What to see, do and experience this month We caught up with Famke Koene, jewellery designer and owner of the brand Famke.

What was the first piece of jewellery you designed? A brooch consisting of three ovals soldered together. Inside each oval was an illustration of a woman – my grandmother, my mother and myself. Do you have a favourite piece in your range? It’s difficult to pick a favourite; but if I had to, it would be the Star Engraved Ring and the Compass Star Necklace.

one to watch What do you do when you’re not working? I spend time with my dog-child, Bear and husband. Weekend beach walks and mountain missions are regular activities, as well as long, lazy lunches with friends and family. Bucket-list holiday destination? Skiing in Japan. What would you splurge on if you were given R10 000? For the last two Christmases, my dad gave me the gift of being a foster mom to an orphaned elephant in Kenya. These baby elephants are victims of poaching and abandonment, and need all the help they can get to become strong and fit so they can return to

the wild. I would use the R10 000 to travel to Kenya to visit Jotto and donate the remaining money to help rehabilitate these little guys. Favourite restaurant? La Tête in Cape Town. I could eat there every night! Fantasy dinner-party guests? Chelsea Handler, Lazarus Lake and Yvon Chouinard. For more info, visit famke.co.za.

How did you get into the industry? After studying industrial design in the Netherlands, I realised I wanted to design on a smaller and more intimate scale, and jewellery design seemed like a perfect match. The sentimental aspect of it was also very appealing, as every piece I create touches someone’s heart in one way or another.

Saoirse Ronan shot to fame in Atonement and now stars in On Chesil Beach, based on Ian McEwan’s classic novel of the same name. Set in England in 1962, the movie tells the story of two newlyweds struggling to navigate the early days of their marriage.

It’s 1967 in Hillbrow and 11-year-old Phen has a bad stutter, a sick father and would rather spend his days reading books than outside playing soccer with the other boys. When he befriends a homeless man in a park who offers him unorthodox life advice, Phen starts to wonder where the man comes from, and if he has been sent to help him navigate his way through a tumultuous life.

the read OV E R B OA R D (1 June)*

Kate is a single working-class mother of three who nabbed the job of cleaning the carpets in a lavish yacht owned by wealthy playboy Leonardo. After unfairly firing her and leaving her in debt to the cleaning company that hires her, Leonardo accidentally falls overboard and lands up in hospital with no memory of who he is. Kate devises a plan to teach him a lesson, showing up at the hospital pretending to be his wife. * These prices and dates were correct at the time of print.
