HEALTHY LIVING The latest health and wellness news. By Melissa Attridge and Candice Verwey
WEARABLE TECH HELPS STROKE PATIENTS Scientists in the US are developing wearable sensors for stroke patients to use in their recovery. Rehabilitation in a clinical setting means patients are dependent on caregivers and therapists, but smartphone technology allows stroke survivors to practise their rehab exercises at home. Once exercises are assigned to a patient, microcontrollers measure the action and display the information via a smartphone to both the patient and healthcare provider, leading to faster recovery times and increased morale in housebound patients.
84 WRITE NOW! Mental-health practitioners are seeing a rise in psychological issues among people not previously at risk, due in part to the never-ending stream of information racing through our minds. Fortunately, there are many ways to relieve mental chaos and the associated anxiety, including maintaining an organised living space, eating healthily to prevent junk food-induced brain fog, and avoiding multitasking. But the best way to keep your mind free from clutter is to immediately write down everything that requires action, research or decision-making in a notebook for consideration during the course of the day. Your mind will rest with the knowledge that these things will be dealt with, and there’s far less chance that you’ll drop a ball by forgetting something important along the way.

F LOW E R P OW E R Recent research has indicated that plants do much more than make an office look pretty – employees are less stressed and more productive when surrounded by plants, water and other natural elements, which can boost mood, morale and productivity. Researchers even noted that when people simply looked at an image of natural scenery for 40 seconds, it was enough to induce a more relaxed state in the brain.

Want to know which foods are most beneficial for weight loss? Sure you do. Here are a few of the best. (You’re welcome!) Apples: The pectin in apples slows down digestion, making you feel full for longer. Fish: Lean protein is excellent for weight loss, promoting satiety and providing plenty of energy. Oats: Warming, filling and low in fat, you really can’t beat a daily bowl of good old-fashioned oats. Figs: Happy news for those with a sweet tooth – figs pack a fibre punch, slowing down the rate at which sugar hits your bloodstream, so you get to indulge your sweet craving without the subsequent sugar low. Potatoes: The Irish were onto something here. Potatoes are as filling as brown rice or bread, but contain less carbs.

Chemotherapy drugs target rapidly-dividing cells in the body, and hair cells are among the ones that divide the fastest. A new scalp-cooling technique is helping to reduce hair loss associated with chemotherapy, an often emotionally devastating side effect for patients. By reducing the temperature of the scalp before, during and after chemo treatment, blood flow to the hair follicles is restricted, minimising the amount of chemo drugs the follicles are exposed to.
C R U N C H TI M E According to a study conducted by Harvard Medical School, crunches strain your back and neck and can cause lower-back pain. In addition, they target only a few isolated muscles, so they’re not the most effective way to strengthen your core. Rather choose exercises that protect your back and neck and work more of your core muscles. Front and side planks are good options as well as leg-lowering exercises. Lie on your back, lift both legs up so that your feet are facing the ceiling. Slowly lower one leg until it is just above the ground and then lift it back up. Then do the same with the other leg.
PERSISTENT SORE THROAT?
It could be acid reflux. Other symptoms include hoarseness, indigestion, asthma, a dry cough and bad breath. However, it’s not uncommon for a chronic sore throat to be the only symptom. Chat to your GP for diet and treatment advice if you suspect your discomfort may be caused by acid reflux.
