HOW WILL THE FUTURE JUDGE US? AS THE UAE CONTINUES TO PRESS ON WITH SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST AMBITIOUS CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS, IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT 3,000-YEAR-OLD FINGERPRINTS HAVE BEEN FOUND ON ANCIENT BRICKS AT AN IRON AGE VILLAGE IN AL AIN. THE IMPRESSIONS ARE BELIEVED TO COME FROM WORKERS WHO WERE BUILDING A WALL AT HILI 2, A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. This is a major discovery and provides evidence of a skilled network of craftsmen proficient at construction. In its place, we find a vibrant community of people flourishing in a harsh landscape. Whilst ancient prints have been found before, these fresh examples are extraordinarily well-preserved. Experts are now looking to send them for forensic analysis to learn more, such as the age of the group and what building techniques they used. Excavations have already made known the existence of well-preserved ovens. Identified as tannours, they are built of clay and house burnt stones. It is thought the stones would have been heated and then sheep or goat meat would have been cooked on them. These tannours were discovered not in individual houses, but in shared spaces and it is probable they were used by families at special occasions. A clay seal with an engraving of a gazelle, which was in all probability used for decoration, was also exhumed. It makes you wonder what would be found if in 3,000 years time the Burj Khalifa was excavated by archaeologists. What would the people of 5019 think of our civilisation? Would they comment that we seemed to be far more advanced than previously thought, although had a long way to go before becoming the environmentally-friendly, peace loving species that exist in the sixth millennium? It’s an intriguing question and, short of someone inventing a time machine, is one we will never know the answer to. But just considering it can be like holding up a mirror to modern society.

COMPLETION IN SITE FOR AIN DUBAI Meraas has confirmed that Ain Dubai will be completed in time for the Expo 2020 Dubai celebrations. Standing at over 250 metres high, the structure will be over 200% taller than the first ever Ferris wheel, demonstrating Meraas’ continuous desire to push the boundaries of what’s possible with modern engineering and construction. Meraas also confirmed that the eighth and final 450-tonne temporary spoke has been successfully removed from the structure and the last of the permanent spoke cables has been installed, as progress on the project continues unabated. This process marks the first time the modern observation structure has been one complete wheel since construction began. The eight temporary spokes and braces were originally installed to hold the rim segments in place during the construction of the visually-striking wheel. As construction on Ain Dubai progresses, the colossal magnitude of the project becomes ever-clearer. With the removal of the final temporary steel spoke, the weight of the wheel rim has been entirely transferred to 192 spoke cables, which ensure the structural integrity of Ain Dubai through the process of permanent compression. Cumulatively, the eight temporary steel spokes and rim braces weighed more than 5,000 tonnes.

is unquestionable if we are going to make significant changes in curbing the effects of climate change to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Circularity in the building industry will limit our use of valuable natural resources, encourage innovation and adoption of new sustainable technologies, and ensure a more sustainable approach to economic development. Our region has one of the highest carbon footprints in the world.” According to the Strategy & Middle East’s report ‘Putting GCC Cities in the Loop’, if the GCC region transforms to a circular economy it can save almost $138billion by 2030 and reduce emissions by 150 million tons.

NEW SUSTAINABILITY REQUIREMENTS ANNOUNCED Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) has announced 19 sustainability requirements that hotel establishments across the emirate will be mandated to comply with under new directives in line with the Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) initiative. The 19 sustainability requirements have been developed to map out regulations for hotel establishments across all classifications to follow in order to support positive change within the industry. Through improvements to internal operations, hotel establishments will in turn advance the overall sustainability performance of the sector, further enhancing the competitiveness of Dubai’s tourism linked economy. The requirements cover a variety of areas, including sustainable management approaches, performance metrics, energy, food and water management plans, guest education, employee training initiatives, the presence of sustainability committees within hotel establishments, and corporate social  YOUSUF LOOTAH, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TOURISM DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENTS.

DUBAI WELCOMES SPECTRUM OF THE SEAS Dubai has welcomed innovative cruise ship Spectrum of the Seas into Port Rashid, marking its debut into the Arabian Gulf. In celebration of this significant occasion, a traditional ‘Plaques and Keys Exchange’ ceremony was hosted on-board in the presence of the ship’s captain and key industry stakeholders from Dubai Cruise Committee. Reaffirming Dubai’s position as the cruise hub of the region, Spectrum of the Seas brought almost 4,000 tourists to the Emirate in a single day and, weighing 168,666 gross tonnes, it is the largest and most advanced cruise ship to visit Dubai. WELL OF HOPE Dubai Tourism has participated in the ‘Well of Hope’ initiative by pumping 12,210 litres of water ‘virtually’ with the help of a mobile interactive device. Well of Hope was established with the objective of giving hope to millions of less fortunate people around the world. As part of the initiative, teams participated in an interactive competition by using a device that virtually simulates the pumping of large volumes of water. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI) will donate the equivalent volume of the water that was pumped virtually into the machine to people living in remote areas, with a focus on alleviating the suffering of those in dire need of access to clean water. According to published statistics, more than 844 million people around the world do not have access to clean water, which represents one out of 10 people on the planet.

Entries will be received until 21st November 2019, and the winners will be presented with valuable prizes.  SULTAN ALI AL TAHER, ACTING DIRECTOR OF THE FOOD SAFETY DEPARTMENT

Sultan Ali Al Taher, Acting Director of the Food Safety Department, said the day was celebrated within the context of ensuring food safety in the Emirate of Dubai, and the intensive efforts to achieve the strategic objectives of the Municipality by enhancing confidence in food safety. Al Taher said that this year’s theme is in line with the Municipality’s approach to have the participation of all stakeholders involved in food safety to implement an integrated system that ensures the provision of safe and high quality food in the Emirate of Dubai. “It is known that Dubai is the world’s largest food destination, as it is the most important food trade centre in the region, which imports food from around 200 countries and provides more than a billion meals a year to tourists who visit Dubai during their holidays,” he explained. To strengthen its efforts, the Municipality has launched Foodwatch, a smart platform that brings together all parties in the food chain, including food establishments, service providers, and food suppliers. This predictive digital platform has facilitated the transmission of information between regulators, food establishments, service providers, and the public, which has contributed to enhancing transparency and realising the principle of shared responsibility for food safety.

CELEBRATING WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Dubai Municipality organised several special events at Al Marmoum Desert Reserve as part of the World Environment Day celebrations. More than 500 people participated in the activities, during which they were given awareness on the significance of reducing carbon emissions and recognising the importance of climate change and its impact on all sectors of the environment, including air, water, and soil. During the event, the public was introduced to the best ways of disposing of plastic containers and replacing them with packages that can be used more than once to reduce pollution and climate change. The Municipality also showcased the advantages of its mobile station, which monitors the air. It underlined the most important elements that it measures, and its role in taking measures and procedures to protect the public from pollution.

TOGETHER FOR FOOD SAFETY Dubai Municipality has celebrated its ‘Together for Food Safety’ campaign at City Walk, coinciding with the beginning of the summer season, high temperatures, and fun-filled vacations! The campaign highlighted the importance of food safety during the summer months, particularly with regard to protecting it from pollution in order to preserve the health of both individuals and society. Meraas F&B Concepts was the main supporter of this campaign through interactive activities and fun competitions urging health supervisors to adhere to food safety standards in food establishments. Awareness tips were posted at City Walk on all dining tables to educate consumers about how to maintain their food safety, helping Dubai’s vision of building a happy and sustainable city.

PROMOTING AWARENESS AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS Dubai Municipality recently organised an exhibition at the University of Modern Sciences in Dubai to raise awareness on the culture of waste sorting, which is the first step towards building a comprehensive environmental culture among students and to promote environmental and community awareness. The exhibition showcased several awareness initiatives and projects, such as the advanced system of collection, storage and transportation of waste, and the waste separation centres project, known as the Smart Sustainability Oasis and the Wastewater Treatment Plant. These projects are distinctive in applying the highest and most advanced international standards in the sustainability of environmental safety.

aquatherm blue

FOR CHILLED WATER APPLICATION (HVAC) The aquatherm blue pipe system has been developed espcially for applications outside the potable water installation. The special fusiolen material properties give aquatherm blue pipes and fittings outstanding chemical resistance.

SYSTEM ADVANTAGES TIME SAVING

Resistance to corrosion from a wide range of aggressive media and water with low pH values and chemical participation makes aquatherm blue pipe system ideal for use in all HVAC applications.

Air conditioning systems (problems with dew-point) installed with steel pipes especially are affected by corrosion at the outer surface of the pipes. aquatherm blue pipe is manufactured from 100% corrosion resistant materials which increase the life-time of air-conditioning pipe systems considerably.

aquatherm blue pipe offers an unparalleled connection technique with its simple cut and weld fusion process. A 20 mm connection can be made in less than 8 seconds.

aquatherm blue pipe is available in:

Due to low thermal conductivity, aquatherm blue pipe maintains its operating temperature much more efficient than metal pipe systems which translates into thinner insulation. This is confirmed by case studies.

As a statement to aquatherm quality standards the aquatherm PP-R pipe systems carries a 10 year guarantee for pipe and fittings.
