What was Henry VIII’s Legacy?

LO: To examine the impact of the Reformation on religious and political change.


By the end of this topic you must know:  The state of religion at the end of Henry’s reign and the situation inherited by his son Edward. The monarchs and chronological sequence and dates of the Tudor family. The differences between Catholic and Protestant churches and belief. Details of and religious beliefs of Henry VIII, Cranmer, Luther, Calvin.

How do the different churches relate to their beliefs?


The Reformation – Luther, Henry VIII and the Pope • England had been Catholic for over 1000 years. • In the early 1500s people began to say the Catholic church was too rich. • Money was spent on fine clothes/palaces, not on the poor. The Bible was in Latin. Priests were corrupt. • People could pay to have sins forgiven. • In 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to church door in Germany starting the Protestant Reformation. • Henry VIII wrote a book defending Catholic faith. • But in 1536 Henry VIII did a U-turn and replaced the Pope as Head of the Church in England.

Conclusion As an extended essay answer the following: ď śDescribe the main changes that had occurred in religion in England by the end of Henry 8th’s reign. In what ways did those changes threaten the peace of the country?
