I don’t think you’ll find that they will be reduced to the levels that some industry commentators are advocating. I believe that rather than fees taking a downward hike as a kneejerk reaction to yearling sale prices, ‘discounts’ will be driven by some pretty fierce competition for a fast dwindling availability of dollars. Your best bet is to look for some of the deals being offered: after all, a $5,000 drop in a service fee, for instance, sounds good on paper, but when it’s weighed up over the 27 months or so before you get your planned mating to a yearling sale, it bears little relevance. I suggest broodmare owners look closely at some of terms and ‘packages’ being offered as they may well be more beneficial in the long run. In closing, I hope you’ll take time to read through our bushfire coverage commencing on page 52. The process of re-building will be long and arduous and those affected will need our long term support. Good luck to all and have a safe (and hopefully prosperous) Easter. Best wishes, Penny Verco Publisher

MELITO When you’re wrong, you’re wrong … I was told early in life (1) not to run up stairs or (2) back odds on, but most importantly to (3) never assume. Researching the name, Melito, I was guilty of flaunting rule three and would almost surely have broken rule two if given the opportunity. As we’ve stated earlier, Melito is out of the mare Cloister which, according to Wikipedia, “Cloistered life is another name for the life of a monk or nun in the enclosed religious orders”.

www.tracktotrack.com

A click away and we find that Saint Melito of Sardis was a famous monk from the second century and, all of a sudden, it’s ‘elementary my dear Watson’. Sadly … no. According to Reavill Farm (and they’d know given that they own the filly), Melito is named after one of the wives of Greek playwright Euripides. Can’t say he’s favourite bedtime reading, but I’m tipping old Euripides was a punter given that he’s famous for his ‘tragedies’. Not sure what he would have quilled about More Joyous, but surely it’s safe to assume that he’d be getting on Melito in the Slipper!

elito has some big shoes to fill – well, ‘slippers’ actually.

The winner of this year’s STC Franklins Supermarkets Silver Slipper Stakes-G2 – after a drama charged opening stanza – Melito is aiming to become the first 2YO to capture both the Silver and Golden Slippers since Luskin Star in 1977. Trainer Gerald Ryan obviously believes she is capable, nominating Melito “the best 2YO I’ve trained”, while pilot Danny Nikolic isn’t in any hurry to jump off either.

wayward trip: “She (Melito) has been a great filly to train and does everything right so she can only go ahead.” Nikolic wasn’t mincing words either, claiming he knew Melito was something out of the box when he rode her to a six length trial win at Rosehill at the start of February: “I thought there and then she was my (Golden) Slipper ride.” Having her first start in the AJC Widden Stakes-LR over 1100m at Randwick on 14 February, Melito was a little out of sorts on the slow surface and failed by a length, running second to Horizons.

of the race, has subsequently produced two winners of the world’s richest juvenile event – Miss Finland and Stratum – while his other Group One winning 2YOs are Samantha Miss, Nadeem, Undoubtedly and Fashions Afield. A truly remarkable son of Danehill, Redoute’s Choice’s mantelpiece includes two championships, while progeny earnings are now in excess of $45 million. Unquestionably the sire of the decade. As would befit a trip to the breeding shed king, Melito’s dam – Cloister – has quite a bit of ‘purple’ about her pedigree too.

Melito might have a fair way to go before being mentioned in the same breath as Luskin Star, but there’s little doubt she’s a star in the making.

Melito was certainly impressive in her tilt at the silver ware. Jumping well at Rosehill, Melito quickly settled just off the leader, but opened a winning break on turning for home to score by two lengths.

Tellingly, Nikolic didn’t use up much petrol getting the filly to the line. Unfortunately, the command performance was marred by the buckjumping display of hot pot favourite, More Joyous, who gave her owners and trainer anything but joy after racing erratically for the first 20 seconds before being pulled up. A slipped girth strap appears to have been the culprit. But while punters licked their wounds, Ryan was adamant his filly would still have won and given More Joyous a “short back and sides” in the process – regardless of her rivals

But it was nothing but silver lining at the ‘hill two weeks later: “Going back on top of the ground was a big factor today. She did a few little things wrong inside the furlong when she wanted to lug out quite badly but she will be a lot better when she’s got something to chase,” Nikolic proffered post race, adding ominously: “She’s a real class act and will only improve next time in.”

Winner of the MRC Debutante Stakes-LR at two, Cloister was also placed in the AJC Gimcrack Stakes-LR and, ironically, is a three quarter sister to Unison, who managed to snag her attempt at the Widden Stakes-

>>

Melito’s victory proved to a milestone for her sire, Redoute’s Choice, who has now produced 50 individual stakeswinners, 14 at Group One level. Will Melito become No. 15? Redoute’s Choice, albeit denied his chance at Slipper glory after falling sick on the morning

LR. A half sister in Summary is the dam of Champion Filly, Shikoba, a three time Group Two winner in New Zealand. It’s Cloister’s grandam, Summoned, though that really sets any breeder’s pulse racing. Summoned was truly one of the greats of the Australian Stud Book, producing 13 winners from 16 foals to race – five of them at stakes level. And not just your garden variety stakeswinners either. Multiple Group One winner and successful sire, Zeditave, multiple stakeswinner and sire Alannon, Group winners Square Deal and Zedagal, plus Cloister’s Group winning mum, Pampas Fire. Cloister, is no slouch in the breeding barn either and, prior to Melito’s ‘arrival’ had produced three winners from three to race, including the stakesplaced juvenile Sister Declan. Owned by Reavill Farm, the mare dropped a Hussonet filly last November and was covered by Encosta de Lago a week before Christmas. Cloister’s Stratum filly, a three quarter to Melito, was snapped up for only $80,000 by leading trainer Michael Moroney on the Gold Coast in January, which just might prove to be one of the all-time great bargains, in light of Melito’s subsequent performance.

Melito herself was a graduate of the Gold Coast Magic Millions, knocked down to Gerald Ryan for $600,000 after a spirited bidding duel. Ryan was bidding boldly based on a, supposedly, fully subscribed to syndication, but when talk turned to walk, the Rosehill trainer was left holding the baby … so to speak. Fortunately for him and not so fortunate for the ‘drop outs’, Reavill Farm took up the slack, deciding to try and sell the filly at last October’s Horses in Training sale on the Coast. A minor setback saw the filly withdrawn from the HIT, but Reavill persisted and continued to try and off load the filly privately. Reavill Farm takes up the story: “Melito had many admirers but none had committed by the time John (Rippon) saw Gerald at the 2009 Magic Millions who reported ‘that filly goes pretty good, runs some smart times’. “Her trial debut made it abundantly clear that four legs were indeed better than one.” Here, here! Melito might have a fair way to go before being mentioned in the same breath as Luskin Star, but there’s little doubt she’s a star in the making.

EASTER

W

E L L , WE’VE seen the rest – now it’s time

Every year we dig deep into Rogets for more and more superlatives to pump the grandeur that is Easter.

Yes, the sale will take a hit in 2009. Let’s face it, Easter is famous for resurrections, but even the Inglis CEO, Mark Webster, has flagged a fall, stating that “yearling prices will be affected” and it will be a “buyers market”.

And, after 20 or so years of previewing the greatest show on turf, you begin to realise there are only so many ways of saying incomparable.

So, get used to the fact that for the first time in a coon’s age you won’t see headlines about record breaking averages at Newmarket.

for the best.

12

The Australian Easter Yearling Sale is, simply, No. 1.

www.tracktotrack.com

But that doesn’t alter the indelible impression Easter continues to leave on the thoroughbred landscape and will surely do again this time around. Whether its tradition, marketing or both, the formula is simple. Vendors send their best yearlings and the well-heeled come shopping. One thing is for certain … cashed up or not, they’ll have plenty to drool over if what you see on the catalogue page transforms into flesh and blood athleticism.

STILL THE ONE samantha miss

racing to win

After all, when you have a 500 pager featuring 181 stakeswinning mares (50 of those at Group One level) and 157 siblings to stakeswinners (53 Group One), you can live with an offset knee or two. But it’s more than ‘relationships’. A sobering reminder of the largesse of boom times is the sale’s lineup of Redoute’s Choice and Encosta de Lago yearlings. For instance, in the year this lot of lots were conceived, Redoute’s

Choice stood at $275,000 (now $330,000) and Encosta de Lago at $176,000 (now $302,500), the highest priced stallions in the land. Inglis’ will offer 75 Redoute’s Choice youngsters at Easter and 71 Encosta de Lagos. Flying Spur, who split the two with a Sires’ Premiership in 06/07, has 53. Between the trio, a massive 37.8% of the first session alone. Ironically, the most talked about and probably the most widely inspected entry won’t

be a Redoute’s, an Encosta or a Flying Spur. Lot 90, which is due to sell around 3 to 4pm on the Sunday is, in fact, a bay colt by Galileo who, admittedly, has sold a six figure type at Easter, but nothing compared to the 39 million plus youngsters knocked down in the name of Redoute’s Choice. That said buyers haven’t had the opportunity to choose a Choice out of a turf legend called Makybe Diva.

>>

www.tracktotrack.com

13

u s t r a l i a n yearling 09 aeaster sale preview

Yep, it only seems like yesterday that Makybe Diva was winning her third successive Melbourne Cup and now, in a matter of a couple of weeks, we’re about to get up close and personal with her first born. What’s he like on type? I guess we’ll know the true answer to that just before Lot 91 enters the ring … economic downturn or not. But just in case you don’t win Lotto before 5 April, division two will at least get you access to bid on the progeny of Hasna, Hollow Bullet, Magic Miss, Miss Pennymoney, Miss Potential, Our Egyptian Raine, Private Steer, Regimental Gal, Shamekha, Special Harmony and Carry on Cutie. There are also halfs, three quarters, full and in bloods to Group One winners the like of Gold Edition, Dance Hero, Silent Witness, Eremein, Samantha Miss, Alinghi, Rebel Raider, Magnus, Takeover Target, Sunline, Mentality, Virage de Fortune and Stratum. There has be some irony in Shady Stream having her

Dubawi colt at Easter. The last time one of her sons went through the Newmarket ring, he was knocked down to a cab driver for $1,250. Six years later, Shady’s boy has been a money stream winning $5.5 million and international notoriety as Takeover Target. Again, we can’t be sure short of an inspection, but we’ll boldly predict the Dubawi colt will be sold for more than what Takeover Target reaped Meringo Stud at the 2003 July Winter Sale. Dubawi is one of 10 first season sires whom have progeny up for grabs at Easter (compared to the 22 stallions with initial offerings on the Gold Coast), while Starcraft leads the way with 24 first croppers. Golden Slipper Stratum, who has sold well from the Gold Coast to Adelaide, has 15 entered, followed by Snitzel with 10 and God’s Own with an even half doz. The weak Australian dollar should see an influx of international visitors vying

for the crème de la crème, but they might not have it all their own way if lack of activity by locals at other sales around Australasia has left something in the domestic kitty. The job of attracting buyers to Easter is made easier every year for Inglis’ marketing crew particularly when recent graduates include multiple Group One winners Samantha Miss and Forensics, Shinzig, Juste Momente, Sousa, Reaan and, for the Asian ‘audience’, Hong Kong International Sprint-G1 winner Inspiration. It seems the toughest job for Inglis’ is not scaring off potential players by ‘spinning’ a Samantha Miss to those who can’t ante up $1.5 million. Hence, Team Inglis is equally quick to point out that Maldivian only cost $195,000 at Easter, Rosehill Guineas-G1 winner Dealer Principal was sold for $150,000, as was Metrop winner Newport. George Main victor, Mentality returned some 20 times his asking price of $100,000 and lo and behold, multiple Group One winner Racing To Win was one of >>

Dubai, England, South Africa, Singapore and Hong Kong”.

As if that isn’t enough, Inglis hastens to add that the auction house duopoly is fairly onesided with its affairs producing nine times more Group winning 2YOs and twice as many Group One winners than any other sales company in Australia since 2005/06, while graduates have attained Champion 3YO status every season since 2002/03.

How good is that Aussie dollar looking now?

Furthermore, in 2008 there were 24 Group One winners of 32 races in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and Hong Kong originating from Inglis sales, while it’s the “only Australian sales source of Group One winners in each of Japan,

Inglis CEO, Mark Webster, probably sums it up best by stating: “Easter will once again prove the benchmark sale of Australasian bloodstock”. ‘Benchmark’ is an interesting word. Merriam-Webster describes it as “something that serves as a standard by which others may be measured or judged”. Let’s hope that for the breeders who have made it to Mecca that Easter ’09 will measure and judge them kindly.

The Australian Easter Yearling Sale Session I commences on Sunday 5 April at 1pm (Lots 1-180), followed by an 11am start on Monday (Lots 181390) and an 11am kickoff on Tuesday (Lots 391-500) prior to the 100strong Session II (Lots 501-600).

DECANTER

Eight sons of Hussonet stood in Australia last spring and Kedarona Stud at Catani is proud to present the well credentialled Decanter. “I was notified mid last year that Decanter was available” said the stud’s Narelle Bravington, “and I got that ‘must have’ feeling!”

and Tycoon Lil as well as the champion broodmare Shantha’s Choice) Hussonet is a high class stallion who continues to maintain an impressive strike rate. After writing himself into the record books in South America, Hussonet arrived in Australia in 2003, Arrowfield his home. Weekend Hussler emerged from his first local crop and he has also been represented by the stakes winners Reaan (Blue Diamond

Unfortunately Decanter’s arrival was delayed by quarantine complications, the handsome chestnut not arriving at the farm until late September – his book thus restricted. He did however still serve some very nice mares including Countess Kerry (daughter of a half sister to Fields Of Omagh), Mersenne (half sister to the Queensland Oaks winner Booked), Molly’s Folly (multiple city winning Encosta de Lago mare), Royal Cheron (daughter of the SA Oaks winner Cherontessa), Urakawa (half sister to the Gr.1 sprinter/ miler Rustic Dream) … as well as mares by Umatilla, Canny Lad, Dehere and Rancho Ruler. And the early signs for the 2009 spring are promising (early bird offers available) – “ there is a nice flow of early interest,” said

Bravington who noted that at an open day last October, Decanter impressed all who saw him. “He was very well received,” she said, adding that “he has let down beautifully since his arrival and has settled extremely well into his new surroundings and his Aussie way of life.” Lightly raced due to injury, Decanter was a sprinter of above average ability – the winner of three of six. “On his DVD,” Bravington explains, “you can see how exciting his wins were – it was a shame that injury cut his career short.” Decanter is one of five winners (from as many to race) produced by his dam, the Listed winning Colonna Traiana. Her son Host, a full brother to Decanter, was one of Hussonet’s best – the winner of 10 races and successful at Gr.1 level in Chile (Dos Mil Guineas by over six lengths) and America (Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland). Standing at Swettenham last spring, Host served 119 mares at a fee of just under $20,000 which, says Bravington, makes his little brother at $7,700 “value for money.” Hailing from an outstanding South American family – his grandam the Gr.2 winner Propinada, Decanter is bred on a 2 X 4 cross of the legendary Mr Prospector. He also carries several strains of that stallion’s female line –Tourbillon, Djeddah and Mr Brick. Keep that in mind when looking for a mare for him – descendants of Seattle Slew (another member of this Frizette clan) of particular interest; noting that Weekend Hussler is one example of the Hussonet/Seattle Slew cross.

top me if you’ve already heard it … Johnny has to tell the rest of the class what his father does for a living. He gets up and explains to a rather bemused audience that his dad is an exotic dancer in a gay night club and supplements his income by providing sexual favours. After class, the astonished teacher asks Johnny if what he 22

said was true: “No, he’s actually a bloodstock agent but I was too embarrassed to tell anyone.” Bloodstock agents often get a bad rap. As far as professions go, they’re right up there (or down there) with used car salesmen and, heaven forbid, racing journalists. Slow horses will just about raise anyone’s ire and, more often than not, the ire is directed at

the person who advised them to buy that weak-gutted nag who can’t run out of sight on a dark night. The truth of it is though, bloodstock agents – no matter how experienced or talented – are mostly dealing with a blank canvas. Unlike a car salesman who has a fair idea that the lemon they sold will at least get the buyer to the

next suburb before the wheels fall off, bloodstock agents don’t have that luxury. All they can do is summon up years of experience – in some cases, literally thousands of kilometers walking around sale yards or farms – and studying pedigrees and commercial trends. They can inspect every inch of the horse, watch closely for any

perceived fault. Some agents have their idiosyncrasies, their own special means of checking the merits of conformation: there’s things they forgive, others they condemn. Turned out or turned in? Hey, you say tomay-to, I say tomar-to. The one thing they can’t do though, regardless of expertise or ‘eye’, is see what makes

a horse tick. The ability to determine just what it is inside that colt or filly which will be all the difference between making a thud or being a dud. And that, folks, is what makes this caper great – the thing that keeps the playing field level. That said, bloodstock agents have, and will continue to provide the soundest information at their disposal.

under the microscope Nine times out of 10 they will pick up something you miss and for newcomers who eschew sage advice, you’re asking for a world of trouble. Even owners who have been in the game since Bart Cummings was in short pants seek out their agents’ opinion. So, where do you find one and whom do you choose? Who’s reputable and who’s a ripoff ? Why a bloodstock agent and why not a trainer? What services are provided? Track To Track asked from the Federation of Bloodstock Agents to fill in the blanks.

“Members must have a minimum of five years professional involvement in the agency field and have operated their own bloodstock agency for at least two years. “As it stands now, the present members have – on average – been working in the bloodstock agency field for 23 years.

of maintaining your interest for another few minutes, we’ll refrain from listing them individually. However, words such as loyalty, probity, professionalism, spirit, obligation and fidelity are sprinkled liberally throughout, but it’s a code taken very seriously and woe betide the agent who steps out of line. “There is a stigma attached to certain bloodstock agents, either real or i m a g i n e d ,” L o u i s continues. “That’s why the Federation was formed in 1988 to provide the public with a level of comfort that they are dealing with Agents who meet minimum standards of experience, integrity and accountability.

“Sure, there are unscrupulous dealers in any field but it’s in no-one’s interests to scam new investors. It’s such a thrilling industry to be involved with and people who have a bit of success tend to bring a lot of their friends into the industry as well. It’s better for all. Federation Members have now proven that for 31 years. “People need to know though that despite best intentions, none of us are infallible. Sure, we can check out the chassis but can’t lift the hood!” Why would I go to an agent and not, say, a trainer? “Independence. If a trainer inspects a horse on your behalf there’s a fair and reasonable assumption that he will train the horse for you. Member bloodstock agents on the other hand can provide advice independent of a trainer and may even be able to point you in the direction of a trainer 26

www.tracktotrack.com

who can best exploit a horse’s perceived strengths (eg, sprinter or stayer). Some trainers actually use Bloodstock Agents to do the leg-work for them at yearling sales and advise them as to the best horses to buy!” And is buying and selling the be all and end all for an agent? “Absolutely not. On behalf of clients we can purchase stallion shares and nominations, recommend matings, place insurance – not only to secure a competitive rate but to ensure the policy meets the needs of the client, plus value bloodstock for purchase, dissolution of a partnership or for the purposes of insurance. “We can also assist with stud book documentation, racehorse registration, transport and financial management of bloodstock.” OK, we’ve gone this far, so who do you choose?

Louis nearly deflects that curly one and suggests you check out the member details on the website: www.bloodstockagents.com.au “Each member has a range of attributes and areas which they specialise in and you need to find out who you’re comfortable with.” Louis, trading as Laurel Oak Bloodstock Pty Ltd, has a pretty good track record of his own, having purchased Group One winners and planned the matings of several others. Many other Members of the Federation have also achieved similar success. “I love this industry. I find the greatest reward is the smile on the face of an owner who has just won a race whether it’s at Randwick or Balranald. “It’s magic.”

Yearlings enjoying the pastures

There has never been a time, since the Kruger family took over Lyndhurst Stud from the McDougall family in 1956, that a leading sire has not called the Warwick property home. 28

www.tracktotrack.com

I

n fact, on 25 different occasions in the last 38 years, a Lyndhurst stallion has topped the Australian Sires List in respect of wins. Five different stallions have been crowned the champion sire by individual winners and wins. No mean feat!

Founded in 1857 by the Gore family, Lyndhurst was sold to Mr. C.E. McDougall in 1886. He commenced his thoroughbred breeding operation with a number of well bred mares and his newly purchased sire Archie. Over the next 70 years, stallions of the calibre of Ladurland, Syce, Seremond and The Buzzard stood with distinction at Lyndhurst. The Buzzard’s achievements warrant special mention… the sire of 45 stakes winners, he was well represented by the Melbourne Cup winners Old Rowley and Rainbird, the Caulfield Cup winners Buzalong and Basha Felika and the AJC Derby hero Playboy. To this day C.E. McDougall’s contribution to Queensland racing is acknowledged each year when the McDougall Stakes is run as the first Brisbane two-year-old fillies race of the season. In 1956 Lyndhurst changed hands, purchased by brothers Percy and Ted Kruger and remaining in

Top of the Sires the family ever since. Foundation stallion for the new ownership was the imported Smokey Eyes, son of Star Kingdom’s sire Stardust and almost ten years the leading sire of winners in Australia. Amongst Smokey Eye’s tallies was New Statesman who boasts the distinction of having won a VRC Derby and an Oakleigh Plate – and the famed filly Eyeliner after whom an Ipswich Listed race is named. Raced by the Kruger brothers, Eye Liner at two won eight consecutive races by margins of between six and ten lengths. In Sydney she proved too strong in the Champagne Stakes bettering a track record held by

the champion Todman. All up winning 14 races and earning the title of Queensland Horse Of The Year, she fared just as well at stud – nine of her ten foals by five different Lyndhurst stallions being winners including the stakes winners Pacific Ruler and Pacific Prince. Since Smokey Eyes, many top stallions have stood at Lyndhurst Stud – the likes of Grand Chaudiere, Non Proven, Tudor Monarch, Head Over Heels, Hail to Success (who set a two-yearold winners record in his first season), Grey Seas and Lysander II all making their mark. Grand Chaudiere is a part of breeding history – being the

very first son of Northern Dancer to stand in Australia. It was considerable foresight shown by the Krugers as that legendary stallion had not yet made his name. The 1980/81 leading sire of winners, Grand Chaudiere sired 455 individual winners and he has proven influential as a broodmare sire – especially via the deeds of Easy Date, dam of Snippets. Another Lyndhurst stallion of considerable note is Celestial Dancer who died two years ago having served Queensland racing well over 21 seasons. As the sire of the winners of 239 races in the 1995/96 racing

season, Celestial Dancer set a world record for the most number of wins in a year, far outstripping the previous record set by none other than Smokey Eyes. He followed up the following season with the winners of 234 races and a Queensland prize money record of over $2.2 million. The next racing year he was one of only two Australia stallions to sire over 100 individual winners, the other being Danehill.

wheat and maize. Seventy boxes ensure there is plenty of room to prepare yearlings for sales around the country and there is an airstrip allowing potential buyers or existing clients to fly in to inspect the horses. A foster mare service is offered as well as 24 hour foal watch. Dedicated and professional, the team at Lyndhurst is overseen by Jeff & Griffith Kruger with their parents Merrell & Esdene. Whilst Jeff oversees client liaisons, adver tising and the farming side, Griffith is hands on with the horses – also playing a pivotal role in broodmare selection and the planning of matings.

Lyndhurst was the first Australian stud to bloodtype foals for parentage validation prior to the practice being compulsory by the Australian Stud Book.

Another milestone was reached in 2000 with Celestial Dancer becoming the first Australian stallion to sire more than 500 individual winners, the previous record of 475 set by Smokey Eyes. And his tally just keeps increasing – currently sitting on an amazing 705 winners with

Boasting Condamine River frontage and able to utilize its own bore and harvested water supplies in conjunction with an arrangement from the Warwick Shire Council, Lyndhurst Stud has been made as drought proof as possible. The irrigation allows the stud to crop its own lucerne, barley,

“In recent years we have been purchasing better credentialled mares and sending these mares to the Hunter Valley,” said Jeff

who is justifiably proud of Lyndhurst’s history. “The stud has been a leader in the Australian thoroughbred industry for many years,” he said – pointing out that Lyndhurst was the first Australian stud to bloodtype foals for parentage validation prior to the practice being compulsory by the Australian Stud Book. Lyndhurst was also the first Australian stud to install closed circuit cameras in foaling yards whist Merrell was part of a group of Queensland breeders to purchase the current Magic Millions site. Innovation aplenty! Lyndhurst Stud is currently home to four well credentialled stallions. Retired in 1997 as a six times stakes winner, the high class sprinter Sequalo is one of Australia’s most reliable stallions – the sire of 356 individual winners including ten stakes winners. Represented by his first yearlings this season is the exciting Hidden Dragon, a handsome son of Danehill and the outstanding mare Ballroom Babe. One of Hong Kong’s finest sprinters, he has proven extremely popular at Lyndhurst – in his first three years serving 429 mares.

Lyndhurst Stud are looking forward to selling members of Hidden Dragon’s debut crop at the upcoming QTIS sale. As a terrific bonus, buyers go into the draw to win an Ambassador Travel trip for two to the Hong Kong International race meeting in December! Highlight Lots at the QTIS 600 sale 29th-30th March inc::

A quiet achiever has been Carry The Flag, a Gr.1 winner in Singapore and the sire of 15 winners from only a small group of runners. Hayil too has done an excellent job, the Middle Park StakesGr.1 winner a consistent source of winners for the Danzig line. And so the future of Lyndhurst is in good hands. owner outline eequissage q ui s sage

In an industry where superlatives fly quicker than confetti in a hurricane, there is one bloke who wears the ‘legend’ tag with considerable justification.

I

n fact, Jack Styring is an institution: a nostalgic link to fast fading breed. And it’s not due solely to longevity, although a six decade stint in the thoroughbred cauldron is hardly to be sniffed at.

Nor is it singularly warranted for attaining Guiness Book of Records status in 2001 as the longest serving racecaller with 50 consecutive Gunbower Cups under his belt. And he’s still calling ‘em every year. No, it’s because Jack epitomises everything that we love – and hate – about racing and breeding. Whether it’s his sheer verve behind the microphone to an audience of thousands, or simply a fireside chat to a crowd of one, Jack’s passion never waivers. Equally so, he doesn’t mind ruffling a few feathers if warranted … regardless of the rooster. Yet even those on the end of a serve can’t fault his zest for a sport that called for his calling from a very early age. Born in Melbourne in 1929, Jack recalls his father taking him to the 1935 Melbourne Cup won by Marabou. Pretty soon young Jack was cutting out photos of horses and gluing them to wooden blocks, moving them around the backyard, calling the ‘race’ as he went (yes children, that’s what some people did before PlayStation). The die was cast. Upon leaving school, Jack hunted around to get a job in racing, but kicked off as a clerk before eventually getting a part time gig calling the dish lickers at Napier Park. He was just 17. This was also the era of Bernborough and, some 63 years on,

equissage owner outline have been treated, at different times, to Jack’s famous ‘pearls’. It’s fair to say that – on more than the odd occasion – Jack’s colourful calls have been a darn sight more entertaining than the actual race. Calling a four horse event early in his career, Jack started taking liberties with the jargon to brighten up proceedings and found that, post-race, the crowd has responded well to his daring commentary style. After all, who of us have taken a picnic to Hanging Rock on New Year’s Day could ever forget Jack’s delivery of gems such “charging along with his molars bared to the breeze” or “galloping with its mouth wide open like a codfish calling to its young”. sir tristram

Melbourne) before accepting a request to take on the 1951 Gunbower Cup.

A few years later, Jack was invited to call the trots at Echuca – on the Murray River – a pay off for his decision to write to every race and harness club in Victoria seeking a guernsey.

History was about to be made, but Jack didn’t know it at the time. He had unhesitatingly told the Gunbower secretary, Jack Brereton, that calling the township’s flagship event would be a pleasure, not knowing at the time where Gunbower actually was.

Jack would later tell interviewer, Graeme Kelly, that he’d travelled to Echuca expecting that there would be four or five entered for each event, but got the shock of his life when there were 28 acceptors in the first race. He must have done OK because Jack was asked to call his first thoroughbred meeting at Kaniva in 1950 (around 400 clicks north west of 34

At the time Jack could hardly be blamed for his ignorance of all things Gunbower. Admittedly the local post office opened in 1876, but according to the 2006 census, only 269 people reside in Gunbower. Still, the flocks of racegoers that descend upon Gunbower’s racetrack every year would all

Then of course there’s “They’re off … like a bag of crabs left in the sun” and “coming all over them like a bout of measles” or the “pace is so slow you could keep up with them on a bicycle with a punctured tyre”. As for a personal favourite? “They’ve having trouble getting them all in … it’s like squeezing toothpaste back into the tube”. Sadly, time waits for no man and Jack has now scaled back the majority of broadcasting commitments … and the world of racing is a little less for it. Surprisingly, Jack was never a regular caller in the city but did grow up in the era of the late, great Bert Bryant and shared a pew with the doyen at 3UZ for a time. It’s hard to conceive in a time of 24/7 racing channels that the

likes of Bryant, Styring and their ilk were once our eyes and ears on race day and the accuracy of their calls was paramount. Jack did manage to call eight or nine Melbourne Cups though after establishing his own recording company in the mid 50s. But while Jack Styring won notoriety through racing media outlets, he’s equally sure footed in the world of breeding and, indeed, once established and ran a stud farm (Beverley Park

As Jack said in a recent interview: “It (owning a stud farm) was a pressure business which needed a lot of money to keep it going. The stud game has become even more competitive of the years since so, while it was quite an e x p e r i e n c e, I’m not sorry that I got out when I did”.

After all, who of us have taken a picnic to Hanging Rock on New Year’s Day could never forget Jack’s delivery of gems such charging along with his molars bared to the breeze or galloping with its mouth wide open like a codfish calling to its young .

“ “

Jack would be quick to tell you that his greatest achievement is marrying the delightful Dolores, his wife of 32 years, but he’s also extremely proud of being awarded the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1994 for services to the industry. There is a diverse range of tomes that despite their length and breadth, Jack seems to be able to put his hand on the right page before you can say Google. There’s something to be said for the ‘old’ ways, particularly when they’re said with an enthusiasm for life that belies Jack’s newly acquired octogenarian status. TOUGH WEEK

Eagle Image - Dave Goudie

AT OAKLANDS

The Redoute’s Choice colt sold to Bill Benson’s Emerald Thoroughbreds for $365,000.

P

eter Heagney probably summed it up best.

Commenting at the shag end of 716 lots and four, often gruelling sessions that was the 2009 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, the Inglis Director said: “We had an excellent buying bench assembled here at Oaklands throughout the sale, but after vendors had enjoyed unprecedented growth in recent times, the market has now turned around to be in the buyers’ favour.” 40

www.tracktotrack.com

Ain’t that the truth! It was certainly a tough week at the office for those standing behind the rostrum or mucking out boxes. But Inglis’ certainly did their job. There were times, admittedly, when you could have let a shotgun off in the auditorium and not hit anyone, but on occasions, the bums on seats belonged to the likes of Gai Waterhouse (on site for most of the week), Lee Freedman, Paul Perry, representatives of Patinack Farm and the Hong Kong Jockey

Club, plus buyers from South Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, Ireland and Japan. You can’t ask for much more … well, you can actually, but until the global market rights itself, you’re not likely to get your prayers answered. On the face of it, a 42% drop in gross and 34% average deficit is not something to write home to mum about (unless of course you’re asking her for a loan). But given the record highs of the 2008 Melbourne Premier

australian sales

and subsequent downturn of every sale conducted thus far in ’09, the figures are not as bad as they look. Take the Liston family’s Three Bridges for instance who prep their yearlings better than most and are judicious with sale selection. Last year they topped the sale with a $750,000 Exceed and Excel, but if you remove that yearling from the equation, the farm still weighed in with a healthy $99,625 average. This time Three Bridges averaged $96,364.

PREMIUM JOINT SUPPLEMENT

Ultra Thoroughbreds also had a good sale ($102,813), so too did South Australia’s Mill Park ($102,500) and Makybe ($95,000). Yallambee sold as many as any and snared both a $70,579 average and acknowledgement as the best prepared draft at Oaklands Junction. Full marks to Christie Woodard and her team.

But this truly is the year of the buyer. Patinack Farm dug deep ($1,505,000 for 17 lots) and deeper still for the bushfire appeal. While Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths, currently enjoying his most successful season since hanging out a shingle, put his hand up for 10 yearlings at a cost of $727,500.

Hong Kong Jockey Club spent $640,000 on five and a cashed up Greg Eurell (thank you Mic Mac) paid $540,000 for four. As for the sires, boom stallion More Than Ready had only three sell but it was enough to top the averages at $163,333, while Stratum ($78,654) and God’s Own ($68,853) were the most eagerly sought of the first season sires.

Newcastle’s Paul Perry took eight home for $652,500, the

BARCLAYS ANTI-CRIBBING COLLAR The results are shocking!

I

f you’ll excuse the pun, this is not a suck up job. I’ve never met Richard Barclay and pretty sure I’m not in his will, but all the same, I reckon the bloke is a genius. One of those people you pass on life’s pathway that can make something out of almost nothing. Working within the thoroughbred industry for the past 25 years – mainly whacking around stables – Richard realised what a huge problem ‘windsucking’ can be for racehorse owners, trainers and breeders.

Why do horses w i n d s u c k ? Boredom usually. Instead of chewing the fat, they’ll go for the fence instead.

the habit, either in the short or long term.

I know that someone who bites his fingernails shouldn’t sit in judgement, but seeing a horse start to windsuck is about as frustrating as it gets. What’s more it’s addictive and the buggers often get their mates to join in. I’m almost positive there lunatic asylum out there caters for horse carers owners who have lost the trying to get their neddy to fanging the crib.

horseman’s corner

Years ago I was on a farm in New Zealand and a stallion came trotting up to the fence. Noticing that he had a worse set of molars than Chad Morgan, going off at every angle, the studmaster explained, that stallion had one day slipped his bottom teeth underneath the metal hot wire – some 2 centimeters off the top rail – before pulling back rapidly when he got zapped. Testimony to the strength of the wire, it didn’t move much … but the teeth did. Ouch! “We got an immediate response, but found that the shock was too severe and therefore had to be weakened.”

back to us in Australia, which we then modified and retooled into a more reliable and superior product.

What came next wasn’t quite up there with Newton getting hit on the head with an apple, but pretty impressive nevertheless.

“The collar is now made from nylon, and we are very pleased with the end result.

“One day I was filling a hand held gas stove igniter and, on testing it, thought about the ‘click click’, which occurs every time it is used. That’s the piezo switch. “I realised this would be the way to activate my collar, without having to use batteries, as the horses’ throat action would activate the piezo switch. “After more thinking and testing, then more thinking and testing, the first Barclays Anti-Cribbing Collar was sold in May 2005. “Every collar was hand made which, in the long run, is hardly practical. “Having no knowledge of manufacturing, we stumbled around, trying to find some assistance, eventually having our mould made in China. “Unfortunately, this presented many hurdles – and we crashed through some of them, mainly due to confusion at both ends. “We eventually ordered a shipment from China and there were problems with the stock which cost us an arm and a leg and nearly drained the business. “This led to retrieving our mould from China, and shipping it 44

www.tracktotrack.com

“Most of our sales are on-line, with consistent numbers from USA and a slowly growing number of UK customers, while the European market is also starting to pick up. “We have a terrific agent in the USA – Dyco-Tec Products Ltd – manufacturers of DycoSote(tm)Anti-Chewing/ Cribbing wood coatings, distribute our collar. “As awareness grows, sales are really starting to take off in Australia as well.” So, just how the collar?

effective

is

“I have never professed that it will cure all horses – probably closer to 98%. “There are some horses who ignore the zap and just keep sucking away: it doesn’t penetrate through the hide. Black, bay and brown horses have a thicker hide, while others become calloused around the throat area from wearing other tightly fitted collars, straps etcetera. “We do have a way to modify the collar a little, transferring the static shock to higher up on the neck, which is a little more tender.

“Unlike other windsucking collars and straps which have to be worn extremely tight, my collar is worn at around the same fit as we fit our own waist belts. “One of the great advantages is that I’ve found by working in with a few thoroughbred trainers is that the collar can be fitted on to a young horse who has recently come into the stable and is showing windsucking tendencies. “We’ve found that by putting the collar on these horses for 48 hours or so they show no signs of windsucking when the collar is removed. “Kind of nips the potential problem in the bud!” Cranbourne trainer, Mick Kent, is a disciple and is quick to laud the benefits of using the collars: “I was keen to try the Barclay Anti-Cribbing collar on a chronic windsucker I had in the stable. The results were outstanding … it immediately stopped her windsucking and consequently she has gained a lot of weight and her form has turned around to the point where she’s now winning races.” One thing is for sure, if the Barclays Anti-Cribbing Collar isn’t an out and out winner, the horse won’t be the only one who gets a shock. More on that in a moment, but for now, where did we get this go-getter from?

Hunkering down at Rosehill, Chris took a shine to the place and shifted there permanently early in 2003, grabbing just a handful of boxes. He now has room for 80 horses and it’s fair to say that the quality of bloodstock has increased considerably.

Like a lot of the Kiwis we run by, or are (metaphorically) run over by, Chris is passionate about his horses: mindful that they’re flesh and blood, muscle and bone and not a production line commodity. Kicking off at Foxton, Chris worked as traveling foreman for the Paddy Busuttin and

Interviewed by the Sydney Morning Herald after training 11 winners during the 2002/03 season, Chris said: “Winning isn’t something you can take for

With the NSW scene dominated throughout the past decade by Gai Waterhouse and the Ingham, now Darleybacked juggernauts, ‘Bronze’ was about the best a budding young trainer could aspire to. And there are plenty of highly talented contenders vying for third spot too: Gary Portelli, John O’Shea, Kris Lees, Gerald Ryan, David Payne, Kevin Moses, Tim Martin, Joseph Pride, Paul Perry, Guy Walter, Graeme Rogerson and a bloke by the name of Bart Cummings. But the new kid on the block really came into his own last season training 42 winners and falling just five shy of Darley trainer, Peter Snowden, in second pozzie behind Gai Waterhouse. At the Victoria Racing Club’s Super Saturday meeting at Flemington on March 7, the racing industry gave a public display of heartfelt thanks to all the men and women who bravely and selflessly volunteered their services in battling the recent Victorian bushfire crisis.

The win of star two-year-old filly Rostova in the Volunteers Sires’ Produce Stakes added a further $9,000 to the tally, courtesy of a $2,500 each way bet invested on the winner for the appeal fund by Tabcorp. Rostova’s jockey Steven King was sporting specifically-designed silks featuring the CFA logo.

The initiatives at Flemington on Super Saturday were independent of the Victorian racing industry’s united fundraising operation in aid of the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal, an ongoing campaign which was swiftly co-ordinated by Racing Victoria Limited in the wake of the outbreaks.

T

In total, nearly $300,000 was raised on the day to add to a $1 million donation previously pledged by global breeding giant Darley, sponsors of the Australian Cup on the Super Saturday programme.

RVL’s statewide bushfire endeavours have also been hugely successful. Substantial donations from all sectors of the industry, including collections from patrons at a number of Victorian race meetings following the disaster, are expected to raise a final total in the millions of dollars for the appeal.

he fund raising effort came exactly one month from the day that the Black Saturday fires took hold and shocked a nation with their devastating destruction. Approximately 400 volunteers and their families enjoyed a relaxing afternoon at Flemington, where they were hosted in a special marquee on the front lawn. The top level racing and entertainment on Super Saturday provided a welcome sanctuary from what had been a traumatic past few

Proceeds from a number of special initiatives on the day directly aided the Country Fire Authority (CFA) Public Fund in support of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria. These included donations from prizemoney by jockeys, trainers and owners, along with on-course tin collections from patrons, a raffle and telethon phone line promoted to television viewing audiences.

The final sum raised from Flemington will not be determined until the completion of an online auction on the VRC website which closes on March 23. Auction items on offer include signed saddlecloths from the first three placegetters in the Crown Newmarket Handicap, Darley Australian Cup and Cadbury Guineas.

Eager collectors were also competing for the Blue Diamond brooch donated by owner Muzaffar Yaseen from the win of now super sire Redoute’s Choice in the 1999 Blue Diamond Stakes. At the time of writing, the bidding on this coveted piece of racing memorabilia had reached $22,000. From the moment the bushfire disaster became apparent, racing has been eager to contribute to what has been a major nationwide and international relief effort.

But racing’s contribution has not been just solely confined to fundraising. Hands-on assistance commenced during the crisis. Two racecourses, Kilmore and Yarra Valley, played important practical roles at the height of the

The couple was responsible for breeding 2001 Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kournikova and also bred and raced speedy filly It’s A Giggle, winner of the Group 2 Bloodhorse Breeders Stakes at Flemington as a twoyear-old in 1997.

The quick thinking of trainer Alan Evett fortunately saved the lives of all 35 horses on Tarnpirr Farm at Narbethong, the property owned by the family of successful trainer Cliff Brown, who is currently operating in Singapore.

In the initial period following Black Saturday, TBV was extremely active in checking on the welfare of local breeders in the fire ravaged areas and helped to relocate a number of horses. TBV also combined with the national body Thoroughbred Breeders Australia to purchase much-needed horse feed in bulk and establish a central distribution point in Kilmore.

Mary Martin was also known and admired by many in the industry as Treasurer of the Wakeful Club which encourages the participation of women in racing.

Many other groups, operations and individuals within the racing industry contributed to what became a network of available assistance.

Trainer Dennis McCrohan and his wife Joy narrowly escaped with their lives, but lost everything at their property in Strathewen in fighting a futile battle against the raging flames.

Considering that more than 200 people perished in the disaster and the number of widespread communities devastated in the process, the impacts of the fires on the thoroughbred racing industry participants quite remarkably was relatively minimal, with only a small number of breeders and trainers directly affected.

The McCrohans struggled to defend their property for as long as they could, finally retreating as their house ignited all around them. They managed to drive to the dam on their property where they stood immersed in water for nearly an hour until the fire had finished wreaking havoc on their life’s possessions.

Tragically though there was loss of life experienced, with breeders

Fourteen horses on McCrohan’s property were either killed

With the property under siege from advancing flames, Evett huddled eighteen horses into the main stable, leaving the remaining horses outside in a clear area. Evett himself accompanied the horses all night in the stable fighting embers which threatened to get inside. When the fire danger passed, his actions had ensured that all the horses were safe, although there was considerable other damage to buildings and fencing on the property. Broadford trainer Barry Malanczyn was another whose horses were fortunately spared, but did lose his house, stables, fencing and car. Other Victorian breeders severely affected by the fires included David and Kathy Brown of Miscellany Bloodstock in Hurstbridge. The Browns suffered extensive damage to their property and despite saving twelve horses sadly lost three mares with foals at foot, one yearling, a two-year-old and two older horses. Max and Judy Clarke of Strath Creek were also in the path of the fires. The couple had most of their fifty acres burnt out and unfortunately lost a mare. Those in racing who felt the impacts of the fires are part of the worst natural disaster in Victoria’s history. It is hoped that the industry’s contribution to the relief effort in some way helps all individuals and families who were affected in their endeavours to overcome their hardship and rebuild their lives.
