Yes, thoroughbred sites are relative babies in the wood compared to the interactivity from other fields, but it won’t remain ‘static’ for long.

True versatility is a rare commodity on the racetrack and TOP MARC had it all. The stakeswinning son of Queensland legend Canadian Silver would race from two to seven years, win from 900m to 1800m ... wet or dry. Retiring with 12 wins, the flashy grey is entering his third season at stud and represents tremendous value at a fee of $3,300 with payment on a live foal.

They did the same last year, but this time around, the auction was performed online with bidders submitting tenders, ‘ebay’ style. Presenting much the same roster as it did in 2008, this year’s auction, however, raised some $85,000 … up by around $30,000. It’s no quantum leap but it does serve to illustrate the number of people out there who are using the internet: a demographic that many would consider novices when sitting down at the keyboard. While we’ve selected a few industry websites to get the ball rolling, we’d also like to hear from you … the end user. Email us your views (penny. verco@tracktotrack.com) and we’ll publish a ‘Reader’s Choice’ website each month. Our popular Agistment feature continues this month, while other features include a walk back through time with Jack Styring. To all the broodmare owners out there, good luck with the foals and please note we’ll be putting ‘baby photos’ in the next issue, so get those cameras working.

Can Court Command capture that elusive Group One and return to stud an even more tantalising stallion prospect?
I
T’S HARDLY UNIQUE, but you don’t find too many stallions covering over 100 mares in their first season at stud and then returning to the racetrack.
A poor analogy maybe, but it’s akin to letting a young priest loose in King’s Cross for three months and then asking him to think of nothing else but the psalms when he returns to the monastery. But, it appears, Court Command is not your average buck. A smashing type, the son of Commands was knocked down to Darren Smith for $120,000 at the 2005 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale and showed plenty of promise from the get go. Easily winning a Wyong Maiden as an autumn 2YO, was off the scene for four months and was vaulted straight into the Group Three San Domenico Stakes at Randwick. Acquitting himself well, he did however run into a very hot Gold Edition that day, finishing some two lengths astern. A clear indication of his ability, Court Command would compete at black type level at 12 subsequent outings: and he didn’t take long to chalk one up. Winning the Up And Coming-G3 at his next start, he then reeled off victories in the Golden Rose-G3 (now Group One) and Stan Fox-G2 before heading to Melbourne for a Caulfield Guineas-G1 date. >>

Despite leading for most of the journey, Court Command was overhauled in the shadows by Wonderful World and Excites. Resuming the following autumn, Court Command put in two credible performances – fifths in the Royal Sovereign-G2 (as favourite) and Eskimo PrinceLR – but a long way short of his best. Tipped out for close to a year, Court Command resumed in the Group Two Challenge at Randwick, running fifth, before a so-so effort in the Liverpool City Cup-G3 three weeks later. With leading Queensland nursery, Wattle Brae Stud, purchasing an interest in Court Command, the decision was made to pull the plug on further racing and the flashy bay was sent to Nobby to prepare for a hectic spring. A interesting prospect given his pedigree, performance and physique, Court Command was a moral to attract a sizeable book once the Wattle Brae marketing machine swung into action. Standing Court Command at $8,800, the Wattle Brae newcomer attracted 109 mares: some of Queensland’s finest matrons. Surprisingly, the decision was made to put Court Command
back into work in April, chasing “unfinished business” … a Group One victory. Announcing that Court Command would be placed with Eagle Farm mentor, Liam Birchley, Wattle Brae principal, Gary Turkington said: “Court Command thrived during his first season at stud and at the beginning of the year we started to consider the option of a (Queensland) winter carnival campaign. “It was our understanding that the horse never really returned to full health after his outstanding 3YO spring campaign and the season at stud did him the world of good. “So, we conducted a blood test before making a decision to put him back in to work and found that he was in tremendous order.” Obviously the deeds of another great Queensland sprinter in Daybreak Lover were playing havoc with the imagination. Winning the Stradbroke Handicap in 1984, Daybreak Lover went to stud in the spring of ’85 covering 59 mares. One of the Sunshine State’s favourite sons, Daybreak Lover was given another crack at ‘em in 1986, duly winning his second Stradbroke and – returning to >>

He’s got such a high cruising speed. If he’s anywhere near him (Vo Rogue) he’ll win a lot of races.” With the promise of dry tracks down south this spring, Birchley is mapping out a weight for age campaign, which may ultimately lead to the WS Cox Plate-G1 in October. “I’d like to think he’s up to it but we’ll have to sit back and wait and see how he goes in the south,” Birchley added. Vo Rogue would ultimately win 16 races in Melbourne, including some marvellous streaks during the autumns of 1988 and 1989, but the closest he came to Cox Plate glory was a fourth to Rubiton in 1987.

Birchley’s tutelage could make all the difference.
Leading from the jump and carrying 60.5kgs, Court Command demolished rivals by over three panels and the normally unflappable Birchley was full of praise, drawing comparisons with Queensland’s front running legend, Vo Rogue.
Gary Turkington certainly hopes so: “I felt a little cheated with all the wet weather we had during the winter.
But with a 10 week break and “He’s a freak of a horse to win back on firmer terra firma, like that and do it without having Court Command returned to a barrier trial,” Birchley enthused.
Who knows … Gary’s wish may well be Court’s Command.
“We’ve got to win a Group One before he goes back to stud.”

trainers report
ANDREW EASTCOTT In some circles it might be considered an oxymoron that a horse named High Principles competes in an industry whose axis spins on the gambling dollar and is forever under scrutiny for its practices. Yet, as it turns out, High Principles represents much of the good that this thoroughbred theatre has to offer. Indeed. Owned by a school principal-come-trainer with three boxes at his local track, High Principles is testimony to ‘have a go’ mores and carries the hopes of those who dare to dream. 28
www.tracktotrack.com
A
NDREW EASTCOTT IS NOT your average horse trainer. His parents hailed from the country, but he didn’t grow up surrounded by horses.
No mucking out boxes before school for this lad (although, as will later be revealed, that ‘ship’ has since well and truly docked). Growing up in Sydney’s western suburbs, Andrew in fact, was a tad more focused on head down, bum up pursuits: studying hard and playing lots of cricket. Turns out he was pretty handy at both scoring a teacher’s degree and plenty of runs. Representing Sydney Uni at grade level, Andrew’s interest in the neddies ‘heightened’ given the edict that if you didn’t have a punt, you had no hope of attaining entry to the club’s inner circle. Posted to Ambarvale, near Campbelltown, Andrew would work his way up through the ranks and several postings before

landing a gig as Deputy Principal at Narara Valley High School on NSW’s Central Coast and – eventually – the No. 1 role. Andrew is also the president of the Central Coast Secondary Principals Council and treasurer of the NSW Secondary Principals Council. Along life’s journey, Andrew – now 40 – would wed Tania, a former state representative cricketer, and they would produce a talented pair of fillies in Michelle (17) and Rachel (13), both of whom are very good tennis players and swimmers.
saw Anthony suspended.” Undeterred, Andrew cranked his thoroughbred interest up a notch and decided to get into breeding, producing a horse or two each year : primarily destined for the sales ring. However, the lingering drought at the turn of the millennium saw a couple of his home breds fail to meet the sales criteria and, cutting explanations of motivation short, Andrew decided to take out his licence in 2006 and train the ‘rejects’ himself. Not exactly blessed with large numbers at his three box Wyong base, Andrew’s owners include

But you can’t beg, borrow or buy that kind of excitement: especially as Thundergaze was one of those horses he couldn’t sell and had been rejected by no less than three trainers who refused to give him a start. But from small acorns do great oaks grow and the ‘next big thing’ might only be a box away. Andrew snapped up High Principles – an imposing son of Shovhog from the Oenjay Star mare It’s a Val – at the 2008 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale in June following a pact of peers at a principals conference.

The good news is that Andrew has nursed High Principles back to health and is looming larger than ever. He might just put Andrew on high yet. Andrew reckons there’s another waiting off stage which could also eventually shine some light at Chez Eastcott. Snapped up at Scone in May, Andrew is syndicating a daughter of the outstandingly bred Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner, Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s Choice – Skating) from a half sister to stakes winner Al Khawaaneeg. “She reminds me of her dad – big, strong and an early maturer,” Andrew enthuses. The filly appears destined to be an early comer and, as a consequence, has been nominated for both the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper. Bradbury’s Luck won his first start at 2 – the Canonbury Stakes-LR at Randwick – and is a half brother to Golden Slipper favourite Murtajil, while the filly’s dam – Vocal Dancer – is a half sister to Al Khawaaneeg who was both a stakeswinner and Group One placed at two.
ANDREW AND THUNDERGAZE
(There are seven shares remaining in the Bradbury’s Luck – Vocal Dancer filly at $4,965 per share which includes all training and insurance costs to 1 January 2010. For further information phone knights on 1300 534 455 or visit www.knigghts.com.au) In the meantime, Andrew will still keep rolling down to the track every morning at 4.20am before arriving at school “around 6ish”. It’s a long day and one that Andrew relishes, handing out plenty of gold stars to associates and mates and citing the help from his girls as invaluable. Andrew Eastcott is a principal with principles and, in the months and seasons to come, will hopefully teach us all a lesson in tenacity + work ethic + aspirations = success.

THOROUGHB
T
ECHNOLOGICAL C H A N G E is largely subliminal.
You might remember the first time you used a mobile phone, but what about the last time you used a phone box? ATM’s had us baffled for a while and I still put my card in the wrong way at the supermarket EFTPOS, but can you recall when you carried enough cash around in your back kick to last the weekend? And now we sit agog at the marvels of Blu-Ray, but wasn’t it only yesterday that I learned to program the VCR? OK, so it was only yesterday, but you get the drift. When I started at Sydney’s Sun newspaper back in 1973 you referenced articles using microfiche, while race results were written methodically on individual horse cards. Race form was typed onto copy paper – yes, on a real typewriter – and placed in a metal container which was fed into the ‘chute’ and sent downstairs to the linotype operator. He would re-type the text on this 19th century marvel which, in turn, would produce ‘slugs’. A slug is (hot) metal type that is placed with hundreds of its fellow slugs – line by line, column by column – on a plate … inked and, once proof read, dispatched to the presses. Heaven forbid if you dropped one of the b…s! Slugs everywhere, but you were the one most likely to get stomped on for being clumsy.

BRED ONLINE For brevity’s sake I’ve skimmed over about a dozen or so of the processes, but suffice to say there was some true craftsmen and women in that day. Fast forward three decades and all you need is one ageing Track To Track hack who emails his word document to the graphic designer – a genius in her own right – who lays it out on her desktop publishing program and creates a PDF (Portable Document Format), which is then sent to the printer for the creation of digital plates. The point is, I have vivid memories of standing in the newspaper room – all zits and zest – but am a little vague on the time warp that transported me and my ever widening girth to a tiny desk in 2009 Melbourne. When did the light on the microfiche shut down and the light from my ‘Windows’ switch on? When did I swap the form cards in favour of Google? Today we are bombarded with information via so many mediums, but for a journo who has always preferred to take the $1.10 for research in favour of $100 for memory, the internet is an absolute godsend. For example, when it was determined that Court Command would be the subject of this issue’s Horse of the
Month, I couldn’t recall when it was announced he would return to work after spending last season at Wattle Brae Stud. It was April (www.wattlebrae. com.au); the fact that he’d covered 100 mares in his first season? (www.studbook.org. au); sold for $120,000 as a yearling (www.stallions.com. au/statistics/salesresults/index. php); details of his race record (www.racingvictoria.net.au); the information on Daybreak Lover who also spent a season at stud before returning the track (various google searches and the Stud Book again); a description of his recent Eagle Farm victory (a number of online news services) and; the information on Vo Rogue, whom Liam Birchley compared Court Command to? (a combination of the Stud Book and
Racing Victoria). Then there’s our At A Glance section … date of birth? (Stud Book), owners and trainer? (Racing Victoria), breeder? (Stud Book), sale details? (Stallions.com.au’s sales results), race record? (Racing Victoria), sire and dam stats (www.arion.co.nz and/or www. bloodhound.net.au). These sites are just the very tip of the iceberg and are used simply to illustrate the depth of information available to the every day ‘punter’. Over the next few issues, we will detail a number of websites which should be of great use to the thoroughbred enthusiast, or at the very least, a worthy place to visit. - GREG TOBIN www.tracktotrack.com

Eagle Park
Stud
Progressive NSW nursery, Eagle Park Stud, has all bases well and truly covered this spring with exciting stallion prospects, Barbajuan and Byblos, heading up its roster.
N
EW TO THE STUD is the remarkably tough, sound and reliable performer Barbajuan, a 10 times winner of over $615,000 in stakes. Kicking off his career in Europe, Barbajuan won his maiden over 1000m at Lingfield and a 1200m contest at Kempton before proving himself at black type level – taking out the Solario Stakes-G3, a seven furlong (1400m) event at Sandown. He also raced in Italy, finishing third in the prestigious Gran Criterium-G1 at San Siro, Milan.
Continuing his career in Asia, Barbajuan raced until he was six, winning another seven races over a variety of distances – a highlight being the Winter Trophy-G3 at Taipa, Macau. Barbajuan is a 16.1hh son of one of Danehill’s best, the Irish Champion 2YO Danehill Dancer who only recently recorded a significant milestone when Latin Love became his 100th individual stakes winner. A dual Group One winner of the National Stakes and the Phoenix Stakes, Danehill Dancer has made his mark in both hemispheres – siring 10
Group One winners, including globe-trotting sprinter and 2007/08 Champion First Season Sire, Choisir, Mastercraftsman, Private Steer, Light Fantastic, Arapaho Miss, Speciosa, Again, Miss Beatrix, Alexander Tango and Where Or When. Bred on a 4 X 4 cross of Northern Dancer, Barbajuan is out of the Saddlers’ Hall mare Courtier whose grandam is the Canadian Champion 2YO Filly Par Excellance. Two successful

Bar
farm watch stallions have already emerged from this family – Khozaam (nine stakes winners) and the recently crowned leading first season sire, Charge Forward. As Barbajaun raced so well in Asia, Eagle Park Stud is finalising an agreement with a bloodstock agent to market and sell his sons to Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau. This gives breeders the opportunity to sell their stock directly off the farm rather than sending them through the sale ring. “Barbajuan had a successful and extensive race career in Asia,” said Eagle Park Stud’s Michael Glenn. “He developed an outstanding reputation that will benefit the owner/breeder if they decide to send their mares to him. There is great opportunity for this to be a lucrative operation.”
Michael is confident that Barbajuan will prove popular with breeders: “He is the best performed Danehill Dancer twoyear-old of his time – showing speed and class.” Standing alongside Barbajuan is another durable international performer: the classy Byblos. A Group One winner of the Premio Municipal de Vina del Mar, Byblos won four of 20 starts with a further 10 placings. Also winner of the Premio Thompson Matthews-G3, he was successful from 1200m – 1900m … proving himself tough, classy and honest. Byblos is a son of the influential Mr Prospector stallion Hussonet, sire of 65 stakes winners including Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler, the Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reaan
and millionaires Wild Spirit, Printemps and Host. A full brother to the Listed winner Perfect Match, Byblos is out of the Group One placed, stakes winning Worldwatch mare Brittany’s Dream, who is also dam of the stakes placed Annecy (in turn dam of the Group winner Amarna). Bred on the prolific Mr Prospector/Northern Dancer cross, Byblos hails from a strong international family with stakes winners in the United States, South America, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Already proven in his ability to sire winners (seven promising types from just a handful of runners in Chile), Byblos proved very popular during his first season at Eagle Park, serving 101 mares last spring. “He is the only proven son of Hussonet at stud in Australia,” said Michael. - KRISTEN MANNING

Jack Styring takes a walk through time and looks at some of Australia’s great performers and the impact of full relations.
T
HOROUGHBRED BREEDING IS A COMPLEX subject and those that think they have all the answers are often disillusioned
There are no short cuts to breeding: weight of money does not necessarily buy success in an industry where an ounce of luck can and does outweigh a ton of judgement. Breeding patterns have completed a full cycle where full relations no longer have a great significance, while ‘nicking’ has become something of a rarity. We tend to expect too much from mares that have already produced a top class race performer. Overall, full relations to outstanding horses have a rather poor record … as if mares have put everything into that one foal. Take Heroic for instance, arguably the best horse ever sired in this country by virtue of his impressive race record and the fact he was Champion sire seven seasons in succession. >>
www.tracktotrack.com
47
special feature Foaled in 1921, Heroic was the second foal of Chersonese (GB) who, as it turns out, was devoid of any racecourse ability and, after two failures, was imported by W and F A Moses for their Arrowfield Stud at Denman in NSW. Her first mating was to the well bred Shepherd King (GB) (by Bend Or stallion Martagon from a daughter of St Simon) which didn’t assist him very much. However, when mated to Valais, Chersonese produced Heroic, while the following year the same mating produced Thracian. The full brothers were really light years apart, the latter winning two races and siring Felspar who won the Caulfield Guineas and Victoria Derby.
Shannon, Lysander, Bernbrook and Canute were full brothers by Midstream from Idle Words (by Magpie), while there were also three full sisters in
Unlike Idle Words whose best was her second, Gazza was not so quick off the mark … her best colt – Delta (1951 Melbourne Cup) – was her eighth foal, a little unusual admittedly, although her first two foals, Grand Knight and Christopher Wren, won 16 races between them.
OWNER/BREEDER STANLEY WOOTTON, AS HIS MARE OCEANA HAD PREVIOUSLY MISSED THREE TIMES TO STAR KINGDOM.
Unquestionably, the most successful nicking patterns were achieved by Percy Miller’s Kia Ora Stud in the Hunter Valley, where Magpie mares – to either Midstream or Delville Wood – achieved remarkable success. Shannon, Delta, Hydrogen, Evening Peal … and that’s just skimming the top of the list, without even mentioning the second generation or the www.tracktotrack.com
Miller was the greatest breeder this country has known: the man with the Midas touch who bred the winners of every major race in Australia.
Gazza, another great producer during the 1940s and 50s.
Then again, Gazza left an incredible 19 foals with 15 of them racing and nine TODMAN’S CONCEPTION winning: she RESULTED FROM THE SHEER never missed or slipped a PERSEVERANCE OF HIS foal.
When Valais died in 1927 Chersonese, was mated several times with Devizes, producing mixed results: Cimbrian was quite a good horse and Miss Wiltshire, who never won a race in 24 tries, still proved a useful stud matron.

three dual Oaks winners bred on those undulating plains just outside of Scone.
the family – albeit inferior racetrack performers compared to the colts.
Midstream’s first covering of Gazza r e s u l t e d in Delta, followed by Midway (VRC St Leger), Deep River (AJC Derby) and Centreway, who won two from four including the JJ Liston Stakes.
Idle Words was first mated to Pantheon, with the resultant colt following the path of so many first foals in that he was of little consequence.
While Delta won 22 races from his 41 starts, he failed dismally as a sire.
Her second foal Shannon, however, was the stuff of racing legend. An outstanding racehorse (11 Principal Race victories), Shannon was exported to North America, where he won a further six races and became a much sought after sire.
(Powerscourt was by The Night Patrol (GB), winner of the third Cox Plate in 1924).
The Midstream – Magpie nick continued to work though
Witty Maid was another great producer: of her 10 foals – all by Powerscourt – nine were winners.
There was no mistaking the progeny of that union as the word ‘Comedy’ or ‘Comic’ appeared in the name of each of their progeny.
special feature While the mating of Witty Maid to Powerscourt would considered unfashionable at that time, it produced horses that won 100 races for the Lee family of Adelaide, trained by Bart Cummings’ father Jim. Comic Court was certainly the star of his siblings by virtue of his wins in the Melbourne Cup and the Derby, although Comedy Prince and St Comedy were both brilliant sprinters. Comic Court was the eighth foal of his dam, which was a similar pattern to Delta. Royal Gem was among the first crop of foals sired by Dhoti (GB), as fine a horse as one could wish to see. Dhoti was sent to Australia by Prince George, the Duke of Kent, to be trained by Jack Holt and after His Royal Highness was lost in the North Sea during World War II, Dhoti, Greenwich and Moonray were all sold by the estate. Dhoti was purchased by EA (Ted) Underwood and became the cornerstone of Warlaby Stud at Oaklands Junction. Royal Gem was by far the best son of his dam, French Gem, who won the VRC Oaks and was out of Fission (14 foals, 13 raced for 11 winners). French Gem was owned in Adelaide by George Badman and, after foaling to Dhoti, she returned the following year, with the result being Crown Gem who won 10 races in Melbourne and Adelaide. Royal Gem was ultimately exported to America, where he sired Kentucky Derby winner Dark Star.
SHANNON
Badman was a lucky owner and his good fortune didn’t desert him when he sent French Gem to Helios who was standing his first season at Warlaby: the result? Beau Gem, winner of 20 races including the VRC Derby.
examples … there was little between them as racetrack performers and both proved excellent sires.
As we’ve noted, when full relations in bloodstock are mentioned, there is generally one that stands out above the others. However, that wasn’t necessarily the case for three sets of full brothers by the legendary Star Kingdom (IRE).
Todman won the first Golden Slipper back in 1957 … an amazing horse who could muster speed like turning on a tap.
Todman and Noholme were, without doubt, the classic
Opinions could be divided as to who was the best: either way it’s a close call.

winning 29 races, but after failing as a sire here, he was exported to America where he produced numerous winners including Autobiography, Flying Fox, Take Off and Sky Cast’s Double: all stakes performers.
Todman’s conception resulted from the sheer perseverance of his owner/breeder Stanley Wootton, as his mare Oceana had previously missed three times to Star Kingdom. A multiple Champion Sire, Todman would produce Golden Slipper winners Sweet Embrace and Eskimo Prince, along with Imposing, Blazing Saddles and co. Noholme didn’t have to live in the shadow of his famous full brother, creating his own destiny by winning the Epsom Handicap, the Cox Plate and the Linlithgow Stakes as a three year old. Stanley Wootton didn’t want the full brothers to be competing against each other as sires in Australia and, as a consequence, Noholme was sold to American interests
STAR KINGDOM
where he proved an outstanding success (with quite a few of his sons ultimately making their way to Australia to stand at stud). Flight’s Daughter would only produce two live foals – both by Star Kingdom … the first being Skyline and the other Sky High. Remarkably, each won a Golden Slipper and each won a Derby … surely a hard act to follow! Sky High was by far the better performer of the two,
Skyline went to stud in the lower Hunter Valley, but only had minimal success. Amazingly, Sky High and Skyline’s granddam – the brilliant racemare, Flight – left nothing of note herself, but her daughter Flight’s Daughter is responsible for two Classic winners. However, there is no evidence to suggest that the next generation made up the deficiencies in the first generation. Star Kingdom duo, Fine And Dandy and Time And Tide, were full brothers bred by the Moses family, and both were gelded before they raced. They were from Shading, a daughter of the Federico Tesio bred, Brueghel (ITY) who was imported to Widden Stud by the late Frank Thompson. Fine And Dandy won the Golden Slipper and two Doncaster Handicaps, while Time And Tide put together 20 wins including a Doncaster, Caulfield Guineas and Oakleigh Plate.

And looking after the ‘players’ would be a good start … “From an owner and breeder perspective, prize money levels need to be increasing in line with costs,” Dean points out. “The current issue over the proposed merger of the Sydney Turf Club and Australian Jockey Club is probably just the tip of the iceberg and the outcome of which will be monitored closely in other states. “If the reduction on administrative costs leads to greater stakes then it’s undoubtedly a step in the right direction. “In light of the economic climate we need now, more than ever, to ensure that the people who put on the show – owners and breeders – are adequately incited to remain in the game. “These days it’s more difficult to entice people into racehorse ownership: years ago it was more of a ‘culture’ thing, but now there are far too many diversions. >>

industry profile “It’s hard enough to win a race – be it a Group One or modest country maiden – but without owners believing they will at least have some return on investment, we’ll continue to lose them in droves.”
“That sort of experience gave me a good footing and when I returned to Australia, I worked with the yearlings at Coolmore and won the Australian Thoroughbred Scholorship at Marcus Oldham at Geelong.
Like many people who have pulled the racing rein, Dean was around horses from an early age: “My father had bred and raced a couple of horses and I did the whole pony club thing.”
“Horse management courses are wonderful precursors to industry careers and the 12 months I spent at Marcus Oldham provided me with great exposure to the major ‘players’ throughout the country.”
But it wasn’t an all consuming passion and, in 1996, took his ‘show’ on the road: “I went back packing through Europe with a couple of mates … ran out of money pretty quickly!” “As luck would have it, I landed a job polo grooming in North London with a guy called Andrew Reid … had a lot of fun. Andrew also ran around 10 thoroughbred mares, the offspring of which he sold at Newmarket.”
Upon completion of his course, Dean worked for a short while at a stud farm in Torquay before getting a gig with the Woodard family’s Yallambee Stud. “It’s a tremendous learning curve at farms like Yallambee : you’re tried and tested on all aspects of farm life … foaling down, working with the stallions, yearling prep – you name it.”
that time I worked with guys such as Vin Cox, who now operates a successful agency, Richard Haynes, now at TVN and New Zealand Bloodstock, Rick Connelly who heads up Patinack Farm, TVN Thoroughbreds co-anchor and head scribe for Breednet, Tara Madgwick. “It was a really energetic young team : all imbued with a tremendous will to move forward. I met a lot of industry participants during my time at Inglis and made some invaluable contacts.” Dean was transferred to Inglis’ Melbourne office, but the stay was short lived after a too-goodto-refuse-offer was floated from Ollie Tait who, at the time, was heading up the newly formed Darley Australia. “Ollie called me out of the blue and asked me to pop in for an interview.

Kristen Manning looks at the new boys in town. HE’S NO DECOY (IRE)
Bay, 2004 In The Wings (GB) – Allegheny River (USA) (Lear Fan USA) Standing: Westbury Park, WA Ph: 0428 341 1211 www.westburypark.com.au 2009 fee: $6,600 (incl gst) – discounted to $4400 for first 60 mares
A horse who struck early form, He’s A Decoy won his first two starts at Leopardstown and Cork (the Listed Rochestown Stakes at Cork) on his way to contesting the Gr.1 Grand Criterium in Paris. Up against some of the best of that season’s two-year-olds, hesettled last and really caught the eye finishing on strongly over the final stages for fourth. The race was won in record time by the outstanding Holy Roman Emperor.
Back in work at three, He’s A Decoy took on some smart ones first up in the Gr.3 Craven Stakes at Newmarket. Racing a little keenly fresh, he boxed on gamely for fourth – a run good enough to see him take his place in the Gr.1 Irish 2000 Guineas. Once again he was up against the best of his age and he ran a terrific race – finishing on well for third behind last start English 2000 Guineas winner Cockney Rebel and future Gr.1 winner Creachadoir – beating home the five times Gr.1 winner Duke Of Marmalade. A member of the prominent
Sadler’s Wells sire line, He’s A Decoy is by one of that famed stallion’s best sons – the triple Gr.1 winner In The Wings, sire of 63 stakes winners including the champion Singspiel/ He’s A Decoy is out of the highly successful broodmare Allengheny River, also dam of the very good and much missed stallion Danetime – sire of 113 winners from 162 starters in Australia. Such is the strength of He’s A Decoy’s family that there are 34 individual stakes winners under his first four dams – quite the catalogue page!

RUWI (GB)
Bay, 2002 Unfuwain (USA) – Ma Paloma (Fr) (Highest Honor FR) Standing: Aintree Park, Vic Ph: 0412 256 219 2009 fee: $5,500 (incl gst)
Many Australian breeders like to see stallions who struck their form early on the track and this imported grandson of Northern Dancer is one such horse. Successful at his first four starts in France, the Jean-Claude Rouget trained colt each time spaced his rivals – at his most impressive taking out the Gr.2 Prix Noailles at Longchamp by three lengths.
Subsequently taking on the best of Europe’s Classic horses, Ruwi was close up (fourth and fifth) in Hurricane Run’s Prix Hocquart and Shamardal’s French Derby. A tough and consistent performer who was runner up at his next three outings at Group level, Ruwi retired as a five times winner from 21 starts – amassing over $450,000 in stakes.
He is one of 45 stakes winners sired by the royally bred Northern Dancer stallion Unfuwain, multiple Group winning half brother to the champion Nashwan and sire of eight Gr.1 horses. Ruwi is out of the two times winning Highest Honor mare Ma Paloma, full sister to the Listed winning galloper Orso from the family of the Gr.1 winners Lit de Justice, Commander Collins etc.
LIGHT HAWK
Bay, 2005 Black Hawk (GB) – Light Start (Tristalight NZ) Standing: Illoura Racing Stables, Vic Ph: (03) 5941 5647 2009 fee: $4,400 (incl gst)
There are a number of unraced stallions standing in Victoria this season and new to the ranks this spring is this big bay son of the Nureyev stallion Black Hawk.
A dual Gr.1 winner sprinter/ miler who won nine races in Japan, Black Hawk – son of the outstanding Northern Dancer stallion Nureyev – fared nicely during his time at Eliza Park. Siring 60 winners from 105 starters, Black Hawk has been best represented by the stakes winners St Trinians, Insistence
and Zeta Black. Light Hawk is a son of the multiple city winning Sir Tristram line mare Light Start, half sister to the NZ Derby Trial-LR winner Mohican Brave. Another of her sisters is the dam of the AJC Oaks/ Metropolitan Handicap-Gr.1 winner Coco Cobanna.
SO SECRET

stakes, So Secret proved himself against the best of Perth’s speedsters, proving too strong in the Gr.3 Colonel Reeves Stakes and holding his form right to the end of his consistent career. So Secret is a son of the much missed Listed winning Danehill stallion Danetime who in a short time made quite a mark – siring 113 winners from 162 southern hemisphere runners.
Amongst that tally were the stakes winners Megatic (Kingston Town Classic-Gr.1), Roman Time, Dark Target, My Time, Famous Roman, Danebeela and Danerip. So Secret is out of the triple Listed winning Bletchley Park mare Most Secret, also dam of the Railway Stakes-Gr.1 winner Covertly and the Listed winner Secret Link.

TEOFILO
Bay, 2004 Galileo (IRE) – Speirbhean (IRE) (Danehill USA) Standing: Darley, NSW Ph: (02) 6543 9001 www.darley.com.au 2009 fee: $22,000 (incl gst)
Crowned Europe’s Champion 2Y0, Teofilo raced five times – all as a juvenile – and he never tasted defeat. A debut winner at The Curragh – showing pace and fighting back after being headed – Teofilo quickly rose through the grades, next time out winning the Listed Tyros Stakes by a comfortable 1_ lengths. His next win was the Gr.2
Futurity Stakes in which he defeated future Gr.1 star Eagle Mountain – again showing great fight when challenged. Another top class galloper was taken on in the Gr.1 National Stakes and again Teofilo prevailed – odds on favourite Holy Roman Emperor second. Teofilo again defeated that horse in the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes and again he put on display his natural will to win – Holy Roman Emperor clearly heading him. Teofilo is by Sadler’s Wells’ Epsom Derby winning
champion son Galileo who did a good job at stud in Australia – siring 125 winners including the Gr.1 winner Sousa and the Group winners Gallant Tess, Alvaro and Saint Minerva. Overall he is the sire of 57 stakes winners, 11 Gr.1 winners. Teofilo is out of the Irish 1000 Guineas Trial-LR winning Danehill mare Speirbhean, half sister to the Listed winner Graduated. His third dam is the Canadian Champion Older Mare Victorian Queen and ancestress of this family is the acclaimed matriarch Chelandry.
WAY OFF
Chestnut, 2003 Way Of Light (USA) – Scenic Twig (Scenic IRE) Standing: Carin Park Stud, Vic Ph: 0400 828 256 www.wayoff.com.au 2009 fee: $2,750 (incl gst)
A pacy galloper who proved himself one of Queensland’s best two-year-olds of the 2005/06 season, Way Of Light was a strong finisher whose career highlight was victory in the Listed JF Meynink Stakes at Eagle Farm. On the strength of that victory
in a race previously won by the likes of Snippets, Falvelon, Guineas, Zephyr Zip and Breakfast Creek, Way Off was set for the Magic Millions but it was in that race that he incurred an injury that restricted his career from thereon. A member of the Mr Prospector sire line via Woodman, Way Off is a son of the French Champion 2Y0 Way Of Light, Gr.1 Grand Criterium winner from the family of Northern
Dancer, Halo, Machiavellian and Danehill. His dam is the Scenic mare Scenic Twig, daughter of the speedy Listed winning Twig Moss mare Rory’s Twig. This is the family of the outstanding Golden Slipper Stakes winners Ha Ha and Rory’s Jester, the latter being a champion sire of 76 stakes winners including the Gr.1 winners Racer’s Edge, Chortle, Aragen and Isca.
