COLLECTABLES AND CUR I O S I T I E S

Get that summer feeling with this coastal-themed exhibition featuring a wide variety of contemporary craft. A large range of artworks including glass, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, paintings and prints will be for sale at prices to suit all pockets.

Collecting glass is growing in popularity and there are many different types of glass to suit every taste and budget.

Beside the Seaside features leading British glassmakers, such as Art In Action winner Graham Muir, whose Wave Forms defy gravity, rising star Lauren Taylor who creates beautiful silverencrusted glass jewellery, and Ruth Dresman whose colourful vessels teem with engraved sea life. A range of flying seabirds by ceramicist Mark Haillay, seascape scenes on porcelain by Jill Ford, coastal prints by Paul Hipkiss RBSA and enamelled wave brooches by Ruth Ball will be amongst the other artworks on offer.

Gallery 9, on the second-floor, has been redisplayed to show some of the most popular types of collectable glass, including ruby glass, carnival glass, perfume bottles and uranium glass. Visitors can also discover more about how the museum collects. A new feature for the gallery is a changing display called ‘Collectomania’. It focuses on the unusual collections of private collectors and this year’s featured collections are ‘Cockerels on Cocktails’ and ‘Japonisme’.

T R AV E L L I N G LIGHT BY SARAH BLOOD, PHOTOGRAPHY BY ESTER SEGARRA

L I G H T F A N TA S T I C 17 SEPTEMBER - 19 FEBRUARY 2012 Light brings an added dimension to artworks and this exhibition highlights the work of six artists who use neon in their glass creations. Artists include Sarah Blood, whose beautifully simple sculptures are poetic and thought provoking, Keith Brocklehurst, whose figures are inspired by ancient cultures, Richard William Wheater, who uses abstract forms as well as performance art to tell his narratives, and Sharon Foley who uses familiar objects to provide an insight into challenging issues. Look out for neon workshops taking place in the Glass Quarter this autumn.
