Climb aboard the MV Kyles, the oldest Clydebuilt vessel afloat, and tour the Captain’s cabin, crew quarters and the engine room. Get hands on with a range of interactive exhibits. See the country’s largest collection of shipbuilding tools and machinery. Spanning 150 years of shipbuilding in Scotland, it includes some amazing inventions which changed shipbuilding forever. Peek inside the shipyard worker’s tenement flat and get a feel for life during the heyday of Scottish shipbuilding.

Visit the world’s first commercial ship model experiment tank at the Scottish Maritime Museum in Dumbarton. Built in 1882, the vast Denny Tank extends the length of a football pitch and was used for testing ship designs. Watch the ship model carriage running and learn about the world famous Victorian ship designer William Denny. Listen to our new oral history posts telling the story of life at Denny’s shipyard. Step into the Tracer/ Analyst Room to see the equipment they used, how ships were designed and how the test results were used and stored. Try your hand at smoothing and carving a real wax hull model. Test different hull designs in our mini experiment tank with wave making machine. Experience the working environment of the traditional model makers, clay moulders and carpenters in 1882. Discover ship models, photographs and historic objects in the propeller workshop.
