NEXT ISSUE DEADLINE: 15TH AUGUST 2011

Last year one of our Stable Favourites was the veteran sprinter, Mustard, who notched up a win – as a 13YO – at Rosehill in August and we said then it would be hard to top. Well, top it The Tatling did, taking out his Yarmouth assignment by a length. It was his 170th start and his first win since August 2009. Winner of the King’s Stand Stakes-G2 in 2004 (subsequently won by Aussie stars, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti and Scenic Blast), The Tatling was also thrice Group One placed. He now has a Facebook Fan page with 354 members … make that 355. According to his trainer, The Tatling doesn’t like to be idle and loves his racing: “When he stops showing the enthusiasm and doesn’t want to do it anymore, then we’ll stop”. And when we stop finding the good news stories amidst the heartache, we’ll stop too!

E LIZA PARK FILLY BONUS Eliza Park will this year offer broodmare owners the opportunity to breed two mares to any of the stud's following five stallions Astronomer Royal, Bushranger, Dissolved, Sharkbite or Shinzig - for $10,000 plus GST. And in a novel twist, to help combat the prevailing preference for colts in the market place, broodmare owners who end up with a filly can send the mare back in 2012 - for FREE.

People get into the racing game for a whole lot of reasons. The (slim) possibility of prestige. The social aspect. They’re just two that spring to mind, but rarely do we indulge for financial gain.

It’s never about the money …

B

ACK IN APRIL, RICH Robertson was at a ready to run sale in Texas. Now don’t be too surprised if you haven’t heard to of Robertson, the managing partner of Tri-Star Racing LLC … I certainly hadn’t until a day or so ago.

Not that the breeding is that much to write home about. The Grade 2 winner, Posse, stands for US$10,000 at Vinery in New York (some 16,000kms east of Vinery in Scone) and has a done a fairly formidable job in his seven years at stud … 15 stakes winners, around $14 million in stakes.

Anyway, it appears Rich has lived up to his name and owned quite few handy horses in his time, pretty much across the breadth of the US of A.

And the 2YO is out of the Meadowlake mare, Field of Glory, a winning half sister to another Grade 2 winner in Randaroo from the stakes winner Validated.

But the colt he saw in Texas – a 2YO by the Silver Deputy stallion Posse – caught his eye and when the youngster was passed in, Rich stepped in … snapping the horse up for $12,500. Pretty cheap actually. 11

Rich defers to the missus (don’t all the smart ones?) and they decide to call the colt Pryce’s Posse after their son Pryce. Sure, a lot of folk name their neddies after kids, siblings, parents, uncles, aunties, people they get on the turps with … but the Robertsons weren’t about to tumble in and name just ANY horse after Pryce. You see, Pryce is special. He has autism. Diagnosed at three.

TIM ICE

12

www.tracktotrack.com

Not that the Robertsons think it’s a hurdle they can’t clear better than Red Rum: “We were told that he would never speak a word and that we would probably have to institutionalise him by the time he turned 13. It was pretty dismal,” Rich explains. “But we won’t accept the odds against Pryce succeeding as an individual … we just don’t quit. My wife and I don’t have the word ‘quit’ in our vocabulary. When we received the initial diagnosis, I told the doctor, ‘I accept your diagnosis, but I will not accept your prognosis’. We focus on the possibilities.”

As Jennifer Wirth of The Saturday Post points out, in the years that followed, the Robertsons focused on autism education and awareness. Vickie Robertson put together an educational program in their home for Pryce … there were volunteers around the clock as Pryce was schooled eight-hours a day, seven days a week. The family also created The Pryce Robertson Autism Awareness Foundation in an effort to help fund autism awareness and education. The Robertsons also began participating in the racing industry in 1995 because, Robertson explains: “Pryce is a special individual and he has always loved the horses. They were a big part of him coming out into the world, being in a crowd and watching the horses. I owe a lot to the horse business and being in the horse industry.” Consequently, a portion of the winnings from every Tri-Star horse is donated to the Pryce Robertson Autism Awareness Foundation. “We initially thought of three or four names,” Rich recalls. “Then, we realized that this may be a very special horse, so I said, ‘Well, if he is going to be that special, and I have a special son with autism that put us in the horse business, I think he should be named after Pryce.” Last month, it was time to test Pryce’s Posse’s mettle, and he was floated to Arlington Park for a maiden event: “Pryce’s Posse is a nice, well-balanced horse. We got him cheap, but it’s not the size of the dog

Nicolas

SPECIAL FEATURE

BLONDEAU Fluent in French … and Equine! Nicolas Blondeau is a quiet, patient man who naturally imbues both horse and man with confidence, as LISSA OLIVER disovered recently. Nothing, in Blondeau’s world, is frightening or insurmountable and to spend an hour or two in his company: in this tranquil and safe universe, is life-changing. It’s particularly life-changing for the horses he works with, who come to him as unbroken, often unhandled, young animals and walk away after just a couple of hours as mature riding horses.

N

I C O L A S B LO N D EA U HA S been a pupil of some of France’s finest international horsemen and earned early acclaim as a gentleman rider (also practising three Olympic equestrian disciplines), but it’s as a horse breaker that he has made his mark on the international horse world. In 2005 he founded the

renowned Ecole Blondeau in Samur, France, and he has worked with such top trainers as Freddy Head, André Fabre, Pascal Bary, Alain de Royer Dupré and Jean-Claude Rouget, famously helping the great Goldikova overcome her phobia of the starting stalls. Last month Nicolas held the first public demonstration of his methods outside of France, after being invited to

Ireland’s Ballylinch Stud by John O’Connor where a crowd of nearly 60 professionals and young horse enthusiasts turned out to see him. Working with an unbroken 2YO thoroughbred filly, his method is based on the classic and well-tried principles of respect, firmness and sensitivity, aiming to: “Simplify life for man and making it feel comfortable for the horse.”

As he explained to his audience: “It is the man who needs training.” His method differs a little from the other natural horsemen such as Monty Roberts and Gary Witheford, for whom starting a horse is a very specialised talent, which takes place in an equally specialised environment. Nicolas works with the horse in its box in a step-by-step manner easily >> www.tracktotrack.com

SPECIAL FEATURE

“It can be practised without outside assistance by an individual who has a minimum of horse sense and no special installations are needed,” Nicolas points out. “You have to believe that it’s in your genes,” he told his audience, “Generations ago man was dependent on the horse and everyone knew how to break in a horse in this way. The filly’s sire and grandsire and great grandsire have all been ridden. It’s no big deal.” The essence of his method is in calm and normality and already he was having an effect on horse and audience. “You must be God to the horse,” he explained, ignoring the unusually large gathering as though it was commonplace, so that the filly also accepted it in her stride. Her trust in him complete, she also accepted bridle, reins, saddle, starting stalls and float … finally ridden quietly and calmly less than two hours later.

much higher and tighter in the mouth than would be normal. “If it hurts a little, it is no problem,” he insists, “but it is crucial in the first three days that the horse does not learn to get its tongue over the bit.” He fits a long rein to the right bit ring, bringing it up over the top of the head and through the left bit ring. By this way, as he leads the horse, the pressure will always be equal on both sides of the bit and as close to the feeling of reins when ridden as possible.

He begins with an initial assessment, using the tail as a failsafe barometer as to how relaxed and comfortable the horse is. He waits for the horse to be perfectly at ease before moving on to each step of training. “Rather than holding out my hand, which is a human gesture, I point my nose to the horse, which is what another horse would do,” he explains. When a horse turns to him and accepts him with trust, work begins. Nicolas uses a bridle without noseband and has the bit 20

assimilated by students, his method based on contact and confidence, voice and hand, and the historic relationship between man and horse.

“The horse is a grazing animal,” Nicolas says, “it wants only to be left alone to eat grass. And so we reward it with freedom.” He gently applies pressure to bring the horse to him and as soon as it responds he releases the pressure, allowing the

horse ‘freedom’. In this way it quickly learns that compliance is rewarded. When the horse understands the simple commands of ‘stop’ and ‘go’ it is ready to be led out to a paddock or yard, where it is introduced to a float, and allowed to stand beside it and sniff it.

“The stalls do not worry me, so they do not worry her,” he said, “she looks to me for a signal of what is danger and what is safe and I have shown her that they are safe.” After a short rest back in her box the filly was saddled, again in the same matterof-fact calm manner. She accepted saddlecloth and saddle as though she had been carrying them all her life and didn’t turn a hair when the

“I am not doing anything on the horse I haven’t done on the ground,” Nicolas points out, “there is nothing different, it has nothing new to learn. I am using the same aids to move it forward and to stop it.” At the end of this session the filly he had broken in was willing and relaxed and had learnt the notion of right and wrong. Ideally Nicolas likes to have a horse with him for 10 days, so that it can progress in the same quiet relaxed manner and gain a solid foundation for its subsequent education at its chosen level, but it is broken and ridden within two hours.

Nicolas, without disturbing the filly he was working with, stood on the ramp and moved it noisily, leading the relaxed filly in and out of the float several times, a process she accepted as normal. He repeated this with a set of starting stalls, the filly again accepting each new experience without concern.

girths were tightened. Nicolas then returns the horse to the outside area, to repeat the earlier training and ensure she isn’t distracted or distressed by the saddle. Returning to her box once more he ends the session by mounting and riding her around the box.

Nicolas is currently looking forward to fetching out an English translation of his bestselling book Le Débourrage, which provides a step-by-step guide to his breaking in method. Further details are available on Blondeau’s website www.ecoleblondeau.com/en

SALES BRE Now, before we start, let’s make it perfectly clear that we’re not comparing oranges with oranges … or for that matter, chestnuts with chestnuts. The accompanying charts which were sourced from Arion Pedigrees (an outstanding reference tool!), provide a breakdown of Australasia’s four major sales: Australian Easter, Gold Coast Magic Millions, New Zealand Premier and Melbourne Premier, from 2006 through to 2010.

OWEVER, IT should be noted that the facts and figures relating to the Gold Coast and New Zealand, in particular, include ‘not-soselect’ sessions.

to the very best trainers but they can’t get out and run for them, and even the best trainers still get pressure from clients to push horses along when further time in the paddock would be a more prudent route.

That said, it certainly highlights a sale such as the New Zealand Premier which, despite large numbers, sits equal with Easter in terms of its percentage of Group One winners to runners. Certainly helps when you have a horse like So You Think to hang your hat on.

Not surprisingly – given that the sale has largely built its reputation on the ideal of precocious performers – the Gold Coast Magic Millions is the only sale to offer two Group One winning juveniles this season (still, it can be a tough market to break into when Darley race and breed the Blue Diamond, Golden Slipper, AJC Sires’, Champagne Stakes and Patinack TJ Smith winners!)

In terms of overall winners to runners however, Easter reigns supreme with a massive 65% which, we hasten to add, includes 6YOs to 2YOs. The 2007 Easter chapter, for instance, can boast an incredible 80% strike rate … phenomenal figures when you think about it. Sure, in the main, Easter horses go

www.tracktotrack.com

Finally, the Melbourne Premier might lag in the Group One producing department, but one of its four ‘elite’ winners from the 2008 version is the amazing Black Caviar … what better advertisement could a sale possibly have? >>

T

HE 2 012 Golden Slipper nominations are out with a record 2037 entries … up from 1735 noms for the 2011 race. Breednet reports that of the 2037, 1217 were offered at auction with the remainder either purchased privately, leased or retained to race. From the 1217 sale graduates, 594 were sourced at an Inglis auction, 498 from Magic Millions and 125 from New Zealand Bloodstock. (Magic Millions certainly has the runs on the board of late with Phelan Ready [2009] and Sebring [2008] the last two winners offered for public sale both graduating from the Gold Coast). 27

www.tracktotrack.com

Where do you get it? It will hardly come as a surprise to note that all three million dollar yearlings from this year have been entered – the Redoute’s Choice from Sunday Joy (by Peter Moody), Casino Prince from Helsinge (Black Caviar’s half brother by Hawkes Racing) and Redoute’s Choice from Schiaparelli (by Gerald Ryan). Boom sire, Fastnet Rock – who had five runners in this year’s Slipper – heads the list with 90 entries, followed by More Than Ready (77) – sire of the aforementioned Phelan Ready and Sebring, Redoute’s Choice (72), Encosta De Lago (68) and Exceed And Excel (68). The freshman Casino Prince has 64 entries, 51 of those nominations coming from Patinack Farm which stand the son of Flying Spur. Indeed,

the breeding and racing behemoth has 178 entries, and is trailed by Darley with 168 (Darley took out its first Slipper with Sepoy in 2011, although Sepoy’s sire, Elusive Quality is only responsible for eight of the 168). Breednet makes an interesting point in that of Darley’s entrants, only five were sourced from yearling sales, including a filly by Exceed And Excel (who is having a bumper year with his juveniles), out of former Golden Slipper placegetter Media: purchased for $430,000 at Easter. As for the trainers, Gai Waterhouse (91 entries) is again heading the pack, ahead of David Hayes (72), Mick Price (57), Peter Moody (52) and Chris Waller (52). www.tracktotrack.com

COVER STORY

K R A P ELIZA S U N O B Y L L I F

S

EXUAL DISCRIMINATION has been around since Noah built his first dinghy, but while some mores have softened over time, the thoroughbred industry – certainly from a commercial perspective – has a clear preference for boys over girls. Market forces and all that. No use having a whinge. Nothing can be done about it. Well, maybe something can be done about it … in a fashion.

Leading thoroughbred stud, Eliza Park, has arrived at a rather unique way to deal with the ‘girl problem’ and at the same time assist breeders in the current economic climate. Recently Eliza Park has announced a special FILLY BONUS to any broodmare owner who breed to any two of five nominated stallions for just $10,000 plus GST: Astronomer Royal, Bushranger, Dissolved, 30

www.tracktotrack.com

Sharkbite and Shinzig. Novel sure, but here’s the clincher: if the mare produces a filly you get to send the mare back in 2012 … for FREE. “It’s a well known fact that fillies can’t go stride for stride with colts in the sales ring,” Eliza Park’s Nominations Manager, Mark Lindsay, points out. “And obviously it’s no reflection on Eliza Park’s views in relation to the merits of gender. After all, Black Caviar is by Bel Esprit and Group One winners Bel Mer and Recurring were both bred on farm. And our foundation stallion, Desert Sun, is the sire of one of the greatest racemares of our time in Sunline. “However, the reality is that when I phone a lot of broodmare owners to tell them their mare has just foaled, you can almost sense they are holding their breath as they wait to find out what the sex of the foal is.

COVER STORY “Still, the added bonus to the bonus, so to speak, is that there are a lot of owners out there that breed to race and would prefer a filly anyway. “So, not only can they save up to $7,000 on service fees in 2011, they could theoretically send two mares again next year for free!

with the reception that the son of Danetime has been getting,” Lindsay adds. “Bushranger covered an unprecedented book in Ireland for a first season sire and we’ve been told by Anne O’Callaghan that as soon as owners had a look at their Bushranger foals, they almost immediately re-booked the mare.

“And, we’d like to stress, ending up with a nice athletic type will still bring a good price, regardless of gender. A prime example was the recent Inglis Weanling Sale in Sydney when the highest priced of Sharkbite’s first crop weanlings was the filly from Pomeranz who was knocked down for $40,000 – eight times service fees.

“They’re peas in a pod and we can’t wait for the first of his southern hemisphere foals to arrive in August. We see it time and time again on the farm … some breeders hold off until the first foals are on the ground then swoop. I’ve got a feeling the same will apply for Bushranger.

“It was a similar story with another first season sire in Astronomer Royal whose filly from Treadmill realised $52,000 in Melbourne.

“There’s also been a lot of interest in Dissolved and it’s not difficult to work out why: his sire, Lonhro, is poised to take his first Australian Sires’ title and naturally he’s all the rage.

“Furthermore, each of the five stallions on offer boast considerable promise: Shinzig’s first 2YOs will race this spring, both Astronomer Royal and Sharkbite have highly acclaimed weanlings, the first of Bushranger’s Australian foals arrive this spring, and Dissolved is about to stand his first season at stud. “There’s certainly huge upside for any breeder wanting to take up the filly bonus.” Stud newcomers, Astronomer Royal and Dissolved, have generated a lot of interest, according to Lindsay and Bushranger “has produced some outstanding foals in Ireland this year”. “The O’Callaghan family, which stand Bushranger at their TallyHo Stud, are over the moon

“Dissolved was a very good racehorse and as Team Hawkes pointed out to us, Dissolved is the closest that you’ll ever see to Lonhro in the looks department. Imagine what his foals/yearlings will sell for if he throws them to type? “As mentioned previously, Astronomer Royal’s first lot of weanlings were very well received and since announcing he was coming on board, we’ve field a LOT of enquiries.

ASTRONOMER ROYAL

BUSHRANGER

DISSOLVED

SHARKBITE

SHINZIG

“I would expect – particularly with his inclusion in the filly bonus – that his book will fill very quickly. “I’m confident that a lot of breeders will take up the filly bonus. It’s a win-win situation.”

GROUP ONE WINNERS

NORTHERN DANCER

SIRELINE STARS Northern Dancer rules OK! Well, tell us something we don’t know. However, as TARA MADGWICK points out in her Breednet column, it’s not all one way traffic.

www.tracktotrack.com

G

ROUP ONE racing for this season in Australia has concluded with the running of the Tatts Winter Stakes: high class filly, Yosei, claiming a third victory at the elite level to confirm her status as one of the best fillies in the land.

between them, won 14 Group One races.

In total, we had 50 individual Group One winners of 68 Group One events with several multiple winners this year cutting down the number of individual Group One winners, led by Black Caviar, So You Think and More Joyous who,

Within the Northern Dancer dynasty it was still the Danzig line that dominated with 13 individual winners or 33%, but the line is now splintering into several distinct branches that have achieved notable success.

The Northern Dancer line accounted for 29 Group One winners or 58% of the total which is down slightly on the last few years with the Mr Prospector and Turn To lines through Sir Ivor, Halo and Roberto making headway.

GROUP ONE WINNERS The Sadler's Wells, Nureyev, Fairy King branches produced nine, while the Storm Cat line also weighed in with four Group One winners.

Group One winners in Australia for 2010-2011

With so much Northern Dancer blood in our mare population it’s not hard to see why the Turn To line is on the rise and Mr Prospector likewise as breeders seek new blood to reinvigorate families saturated in Northern Dancer. Only two of our Group One winners this year are completely free of Northern Dancer and they are Ilovethiscity and Response.

The100 CLUB

SPECIAL FEATURE

T

HERE ARE NO SECRET handshakes, or rules, and a decent pedigree – albeit advantageous – is no barrier to membership.

However, the 100 Club is still very exclusive given that there are only 11 card carriers among a population of 863. To gain admittance to the 100 Club, stallions must produce 100 individual winners during the season and, as you can see from the accompanying charts, 11 of them met the criteria in 2010/11.

COMMANDS

ENCOSTA DE LAGO

Amazingly, while 11 made this grade this time around, 10 years ago, Danehill made it a club of one. Obviously plenty of people will be quick to point out why it is so, but we’re a little perplexed given the numbers. For instance, there were 1,135 stallions standing at stud in Australia in 2001 (covering 26,694 mares) compared to 863 in 2009 (covering 24,580 mares), while in 2001/02 – and this is where you lose me – there were 21,125 flat races compared to 19,281 flat races in 2009/10. So effectively, there are less stallions and fewer races than 10 years ago, but there are 10 more 100 Club members? Leading the charge this season is the highly prolific Commands with 145 winners, capping off a memorable year for the Darley based stallions given that Lonhro is about to capture his first Australian General Sires’ title by earnings and Exceed And Excel (who is also leading

2YO Sire by winners – by a long way) has also joined the 100 Club for the first time. Indeed, the Darley trio also boast the best strike rate of the 11 with Lonhro’s 54.3% followed by Exceed And Excel 52.3% and Commands 45.0%. Full kudos to Commands though who has produced 10 stakes winners this season and is now the leading sire by winners for the past two seasons with a top two finish for the past four. And full marks to Coolmore’s Encosta de Lago for his sheer consistency … he first appeared in 2003/04 – knocking Danehill off the pedestal – and hasn’t been out of the top four since. Honourable mention too for Fastnet Rock, a third season sire who has, at the time of going to press, got 92 winners – from just 188 runners – and is a ‘given’ to crack the ton next season. Still, in the gone but never forgotten category is the breeding phenomenon that was Danehill … the sire of Fastnet Rock and four of the Club members, including Commands. Others have gotten close – and even exceeded – the freak of nature’s strike rate in terms of winners to runners, but as you can see from the charts, Danehill was the only stallion to produce over 20 stakes winners in a season (three times) and in 2001/02, he was producing 13% stakes >> winners to runners! www.tracktotrack.com

IRISH NATIONAL STUD It has been a turbulent time over the past two years for the Irish National Stud. However, the ship is about to steady, due largely to the vociferous support of Facebook ‘saviours’. LISSA OLIVER profiles the Irish National Stud – both past and present.

TATE OF PLAY

Accusations of harassment and bullying in the workplace were directed at then Manager, John Clark, resulting in a recent and expensive out-ofcourt settlement to former nominations manager, Julie Lynch. Clark’s tenure was further clouded by allegations of excessive expenses claims, which were highlighted when company accounts revealed losses of n2.3m (A$3m) in the year ending 2008. Clark resigned in 2010 in order to pursue his long-held ambition of becoming a bloodstock consultant, currently acting as adviser to the Tsui family. His role at the Irish National Stud (INS) was filled by John Osborne, whose late father Michael had previously held the position.

Nevertheless, the Chairman’s Report of 2009 was particularly optimistic, given the recession hitting Ireland, revealing that the INS had held a significant share of the stallion market, successfully competing with breeding giants Coolmore and Darley, while INS-owned yearlings had reaped n0.8m (A$1m) at the sales. In other sectors of the Stud’s business, tourism had fetched in n0.5m (A$600,000) and the Breeding Diploma Course a further n0.2m (A$260,000). A realistic cost reduction target of n1m was set for 2010. The Stud’s annual turnover in 2009 was over n5.6m (A$7.4m), though it ended the year showing losses of n 4.2m (A$5.5m). The future of the INS looked particularly bleak earlier this year when a controversial

report commissioned by the Irish government – published at the end of April – recommended the sale of the Irish National Stud. The report suggested: “There is a limit as to how long the company can continue to trade at a loss before it will have to raise funds elsewhere, either by disposing of assets or by an injection of equity. The Department of Finance has already made equity injections of n1 million in 2000 and n1.1 million in 2006 to fund investment in bloodstock.” It can be argued that any investment in the industry is well spent, with the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association ‘Dukes Report’ showing that 17,000 jobs (already a significant decrease from 22,000 in 2009) hinge directly on racing, largely >> www.tracktotrack.com

SPECIAL FEATURE accordingly, the need for retaining such a facility in state ownership should be reviewed.” In response to such claims, the industry quickly came together to form a Facebook Group, Save The Irish National Stud, which gained over 500 members worldwide within just 24 hours and is currently over 1,200 strong. Stallions such as Invincible Spirit, rising star Big Bad Bob and latest sensations Jeremy and Amadeus Wolf disprove the theory that the INS no longer provides access to the best stallion lines, while the INS role of educator ensures that Ireland continues to remain a world leader, through it’s internationally renowned Breeding Diploma Course. As a popular tourist facility, the INS also attracts as many as 125,000 visitors each year, most of whom are not industry professionals or equine enthusiasts, yet are introduced to the thoroughbred for the first time: with the potential to become future clients and supporters.

in rural areas where no other job opportunities exist, while the industry contributes n1.1 million annually to the national economy, making the two equity injections, thus far, look paltry. “The Irish thoroughbred breeding industry is mature and a world leader,” the Report conceded, “the National Stud no longer plays a critical role in providing access for Irish breeders to the best stallion lines and, 40

The INS is not only a valuable resource to European breeders, but to the Global industry as a whole and suggestions that it should be disposed of met with stiff opposition from the Irish thoroughbred sector. Within a month, however, nothing could have caused the Irish government greater embarrassment than the potential loss of the INS given that it was showcased, both nationally and internationally, as part of the historic Royal Visit by Queen Elizabeth II. The following day the INS received the most number of

SPECIAL FEATURE visitors recorded in any one day. John Osborne posted on the Save The Irish National Stud Facebook: “Thanks everybody for all the support on our behalf over the last few weeks. Today we had a wonderful day and I hope the message is being heard loud and clear.” From the false scare in April, and the sorrow caused by the accidental death of leading INS sire Verglas, there is now no doubting the strength of the INS and its importance to the Irish government as one of Ireland’s jewels in the crown. Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, has already pledged his support and the government has since announced that the suggestions within the commissioned report are highly unlikely to be acted upon.

Minoru had been named after the son of Tassa Eida, the Japanese horticulturist who designed the famous Japanese Gardens at the Stud in 1910: now a popular tourist attraction. The gardens have since been extended and include the beautiful and tranquil St Fiachra’s Gardens, with lakes and grottos. Also within the Stud is the National Horseracing Museum, home to many rare and historical pieces, not least the skeleton of Arkle, painstakingly unearthed, >>

HISTORY Beginning life as the Tully Stud, founded by eccentric astrologer Colonel HallWalker, the Irish National Stud was gifted to the British nation in 1916, thus becoming known as the National Stud. In 1943 it was returned to the Irish State and became the Irish National Stud, but not before once again providing the reigning monarch, King George VI, with Classic winners. Among the 1940 yearlings presented to the King were subsequent Two Thousand Guineas winner Big Game and fillies’ Triple Crown heroine Sun Chariot. Earlier, Hall-Walker had leased to King Edward VII his favourite colt, Minoru, who remains the only Derby winner to be owned by a reigning monarch. www.tracktotrack.com

SPECIAL FEATURE preserved and rebuilt by Stud stalwart, Sally Carroll, when a housing estate was to be located over the great horse’s grave. Sally revealed that she was left to rebuild the bones herself, with no knowledge of anatomy or guidance from books, but the bones fitted like pieces of a jigsaw and her endeavours are now one of the highlights for visitors. The Stud itself is not only deep in the heart of Kildare’s finest thoroughbred breeding land, but sits on the site where war horses were bred for the Knights of Malta, back in the 1300s. This breeding tradition has been continued, with no less than seven Classic winners bred at the Stud between 1904 and 1914 alone, thanks largely to the astrological prowess of Hall-Walker. This has been acknowledged by a sculpture, unveiled in May by Queen Elizabeth, called ‘Sea Of Stars’, paying tribute to Hall-Walker, the astrological features of the stallion boxes and to the best horse ever bred at Tully – Sea The Stars. Currently the Stud stands Amadeaus Wolf and Jeremy, both vying for the First Season’s Sire Championship this season and each standing for a fee of n6,000 (A$8,000). At the same fee is the established and rising star of the top stallion ranks, Big Bad Bob, while Indian Haven (n3,000) and Art Connoisseur (n4,500) are proving popular with breeders. High hopes are held for Lord Shanakill (n7,500), but all will have to go a long way to compete with leading stallion Invincible Spirit, who stands for a fee of n60,000 (A$80,000). 42

SPECIAL FEATURE enabling the stallions to see – and be seen by – the stars. A fine horseman and still successfully competing in point-to-points into old age, Hall-Walker owned the 1896 Grand National winner The Soarer, whom he had bought for just 500gns (A$825) shortly before the race, and shrewdly bought the mare Black Cherry, a daughter of Bendigo and half-sister to Bay Ronald, who subsequently bred the winners of 41 races, including Blanche, the dam of Blandford. He bred Classic winners Cherry Lass, Witch Elm and Night Hawk, as well as Derby winner Minoru.

COLONEL HALL-WALKER Hailing from a wealthy Lancashire brewing family, William Hall-Walker, later Lord Wavertree (1856-1933), could safely be considered an eccentric and had a distinct inability to accept criticism (particularly of his horses), often resulting in the termination of contracts of his jockeys and trainers.

In 1916 Hall-Walker effectively gifted The Tully Stud (sold at the Government’s own valuation) to the British Nation, including the four stallions and 43 mares. He received his peerage in 1919 and was elected to the Jockey Club that same year. He is also credited with encouraging the Aga Khan III (grandfather of the present Aga Khan) to take up racing in Europe on a lavish scale, having been inspired by a visit to Tully in 1904, which, in a way, has created a legacy far greater than the INS alone.

He was a keen astrologer and greatly influenced by the stars, applying the horoscope to his breeding and racing policies. Whether successfully or not is in question – he bred the champion Prince Palatine, but sold him for a mere 2,000gns (A$3,300)! Hall-Walker purchased the Tully Stud in Kildare in 1900 and had skylights built into each of the stallion boxes,

HORSEMAN’S CORNER

Building a reliable business

A

M A Z I N G sometimes how things turn out …

Around 20 years ago, Dene Aitkenhead was asked to build a stable block for a family friend. Rather than taking the ‘friend in need, is a pest’ approach, Dene decided to have a crack. After all, being a builder by trade, he had owned timber and prefabricated housing businesses and, what’s more, his wife is a horse trainer.

Soon, orders came in so quickly that Dene closed down his business to concentrate on the growing demand for his stables and thus, The Horse Shed Shop was established in 1992. Dene quickly learned that industry demands were often ‘unique’ in nature and his new clients were firing questions at him from all angles: Can you make ‘chew-proof’ horse shelters? Do you know of any feed bins that won’t fall apart in a week? How can I best get a non-slip surface for my mare and foal?

A perfectionist at the best of times, Dene began researching, sourcing and even designing suitable products based on clients’ enquiries, with his wife and daughters often becoming test pilots, putting the research through its paces on their own racehorses and showjumpers. With the addition of Dene’s brother-in-law Charles Stenberg as partner in 2004, The Horse Shed Shop was able to expand, lining stables, floats and round yards with rubber products.

Sure enough, the end result exceeded the mate’s expectations and word of Dene’s outstanding craftsmanship, work ethic and ‘horse sense’ fuelled a flood of enquiries from the close knit horse community. One thing about equine folk … they all want quality ‘housing’ for their pride and joy.

'SHOP KEEPERS' : DENE AITKENHEAD (RIGHT) WITH CHARLES STENBERG

HORSEMAN’S CORNER

Stenberg was hardly a Charlescome-lately as he too has building industry experience and been around horses much of his life. Inside knowledge on all matters equine is a clear asset in this caper and allows The Horse Shed Shop team to provide products and concepts that deliver safety, functionality and affordability … across a wide range of needs. Basically, a “one stop shop” for time limited horse enthusiasts and professionals. “We are happy to research … recommend a good product,” Charles points out. “To help people find the right solution.

Indeed, The Horse Shed Shop recently announced its appointment as agents for Magnum Industries of New Zealand, who are recognised around the globe for their Horse and Aqua walkers: exporting to four continents. “They (Magnum Industries) have put a lot of thought into coming up with a reliable, functional and safe system that also looks so much better than the ‘Hills Hoist’ style of walker,” Charles adds. “I’ve had so many customers ask me about horse walkers, and having seen dozens I can confidently say that these walkers are streets ahead of others I’ve seen and

used ... I’m sure our customers will happy with this range.” The Horse Shed Shop now designs or sources, and erects horse products as diverse as stables, shelters, fencing, rubber, feed bins, round yards and walkers. Dene and Charles can even plan the layout of your horse property to provide the most functional, safe and impressive environment for your horses. For further information about the Equine Property Solutions offered, phone The Horse Shed Shop on 03 9005 8477 or visit the website at www. thehorseshedshop.com.au.

“And, if we come across something that we can stock, something which our clients will benefit from, we’ll add them to our offerings: providing it’s consistent with The Horse Shed Shop ethos.” The team at The Horse Shed Shop has often found research takes them beyond the local market: to interstate and internationally recognised horse property options. www.tracktotrack.com

OR SHOULD I GO?

The victory of So You Think in the Eclipse Stakes (2 July) was an historic one. Quite apart from the obvious, it marked a real watershed in the evolution of the Australasian thoroughbred. I say Australasian because, just as in the case of Phar Lap, So You Think is now Australian and the use of that application is understandable, given that he was developed by our greatest living trainer in Bart Cummings and did his racing in Australia before heading to Ballydoyle.

He was, however, bred in New Zealand and while I am not one for promoting provincial attitudes, it must be acknowledged where the horse came from. As usual, I digress. It’s very interesting to observe how many Australian racing commentators have taken a real interest in European racing recently which is excellent. That So You Think is now racing there has generated many column inches on racing which is what we desperately need >> www.tracktotrack.com

SPECIAL FEATURE in our newspapers. The tactics employed and race riding in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes generated more heat than light but that is fine: everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and I am sure that the Coolmore team will have taken an added sense of satisfaction out of the Eclipse win. On a personal note I was very pleased to see that So You Think raced without the crossover noseband he wore at his previous starts, but that is probably the observation of someone who needs to get out more. To my eyes there were two very relevant points out of the Eclipse win. One was that the real merit of the win is one to be underscored. Workforce is a Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner and by European standards, a horse of the highest class. The mile and a quarter at Sandown Park is a very stiff test and So You Think out-battled one of the current best. No matter that is was a small field … quality not quantity is what is relevant. The second point, and the one that is more important, is that So You Think has broken new ground in winning a middledistance race at the highest level. It says something that Australian sprinters are now regarded as the best in the world. All in the space of a decade thanks to Choisir, Miss Andretti, Takeover Target and Starspangledbanner. The one thing we in Australia and New Zealand needed to prove was that horses raised and sold here could be competitive at middledistances.

50

www.tracktotrack.com

Off the top of my head I can really only think of Balmerino and Strawberry Road who have won at the highest level in Europe but I will no doubt be corrected, and please do because we should glory in what we can achieve here. Our jumpers should not be forgotten either. Crisp and Playschool blazed a trail for others to follow and hopefully So You Think will do the same for some of our middledistance runners. Now we have the discussion of what would serve Australia best … So You Think returning for a third Cox Plate or remaining in Europe for a tilt at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, to my eyes the premier mile and a half race in the world. There is a school of thought that suggests So You Think has already won two Cox Plates, let him win an Arc and really cement his reputation in Europe. A part of me agrees with that but another part would love to see him come ‘home’ and win another Cox Plate and join Kingston Town as the only other horse to win Australia’s greatest middledistance weight-for-age race three times. The fact that the debate is taking place is one thing and it keeps racing in the news. Let’s hope that the bureaucratic machinations can sort the quarantine situation out and it leaves the Cox Plate option on the table. So, should he stay in Europe or go to Australia? It’s a nice quandary to find yourself in. Victory in either by So You Think will have Australian and New Zealand race fans rocking the kasbah.

CAPTAIN SONADOR

Bay, 2006 Shamardal (USA) – Pushing Daisies (Kenny’s Best Pal) Standing: Raheen Stud 2011 Fee: $11,000 (incl gst) Ph: 07 4666 1172 www.raheenstud.com.au Amongst the first sons of Shamardal to retire to stud in Australia, this South Australian bred Gr.1 winner proved quite a bargain for his owners – the $30,000 Magic Millions yearling purchase amassing just short of $730,000 in stakes. A multiple city winner at two and three, Captain Sonador really hit his straps as a spring four-yearold, quickly progressing through the grades and at only his third run that preparation taking out the Gr.1 Epsom Handicap. Freshened after that spring campaign, he won the Listed Goldmarket Handicap at the Gold Coast first up – retiring not long after with a tally of six wins and eight placings from 31 starts. Captain Sonador is one of his sire’s 28 stakes winners and four Gr.1 winners, two of which (the other being the Oaks filly Faint Perfume) are locals. A stallion faring very well in both hemispheres, he is sire in the north of elite level winners Lope

de Vega (standing at Patinack this spring) and Casamento. Captain Sonador is out of the dual city winning Kenny’s Best Pal mare Pushing Daisies, half sister to the dual Gr.2 winning mare Umaline, dam of the stakes winning juvenile Fasline. Further back this is also the family of the Gr.1 winners Woambra, Starjo, Calibrate, Bon Filou and Crush.

Last year’s Champion USA First Season Sire by both earnings and winners, his first crop was a revelation – one that yielded 15 stakes horses including two Gr.1 winners – Turbulent Descent and Wickedly Perfect. A descendant of the acclaimed matriarch La Troienne, Congrats is a son of the Mr Prospector mare Praise, daughter of the dual Group winning Northern Dancer mare Wild Applause and half sister to the Gr.1 Belmont Futurity winner Eastern Echo. Also a ¾ sister to the dual Group winner Roar and half to the Group winners Yell and Blare Of Trumpets, Praise can boast amongst her close relations the Kentucky Derby champ Sea Hero and fellow big race winners Hero’s Honor, Mozart and Lite Light. A champion sire of over 130 stakes winners, he is the sire of More Than Ready who has proven a great shuttling success story as the sire of 84 stakes winners. A Gr.1 winner in South America where he won half of his 12 starts, Snapy Halo made his way to Australia where the big mile handicaps were to be his aim. Unfortunately he didn’t quite make the transition although he showed glimpses of his best form when third in the Listed Doncaster Prelude and a close up sixth in Rangirangdoo’s Gr.1 Doncaster. Hailing from an outstanding South American family, Snapy Halo is a son of the Gr.3 winning mare Esnaola whose eight foals to race have all been winners including the triple Gr.1 winning filly Halo Ola and the Gr.1 colt Sebi Halo – both full siblings to Snapy Halo.

Raced by his breeders, the Moran family, and trained by John O’Shea, Tickets was an early maturing galloper who at his first start won the Listed Canonbury Stakes defeating future Gr.1 winners Manhattan Rain and Wanted. Two starts later winning the Gr.2 Darley Stakes, he was then second in two Gr.1 events, carrying on his excellent form at three by winning the Listed Doncaster Stakes at Flemington and later the Gr.2 Phar Lap Stakes before retiring to stud as the winner of four races and over $575,000. A regally bred son of champion stallion Redoute’s Choice, Tickets is out of the wonderful mare Staging – racetrack millionaire who won a total of ten races, six of those at Group level. Staging has proven an excellent broodmare, the dam of dam of five winners from as many to race. And a high quality group of winners

This lightly raced horse, a $900,000 Easter yearling whose career was thwarted by joint injury, joins the roster at Victoria’s Hollylodge this spring. Debuting at three in the early months of last year, Widden Valley didn’t take long to break his maiden, successful in fast time at just his second start at Wyong. Subsequently fourth in town with another Wyong victory following, he was sadly only able to race on one more occasion – a game third in the Scone Guineas behind Star Of Octagonal. Widden Valley’s sire Anabaa was an outstanding stallion success, the dual Gr.1 winning sprinting son of the Gr.1 mare Balbonella siring 81 stakes winners including super mare Goldikova and local (southern hemisphere) big race winners Yell, Virage de Fortune,

Anabandana,Anacheeva, Headturner, Imananabaa and Teranaba. Widden Valley is the son of a terrific race mare, the AJC Oaks heroine Rose Archway who sadly died too young last year. A descendant of the famed matriarch Chelandry, she was one of eight winners produced by her dam, the stakes placed dual Sydney city winning Zamazaan mare Nazaan – half sister to the dual Listed winning juvenile Northcote Express.

BURWOOD STUD

MASKED ASSASSIN

Sky Channel’s OLI BELL profiles one of Queensland’s leading thoroughbred nurseries: Burwood Stud.

T

H E R E I S A LWAYS a rather comforting feel ab out family run businesses. And Burwood Stud cert ainly has the homely feel that puts c lients at ease. Purchased in 1978 by Noel and Christine Denning, it has always been a family owned and operated business and it should not go unnoticed that Burwood Stud is one of only a handful of studs that cater for the Harness and Thoroughbred racing industries. The ‘dual purpose’ capabilites of Burwood were always a key part of the Denning mission, when, in the late 70s a lifelong dream to run a stud farm became a reality.

56

www.tracktotrack.com

As you drive up to Burwood Stud, even before you have met the whole Denning family – grandchildren and all – you would instantly feel a sense of calm. Located 48km from Toowoomba on 1200 acres of fertile, basalt and limestone country there is a postcard feel to the surroundings of Burwood. Another advantage is the balance between the tranquil setting and the accessibility to a conglomerate of Queensland’s largest harness and thoroughbred studs. Noel has always had a passion for horses and was entrusted with the job of breaking young pacers in for harness legend, Kevin Seymour, in the early days of his career. With

FARM WATCH

It is fairly important when involved in racing, be it as a big time player or a ‘fan’, to remind yourself that you don’t need progeny of Galileo or High Chaparral to have Group One winners. Although given their recent record as stallions, it would certainly help, but the point is that you can have success at affordable prices and this is evidenced by Burwood’s stallion roster. In the thoroughbred category you can take your pick from three profitable former racehorses all standing for under $6,000. Collate, a talented Sydney based sprinter who amassed over $300,000 in stakes is the most expensive at $5,500 dollars and then there is Marked Assassin, out of the multiple black typewinning mare Duk Duk. A 2004 foaled multiple groupwinning grandson of Danehill, a bloodline that has proven time and time again to provide returns, Marked Assasin stands for $4,950. Finally, there is Dusty Moon, the cheapest of the triumverate at $2,200 dollars. Dusty Moon is a city winning son of Zabeel’s ill fated stallion Moon Rocket. The standardbred stallion roster has some famous names: Mr Aviator, Ultimate Falcon, and the marquee, Western Edition, who is the costliest at $2,000. This fact is unsurprising when you look at Western Edition’s profile. A 1:51:6 pacer at three, by champion stallion Western Hanover out of champion broodmare Perfect Profile … it’s not hard to see why Western Edition is in demand.

According to Christine, one of the Dennings proudest achievements is the rapidly rising career of Western Mail (by Western Edition) who is “absolutely flying at the moment”. Also on the roster is Cammibest whose star progeny Cha Ching Chaching is tearing up the 2YO scene, recently winning a valuable purse at Albion Park. It would appear that Cha Ching Chaching’s future looks rosey and according to Christine “is going to be good, very good”. Meanwhile, Cammibest stands at $1,200. Despite the success of Western Mail and Cha Ching Chaching there is a certain feeling of the small fish in the big pond with regards to Burwood Stud and it should never be taken for granted just how hard it is to compete with the ‘powerhouse’ studs. The best thing about it all is that, like with most people in

laugh like only families can and look out of the window at the greenery that surrounds the family home, it is right to assume that when Noel and Christine took the punt on an old farm a few decades ago, this is exactly the reason why. When asked about the future, Christine was adamant that as long as the family were involved then she and Noel would be happy. Their two children are an integral part of the day to day running of the
