As we embark on another exciting academic year, we extend our warmest wishes to all educators, parents, and students across the UAE. The new term brings with it fresh opportunities for learning, growth, and the chance to embrace new challenges. We wish everyone the very best for the year ahead, filled with academic achievement, personal development, and the joy of learning.
At Education UAE, we understand the importance of maintaining a healthy balance. While schoolwork is crucial, it is equally important for students to prioritise exercise, creativity, and to embrace the rapidly evolving world of technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way we live, learn, and work. Integrating AI into education opens incredible possibilities for students to acquire new skills, enhance their learning experiences, and prepare for the future. However, as we engage with these advancements, it remains vital that we balance screen time with physical activities, ensuring that students' well-being remains a priority.
This issue of Education UAE also celebrates remarkable achievements in the education sector. We are thrilled to share the news that top teachers in Dubai’s private education sector have been awarded the prestigious UAE Golden Visa, recognising their outstanding contributions to the field. This initiative underscores the UAE’s commitment to valuing and rewarding excellence in education.
In addition, we celebrate the announcement by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that 28th February will now mark Emirati Day for Education, a dedicated annual event to honour the vital role of education in shaping the future of the nation. This day will serve as a reminder of the importance of education in driving innovation, nurturing talent, and fostering a bright future for all.
As we look forward to the year ahead, we encourage students to remain curious, explore new horizons, and embrace the opportunities that come their way. We wish everyone, educators, parents, and students—a successful, enriching, and rewarding year.

GESS DUBAI 2024 TO SPOTLIGHT EDTECH AS GCC SCHOOLS RAMP UP INVESTMENT IN AR AND AI TECHNOLOGIES
President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has announced that the United Arab Emirates will commemorate Emirati Day for Education on 28 February each year, effective from 2025.
“You and the youth of the UAE are the true wealth of the nation. We always aspire for you to excel because we invest in quality. Today, we are investing in you, and this is the best investment for the future,” he asserted
He highlighted that this day acknowledges the crucial role education plays in the nation’s advancement and honours those who contribute to the profession.
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, remarked that the establishment of this day underscores the UAE’s commitment to “establishing education as a fundamental pillar of development and progress.” In a message shared, he noted that knowledge is essential for achieving sustainable development and “building a prosperous future for subsequent generations,” asserting that education remains the nation’s path to realising its ambitions across all sectors.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed that the initiative will contribute “to enhancing the role of education as a vital and fundamental cornerstone for comprehensive and sustainable development,” describing it as the “driving force behind progress and one of the key criteria for measuring the success and competitiveness of nations.” He emphasised that it aligns with “the vision of our founder, who prioritised education as a national imperative for shaping the future.” As Chairman of the Education, Human Development, and Community Development Council, Sheikh Abdullah remarked, “Today, we are witnessing tangible changes since the establishment of the Union in 1971, which have significantly enhanced the quality of education.”
Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed, Vice Chairperson of the Education and Human Resources Council, stated that the day “conveys a special message of gratitude for all those working in the education sector.” She underscored how education can “transform challenges into opportunities, equip the youth with necessary skills,” and empower society to build a “sustainable future that reflects our identity, enriches our culture, and upholds our values in the UAE.”
Students are the True Wealth of the Nation
During his official visit to the United States last week, Sheikh Mohamed reiterated that the youth of the UAE are its true wealth. At a reception for university students and Emirati astronauts Nora Al Matrooshi and
Mohammed Al Mulla at the UAE Embassy in Washington, Sheikh Mohamed stated that the UAE is at a juncture that requires qualified Emiratis capable of assuming responsibilities, emphasising that the country relies on them.
“You and the youth of the UAE are the true wealth of the nation. We always aspire for you to excel because we invest in quality. Today, we are investing in you, and this is the best investment for the future,” he asserted.
Sheikh Mohamed encouraged students to view themselves as ambassadors of the UAE, urging them to maintain their identity and values while seeking new skills and expertise.

Ongoing drive to promote parent-friendly work cultures to benefit parents, children, and the broader community across the UAE.
Since its launch in 2021, the programme has reached over 148,000 employees and positively impacted the lives of 67,000 working parents and 50,000 children, including 1,492 Children of Determination.
In a new testament of shifting tides towards empowering the UAE’s working parents, the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA)’s Parent-friendly Label™ (PFL) programme has attracted applications from 83 organisations in its third cycle, reflecting the increasing interest from bodies across the UAE, including some of the worldleading organisations operating in the UAE. The innovative programme allows semigovernmental, private and third-sector organisations in the UAE to apply to earn the Label, demonstrating their commitment to a supportive parent-friendly work culture and policies that positively impact children 0-8 years old and their parents.
In line with the ongoing trend of shifting to parent-friendly work cultures, the impact of the parent-friendly policies and practices across applicant organisations in the third cycle has seen an increase,
reaching a total of 163,000 employees, and benefiting parents, children, and the broader community across the UAE. Cycle 3 applications have recorded a 57% increase in the numbers of benefiting parents, along with a 25% increase in number of young children (under 8 years old), as well as 51% increase in numbers of children of dete armination benefiting from parent-supportive culture at their parents’ workplaces.
Building on the success of the second cycle, which attracted applications from different industries, the programme has broadened its outreach to new industries, receiving the highest applications from professional services organisations, followed by the education industry, with nurseries leading this industry, while energy and utilities as well as healthcare and pharma industries came in third place.
All applications will undergo a rigorous assessment based on 19 criteria across five categories, such as parental leave, flexible work, family care, family wellbeing and culture. An independent panel of expert judges from across the UAE will ensure fair, objective, and anonymous assessment of all applications. The panel will review all applications to select the best applications, where organisations will either earn the Level 1 classification (PFL) for exceeding local leading parentfriendly policies and practices or Level 2 (PFL+) for meeting or exceeding global standards.
In Cycle 2, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, honoured the label earners, including Emirates Nature-WWF and Tappy Toes Nursery with the PFL+ classification, while Bain & Co, Mubadala Investment Company, Novartis, Nestle, LinkedIn, Houbara Defence
& Security, Visa Middle East, Chalhoub Group, and Nabta Health. The label earners have set a benchmark for supportive workplaces and demonstrated impactful parent-friendly policies and practices, including bonding leave for new parents, extended maternity and paternity leaves, and flexible work arrangements for new parents, among others.
Irrespective of the application’s final result, PFL provides all applicant organisations with a comprehensive and complementary feedback report stating their strengths and areas for improvement to assist them in their journey towards becoming a parentfriendly workplace. Since its launch in 2021, the programme has reached over 148,000 employees and positively impacted the lives of 67,000 working parents and 50,000 children, including 1,492 Children of Determination.

Dubai continues to see improvements in educational quality, with 81% of students now attending private schools rated Good or higher, up from 77% last year, according to KHDA.
This year, 209 schools with over 360,000 students were inspected, including 10 new schools. Among them, 23 were rated Outstanding, 48 Very Good, 85 Good, and 51 Acceptable. Two schools were rated Weak, with none rated Very Weak. Overall, 26 schools saw rating improvements, while three saw declines.
Her Excellency Aisha Abdulla Miran, Director General of KHDA, remarked: “The continuous improvement by the schools indicates their commitment to offering high-quality educational opportunities. Our schools are among the world’s highest performing, according to international assessments, ranking sixth for literacy in PIRLS, top 10 globally for maths, and top 14 for science and reading in PISA assessments.
These results reaffirm Dubai’s status as a world-class destination for education, in line with the leadership’s vision set out in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and Dubai Social Agenda 33.”
This year, 90% of schools improved in one or more quality indicators, with 67% related to student outcomes, 26% to school provisions, and 7% to leadership.
Dubai’s schools have made notable progress in teaching Arabic as a first language, with 64% rated Good or higher, up from 52% last year. For Islamic education, 77% of schools were rated Good or higher, compared to 68% in the previous academic year.

19,782 classroom visits were carried out
4,407 hours of dialogue with students, parents, and school leaders
81% of students receive an education rated Good or higher

The DSIB team will conduct quality assurance visits focusing on specific areas to monitor progress.
Full inspection reports and individual parent summary reports for the 2023-24 academic year are now available on the KHDA website and mobile app.

The ability to adapt, recover, and thrive in the face of challenges is a skill that can significantly impact an individual's success and well-being throughout their life. Resilience is not something inherent in every individual, but it is a skill that can be taught and nurtured in young people.
Razzamataz Theatre Schools, known for their innovative approach to performing arts education, have recognised the need to promote resilience. Through their creative teaching methods, students are encouraged to try new things, stepping out of their comfort zones with the reassurance that they are supported every step of the way. This nurturing approach gives children the confidence to put themselves in new situations and learn from each experience, which builds resilience and a sense of achievement in children and young people.
The desire to continue developing resilience in young people led Razzamataz to create opportunities for students to participate in overseas residential trips, providing them with invaluable chances to learn in a holistic, realworld environment. UK students have taken part in educational enrichment trips to Paris, New York, London, and, in November this year, Dubai.
Razzamataz’s meticulously crafted educational trips not only inspire a love of the arts but also provide life-changing experiences that develop confidence and lifelong skills
“These trips give students a unique opportunity to step out of their comfort zones and immerse themselves in new cultures, promoting openmindedness and adaptability, all essential components of resilience,” says Denise Gosney, Managing Director and Founder of Razzamataz. “Participating in our trips also exposes students to incredible opportunities to meet inspiring individuals, which will impact their lives for years to come, as well as creating special memories.”
In London and New York, Razzamataz students attended masterclasses with professional performers and cast members of hit West End and Broadway shows. These experiences not only provided insight into the exciting world of theatre and the arts, but also the opportunity to learn from individuals who have excelled in their chosen field.
“Hearing first-hand stories from people who have navigated challenges and realised their dreams
as professional performers is both inspiring and provides invaluable lessons on perseverance, dedication, and passion for our students,” adds Denise. “It is through these stories of struggle that we can teach students about the power of resilience and show them that they already have all they need within themselves to succeed. Our mission as educators is to help students tap into their own resources to become well-rounded individuals who can independently tackle the challenges life may bring.”
Combining educational overseas trips with performing arts has proven to be a hugely successful formula, developed over Razzamataz’s 25-year history. Students go on to achieve success in various industries, often crediting Razzamataz with many of their life skills. Lucy from Razzamataz Mansfield, who recently participated in the New York trip, said: “I’m training to be a nurse at the moment and Razzamataz has really helped with my confidence.”
Parents and guardians also recognise the benefits of these types of trips and the impact they have on young lives, both in the life skills they develop and the memories they create. Kate Stark, a parent whose daughter returned from New York, said: “I can’t believe everything she has done, the places she’s been, and the things she’s seen in just a few days. I’m not sure how anything can possibly top this trip she’s been on, and that’s thanks to you for making it happen.”
Razzamataz has extensive experience in organising large-scale events. The team frequently stages shows in London's West End theatres and performances at Disneyland Paris. They also coordinate numerous theatre visits and educational trips both within the UK and abroad.

Razzamataz students participate in enriching overseas trips to destinations like Paris, New York, and Dubai, gaining invaluable life skills while learning in a holistic environment
Over the years, Razzamataz has honed its skills in facilitating such trips, learning the most effective ways to manage logistics, ensure participant safety, and create memorable experiences. Their expertise allows them to seamlessly coordinate travel, accommodation, and schedules, ensuring that every event runs smoothly so participants can focus on enjoying the performances and educational opportunities, while having space for personal development and growth.
In addition to performance opportunities, Razzamataz's educational trips are meticulously crafted to enhance learning and create lasting memories. The team curates a diverse range of activities, from behind-the-scenes theatre tours to workshops with industry professionals, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the performing arts. These experiences are designed to inspire and motivate, fostering a lifelong love of the arts.
“We’ve been working with young people and their families for many years, so we understand the level of detail that must go into these types of trips and experiences,” explains Denise. “We engage in thorough planning and research of the destination, including understanding cultural norms and potential language barriers. We have a dedicated health and safety manager at our Head
Office, who prioritises student safety with detailed emergency protocols and clear communication plans. To create special memories, we provide students with a well-structured itinerary that balances educational activities with leisure, so they can learn in a fun and relaxed environment. On trips like this, communication is key, so we foster collaboration among chaperones and maintain open communication with parents throughout.”
Razzamataz Theatre Schools is delighted to be attending this year’s GESS and bringing their multi-award-winning brand to Dubai. BC INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AND NURSERY
Education has been the foundation of society, shaping all generations and their futures. Today, its role has expanded to foster not only individual thinkers but also global citizens. This change is driven by the realisation that our world is more interconnected than ever before.
Truly understanding our world requires going beyond superficial knowledge. Whether it is the complexities of climate change or the nuances of diverse cultures, global education aims to offer a thorough understanding. It is about preparing students for more than just tests. It is about equipping them for the challenges and opportunities of a globalised world.
At the heart of global citizenship are four key principles: critical thinking, cultural awareness, empathy, and social responsibility. They form the core foundation, ensuring that as the world changes, our approach to education and citizenship adapts accordingly.
Global citizenship in early childhood education is often guided by a question that parents, caregivers, and educators ask: “How can we prepare our children for success in today's world?” Societies are incredibly diverse, and schools and childcare centres must adapt to this reality. Global citizenship focuses on equipping children with the skills they need to understand global interconnections. How do they do this?
Being curious – asking questions about the world and seeking knowledge.
Recognising diverse perspectives –appreciating their own viewpoint and those of others.
Engaging in respectful dialogue –communicating thoughtfully and with consideration.
Taking action – contributing to making a positive difference.
Why is this important? In our interconnected world, many challenges are global in nature. From global crises to social and economic inequalities, addressing these issues requires collective action and collaboration. By promoting global citizenship from an early age, we empower the next generation with the mindset to drive positive change.
In today's globalised and fast-paced world, early childhood education plays a vital role in preparing children for a successful future. Dibber's Scandinavian-inspired curriculum focuses on developing global citizens with strong cognitive, emotional, social, and physical skills. This holistic approach ensures that children receive a well-rounded education that provides a solid foundation for their future. Children are seen as unique individuals with the right to participate in and shape their own lives. They are encouraged to explore new interests and face appropriate challenges at every stage of their development, which promotes continuous learning and skillbuilding. This approach not only helps them master current tasks but also instills the understanding that learning is a lifelong journey and an essential aspect of life.
Children are encouraged to take on new challenges, explore, and experiment, which helps them approach new activities with curiosity and enthusiasm, even when faced with uncertainty.
Children spend a significant amount of time outdoors, where they receive rich sensory experiences and learn to interact harmoniously with their natural surroundings. Beyond the educational benefits, spending time in nature also provides substantial physical and mental health advantages. This exposure helps develop a strong appreciation for the environment, instils a sense of responsibility to contribute to the local community, and fosters a commitment to protecting our planet.
By nurturing a child’s innate curiosity and interest, education becomes a tool for acquiring knowledge, staying informed, and developing essential life skills. As future leaders, children at Dibber learn critical communication skills, how to thrive in multicultural settings, and the importance of treating others with kindness and compassion.
From emotional intelligence to empathy, the Dibber way of learning helps cultivate socially and emotionally adept children with effective communication skills and grouporiented mindset who can navigate the world beyond the classroom with intrinsic motivation, self-esteem, and grace. The importance of collaboration and collective intelligence is also emphasised as children are encouraged to work in groups, engage in peer-to-peer learning, and participate in playful tasks together.
Investing in a Global-accepted Curriculum
A significant benefit of an international nursery experience is that children are introduced to peers from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and nationalities. Dibber’s curriculum is carefully designed not only to provide a strong foundation in early childhood education but also to positively shape future generations.
Dibber International Nurseries offers many advantages for early learners by creating a supportive and enriching environment that encourages comprehensive development. This includes boosting cognitive abilities, enhancing emotional intelligence, improving physical health, fostering adaptability, increasing environmental awareness, and instilling a lifelong love of learning. The program focuses on a long-term approach to education, aiming to make learning both engaging and enjoyable beyond the early years.
A positive early childhood experience has lasting benefits, and every child deserves access to high-quality early education and care. By offering a nurturing and stimulating environment, children are better prepared to handle the complexities of the modern world, setting them up for a fulfilling and successful future where they can actively contribute to society.

In the age of TikTok virality and AI ubiquity, students are faced with unprecedented access to different technologies and communication channels. Among all these rapid shifts, how can educators support young people in developing timelessly transferable set of core skills that they will be able to draw on long into their futures. Let’s look at what resources the Emirates Literature Foundation (ELF) offers for students of all ages, abilities and interests.
Student writing competitions such as the Oxford University Press Story Writing Competition and the Voices of Future Generations Arabia Creative Writing Competition focus on nurturing the writers of tomorrow by asking them to craft short stories inspired by a theme or even the United Nations' Sustainability Development Goals.
Similarly, the Foundation's Letter Writing Competition ask students to draft letters encouraging them not just to consider
a subject in depth, but to express their thoughts and feelings about it while also showcasing excellent penmanship.
For more extroverted students who love the limelight, the Emirates NBD Poetry For All Competition gives them a chance to get up on stage and give their all as they perform a poem from the ELF-curated selection, with Arabic-speaking students being offered a choice of classical or more traditional, Nabati poetry.
In keeping with ELF's belief that stories can be shared in any medium, the Al Futtaim Digital Storytelling Competition is targeted at young Arab film buffs. Students must work in teams to script, shoot, and edit short videos centred around books.
But that's not the only competition that centres on teamwork and co-operation. Students taking part in the Chevron Readers' Cup may work together in teams of up to four members as they closely read the preselected books and then answer questions based on them. For younger students, there's the Arcadia Book in A Box Competition which allows a class of students to work together to build a book-inspired diorama using recycled materials.
Of course, it's not just about giving students the tools they need to succeed. It's also about encouraging their interests and addressing topics they care deeply about. That's the driving motivation behind the in-person Education Programme at the Emirates LitFest each year. Not only do visiting authors give talks about a variety of topics at the festival venue but schools are also invited to "bid" for a Festival author to visit their school and do their talk for a wider audience.
For students whose skills might lie in the performing arts, schools may apply for a slot on the LitFest Fringe Stage. This allows them to showcase their students' talents in front of a wide, international audience of Festival attendees, boosting the young performers' confidence.
So, while technology remains an unavoidable fact of life, ELF emphasises skills that can be adapted and amplified, leaving students more than equipped for the world of tomorrow.
EMIRATES LITERATURE FOUNDATION
It’s not every day that a simple classroom experiment can ignite a lifelong passion. However, for many students, this spark can shape their journey in unexpected ways. The education they receive isn't just about memorising facts or passing exams; it’s about exploring, questioning, and discovering how far they can stretch their potential. This journey of growth—both personal and academic—is where the magic truly happens. Imagine the resilience of a spring, stretching and rebounding, always finding its way back to shape. Education, when done right, encourages students to be like that spring. The more they are encouraged to push their boundaries, the more they discover their true potential. This journey doesn’t happen overnight, nor does it come from merely reading textbooks; it flourishes in an environment that nurtures curiosity and provides the right mix of support and challenge.
At Sunmarke School, these principles form the foundation of their teaching philosophy.
Students are empowered to explore a wide range of interests, from science experiments that make bacteria smell like pine trees to debates that hone critical thinking skills.
Just as a spring stretches to its limit, students are guided to push beyond their comfort zones. With every stretch, they learn more about themselves and develop a mindset that views challenges as opportunities, not obstacles.
Encouraging Curiosity and Growth
Curiosity is the hallmark of young learners. The desire to understand the world around them is a powerful tool that, when nurtured, leads to significant personal and academic growth. Schools like Sunmarke recognise that fostering this innate curiosity is crucial. They create environments where students feel safe to ask questions, explore new ideas, and experiment without the fear of failure.
Consider my own experience as a keen student fascinated by genetics from a young age. Encouraged by both school and family, I delved deeper, attending advanced
science programmes and participating in projects that challenged my understanding. This approach was not just about mastering content; it was about cultivating a mindset that could embrace complexity and uncertainty.
“The more one pushes oneself, the greater the growth.” This is the essence of a growthoriented educational philosophy.
However, just as a spring has its limits, students also need balance. They must learn when to push forward and when to take a step back. Balance is a core part of the educational experience. The school acknowledges the importance of mental and physical well-being alongside academic growth. Their approach creates an environment where every student feels safe to take risks and learn from failure without the fear of breaking under pressure.
Sunmarke emphasises experiential learning, where students engage in projects that require them to solve real-life problems. Whether through designing a sustainable living project, creating apps for social good, or participating in international science competitions, students are taught to think critically and creatively. In one project, students explored genetic diversity by researching how different genetic makeups could impact health outcomes. Living in a cosmopolitan society like the UAE, they can relate to the relevance of ethnic diversity in genetic databases more profoundly than many of their peers abroad. This kind of contextual learning helps students see the world beyond their classroom walls, connecting their academic pursuits with global challenges. Students learn that their work has real implications, that their voices matter, and that they have a role to play in shaping the future.
Understanding that each student is unique is another key element in this approach. Just as springs are made from different materials, students come from diverse backgrounds, each with their own strengths and challenges. An educational system that acknowledges and celebrates these differences is better equipped to help all students develop their abilities to tackle real-world problems. By fostering an inclusive environment that accommodates various learning styles and needs, schools can empower every student to discover their path to success.
Building Resilience Beyond the Classroom Resilience isn't just about bouncing back from setbacks; it's about learning how to adapt, grow, and find new ways forward. It’s transformative when students learn that setbacks are part of the learning process. They are taught that resilience involves knowing when to persevere, when to seek support, and when to re-evaluate and change direction. This balance ensures that students thrive, not just academically, but in all areas of their lives. Furthermore, resilience extends beyond individual growth; it’s about contributing to a community, supporting peers, and recognising that one's success is interconnected with others. Through group projects, leadership opportunities, and community service, students develop a sense of responsibility towards others, learning that resilience is also about uplifting each other.
This journey doesn’t happen overnight, nor does it come from merely reading textbooks; it flourishes in an environment that nurtures curiosity and provides the right mix of support and challenge.
Education is not about enduring endless hardship; it’s about knowing when to lean in and when to pause, reflect, and seek support. At Sunmarke, students are encouraged to pursue excellence while maintaining their well-being, ensuring they are ready to thrive in all areas of life. By fostering a culture that combines academic rigour with personal growth, schools like Sunmarke help prepare students to tackle real-world challenges with determination, empathy, and a sense of purpose.
The result is a generation of young people ready to make their mark on the world, equipped with the skills and mindset to turn obstacles into opportunities.
As Artificial Intelligence becomes ever more a part of our daily lives and demand for AI expertise soars in industries across the globe, it is the responsibility of educators to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to not only navigate but to innovate and lead in their respective fields.
This academic year, the pioneering IB school, Bloom World Academy became the first in the UAE to introduce a BTEC course in Artificial Intelligence within the core curriculum, making AI a mandatory subject for all students aged 14+.
The course aims to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in AI, covering topics from ethical considerations to machine learning and real-world applications in various industries. As they progress, students will become familiar with a range of AI technologies including image generation, content creation, automation and relevant AI software, alongside which the ethical implications and importance of self-discipline for responsible AI use will be a focus.
On completion of the course, students graduate with a BTEC International Level 3 Specialist Award in Artificial Intelligence, a globally recognised qualification.
Grade 9 student Inaya commented, "I’m excited because it’s in line with what I want to do in the future. I want to work in the environmental sector, and I can see how AI could revolutionise sustainable practice, by sorting recyclables in our trash, for example. That would be a really great thing for people and for the planet."
As a school which goes by the motto of ‘doing things differently’, for BWA the integration of innovative technologies is part of a wider initiative to offer a uniquely broad, customisable curriculum for its students. Hundreds of Pathway options are available at the school, ranging from classes to develop tech skills like Robotics & Coding, to practical learnings in Financial Literacy and Lifesaving, and embracing traditional approaches alongside the modern, for example Musical Theatre and Digital Music Production, or Journalism and Creative Media.
Alongside the Pathways, before and after-school (8am-9am & 4pm-5pm), Bloom Enrichment Learning Activities (BELA) are available, giving children the opportunity to study and specialise in an even richer variety of subjects, whether that be Iranian or Eco Studies, Photography or Basketball, and including an AI & Robotics BELA.
Bloom World Academy is a progressive international school for ages 18 months – 18 years, authorised to provide all the renowned International Baccalaureate programmes and based on a state-ofthe-art campus in Al Barsha South.
The school has brought several ‘firsts’ to the UAE, including a later start to the school day, which runs from 9am-4pm. To find out more about their unique offerings and admissions process,
The Pre-Prep at Brighton College Dubai offers a uniquely nurturing and supportive environment that feels like a 'home away from home', prioritising the pastoral care and happiness of its pupils and setting the stage for their academic success with an emphasis on providing a holistic learning experience for all. Due to the smaller number of form entries, the school offers a more authentic experience of a ‘true British Prep School’, where everyone knows each other, and the children can truly feel ‘at home’.
Academically, the children consistently exceed age-related expectations. Part of this success can be attributed to the fact that the children are not only taught how to read well but are taught how to enjoy reading – through daily story times, welcoming reading spaces and fun events such as author visit and World Book Day.
The school places a great focus on smooth transitions between different stages of education, which starts with the transition from nursery/home to FS1
– with the School Readiness programme, Bright Start. This programme aims to ensure that pupils joining FS1 feel secure, happy, and confident as they begin their academic year, by hosting weekly sessions for the children in the months leading up to the beginning of their first ever academic year. Alongside supporting the children, the programme offers parent workshops covering various topics, including an introduction to Brighton College and its core values, the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, communication and language skills, independence development, and toilet training assistance.
Fostering confidence, curiosity, and kindness in pupils is at the heart of everything the school does. These values are actively promoted and integrated in the daily activities and curriculum. Instilling these values ensures that the pupils’ academic success becomes a consequence, rather than a goal, and doesn’t create any unnecessary pressure. As such, the pupils thrive academically and are given the opportunity to be autonomous in their learning. No ceiling
is set for a pupil, and all are challenged to reach their full potential. The school understands the importance of cultivating learning skills in children, and it accomplishes this through a unique approach that links animals to thinking skills. This enables children to engage with metacognition in a developmentally age-appropriate manner, fostering a deep understanding of the learning process that will facilitate their further academic success.
We invite children and families to visit our Pre-Prep and experience our amazing environment and values in person.
At Brighton College Dubai, the Pre-Prep feels like a ‘home away from home,’ prioritising pastoral care and happiness to set the stage for academic success
Nurturing Future Leaders at Brighton College Abu Dhabi Pre-Prep.
In the heart of Brighton College Abu Dhabi Pre-Prep, its vibrant community thrives under the dedicated leadership of Ms Kelly Mansbridge, the Head of PrePrep. With a passion for nurturing young minds and a commitment to fostering a supportive environment, Ms Mansbridge has been instrumental in implementing innovative programmes such as the 'Bright Start'.
In this article, Head of Pre-Prep at Brighton College Abu Dhabi shares insights into how Brighton College preps its pupils for a lifelong journey of learning, exploring, and discovering their unique potential.
Brighton College Abu Dhabi Pre-Prep is a truly special place, distinguished by its vibrant sense of community and nurturing environment that welcomes children and their families even before they officially join our school. Our 'Bright Start' programme exemplifies this ethos, offering an invaluable opportunity for new joiners and their families to familiarise themselves with our setting, teachers, fellow parents, and gain insight into our expectations and values.
We offer a six-week programme for families within the country, providing opportunities for children to play and parents to ask questions in a relaxed environment. For families unable to attend in person, we encourage children to join online class story sessions or Circle Time. To help them become familiar with the school setting, we share a Social Story with every child, which includes pictorial and written information about their teacher, the class they are joining, and the school's expectations and routines. This early engagement fosters a strong sense of belonging and eases the transition into school life for both anxious parents and their children.
We have embedded a strong sense of social responsibility, self-regulation, and self-discipline through our PELICAN Values (Perseverance, Enthusiasm, Leadership, Independence, Confidence, Achievement, and Nurture). Children confidently discuss the meaning of these values, demonstrate these behaviours through their social interactions and attitudes towards learning, and recognise their peers for doing the same.
These values create the conditions for learning, encourage children to take risks in their learning, and develop a sense of self-awareness.
Through our innovative curriculum, we encourage children to be active learners by taking risks, exploring, and asking questions. Children are motivated to challenge themselves through warm, engaging interactions with their teachers, sensitive teaching, and a nurturing environment. They are actively taught learning skills to prepare them for the future in a rapidly developing world.
We promote a learning environment where pupils see the value of mistakes as learning opportunities, fostering resilience, confidence, and readiness for the next stage of their educational journey. Equipped with this mindset, pupils take on interesting challenges that connect with their passions and equip them with a competitive advantage to continue their education.
Join us for an Open Morning or a personalised tour to experience how curiosity, confidence and kindness intertwine to create extradorinary journeys.
To instil this mindset in every pupil, we offer numerous opportunities for them to develop leadership skills and our projectbased challenges in the classroom provide an opportunity for our children to build this way of thinking while practising entrepreneurial skills in the areas of business, design, and technology.
Happy, secure children become confident discoverers, explorers, and creators while developing a strong sense of belonging to the school, their community, and the wider world. We aim to ensure that each experience truly engages the children and embraces their unique, individual interests.
The ideal way to discover life at Brighton College Abu Dhabi is to attend one of our upcoming Open Mornings or schedule a personalised tour. This will give you the opportunity to meet our pupils and teachers and see what makes our school truly special.

Gemma Thornley Leads Arbor School with a Vision for Sustainable Education.
The Arbor School is an exciting, dynamic, and forward-thinking school that prepares young people for a rapidly changing world, nurturing a core belief in environmental mindfulness, responsibility, and the importance of sustainability.
At the Arbor School Dubai, our curriculum is not just about academic rigour; it is a transformative journey that prepares students for an ever-evolving world. What excites me most about leading Arbor into this next chapter is the synergy we create between academic excellence and our unique focus on sustainability and ecoliteracy.
As Principal, I am committed to ensuring our students excel academically while nurturing their ability to think critically about the environmental and social challenges facing our planet. I am proud to say that we offer more than just the National Curriculum for England. We embed sustainability and environmental mindfulness at the heart of everything we do. It takes a team of passionate educators who believe in our mission, combined with specialists, who we employ full time to align our unique pedagogical approach. Through our ecoliteracy framework, students gain the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become responsible global citizens who understand the complex interdependencies between human activity and the natural world.
Designing a curriculum that empowers students to apply their learning in real-world contexts through hands-on projects, outdoor learning experiences in our biodomes, and interdisciplinary studies has been a labour of love. An Arbor student is encouraged to
"Choosing The Arbor School for my son was the best decision we made. The way the school incorporates sustainability into every lesson has changed the way he thinks about the world around him. He comes home talking about biodiversity and conservation, and I love seeing him so excited about learning while also caring for the environment."

question, innovate, and find solutions to pressing global challenges. We know that this approach fosters not only intellectual curiosity but also a deep sense of purpose.
I am thrilled to be the one to take Arbor to the next level by further integrating sustainability with academic achievement. My vision for Arbor is clear: to see students leading the way in academic success while embodying the values of ecological responsibility and global citizenship. This can be achieved by aligning academic rigour with our unique sustainability mission. We have a moral duty to prepare young people to excel in their chosen fields and ensure they can contribute meaningfully to creating a more sustainable future.
This holistic approach to education sets Arbor apart, and I look forward to building on this foundation to take our students to new heights of achievement and impact.
"What impresses me most is how Arbor goes beyond academics. The outdoor learning and hands-on projects have given my daughter a much deeper understanding of real-world challenges. The school’s focus on critical thinking and environmental responsibility is exactly what today’s generation needs. It’s an inspiring place for children to grow academically and personally."

Emirati brothers and Canadian University Dubai (CUD) graduates, Ali Sharif Al Marzooqi and Omar Sharif Al Marzooqi, both started their careers as junior executives in human resources. With a passion for the industry and growing professional expertise, they also recognised the importance of earning a formal qualification in the field. Taking different routes to join the same degree programme, Ali and Omar returned to education as mature students, enrolling in CUD’s Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource Management in the same year. As mid-career graduates, they are now at the top of their profession in strategic roles with leading UAE organisations.
Having spent his summers since the age of 16 in training with Dubai Ports Authority in Jebel Ali, it was a natural progression for Omar to join the organisation after high school. Two decades on, Omar has applied his education and professional experience to rise through the ranks to Senior Vice President of People at DP World, overseeing the workforce of the Middle East, North Africa & Sub-Continent Region. Ali, meanwhile, started out with Dubai real estate developer Nakheel. After transitioning through senior roles with other developer groups, Ali is now Head of Performance and Compensation at Emirates Investment Authority.
"Climbing the HR ranks to Senior VP at DP World"
Ali Sharif Al Marzooqi’s return to education at 27 transformed him from a hesitant student to a committed learner, leading to professional success
Working full-time and caring for their young children while also studying at CUD, Ali and Omar knew there would be challenges and sacrifices throughout their journey, yet both had a strong motivation to succeed. Ali explained, “I had never been a natural scholar, so it was an immense effort to return to education at 27 years old. Despite being in a management position, I recognised that there was a gap in my academic experience that I needed to fill to help me progress further in my career. While it was a challenge to adapt in the first few months, my studies ultimately added value for me, both personally and professionally.”
Transformed from a reluctant scholar to a committed lifelong learner, Ali returned to CUD in 2016 to study for a Master’s in Business Administration. Stepping outside his comfort zone, he enrolled in the Finance specialisation, with the aim of growing his career further. Ali said, “I wanted to learn a different approach to business that would challenge my traditional HR mindset. Alongside my role as a Group Vice President, I held a number of positions on advisory boards and steering committees, and the MBA in Finance helped me understand different perspectives and more systematic approaches to change.”
Like Ali, Omar also enrolled in an undergraduate degree to learn the academic theories and industry standards that would complement his extensive workplace practice. He said, “In my job, I have overseen multiple projects and experienced all suites of HR practice, from recruitment and employee relations to performance management and learning and development. My journey at CUD was an important addition to this experience, because I had the opportunity to network with like-minded professionals and learn from top-tier professors, as well as fellow students.”
Omar also went on to step out of his professional comfort zone. After 15 years climbing the ranks in human resource management, he decided to explore the operations side of the Dubai ports business. Omar explained, “I realised that, to understand the needs of employees, I had to see the challenges they faced first-hand, and this motivated my move into operations. I was assigned to manage the Cruise Business and Operations at Mina Rashid, where I was able to take on several groundbreaking projects, like transferring the worldrenowned Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) to Port Rashid and supporting the Dubai Cruise Committee to attract one million passengers in three years.”
Outside of their professional achievements, Ali and Omar are keen tennis and padel players, both having represented their country internationally. Though their work, family, and study commitments meant that there was less time to pursue their sporting passion while at university, the brothers have remained in the game. Now Team Manager for the UAE National Padel Team, Omar concluded, “There will always be sacrifices when you go to university after establishing a career, but the education and knowledge you gain will always be worth those sacrifices.”
In conclusion, Omar offered the following advice to current students and fresh graduates: “I encourage you to embrace a strong work ethic, maintain a positive outlook, and set ambitious goals. Be patient, persistent, and passionate about your aspirations. Don’t hesitate to challenge conventional thinking and drive positive change within your industry. The world needs your unique perspective and contributions.”

Pearson
Education UAE spoke to Giovanni Giovannelli, President, Pearson English Language Learning to get a deeper understanding about education today and in the future.
Giovanni Giovannelli is the President of Pearson English Language Learning, with a PhD in Economics and a Harvard Business School qualification. His diverse career across countries and industries, including time spent as a migrant in the U.S. and Brazil, has made language learning both a personal and professional focus. Giovanni views language as essential for connecting people and driving success in education and business. He champions continuous learning and reverse mentoring, fostering innovation by learning from younger colleagues, which helps navigate the evolving educational landscape.
Education UAE: What do you believe are the key trends in English language learning and education today, and how is Pearson adapting to these changes?
Giovanni Giovannelli: Pearson is focused on two major trends that will drive growth: demographic shifts and the rise of AI. These trends reinforce the importance of learning, skills, and verified competencies. Pearson’s mission is to help individuals learn and progress in life, especially in English learning, as over a billion people are currently learning English worldwide.
In the MENA region, e-learning and bilingual education, particularly in STEM subjects, are significant trends. Pearson aligns with this by offering courseware, proficiency assessments, and certification through partnerships with over 40 institutions in the UAE. Our digital solutions, like the Pearson Test of English (PTE), are also growing rapidly, reflecting the demand for English proficiency as a gateway to international opportunities.
Education UAE: How do you think AI can further optimise productivity in education for students and teachers?
A strong emphasis on English proficiency as a key tool for success in employment and international opportunities.
Giovanni Giovannelli: AI, especially Generative AI, has enormous potential to enhance education. Pearson is already leveraging this with Teaching Pal, an AIpowered tool that generates customised lesson content, reducing the time educators spend on preparation. AI will work alongside teachers, not replace them, to provide realtime assistance in the classroom.
We’re also using AI in our Pearson Test of English (PTE) to ensure objective and accurate scoring. AI is being integrated into our English learning programmes, like our AI-powered Digital Human Tutor, which assesses pronunciation, fluency, and vocabulary, and Mondly, which offers feedback to tutors based on student performance.
To fully realise AI’s potential, it’s crucial that both students and teachers become more digitally literate. By investing in these skills, Pearson is preparing users to engage effectively with AI tools.
Education UAE: Can you explain how generative AI personalises learning experiences and improves educational outcomes?
Giovanni Giovannelli: Generative AI personalises learning by tailoring resources to meet the individual needs of each student. For example, we’ve integrated AI into Pearson’s eTextbooks, offering personalised explanations, summaries, and practice questions based on a student’s progress. This not only clarifies complex concepts but also helps reinforce learning.
The feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, with many finding the AI-generated summaries and explanations helpful, particularly during exams. AI also encourages active learning through self-testing, which leads to better retention and improved educational outcomes over time. Nearly 80% of students reported they would continue using AI tools in future courses, reflecting their value in the learning process.
Education UAE: In your opinion, what are the most important skills for English language learners to develop in the current global landscape?
Giovanni Giovannelli: Communicative competence is essential—it’s about understanding cultural nuances and non-verbal cues, which is key for effective communication in diverse environments. Digital literacy is equally important, as much of today’s communication takes place online.
Beyond language basics, critical thinking and collaboration are essential skills. English learners must be able to analyse information, engage in debates, and work in teams across cultures and languages. These skills are crucial for career advancement and success in the global economy.
Education UAE: What are some of the biggest challenges facing English language learners today, and how can they be addressed?
Giovanni Giovannelli: The biggest challenges include barriers in professional
settings, unequal access to digital tools, and the need to balance standardisation with localisation. We address these through targeted business English courses, investing in digital infrastructure, and creating flexible learning modules that can be adapted to different contexts.
Personalisation of learning is also a challenge, but AI can help make this scalable and cost-effective. Lastly, keeping learners
In the MENA region, bilingual education and STEM-focused e-learning are growing trends, preparing students for a globalised economy
motivated requires innovative methods like gamification, real-world tasks, and social learning environments.
Education UAE: How do you see the role of educators evolving in the field of English language learning?
Giovanni Giovannelli: Educators are evolving from instructors to facilitators and tech specialists.
With the integration of AI, teachers are guiding students to become more independent learners while using technology to personalise learning. They are also cultural guides, especially in diverse regions like the UAE, where understanding global communication is crucial.
Educators must also be lifelong learners, continually updating their skills to stay relevant. Pearson supports this with initiatives like the Back-to-School AI Webinar Series, helping teachers integrate AI into their classrooms. As AI transforms education, educators are becoming even more vital, and we’re committed to ensuring they are well-equipped for this transition.
Education UAE: What role do you think collaboration with local educational institutions plays in Pearson's strategy in different markets, including Dubai?
Giovanni Giovannelli: Collaboration with local institutions is essential to our strategy. In Dubai, a largely private education market with a diverse student population, partnerships allow us to tailor our offerings to local needs. We’ve worked with groups like GEMS and UAE’s Applied Technology Schools, providing digital English courseware and assessments.
These partnerships not only help us grow but also align with the UAE’s broader goals of workforce development and preparing students for a globalised economy. Expanding these collaborations will be central to Pearson’s growth in the region.
Education UAE: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the English Language Learning division at Pearson over the next few years?
Giovanni Giovannelli: Our goals are to drive innovation, expand our reach, and ensure inclusivity in everything we do. We aim to become the leading destination for English
learners to both learn and demonstrate proficiency.
We see significant growth opportunities in emerging markets like the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Our focus will be on developing AI-powered assessments, immersive digital courseware, and personalised learning platforms. We’re also expanding our test centres and enhancing accessibility for students.
We’ll continue to support educators through professional development, empowering them to integrate new technologies into their teaching. By focusing on these areas, we aim to lead the way in English language learning globally.
In the UAE, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) has seen over 25% growth in test volumes, indicating strong demand and confidence in the test
Education UAE: In today's globalised economy, how do corporate language training and assessment programmes like yours align with the evolving needs of multinational corporations and diverse workforces?
Giovanni Giovannelli: Pearson’s corporate language training and assessment programmes are designed to meet the evolving needs of multinational corporations. Our tools, like Mondly, offer immersive language learning experiences tailored to real-life tasks, while Versant provides reliable language proficiency assessments.
By offering customised learning journeys and data-driven insights, we help corporations ensure their employees have the language and soft skills needed to thrive in a globalised economy. This alignment between language training and corporate needs is critical in today’s interconnected world.

Education UAE: What does motivation mean to you, and how can it be fostered in children and young adults pursuing sports?
Mark Colbourne: Motivation, to me, comes in many forms, and it must include a state of positive change. For children, it must include fun and can certainly be a motivator, as can happiness. However, motivation must have
a reward of some kind for everyone, and in sport, the reward must be in taking part, not just winning, as the uncertainty of winning or not is what excites us.
Education UAE: In your experience, what role does ambition play in a young athlete's journey towards achieving their goals?
Mark Colbourne: Ambition is critical in any young person’s goals. However, educating someone that they have to accept the outcome can be daunting in some circumstances, as not winning can be seen as a failure, but giving 100% is the true victory and being proud of giving your best.
Education UAE: Can you share some practical tips on how young athletes can cultivate enthusiasm for their chosen sports discipline?
Motivation for children, must include fun and can certainly be a motivator, as can happiness
Mark Colbourne: My first tip would be to understand how the body and brain work in harmony together. Truly ask yourself, ‘Why do you want to do this sport?’ Know your why and evaluate the reasons for wanting to commit 100%, and ensure you master all the aspects that go with the sport: diet, hydration, sleep, rest, fun, and staying positive in all areas.
Education UAE: What do you believe are the key elements that define talent, and how can young people identify their own talents in sports?
Mark Colbourne: Firstly, it is important to recognise that we are never the finished article, and all good things take time. Spotting a glimpse of brilliance in someone needs careful management if they are keen to succeed. Additionally, being coachable is a key factor for most successful Olympic medallists.
Education UAE: How can experiences of failure and setbacks contribute to a young person's development and drive to succeed in sports and life?
Mark Colbourne: This needs to be taught to young people, so they understand that it is okay to fail, as everyone fails at something, but not trying is an even bigger failure. Giving your best effort is all you can do, and for self-development, it is good to learn to accept your best, even if you are not the best.
Education UAE: As someone who has achieved great success as a Paralympic cyclist, what advice would you give to young athletes struggling to reach their goals?
Mark Colbourne: Do not compare yourself to others, but learn from what they have done and aim to repeat it, just do it better. A goal can be set without actually evaluating if you have the skills and capability to reach it. A simple test is to ask your best friend if they think you are good enough to win or strong enough to lose.
Education UAE: What role do parents and mentors play in motivating children to pursue sporting excellence?
Mark Colbourne: Parents need to learn the elite sports psychology around how to motivate children through features and benefits. The majority of children enjoy movement or exercise when they are young but often become lazy when they realise relaxing is an option. However, staying in the comfort zone can be detrimental to our
health and overall metabolism, leading to a negative mindset and poor behaviour.
Education UAE: How important is it for young athletes to set both short-term and longterm goals, and how can they effectively do this?
Mark Colbourne: It is important to set realistic short-term goals but also to learn how to focus on the process, not the outcome, which is the long-term goal. Additionally, understand that along the way, change will always happen, and when it does, it is okay to reset the plan to accommodate the process.
Education UAE: Can you share a story or example of what has inspired you or others to overcome challenges in pursuit of their goals?
Mark Colbourne: My personal story, which inspired me to overcome challenges in pursuit of my goal, was when my late father passed away a day before the World Track Championships in Los Angeles in February 2012. I knew my dad was not coming back, and I wanted to ensure I never had any regrets about not racing, so I could prove to my mum and my daughter that I was strong enough to win. As any good man can become a great man, but not every great man can become a good man.
Ambition and acceptance is critical in any young person’s goals

UAE parents anticipate as much as AED 600,000 for their children’s higher education, Zurich survey reveals
Parents who start early and choose the right education savings plan are better positioned to secure their children's futures.
Arecent survey has unveiled that parents in the UAE anticipate between AED 250,000 and AED 600,000 in funding their children's higher education. Despite these significant costs, many parents are unprepared financially as the survey revealed that 29% have yet to begin saving for their children’s university education.
The survey by market research company YouGov, commissioned by Zurich International Life (Zurich), part of Zurich Insurance Group, highlights a critical financial gap that could affect the educational opportunities available to many children. With 63% of respondents anticipating such high costs, the study calls attention to a significant financial responsibility that many families aim to fulfil.
Reliance on traditional saving methods
Traditional saving methods still dominate in the region, with 77% of the 1,000 residents surveyed opting for bank deposits, while 48% invest in shares. However, only a small fraction (14%) of respondents are utilising education-specific savings plans, which are designed to enhance growth and provide targeted benefits for educational expenses.
While conventional deposits offer safety, their typically lower returns may not be sufficient to keep pace with the increasing costs of higher education. Educationfocused savings plans, which often include investments in growth-oriented funds, remain a more strategic approach. These plans are designed to accumulate savings while also outpacing inflation, ensuring that the value of savings does not diminish over time.
“While the substantial costs associated with higher education underscore the urgent need for effective savings strategies, starting early and choosing the right education savings plan can be a game-changer in helping parents save today for their children’s happily ever after," said David Denton-Cardew, Head of Propositions, Zurich in the Middle East.
According to the survey, most parents believe allocating 6% to 20% of their monthly salary is sufficient for education savings. The survey however emphasises that more effective and affordable savings plans are needed. Empowering parents to give their children the best chance at their dreams with a tailored education savings plan remains a sustainable strategy.
An overwhelming 87% of respondents expressed strong interest in education savings plans that also offer life insurance cover. These dual-purpose plans help in accumulating funds for education and provide a safety net that ensures financial security for the family, should the worst happen.
As education costs soar, starting early, and exploring various savings options, including dual-purpose plans, can offer a balance of growth and security.
“Having a well-structured education savings plan does more than just save money; it helps grow your money through appropriate investment strategies and ensures the protection of that investment. This strategy has some notable benefits including flexible payment options and the ability to tailor the plan to meet individual financial goals. The substantial costs associated with higher education underline the urgent need for effective savings strategies,” noted David
Parents could consider plans that offer tailored solutions, long-term growth and the added peace of mind of life insurance cover to satisfy this goal. By adopting a strategic approach to savings, parents can have better chances to achieve their children’s educational goals.

by Clare Mackintosh
Grief is universal but the at the same time, isolating. Clare Mackintosh’s first non-fiction work is the book she was looking for when she lost her five-week-old soon. It offers a compassionate guide through the darkness for anyone navigating a loss, especially parents. The book cover is an ode to a woman who offered support to the author in the early stages of her grief and symbolises the flowers Mackintosh plants in remembrance of the child she lost.
Drawing on her personal experiences, Mackintosh writes with a raw authenticity that resonates deeply with those who are walking a similar path. She challenges the notion that grief follows predictable stages that are easily labelled and traversed, instead presenting it as a unique journey filled with ever-changing emotions—sometimes overwhelming, other times fleetingly subtle.
Formatted in 18 chapters to reflect each year the author has lived without her son, it is an anthology of assurances that reads as part-memoir, part self-help. Not every passage will be relatable to every reader at a given point in time but its promise - that it won’t always hurt like this – is healing and hopeful.

As students and educators settle back into their daily routines, balancing classroom commitments with after-school activities can be challenging. For both teachers and students in Dubai, managing time efficiently is crucial, and this is where the convenience of car rentals comes into play, offering a flexible and stress-free solution for busy schedules.
For teachers, renting a car means more than just getting from point A to point B. It’s about having the freedom to manage their day without relying on public transport or ride-hailing services. With a rental car, teachers can easily commute to school, attend afterschool meetings, and even manage personal errands, all without the constraints of fixed schedules. The flexibility of car rentals allows educators to maximise their time, ensuring they can focus more on what matters most: their students.
Students, particularly those involved in extracurricular activities, also benefit greatly from car rentals. Whether it's attending sports practice, music lessons, or group study sessions, having access to a car makes it easier to juggle multiple responsibilities. It provides students with the independence to manage their own time, ensuring they can participate fully in both academic and extracurricular pursuits.

Special needs support in education is rapidly evolving, with a growing emphasis on neurodiversity, mental health, and inclusive practices. The neurodiversity movement is reshaping how conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia are viewed. Rather than seeing them as deficits, educators are adopting neuro-affirming approaches that celebrate different ways of thinking and learning, leading to more personalised and flexible support systems in schools.
Mental health is a major focus, with schools recognising the link between emotional wellbeing and learning.
Trauma-informed practices and wholeschool wellbeing strategies help students feel safe and supported, addressing challenges like anxiety and emotional regulation.
Technology continues to drive these advancements, with tools like IDL and Texthelp, along with adaptive learning platforms, opening new learning pathways. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is becoming more common, offering flexible learning environments that provide options for students without overburdening teachers.
Early identification remains critical, with improved screening tools helping schools detect developmental and learning differences earlier. Timely interventions and conversations with parents can significantly improve long-term outcomes for students.
Inclusion now extends beyond the classroom, with efforts to integrate students into all areas of school life, including extracurricular activities and social settings. Schools are also placing a greater emphasis on supporting students into further education, training, or employment, ensuring vulnerable young adults have a clear path beyond school.
As awareness grows, so does the identification of neurodiverse students. This doesn’t indicate an increase in neurodiversity but reflects better knowledge and understanding.
Ultimately, schools are aligning their ethos with inclusive practices, creating supportive environments where all students can thrive, regardless of their abilities or challenges, and building a future that values diversity.
If your child or school needs support, contact the team and one of us will help put you on the right track, quickly and with short term success.
LOUISE DAWSON PROFESSIONAL AND MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT
In today's interconnected society, acquiring fluency in a second language has become increasingly vital, particularly for young students. Proficiency in multiple languages not only opens doors to diverse career opportunities but also fosters cross-cultural understanding from an early age. Among the languages gaining prominence on the world stage, Chinese stands out as a key to unlocking one of the most ancient, complex, and influential cultures. Given China's pivotal position in global economics, science, and politics, acquiring fluency in Chinese offers children a substantial head start in navigating the interconnected world of tomorrow.
hihilulu, an innovative languagelearning platform, is revolutionising how children aged 3-12 approach this challenge. By combining modern educational methods with playful and interactive content, hihilulu makes learning Chinese not just an academic pursuit but an enjoyable adventure. By offering an array of entertaining activities and engaging stories, hihilulu captures the attention of young learners, fostering their natural language acquisition while encouraging their inquisitiveness and imagination.
hihilulu was founded by Jennifer Huang, inspired by her personal journey as a mother raising her children in France. Wanting them to learn their heritage language in the most natural way possible, she sought a method
that would mirror how children acquire their native language—through immersion. Recognising that traditional methods of language instruction often lacked engagement, Jennifer set out to create a solution that blended her vision of immersive learning with the best modern educational techniques.
Since 2021, hihilulu has been delivering its innovative language programme in prestigious schools across Paris, establishing itself as a trusted partner in early childhood education. Jennifer’s goal of making Chinese both accessible and enjoyable for young learners laid the groundwork for a platform that is now recognised internationally. Her deep commitment to creating a meaningful, culturally rich experience has helped hihilulu become a vital tool in language education.
The programme mimics the way children naturally learn to speak their native language. Instead of focusing on rote memorisation or isolated vocabulary, hihilulu immerses children in an interactive environment filled with engaging stories, games, and animations.
This immersive, play-based approach allows children to absorb Chinese naturally, reinforcing comprehension through context and interaction. The platform turns language learning into an adventure, making it an integral part of the child’s everyday play.
hihilulu also recognises that every child learns at their own pace. The platform customises its content to match each learner’s individual progress, offering a fully personalised experience.
Whether through captivating animations, interactive activities, or playful games, hihilulu ensures each child remains engaged and motivated while steadily building their language skills. The result is a learning experience that not only enhances linguistic ability but also boosts confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong appreciation of Chinese culture.
The Dualism Theory
hihilulu has a deep commitment to developing a natural pedagogy for children’s Chinese language acquisition. Its approach is grounded in early language immersion techniques and the Dualism Theory of Chinese language education, as advocated by Professor Joel Bellassen, the first General Inspector of the Chinese Language for the French Ministry of Education.
The Dualism Theory emphasises a balance between two key aspects: the systemic study of Chinese characters and the practical use of spoken Chinese. His theory advocates for a deeper understanding of the language’s unique script and structure, while also focusing on practical communication skills. This dual approach has influenced many teaching methods, especially in the West, particularly in how non-native speakers are taught Chinese.
hihilulu’s pioneering platform has garnered global attention for revolutionising language education. Recently, international media outlets have spotlighted its significant impact, recognising how it transforms the way children learn languages. The platform’s unique approach to immersive learning has caught the eye of educators and parents worldwide, as it redefines traditional methods with its interactive and engaging content.
The platform’s advantages are being observed directly by schools around the world. Many institutions have reported remarkable improvements in students’ language acquisition, noting how hihilulu’s dynamic, play-based learning approach helps children absorb Chinese naturally and with greater enthusiasm. As a result, hihilulu is becoming a preferred choice for schools seeking innovative ways to introduce young learners to one of the world’s most important languages, making language education not only more accessible but also more enjoyable.
“The curriculum is very strong, organised, and systematic”
Stéphane Lebrati, President of Paris-based Le Petit Cours du Rocher, a private, traditional school offering bilingual French-English Preschool, Nursery and Primary education, founded in 1953, said: “We decided to start an extracurricular Chinese programme five years ago at the request of our families. We started off having Chinese teachers, but the curriculum was sometimes random, and the families were not happy. So we met Jennifer from hihilulu, and I was very impressed with the passion of the teachers, their training, their expertise, and commitment to their students. The kids are learning in school, but also out of school, thanks to the technology hihilulu is deploying. The curriculum is very strong, organised, and systematic. Every year we have seen enrolment grow, and we can only recommend hihilulu to any school that is looking to start a Chinese programme.”
hihilulu makes learning Chinese not just an academic pursuit but an enjoyable adventure
Learning Chinese has become increasingly important in the modern world for several compelling reasons, spanning economic, cultural, and geopolitical factors. One of the most significant aspects is China’s economic influence; as the second-largest
economy globally and a major player in international trade, technology, and innovation, the ability to communicate in Chinese opens doors to countless business and career opportunities.
Learning Chinese also provides a rich cultural understanding. The language is not just a means of communication; it serves as a gateway to one of the world’s oldest and most influential civilisations. From Confucian philosophy to modern Chinese cinema, understanding Chinese culture allows for deeper engagement with its literature, art, history, and traditions, which have shaped human civilisation.
Learning Chinese opens up a plethora of educational avenues, including academic exchange programmes, scholarships, and study abroad experiences in China, providing unique insights into the language and culture firsthand. Additionally, studies suggest that learning a language like Chinese enhances cognitive flexibility, memory, and problem-solving abilities, skills that are valuable across various areas of learning and personal development.
As parents look for resources to prepare their children for a global future, hihilulu stands out for its ability to combine language learning with an enriching cultural experience. It’s more than an educational tool—it’s a gateway to a new world of discovery.
GESS Dubai 2024 to Spotlight EdTech as GCC International Schools Ramp Up Investment in AR and AI Technologies
The Global Educational Supplies and Solutions (GESS) Dubai, organised by Informa Connect, returns for its eagerly awaited 17th edition from 12 to 14 November 2024, at the Dubai World Trade Centre, Sheikh Saeed Halls 1 to 3.
This year’s focus is on the rapid growth of EdTech, particularly augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. International schools in the GCC region are increasingly dedicating their budgets to these innovative solutions. The GCC EdTech market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.12% from 2024 to 2030. Governments across the region are making education and technology central to their strategies for economic transformation and national development.
According to data compiled by ISC Research exclusively for GESS Dubai, the demand for educational supplies continues to grow, driven by the increasing number of international schools in the GCC. This number has risen to 1,653 (a 6.5% increase from 2023), catering to a total student population of 1,712,894 (an 8.4% rise from 2023). The international schools’ market is growing globally due to factors like increased globalisation, expatriate mobility, and a greater demand for high-quality, culturally diverse, and internationally recognised education.
Countries that aim for economic stability and prosperity through foreign direct investment (FDI) and significant public spending tend to attract more international talent and businesses. This increases the immediate demand for international schooling for expatriate workers while also fostering a more affluent local population that favours international education over time. In the GCC, strategic projects like Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, Qatar’s National Vision 2030, and Oman’s Vision 2040 have been crucial in improving services, infrastructure, and economic diversification. These initiatives continue to attract expatriates, elevate local affluence, and deepen interest in global education.
At the forefront of emerging EdTech are Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality. Schools across the GCC are integrating new technologies in varied ways, reflecting different levels of enthusiasm and resources. For instance:
In Qatar, a school raised fees to fund new systems and AI exploration.
In Kuwait, AI is being used for tasks like lesson planning and communication, and one school is using it to help second-language learners and nonnative English-speaking teachers improve their presentations, emails, and other forms of communication.
A school group in Bahrain has developed a custom AI system that conducts diagnostic tests and recommends personalised learning opportunities, leading to a 5% increase in student performance over the past year.
In Saudi Arabia, international schools are starting to incorporate AI, though they are mainly in the early stages, focusing on administrative tasks and faculty upskilling. Meanwhile, the UAE is at a more advanced stage, with schools using tools like ChatGPT for lesson planning and policy writing. Across the region, schools are exploring how best to integrate these technologies into the curriculum, while maintaining academic integrity and addressing concerns around plagiarism. Comprehensive policies are still evolving, guided by international frameworks like those from the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO).
Other key areas of investment include infrastructure and maintenance, digital and remote learning tools, and traditional resources such as textbooks and educational schemes. Efforts to enhance the physical environment include adding science labs, maker spaces, and adaptable furniture for flexible learning. Digital tools, such as Apple iPads, Google Chromebooks, and educational robots, are also increasingly used to support flexible and remote learning. Despite the digital shift, traditional resources like textbooks remain essential, indicating a balanced approach that blends both digital and traditional learning methods.
Schools are also focusing on student wellbeing, with some adjusting academic schedules to reduce stress, provide more rest time, and offer extracurricular activities. Anti-bullying campaigns and initiatives to promote inclusivity and diversity are also gaining traction. This emphasis on wellbeing is in line with the growing shift towards student-centred
education, where success is measured not only by academic achievement but also by the overall health and happiness of students. Additionally, 50% of surveyed schools plan to invest in leadership training to help teachers support their mental health.
As the leading education conference and exhibition in the Middle East, GESS Dubai has championed educational innovation for 17 years. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to engage with over 8,000 education professionals from across the globe, including key decision-makers and buyers from 74 countries, fostering valuable partnerships and expanding their presence in the region.
Beyond the exhibition floor, GESS Dubai’s comprehensive and free-to-attend CPD accredited conference programme, seminars, and panel discussions will offer exceptional opportunities for professional development and networking. The talks and workshops will be hosted in various zones:
GESS Talks Stage: Featuring dynamic discussions from speakers and guests of GESS podcasts and webinars. Attendees can participate in armchair chats, panel sessions, and solo talks, followed by opportunities to exchange ideas.
Leaders in Education Conference: Exclusively for principals and leaders, this will address the challenges faced by school leaders and focus on the skills needed for success in senior roles.
Sustainability and Wellbeing Hub: Experts and educators will discuss integrating sustainability into curricula, addressing students’ climate change concerns, exploring mindfulness techniques, and more.
Gaming @ GESS: This new addition will inspire educators to explore gamification, game-based learning, esports, and game design. Attendees will engage in demos, discussions, and even student-led tournaments.
Product Showcase: Exhibitors will demonstrate the latest innovations in education to buyers, sparking conversations about how these can be integrated into educational institutions.

On 13 November 2024, the GESS Awards will celebrate excellence in education. With categories for suppliers, distributors, teachers, schools, and educational professionals, the awards will highlight the quality and diversity of educational products, services, and people. World Teachers' Day, observed annually on 5th October, is a global celebration that honours the invaluable contributions of teachers to society. Established by UNESCO in 1994, the day commemorates the adoption of the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which set international standards for the rights and responsibilities of educators.
This day provides an opportunity to reflect on the pivotal role teachers play in shaping future generations. They not only impart knowledge but also foster critical thinking, nurture creativity, and inspire students to achieve their full potential. From primary classrooms to higher education institutions, teachers are the foundation upon which societies build their future leaders, innovators, and citizens.
The theme for each year highlights key challenges and achievements in education. It underscores the need to ensure that teachers are well-supported, respected, and adequately trained. As the world faces new educational challenges, particularly in the wake of global crises, recognising the adaptability and dedication of teachers has never been more crucial.
World Teachers' Day serves as a reminder to appreciate and support educators who continue to inspire and shape lives, regardless of the challenges they face in an everevolving world.
In a gesture of appreciation, Brighton College Abu Dhabi treated their staff to complimentary hot drinks and pastries, along with relaxing massages and facials offered by Lush.
This World Teacher's Day, Brighton College Al Ain expressed gratitude by distributing ‘thank you’ cards to the dedicated, passionate and inspirational teachers and support staff who create outstanding learning opportunities for pupils every day. Event Details:
Dates: Until 31st October
Location: MOTIONGATE™ Dubai
Halloween is celebrated on 31st October each year and has roots in ancient Celtic traditions, particularly the festival of Samhain, where it was believed that the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred. This festival marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Over time, Halloween evolved, incorporating various customs and traditions, leading to the celebration we know today, characterised by costumes, trick-or-treating, and spooky decorations.
Fun Ideas for Parents and Teachers
Costume Parade - Organise a costume parade at school or in the neighbourhood where children can showcase their costumes. You could even have a contest for the best costume in various categories.
Pumpkin Decorating - Instead of carving, have a pumpkin painting or decorating party. Use nontoxic paints, markers, or stickers for a creative and safe activity.
Halloween Crafts - Create spooky crafts such as ghostly garlands, paper plate monsters, or DIY Halloween cards. These can be simple and require materials easily found at home.
Story Time - Read Halloween-themed books to children. Choose age-appropriate, fun stories that capture the spirit of the holiday, like 'Room on the Broom' by Julia Donaldson or 'The Pumpkin Patch Parable' by Liz Curtis Higgs.
Haunted Scavenger Hunt - Set up a scavenger hunt with Halloween-themed clues and items to find. This can be done indoors or outdoors, making it an exciting adventure for children.
Eats and Treats to Make:
Mummy Hot Dogs - Wrap strips of puff pastry around hot dogs to make 'mummies' Bake until golden brown and add little dots of mustard or ketchup for eyes.
Witch’s Brew Punch - Make a fun green punch using a lime sorbet base, mixed with lemonade, and add gummy worms or eyeball sweets for a creepy touch.
Activities for Older Children: Escape Room Challenge: Set up a Halloweenthemed escape room at home or in the classroom with puzzles and clues related to the holiday.
Film Screening: Have a movie night featuring family-friendly Halloween films. Encourage children to come in their costumes for extra fun!
Ghostly Bananas - Dip bananas in white chocolate and use chocolate chips as eyes to create cute ghost treats.
Spider Cookies - Use chocolate cookies as a base, adding chocolate-covered pretzels for legs and chocolate buttons for the eyes.
Pumpkin Cupcakes - Bake cupcakes and decorate them with orange icing and a green fondant leaf to resemble pumpkins. You can even add little jacko’-lantern faces for fun.
Halloween can be a wonderful time for creativity, fun, and bringing communities together. With these ideas, parents and teachers can create memorable experiences for children while celebrating this spooky holiday!

PROMOTING HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE NUTRITION IN UAE SCHOOLS:
In the UAE, school nutrition guidelines are established by several key authorities including the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), Dubai Health Authority (DHA), and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). These guidelines are designed to promote healthy eating habits among children, reduce obesity, and accommodate allergies and other dietary needs.
Nutritional Value. Schools are required to ensure that the meals served are nutritious, placing an emphasis on reducing high levels of sugar, salt, and fats. Sustainable and safe food practices are essential, from production through to consumption. Meals should contain whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, while avoiding processed foods and sugary drinks.
Sustainable and Safe Food. Sustainable food choices are strongly encouraged, with particular focus on food safety due to the UAE’s hot climate. Schools and caterers must ensure proper storage, transportation, and preparation of all food.
Addressing Allergies. Schools must be mindful of students with food allergies, offering safe alternatives and ensuring allergens are clearly identified in meals to prevent any health risks.
Healthy food is defined as a balanced diet containing all the necessary nutrients for the body to perform and maintain various physical and mental activities. Since no single food contains all essential nutrients, it is important to ensure a variety of foods in children's daily meals. The five major food groups that should be incorporated are:
Cereals and Cereal Products. Including whole and processed grains such as wheat, rice, oats, and cornflakes.
Vegetables. Including a wide variety of colourful vegetables such as aubergines, potatoes, and leafy greens like spinach.
