9thJune,2023GermanClubMuster,43registered, alwaysagoodeveningandmealattheGermanClub.

16thJune2023.GregTymmsandIattendedthe GrandopeningnightofthenewBrisbaneMotor MuseumatNudgee,

4thJune2023.Motorfest,29registered,particular mentionfromthepublicandregistrantsthatthey enjoyedthenewlayoutthisyear.Merchandisehada gooddisplayandwaswellattended.Wealsosigned upafewnewmembersontheday.

24thJuly2023.HappyLapsandBreakfast.Over60 registrants,greatmorningandwasverywellattended followedbytheCharityDayRegularitywherewehad 46registered. Wehadaslightlydifferentformatthisyearwhere driverswereplacedin“timeclasses”ratherthan “groupclasses”.Greatday,especiallyifyoudidn't driveatoyota.GRYaris, Withourwellattendeddayandrafflewemanagedto raise$15000forourQueenslandCharities. Verywelldoneforallthatparticipated,boughtraffle tickets,orsuppliedprizesandservicesforourcause. However,inreviewingthenominatedCharityfor donation,itwasfoundthatlastyear'scharityEmerge Cafe,closeditsCafeTrainingfacilityinMarch2023. Anewcharitywasputforwardforconsideration.More tocomeonthisinthenextnewsletter.

Membershiphasgrownto446activemembersand 122BundleMembers.

Theyearahead:Wehavesomeexcitingeventsplanned,withsome totallyneweventsonthehorizon.

Neweventswillinclude:-Anewcharityfundraising event,intheformofaTriviaNight,Aprogressive ModelRunandafewpop-upeventswhichwillbeput onthewebsiteasplanningprogresses.

TheyearkickedoffonceagainwithourAustraliaDay familyfundayheldattheVolunteerMarineRescue BrisbaneatShorncliffe.Wehadfantasticweatheron thedaytoshowcaseourcarsontheshoresof beautifulMoretonBay.Aspitroastlunchwasprovided aswellasentertainmentbyJohnMcInness.Wealso payedgamessuchasthongtossingandeggand spoonracing.Allwhoattendedenjoyedtheday.

Atthenendofthe ofthedaywepresentedtheVMRB withachequefor$1000tohelpwiththeirfundraising efforts.TheVMRBisanon-profitvolunteer organisationwhoseprimarypurposeistoprovide marinesearchandrescueservicestotheboating publicinMoretonBayandthesurroundingwaterways. OnFebuary18th theclubheldaruntotheBowdens OwnheadquatersontheSunshineCoast.Dan Bowdengaveaninterestingandindepthpresentation anddemonstartionoftheBowdensOwnproducts. InearlyMarchtheclubheldit’sfirstlunchrunofthe yeartotheLinvilleHotel.Thankfullythepredicted wetweatherheldoffandtherunwasmostlydry. ThedrivekickedofffromOldPetrieTownheaded outthruWoodfordforacomfortstopandthenonto theLinvilleHotel.Itwaspleasingtoseemanynew membersattendtheevent.ThankstoJohnTaitfor organisingtherun.

2023BMWClubsAustraliaNationals

TheBMWClubsAustraliaNationalswereheldontheGoldrecentlyfromthe17th to21st ofMarch organisedbyBMWClubGoldCoastinconjunctionwithBMWClubQueensland.ClubGoldCoast organisedthesocialanddriveeventswhileclubQueenslandorganisedthemotorsporteventsheldat LakesideandMorganPark.Theeventwasagreatsuccesswithover100membersmemberstraveling fromNSW,VictoriaandtheACTaswellQueensland.OnFridaythesocialeventskickedoffthewitha meetandgreetforattendeesfollowedbyacocktailpartyatTwinTowns.Saturdaymorningwasveryhot fortheShowandShineheldatQueenElizabethParkbesidethebeautifulCoolangattabeach.Alarge varietyofmodelsturnedoutforthedaytobedisplayedandjudged.

OnSaturdaynighttherewasadinneratCurrumbinSurfClubwithfantasticfoodandstunningscenery. OnSundaymorningtherewasadrivetoOceanShoresoversomegreatdrivingroadswithspectacular scenerywithastopatTweedValleyFarmhouseforlunch.Sundaynightwasthepresentationdinnerheld intheHorizonRoomatTwinTownswherethetrophiesandprizeswerepresentedfromSaturdaysshow andshine(individualwinnerspresentedintheimagesbelow)

ThemotorsporteventsorganisedbyBMWclubQueenslandatLakesideonFriday17th Marchandat MorganParkonTuesday21st Marchwerewellattendedandenjoyedbyall.

OnSundaythe21stofMaywegatheredbrightandearlyatthePumaCitiswitchforouryearlydriveto theDavidHackClassiccarandvintageaircraftdisplaywhichisheldattheoldToowoombaairport.The eventishostedbythecombinedrotaryclubsofToowoombawithproceedsbeingdonatedtothe LeukemiaFoundation,BlueCareandothercharities.TheeventisnamedinhonorofDavidHackwho hadapassionforcarsandphotographybutwho’slifewascuttragicallyshortatjust28byleukemia.As perpreviousyearstherewasalargevarietyandnumberofcarsondisplayaswellasmanyvintage aircraft.AllwhoattendedonthedayenjoyedthemselvesPhotos HERE

OnMay27th weheldasocialeventattheYatala DriveInwhereclubmemberscametoviewthe newlyreleasedFastX,thenextchapterintheFast andFuriousseries.Althoughtheweatherwascolda goodnightwashadbyallcatchingupandenjoying themovie.

RACQMotorfest-June18th

OnceagaintheclubwasinvitedtoattendRACQMotorfestattheBrisbaneExhibitionGroundsonthe18th ofJune.Theannualeventasusualwaspopularwithmemberswith29carsondisplaytothethousandsof peoplewhocamealongtotheevent.Weatherfortheeventwasperfectwithalargeturnoutofprestige, vintageandcollectorcarsaswellasdisplaysofthelatestinvehicleandtransporttechnology.Itwasan early7:00amstarttothedayattheassemblypointwherewethentraveledtotheexhibitiongroundin convoytosetupinourdedicatedundercoverarea.Allthosewhoattendedenjoyedtheday.Thanksto thoseclubmemberswhoorganisedandhelprunthedayaswellasthosewhodisplayedtheircars.More photos HERE

CharityDay&BreakfastHappyLaps-June24th

OurannualCharityDayandHappyLapsBreakfastEventwasheldonSaturday24thJuneatLakeside onceagain.Themorningstartedoutchillybutasthesuncameoutmore,itturnedintoaverycomfortable day.

CharityDayBreakfastHappyLaps.

ThiswasverywellsupportedbyClubMembersfrombothBMWClubQueenslandandtheICC.Many stayedonthentopartakeintheRegularityChallengealso.

Thebreakfasthad60peopleregisteredandeveryonehadagreattimedoingthehappylapsafteranother goodfeedofbacon,sausages,hashbrownsandeggspluscoffeeetc.cateredbyLakeside.Itwasagood starttothedaytowarmeveryoneupandthenenjoyadrivearoundthetrack.Thosewhowerenotdoing theRegularitywereabletodrivethetrackandgetafeelofwhatitislikeespeciallyintheirownvehicles. Itisalwaysalovelysight,seeingthecarsgoroundandallniceandshiny.Anothersuccessfultimeheld byall.

CharityDayInter-ClubRegularityChallenge

AftertheHappyLapsitwastimefortheteamstogetorganizedandreadytostarttheRegularity Challenge.Thiswasthehighestnumberofentriestodatewhichleadtoaverysuccessfulday.Theday wasreallywellorganizedandfinishedontimeandresultsforthewinnersarealwaysanticipated.Agreat dayallround.

CharityRaffle

AspartoftheDay,leadinguptotheevent,theClubputsonaraffletofundraiseandthenumberof prizesofferedbyoursupportersisalwaysgratifyingtoreceive.Thegenerosityprovidedisan acknowledgmentoftheworkbeingdonebytheClubandthebackingwereceiveisamazing.From BMWCAandthebusiness’contribution,thestandardofprizeisalwayswellworththemoneypaid. ItwasonceagainourpleasuretoannouncethattheDaywasahugesuccessandourClubalongwith everyone’sinput,wasabletoraiseatotalof$15,000thatwewillbeabletogivetothecharitiesofour choice.TheCommitteewillreviewsuitablecausesandupdateasthisprogresses.Asusual,theday doesn’tjusthappen.Therearemanyinthebackgroundmakingallthearrangementsandofcourse,doing allthejobsontheday.

Hello.MynameisBillandIwouldliketointroducemyselfandmytwomates,PaulandGary,asnew membersoftheBMWClubofQld.So,howdid3oldmisfitslikeusenduphereyoumightask.Wellit’s alongstory.

Isupposeitbeganbackinthelate1990s,whenGary,who’dbeenenjoyinggokartingsessionsat WillowbankwithhisEvansDeakinworkmates,suggestedtoPaulandIthatweshouldcomealongtoo, whichwedid,andsoseveralyearsofkartingbegan.Wethoughtthiswasjustabitoffunatthetime,but wewereinadvertentlylearningstufflikefindingthebestlinethroughcorners,hittingtheapex,andthefact thatbrakesarereallyquiteunnecessary.

Fastforwardafewyears,andafterseveralboysweekendswithanextendedgroupoffriendsattending GoldCoast600races,wethendiscoveredtheLeyburnSprints–anannualeventat…Leyburn..funnily enough,whichisjustwestofWarwick.Thesearetimedlapsaroundastreetcircuitthroughthetownship. Allsortsofmachinerygetsentered,fromthingslike1930sFordV8s,tolotsof1960s70sand80sAussie, British,American,JapaneseandEuroclassicsandrightuptofairlyrecentmodels.It’satightcircuit,best suitedtosmall,nimblecars.

SomuchmoreinterestingtowatchthanV8Supercars. Onour2ndor3rdvisit,westartedthinking..Weshoulddothis!!Andsobeganourquesttofind somethingabithistoricthatwecouldtaketothetrack.WeconsideredthingslikeDatsun1600s,Ford Escorts,andToranas,andlookedataFiat1500,anMGBandaBMW2002.Butastheplanwastodo thisonaminimalbudget,andgoodexamplesofalltheabovewerealreadyworthquitebigdollars,we decidedtoforgetaboutthe‘historic’bitandgoforsomethingabitmoremodern–and–cheap!Paul suggestedaMazdaMX5.Hehadoneforawhilebackintheday.Sothesearchbegan,andeventually,in late2010,wesettledona1990NAMX5(redofcourse)withjustunder200000kmandafew modificationslikecoiloversandabigger1.8LVVTenginefromalatermodel.

SobeganmanyyearsoftrackdayswiththeMX5ClubatQRandLakesidewherewelearnedmoreabout therightlinethroughcorners,findingtheapex,andotherwaysoftrimmingafewtenthshereandthereoff ourlaptimes.Afewmechanicalupgradeshelpedustoachievethisaswell.(Can’tgointoexactdetails here–thatwouldbelikeColonelSandersdisclosinghissecretherbsandspices.)

Wewouldalwaysspendsometimeatthepubaftereacheventofcourse,wherewewouldconducta rigorousandindepthpostraceanalysiswhichmainlyinvolvedGaryandIpointingouttoPaulallthe thingshe'sbeendoingwrongandhowtocorrecthismistakes.Thatboyhasalottothankusfor.

In2014,afterstillnooffersofadrivewithanyofthecompetitiveFormula1teams,wewentbacktothe LeyburnSprints,butthistimeasanentrant.PaulandItookturnsdriving,andwhatanexperience!!We hadfantasticfun,andindoingso,Paulachievedthesecondfastesttimeinourclass.Thefastestwasa TriumphTR6Ithink,butitwasn’tstreetregisteredlikeourssothatdoesn’tcountinourbooks! Becausewearejointownersofthecar,weeachhaveourownresponsibilitiestoensurethesmooth runningofourlittleraceteam.

Paulis‘TheBoss’–don’tknowquitewhatheactuallydoes,butitseemstomakehimfeelgood. Garyis‘TheMechanic’–mainlybecauseheis..um..themechanic.Heisalsosometimesreferredtoas ‘TheMeticulousBastard’andalso‘TheMX5Whisperer’becauseofhisalmostmagicalabilitytofindand dealwithpotentialproblemsbeforetheyactuallyexist.

Bill(that’sme)is‘TheCelebrity’–becauseapictureofmein2013,drivingthecarinpouringrainat Lakeside,amazingthecrowdswithincrediblefeatsofbraveryandcarcontroletcetcmadeitontothe coveroftheMX5Clubmagazine!!

Overthepast12yearsoftrackdaysourlittleMazdahasbeenamazinglyreliable,consideringthe3ofus driveonmosttrackdays,withthecarrarelygettingabreak.Onebrokendiff,onefailedradiator,andone minoraltercationwiththearmcoatLakesidehavebeentheonlycausesofanearlyfinishtothedayinall thattime.

Overthepast3or4years,asMX5Cluborganisedmotorsportopportunitieshavelessened,theBMW ClubhaskindlywelcomedMX5memberstotheirevents.WehaveparticipatedinseveraloftheBMW ClubSprintdaysatLakeside,whichhavebeenverywellorganisedandthoroughlyenjoyable.Wehave alsodiscoveredMorganParkatWarwick–whatanamazingtracktodrive!Certainlyworththetripup there.Wehaveenjoyed3eventstheresofarorganisedbySDT(SafeDriverTraining)withmembersof theBMWClub,whoalwaysmakeusfeelwelcome,sowedecidedtojoin.Paul,asafullmember becauseheactuallyownsaBMW,andGaryandIasassociatemembers.

Paul’s5SeriesBeemerisgettingabitlonginthetooth,buthestilllovesit,evenifhealsosometimes drivesamuchnewerexamplefromanotherGermanbrandthathasthelettersA..M..somethingorother ..onthebootlid.

Earlierthisyear,afteraverylongwait,ImovedaKiaStingerGTTwinTurbointomygarageafterhaving drivenafew,andreadinglotsofpositivereviewsaboutthem.Ihaven’tbeendisappointed.

Andthenthere’sGary–youknow–TheMechanic.Well,hedrivessomenondescriptsilverwagonthing thatheusestotransportracewheelsfortheMazda,aswellasbitsandpiecesfortheotherpassionin hislife(apartfromtheMX5)..(oh,andapartfromhislovely,andveryunderstandingwife,Jane)-vintage motorbikes.HehasashedfullofseriouslyimpressiveEnglishandAmericanbikesfromthe1910s,20s, and30s.NoBeemersthough.

We’vebeendoingthisMX5thingforcloseto12yearswith,onaverage5or6trackdaysperyear(apart fromduringCovid).Thethreeofusarenowretired,orsemiretiredinthecaseofPaul,andhavingjust asmuchfunaswhenwestarted.Astheysay,growingoldisinevitable.Growingupisoptional.Any regrets?Onlythatweshouldhavestartedallthis10or20yearsearlier!

So,that’sus.YoumightseeusaroundataBMWtrackdaysometime,mostlikelyatLakesideorMorgan Park.We’rethe3oldbuggersperforminglightningquickdriverchangepitstopsinbetweengroup1and group2orbetweengroups2and3.

Oh,andwho’sthequickestofthethreeyoumightask?Umm..wellPaulreckonsheis,andwecan’t reallyarguewith‘TheBoss’nowcanwe.

Motorsport Report

Thefirstsixmonthsof2023havebeenquitebusyonthemotorsportfront.TheyearkickedoffwithRound 2ofourRXAutomotiveSprintSeriesheldatLakesideonthe27thJanuarythiswasfollowedbyaskid pansessionatMtCottononthe4thFebruary.Botheventswerewellattendedbymemberswiththosewho camealongenjoyingtheday.

InMarchweheldtwomajormotorsporteventsthatwereconnectedwiththe2023BMWClubNationals thatwereheldontheGoldCoast.Theseeventsgavedriversfrominterstateachangetoexperiencetwoof ourlocaltracksnamelytheiconicLakesideParkRacewayandMorganParkRacewaynearWarwick.

TheLakesideeventwasheldinconjunctionwithRound3oftheRXAutomotiveSprintSerieswithallthat attendedenjoyingtheirexperienceofthisgreattrack.Thesecondeventwasamotorsportdrivertrainingday atMorganParkheldbySafeDriverTraining.Withguidancefromtrainedinstructorsmembersachieved maximumperformancefromtheircarswithinsafelimits.Allwhoattendedhadagreatexperience.

OnFriday26thMayRound4oftheRXAutomotiveSprintSerieswasheldatQueenslandRacewayhosted bythePorscheClubofQueensland.

TheBMWClubQldmembershipremainshealthywith60newmembersjoininginthefirsthalfof2023. Thecurrentmembershipis447withanadditional123Bundlemembers.

Thecommitteeislookingatwaystomaketheclubmoreattractivetopotentialmembersincluding youngeragegroupsandresidentsinareasoutsidetheSouthEastQueenslandarea.

TherewasalsocontinuedinterestinSIVSRegistrationindicatingmorevehicles(30yo+)beingrestoredor acquired.
