A
s ever, Spring Fair 2017 will showcase a selection of children’s gifts, toys and gadgets in Hall 5 of The National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. Returning visitors will know that on offer there is a comprehensive selection of products throughout the children’s toy and gift market. A varied offering of items, including plush, games, gadgets, wooden toys, novelties, tech toys, art and craft, and many more will be attracting the eye of retailers and buyers throughout the four day show. Over the next few pages, a selection of exhibitors showcase their products that will be on display at the show, to give a few ideas about who and what to go and see over the five day show. There are over 200 suppliers exhibiting in the toys, gifts and gadgets hall. With over 50 suppliers showing for the first time at Spring Fair 2017, both independent retailers and buyers from multiples can benefit from the newest and hottest products on the market and have the opportunity to pick up something completely new.
toyworld The business magazine with a passion for toys
The organisers received incredibly positive feedback post-show about the toy section, so for 2017 if it isn’t broke, why fi x it? Feedback shows that a lot of cross-buying retailers liked the fact that the toy sector is located directly next to the gift sector, which offered them an easy opportunity to shop across both. Spring Fair portfolio director, Nick Davison, told Toy World: “Our focus is on ensuring that the right companies exhibit at the show so that everything that our visitors will want to see is there”. He mentions that while Hall 5 will remain the same as last year, there will be a “raft of new features elsewhere at Spring Fair 2017”. The Toy World team will once again be attending the event, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible throughout the duration of the show. In preparation for the show, please enjoy the following in-depth preview, and for more information or to register to attend, you can visit www.springfair.com

Spring Fair 2017
Spring it on Nick Davison, portfolio director for Spring Fair tells Jonika Kinchin about the challenges of preparing a show on such a large scale, and what can be expected from the aisles of Hall 5. How many stands will there be in 2017 in the toys, gifts and gadgets hall in comparison to 2016 and previous years? We have more than 200 suppliers, of which around 50 are brand new to Spring Fair for 2017.
How are preparations going for the 2017 show? Preparations are going really well. We have already matched the number of exhibitors that attended in 2016, despite still being two months away from the show at the time of writing this, and we have more space available. We have expanded the section this year due to demand and have just a few stands remaining, so it will be very exciting when we open in February. A large majority of last year’s exhibitors have rebooked, with most wanting more space – it demonstrates the faith the industry has in Spring Fair.
What are the key buying opportunities at the show? Independent stores and buyers from the multiples will benefit from exposure to the newest products on the market as exhibitors reveal their latest range additions at show. Companies tend to keep their innovations closely guarded until January, meaning that much of what visitors find at Spring Fair will be brand new. The growth areas in this section are children’s gifts and baby and nursery-focused companies. As gift retailers continue to diversify the ranges they carry, we are seeing a growing trend of baby and nursery products being increasingly stocked in general gift stores as well as garden centres and multiples. Licensed products are also growing in popularity and, based on high profile movie releases, we expect Trolls, Cars 3, Despicable Me and Star Wars to be represented at Spring Fair 2017. There will be some fantastic new brands at Spring Fair 2017, with one – Hansa Creation Inc – that has no plans to exhibit anywhere else in the UK. It produces soft toys from small to life size. Another company new to the show in 2017 is Bertoy, which produces toys, backpacks and notebooks under brands including Crocodile Creek, Mud Puppy and Angel Bliss. I think
visitors to Spring Fair will love the products it offers. Interplay is another exciting company, new to the show this year. Established for over 20 years ago, it offers toys and gifts at the quality end of the market. Its brands include My Fairy Garden, My Living World and CraftBox.
Will there be any updated features of the 2017 show? The Toy section itself remains as it was in 2016 as feedback we received post-show was incredibly positive. Visitors particularly liked that it was located directly next to the gift sector, which offered buyers an easy opportunity to shop across both. However, we will have a raft of new features elsewhere Spring Fair for 2017. Our focus is on ensuring that the right companies exhibit at the show so that everything that visitors will want to see is there. We have a diverse mix of the biggest brands within each sector, as well as smaller brands that people may not be aware of, but which add something extra to the show.
What is it that keeps exhibitors coming back to the show? Spring Fair is the largest show for the retail market in the UK and is the only event where exhibitors have access to 60,000+ quality buyers, of whom 93% have buying power. It is the most important gift-related toy show in the UK and gives businesses the chance to meet with existing customers and reinforce those relationships, as well as meet and network with other potential new buyers.
What are the main challenges in preparing for and putting on Spring Fair? The market changes quickly and we have to adapt accordingly to remain relevant for suppliers and buyers. This year we haven’t had to make many changes, but last year the toy section moved into the hall next to general Gift, so we worked on an entirely new floor plan and re-edited the set up completely. People are also changing their buying habits and so it is a case of keeping up with the latest trends and ensuring that Spring Fair is as indispensable to all buyers as it can be.

Fair comment Jonika Kinchin speaks to a number of this year’s Spring Fair exhibitors to find out what makes Spring Fair so special, and what they have up their sleeve for the show. We asked the exhibitors the following questions: What makes you keep coming back to Spring Fair? What are the main strengths of the show? What was the biggest success for you in 2016? Will you be putting on any promotions or deals throughout the show? What are your aims for 2017?
Vicki MarlerHausen Bladez
It’s important to keep a high profile at this time of the year so always being on the exhibitor list at Spring Fair keeps us in the forefront of minds. It’s also good to meet customers in Birmingham who can’t make it to London Toy Fair. You never know who might walk onto your stand at Spring Fair and become your next valuable customer, so the show is excellent for generating new leads. We also have the luxury of more time to speak to people than at other shows as it’s less rushed and frantic. We’ve been delighted at how successful our venture into the pre-school sector has been. We introduced our radio control inflatables to a younger generation with the addition of Teletubbies, Peppa Pig and Thomas & Friends, and the response from customers and parents has been fantastic. We also TV advertised Teletubbies at the end of last year, and saw our inflatable playmat sell out almost instantly, so we want to do more marketing to support our retailers. The Bladez portfolio of brands is growing, and we have some very exciting developments in the world of RC coming later this year. We therefore want to welcome more customers, secure even stronger listings and enhance our display areas in-store. Now we have a dedicated marketing function, we are also looking at ways we can raise awareness of our toys to consumers, so it should be a very busy year ahead. There will be incentives to place orders at the show, so we urge you to book an appointment to learn more about the discounts on offer.
Robert Ling Pyramid Posters
Spring Fair is a huge show, and it is great to get to meet customers face to face. It gives us a chance to talk to them about current trends, and what to keep an eye out for from Pyramid. Emails and phone calls are great, but nothing beats a face to face meeting. For us also, our business is very visual, so it’s great to be able to show off our ranges in all their glory. 2016 was a great year for Pyramid International; our ranges for Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Despicable Me and Disney continue to sell well, as has our range for Harry Potter and the Wizarding World, which saw a further boost thanks to Fantastic Beasts and where to Find them. For 2017, we are going to build on this success and take it to the next level. We are looking ahead with exciting licences including Lego Batman, Power Rangers, My Little Pony and DC Superhero Girls leading the way. We are putting a focus on innovative products across our entire library of products, and a real focus on putting the customer at the heart of our business. As for special promotions, you’ll have to visit us and see.
Harrison Palmer Pretend 2 Bee
Spring Fair is always a staple of our show calendar. Its the ideal place to exhibit our full ranges so that we can show customers first-hand the breadth and the quality of our costumes. The location of Spring Fair is just a brilliantly central point for meeting our existing clients and speaking to new customers. The customer base is also extremely diverse which is great as we often discover brand new retail channels for our various brands. Our licensed ranges have done particularly well in 2016. The success of the Thunderbirds are Go TV programming has been fantastic and the popularity of our Thunderbirds range has been a reflection of this success. Our Natural History Museum range has also exceeded expectations but what child doesn’t love dinosaurs? We always arrive at Spring Fair with lots of exciting offers and deals for our customers both old and new. Come along and see what we have to offer. We have grown significantly in 2016 and we hope that the coming year will be even more successful as we look to increase our licensed portfolio.

2017 marks our return to Spring Fair, we know that this is where Independent retailers from across the country come to assess what is on offer for the coming year. Retailers from all channels will be looking for brands to suit their customers. Interplay have gifts for children of many ages which are suitable for Art & Craft, Science, Nature and Outdoor play. The biggest success for Interplay in 2016 has been the My Fairy Garden with Lilypad Garden. They have seen demand exceed all forecasts, and Fab Lab with Glitter Tattoos and Nail Art are increasing year on year following TV advertising campaigns. The main aim for next year will be to expand the retail base wanting to sell our brands, and to increase the distribution of My Fairy Garden, Fab Lab and Fuzzikins. We are always open to discussing and offering deals to promote our brands.
Sabrina Pensom Orange Tree Toys
Spring Fair has always been one of our busiest shows, as it’s the one everyone goes to to see our new products. We see the show as a great opportunity to showcase our products and meet our existing and potential new customers. Being our biggest show of the year, Spring Fair is extremely beneficial for the year ahead. We hope to get feedback and orders for our new lines, as well as drawing in new business, and it’s also a perfect time to meet with our customers face to face. 2016 has been a very exciting year for us at Orange Tree Toys, having received numerous awards for a selection of our toy box favourites, including our Crocodile Alphabet Puzzle, Animal Puzzle Train and Safari Play Set. We are hoping 2017 will be a very successful year with the launch of a number of new and exciting toys. There will be additions to the much loved Peter Rabbit collection, including puzzles and musical instruments. We are also launching a new Puppy Love range. A new licence is also on the cards, which we’re all really excited about.
Greg Cowie Keycraft
Phil Nelson Little Concepts
Spring Fair gives us the opportunity to present our brands to a wide range of customers. As a new and growing business we really value as many contact points as possible leading us to exhibit at many trade shows. The sheer scale of the show means that visitors from many different retail backgrounds attend the show allowing us to present our products to many new potential customers. Launching Little Concepts at the start of 2016 and growing it throughout the year has been great fun. We have had to adapt quickly to a rapidly changing marketplace and had some amazing response to the brands we carry. We are working on our show deals as we speak, as usual we will have our brand starter packs, which include Free POS displays for retailers taking a new brand, plus we are working on something special which we will announce on our social media channels early in the New Year. We want to continue growing Little Concepts and find many new retailers around the UK & Eire.
Spring Fair is an awesome event for Keycraft, and it never fails to inspire us with opportunities for the rest of the year. With the huge volume and variety of retailers visiting from many parts of the world, it is a great chance to send your brand message across the globe. Every year we have more new customers partnering with us. It’s a great place to launch new brands, of which we have several in the pipeline for 2017, and it’s often the only time our customers get to see all our products and ranges set out as they should be in their totality. For the retailer, there is nothing so helpful to their decision-making than seeing how it could look in their store. We find the main strength of the show is the sheer volume and variety of retailers that visit each year, all under one very large roof. Retailers are looking for ways to diversify in these more challenging times, and it’s our chance to demonstrate to them the power of last minute impulse sales and how this can help increase their profitability. 2016 was an interesting year on most fronts, especially with the Brexit result in June and the uncertainty and insecurity that came as a result. We strove to maintain a positive outlook throughout the company in the wake of this event, and communicating that positivity to our customers was probably the biggest success for us last year. We certainly will be offering some deals at the show this year; we are always offering extensive support that is tailored to our customers’ specific needs. This year has great potential for us to continue our growth in the impulse buy toy market. We are bringing three exciting new brands to market this year which are a musthave for every retailer.

Keycraft, now in its 42nd year of trading, is an importer and wholesaler of children’s impulse buy and pocket money toys and gifts. Living Nature is popular amongst retailers, large and small, across the globe. All animals come with a hang tag detailing facts specific to that animal and its habitat, combining fun and education. Keycraft purchased the entire share capital of Wizard Limited and the brand Shrinkles last September. Keycraft has now moved production facilities to its head office to ensure that this product is still entirely made in the UK. The developed brand will be accompanied by new retail packaging and a FSDU, complete with a video screen. Gogopo is a new brand of stationery products for children, developed by Keycraft. Brightly coloured, eyecatching and highly collectible, this brand will be sold as a package in a 42 pocket FSDU. Magnoidz is a new brand of science related toys, launching in January/February 2017 with seven new science experiment kits. This brand will see more developments and additions throughout the year.
