The latest fashion? It’s all in the terminology … If you asked anyone who Australia’s best sprinter is, the answer would be Aiden O’Brien’s chestnut cheetah, Starspangledbanner. Currently the darling of two hemispheres, Starspangledbanner is flying high following victories in both the Golden Jubilee and July Cup and universally regarded the fastest horse on terra firma. But as for the best sprinter IN Australia… well, that’s a horse of a whole different colour. Bay or brown actually. But is Hay List ready to step up to the plate?

R

ARELY HAS A GROUP THREE registered such interest. Normally a race of such status – particularly on a program featuring a Group One – would register just below simmer on the Richter scale. A cursory few paragraphs from the second stringer. However, Hay List’s eruption in the WJ Healy Stakes at Eagle Farm on 26 June ensured John McNair’s newcomer blew any opposition from >> the back page.

It was surely some performance: “A new star of the turf” said AAP, “Ultra-Impressive” ANZ decreed, “Something Special” claimed the Sunday Telegraph. And while we’ve all been guilty of giving the Thesaurus a solid work out when something good this way comes, our endeavours are no match for the working over Hay List dispensed his rivals in the Healy. Allowed to roll to the lead early in the piece, Hay List put in a command performance, belittling what was a better than average field to win by five lengths in race record time of 1:08.7 for the 1200m … just 0.6 seconds outside the 10 year old course record. “Coulda won by eight,” according to jockey Chris Munce who, with a host of Group One sprint victories under his belt

– including Dance Hero and Spark of Life – is not exactly prone to rash statements: “I’ll go anywhere to ride him.”

assignment on the east coast saw him run second in the June Stakes-LR over 1100m at Randwick.

“WHILE WE’VE ALL BEEN GUILTY OF GIVING THE THESAURUS A SOLID WORK OUT WHEN SOMETHING GOOD THIS WAY COMES, OUR ENDEAVOURS ARE NO MATCH FOR THE WORKING OVER HAY LIST DISPENSED HIS RIVALS IN THE HEALY”

Thing is, we knew so little about this horse prior to the Healy. He’d had 10 starts leading up to Eagle Farm and won eight of them. Each of the eight victories were notched up in his home town – Perth – while his first

And yes, he started favourite in the Healy – sent out a $3 pick – but hardly Ajax odds if he’s the new messiah? Is the east so dismissive of form from the other side of the compass? Admittedly, prior to making the trek across >>

the Nullabor, Hay List’s only tilt at black type was the Colonel Reeves-G3 at Ascot where he faded to six of 10 after leading them for home. But previous trainer Jim Taylor never lost faith and has always

felt the gelding was on a fast track to greatness. It was certainly what he expressed to John McNair who now has the budding champ boxed at his Gosford stables. Unlike others who might harbor resentment at losing a neddy of such calibre, Taylor is actually pleased that Hay List has landed at Chez McNair, given that Jim used to ride for John and considers the ex-Sandgroper something of a mentor.

has outlets in a number of prestigious international precincts and has won countless awards for her somewhat innovative style.

Hay List was bred in WA by Terry Davenport who, somewhat wisely, decided to race the horse himself. Even wiser still, he let the missus and kids get in on the act which, given the horse’s meteoric rise, would lend itself to convivial family meal times. And if the name rings a diamante, that’s because Terry is married to fashion guru, Liz Davenport, who has plied her (rag) trade since the 1970s and her label is recognised across the globe. With shops in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, Liz also 16

Daughter Katie (and fellow shareholder) is no stranger to the spotlight either, developing her own line of clothing and is a highly visible and much sought after social commentator come carnival time. It’s quite helpful too given that she has the rare ability to speculate – with some authority – on what’s in the mounting yard and what’s outside it. Hay List is by Statue of Liberty, who by virtue of another speedy son of a gun in Mic Mac, along with the Healy Stakes winner, is now one of Victoria’s most fashionable stallions, covering 156 mares last year from his Eliza Park base. Terry sent Hay List’s mum – Sing Hallelujah – to Statue of Liberty in the spring of 2004, after the mare had produced two foals toWA based stallions.

Conversely, Hay List had barely returned to the mounting yard after the Healy before McNair began heaping accolades on Taylor, declaring much of the credit belonged to his former protégé. Regardless of who is more deserving of accolades for preparation, it’s the ‘delivery’ that had everyone in raptures. Ever since the Healy, speculation has mounted as to future campaigns: spring, autumn … both? >>

It’s not a family that’s overladen with black type – well, not until Hay List came along – but the homebred Sing Hallelujah was a pretty good mare for Terry, winning five in town and more than deserved of a life at stud. Following three successive visits to Delzao,Terry naturally jumped at the chance to return to Statue of Liberty again in 2009 when the Storm Cat stallion shuttled from Japan (via North America due to stringent quarantine conditions). It’s probably safe to suggest that Sing Hallelujah will return to Statue of Liberty this spring as he currently builds another impressive tally of frequent flyer points. Speaking of which, Liz Davenport’s website proudly states that “we frequently ask the question, where do women expect their clothes to take them”. The big question for us though is where will Hay List take Terry and his women?

KATIE & LIZ DAVENPORT WITH SING HALLELUJAH

The Missile Stakes at Randwick on 7 August appears to be a given, but that’s where it gets a bit hazy. There’s talk of the Patinack Classic on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival, there’s also chatter about Hong Kong in December.

Hay List’s biggest problem though might not be how fast he runs, but what he runs on.

It seems McNair is keen on the Melbourne autumn’s holy trinity – Oakleigh Plate, Lightning and Newmarket – with a win in the Lightning likely to Hay List follow in the hoofsteps of Miss Andretti and Scenic Blast, while you don’t have to cast your mind back too far to recall that Starspangledbanner took out this year’s Oakleigh Plate.

“He’s got terribly thin soles and walls in his feet and Jim (Taylor) was fighting a losing battle to get them right,” McNair points out. “Thankfully I’ve got an extremely good farrier.”

Unfortunately, hoof problems have plagued his career to date … hence only 11 starts for the newly minted five year old.

And, so it seems, an extremely good racehorse! Photography by Bruno Cannatelli

MARK

KAVANAG Striking while the iron’s hot Mark Kavanagh is pretty lucky. It really only took him the best part of two decades to become an overnight success …

M

ARK KAVANAGH STARTED TRAINING HORSES back in 1991, but even before that he’d been a pretty good jumps jockey, winning around 100 races in a 12 year span.

He had a fair following in South Australia too, but when – as Mark so quaintly relates in a magazine article – “I put my balls on the line” by setting up a training stable at Mt Gambier, he was just another face in the crowd. It’s not that he didn’t have some good days from the kick: indeed, he won the South East Trainers’ premiership in his first season and it wasn’t long before the crown jewels were again in jeopardy by establishing a ‘satellite’ stable in Adelaide. A healthy dose of self belief is required for any tight rope act and Mark was certainly bolstered by a steady flow of winners >> 22

… always prosperous for a business where loyalty is often a fluid commodity. Around four years in, a horse called Red Hope did his stocks no harm, winning 20 races and over half a million after George Hanlon had told owners the neddy wouldn’t cut the mustard. Still, up until around five years ago, Mark was more likely to garner a headline for running naked down the Flemington straight than whatever his horses had achieved on that hallowed turf. But then the tide started to turn: Mark notched up his first Group One winner in the 2004 South Australian Derby with Hard to Get and another was registered a year later with Undoubtedly in the Blue Diamond. This may well have been the turning point. Mark had selected the son of Redoute’s Choice at the 2004 Adelaide Magic Millions, forking out $190,000 for the youngster … almost double what he had previously paid for

a sale horse (and it’s worth remembering that, at that point of time, Redoute’s Choice was far from the superstar he is today and the 190 large was the most paid for Redoute’s in Adelaide up until that time). Please refer to earlier mention of cojones! Yet, in all fairness, it was the spring of ’07 that MA Kavanagh really put himself on the map. After setting up stables at Flemington in March of that (yes, the anatomy got another good work out), Mark began to compile a VERY impressive Group One resume: the Queen of the Turf in Sydney with Divine Madonna, Turnbull Stakes with Devil Moon, the Toorak and Yalumba with Divine Madonna and Maldivian respectively and, finally, a fourth Group One to Divine Madonna in the Myer Classic on Derby Day.

HE WON BY THIS MUCH

Divine Madonna was also purchased by Mark at the 2004 Adelaide MM for $82,500, promptly putting his wife Isobel in for a share. The Hurricane Sky mare went on to win over $2 million and was subsequently sold to Darley as a broodmare prospect for $2.7 million. Mark’s biggest fan – little wonder why – Isobel originally toiled in the stables alongside hubby but is now the full-time business manager, while their sons Levi and Sam are also actively involved. Levi, with a commerce degree under his belt, is the stable’s racing and bloodstock manager, while Sam – after a stint in England working with Peter Chappel-Hyam – looks after the Morphettville operation.

CUP DAY MEDIA CRUNCH

any budding trainer, but to be hit with all of that in the space of just over a fortnight would be earth shattering. Yet here he is, in the midst of a huge media throng, fielding a thousand questions about how the kid who lived next door to Bart Cummings has just won the Melbourne Cup. From an industry standpoint though, the best thing about Mark Kavanagh is not a Melbourne Cup, or a Cox Plate. It’s not his admirable quality of dragging himself from obscurity to a major player on racing’s biggest stage and it’s not because he’s a good bloke. Ironically, Mark’s greatest strength has largely been clouded by his greatest triumphs: his incredible strike rate. Perhaps the best illustration of that is on Melbourne Cup day, amidst all the Shocking

fanfare, the Kavanagh stable also produced a treble at Morphettville. But we’re not isolating 3 November 2009 … it’s a strike rate that runs year round. In Melbourne, where Peter Moody has broken a Freedman/ Hayes stranglehold that stretches back to 1977, Mark currently sits fifth on the trainers’ premiership but with a far superior batting average: 23.07% - the only trainer in the 20s. It gets even better in Adelaide where he is about to wrest the premiership from the Hayes family – unthinkable until recently – with a winners to runners percentage of 27.0 … the next closest being 19.6%. Clearly, for Mark Kavanagh, racing is more than suiting up for the big days. Photography by Bruno Cannatelli

Perfect Pair for Pregnancy Help ensure your mare is provided with essential vitamins and minerals required for optimum reproductive efficiency and proper foetal development.

FOR LATE PREGNANT MARES USE CELL-GROW®:

FOR DRY MARES USE E-Se SUPPLETS™:

Heavily pregnant mares need an assured intake of essential trace-minerals and vitamins. As the unborn foal doubles in size in the third trimester, it needs to store adequate copper, zinc, selenium, iron and vitamins A and E in its liver as a reserve for use during the first 2 months of life. Daily supplementation of Cell-Grow® provides bone minerals, all essential traceminerals and vitamins in late pregnancy and lactation. Cell-Grow’s innovative 3 Supplet® pellet blend eliminates sift-out, dust and nutrient interaction – common problems with powdered supplements.

Low dietary intake of phosphorus, selenium, Vitamin A and Vitamin E has been associated with reduced fertility and conception rates. A daily supplement of E-Se Supplets™ containing organic selenium and Vitamin E will correct low or inadequate levels and help ensure optimum fertility. E-Se Supplets™ is the world’s only no-waste Vitamin E and organic selenium pellet. A 1.4kg pack provides 100 doses – enough for 3 mares for a month prior to sending them to stud.

You’ll be glad you made the change!

GLEESON’S Phoenix is on the rise

Not that there’s any cloning involved. Hell no … the closest Damien ever got to opening the bat for Australia was sitting in Bay 13 at the MCG.

the famous Bhima Stud in NSW’s Hunter Valley, looking after the blindingly fast and highly influential Star Kingdom stallion, Biscay. Growing up in Scone, Damien had a stint in England before eventually heading south to Victoria, where he undertook the Glenormiston College course of breeding management and, subsequently, spent some time at Stockwell Stud – arguably the garden state’s most successful nursery. After a while though, Damien decided to stake out his own plot: nothing too big, nothing delusional … just a neat, manageable property on which he could maintain the hands on approach that has become his hallmark.

That said, you could assert – with a reasonable amount of confidence – that Damien has forgotten more about horse care than his ‘double’ would ever know. Then, that would be the case for a lot of people out there. After all, Damien has been at the caper for a long time … his grandfather was a trainer, while his dad – Peter – was stud manager for 30

www.tracktotrack.com

Thus, Phoenix Broodmare Farm evolved from the fertile plains of Euroa in North East Victoria … some 380 acres of prime real estate in the heart of breeding country. From there Damien has established

quite a niche, given that Phoenix Broodmare Farm is now highly regarded for the professionalism of its horse care and as a walk in facility (with major stud farms just minutes away). “I purchased the property around 15 years ago and we keep a small number of permanent mares on behalf of clients,” Damien points out.“The intention has always been to keep numbers to a minimum to ensure first class care while ever they on the property. “We rug all the foals and handle them from the outset. I’m a firm believer that it all starts from day one for the babies.”

We rug all the foals and handle them from the outset. I’m a firm believer that it all starts from day one for the babies.

W

E RECKON THAT Damien Gleeson is a ‘dead spitter’ for former Test cricketer Justin Langer.

They certainly must be doing something right given that Phoenix is regularly acclaimed for the quality of yearlings it consigns to both the Melbourne Premier and Autumn yearling sales each year. “Once again, we don’t seek out large numbers: our yearling preparation is

STUD PROFILE

S GLEE primarily a service for permanent clients.” Damien is, however, quick to point out that he’s far from being a one man band. “I’m really blessed in terms of professional services … all our vet work is done through the Goulburn Valley Equine Clinic and Gus McKinnon – one of the world’s most knowledgeable reproductive vets – is on the farm every day during the breeding season. “Our farrier Clive Allen trims the foals’ feet every month and closely monitors their progress, while chiropractor Ian Bidstrup is terrific with problem mares and he’s also very watchful of newborn foals.” Damien Gleeson is immensely proud of his handiwork and the reputation built over the past

decade and a half, but you get a sense that he’s not totally driven by the racetrack achievements of farm ‘graduates’ … that the Holy Grail is not a Melbourne Cup or Golden Slipper winner which first saw the light of day on Phoenix pasture.

“We’re totally chemical free and don’t do any spraying … just use natural fertilizers. We mulch all the weeds and my partner, Wendy, has recently organised a tractor from North America that does composting. “The funny thing is, while the c o m mu n i t y is becoming much more aware of the environment – and, accordingly, more studs are coming on board in regards to safer levels of farm management and what t h e y ’r e spraying – it’s not actually some great new invention. “My father also used to run cropping farms and he would always get in my ear as a kid and stress the importance of ‘chemical free’.

In fact, for now – as much as anything – Damien is enthusiastically pursuing his ‘clean green’ policy at Phoenix, ensuring that no herbicides or insecticides are used on his environmentally friendly property.

“Dad’s now in his eighties and when I mentioned to him about the direction we were taking at Phoenix, I copped the old ‘what have I been telling you about all these years’ routine,” Damien laughs.

So, does this mean Damien is now a card carrying member of the Bob Brown Fan Club?

“All I know is that it’s working: injections and the use of antibiotics has dropped and horses on the property – mares, foals, yearlings – are all much, much healthier.

“People are really starting to become much more aware and adopting safer practices in terms of pasture management.

“I couldn’t be happier …” (Not that he’d knock back a Melbourne Cup winner!) www.tracktotrack.com

INDUSTRY PROFILE

FRANK TAGG Living the dream Whether it’s Golden Arches or Circles Of Gold, Frank Tagg has the Midas Touch. A highly successful businessman and major industry player, Frank is now converting the spoils of his toil into a lifestyle to which the vast majority of us would aspire. Frank Tagg IS the Australian dream.

F

RANK TAGG – IT would appear – has got his second wind. That’s not to say he’s had a breather at the 800 while the others caught up … more the fact that he’s still going full stride when most blokes of 61 are looking to take a seat.

Joseph (4) and Vincent (2), while there is also Scott (37), Lisa (33) and three grandkids from his first marriage. And, just to fill in all that spare time, Frank has a burgeoning racing and breeding ‘stable’ that teeters between passionate hobby and flourishing business.

As the owner of the McDonalds restaurant at Kirawee, near Sydney’s southern beaches, Frank still heads in to work five or six days a week, but the difference is that it’s not because he has to … it’s because he wants to. Loves it in fact.

Sure, it would be easy for us to gaze over the mounting yard fence and envy Frank’s success, but it’s worth noting that the voluminous silverware in his trophy cabinet wasn’t preceded by a silver spoon.

Thing is, Frank has several other reasons to go at life as hard as he does: he and wife, Sally, have three young boys – Patrick (8),

Frank actually kicked off as a postage clerk for Westpac when he was 15, eventually ending up in corporate lending and learning >>

some invaluable lessons along the way: “Banking was terrific … it really gave me a great insight into dealing with people.” After 12 years at Westpac, Frank took a giant leap into the unknown by becoming one of the first McDonalds franchisees in Australia. Now, for those of you who grew up on a staple of two all beef patties with special sauce on a sesame seed bun, there could be a tendency to believe that owning a Maccas is a license to print money. However, in the early days, nothing could be further from the truth. Admittedly, in the 70s there wasn’t the ‘take away’ competition there is currently: you maybe had a KFC a suburb or two away, the Chinese restaurant or local milk bar for fish and chips on a Friday night, but was that about it.

yes, you could get southern fried chicken and fish and chips – not to mention ye olde quarter pounders (yours truly did put Frank’s two older kids through college) – but as for a crispy chicken Caesar salad with your Espresso Pronto latte … forgeddaboutit! Frank soon got used to working 18 hours a day, seven days a week but the hard yakka eventually paid dividends. In the ensuing decades, Frank has owned six McDonalds franchises, the most being four at any one time. He has now scaled it back to just the Kirawee restaurant and recently sold his initial franchise at Sylvania to a couple who had worked for him in 1980 when he owned the Sans Souci outlet. Frank is justifiably proud of the team around him and attributes much of his success to an ability to surround himself with good people.

Still, the general ethos of 70s Australia was more slow-burner- Indeed, his operations manager on-the-stove than fast-food-on- has been with him for 31 years, the store the-road and manager for McDonalds 27 years and ownership – Little did Frank know community then – was relations no express to it then, but Circles officer for 31 success. of Gold would years. serving up hash browns: “I still love that side of the business”. Asked to point out the biggest milestones – McDonalds-wise – during his time (which pretty much translates to the chain’s history in Australia), Frank cites ‘healthier choices’ and ‘community service’. “It’s one thing listening to people, but then you have to do something about it. I’m proud of what we’ve contributed in terms of healthier meal options and other initiatives undertaken to benefit the community at large.” Frank has – albeit in a more

esoteric fashion – also given plenty back to the community through ownership of two of Australia’s finest racehorses in the past decade: Elvstroem and Haradasun. Real crowd favourites who, between them, won eight Group Ones – doing us proud both at home and abroad. Interested in the thoroughbred industry from an early age – “I’ve always been fascinated by breeding” – Frank first got involved as an owner back in the late 70s, ironically through Bob Lapointe, the Canadian entrepreneur who brought both KFC and Pizza Hut to Australia.

INDUSTRY PROFILE

“I went into a syndicate of around 40 horses, owning a relatively small share. It was in those early days with Bob (Lapointe) and (trainer) Brian Mayfield-Smith.” (Mayfield-Smith would eventually topple the legendary TJ Smith from his lofty perch, wresting the 1985-86 Sydney Trainers’ Premiership from Smith for the first time in 33 years). However, with increased fiscal freedom, Frank picked up the pace in the 1990s and began owning horses outright, or at least a major shareholding.

One of those purchases was the wonderful Marscay mare, Circles of Gold (syndicated to four of his McDonalds’ mates) who gave Frank his first taste of Group One success when she won the 1995 AJC Oaks at Randwick and then finished a brilliant (“heart stopping”) second behind Arctic Scent in the Caulfield Cup. Little did Frank know it then, but Circles of Gold would continue to give he and his partners (Garry and Leone Moffitt and Frank and Marie Meduri) the ride of their life: the momentum from which has spanned 15 years and three continents Circles of >>

INDUSTRY PROFILE

Gold was thus named given that she’s out of the Kiwi mare, Olympic Aim and Frank has largely stuck with the sporting sobriquet system. While Circle of Gold’s first two foals didn’t exactly set the world on fire, her Danehill colt, Elvstroem, fired up global imagination with his stellar career realising five Group One victories, over $5.6 million in stakes and a blossoming career at stud. Moreover, Elvstroem would make up for his mother’s close defeat in the Caulfield Cup eight years earlier by capturing the 2004 version of the time honoured event. And, on a warm March night on the other side of the world, Frank’s boy would do Australia proud by trouncing the world elite in the Dubai Duty Free at Nad El Sheba (and still the only Australasian horse to win on this night of nights). Elvstroem is named after Denmark’s most famous Olympian, yachtsman Paul Elvstrom (the ‘e’ was added to coincide with the English translation). Frank followed the trend for Elvstroem’s year younger full sister, Hveger, again contacting the Danish Olympic Committee for the inside oil. Ragnhild Hveger set 33 world records in swimming but the closest she came to gold was a silver at the 1936 Olympics. Like her namesake, Hveger only managed ‘silver’ with a second in the SAJC Oaks-G2 (and third in the Australasian Oaks-G1), but may yet stand WORLD BEATER ELVSTROEM

vicariously on the top step with her daughter Valdemoro, who finished a close up second to Faint Perfume in last year’s Crown Oaks-G1 at Flemington after being carted wide in the run home, plus another second to Faint Perfume in the Storm Queen-G1. After three successive visits to Danehill, Circles of Gold shifted up a box or two at Coolmore and was covered by Fusaichi Pegasus, seeing a consequent departure from recognising Danish Olympians. Still, the Fu Peg’s homage to eastern culture – Haradasun – lost nothing by the switch and went on to win a Doncaster, a George Ryder and, significantly, the Queen Anne Stakes-G1 at Royal Ascot. Some $2.7 million in stakes and a multi, multimillion dollar syndication deal

later (albeit not $60 million as repor ted!), Haradasun is now firmly ensconced at Coolmore Stud in the Hunter Valley.

Coolmore and Greta West (which stands multiple winner and first season sire Coubertin, a Redoute’s Choice half brother to Elvstroem and Haradasun).

This is one amazing family (Starspangledbanner’s granddam, National Song, is a half sister to Olympic Aim) and Frank – the passionate breeder – is over the moon by playing his role in being part of this emerging thoroughbred dynasty.

“But I’m not much of a punter … I remember having a big bet on Imperial Baron in the 1986 Golden Slipper (finishing third behind Bounding Away) but even with all the inside information I usually steer clear of the bookies.

“To start off with a filly (Circles of Gold) that gives you so much joy on the racetrack is tremendous and, now, she has not only produced Group One winners in her own right, but her daughters are leaving good horses too.

“I get down in the mouth enough as it is when my horse gets beaten,” Frank laughs. “I prefer to have a day at the races with Sally and some friends and just chuck a couple of hundred dollars on the table to bet on trifectas and doubles.”

“I’ve currently got around 25 mares which are split between Blue Gum (the Victorian nursery which stands Elvstroem),

good looking son of the speed influence Rory’s Jester – Golden Slipper winning sire of 72 stakes winners, Seidnazar hit the track running. Just beaten in Listed company as a spring two-year-old, the big bay quickly struck winning form – second up taking out the Listed St Albans Stakes on Cox Plate Day, leading throughout. Second in the Gr.2 Maribyrnong Plate at his third and final spring outing, Seidnazar was competitive with the best of his age over the summer and autumn – third in a Gr.3 Blue

Diamond Preview on his way to a gutsy second in the Gr.1 Blue Diamond. Also third in the Gr.2 Pago Pago Stakes at Rosehill, Seidnazar did not have much of a break but held his form to the end of the season with a game third against the older horses in the Gr.3 Dermody Stakes at Cheltenham. With his first crop the two-yearolds of this season, Seidnazar has been represented by two promising winners – Derippa twice successful and seen racing away with the Wellington Boot in early April – and Moveaside finishing on strongly to salute at his Canberra debut in mid June.

Also sire of the Eagle Farm runner up Nastro Blu and the well regarded New Zealander Juzchillin, Seidnazar is a son of the classy race mare Dangerous Seam. A daughter of the excellent broodmare sire Straight Strike, Dangerous Seam won five races including the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes and the Listed Keith Mackay Stakes. She has fared nicely at stud, the speed Listed winning two-year-old Real Jester also siring handy winners. Raced by Banchory Thoroughbreds, Seidnazar stood his first four seasons in New South Wales but this year makes his Queensland debut – looking to be an ideal QTIS type stallion. FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010

First Season Sires 2010

Part 5

Kristen Manning looks at the new boys in town. AMADEUS WOLF (GB)

Bay, 2003 Mozart (IRE) – Rachelle (IRE) (Mark Of Esteem IRE) Standing: Chatswood Stud,VIC Ph: (03) 5799 0560 2010 fee: $11,000 (incl gst) www.chatswoodstud.com.au

The prestigious Middle Park Stakes boasts a stellar honour roll and 2005 winner Amadeus Wolf is the first son of the brilliant but illfated Mozart to stand in Australia. A fast two-year-old also won the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes, Amadeus Wolf went on with the job as an older horse, at three finishing runner up in three Gr.1 races and at four taking out the Gr.2 Duke Of York Stakes – defeating four Gr.1 winners.

His sire Mozart, a son of Danehill, was an outstanding sprinter, winner of the Gr.1 July Cup and the Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes. Sadly he died during his very first season at stud but he has made his mark – leaving 57 winners including eight stakes winners. His best son, Amadeus Wolf is out of a daughter of the Italian stakes winner Rose Violet, half sister to the Gr.3 winning successful stallion

Storm Creek (16 stakes winners). Other members of this family include the US Champion Older Mare North Sider and the stakes winners Raft Trip, Fircroft, Storm In May, Salar Violet, Zanjero and Victory Lap.

BUSHRANGER (IRE)

Bay, 2006 Danetime (IRE) – Danz Danz (GB) (Efisio GB) Standing: Eliza Park,VIC Ph: (03) 5428 5168 2010 fee: $11,000 (incl gst) www.elizapark.com.au

Breaking the course record when taking out the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes, one of the UK’s major juvenile contests, Bushranger is one of the classiest of Victoria’s shuttlers this spring. Also winner of the Gr.1 Prix Morny at Deauville – this time in race record time, Bushranger was four times successful from ten starts – the Gr.3 Anglesey Stakes at The Curragh also on his resume. Crowned the English and French Champion 2Y0 of 2008, Bushranger

is a son of the stakes winning Danehill stallion Danetime who proved a prolific source of winners – siring 325 winners (an excellent strike rate of 63.5%) including 27 stakes winners. Standing just three seasons in Australia (dying in the spring of 2005), Danetime did a good job in WA – siring such high class performers as Megatic, Roman Time, Dark Target, So Secret and Danebeela. Meanwhile in the

northern hemisphere he is also sire of the French Champion 2Y0 Myboycharlie. Bred on a 3 X 4 cross of Danzig, Bushranger hails from the family of the Gr.1 winners Flying Continental, Night Off and Super Moment.

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010

First Season Sires 2010 Part 5 cont. DENMAN

Brown, 2006 Lonhro – Peach (Vain) Standing: Darley, NSW Ph: (02) 6543 9000 2010 fee: $38,500 (incl gst) www.darley.com.au

Like his sire Lonhro and grandsire Octagonal before him, Denman was a racehorse who really knew how to find the line, boasting an outstanding winning strike rate – successful at nine of his 12 starts. Amassing over $1.2 million in stakes, Denman won three in a row at two in Victoria and in Sydney at three was unstoppable – taking out the Gr.3 Run To The Rose, the Gr.1 Golden Rose and the Gr.2 Stan Fox Stakes. Beaten favourite in the Caulfield

Guineas although not far away in what proved to be a great form race with Starspangledbanner the winner, Denman was back to his best the following summer – again winning three in a row. The Listed Zeditave Stakes, the Listed Wellington R.C Stakes and the Gr.2 D’Urban Stakes were added to Denman’s tally before he headed to the UK where unfortunately he did not make it

to the track. One of his sire’s 14 stakes winners, Denman is a half brother to the Gr.1 winning juvenile Preserve and the Listed winner Rio Osa from the family of the big race winners Dark Eclipse, Taj Rossi, Tributes, God’s Own and Saintly.

DUPORTH

Bay/brown, 2005 Red Ransom (USA) – Staging (Success Express USA) Standing: Kitchwin Hills, NSW Ph: (02) 6545 8065 2010 fee: $22,000 (incl gst) www.kitchwin.com.au

The late Red Ransom (96 stakes winners) has enjoyed a great resurgence in recent times, his current star Typhoon Tracy keeping his name in the headlines. And he has several nice sons going to stud this year, including the well related Duporth. A son of the multiple Group winning Success Express mare Staging, also dam of the Gr.1 winning juvenile Excites and the dual Gr.2 winner Tickets, Duporth retires as the winner of three races and over $1.1 million in stakes.

56

www.tracktotrack.com

Competitive with the country’s best two-yearolds, Duporth came into his own at three – winning the Gr.3 San Domenico Stakes first up and two starts later the Gr.2 Golden Rose. Later in the season beating the older horses (Apache Cat third) in the Gr.1 BTC Cup, Duporth ensured his value as a stallion prospect. As well as being a sibling to two Group winners, Duporth

can boast amongst his close relations the Gr.1 winners Mannerism and Always Welcome and the stakes winners Dashing Image, Millennium Diamond, River Don, Dandify and Manner Hill. Ancestress of this prolific family is the great matriarch Teppo.

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010

I AM INVINCIBLE

Bay, 2004 Invincible Spirit (IRE) – Cannarelle (Canny Lad) Standing: Yarraman Park, NSW Ph: (02) 6545 1961 2010 fee: $11,000 (incl gst) www.yarramanpark.com.au

A horse we never really got to see the best of, I Am Invincible nevertheless did win five of his 13 starts, amassing over $270,000 in stakes and putting on display his superior turn of foot over sprinting trips. Word around the traps early was that he was one of Sydney’s most gifted two-year-olds – a five length trial win at Warwick Farm followed by a third to Forensics at debut in the Gr.3 Kindergarten Stakes. Sparingly raced from thereon, I Am Invincible had just the one start

at three but at four really shone – in March last year leading throughout to win over 1000m at Caulfield by four lengths before a Gr.3 victory in the D.C McKay Stakes at Morphettville. Also winner of the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes and a gallant second to Takeover Target in the Gr.1 Goodwood, I Am Invincible is one of 37 stakes winners sired by the Gr.1 Haydock Sprint Cup winning Green Desert stallion Invincible Spirit.

A descendant of the famed matriarch Chelandry, I Am Invincible is out of the Canny Lad mare Cannarelle whose dam is a half sister to the triple Group winner Mamzelle Pedrille, dam of the Gr.2 Chelmsford Stakes winner O’Lonhro.

SUPER KID

Bay, 1999 Gaius (IRE) – Pompeii Pride (NZ) (Pompeii Court USA) Standing: Lindsay Park Stud, SA Ph: 64 7 827 665 2010 fee: FOA www.lindsaypark.com.au

A tough galloper who campaigned well in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, Super Kid retires to stud as a triple millionaire. Kicking off his career in New Zealand, Super Kid was an easy winner of the Gr.3 Waikato Guineas before a Gr.1 third in the Bayer Classic. Exported to Hong Kong, he proved one of that competitive racing arena’s best with three wins at the elite level – the Hong Kong Champions and Chater Cup, the Hong Kong Gold Cup and the Stewards Cup.

Making his way to Australia in between two successful Hong Kong stints, Super Kid was second to stablemate Barely A Moment in two Gr.1 races and not disgraced when seventh in Makybe Diva’s W.S Cox Plate. Super Kid is a son of Gaius, a Gr.2 winner in Italy and New Zealand and the sire of 138 winners with an excellent strike rate of 63.3%. Another five of his progeny are stakes winners including the Gr.1

NZ Derby winner Cavallieri. A descendant of the famed matriarch Chelandry, Super Kid can count amongst his relations the Gr.1 sprinter/miler Blockbuster and the Group winners Pigalle, Live In Vain and Snort.
