Intermittent fasting (IF) has both short- and longterm benefits for your health and wellbeing. Shedding excess weight is certainly a shortterm benefit, but the effects of IF go much deeper: blood sugar balance, decreased inflammation and increased cognitive functioning are just some of the health perks associated with IF, not to mention studies indicating its connection to preventing certain degenerative diseases. Suddenly it’s OK to skip the most important meal of the day if you’re in a rush; your body might just thank you in the end.

GUT FEELING
It doesn’t look like the year’s biggest wellness obsession – gut health – is going anywhere. After the benefits of kombucha and sauerkraut were publicised, they were suddenly stocked in just about every café, bistro and restaurant in town. And for good reason – fermented foods rich in probiotics are great gut healers, and gut health has been linked to improving a number of medical conditions including mental health, weight, mood and digestive disorders.
PE N S A N D N E E DLE S Microneedling makes use of the skin’s natural healing abilities. The procedure involves the movement of a dermapen covered in tiny needles across the face, creating tiny punctures in the skin. Elastin and collagen are automatically activated as the body begins to heal the wounds. This results in rejuvenated skin that is smoother and more elastic.

THE POWER OF COLLAGEN We’re not talking collagen injections, but rather ingesting it to obtain a variety of benefits. Free from additives often included in other protein supplements, collagen has only one ingredient… collagen. And while our bodies produce it naturally, the process slows down as we age, starting as early as our 20s. Ingesting collagen promotes smooth skin, assists with joint pain and boosts the immune system.

Just like fashion, food goes through its fads. The latest trend, food bowls, is one that will likely stick around for some time because of its major health benefits. Food bowls are usually layered grains, pulses, veggies and protein with dips and sauces to match. The widely popular poke bowl is a raw fish salad served in a bowl and hails from Hawaii. For a selection of food-bowl ideas turn to pg 82.
YEAR OF THE RUNNER Not much has changed about running since the beginning of time. That’s what’s arguably so attractive about it: what you expect, you get – it’s usually free, you don’t need any equipment except a decent pair of running shoes, and it’s guaranteed to keep you healthy and fit. Enter the increasingly popular running club. We can see why this trend continues to grow: not only do running clubs provide a sense of community to people who are all looking for the same outcome, they’re also safer than running alone.

RAINBOW-NATION COFFEE Whether it’s a golden latte with turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties or a red-velvet (beetroot-infused) cuppa to help lower blood pressure, superfood lattes are taking the world (AKA coffee shops) by storm. They say that once you make a habit of ordering a superfood latte, you will never need another flat white again. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins to arm your immune system for the flu season, these healthy alternatives to coffee are also excellent pre- and post-workout snacks. EDGARSCLUB.CO.ZA
