Sadly though, the industry’s fortune has fared little better than Mount Olympus whose two runs and eight trials have thus far failed to herald a win. And, just to top it off – or should we say, lop it off – the colt is now a gelding.

I AM INVINCIBLE Yarraman Park’s latest recruit – I AM INVINCIBLE – ticks all the boxes. A stunning athlete who won by 5 lengths on debut and was Group placed at two, I Am Invincible would race on to multiple stakes success at four. A son of global sensation, Invincible Spirit, I Am Invincible also boasts a solid black type Australian family. Best of all, he will stand at Yarraman Park at an introductory fee of $11,000.

on page 14, a lot of breeders are feeling a little ‘gelded’ themselves, having paid top dollar for service fees in a bull market: fees that are far from being sustained despite the market upswing. Still, that’s the surreal beauty of this game and in the words of Forrest Gump, life is like a box of chocolates. The good thing is, we’re likely to pile on the calories by the time the foal crops of 2009 and 2010 reach the sale ring: with the anticipated correction of the global economy, ably assisted by the dramatic decrease in fees last year (and the extreme likelihood that the trimmings will stay trimmed this spring). Best part of all, the latest influx to our stallion ranks is very encouraging with Wanted, Starspangledbanner, All American, Manhattan Rain, Onemorenomore, Von Costa De Hero and I Am Invincible all bound to have plenty of fans at what will undoubtedly be ‘realistic’ introductory fees. You can read about some of the newcomers as we kick off our First Season Showcase on page 58 So, to all our readers and breeders – good luck at Easter. Hope you get lots of chocolate.

Back in the mid 70s – around the time colour TV was introduced to Australia – there was a black masterpiece by the name of Zephyr Bay doing the rounds. God threw everything at this son of Biscay: conformation, majesty and incredible speed. One day at Randwick – 25 January 1975 to be precise – Zephyr Bay switched ‘fast’ to ‘turbo’ and smashed the 1000m track record at headquarters by taking out the Challenge Stakes in 56.2 seconds. For the next 35 years, thousands upon thousands of racegoers (many who would never have seen Zephyr Bay in the flesh) witnessed his deeds, of sorts, by seeing his record printed under the race name of every 1000m event at Randwick. That was, of course, until the somewhat appropriately monikered De Lightning Ridge wiped history from the page in the 2010 running of the Challenge Stakes.
J

www.tracktotrack.com
OSEPH PRIDE ONLY GOT THE horse late last year.
Joe then kicked himself when De Lightning Ridge finished with the cap catchers at Rosehill a fortnight later, ruing his decision to start the mare over ‘6’ when her previous five victories had been at 1150m or less. The young Warwick Farm mentor was beaming from ear to ear on 13 March however when De Lightning Ridge created her own slice of history by meeting (and beating) the Challenge, clipping almost three tenths of a second off one of Australia’s longest standing track records. “I was only three years old when Zephyr Bay set that record,” Joe points out, clearly caught up with the sense of occasion. “They just don’t break records like that without being a little special. “She could win a 1000 metre group race out of the paddock, this mare. It’s not what you do with her: it’s what you don’t do with her that counts.”
De Lightning Ridge was previously trained by Keith Dryden at Canberra, but owner David O’Keeffe determined that his 4YO flyer might benefit from a sea change.
Pride, who enjoys a rapidly growing reputation for turning around the fortunes of newcomers to his stable – dual Group One winner Vision and Power for example – was nevertheless quick to praise Dryden, saying that the mare arrived in tip top order.
Joe’s newcomer, an early favourite for the Golden Slipper, hadn’t won since September and, indeed, had saluted just twice since her autumn juvenile days.
“I love this mare: she’s unbelievable. She works like the best horse in the stable and she looks like the best horse in the stable. She looked like that when she came to me.”
But she won her first trial for Pride – Warwick Farm at the end of January – and then, lo and behold, romped in by four over 1100m at Canterbury in early Feb.
Pride said De Lightning Ridge is now likely to head straight to The Galaxy over 1100m at Randwick on 17 April: “The key is to keep her fresh and to keep her to 1100 metres.”
If De Lightning Ridge is successful in the Galaxy, she will become the first female to win the race since La Baraka in 1998. There’s an ever increasing band of folk who certainly feels she deserves it … Purchased by Dryden for $260,000 at the 2007 Australian Easter Yearling Sale on behalf of Lockyer Thoroughbreds’ David O’Keeffe, De Lightning Ridge burst onto the scene as a juvenile winning her first two starts at Canberra by a combined margin of 11 lengths. Such was her impact, De Lightning Ridge was installed as pre-post favourite in early markets for the 2008 Golden Slipper, but unfortunately pulled up shinny after her third in the Black Opal Stakes. Upon resumption, she would only win one of her following four starts (the losses all over 1200m), before injury plagued her again – this time fracturing
her pelvis and putting her on the sidelines for some 10 months. Misadventure aside, De Lightning Ridge should go very close in the Galaxy: considerably enhancing what is already a tremendous broodmare band for O’Keeffe. Operating Lockyer Thoroughbreds for around five years, O’Keeffe has become a real player at the top broodmare sales in recent years, purchasing Group One winner Demerger for $725,000 at the 2007 Easter Broodmare Sale and Keeper’s stakes placed sister Little Chloe (by Danehill) for $460,000 at the Gold Coast National Magic Millions the year prior. And De Lightning Ridge is none too shabby in the pedigree department either: by Tale of the Cat – the sire of 61 stakes winners – she is out of the former top sprinter, Nanny Maroon, who won 11 races, four at stakes level and finished a half length third behind Sunline in the Coolmore Classic-G1. In the Galaxy we’ll see if De ‘greased’ Lightning Ridge can go a half length better than her mum, but Group One legacy or not, she has still changed a page that 35 years of contestants couldn’t!
AT A GLANCE
Befitting its Group One status, The Galaxy is deemed one of Australia’s elite sprints – and despite its relatively short history (first staged in 1972) – the honour roll includes Nicconi (last year), Magnus, Charge Forward, Schillaci, Snippets, Mr Illusion, Luskin Star and Bletchingly who, remarkably, hailed from the same Biscay crop as Zephyr Bay.

2010 SALES
SALES ARE UP ... BUT IS ANYONE MAKING ANY MONEY? Breednet editor, TARA MADGWICK, is an astute industry observer and on the eve of Australasia’s biggest sale, she questions just how much bang breeders are getting for the increase in buck.
T
HERE IS NO denying that recent results from yearling sales in Australasia indicate the bloodstock market is rebounding in a healthy fashion, but despite the increases, it still seems many breeders are asking themselves the question – are these yearlings not making enough money or were the service fees we paid too high? Australasian yearling sales this year have pretty much across the board posted rises in average in the region of 20 to 30%, while the largely disappointing clearance rates of last year have also improved markedly. All of this is great news and paints a very bright picture leading into the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, but if it’s all so rosy why does it seem there are so few breeders making any money? The answer it seems is that our bloodstock market has 14

rebounded to a sustainable level in line with our robust racing industry, but NOT to the heights of 2007 and 2008 when million dollar yearlings were a dime a dozen.
$100,000 to $250,000 bracket (ask anyone that has tried to buy at that level) as yearling buyers blown out of the market by exorbitant prices in past years have returned in droves. These are the grass roots racehorse owners that have no interest in paying overs for a blue blood, but have a very keen interest in buying a Theseo, a Rangirangdoo, or a Capecover: a solid horse that will race on and win a bucket load of prizemoney.
BREEDERS CAN ONLY HOPE THESE HORSES WILL REMAIN PRICED AT A LEVEL TO OFFER REASONABLE PROSPECTS FOR A PROFITABLE OUTCOME IN THREE YEARS TIME. Unfortunately, the yearlings being sold this year were conceived from service fees set during those heady years and breeders are finding that service fees set in ‘happy clappy land’ do not translate to profits in a more realistic market such as we have now. Yearling buyers have never had it so good and for the bloodstock investor keen to race, now is the time to get involved. At recent sales the middle market has seen huge competition in the just under
The top of the market is not as rosy and the days of a moderate colt by Redoute’s Choice fetching $600,000 (as standard) are gone … try about $300,000 or less. Syndicators who never dreamed of purchasing a Redoute’s Choice yearling are suddenly in the hunt this year with 14 so far selling for $300,000 or less, likewise Encosta de Lago, who has had 24 sell for $300,000 or less. Vendors who subscribe to the old rule of expecting to

receive three times service fee for a reasonable yearling have been given a very bitter pill to swallow. Consider the costs involved in producing a top grade commercial yearling. First you need to acquire the mare and for that you need to consider what level of the market you intend to be aiming at, given that in theory a mare should be worth three times the service fee of the sire selected as her partner. If you want to go to a stallion that stands for $100,000, then
LONHRO Once you have the mare, let’s say for example you buy something off the track at the upcoming Inglis Broodmare Sale or MM National Sale, you need to factor in somewhere between *$40,000 and $45,000 towards keeping that mare until spring when she can be covered,
Stallion averages and medians at this point in the sales season illustrate a fairly grim commercial outlook for many breeders who utilised some of the most expensive stallions in the land in the 2007 breeding season and, while Inglis Easter is sure to boost the figures to some extent, it’s hard to imagine any grounds for an increase in fee for any stallion at the very top end of the market.

you should be buying a mare worth around $300,000 and therein rests a common mistake made by many breeders: and that is over-mating mares in the vain hope they throw a cracking type to a hot sire – it seldom works. When the market takes a tumble as it now has, those breeders are the first to feel the pain, while those who have the seriously good mares that produce seriously good yearlings will still make money as I anticipate we will see when Inglis Easter comes around.

then for another nearly 12 months until she has the foal and, from that point, she and the foal until it is sold as a yearling … nearly three years after she is first purchased. (*costs may include agistment, vet treatment, x-rays and subsequent remedial work, insurance, yearling preparation, transport, sales entry fees etc. and let's not forget the auction house commission from the eventual sale of around 10%). These are the sorts of costs involved to produce a yearling
The days of the $330,000 service fee are gone for the foreseeable future as breeders increasingly seek out the value horse on an upswing – Fastnet Rock, Snitzel, Charge Forward, Starcraft, Lonhro are some obvious punts that have paid big dividends in the sale ring so far this year. Breeders can only hope these horses will remain priced at a level to offer reasonable prospects for a profitable outcome in three years time. Article reprinted courtesy of Breednet.com.au

EASTER I
T’S NOT WITHOUT some irony that the steady-as-she-goes143-year-old-family-run Inglis Bloodstock is now steered by a relatively young and innovative captain, whereas the seemingly more flamboyant Magic Millions – ever ready to run a flag up the pole – is guided by a triumvirate of ageing baby boomers. But there is something comforting – particularly in a depressed economy – about ‘steady as she goes’ … especially on the eve of our most intense trading period. And that’s the thing about the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale: it never needs the smoke and
(a) yearlings sell well one week (b) breeders give it back the next by buying mares. You can’t have (b) without (a), but there’s little doubt that the best chance of a result begins and ends at Easter. Tara Madgwick’s excellent article ‘Sales are up but is anyone making money’ (on page 16) is sobering to say the least, particularly for those who paid humungous service fees in a bull market, but that doesn’t alter the fact that Easter will again attract the most well heeled and diverse buying bench in the southern hemisphere and the best horses will sell well.
Anyway, at the end of the day, there are no assurances in this game that paying a big service fee will serve up four good legs and, generally, the athletes at Easter will garner the bucks.

RULES RULES, OK but the washed out Newmarket Handicap meeting at Flemington could well be the tale of the tape for Easter ’10. The Peter Moody trained Wanted, an $800,000 turnout from the 2008 chapter, beat his rivals and the ferocious storm to record a memorable win in the Newmarket, and it’s his sire – Fastnet Rock – who is poised to bring the most joy at Easter.
Inglis is also focusing on the 114 strong Easter II session on the Thursday, especially in light of previous graduate, Fair Perfume, who won the 2009 VRC Oaks-G1 for King Bart.
All up, the sale will showcase 614 entries, of which 172 are siblings to stakes winners (51 Group One winners) and 173 lots from stakes winning dams (44 Group One winners).
With 44 entries, Fastnet Rock has the fourth largest consignment of any sire, and with a host of stakes winners – including three Group One winners (Wanted, Rock Classic and Irish Lights) in the past six months – he’s hotter than hot. And, with a service fee of just $55,000 in 2007, it’s pretty much all upside. Choisir’s another who is going like a bullet and his 11 entries include a half sister to Golden Slipper-G1 winner Sebring, while the Lonhros, Starcrafts, Stratums and Snitzels of this world should all sell well. And don’t get us wrong: a large portion of the 47 Redoute’s Choices, 57 Encosta de Lagos, 29 More Than Readys, 55 Flying Spurs and 14 Zabeels will again underpin the southern hemisphere’s premier get together.
FAINT PERFUME
“This is without doubt the best group of horses seen in this session and once again we are grateful for the support of our clients,” Inglis Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy points out.
How does this compare with previous years? Don’t know … doesn’t matter. It’s Easter … it’s the best.

INGLIS AUTUMN YEARLING SALE PREVIEW
‘SECOND’ SALE
has the
TOP GEAR D ESPITE IT’S relatively close, chronological, position to Easter, the Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale is the poorer cousin of Aussie auctions. There’s not much chance of finding a Redoute’s Choice out of a Group One winning mare in this index. But, as Jamie Inglis once said, horses don’t read papers and Autumn sale graduates have a tendency toward upstaging ivy league rivals – with disturbing regularity. Take Pompeii Ruler for instance. He lowered the flag on many an Easter, Gold Coast or Karaka competitor, winning races like the Australian Cup and Queen Elizabeth, winning $2.2 million in stakes. Grand Journey was another: he won a Derby and over $600,000. Yet another Group One winner was Lazer Sharp. Turns out you could have picked up all three for less than $20,000. And if you think we’re churning up ancient history, here’s a couple more ‘recent’ examples. She’s Got Gears, whom Robbie Laing snaffled for $45,000 at last
POMPEII RULER
year’s Autumn, won on debut at Flemington – the Listed AGL Renewable Energy Stakes – with the beaten brigade including Crystal Lily. At the time of writing, Crystal Lily is second favourite for the Golden Slipper. Then there’s Our Baby Bonus, a Mick Price pick up ($42,500). Coincidentally, Mick also put the polish on Pompeii Ruler. By Dash For Cash (who has 24 yearlings entered for Autumn), Our Baby Bonus remains
undefeated after scoring at Bendigo on debut before backing up with comfortable wins at Caulfield and Moonee Valley in January. Meanwhile, at the end of February, Adelaide flyer, Periduki, became the latest stakes winner from Autumn when proving far too slick in the Listed Matrice Stakes. Costing just $4,000 at the 2006 chapter, Periduki originally raced in the Northern Territory and has now won 13 races and over $300,000.

INGLIS AUTUMN YEARLING SALE PREVIEW
RS PETER HEAGNEY
“This sale consistently gets racetrack results that outperform the corresponding purchase prices … and buyers now recognise this fact,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney points out. “The increase in the size of the catalogue by an additional 130 horses this year (505 entries overall) reflects the confidence vendors have in this sale and we appreciate the support they have given us once again.” Indicatively, amidst the storm of falling sale prices in ’08 and ’09, Autumn not only managed to find smooth waters, she hit full speed. “Few sales in the world could boast improvement on 2008 figures last year, but the Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale can lay claim to that rare feat, with the average, aggregate and clearance rate all experiencing significant growth.” Significantly, all Autumn graduates are eligible to be
nominated for the $2.6 million Inglis Race Series, which includes the $100,000 Inglis Autumn Plate. Speaking of which, the 2010 Inglis Autumn Plate is being run at Seymour on Tuesday 20 April, two days prior to the sale which runs for two days (22-23 April). You should be there too!

MICHAEL FORD Michael Ford’s job could be likened to that of an umpire or referee. When everything’s running smoothly, you never hear from him. However, when the manure hits the fan, a spotlight appears above his desk. As Keeper of the Australian Stud Book, Michael is currently facing his biggest challenge – indeed, the most explosive event to land in any Keeper’s lap … either historically or demographically. The proposed introduction of Artificial Insemination (AI) to the world of thoroughbreds is currently being fought over in the courts and the divisive nature of this beast has the potential to split our industry asunder. AI has been a chestnut for years – probably ever since they found ‘straws’ weren’t only used for drinking – but until recently it has been something of a non event … the International Stud Book Committee’s no really meaning NO. But then former bookmaker, Sydney Turf Club Chairman, owner and breeder, Bruce McHugh decided he wasn’t going to take nought, nyet, nada for an answer and is seeking resolution through legal channels. Given its status in the courts, Michael is understandably mum over the whole issue of AI, but if ever there’s a bloke equipped to ride out >> the maelstrom, it’s Keeper No. 8.

N A SPORT WHERE SOME rogues and scallywags often obtain legendary status for their ‘ingenuity’, Michael Ford is a pillar of integrity. He has to be … like race day stewards, Michael is charged with keeping an eye on the gate, to make sure that those who seek to twist and turn are kept in line. Let’s face it, there’s many a slip between lip and cup in our daily toil (especially from journalists), but if something ‘jumps the fence’ in Michael’s world, it can affect generations of bloodstock. Lack of vigilance on his and his team’s part could see you racing a horse by No One’s Choice instead of Redoute’s Choice.
"I SOON FOUND THAT MOVING FURNITURE WASN'T MY LIFELONG DREAM" The task of both accumulating and maintaining Australia’s voluminous breeding records – some 27,000 broodmares are returned to the stud book every year – falls squarely in Michael’s lap. And it’s a lap perfectly fitted for the task. As a nipper, the ever innovative Michael developed a board game with cut out horses which he raced by rolling the dice. He was also very interested in genealogy and record keeping and started to keep records on sire lines and broodmare

lines, developing a love for all things breeding. Obviously a family trait given that Michael, by Barry out of Fay, is the eldest of 16 children. That’s right folks, 16! Strangely enough, television had been introduced to Australia well before No. 16 dropped, but evidently re-runs of I Love Lucy weren’t high on the Ford priority scale. Ever the toiler, Michael sang for his supper by selling The Sun and The Daily Mirror (Sydney’s afternoon newspapers) outside Randwick racecourse on race days, little knowing that one day he’d firmly ensconced in the hallowed halls on Alison Road. But if all this mention of genealogy, record keeping and board game development leaves you with the impression that Michael Ford is king of the geeks, nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, he is unassuming. Yes, he doesn’t stand out in a crowd and, yes, the only time he shouts is when he’s standing at the bar, but a nerd? Never.
papers outside Randwick, the Keeper is justifiably proud of his efforts. However, Michael realised that music wasn’t going to keep putting steak on the table and, after marrying Kathy in 1983 and starting his own family – Georgia (personal assistant, now 25), Maxine (high school teacher, 23) and Stephen (apprentice carpenter, 20) – Michael decided to focus on writing notes than playing them. (‘Breeding’ has obviously come to the fore though with all three kids being talented musicians). Starting up his own taxi truck business after leaving school (“I soon found that moving furniture wasn’t my lifelong dream”) and subsequently working at the University of Technology after completing his Arts degree, some friends pointed out a newspaper advertisement in 1984, seeking out an assistant Deputy Keeper of the Stud Book.
An accomplished pianist, Michael played in a rock band in the early 70s and, as you can see from the accompanying photo, he was hardly party to the Brylcreem and three pens in your top pocket group. Michael also wrote and produced a musical called Double Vision and, while it got as close to the West End as Andrew Lloyd Weber did selling

we certainly have diversified into a number of other areas which are of interest to people breeding horses.”
IN A SPORT WHERE SOME ROGUES AND SCALLYWAGS OFTEN OBTAIN LEGENDARY STATUS FOR THEIR ‘INGENUITY’, MICHAEL FORD IS A PILLAR OF INTEGRITY.
Now the online version of the Australian Stud Book contains the breeding records of 750,000 horses, the results of 40,000 major races and has about 100,000 hits a day.
Another relatively recent initiative was the use of microchips which, along with DNA sampling, has dramatically altered the way of identifying horses.
A more recent addition is the last three racing performances and career records of every horse to have raced in Australia since 1995.
Previously using blood typing as a form of ID, the chip is now inserted at the time when mane hair is taken for DNA sampling – usually from weanling to yearling stage.
Importantly, 85% of breeders now make their returns on line and “it’s probably fair to say that these days the stud book is a lot more than just a stud book.

Its primary role will always be to ensure the integrity of breeding in Australia through the identification protocol, but

Michael explains: “In a couple of years we will probably be using a chip that measures the temperature of a horse as well as other bodily readings. I know that people within the industry would like to see microchips do even more, but that would currently require a larger chip or external antennae. It would be great if you could have a GPS system inserted so a horse’s sectionals could be measured.” Determined that, following Digby’s retirement, he would be next in succession, Michael studied for and obtained a Master of Business Administration Degree to “make sure I was on top of the modern
style of business management. It was also to demonstrate to the board that I was the right candidate for the role.” During his quarter century at the Stud Book, Michael has also travelled extensively to South East Asia, the United States and Great Britain: giving keynotes at several conferences and forging strong relationships with member countries of the International Stud Book Committee. He clearly doesn’t relish having to turn up at a future conference and explain to his compadres that Australia has introduced AI, thus making us a virtual pariah on the global stage. But that’s still quite some time off and, as they say in the classics, the fat lady still hasn’t sung. Nor has Michael Ford. >>

» KOHNKE’S HANDY HINT » Provide Hydration Fluid after Training/ Travelling Studies have shown that horses prefer to drink cool (not cold) water from the ‘hose end’ or preferably luke-warm water after exercise. Many trainers condition horses to drink molasses water or weak rehydration fluids after exercise each day. One cheap and highly effective way of rehydrating a horse after daily exercise, travelling or after a race, is to provide 5 litres of luke-warm water (eg add hot water from a thermos to cold water) containing 50 g (2 _ tablespoonfuls) of plain, fine table salt (it dissolves quickly) and 50 g glucose or dextrose (glucose assists sodium uptake from the small intestine) to ensure its palatability. Horses can be conditioned to drink the warm, salty water after each training session by offering it in the wash bay in a small tub or bowl/dish – after a couple of days they will begin to drink the fluid and once ‘hooked’ on it, it is an easy, effective way of rehydrating a horse within 5-10 minutes after training, or following a race before
» KOHNKE’S HANDY HINT » Horse Exhibits Discomfort after a Strong Saline If a horse goes down to roll, or appears uncomfortable (pawing the ground, looking at its flank or ‘sitting down like a dog’) within 1-5 minutes after a saline drench is administered, it is possible that the animal has a gastric or duodenal ulcer which is irritated by the strong salt solution. AI – TO BE OR
The court case into whether artificial insemination is to be introduced to the Australian thoroughbred breeding industry has momentarily stalled while the Stud Book, Thoroughbred Breeders Australia and Racing Information Services Australia (RISA) mounts a defence. However, it will rear its head again soon enough as protagonist Bruce McHugh is determined to see a resolution regardless of cost. A number of half hearted attempts to establish AI as a viable alternative to natural covers have taken place over the years, but McHugh’s muscle is the first time the issue has gone past a bit of push and shove.
While arguments for and against the introduction of AI would fill volumes, and there should be no oversimplification of such a complex issue, it does seem to boil down to two major issues: (1) trade implications and (2) narrowing of the genetic pool. Firstly, does anyone really want to see 300 Redoute’s Choice yearlings for sale every year? The Harness racing industry, which does allow AI, attempted to monitor the number of foals that could be produced via artificial means, but was defeated in a restriction of trade action. Having said that, would any self
respecting stud master with a top line stallion, allow the market to be flooded to such a degree? Would he or she jeopardise a stallion’s earning potential for short term gain. And after all, regardless of the court case outcome, the stud master and majority shareholders will still hold some sway as to the number of breeding ‘straws’ made available. There’s also been considering rending of hair as to how Australian thoroughbreds – foaled via AI – will be perceived on the world stage.Well, basically, unless the other countries follow

NOT TO BE? suit, AI progeny will not be able to compete in major races overseas which, unquestionably, will have major ramifications on our ever increasing export market. China’s about to open up and, ironically, AI would probably assist in maintaining supply to the region, but not if it’s banned. Finally, the issue of gene pools. I couldn’t find a parking space at Sydney University, let alone tenure, and my views should hardly be considered authoritative. However, the issue of ‘narrowing’ the genetic pool should really be observed from a position
of diversity – or lack thereof – rather than implications AI would somehow diminish ‘quality’. It has been proven that despite operating from a small base of horses in remote regions, conformational defects and disease don’t necessarily arise, but it does make you wonder where the Australasian thoroughbred industry would be if we only bred from that which was considered elite? Star Kingdom altered breeding in this country, dominating the landscape for four decades, but he was hardly a superstar back home in England. The same
with Sir Tristram and, although Danehill became the shuttle star of our lifetime, initially he wasn’t that hot a property. Danehill covered 209 in his first three years at stud in Australia: the launching pad for legend. But what if he’d only covered 20 because there was something deemed bigger or better on the market that could cover 400? There’s no easy answer to AI. Let’s just hope whoever makes the final decision doesn’t do so to the detriment of stake holders. - GREG TOBIN

The Mitchell family – despite trading body blows with much larger operations – has forged an enviable reputation for producing superior yearlings at Australasia’s No. 1 sale. They practically ran Easter in 2006 with three yearlings selling for $2 million plus – including the $3 million Redoute’s Choice colt – followed up at Easter Broodmares the next year with $3.4 million for Virage de Fortune … and they’ve sold seven figure yearlings in ’08 and ’09 as well.
"HE ONLY HAD A COUPLE OF STARTS AS A JUVENILE BUT SHOWED PLENTY OF TOE.” But, for a change, Yarraman Park has sort of trumped their Easter by trumpeting the arrival of a new stallion at its Hunter Valley showpiece … I Am Invincible. Searching for a viable replacement when their promising Danehill stallion, Foreplay, became infertile last season, I Am Invincible has the bona fides to fill those shoes. 42
www.tracktotrack.com
Firstly, he’s a stunner. Hailing from the first crop of Green Desert stallion, Invincible Spirit, I Am Invincible certainly caught the eye of Arthur Mitchell who, like all stud masters worth their salt, will monitor potential ‘bulls’ from day one.
subsequent black type winner, I Have No Fear, by five panels. Drawn near the car park for his next tilt – in the Group Three Kindergarten Stakes – I Am Invincible used up plenty of petrol to cross the field
"AS SOON AS HE CAME OUT OF THE BOX WE WERE BLOWN AWAY: HE’S A MAGNIFICENT HORSE … REALLY MASCULINE, STRONG AND POWERFUL WITH A LOVELY HEAD AND A GREAT EYE.” “Harry (Mitchell) and I have followed I Am Invincible since he was an early two year old,” Arthur points out. “He only had a couple of starts as a juvenile but showed plenty of toe.” Purchased by Ray and Brett Gall as a yearling ($62,500) at the 2006 Inglis Sydney Classic, I Am Invincible smashed his rivals on debut, winning over 1000m at Warwick Farm and beating
and held on gamely for third behind eventual Golden Slipper winner Forensics. Injured in the Todman Stakes and returning for a solitary start as an early spring 3YO, I Am Invincible was off the scene for over 13 months, finally returning with a win and a miss prior to another enforced lay off. Victorian trainer, Peter Morgan, found the key though and I Am Invincible’s four length romp at Caulfield in March last year sparked a rash of outstanding performances, including a victory in the DC McKay Stakes-G3 at Morphettville, a length second to the legendary sprinter Takeover Target in the Goodwood Handicap-G1 and a win at Caulfield in the Sir John Monash Stakes-LR.
STALLION WATCH
The fact that Invincible Spirit is now deemed too valuable to shuttle has not been lost on the Mitchells, hence their move on his nippiest Aussie. “We always knew he was a good looking horse, but you still want to see them first hand so we flew to Melbourne to inspect I Am Invincible at Peter Morgan’s stables,” Arthur adds. “As soon as he came out of the box we were blown away: he’s a magnificent horse … really masculine, strong and powerful with a lovely head and a great eye.” You’ll have to excuse the pun, but there wasn’t too much foreplay before the Mitchells struck a deal with the Galls.
All up, I Am Invincible would race on 13 occasions for five wins, two placings and over $270,000 in stakes. I Am Invincible is the best Australian performed son of Invincible Spirit, who really is something of a global sensation with 32 stakes winners and his oldest northern hemisphere runners having just turned six. Invincible Spirit’s first crop in Europe absolutely blew them away, breaking all sorts of records with 35 individual 2YO winners in that first season and has gone from very good to better with Group One winners including French Derby winner Lawman, Fleeting Spirit (Newmarket July Cup) and
NEVER SHORT OF AN EASTER EGG, YARRAMAN STUD IS CONVINCED FEES ARE NOT THE ONLY THING THAT I AM INVINCIBLE WILL HAVE IN COMMON WITH HIS SIRE. Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hero Vale of York. Best of all, he’s by Danzig stallion Green Desert whose sire sons have met with tremendous success down under including Kiwi stars Cape Cross, perennial champ, Volksraad and Sunline’s sire, Desert Sun.
The Gall family has also raced the top racemare, Mamzelle Pedrille (13 wins – 7 at stakes level – and dam of Group Two winner O’Lonhro) who is closely related to I Am Invincible, clearly swaying their decision to purchase the colt as a yearling. I Am Invincible is out of the Canny Lad mare, Cannarelle (dam of three winners from three to race) and is, in turn, from a sister to Mamzelle Pedrille. I Am Invincible will open the batting at Yarraman this spring at a fee of $11,000 which, coincidentally, was Invincible Spirit’s fee for his final Australian book. Never short of an Easter egg, Yarraman Stud is convinced fees are not the only thing that I Am Invincible will have in common with his sire. www.tracktotrack.com

It will be difficult to gauge just how much Dr John Konhke has penned over the last 30 years, but you wouldn’t fit his output on your every day Ikea bookshelf. One of the best known vets in the country, John is renowned for his work in the areas of nutrition and horse care and in the accompanying feature, the good doctor takes a close look at limb length and the bearing it has on racetrack success.

T
HERE ARE MANY aspects of a horse’s conformation, muscle structure, strength, genetic influences and individual ‘psychology’, natural ability or strive to win, which have an influence on its performance and ability to win races. 44
www.tracktotrack.com
There are many success stories of ‘freak’ horses, which appear to have an inner ‘spirit’ or ‘heart’ to win, despite less than fashionable breeding: or even a strong or sound conformation. Countless books have been written on breeding theory and the attributes of famous
racehorses, all providing a valuable insight into the genetics of winning bloodlines and individual horses. In many cases, even well bred horses can lack the ‘genes’ or the innate performance potential which can make them an elite racehorse. Some authorities believe that every racehorse has natural ability, which only has to be brought out by training and feeding to make it a winner.
KOHNKE’S KORNER
Ideally, such a horse has to be able to win repeatedly and not be a ‘one race wonder’! There have been many methods by which performance ability can be evaluated. About 30 years ago, ECG measurements to calculate ‘heart score’, or the relative size of a horse’s heart, were thought to be the ultimate physical evaluation measurement which could help predict a horse’s racing ability. However, even if the score was in excess of 120 units, predicting a large heart size and, hence, the likelihood of good race performance, a large heart size can be caused by vascular compensation or pathological conditions which can have a negative impact on speed and stamina. The Heart Score is now considered a useful ‘tool’ as one of a number of evaluation criteria in assessing a horse’s individual ability on the racetrack. Of course, the ability to ‘win against the odds’ when challenged by the best in its class or group is sometimes influenced by race day conditions, track surface and the skill or ‘will’ of the jockey.
The Influence of Stride Length It has long been postulated that a long stride length is a prerequisite for a fast racing speed. It is also commonly believed that a horse which walks with a long ‘loping’ stride and ‘covers more ground’ will have a long stride length at the gallop. Both these factors are true to some extent. Observations using high speed cameras and GPS speed monitors have found that there is a large variation between individual horses in length of stride and stride frequency at an all-out gallop. The fastest
horses have the highest stride frequency, stride length and smooth regularity of stride. Secretariat, heralded as one of the fastest racehorses, had a stride length of 7.74 metres (24.8 feet) and an average speed of 16.764 metres/second over a 2400 metre race journey. However, studies have shown that stride length is not a positive correlation to speed, but stride frequency directly influences speed and race performance. >>

The maximum limit of stride frequency is influenced by the height of a horse and the length of its upper limbs above the knee and hock; the weight distribution or balance over the limbs; the flexibility of the limb tendons and joints and the relative percentage of fast twitch fibres in the hind limb propulsive muscles. All these factors can be influenced by genetics to select and breed horses with a higher percentage of fast twitch muscle fibres; training to maximise fitness, as well as selecting horses with short cannons and long upper limbs. Observations have indicated that horses accelerate out of the
gates, by increasing their stride frequency to reach maximum speed and then sustain their race speed by increasing to an optimum, steady stride length. Additionally, studies suggest that elite racehorses are able to gallop at high speed using a combination of optimum stride length and stride frequency and are able to accelerate by increasing stride frequency again to the race finish. It is also established that ‘urging’ by a jockey by voice or leg movement, as well as controlled use of a whip, can make a horse increase its stride length and frequency to the winning post. It is believed that without ‘urging’, stride frequency can be reduced due to muscle fatigue at the end of the race.
Measuring Lower and Upper Limb Length Ratios Many older trainers and successful breeders agree that short front cannon bones compared to a horse of the same height with long cannon bones, are highly desirable for speed. Simply standing to the side and viewing the comparative lower limb length below the knee, relative to knee to the wither height, can provide a relative length and estimate of stride length.

It is the upper limb length above the knees and hocks of a racing horse which influences the ‘leverage’ or power of the stride in a given stride length. Observing a horse as it walks can help gain a rough idea of the ground the horse ‘covers’ in each stride. This may influence stride length at all-out speed.
Stride Regularity The regularity of the stride also has an influence on the speed of a racing horse. Successful 1000 -1200 metre sprint horses have higher stride frequency, but a longer duration of ground contact from a shorter back length and heavily muscled topline and rump (compact horses), so as to increase their muscle impulsion strength and all-out speed. They also have a flatter, more regular stride cycle when galloping. Observations have shown that when galloping at maximum speed, a horse develops a ‘wheel gallop’, whereby it lowers its centre of gravity and increases its stride frequency and ground contact to produce more muscle power and stride regularity at the sprint, thus reducing energy wastage by minimising the rocking and cyclic upward movement at highest speeds. They often flatten their ears, stretch their necks forward (perhaps to take in more air) and become flatter and level in their galloping action. Slower horses have a shorter stride length and/or frequency as compared to elite horses, which also sustain their physical, metabolic and neuromuscular limit for the longest period. Locomotion research reveals that muscle and metabolic fatigue can affect stride length towards the end of a race, with most horses, except fit elite horses, slowing down as they approach the line.
KOHNKE’S KORNER
The Larry Dodson Measuring System Over the years, I had the pleasure of meeting and discussing horse racing with Larry Dodson, a straight talking American feedlot expert who had a passion for racehorses. Larry lived in retirement in Wangaratta and passed away three years ago. Larry’s detailed observations helped him evaluate and purchase many horses which won races for him and he also bred a number of successful horses based on his simple measurements.
Over a 30 year period, Larry measured over 20,000 elite racehorses from photographs and in the flesh, to calculate his upper/lower limb ratios. He found that if a horse had the attributes of stamina, strength, willingness and the benefit of proper training, upper limb length had a direct influence on ultimate speed. I am indebted to Larry’s widow Glenda for allowing me to publish Larry’s unique way of determining upper and lower limb ratios.
Where did Larry learn about the importance of upper limb length in stride length and ‘leverage’ power? Larry was raised with native American Indians on a large cattle ranch reserve in North Dakota, USA.
The simple diagram accompanying this feature illustrates the Larry Dodson Measuring System and the ratios which he found were desirable for upper limb length, power and speed.
As a young boy, the American Indians showed him how they measured their horses (native Appaloosas) to select them for speed using strings made from reeds, thus Larry was intrigued by their measurement of upper and lower limb ratios.
The measurements become more accurate in horses above 18 months of age when the lower limb epiphyses close, although it can be used to check yearlings for relative limb length proportions.
Upper limb length measurement can be used on thoroughbreds to estimate stride length and likely speed. Larry chose broodmares and stallions based on these measurements and bred his mares to stallions which could improve the ratios. Unfortunately, the results of these matings were not evaluated due to his sudden passing. When selecting a yearling (which are often 15-18 months of age by sale time), or a tried horse, broodmare or stallion, record the upper and lower limb and back length ratios. Larry observed that winning sprinters had a back slightly shorter or equal to, the wither to elbow distance (ie. more compact) and that successful stayers had a longer back length, relative to the wither to elbow distance. Try using these measurements to add an extra dimension on selecting a horse for racing. >>
» HANDY HINT » Measuring Upper Limb Length The horse must be standing square and a piece of string or preferably a sewing tape measure can be used to measure the relative upper and lower limb lengths. A rough estimate of the upper limb length relative to the lower limb length can be obtained by laying the string or tape from the lumbo-sacral point to the point of the hock (in a line as a crow flies), then holding the string/tape at the point of the hock then, dropping the upper end vertically from the point of the hock to the ground behind the heels. By doubling the string/tape back on itself, you can obtain the ‘over shoot’ of the upper length to the lower length (See illustration A/D measurements). This means that the upper hind limb is over twice the lower limb length in a good racehorse or pacer. A 10-15cm ‘overshoot’ in excess of twice the upper hind limb length has a high correlation with speed on the track.

KOHNKE’S KORNER
Evaluating Upper Limb and Stride Length Horses with short cannon bones and longer upper limbs from the hocks and elbows have a longer stride length and speed when working. When the horse is standing square, a tape measure can be used to measure length ratios between the upper and lower limbs on the near side.
Measurement C (Upper Front Limb Length): Mid withers (flat area) to point over shoulder to point of elbow.
Measurement A (Upper Hind limb Length): From the lumbo-sacral joint (see location on diagram) in a line following the shape of the rump to the point of the hock. Larry found that elite racehorses had an upper hind limb length of more than 140 cms.
Measurement E (Length of Back): Ratio E divided by C should be less than 1:0.
Measurement D (Front Lower Limb): Point of elbow to point of fetlock. Ratio C divided by D should be greater than 1:1.
These measurement ratios can provide a guideline to length of stride and are more accurate from yearling age and older as the skeleton matures. Remember though that ability and actual race performance can be influenced by many other factors, including genetics, the level of fitness and oxygen uptake, lameness and concurrent clinical disease, as well as the horse’s willingness to race.
Measurement B (Lower Limb Length): Point of hock directly to ground surface. Ratio A divided by B should be greater than 2:2.
Facts and Stats • The stride length is determined by measuring the distance of the full cycle of limb motion, including the ground contact phase and the suspension phase, when no limbs are in contact with the ground surface. It is the distance between 2 successive hoof to ground contacts of the one limb. A galloping Thoroughbred racehorse has a maximum stride length of around 7.2 metres (24.4 feet) and an all-out speed of 17 metres/second, or 48 km/ hour with a stride frequency of around 2.9 strides per second. Quarter horses can gallop a 1/4 mile at 89 km/h. A pacing Standardbred has
a maximum stride length of about 6.3 metres (21 feet) at a top speed of 16 metres per second, with a maximum stride frequency of 2.4 strides per second. • Horses are limited to a maximum of around 2.9 strides per second, or 155 strides per minute, at the gallop due to the neurological limit for nervous system impulses. • Stride length can be influenced by upper limb length, rather than full limb length. All fast sprint animals such as greyhounds and cheetahs, have a long upper limb above
the wrist (knee) and hock and can ‘hoop’ their back as a spring for extra stride length and power. Horses are unable to ‘hoop’ their backs for added stride length and speed. Greyhounds gallop at a maximum of 72 km/hour with a stride length of 2.45 metres in the hind limbs and 4 strides per second. Cheetahs can run at up to 112 km/h, sustaining a speed over 100km/h for 5 km at a rate of 3.5 strides per second. Stride length at the gallop is reduced on a hard track surface, but stride length can increase on poly and wood fibre surfaces compared to turf tracks.

HORSEMAN’S CORNER
STREUfex Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense might have given STREUfex international cred, but it took a Shocking result in last year’s Melbourne Cup to make this revolutionary product the bedding of choice for Australian trainers and stud farms.
G
AVIN EVANS would be the first to admit that STREUfex won’t make your horse run faster – per se – but this rather articulate head of Premier Equine Products Pty Ltd (PEP) has some fairly compelling arguments as to why every trainer or farm should be using his horse bedding.
“Currently, STREUfex runners make up less than 5% of the racehorse population in Australia, yet of the 36 Group One events staged this season, 13 – or 36% have been won by horses who use our bedding,” Gavin points out. “As for 2010, 10 Group Ones have been run and won up to the middle of March and half were taken out by STREUfex horses.” But, while Gavin is understandably passionate about the product PEP have secured the rights to manufacture and distribute throughout Australasia and South East Asia, the official head of the cheer squad is leading trainer Mark Kavanagh.
His 2009 Melbourne Cup winner, Shocking, suffered well documented allergies arising from the wood shavings used in his box, but the reduction in harmful dust particles by switching to STREUfex has seen his horse grow another leg. “Shocking’s ‘turnaround’ naturally caught everyone’s attention, but we’re also very happy that the rest of the horses in the stable are now on STREUfex … it gives them every chance to produce their best,” Mark enthuses. You don’t think it should make that much difference? Swimmer Mark Spitz was an asthmatic and methinks he wouldn’t have won seven gold medals if he’d slept on a crappy mattress. So what is STREUfex? Firstly, STREUfex is made from high quality wheat straw and, during the production process, is heated to 195 degrees, reducing bacteria, yeast and mould commonly found in unprocessed straw or wood shavings. As part of the process, dust is extracted to create the least harmful respiratory environment for your valuable equine asset. Additionally, natural, organic oils are added to repel insects, as is an ‘anti-eat’, meaning you won’t come back the next morning to find the

HORSEMAN’S CORNER Embraced by leading trainers throughout the northern hemisphere – including Carl Nafzger (trainer of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense) – STREUfex was first trialed by Australian trainers in 2007 when the team at PEP determined to purchase the licence and build the manufacturing facility.

buggers have eaten half their bed! The end result is a straw pellet that is purpose designed as horse bedding and performs accordingly. That’s the technical part – but what about other advantages … especially those affecting ‘back and hip’? STREUfex absorbs up to 4 or 5 times its own weight and manure is coated making it easy to identify and remove which, all up, reduces cleaning time by 300%. Bottom line, you can clean 12 boxes in the time it usually takes you to muck out four. Furthermore, STREUfex comes in 15kg or 20kg bags and you need around ten bags to fill a 12 x 12. Due to the effectiveness and ease of cleaning a STREUfex box, the volume of bedding required to maintain the stable is reduced significantly. This not only reduces the cost of bedding but also labour and waste removal costs, making it much easier on the hip pocket. Gavin confirms that he’s not likely to run into any problems with ‘Greenies’ in the near future either, given that STREUfex is VERY environmentally friendly: it’s 100% organic, doesn’t require watering down, reduces stable waste by up to 60% AND rapidly decomposes into quality compost.
Indeed there is a system in place where the waste product from stables at major city tracks is collected and re-cycled into high quality garden mulch.
Disciples now include Kavanagh, of course, Danny O’Brien, Peter Moody, David Hayes, Mick Price, John O’Shea and Anthony Cummings among the training set, while studs utilising STREUfex are Widden Stud, Eliza Park, Windsor Park, Japan’s Shadai Stallion Station and Northern Farm, plus the Japan Racing Association, Singapore Turf Club and Hong Kong Jockey Club.
STREUfex was first used in Europe in the early naughties, but its popularity grew considerably when introduced to North America by businessman and mega owner Frank Stronach.
While, as in the majority of business ventures, entrepreneurism is fiscally driven, the team at PEP is proud as punch that this company is 100% Australian owned and, particularly chuffed that the production facility at Finley in NSW has buoyed the local economy.
WHEN A COMPANY
“Finley was once rice growing country but the area has really been feeling the pinch over the last few years,” Gavin explains. “However, the community of Finley and surrounds has gotten right behind the STREUfex facility and takes great pleasure in the fact that their product is now distributed throughout Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore.

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
First Season Sires 2010 COUBERTIN
Bay, 2005 Redoute’s Choice – Circles Of Gold (Marscay) Standing: Greta West Stud,VIC Ph: (03) 5727 6243 2010 fee: $4,400 (incl gst)
The fourth son of the grand mare Circles Of Gold to head to stud, this lightly raced bay didn’t reach the heights of his older brothers but trainer Tony Vasil always thought he had ability. “He was slow to mature and didn’t show the turn of foot of Elvstroem and Haradasun – but he is a better mover than those two.”
Twice a winner from seven starts, Coubertin – named after Baron de Coubertin, father of the modern Olympics, is a son of Redoute’s Choice – sire of 59 stakes winners and an emerging sire of sires (Stratum, Snitzel, Not A Single Doubt, Bradbury’s Luck, etc). Standing at 16.1hh, Coubertin
is from a family that just keeps producing high class gallopers – its current star the dual Gr.1 winning sprinter/miler Starspangledbanner.

An early maturing high class sprinter/miler – just the sort of stallion who succeeds in the tough Australian market – this eye-catching chestnut is described by owner Damian White as “an imposing horse.” “He had plenty of grit and I believe he will be warmly received by local breeders.” A Gr.3 winner at two and Gr.1 placed at three, Globetrotter was unplaced (a fourth) only

once in six starts and he was a versatile and adaptable galloper who really knew how to find the line – winning three races from 1200m to 1800m. A member of the flourishing Mr Prospector sire line via the great Machiavellian and the wildly successful Street Cry (last season Australia’s fourth most expensive stallion),
Globetrotter hails from a prolific black type family – his dam a half sister to the stakes winners Snow Cone and Devotion Unbridled out of the stakes winning mare Icy Warning.
FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
Part 1
Kristen Manning looks at the new boys in town. MANHATTAN RAIN
Bay, 2006 Encosta de Lago – Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad) Standing: Arrowfield Stud, NSW Ph: (02) 9223 8277 2010 fee: $TBA
They don’t come much better bred – son of a champion stallion (Australia’s most expensive), half brother to another (the second dearest). Encosta de Lago’s third Gr.1 son to stud after Delago Brom and Northern Meteor, Manhattan Rain was one of last season’s best two-year-olds. At his third start taking out the Skyline Stakes-Gr.3, he was right in the thick of things in all three legs of the Sydney juvenile triple crown – winning the Sires’ Produce
Stakes-Gr.1 and placing in the Champagne StakesGr.1 and the Golden Slipper-Gr.1. Taking on the topliners again at three, Manhattan Rain was third in the Caulfield Guineas-Gr.1 and a brave second to So You Think in the W.S Cox Plate. One of Encosta de Lago’s 64 stakes winners and 16 Gr.1 winners, Manhattan Rain is his dam’s third Gr.1 winner after Redoute’s Choice (59 stakes
winners) and Platinum Scissors. A descendant of the famed matriarch Best In Show, he can count amongst his relations the successful stallions Hurricane Sky, Umatilla, Try My Best, El Gran Senor and Spinning World.
O’LONHRO
Brown, 2005 Lonhro – Mamzelle Pedrille (Zoffany USA) Standing: Larneuk Stud,VIC 2010 fee: $9,900 (incl gst)
Ph: (03) 5790 3204
Described by trainer Wayne Hawkes as “definitely a Gr.1 horse,” the good looking O’Lonhro raced just nine times – winning three races and twice finishing runner up. A $220,000 Magic Millions yearling who quickly struck form, he won his first two starts and rose quickly through the grades – splitting Trusting and Mr Baritone in the Warwick Stakes-Gr.2 before winning the Chelmsford Stakes-
Gr.2 in easy style from Miss Marielle and Triple Honour. He won that race, one which his own sire won twice, in race record time. Built very much in the mould of his sire, O’Lonhro is to date Lonhro’s second best performed son after the flying Denman. His dam is the seven times stakes winner Mamzelle Pedrille closely
related to the retired speedster I Am Invincible. This is a family that really runs – O’Lonhro’s first four dams producing 25 runners – 19 winners of 74 races.
