Every stud was waiting to see what the others would do before making a move. After all, general consensus was that stallion fees should drop by 30-40% on last year, in line with a falling yearling sale market.

But the ‘wait’ is no different than that of previous years. They’re always announced around Easter, I just meant that opinions on how much they should drop service fees have been bandied around since January - hence, making the announcements seem later than usual.

Hussonet w a s dropped to $71,500 – an almost 50% cut on 2008. While it largely reflects the market – and is therefore prudent in these tough times – it’s also fairly bold and will force a lot of stud farms into following suit. Vinery has, however, taken a different tack. Two of its top notchers in Red Ransom ($66,000) and Testa Rossa ($38,500) remain unchanged, while More Than Ready – sire of the last two Golden Slipper winners has jumped from $110,000 to $148,500. Alternatively, stallions in Vinery’s sub $15k bracket have dropped considerably which, arguably, will help the people who need it most. There should be a flood of fees being announced over the next couple of weeks and will make for interesting reading. Personally, I think a lot of people will be happy to just leave Easter behind and get on with the tasks at hand. Next issue is Track To Track’s 50th and we plan on celebrating by making a number of special offers to both readers and advertisers. There will also be an in-depth feature on ‘How to Buy a Racehorse’, covering the costs involved and a wealth of information on syndications. Make sure you join us! Best wishes,

UCK’S A FORTUNE in racing and Darrell Rogers would be the first to admit it.

With over 20 years involvement in the sport of kings and a keen horseman, Darrell lobbed at the Brisbane Bloodstock sale in 2006 with two prospective yearling purchases in mind. He’d done his homework – pored over pedigrees, put leather to pavement – and, by the time the lights went up, had whittled his choices to Lots 1 and 145. Lot 1 was an Arena colt out of the stakeswinner Preferential 10

and Darrell liked the look of him – “not tall, but very well conformed and muscular”. Darrell went to $14,500 before pulling out, only to see the colt knocked down for $15,000. C’est la vie. Darrell had kept his powder dry and could now concentrate on 145, a “tall, rawboned yearling by Secret Savings with a 3 x 3 Mr Prospector cross”. “I was impressed from the moment I saw him,” Darrell recalls. “You hear people talk about a horse having a good eye but you don’t fully understand until you see it first hand.

“He was the most arrogant horse I’d ever laid eyes on … he’d watch everything that was going on around him. “I had him out for inspections on three or four occasions and went back to his stall around 10 times. “I thought the Secret Savings side of things would push his price up a bit, but realised I had a few things working in my favour. “Firstly, he was coming into the ring only three lots from the end and there were very few people left at the sale. Secondly, his dam – the American mare Rapid Serve – was unraced and hadn’t had anything to the track.

PROUDLY SPONSORED BY

“Finally, he was a bit underdone coming into the sale. I found out later that he’d had a niggling cough as a weanling and wasn’t doing too well in the paddock. It was evidently a last minute decision to keep him in the sale.” Still, Darrell was quite surprised when bidding stalled following his $6,000 salvo, rejoicing his good fortune as the proud new owner of an arrogant, slightly underdone Secret Savings colt. Deciding to name his neddy Swiss Ace (i.e. Secret Savings, as in Swiss bank accounts, and the Ace from Rapid Serve) the colt was placed with Sunshine Coast trainer Mick Mair. Formerly a NSW bush jockey, a work rider at Rosehill and horse breaker at Warwick Farm, laidback Mick shifted to Queensland in the mid 80s and jokingly tells people that he “came up here with very little and have most of it left”. Albeit self deprecating, there are few better plying their trade: Mick’s honour roll includes Burglar of Bamff (37 wins, including a Lord Mayor’s Cup victory over Vo Rogue), Kidman’s Cove, Rode Rouge, Dr Zackary and Latin Quarter (21 wins). Mick and Darrell targeted a 2YO event for the colt at his home track in April 2007. “We weren’t that confident,” Darrell points out and nor were the bookies. “Paying $34 and starting out of barrier 14, he was also showing signs of shin soreness. “He led from start to finish, winning by three lengths in class record time. “We took him to Eagle Farm for his next start and, again, he

led from start to finish. I was pretty happy after the Eagle Farm victory as it had a Brisbane Bloodstock bonus of $7,500 attached to the race. “So, in effect, they’ve paid me $1,500 to buy the horse!” Darrell was keen to tackle the TJ Smith-G1 during the winter carnival but the colt was pretty shinny and was turned out for a spell. Resuming on a bog track in the September, Swiss Ace tasted defeat for the first time when eighth at the Sunshine Coast, but then – in the midst of EI and restriction on travel – the then 3YO reeled off four consecutive wins at the Sunshine Coast, Doomben and Eagle Farm.

again equal to the task. Despite facing the likes of Apache Cat, Vormista, Swick and La Montagna in the BTC Cup – his first tilt at racing’s most elite level – Swiss Ace lost no fans with a stellar third (beaten a length) behind a 7-time Group One winner. Then came the Stradbroke …

DARRELL ROGERS (2ND FROM LEFT) AND THE SWISS ACE CREW

Off the scene for 11 weeks, Swiss Ace got away to his usual blistering start in the Vo Rogue-LR at Doomben but just got nutted on the line by Dirty. Despite both horses breaking Gold Edition’s race record, Darrell was a tad ‘dirty’ in that a black type win makes all the difference for a budding sire. However, by now, Swiss Ace was in full swing, taking out the Chief De Beers Quality-LR at Doomben before becoming, from what we can glean, the only 3YO in the 125 history of the XXXX Gold Weetwood Handicap-LR to win Toowoomba’s showpiece. Stepping up to Group Two level and weight for age in the Sir Byrne Hart Stakes at Eagle Farm a fortnight later, Swiss Ace was

“We truly thought we were a great chance (in the Stradbroke) and then it rained and didn’t stop raining: a lot of people considered he failed in the race, but the horse didn’t fail … I failed him as an owner because I still wasn’t convinced he couldn’t handle the wet, and had good bets on him. “The horse was cruising in front until the home turn but, the harder he tried to go forward, the further he dug in. He didn’t stop trying though.” Given a lengthy spell – some seven months – Darrell and Mick determined a stint in Melbourne would do Swiss Ace (and their bank accounts) the world of good, so the colt, nay entire, was let off the lead in the

Lightning-G1 at Flemington on 31 January. “They sent him out a $51 pick in the Lightning and he put in a superb effort, finishing just 2.5 lengths off the winner and 1.25 panels ahead of Apache Cat. “Had he finished a 2.5 length third instead of seventh, everyone would have said what a great run it was, but he was still sent out at $31 in the Oakleigh Plate.” Ah, the Oakleigh Plate … Darrell was about to get the thrill of a lifetime. Spearing across from the outside barrier (18), Swiss Ace took up his usual position at the front of the pack, but was actually headed by Lucky Secret half way down the straight. But the Caloundra Conqueror wasn’t going to give in without a fight and surged back to get his noggin up on the wire.

Swiss Ace went within a short neck of repeating the dose in the Newmarket Handicap-G1, but after fighting off the challenge from Aichi – who had doggedly matched strides for most of the race – Scenic Blast pinched it with a brilliant run up the inside. The time of 1.08.82 was again indicative of what a great race the Newmarket is: “we have no excuses for coming second … we were beaten by a great horse, but as the record shows we are very evenly matched”. At the time of going to press, Swiss Ace was tackling the Sydney autumn and it would hardly surprise to see this horse tuck a few more Group Ones under his girth. As for Darrell, he can bask in Swiss Ace’s reflected glory and reminisce on how his $6,000 purchase has now won over $850,000, accumulated from 14 of 17 starts. But that’s not the best part – >>

No, the best part is that whatever Swiss Ace does from here on in is a bonus: both on the track and off it. Swiss Ace is a true rarity in that despite his petty cash price, he has a pretty good pedigree and, when he goes to stud, is sure to be very well supported. Particularly if he settles up north. His sire, Secret Savings, produced 17 stakeswinners and while he was no Northern Dancer, his only son at stud in Australia is successful Victorian stallion, Dash For Cash (sire of Bank Robber etc.). On the flip side, Swiss Ace’s dam, Rapid Serve was unraced and eventually sold to Emirates Park by Kentucky’s Sun Valley Mares, but from there up (or

down) life gets very interesting. Rapid Serve’s dam, Tennis Partner is a daughter of Northern Dancer and was also unraced, but has since gone on to produce seven winners (from seven to race) and is a sister to 3-time Group One winner Adjal and half sister to Group One winners Flying Partner and Formidable. Furthermore, a three quarter sister in blood – the Group placed Danseur Fabuleux – is the dam of Group One winners and ‘shuttlers’ Arazi and Noverre. But for now, Darrell is just enjoying the moment: “Swiss Ace is more arrogant today than when we bought him … he waits for people to look at him before entering the saddling enclosure, then he parades around on the toe with his tail straight out behind him. He is a tough, fast horse who never says die.” Onya Darrell.

The yearling Darrell missed out on in Brisbane is now called Political Arena and, as luck would have it, the sale was never settled and the colt was sold to Victorian buyers some eight months later.

HOOFNOTE:

although winning Group Ones could hardly be considered the worst part.

Darrell ended up with a quarter share and hasn’t seen Political Arena since the sale, but it turns out he’s no Swiss Ace, racing on 12 occasions without shaking his maiden status. Who said a virtue!

easter review

NO EA STE R B U NNY Bu t Fi g ure s Stack Up Dean Watt has never been backward in coming forward. In the afterglow of his $1.8 million, sale topping Encosta de Lago purchase, Mr Dynamic Syndications was quick to point out that the same colt would have cost him $3 million at Easter ‘08. 14

www.tracktotrack.com

I

NTERVIEWED ON Racenet TV, Watt indicated that the 30% drop in average was more market correction than doom and gloom: “It (the market) had to come back … last year was a blip as there were three buyers with fairly deep pockets and bigger egos all trying to compete against one another. It was probably an unfair market last year. “If you take that into consideration those blokes aren’t playing it the same way this year, the market has come back. Yeah, everybody can tell you the market is down 30%, but in real

terms it’s not probably down that much because, with the egos out of the way, it’s giving everyone an opportunity.” Vendors, by and large, might not share Watt’s sentiments, but with an 83% clearance rate overall it’s obvious they left delusions of grandeur back home on the farm. Harry Mitchell has seen the highs and lows of Easter and it was only three years ago when his family’s Yarraman Park trifectaed the Southern Hemisphere’s premier auction with sales of $3.0m, $2.6m and $2.3m.

easter review Perhaps in a position to be more philosophical than most, Mitchell was “happy” with the result: “It was hard in spots and the top end was difficult (true enough given that only seven six figure lots were knocked down, compared to 28 in 2008). “However, we achieved a 100% clearance rate. Going forward though, service fees have to be revised.” That observation was a common theme throughout Easter and Mitchell’s thoughts we echoed by that of the biggest spender, Darley’s John Ferguson. Fresh from forking out $7.1m on 15 lots (compared to $19m for 20 lots last year), Ferguson said that in light of market falls north of the equator, Easter had held up very well and was more likely to bounce back quicker than overseas counterparts. But he too followed the Mitchell line, albeit as the public face for international breeding conglomerate, Darley Stud. “I would say that service fees have to follow the market. If breeders are struggling they

can’t breed to good horses … everyone has to have a chance to make money.”

$1.5M MAKYBE DIVA YEARLING

And while most stud farms are still circling, waiting on peers to show their hand, Arrowfield was quick out of the gates, announcing its service fees would be down between 20% to 48% in 2009, including a 40% drop (to $198,000 inc. GST) for headliner, Redoute’s Choice. The majority will follow suit, but if Easter is the benchmark, it’s worth noting that Redoute’s Choice averaged $484,300 ex GST for 50 sold. His service fee when these yearlings were conceived? $275,000 inc. GST. Encosta de Lago averaged $363,622 ex GST for 49 sold – 2006 service fee … $176,000 inc. GST. Anyway, back to the present or at least the very recent past, Easter had its share of highlights to match the economic lowlights. Most notably was the sale of Makybe Diva’s first foal, a strapping colt by Galileo, who was knocked down on day one for $1.5m.

There is quite a deal of synergy in that the colt is to be trained at Flemington – the scene of Makybe Diva’s three Melbourne Cup victories – by Danny O’Brien, while breeder/ owner Tony Santic will retain a 15% share. Speaking

easter review Makybe operation scooped the averages at Easter ‘09: the first time the Geelong based outfit has attained top rung at this sale. Full marks too to Brooklyn Lodge, who consigned two of the million dollar lots – a filly by Redoute’s Choice and a filly by Encosta de Lago. The buying landscape didn’t alter dramatically in terms of order: only the expenditure. Darley ($7.1m), Patinack ($5.8m), Shadwell ($4.2m) and Anthony Cummings ($3.3m), all emptied their pockets, while James Bester ($3.3m) actually spent more on the six yearlings

he bought this time than the half dozen he picked up last year.

ultimately, will have absolutely no bearing on performance.

A notable absentee from the buying bench in 2009 was the Hong Kong Jockey Club, although it hardly made the difference between winning and losing. By the time they pulled up stumps on Tuesday night, $89 million had been spent in pursuit of dreams: somewhere between 2005 and 2006 levels and, all things considered, not too bad a result. In fact, a 30% drop in the price of aspirations is something of a godsend for buyers and,

PENDRAGON

A HORSE WHO WE NEVER SAW THE BEST OF IS PENDRAGON, RESIDENT AT THINK BIG STUD, BURRADOO NSW.

A

G O O D LOOKING bay who caught the eye of Duncan Ramage, buyer for successful owner Dato Tan Chin Nam, at the 2004 Karaka sale – he was secured for $180,000. Trusted to the care of master trainer Bart Cummings, Pendragon really caught the eye at his first start – flashing home from last (blocked for a run) to run second in the Listed Kembla Grange 2Y0 Classic. Freshened for a winter/spring campaign, Pendragon was well supported in a 2Y0 Quality at

18

Rosehill first up but he ran into a future topliner in the shape of Racing To Win. Pendragon was to be placed at his first four outings, second next time out to another future Gr.1 winner Paratroopers and then third to that horse and Racing To Win (God’s Own fourth) in the Listed Golden Rose. Mid September was his turn to shine, Pendragon appreciating a step up in distance to claim the Gr.2 Gloaming Stakes… an easy two length victory. The Gr.1 Spring Champion Stakes was his next assignment

and once again he performed admirably, second to Hotel Grand. To Melbourne where he contested the Gr.2 Norman Robinson Stakes and in a stirring finish with Headturner (later to win the AJC Derby) he prevailed by a short half head. On the heels of the placegetters in Benicio’s VRC Derby, Pendragon didn’t quite see out the trip but he was brave and tough as usual. Sadly it was to be his second last run – tendon problems forcing the early retirement of an exciting prospect with all the right form lines. Pendragon is a member of the

READY TO ROAR prolific Danzig sire line via the English Champion 3Y0 & Older Sprinter Elnadim who stood just two seasons in New Zealand. A Gr.1 winner of the prestigious July Cup at Newmarket, he has fared extremely well at stud – siring 13 stakes winners including the exciting mare Gr.1 mare Culminate. Pendragon is a son of the high class racemare Alacrity, winner of five races including the Gr.1 NZ Oaks, the Gr.2 Sir Tristram Classic and the Gr.3 Royal Stakes. A half sister to the durable stakes winners The Kingfighter (nine wins) and Sympose (12 wins), she hails from a prolific family – one which has already produced a champion stallion. That horse is the Golden Slipper champ Marscay, one of the best members of the Star Kingdom line (sire of 68 stakes winners inclusive of 14 Gr.1 winners) and an enduring influence via his daughters who to date have produced 73 stakes winners including 21 Gr.1 winners. Pendragon’s first crop of foals have impressed all at Think Big Stud, exciting prospects including a half brother to the Caulfield Guineas winner Wonderful World, a son of the stakes placed Authoress, a colt out of a half sister to Super Impose, a granddaughter of the Gr.1 mare Royal Tiara, a filly out of a half sister to the international champ Sun Classique, a grandson of the dual Gr.1 winner Danendri,

a filly out of a half sister to the Doomben Cup winner Akhenaton and a daughter of the Melbourne Cup placegetter Zazabelle. Pendragon served another classy group of mares last year including the dam of the exciting dual stakes winning stayer Banana Man, half sisters to the stakes winner Terrific Taurus, a daughter of the Auckland Cup winner Royal Tiara, a half sister to the tough dual stakes winner Malta, the Gr.3 placed Madame Faubourg, a half sister to the Singapore Gr.3 winner Delusional, a daughter of the 1000 Guineas heroine Inaflury, a half sister to the Gr.3 winner Rhythm and the dam of the stakes placed Katsidis… whilst return visitors included the half sister to Super Impose, the daughter of Danendri and Zazabelle. Also included in his 2008 harem were not where close relations to the Gr.1 winners Magical Miss, Serious Speed, Reward For Effort and Tears I Cry and daughters of the outstanding stallions Red Ransom, Kaapstad, Grosvenor, Danehill, Royal Academy, Zabeel and Palace Music.

TIM MARTIN It’s little wonder that Tim Martin is prepared to chance his arm at yearling sales. Standing firm as bids climb by the hundreds of thousands is not for those who are faint of ticker, but Tim pretty much takes it in his stride: a sure sign of someone with more hits than misses. And why wouldn’t the Rosehill Gardens trainer have faith in his ability?

E E M I N G LY DESTINED to exceed and excel, Tim Martin has been around horses since he

was a nipper.

A typical country kid growing up in NSW’s Hunter region, Tim spent more time on horseback than on his back watching telly. A keen competitor, Tim popped up at rodeos, pony club and agricultural shows. You could say it was in his blood: his uncle, Ron Martin, was a leading trainer in the Hunter & North West for 30 years and, from the age of 10, Tim was helping out around the stable … even riding trackwork. As fate would have it, Uncle Ron got crook and – at 15 – Tim dropped out of school to take over the running of the stable. Fortunately Ron was on the mend after six months, but with no dreams of becoming a Rhodes Scholar, Tim took the other road – to Sydney – leaving behind school in favour of stable life. He hasn’t looked back. Lobbing at Les Bridge’s stables, it was during a golden era for the Randwick trainer and Tim mixed in the right circles: 1987 Melbourne Cup winner Kensei, Slipper hero Sir Dapper, Drawn, Row of Waves … After a couple of years Tim shifted across the road to holy ground – TJ Smith’s Tulloch Lodge.

irongate trainers owner outline report E QUequissage IN NE E AU A U TO

During his stint with the master trainer, Tim continued to hone his skills and, in what was undoubtedly a career highlight to that time, this natural horseman broke in both Star Watch and Comely Girl who finished 1-2 in the 1988 Golden Slipper. Determining it was time to hang out his own shingle, Tim returned to Walcha in 1988 and commenced training in his own right. Although he’d hailed from the bush, it would have been something of a culture shock after mixing it with literally hundreds of horses each day in the big smoke. Kicking off with a team of three, Tim had the auspicious pleasure of training a winner with his first runner. The win was at Armidale, the horse was Arogen Mist. In 1992 Tim shifted to Tamworth and within five years was playing a merry tune, emulating Uncle Ron by becoming the leading Hunter & North West trainer. With four consecutive premierships under his belt and a full stable, Tim again shifted to Sydney, this time with considerably more attached to his resume. But even for a bloke who has spent a lifetime around horses and tracks, the highly competitive Sydney cauldron can be unforgiving and when he landed at Rosehill in 2001, Tim didn’t come with a neon sign. But it didn’t take long for his light

to shine. Marrakesh Express, a Canny Lad horse that Tim had snapped up for $20,000 at the 2000 Sydney Classic Yearling Sale, accompanied his trainer to town and won three in the city – nine overall – and finished off his stellar career with a victory and almost $200,000 in the bank. Tim also came under wider public focus with the gutsy This Manshood. Racing on 66 occasions over a period of almost six years, This Manshood won 16 races – six at stakes level, including the Group Two Hollindale Cup – and ended up just $4,000 off a million bucks in stakes. However, it was the Danehill colt – Exceed And Excel – that really put Tim on the map. What a magnificent horse … winning the Todman Stakes-G2 at two, he really proved his mettle as a spring 3YO when he led throughout to win the Dubai Racing Club Stakes-G1 at Caulfield against the older horses. Six months later, Exceed And Excel defeated the best sprinters in the land by winning the Newmarket Handicap-G1 down the Flemington straight to well and truly etch his name in >>

equine auto trainers report the record books. The subject of a multi-million dollar ‘takeover’ by Darley, Exceed And Excel is now firmly ensconced at stud and currently heads up the Australian second season sires’ chart. A horse like Exceed And Excel is a very, VERY hard act to follow, but the winners emanating from Tim Martin Racing continue in a steady stream. Gonski, Johnny Reb, Langborghini, Midnight City, Stormhill, the lightning quick Murtajil and Group One runnerup Oh Oklahoma all added to the honour roll … written in large black type. Importantly, Tim had initially produced some of his own black type to secure a number of them, putting pen to pad at yearling sales.

TIM MARTIN WITH TYPHOON ZED’S JOCKEY TIM CLARK

Always prepared to travel to ‘place’ his horses, Tim took out the 2007 New Zealand Derby with Redoute’s Dancer who had won a Group Two race a fortnight previously. Currently leading the charge for Tim is a rich blend of ‘old’

and new. Typhoon Zed, a Zeditave 5YO that Tim snared for $62,500 from the 2005 Sydney Classic, has now won seven from 22 starts which include Group One victories in the Manikato Stakes and The Galaxy last year, >>

equine auto trainers report along with recent placings in the Lightning-G1 and Oakleigh Plate-G1 (beaten a half length). A distant relative of the brilliant Secretariat, Typhoon Zed has now won $927,035 and should go close to breaking the million dollar barrier in the months ahead. But while Tim couldn’t break through for a Group victory

during the Melbourne carnival, he ensured his name was in the mix during the Golden Slipper carnival when his Danehill Dancer 2YO, Indian Ocean, took out the Magic Night Stakes-G2 after coming home from five wide. Although there was to be no joy in the Golden Slipper, the Coolmore Stud owned filly

has more than her share of ability and – not dissimilar to Tim – appears destined for greater glory. For the meantime, Tim will continue to do what he does best: working the Martin magic every morning and keeping his eye firmly on every opportunity to exceed and excel.

Riseof the

Cyathostomes Compared to say bots, the cyathostomes are relatively unknown by horse owners but as Dr Timothy Ahern describes, they pose an increasing problem that deserves a little more attention.

M

OST HORSE OWNERS, trainers etc deworm their horses a few times a year. In their eyes it’s a bit of a “whether they need it or not” kind of thing. Others follow the manufacturer recommended regimens to the letter. What often comes out after closer scrutiny is that many horse people don’t really understand how they should deworm their horses or why? The facts are that, in 2009 the most important clinical problems arising from parasite infestation in horses older than yearlings are due to the presence of small strongyles in the large bowel. This group of parasites is commonly called the cyathostomes. Clinical disease caused by

24

www.tracktotrack.com

the cyathostomes can present in a variety of forms depending on the age of the horse and the time of year. 1. Fever (up to 40˚C), peripheral oedema (e.g. swollen legs) often associated with mild colic. 2. Sudden onset of diarrhea and rapid weight loss in late winter and spring. 3. Chronic weight loss and diarrhoea, particularly in older horses. 4. Colic especially recurrent bouts. 5. Seasonal “Malaise Syndrome” in adult horses including poor performance, lack of appetite, dull coat, lethargy, colic etc. The life cycle of the cyathostome worms is described as direct. Adult females lay eggs that are shed in the feces onto the pasture where they develop into larvae. It should be recognised that 99% of the worm population is present as eggs and larvae on the pasture. Infective larvae are then eaten by grazing horses where they invade the wall of the caecum and large intestine. Once in the bowel wall, cyathostome larvae are able to encyst in a state of arrested development where they can lie for periods from 1 month up to longer than 1 year. Clinical disease frequently occurs when the larval stages then awake from this period of sleep and erupt from the gut wall causing damage to the mucosa lining the gut. There are three main drug families

lethal doses of the drug for longer periods.

Praziquantel has no activity against strongyles including the cyathostomes but is the mainstay drug used to treat tapeworm infestation in horses. It causes spastic paralysis and decreases glucose uptake by the tapeworm. It is recommended that a drench containing praziquantel be used 1-2 times per year.

The macrocyclic lactone group of drugs includes the “mectin” drugs such as abamectin, ivermectin and the milbemycin drug moxidectin. These drugs work by causing nonspastic paralysis and death of both adult and larval stages of a broad range of worms. Ivermectin revolutionized deworming programs in the 1980’s due to its broad spectrum of activity and larval activity against the cyathostomes and Strongylus vulgaris – the parasite responsible for verminous arteritis. Interestingly Ivermectin became the first veterinary drug to reach $1 Billion worth of sales worldwide for its manufacturer Merck. It is considered a safe drug with one study reporting a dose 9X the recommended dose failing to produce adverse signs. Ivermectin is also considered safe for use in pregnant mares. Whilst generally considered to demonstrate broadspectrum activity against all worms except tapeworms anecdotal reports indicate the emergence of mectin-resistant

The benzimidazole (BZD) group of drugs includes oxfendazole, and fenbendazole. Both are considered safe for use in pregnant mares. The BZD drugs interfere with sugar metabolism and replication in the adult parasite rather than cause nerve paralysis. Unfortunately widespread BZD resistance exists among cyathostomes when used at the registered dose. The BZD drug, fenbendazole however, is highly effective against all stages of cyathostome development, including encysted larval stages, when given repeatedly. As such, specific “5 day” dosing protocols have been developed to expose the parasites to

worms. The development of ivermectin-resistance in cyathostomes affecting some horse populations together with reports of moxidectin-resistant round worms in population of foals suggest challenges ahead in the control of these increasingly important parasites. A quick scan of the producestore shelves reveals a multitude of generic ivermectin-based deworming products. This fact causes many horse people to be caught failing to institute effective drench rotation programs despite changing brand names. Take care when evaluating a worming product for your own use. Read the fine print to find out exactly what you are paying for. Pasture management and hygiene are equally as important as deworming in the control of equine cyathostomes. Recall that 99% of the worm population is in the pasture as eggs, newly hatched larvae and infective larvae waiting to be eating by your unsuspecting horse. Larval counts can be extremely high on overgrazed pastures. It is estimated that >>

feature story

where a single horse does not have 2-3 acres of free grazing area, removal of manure from the pasture is essential. Regular manure removal limits the number of eggs discharged into the environment. To be effective, manure removal should be undertaken twice weekly. Harrowing is commonly used as a control measure and, when combined with adequate periods of pasture rest, can assist in parasite control. Under certain conditions however, such as before rain or when pastures are wet, harrowing can increase larval dispersion. Harrowing should never be done on occupied pastures.

The frequency of dosing used to control the cyathostomes depends on the age of the horse, stocking density and seasonal variation in larval transmission. The aim of most programs used to control cyathostomes is to suppress fecal egg production. The BZD drugs at conventional label doses only kill susceptible adults and thus suppresses egg production for 4 – 6 weeks. Ivermectin typically suppresses egg production for 8 weeks and moxidectin for 12-14 weeks. It is these times that determine the frequency of dosing recommended. Dormant lavae imbedded in the gut wall, however, are often left behind

CYATHOSTOME EGG

allowing the worms to persist despite frequent deworming. The new millennium presents an increased challenge in our ability to effectively keep our horses free of parasite associated disease. The days of severe bouts of colic are, thanks to drugs such as ivermectin, largely a thing of the past. In their wake, however, are a range of clinical disease syndromes caused by the cyathostomes. These parasites carry a new range of challenges for their control. Talk to your vet about a control program that is appropriate to your horses, property and individual situation.

QTIS 600 review

POTENTIAL QTIS BONUSES PROVED TO BE A POWERFUL HOOK FOR QUEENSLAND BUYERS AS THEY DESCENDED ON THE GOLD COAST AT THE END OF MARCH.

QTIS 600

A HUGE BONUS FO R S TAT E

T

HE INAUGURAL QTIS 600 Yearling Sale – conducted over two days – saw $6 million change hands, with 333 yearlings selling an at average of $18,424. Pleasingly, vendors were prepared to meet the market and auctioneers – Magic Millions –

30

www.tracktotrack.com

posted a clearance rate of 81% by the close of play. As the name would suggest, all yearlings sold at the QTIS (Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme) 600 are eligible for $16.1 million in added stakes, bonuses and restricted races throughout the state, while graduates of this

particular sale will race for $1.5 million in the QTIS 600 race series during 2010. Despite a tough yearling market in 2009, Magic Millions MD David Chester was in no doubt that the sale filled a niche: “The value shoppers were here in force and never before have they been able to buy yearlings at such

QTIS 600 review HIDDEN DRAGON.

competitive prices. “A number of sales this year have found it hard work clearing horses at the bottom of the market, but this certainly wasn’t the case here. “Magic Millions, in association with the wonderful promotion by Queensland Racing through QTIS, worked hard to attract buyers from throughout the state for this unique auction. “We had a wonderful buying bench on hand – with people from right around the state – particularly many returning visitors from country areas.” One of those happy to make the trek was Townsville trainer, Olivia Cairns, whose two purchases included a youngster by Lyndhurst Stud stallion Hidden Dragon. A Group winning son of Danehill, Hidden Dragon has proved to be hugely popular since heading to stud in 2006 and trainers have paid close attention to his first crop at this year’s sales. As an added – and somewhat inspired – incentive, Lyndhurst Stud placed all 25 purchasers of Hidden Dragon yearlings into a draw to win a trip for two to the Hong Kong International races

in December. And, as you’ve undoubtedly surmised, Olivia drew the lucky marble. Somewhat fittingly, Lyndhurst – which has supported the QTIS sale from the word go and been very proactive in getting this auction up and running – offered the two sale toppers: a Lion Heart colt sold to Len Wheeler for $130,000 and a Falvelon colt knocked down to NZ agent, Paul Willets, for $105,000. The biggest buyer, however, both by numbers and spend, was Gold Coast trainer Helen Page who signed for 20 yearlings from $4,000 to $50,000 for a sale total of $363,000. One thing appears certain in that the QTIS 600 – chapter two – will patronised in even greater numbers: especially when a few of those bonuses start going off!

A NI VA C

As a kid growing up, I heard the story of how Archer, winner of the first two Melbourne Cups (1861-62), had been walked from Nowra in NSW to Melbourne … a distance of 800 kilometres. Often wondering whether he’d taken the Pacific or the Hume, imagine my dismay when it was revealed that Archer actually travelled to Melbourne by boat. But that’s not the half of it. Not by a longshot …

N

OBODY REALLY FANCIED Archer’s chances in the 1861 Melbourne Cup, except for his trainer Etienne de

hotpot Mormon, but punters, by and large, were having none of the visitor as it was widely reported that Archer had sustained an injury just days before the race.

I was probably interstate rivalry more It than anything else. According to the tth records, Archer performed poorly at two re starts in May 1860 but had subsequently won seven straight throughout the Sydney spring and autumn.

He was a big horse – 16.3 hands – with a “curious rolling gait” and when he galloped his ‘Robert Young’ used to hang out of his mouth. Legend has it that Archer possessed an incredible stride but unfortunately, the large body put massive pressure on his legs and he was prone to breaking down. >>

anivac back in time For decades it was popular belief, albeit urban myth, that Archer had actually been walked from Etienne de Mestre’s ‘Terara Farm’ near Nowra in NSW to Flemington for both the 1861 and 1862 Melbourne Cups. However, newspaper reports at the time reveal that Archer – along with two more of de Mestre’s horses in Exeter and Inheritor – travelled from Sydney to Port Melbourne on the steamboat City of Sydney, departing on 18 September 1861 and arriving three days later. Perhaps the ‘Nowra’ reference alludes to Archer’s departure – via steamer – from Greenwell Point (near Nowra) to Sydney on 9 September. (Nowra would again come to Cup prominence when Arwon – Nowra spelt backwards – won the 1978 Melbourne Cup). In the days before rail transport and a long time before ‘horse power’ had dual purpose, sea was the only way to travel. But it wasn’t always the safest. There were countless shipwrecks off the NSW coast throughout the 19th century and indeed, de Mestre’s 1876 entry – Robin Hood – drowned when the SS City of Melbourne ran into a severe storm off Jervis Bay and was hit by several rogue waves. Another one who drowned was AJC Metropolitan winner Nemesis, effectively leaving the Cup that year without its top two picks. Seven of the nine horses on board perished, while the aptly named AJC Derby winner – Robinson Crusoe – managed to survive. Bookmakers found themselves in the middle of a right royal stink after presenting the City of Melbourne’s captain with a coin laden purse for his part in saving them thousands of pounds which had already been laid on the two favourites. The Captain’s name? Benjamin Paddle. The only time in recorded history that someone was up the creek with a Paddle!

34

www.tracktotrack.com

Still, 29 year old Etienne considered his horse a moral and had a huge plonk, resulting in Archer being sent out second favourite (6/1) behind Mormon. The race had drawn quite a crowd to Flemington – 4,000 or so. In what can only be considered one of the all-time great initiatives, Victoria Turf Club secretary Robert Bagot, offered each member two ladies tickets in the belief that where chicks go, roosters will follow. Except that he didn’t quite use that terminology: although the sentiment’s the same. (And by the way, before any buffs get on the phone and harass the publisher, it was the Victoria Turf Club and not the Victoria Racing Club, which wouldn’t be formed until 1864). First, and only, prize for the inaugural Cup was 710 gold sovereigns plus a hand beaten gold watch as the trophy. ARCHER

Last year, the Melbourne Cup’s winning owners received $3.3 million in prizemoney, although the trophy was still hand beaten (only this time the three handled ‘loving Cup’ is made up of 34 pieces of 18 carat gold metal, is hand beaten over 200 hours and costs around $125,000 to produce). As has been the case with nearly every one of the 109 Melbourne Cups staged thus far, the 1861 race was ‘eventful’. Seventeen horses lined up, but only 13 made it to the finishing post after three of them fell (two of them having to be put down) and one bolting off the course. Turning for home, much to the delight of the crowd, Mormon hit the front, but as with many of the leaders in that famous race (I’m still in therapy over Kingston Town) Archer ran him down. But whereas Kingston Town was beaten a merkin by Gurner’s

www .vrc.n et.au

anivac back in time

Lane in the 1982 Cup, Archer went past Mormon like the other horse had been shot, winning by six lengths. The winning time of three minutes 52 seconds for the two miler was the slowest in the Cup’s history, but fairly irrelevant in the general scheme of things. Archer and his considerably richer trainer were none the worse for the experience as both backed up at Flemington the next day, taking out the Melbourne Town Plate (2 miles) in exactly the same time. Heading back north, Archer would win the Queens Plate over 3 miles in May 1862 before returning to Melbourne for Cup No. 2 on 13 November. (For those who think that the first Tuesday in November has never been as late as the 13th, the Cup was first run on a Tuesday in 1875 and, two years later, was officially gazetted as a public holiday). This time around Archer was sent out a 2/1 favourite and cleaned up in front of a crowd of 7,000 (the record mob for the Melbourne Cup was 2003 when 122,736 lobbed at Flemington). Archer, carrying 64.5 kgs, absolutely donkey licked them,

winning by eight lengths: it’s a margin that was only equaled the once (Rain Lover 1968) and never beaten.

ETIENNE DE MESTRE

It was to be 72 years before another horse (Peter Pan 1932 and 1934) would win two Cups and 107 years before a horse would win the Cup in successive years (Rain Lover 1968 and 1969). Makybe Diva, who was again in the news last month when her first foal was sold for $1.5 million at the Easter Yearling Sale, is the only horse to win three Cups (successively or otherwise). Would Archer have won three Cups? Hard to say. When weights were declared in May 1863, Archer had been allocated 11 stone, 4 pounds – over 71 kilos. (The immortal Carbine would win the Cup in 1890 carrying 65.5 kgs, the heaviest weight carried to victory in the Melbourne Cup.) As we all know, weight will stop a train, but it was a different kind of wait that put paid to any

chance of a three peat. Acceptances for the race had to be received at the VTC office by 8pm on 1 July and de Mestre had forgotten about lodging the paperwork until that morning. Telegraphing the acceptance to Melbourne (obviously his email wasn’t working), de Mestre found himself up manure creek given that it was a public holiday in Melbourne and the telegraph didn’t arrive at the VTC until the following morning. Oops. The Victoria Turf Club – showing the same foresight and compassion that many of its race club successors have displayed in the ensuing century and a half – immediately scratched the horse. Naturally there was much hue and cry and public pressure was brought to bear on the VTC. >>

anivac back in time But, you guessed it, the race club wouldn’t budge. As a consequence, interstate owners withdraw their horses and there were only seven starters – the smallest field ever – in the 1863 Melbourne Cup (won by Banker, who has largely been consigned to history’s dustbin).

he stood at a fee of 10 pounds, 10 shillings – one of the highest fees at the time. Unfortunately, as a sire, Archer proved to be a great racehorse and left nothing of note. At the age of 16, Archer managed to wander into a paddock of green barley and,

gorging himself, ended up with serious lung inflammation. He died on 22 December 1872. But green barley and officious clubs couldn’t halt the legacy that is Archer who, through his bold running style and determination, helped create a race that defines a nation.

Recurring injuries saw Archer retired to stud in 1864, where

Ironically, Archer sustained an injury in the weeks leading up to the race and probably wouldn’t have been able to start in the Cup.

VICTORIAN S H OWC A S E

A N ’ T REMEMBER who came up with the title, but the decision to name Victoria’s premier ‘mixed’ auction – the Great Southern – had plenty of merit. It certainly is the best venue south of the Murray to buy broodmares and it actually gets a jump on interstate rivals with its two day lineup of weanlings. Indeed, the weanlings commence proceedings at Inglis’ Oaklands Junction complex with 329 lots set to go under the hammer on Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 May, while the Bloodstock section – featuring mares and racing stock – continues on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 May, stretching to 455 lots (330-784). The weanling section is the ideal showcase for the first crop of exciting young sires who went to stud in 2007, including Artie Schiller (4 entries), Aussie Rules (1), California Dane (2), Churchill Downs (8), Danerich (2), Econsul (9), Enemy of

Average (2), Gonski (12), Grey Swallow (1), Holy Roman Emperor (2), Manton (2), Primus (7) and Written Tycoon (6). Not surprisingly, there are sizeable entries from Victoria’s finest including Al Samer, Bel Esprit, Bianconi, Court of Jewels, Danbird, Dash For Cash, Delago Brom, Delzao, Dubai Destination, Elvstroem, Estambul, God’s Own, Happy Giggle, Hold That Tiger, Ice Point, Keep The Faith, Kempinsky, King de Lago, King of Roses, Lago Delight, Ne Coupez Pas, Niello, Oamaru Force, Racer’s Edge, Seul Amour, Sirius Slew, Tuscanos, Umatilla and Zenno Rob Roy, while major interstate stallions also complement the lineup. Erinvale Thoroughbreds (31 entries), Ballarto Lodge, Blackwood, Blue Gum, Burnewang North, Caithness, Chatswood, Dorrington Park, Dowling Park, Eldon Park, Eliza Park, Emirates Park, Fulmen, Glentree Downs, Goulburn Park, Glentree Downs, Hollylodge, Independent

Stallions, Kedarona, Kingston Park, Laceby Lodge, Lauriston, Little Plains, Makybe, Monterey, Noor Elaine, Northern Lodge, Park Lane, Riverend Park, Rosemont, Swettenham, Three Bridges, Woodside Park and Yallambee Stud head up the local vendors, while Darley (23 in an Annual Reduction) and Lindsay Park (26) both weigh in with large consignments. The Bloodstock section, which makes for a busy two days, reveals similar patronage in terms of talent and diversity. Last year the weanlings averaged $10,745, while the mixed section averaged $7,856 and don’t be surprised if it’s one sale that holds its own this year. It’s an arguably superior catalogue to that of 12 months ago, has 226 less entries and the 2008 bottom line doesn’t have quite the lofty perch from which to fall. Regardless, there will be plenty of bargains on display – it’s just a matter of choosing the right one!

horseman’s corner

ARMOUR LININGS EVER SEEN A HORSE SLIP OVER ON CONCRETE? IT’S NOT A PRETTY SIGHT.

U

N F O RT U N A T E L Y , that kind of surface – for horses particularly – is often akin to a skating rink, especially when wet. And the ‘landing’ is never soft : the best that you can usually hope for is that they only take a bit of bark off, but there’s always the real possibility they’ll do something much, much worse.

Ken Lawson’s Armour Linings has come up with a solution in the form of polyurethane coating which is rapidly growing in popularity and being used by major stud farms, training stables and racetracks throughout Australia.

organic units joined by urethane (carbamate) links. Polyurethane polymers are formed through step-growth polymerization by reacting a monomer containing at least two isocyanate functional groups with another monomer containing at least two hydroxyl (alcohol) groups in the presence of a catalyst. Huh?

“I’ve seen first hand the effects of horses falling over on hard surfaces and the end result can be devastating.”

Help is at hand though … well, as far as your own ‘back yard’ is concerned.

48

www.tracktotrack.com

Just so that you’re well informed if the subject comes up at the next party you go to, polyurethane is any polymer consisting of a chain of

Put more simply for those journos who didn’t turn up to day 2 of school, Armour Linings’ polyurethane coating is stuff that you spray onto hard surfaces which stops horses from slipping over. It’s sprayed straight onto surfaces

horseman’s corner

such as wash bays, stable walls and floors, horse floats, crush areas, tie up boxes and walkways. It sets in seconds and is touch dry in minutes. Ken ‘discovered’ polyurethane coating around 13 years ago when some mates returned from the United States and starting harping on about this whiz bang product. Ken’s ears pricked. Growing up around Dubbo in NSW he’d become the youngest electrical inspector in the region and worked primarily in the building industry. Experiencing a sea change around 18 years ago, Ken moved to Queensland and purchased a transport company, but always kept his eye out for business opportunities. He’s also been a fair sort of horse ‘tragic’ as well. Both his grandfathers owned horses, his father was a trainer and so are two of his brothers. So, when the subject of polyurethane came up at Ken’s ‘party’, he was quick to pounce. A master of all trades, Ken was able to make a lot of his own equipment, including the spray unit, and with a determination to supply where needed (regardless of location), Armour Linings was launched. “The polyurethane lasts longer than rubber products and is safer as the coating is stuck to the floor or walls and cannot move or shift under a horse’s feet,” Ken explains. “It’s more hygienic as rubber matting always manages to collect dirt, dust and urine underneath.” Ken kicked off with horse floats, but the company has evolved to the point where it is now contracted by a number of racetracks and many of the leading stud farms up and down the eastern seaboard. “I’ve seen first hand the effects of horses falling over on hard surfaces and the end result can be devastating. “Only recently we were commissioned to do a section of a Queensland racetrack and a horse, a very promising one at that, slipped over a few metres past the area we had surfaced. The horse ended up breaking his jaw and might not race again.” Give Ken a call 07 5442 1466 or 0408 788 188 – guaranteed he won’t give you a technical lecture on isocyanates or hydroxyls, but prevention being the best form of cure, he might save you a lot of money in the long run.

First Season Sires Part 1 2009

The announcement of new stallions for the 2009 spring have begun with several of Victoria and NSW’s major studs home to exciting types from Australia and overseas. As usual the Danzig line will be well represented with Blue Gum standing his well credentialled son Astronomer Royal whilst breeders can also tap into the influence of Danehill via Duke Of Marmalade, Kapchat (Danzero) and Mutawaajid (Redoute’s Choice). Kingmambo has two sons also debuting – Eavesdropper and Henrythenavigator.

ASTRONOMER ROYAL (US)

Bay, 2004 Danzig (US) – Sheepscot (US) by Easy Goer (US) Standing: Blue Gum Farm, VIC Ph: 03 5795 3331 www.bluegumfarm.com.au

Sons of Danzig have fared well in this part of the world and Blue Gum’s new boy Astronomer Royal – a three times winner from 1200m to 1600m looks a good choice for Victoria. An

52

impressive Newbury maiden winner at only his second start, Astronomer Royal quickly progressed and second up next time in was able to overcame interference to win the Poule d’Essai des Poulains… the Racing Post noting his “smart turn of foot.”Leaving in his wake the likes of Creachadoir, Excellent Art and Spirit One, Astronomer Royal back in the

UK added to his record a St James’s Palace Stakes-Gr.1 third to Excellent Art and Duke Of Marmalade and a Gr.3 Greenslands Stakes victory (with 63.5kg) at The Curragh. Currently completing his first season at stud at the Haras de la Reboursiere, Astronomer Royal is a son of the stakes winner Sheepscot –dam of the US Gr.2 winner Navesink River.

EAVESDROPPER (US)

Bay, 2000 Kingmambo (US) – Weekend Surprise (US) by Secretariat (US) Standing: Emirates Park, NSW Ph: 02 6546 6550 www.emiratespark.com.au

A consistent Listed winner sprinter, Eavesdropper heads to Australia as the winner of three of 16 with a further seven placings to his credit. He is a son of Mr Prospector’s finest in Kingmambo – triple

Gr.1 winning sire of 73 stakes winners. And what a female line! A family littered with not only high class performers but with successful stallions such as AP Indy, Summer Squall, Lemon Drop Kid, Spectacular Spy, Honor Grades, Wolfhound, Bite The Bullet, Statue Of Liberty and Raja Baba. From limited early opportunities in the US, Eavesdropper has

already been represented by ten individual winners from his first 20 runners with quality filly Hear No Angel displaying particular ability. Eavesdropper boasts further pedigree strength via his dam Weekend Surprise, a Gr.3 winning daughter of the legendary Secretariat – super sire and broodmare sire of no less than 151 stakes winners.

HENRYTHENAVIGATOR

Bay/brown, 05 Kingmambo (US) – Sequoyah (Ire) by Sadler’s Wells (US) Standing: Coolmore Stud, NSW Ph: 02 6576 4200 www.coolmore.com

Six wins from ten starts, the record of an exceptional galloper – and all the more impressive when four of those successes came at Gr.1 level.

A much admired member of the Coolmore team, Henrythenavigator showed good ability at two and really thrived at three, taking out the English and Irish 2000 Guineas. On a roll, he then won the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, four Gr.1s in a row. Line-bred to the influential

stallions Raise A Native and Northern Dancer and to the famed matriarch Special, Henrythenavigator is a son of the Gr.1 mare Sequoyah. Also dam of the Gr.3 filly Queen Cleopatra, she is a full sister to the Ascot Fillies Mile-Gr.1 winner Listen from the family of the successful stallions Dolphin Street and Bluebird.

MUTAWAAJID

Bay, 2003 Redoute’s Choice – Elated Lady by Vain Standing: Emirates Park, NSW Ph: 02 6546 6550 www.emiratespark.com.au

New to Emirates this spring is this well credentialled son of Redoute’s Choice, a quality sprinter/miler successful at five of his 12 starts – quickly able to amass over $350,000 in stakes.

Impressively winning his first five starts, he progressed quickly through the grades to take out the Sovereign Stakes-Gr.2 (beating Sniper’s Bullet) and the Hobartville Stakes-Gr.2 (defeating Gold Edition). Considered classy enough to be campaigned overseas, Mutawaajid travelled to the UK where he acquitted himself

well under a weight scale tipped against him… his most notable performance a close up fourth in the Gr.1 Sprint Cup at Haydock. A half brother to the dual Group winners Adeewin and Fatoon, Mutawaajid is out of a dual city winning daughter of Vain and the stakes winner Lady Upstage – dam of the adaptable champ Shaftesbury Avenue.

First Season Sires Part 1 2009 cont. DUKE OF MARMALADE (IRE)

Bay, 2004 Danehill (US) – Love Me True (US) by Kingmambo (US) Standing: Coolmore Stud, NSW Ph: 02 6576 4200 www.coolmore.com

Duke Of Marmalade is one of Danehill’s best racing sons – an outstanding galloper whose arrival in Australia will be keenly anticipated. A member of the prolific Aidan O’Brien/Coolmore stable, Duke Of Marmalade did not take long to strike winning form

– at his second outing taking out his maiden at the Curragh. From there he stepped straight up to Gr.2 class – a second in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood seeing him installed as early Guineas favourite. Fourth in that race and consistent throughout his threeyear-old campaign (despite problems resulting from a fractured pastern), Duke Of Marmalade really hit form at four – winning five Gr.1s in a

row – the Prix Ganay, the Gold Cup, Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Juddmonte International. A son of the stakes placed Kingmambo mare Love Me True, Duke Of Marmalade hails from an outstanding family – that of the feature race winners and proven stallions Bite The Bullet, Wolfhound, AP Indy, Summer Squall, Lemon Drop Kid and Spectacular Spy.

KAPHERO

Bay, 2003 Danzero – Kapchat (NZ) by Centaine Standing: Swettenham Stud, VIC Ph: 03 5794 2044 www.swettenham.com.au

A son of the Golden Slipper Stakes winner Danzero, highly successful sire of 32 stakes winners, the speedy and durable Kaphero was a $340,000 Magic Millions yearling who at the time of writing had amassed just short of $800,000 in stakes. Still in work and due to be retired to Swettenham this spring, the Leon Corstens

54

www.tracktotrack.com

trained bay began his racing career as a member of the Lee Freedman stable – lining up on five occasions as a twoyear-old and winning three races including the Listed Blue Diamond Preview and the Adelaide Magic Millions. Losing his way for a while, Kaphero was rejuvenated by his new trainer and since the spring of 2007 he has won seven races including the Gr.3 McEwen Stakes. Boasting an outstanding overall strike rate of ten wins from 30 starts, Kaphero is out of

the Gr.1 mare Kapchat – also dam of the speedy dual Listed winner Princesa and the stakes placed metropolitan winners Hidden Energy, Wasimah and Keeneland. Kapchat is a daughter of the stakes placed Kapelle Lady – half sister to the wonderful broodmare Hunza. Two of her progeny – Courtza and Our Pompeii – were multiple Gr.1 winners and the former is of course dam of the dual Gr.1 winning leading stallion O’Reilly.
