B R A I N P OW E R According to a new study, children who eat fish at least once a week sleep better and have higher IQ scores than those who eat fish less frequently or not at all. After studying the eating and sleeping habits of more than 500 children, researchers found that children who ate fish weekly scored 4.8 points higher on their IQ exams than those who said they ‘seldom’ or ‘never’ consume fish. In addition, increased fish consumption was associated with better sleep quality.

EATING FRESH FRUIT CAN KEEP LUNGS YOUNG A new study has found that ex-smokers with a diet high in apples and tomatoes have a better chance of restoring their lung function than those who skimp on these foods. It also suggests that a diet rich in fruit can slow down the lung’s natural ageing process in people who have never smoked. People who ate more than two tomatoes or more than three portions of fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis had a slower decline in lung function compared with those who ate less than one tomato or one portion of fruit a day.

TAKE A REST DAY While you might feel like you’re slacking off from your training schedule, rest days are important for your body to recover. Never taking a break can make you susceptible to sore muscles, a suppressed immune system, improper sleep, a decrease in performance, and injuries. Gym newbies should rest every third day, while more experienced exercisers should take a recovery day once a week. If you’ve been pushing yourself to the max your rest day should be a complete day off, but if your workouts have been low-intensity, you can take a more active recovery day with something gentle like a yoga class or a casual walk.

F IT FO R LI F E If you want to stay strong as you get older, you need to keep building strength to combat your body’s natural muscle loss. Fitness experts have highlighted two exercises that are essential to doing this: burpees and skipping (they recommend using a weighted rope). Easily done at home, both exercises will build endurance and strength. While burpees might not be fun, they will work your whole body. Instagram-famous fitness trainer Kayla Itsines recently said a burpee with a push-up would be the exercise she’d choose if she had to pick one for a full-body workout.

S H O R TSIGHTEDNESS ON THE RISE While the focus has always been on the effects of too much screen time on children’s waistlines, experts are now also concerned about growing levels of short-sightedness. Over recent decades there has been a massive global increase in shortsightedness (reaching epidemic levels in East Asia, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea, where nearly 90% of 18-year-olds are now short-sighted). Lack of natural sunlight seems to be the key issue. So while it may not be possible to reduce the amount of screen time your children have, balancing it with time spent outdoors can help protect against developing shortsightedness.

P U P PY LOV E If you ever needed a reason to adopt a furry friend, this could be it. A recent Swedish study looked at the relationship between dog ownership and cardiovascular health. The results showed that dog owners have a lower risk of heart disease because their four-legged friends provide social support and increase their owner’s level of physical activity. While owning a dog may be particularly beneficial for people who live alone, a pet is also a great way to get the whole family out of the house for regular walks.
