Pretty much an essential for all Asian and Indian food, coriander is packed with health benefits. Rich in dietary fibre, iron and magnesium, coriander is also oozing with manganese – a mineral that helps form connective tissue, boosts calcium absorption, and ensures the healthy functioning of the thyroid gland and sex hormones. Also called cilantro, coriander is beneficial for your immune system too, as its leaves are rich in vitamin C, K and protein. Your digestive system will also thank you for incorporating this tasty herb into your diet, as it improves both liver and bowel function.

FEED YOUR SKIN
Vitamin C is essential to humans via supplements or through food and skincare, because we cannot synthesise it ourselves. It’s especially effective for your complexion as without it there is no collagen production, which is needed for healthy, firm and younger-looking skin. Look for vitamin C in your next skincare purchase to help your skin fight UV rays and pollution.

Interstitial fluid is the juice in our brain that is vital for the transportation of nutrients and removal of waste between the organs and tissues in our body. It is made up of various components including cellular waste and blood plasma, and past research links interstitial fluid flow to an increased invasion rate of brain tumour cells. Researchers have now discovered a way to measure and reconstruct the flow of this fluid, a promising sign for cancer research.
CHOOSE H2O Did you know that exercising in the water has countless health benefits and is a fun and easy way to stay healthy and fit? Can’t swim? It doesn’t matter; you don’t even need to get your hair wet. Not just for the elderly, aqua training goes beyond swimming laps and aerobics. Water provides you with resistance against which you can work your strength, speed and agility. New research shows that training under water also helps joint mobility in the hips, spine and shoulders, increases core stability and balance, and decreases muscle soreness.
Despite the fact that there is not a huge amount of research into the sparkling water phenomenon (because how can something that tastes so refreshing have no sugar, zero additives and calories), the studies that have been conducted show that sparkling water is just as hydrating as its still counterpart. The only difference between the two types of water is the carbon-infused gas that induces the bubbles which, if consumed too quickly, might make you feel fuller or result in some indigestion. Some say that carbonated water erodes your teeth and bone calcium, and while there is no scientific or physical evidence of carbonated water having a negative impact on your calcium levels, studies do show that carbonic acid – the byproduct of water and carbon gas – does have a mild erosive effect on your tooth enamel over a long period of time.
HEALTHY PETS
You may think your pet has a little ‘puppy fat’, but even carrying a little extra weight can have huge health implications. South African vets say more than half the patients they treat are overweight. October is Pet Obesity Month in SA and pet owners can visit petslimmer.co.za to find vets that are offering free weight checks during the month, to help ensure their furry friends are in tip-top shape. How do you judge if your pet is overweight? The warning signs include: • Can’t feel ribs anymore • Loss of discernible waist • P ads of fat over hips and base of tail • Waddles when walking • Finds it difficult to move • Short of breath • Bad-tempered EDGARSCLUB.CO.ZA
