Zandie Khumalo has finally stepped onto the centre stage with her debut album Izikhali ZamaNtungwa, becoming one of the country’s brightest stars. By Edwain Steenkamp Listening to Zandie Khumalo’s debut album, it’s hard to believe this is her first solo music venture. Then again, the young singer has been working in the industry for many years as a dancer, backup singer and manager for her sister Kelly Khumalo. But her real love of music goes back even further when, as a young girl, she sang in a youth choir – her saving grace as a child, she says. Despite having spent most of her life surrounded by music, Zandie still considers family her first priority, something you’ll see if you follow her on social media. Inspired by love in all its manifestations, Zandie and producer Mojalefa ‘Mjakes’ Thebe put together a soulful album, rich with different influences and sounds – a testament to her undeniable talent. While tracks like Grateful and Themba are powerful and emotionally charged ballads, songs like Seng’fikile and Fiesta are energetic and soulful. We caught up with Zandie to chat about what inspires her, who she is behind the glitz and glam and how her life has changed as a solo artist.

DESCRIBE THE MOMENT YOU DECIDED TO RECORD YOUR ALBUM, IZIKHALI ZAMANTUNGWA.
God said it was time for me to do it, and who am I to defy him? WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING IN STUDIO RECORDING YOUR OWN ALBUM?
I was in front of the mic on stage a lot when I was backing for my sister Kelly. This time around, it was quite different. It was a nerve-racking and exhilarating experience all at once. WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST WHEN YOU WRITE MUSIC?
Love and life inspire me greatly. Love of a partner and of family. My hubby told me before I started recording, ‘You are talented and your subject matter on the album is love... You can never go wrong with

I really want to take my music to people so I have a lot of gigs lined up that combination – talent and love. Ask Tyler Perry, ask R Kelly and the others – people out there are still very much for love.’ DID YOU EXPERIENCE ANY CHALLENGES WHILE PUTTING
TOGETHER YOUR ALBUM?
I wouldn’t really call them challenges – I prefer to call them lessons. I had to choose the sound that represents me best and introduces me properly to the market. In the end we had to cut three songs, even though they were really great, because we wanted a 13-track album. HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED SINCE RELEASING YOUR ALBUM?
My days have become very busy. Even the most ordinary things like going to the mall and doing shopping without being stopped is almost impossible. But I love every moment of this experience, even with the hectic schedule that comes with it.
WHAT ABOUT THE HATERS OUT THERE? IS SOCIAL MEDIA TOUGH TO NAVIGATE?
The negative people really don’t bother me. I have received a lot more love than hate. Social media is a way for me to connect with my people – nothing more and nothing less. OUTSIDE OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY, WHO IS ZANDIE KHUMALO?
First and foremost I am a wife, an aunt, a daughter and a sister. If you catch me on a night off, you’ll find me in casual clothes doing my house chores, and later in the evening I’ll be relaxing with a book and a cup of coffee.
AFTER WORKING ON SUCH A PERSONAL PROJECT FOR SO LONG, HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN IT WAS FINALLY WRAPPED UP?
WHAT IS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO DO ON YOUR BUCKET LIST WHEN YOU HAVE MORE TIME ON YOUR HANDS?
It was a really fulfilling moment for me. Putting this album together took two years so to finally have the copy in my hand, I just thought to myself, ‘Oh God, you are amazing!’
I’ve been around the world quite a few times but there’s no place like home. South Africa is beautiful, so I would love to travel around the country while not working.
THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS A REALLY TOUGH SPACE TO BE IN. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR EXPERIENCES?
WHAT DOES THE REST OF THE YEAR HAVE IN STORE FOR YOU?
Music is simply a business at the end of the day, and I come from the music-business background because I used to handle the business side of my sister’s career as well. So it wasn’t as difficult for me as it could have been. I also learned to never try too hard, accept help
