong growth during 2018 with some great new accounts coming on board who are buying into the ranges of Crocodile Creek, Mudpuppy and Tiger Tribe. At this year’s Spring Fair, we will be launching over 100 fantastic new items across all four brands. All new items live up to our reputation for excellent design and quality and we will welcome customers to our stand to see the benefits of these new items for themselves. Spring Fair is one of the most important shows following Nuremberg for Bertoy, and gives us the opportunity to showcase our new items to existing accounts, as well as introduce our ranges to new customers. Like all at all Fairs, it is important to catch up with existing accounts and keep building the partnerships. It is equally important is to meet with potential new customers, and at the end of the show we hope to have had positive discussions with all parties.

The last 12 months has proved to be extremely tough, with many outside factors affecting our operation. The unfortunate on-going closures of stores has obviously had a huge impact on sales. Credit for a number of national/key accounts has been withdrawn by our insurers, so we are left with the decision of either self-insuring or not supplying them at all. The devaluation of the GBP has also had impact on our bottom line. Adapting to the times is becoming vital. Our Independent sector is thriving with our sales agents smashing targets. Overseas business is growing, with our attention set on the Latin American market, and both our UK education and e-commerce business are increasing substantially. We have exhibited at Spring Fair for over a decade now and it keeps proving to be one of our best shows. It is important for us to show our products hands on, and exhibiting is the best way to do this. A puppet needs to be played with to be brought to life and this is just not possible from images online. We work very hard in producing a detailed catalogue and website, but actually feeling and interacting with our products is how clients understand why we are global leaders in design innovation, attention to detail and quality. We want to show the retail market why they should range our products. Spring Fair always brings buyers that know our products bring value to their business and want to refresh their offering. It is also a great place to meet to new customers, discuss going forward with existing ranges, learning what we can do better and hearing new product ideas. Nothing brings a business more pleasure than writing orders at a show. Follow-ups are of course imperative, but having lots of orders to process is high on our agenda.

We had an incredibly successful show at the Autumn Fair last September, so we wanted to continue meeting people in the retail space as we head into another exciting year. It therefore made perfect sense to book a stand at Spring Fair and we are looking forward to unveiling the new look Quirk! packaging, as well as showcasing Quirk! Monsters for the very first time. We can’t wait to show off our new spooky characters and see what the reaction is like. I am proud to say that I have watched the fanbase grow quickly over the last two years and I now have a series of 3 Quirk! titles in the market – Quirk!, Quirk! Legends and Quirk! Monsters. Quirk! is a fantastic card game for families that spreads a lot of joy and we love seeing the wonderful reviews it receives online and through social media PR. I therefore hope that by exhibiting at the Fair, we can extend the exposure of our game series to more buyers and stores who are looking for new family focused lines to stock in 2019. I am very excited to show visitors at the fair what Quirk! is all about so they can also see first-hand how beautiful the illustrations are and how easy it is to play the game.

2018 has been a good year for Cheatwell Games. Despite a difficult trading environment in the UK we have picked up a number of major new accounts. Coupled to this we have seen double digit growth overseas so, all in all, it’s been a very satisfying year. Cheatwell is unique insomuch as we create product that suits both the toy and the gift trade. Quirky and WTF? have been great sellers for us this year and these classily-packed card games will be joined by two new sister products: Big 6 and Read My Mind. Added to this we will be introducing a new trivia game, Quiz Bingo, and two new drinking games, Gargle and Nissed As A Pewt! Of course, there will be great new styles added to our top-selling Squeeze Popper range with Llama, Flamingo, Kitty, Narwhal and the TuttiFrutti series all joining the squad. Spring Fair is vital for us. Whilst we see our valued toy retailers at Olympia, we also meet gift retailers at the NEC. We will have meetings with a number of our international gift customers too who prefer Spring Fair to Nuremberg. Because we design products for two markets, we need two opportunities to show them off. If our exciting new range has gone down well and we have met a number of new customers, we will be well pleased. That said, it’s only a few days later that we are off to New York, then AIS and Toymaster. It’s all go!

We have seen significant sales growth this year. 7.4% like for like and 23.2% overall, due to new customers buying into and repeating on our core ranges. At Spring Fair this year, we will be presenting many new Giant Animal Hand warmers including a Glow in the Dark range. We will also be featuring new Microwaveable animals within our Cozy Warmers range and a new Cozy Baby range of baby blankets, musical toys, rattles and teethers. For toy retailers looking to diversify, we will also be featuring a new eco-friendly range of fleece blankets made from recycled plastic bottles and a range of bamboo coffee mugs. Spring Fair gives us the opportunity to show existing and potential customers our flexibility to meet their requirements, to ensure they sell large volumes without the need to hold a lot of stock. I hope we have demonstrated that our products and our customer service levels build partnerships with retailers to help them grow their business.

Feature Nothing but blue skies from now on Toy World spoke to Gavin Holden, Commercial Director, Blue Sky Designs, to discover what new ranges will be unveiled at Spring Fair, and what the show means to the company.

t Spring Fair this year, Blue Sky will be exhibiting in Hall 5, Stand 5H71. The company will be launching extended product ranges under its Skwisheez branding, following the recent success with its squishy pens. Taking 2018’s trend material and applying it to stationery has resulted in an exciting new sub-category, in which pens and notebooks
are fun to touch and play with. Gavin Holden explained that, although sales of squishy toys arguably appear to have peaked, demand for Blue Sky’s Skwisheez stationery is increasing, as applying the tactile material to stationery offers a longer lifespan than that of some toys. The company will be launching Jumbo Pens in lollipop style casing, mini collectible clip pens, plus A5 and A6 notebooks with Squishy characters. Blue Sky will also be offering a sneak peek at its first licensed Squishy products for Harry Potter and Smooshy Mushy, which they are very excited about. Gavin commented: “2018 was a bit of a roller coaster year for us, early on in 2018 the retail landscape was looking rather bleak, but the spring /summer months turned out to be our best ever, driven mainly by Harry Potter and the back to school period. Moving into Christmas trading we’ve seen strong growth in our novelty gift/toy areas especially with our fusion of squishy and stationery”. The company will also be showcasing a refreshed range of Harry Potter products covering stationery, bags and lunchware, offering classic designs alongside a younger Kawaii style across all three categories. Blue Sky is particularly excited about the launch of its extended bag range, featuring a holdall bag, messenger bags and a Hedwig backpack. This spring, the everexpanding range of Melterz melting characters welcomes a Narwhal and Stegosaurus into the family. A spin off of Blue Sky’s global best-selling Miracle Melting brand, Melterz sets feature cute characters which kids can build, before watching them melt and then building them up again using specialist putty. For 2019, the new Melterz collection is supplied in mini sweetie-style bags and rummage drawer display units. “The novelty toy ranges such as Miracle Melting, Ringlings and Skiwsheez will come in
new, stackable display units,” explained Gavin. “Spring Fair will also see the launch of our exciting new game Chopstick Racer, which visitors can come and play on the stand, testing their chopstick skills against the clock.” With the new family game, players are given a series of place mat games and challenges to complete against the clock, using their chopstick skills. This highly addictive game comes packaged in a takeaway-style box. Blue Sky considers Spring Fair to be the biggest trade show of the year for its product categories. “It’s our opportunity to pull together and present all of our hard work in the preceding months on product development,” said Gavin. “Spring Fair is also important for gathering feedback; we really value the face to face time we have with our key customers, discussing what has sold well, what they think of our new product launches, current trading and how we can continue to improve to meet their needs.” “By the time the Spring Fair draws to a close, we hope to have spent quality time with our loyal customers and to have engaged with new customers,” he continued. “We hope they will all leave the show feeling excited about the many retail opportunities we can offer for the rest of the year, across multiple new product launches. The Siku brand continues to go from strength to strength with successful growth this year and looks forward to continued growth in 2019. This success has been built as a result of an increasing number of stockists in a variety of retail stores, as well as new releases. For the first time there will be a January release in 2019, which will give stockists a chance to refresh their range in January, so that the enthusiasts have new models to collect early in the year. There will be further releases in March, June and September. Visitors can look forward to a feast of new arrivals from an ever-growing array of toy categories, including an extension to Marbel’s original and much-loved Kitchen & Food range which aims to capture a child’s love of food and cooking and satisfies the desire to imitate. Colouring just got more creative with ColourMazing, the new patented way to colour. Kids use the pens and watch the ink spread without going out of the lines. The successful Blopens range welcomes new products at key price points including a Toy Story 4 Easel, Creative Eggs, a special Rainbow Set and Blopens Squeezy, a great starter kit for tiny hands. Pixelo lets young artists create vibrant, colourful artwork with incredible dotted effects. The line now includes Pixelo Cuties, cute and quirky character sheets to colour in with pastel dots. eZee Beads has added Surprise Bags at pocket money prices; kids can collect and create cute designs with six characters in each series. With the Eraser Studio range, children can also make their own erasers with mouldable magic clay. With the new Paw Patrol Glowpad, children simply use the neon markers to draw and then switch it on to see the pictures glow and transform. The My Little Pony Glitterizz set lets them personalise pony pictures with colourful glitter. Pre-schoolers can bring their imaginations to life with the Play Stuff range. The range of dough kits all come with fold-out play areas, which are wipe clean and have illustrated play scenes. The kits pack away with a handy clip and the dough can be stored neatly inside.

ver the past 15 years, The Noble Collection, under licence from Warner Brothers, has become established as the premiere brand for quality licensed merchandise. Its flagship range of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts collectibles and prop replicas has gone from strength to strength alongside licences for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, DC and HBO’s Game of Thrones. Noble’s core lines have proved to be as popular now as they were when they company first launched them, demonstrating the perennial popularity of the licences. The success of the Harry Potter, Hermione Grainger and Albus Dumbledore wands shows no sign of waning, and this trend is reflected across the entire range of product in the Wizarding World franchise, encompassing both the Harry Potter movies and the current Fantastic Beasts cinema releases.

The company is also adding to its wand selection, with more characters’ wands being made available based on both the new films and old. Going forward into 2019, The Noble Collection will be expanding its range of products for the mass market, with price points of £9.00 for keychains and wand pens up to £25.00 for the most popular wands. The company is also capitalising on its knowledge of the retail market with of a range of CDUs designed to capture the interest of the everyday shopper; the first two are the innovative Mystery Wand Collection and Mystery Box Magical Creatures. The company has undertaken a major review of its product portfolio for 2019, and the end result is a combination of innovation supported by proven performers Three new character concepts feature Animal Pirates, Animal Fairies and Dinosaurs. All three collections are bright and colourful and include a collaboration of core products such as Skittles, Puzzles, Push-Alongs and Pull-Alongs, amongst others. Animal Pirates are a group of five colourful, fun characters that will have huge appeal for young children, and include a Pig, a Parrot and a Llama. An easy to grasp game that plays like go-fish charades, players are invited to make impressions and act out characters to win cards from their opponents. They may have to walk like a model, bark like a dog, squawk like a parrot or bleat like a sheep to win a set of three of the same cards, known as a Quirk. Opponents can steal cards by distracting, blocking and acting their way to a strategic victory. The player with the most Quirks at the end is the winner. Each game contains 56 cards consisting of 39 character cards, seven tactic cards, seven skip cards and three Quirk Off! defence cards. The game is for 2 to 6 players and takes between 15 and 30 minutes to complete. The second game in the series is Quirk! Legends which features characters from unicorns and dragons to superheroes and evil villains.
