Life on the Rivers • Many Vikings found that life on the Volga and other rivers in Russia was easier. • They had a constant supply of water and the land was easy to farm. They could also trade with anyone who passed by.
Novgorod and Kiev • Vikings attacked major cities in order to create their own country called ‘Rus’. • The ‘Kievan Rus’ were ruled by the Rurik dynasty, who crushed those who opposed them. • Most famous of all was Oleg, who founded the country and even dared to attack Constantinople (the Byzantine capital!
The Rus-Byzantine Wars • The Byzantines where the last remaining Romans in the East. • The Rus and Byzantines had many wars which often ended in good trading truces for the Vikings. • After the wars, the Rus actually turned Christian like their new Byzantine friends!
Viking Raids on the Arabs • Vikings who heard of the wealth in the East travelled in great numbers to conduct raids. • In 913, 500 ships attacked the city of Gorgon in Persia (Iran), taking slaves and goods. • On their return, the Viking raiders were attacked and defeated by Persians along the Volga river, and survivors were taken as slaves.
Arab coins in Russia and Scandinavia
• There have been hoards of Arab coins found in Russia and Scandinavia by archaeologists. • This suggests that the Volga Vikings must have traded regularly with the Arabs and sent good home to their relatives.
