What a year 2009 310 races won by horses consigned by Cameron Barnes To anyone and everyone from the service born to the winners stall have a quiet one and reflect. Because if it was easy from start to finish everyone would be doing it The thrill of a winner from Coast to Coast, City to Bush is a long old haul. Maybe why it feels so good. If consigning a winner gives a feeling of achievement. Then selling a horse to a client or purchasing one at sale + watching the clients horse resold at auction for an amount much more is an even better feeling eg.
Unraced 2yo gelding purchased at auction $6000 resold at auction by new owner $55,000 2 months later. Yearling filly purchased at auction for $7000 resold 8 months later at auction by new owners $100,000. Mare sold in foal $80,000, resultant yearling makes $220,000. Mare sold privately for $15,000 makes $87,500 for new owners 9 months later. Maiden broodmare sold for $4500 has her first yearling make $60,000. 3 in 1 package $20,000, foal at foot makes $50,000. Buying a stallion for $1000 at a weekly Camden Horse Sale + watching his first foal win $44,150 in 7 starts north Qld.

009 has been a memorable year to say the very least. It started out promising enough with Barack Obama assuming office on a platform of change – sadly a dream stymied by the faltering global economy. Then there was the devastation of the Victorian bushfires, from which many are still suffering the after affects.

HIDDEN DRAGON
Clearly one of the nation’s most exciting young stallions, Hidden Dragon is off to a great start with his first crop of 2YOs, while his second crop is poised to leave a mark at major yearling sales in 2010. A son of the legendary Danehill from the 3-time Group One winner Ballroom Babe, Hidden Dragon was a Group winner and Group One runnerup in Hong Kong. This ‘crouching tiger’ is ready to pounce.

steady (even if Tiger got clubbed in Florida after clubbing his way to victory in Melbourne). As we in the industry do as every New Year draws closer, we look toward the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale and surmise whether it will be feast or famine. The MM mob has done a fantastic job in assembling its catalogue – especially in light of the devastation wrought by EI (from which this yearling crop was conceived) – and Ric Chapman previews the top lots. We also look at buying and selling yearlings from a sales company’s and trainer’s perspective which is bound to open a few eyes. To their credit, both Magic Millions and Inglis have been ‘on the road’, drumming up business from each point of the globe, and for now we can just wait and wonder … and dream of winners. In the meantime, on behalf of the entire team at Track To Track, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and hope that you’ll join us in 2010.

SHAMOLINE
WARRIOR On Derby morning, with the scratching of raging hot favourite S h a m o l i n e Warrior, Mark Kavanagh must have thought he’d kicked a black cat as he walked under the ladder. Two of his stable stars – Cats Whisker and Maldivian – had been retired in recent weeks while, just seven days prior, Whobegotyou ran a disappointing sixth in the Cox Plate after being sent out the punters’ elect. It’s amazing how four days can make all the difference and Mark – while celebrating Shocking’s win in the Melbourne Cup – would undoubtedly have been philosophical about Shamoline Warrior’s Derby hiccup. After all, he knows he’s got a very good horse with which to attack those big autumn plums …

Delbridge Racing – fronted Mark Kavanagh prior to the 2008 sales and revealed his budget, adding that he wanted something that would give his owners a ‘show’ for a couple of seasons.
So Mark, who heads up the successful syndicating mob –
Kavanagh replied – somewhat presciently as it turns out – that he’d get him a $100,000 horse for his 60.
ARK LEO only had $60,000 to spend. Sure, that still buys a few rounds at the pub on Friday nights, but hardly big bickkies at a major yearling sale.
It took Kavanagh a while to find something to fit the bill, but eventually he spied a Shamardal colt from the Dehere mare Picholine at the Inglis Melbourne Premier and snapped him up on behalf of Delbridge. To say that the colt wasn’t much to look at is probably an understatement, hence the stable name of ‘Moose’. >> www.tracktotrack.com
11
As Kavanagh diplomatically put it: “You don’t buy those early racing types for $60,000. You have to buy the ugly duckling that is going to turn into the beautiful swan.” That said, Mark Leo got to work and formed a syndicate of 21 to race the horse … eight of them first time owners who, all things considered, probably wouldn’t have cared as long as their neddy had four legs and a tail. Mark formed Delbridge Racing

in 2003, more as a hobby than a business, but success didn’t take too long to come knocking with the first three racehorses he purchased winning 21 races between them. Overall, the syndicate tally is 33 horses, 23 of which have won … a huge result given the inexact science that is racing. With that kind of resume, Mark had a bit to work with and, for the layperson, a son of first 12

season sire, Shamardal was not be sneezed at. As Sydney scribe, Ray Thomas, points out in his excellent Derby eve feature on Shamoline Warrior, the horse was lucky to be with us in a sense, given that Shamardal had been a nerve ending away from ‘destruction’ as a young horse. Diagnosed as a ‘wobbler’ – an ailment whereby horses lose co-ordination in their legs due to compression of the spinal column – Shamardal managed to pull through after some radical treatment. Shamardal should probably be considered fortunate to have got that far given that his mum, the Maktoum family owned, Helsinki was described “as an average runner, a seemingly average broodmare with a slightly crooked front leg and was rumoured to have difficulties getting pregnant.”
tidy record on the track with three wins and seven placings from 21 starts, including a second to the champion filly Unworldly in the AJC Flight Stakes-G1. By the time Picholine’s Shamardal colt was sold his year older half brother had raced just once for a fifth of nine at Morphettville on New Year’s Day. However, some three weeks after Mark Leo had signed off on the 60 large, Shamoline Warrior’s sibling – Rebel Raider – won at Cheltenham and, less than three weeks after that, the SAJC Sires’ Produce Stakes-G3 at Morphettville. Mark now had plenty to work with and the newly minted syndicate members looked on in
Sold to North American breeders – Brilliant Stable – Helsinki was sent to Giant’s Causeway, with the end result being Shamardal. Well, what goes around, comes around and after securing the colt from the mother they discarded, the Maktoum owned Godolphin raced Shamardal to six wins – including four Group Ones – from seven starts. Shuttled to Darley in the spring of 2006, one of the first to meet and greet was Harry Perks’ mare, Picholine who had been sent to stablemate, Reset, the previous season (more on that in a tick). Picholine had slipped (Desert Prince) and missed (Giant’s Causeway) in her first two seasons at stud after compiling a

awe as Rebel Raider took out the VRC Derby-G1 at cricket score odds last spring but proved it was no fluke with another Derby victory in Adelaide this May (albeit at much shorter odds). With expectations zooming through the roof, Leo, Kavanagh and the 21 disciples were given a glimpse of what was to come when Shamoline Warrior made his debut over 1200m at Sale at the end of April, flying home from near last at the 400m to score by a whisker. One could only guesstimate at the excitement they shared at Sale, but it was a dress rehearsal compared to what followed … resuming with a fourth to subsequent Guineas winner Starspangledbanner in the Vain
Stakes-LR … finishing on their heels in the Henry Bucks-LR at Flemington …. a close second at headquarters in September.
the Norman Robinson Stakes-G3 over 2000m at Caulfield.
However, it all came together for Shamoline Warrior in the UCI Stakes-LR at Flemington on 3 October, scoring with a withering burst and providing Delbridge Racing with its first stakes winner.
The competition was red hot: Onemorenomore had already won a Group One and Gathering had run second to eventual Derby winner Monaco Consul in the Champion Stakes-G1, but Shamoline Warrior didn’t put a hoof wrong, winning with a panel and a half to spare.
Perhaps the ‘newbies’ couldn’t fully grasp the impact of snaring black type with your first, but one of the syndicate members – George Pouki – certainly did.
Unlike his older half brother the year previously, Shamoline Warrior was heading into the VRC Derby at very short odds, but then disaster struck.
George’s previous best was a Tatura Maiden winner.
On the morning of the Derby – as the owners were thinking about ties and hats and a big, big day ahead of them – Shamoline Warrior was scratched due to an elevated temperature. >>
A fortnight on, Shamoline Warrior faced his best test to date in the Derby’s traditional leadup,

“
YOU DON’T BUY THOSE EARLY RACING TYPES FOR $60,000. YOU HAVE TO BUY THE UGLY DUCKLING THAT IS GOING TO TURN INTO THE BEAUTIFUL SWAN.
”
Mark Kavanagh has had to make some tough calls in his years as a trainer, but notifying the owners that Shamoline Warrior was going to be scratched, would have been one of the toughest. That said, there are three Derbies to go and myriad opportunities for Shamoline Warrior to strut his stuff in the autumn and beyond. Who knows, Kavanagh may just have another contender on the first Tuesday in November 2010? But whatever results from here on in, the Delbridge Racing Platinum Syndicate has had one helluva ride. As Thomas pointed out in his article, this is what racing is all about: “Racing might be going through a difficult period as it loses market share to other sports and copes with the increasingly intense competition for the gambling dollar.
“Clubs have tried hard to combat the trend by promoting the entertainment value of going to the races, but for so many years they have concentrated on beautiful girls, booze and betting. “They forgot about the one constant that makes horseracing such a spectacle … the majestic thoroughbred and the fun of owning racehorses.” Perhaps Mark Leo sums it up best as he reflects on the syndicate which includes wife Linda and mate of 30 years, Mark Lewis, who lives in Taiwan. “This is fantastic for the group who own Shamoline Warrior and it’s fantastic for racing. “They have come in with low expectations and are overachieving.” Far too often it’s the other way around, but every now and then a racetrack warrior called ‘Moose’ will turn it all around.

Breeding expert and keen racing enthusiast, Ric Chapman, has written an open letter to Santa (or perhaps a more realistic philanthropist), seeking out the cream of the crop at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions. Here’s his top 20.
Lot 45
STARCRAFT – ANNBARI colt
Winning family and the mare (by Mossman) was a gifted 2YO who reached stakes level. She’s a ½ sister to a Group Three winner in Patterns and you just know that Oakwood Farm will have this colt looking a treat. Brings to the table potential 2YO speed and grit to take it into his later life. Prudent purchase.

OR YEARS I have stood back, watching with a mixture of envy and interest as yearling after yearling paraded through the Magic Millions Gold Coast ring.
And every time I stood there hoping someone would just say, “hey man, here’s the money you need to buy 20 youngsters for us. Go hard.” Hasn’t happened as yet – but if it did, these are the 20 youngsters I would buy to race and breed with later on. Please note that they are not in any particular order and I would be happy with any of them!
By a prolific getter of winners from a city winning impeccably bred mare (by Peintre Célèbre). That sort of combination is gold. Same family as stakes winners So Gorgeous, Tipungwuti, Wild Queen and Cumbria. Ticks many boxes and should give you a real sight.
Lot 50
COMMANDS – ANOTHER TIME filly
Commands has a brilliant strike rate – 348 winners from 506 to race. So on that alone this filly rates highly. But when you consider her mother is a 2YO winning stakes placegetter (by Gilded Time) and from a black type family… well, game over. Lovely purchase for breeding on purposes too.

MORE THAN READY – ARTISTIQUE colt
Anything by More Than Ready commands respect and there are 34 of them catalogued in the main sessions. The thing that stands this colt apart is that he was prepared at Edinglassie (fantastic operation with a great record of black type success) and that he’s from a multiple city winner (Peintre Célèbre) mare. Lots of black type sprinters in the family too.
Lot 69
TESTA ROSSA – BALTICS filly
What a marvelous sprinting family. Second dam is Group Two winner and Group One placegetter Scandinavia who, as a matron, has produced Group One winner Magnus as well as Group Two winner Wilander and the producer Helsinge whose daughter is the former Champion 2YO and undefeated star Black Caviar. You’d expect this filly to fly – and be worth a packet.
Lot 71
CHOISIR – BARCELONA filly Sometimes you just get a sense from a pedigree page that the horse before you will be a flying machine … well, here’s one right here. Daughter of speed producer Choisir and the multiple Kiwi stakes winning Desert Sun mare Barcelona. Family is littered with black type too and will have been well prepped as it comes from Southern Cross Breeders in the Hunter.

CHARGE FORWARD
Lot 72
CHARGE FORWARD – BARSHA filly
Moments after signing for the previous lot, you can get straight back into the heat of battle and bid for this future broodmare star. Dam is a city winning juvenile (by Redoute’s Choice) from the family that gave us many, many black type performers including Charge Forward. Interesting breeding double up here – but one thing you know is, she will fly.
Lot 85
CHARGE FORWARD – BETSY PIE colt
Bred on the exact cross as Lot 72. That delicious combination just has speed, speed, speed written all over it. Glenlogan Park produce tough, quality gallopers and with this colt being from a multiple winning, stakes placed matron whose half-sister was a European juvenile star, he looks rather special.
Lot 118
FASTNET ROCK – CATHIE’S LANE filly
Another beautiful filly with breeding value written all over her. A ¾ sister to two multiple winners (from two to race), both of whom were stakes placed. Lovely, strong Aussie family tree where all of them were juvenile stars. This filly looks bullet proof.
Eight lovely Magic Millions yearlings including a draft by the promising young stallion Shadow Creek – a son of Zabeel from the prolific Eight Carat family Lot 959 b/br.c Mister Kwila – Shinko Fortune (by Shinko Forest): From the last crop of Mister Kwila, this colt’s grandam is a ½ sister to Gr.1 winner Danarani from family of Irish Champion 2Y0 Danzatore. Lot 967 b/br.c Shadow Creek – Sinistra (by Dangerous): dam is a ½ sister to stakes placed multiple city winner Barnacles from family of Gr.1 winner Andros. Lot 1120 b/br.c Shadow Creek – Diamond Time (by Nine Carat): 2nd foal of a 7 times winner from family of Gr.1 winner Victory Smile. Lot 1128 b.f Shadow Creek – Elegant Princess (by Strategic): full sister to recent winner Waasies Shadow from family of dual Gr.1 winner Roman Arch. Lot 1146 b/br.c Shadow Creek – Godsend Reign (by Celestial Dancer): ½ brother to 5 times winner Tuscan Jazz out of a 7 times winning mare. Lot 1178 b/br.f Shadow Creek – Kirra Belle (by Clang): sister to Pistol Knight (7 wins) and 1/2 sister to 11 times winner Hot Cymbal. Lot 1180 b/br.f Shadow Creek – Kwila’s Wish (by Mister Kwila): 3 times winning dam’s first two foals Sparkling Wish & Milora Miss have won 9 races between them.
Shadow Creek
KEEP WINNING WITH KELANA!
The most expensive yearling son of Zabeel sold in Australia in 2002, Shadow Creek has a real look of his family about him – and what a clan it is that he hails from, that of the mighty Eight Carat.
Bred by Cambridge Stud and trained by Lee Freedman, Shadow Creek was lightly raced. Breaking through at just his third start – saluting by an easy 2.3 lengths. A resident at Kelana Park Stud, Beaudesert, Shadow Creek was recently represented by his first winner – the promising Waasies Shadow impressive at the Sunshine Coast in late October. Taking the lead from the jump, he gave his rivals wind burn to win by nearly four lengths. Due to have stepped up to metropolitan class by the time this goes to print, Waasies Shadow is one of just 21 nice types from his sire’s debut crop.
Lot 1187 b.f Shadow Creek – Lady Vegas (by Success Express): dam is a ½ sister to dual city winner Vidify.

REDOUTE’S CHOICE – CINQUE filly
If the previous filly was bullet proof, then this is as good as death and taxes. What a glorious pedigree page – probably the best in the entire catalogue. And if Keep the Faith kicks a goal as a stallion, this filly will be worth even more. Should be a runner and if not, will be a handsome addition to your broodmare band. Dam was stakes winning 2YO.
Lot 167
MORE THAN READY – DANE TRYST colt
The More Than Ready x Danehill cross is simply potent. Dane Tryst was a juvenile winner and was stakes placed, assuring her a future at stud. Family tree can sprint and stay and this colt is a half to a multiple city winner too.
Lot 239
FASTNET ROCK
Lot 242 FASTNET ROCK – FUSAICHI ROSE colt If this colt can run and win a black type race, he’ll be worth 20 times what you pay for him. Dam was a winner by Fu Peg and grand dam was a prolific producer of winners, one being former Champion 3YO Filly and multiple Group One winner Serenade Rose. Fastnet Rock is doing the job and all adds up to this bloke being a star.
TESTA ROSSA – FULLAZZ filly
Lot 247 MORE THAN READY – GATHERING STORM colt
Bred to jump and run like the wind. Yarraman Park turn out tremendous yearlings and this filly will have all the polish and pedigree to make it a stand out. Dam was a precocious stakes winning juvenile by Redoute’s Choice whose own dam was a half to three stakes winners who also produced stakes winners. Fantastic buy.
Vinery has been at the forefront of selling brilliant juveniles over the past five years and this superbly bred colt will keep that tradition going. Dam won a stack of races in South Africa and is a stakes winner. This is her first living foal and the pedigree page is wonderful. A must to inspect.
Lot 250
REDOUTE’S CHOICE – GET TO WORK colt
What a cross. Champion sire covering a stakes winning juvenile by Snippets! This bloke should fly on the track and, being a colt, could be worth a fortune if he does. Hails from the family of Danehill made stars like Scintillation, Shania Dane and Puzzle Book. You have to get a good return on this Cressfield presented colt. MORE THAN READY

LONHRO – GIFT BOUQUET
ELUSIVE QUALITY – LEONE CHIARA
Well related colt whose stakes winning mother has turned into a great producer. He’s a half to speedy stakes winners Blahnik and Elysees and, prepped by Kitchwin Hills, he’s been given every chance in life to shine. And let’s not overlook who his daddy is … hotter than hot right now.
This filly would be one of the very first I’d mark on my list to buy as the family just doesn’t fail. Dam won seven races and was successful at Group Three level, but her little sister Chinchilla Rose and her big brother Ferocity have carved impressive careers out of racetrack efforts. Globally, Elusive Quality is a prolific producer of major winners.

Lot 266

ELVSTROEM – HALIBERY filly
Lot 496
Bred in the absolute purple. All Group One winning sons of Danehill seem capable of producing stars and the dam of this filly was a multiple stakes winning 2YO and Blue Diamond-G1 runnerup too. Fantastic family tree and is a broodmare superstar in the making. Great buy.
REDOUTE’S CHOICE – PURPLE GROOVE
Lot 315
DEHERE – JOLEUR colt
colt
Is yet another yearling with impeccable bloodlines. Dam was a most consistent galloper winning six races and mixing it with Group One and Group Two company many, many times. As a mum, she has thrown two from two to race, one of them a Group Three winner. Super speedsters are in the family tree too, including Taikun and Super Groove. Should be very popular.
Don’t you just get full of excitement and hope and joy when you buy something from a broodmare that has all the runs on the board? In this colt you have just that. Dam was a winner (by Bite The Bullet) and her three sons to race thus far have all won – two at stakes level and the other was stakes placed! You’ll have fun with this fellow.

SELLING &
What’s hot …
Just exactly how do sales companies select yearlings for their catalogues? If your horse missed out on a major sale in 2010, you probably think they pick ‘em with a pin and blindfold, but it’s considerably more complex than that! And, from the flip side of the coin, what processes do buyers undertake in search of that all elusive champion. Track To Track asked two highly experienced operators: Simon Vivian from Inglis and leading trainer Robbie Griffiths for the inside oil on buying and selling. 32

SIMON VIVIAN
S
IMON VIVIAN has been inspecting horses since before he could legally buy a beer. That’s around 34 summers he reckons.
see every breeder prosper: in a dwindling market it’s essential to look after our existing demographic and grow the industry through the success of breeders both big and small.
It’s his job – along with several of his peers – to select from the literally thousands of entries for Inglis sales each year which, by definition, means he also has the unenviable task of ‘scratching’ more than he runs with.
“Unfortunately, when you consider the time frame involved – 30 months from conception to sale time – what was deemed fashionable in the spring of 2009 won’t necessarily be in vogue come the yearling sales of 2012.
“The important thing for people to understand is that we want to
“And that’s probably the easy part! Attrition through
conformational faults as foals, or paddock accidents can also play a huge role. The grace of God factor. “Obviously though there are great rewards – even in these tough economic times – for breeders fortunate to come up with the right mix of pedigree and conformation.” So how does it all work? “Nominations for the major sales close on 1 August each year and, in a sale like the Melbourne Premier for instance, Inglis will receive around 2,000 to 2,200 entries. “Of those, approximately 600 will head to Premier I while another 200 are entered for Premier II. So, in effect, around one in four make the first session and around one in three overall. “In September we all meet at the head office in Sydney and sit down in front of the big screen, studying each and every pedigree and allocating each horse a rating. “It’s basically a score to determine – purely on pedigree at this stage – as to which horses will make the most money in the ring, based on current trends. “Then we take to the road and give each of the entries a thorough physical examination. The Melbourne office looks after farms in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, while the Sydney operation takes care of NSW, Queensland and New Zealand. “Extensive conformational reports are written up and then, in November, we look at the horse from both sides of the coin. “From here you will find that many of the entries which were
34
www.tracktotrack.com
yearling sale special
shoo-ins on pedigree have failed to meet the conformational criteria while, conversely, horses that were deemed borderline on pedigree, make the grade due to their physical presence. “It’s a fine balancing act and one that you occasionally get wrong (especially as there is often around four months between final inspections and sale time!), but it’s important that breeders understand it’s our role to facilitate both suppliers and buyers. After all, you are limited by the amount of horses you can enter for a given sale. “We do extensive marketing overseas to encourage buyers to our sales and a standard of quality has to be met to ensure they keep coming back. I’ve only recently returned from South Africa while some of the other guys from Inglis have been all throughout Asia promoting next year’s yearling sales. “It’s one of the hardest aspects of the job telling someone that their horse hasn’t made a given
sale, but we try to explain that it’s in everyone’s best interests to have what would be the worst horse in one sale become the best horse in another. “I suppose the best advice I can give in that regard is to ask breeders to look at their horse from a buyers’ perspective … take a long, hard look and ask yourself whether you’d buy the horse if roles were reversed?” Any other tips? “Review your mare or mares. Do they stack up commercially in terms of pedigree? Having six generations on a catalogue page won’t do you any favours in the sale ring. “Buyers tend to lean more toward younger mares and a mare’s race record is more important than you might think. “You should also assess how ‘old’ the form in a pedigree is too. “Another aspect which is quite often overlooked is the mare’s
conformation. If a mare has physical faults, then there is a real chance she’ll transmit that to progeny also. “Once you’ve taken all that into account, you then face the age old question of ‘which stallion’? “What is hot today can be as cold as last week’s pot roast by the time yearling sales roll around. “As a consequence many breeders will either choose a stallion with the runs on the board and has had quality books of mares in recent seasons, or a well performed first season stallion who, quite obviously, won’t have any strikes against his name by the time your yearling sells. “There is also the option of getting a professional overview of your horse as a foal and or weanling and placing he or she in a weanling sale if it appears they won’t meet commercial requirements as a yearling. >>

ROBBIE GRIFFITHS Robbie is a frequent flyer at most major yearling sales and, like all progressive trainers, relies on turnover of young horses to keep his stable flourishing. However, to do so, Robbie must purchase several youngsters every year on ‘spec’, relying on his considerable experience and instincts to on-sell the yearlings to an existing and rapidly growing band of clients. Fortunately, Robbie can lay claim to a tremendous strike rate with his yearling picks: each of them selected with a ‘5 point plan’.
“The first box to tick is clearly athleticism and also ‘presence’. Inspecting at a yearling sale is no different to than a punter watching horses in the mounting yard prior to a race. They come onto your radar and you make the choice as to whether they are worth backing. “Next, you look at the pedigree. All trainers seeking to on-sell will fine tune their ‘buy list’ based on the catalogue page: don’t forget that while you might like a certain sire, he might not be considered ‘trendy’ by those seeking to purchase shares in a yearling.
“First season sires also have an advantage as their performances are still fresh in the memories of racegoers … for instance, God’s Own winning the Caulfield Guineas or Elvstroem in the Caulfield Cup.
Garrards
And, with stable stars like Cocinero – purchased for $55,000 and now the winner of over $630,000 – the criteria appears to have plenty of merit.
“It’s much easier to market a Bel Esprit, a Shamardal or a Lonhro than a stallion whose ‘form’ is dated.
“Then you obviously take into consideration the female line. What was the mare like as a racehorse?

yearling sale special What has she done at stud? What are her relations like? “That’s when you go back and take a closer look at the individual and identify any leg problems. “This can be a fairly grey area and that’s where experience comes into play. There are certain things where the risk factor is too high, but just because a yearling’s turned out or turned in, doesn’t mean he or she won’t run. “Sure, it might affect their longevity in that the better the legs, the more runs you’re likely to get out of the horse, but if you’re prepared to be forgiving you may well reap those rewards very early on in the horse’s career. “There’s not much point in having a slow 5YO with immaculate conformation when you can have a slightly deviated 2YO that’s winning you races!
“Other factors given consideration are whether the yearling has a good walk, length of rein, height, male or female … “Number four is x-rays. If you like a yearling, get your vet to have a look at the radiographs as it will save you in the long run. “And finally, the yearling must pass the scope – not much point in getting the yearling home and discovering he or she has wind problems. “Oh, one more thing … keep your fingers crossed. Chances are that if a yearling ticks the first four boxes, you’ll have some serious competition when he or she steps into the ring.” Robbie is a firm believer that breeders benefit from placing their yearling with a major farm at yearling sales.
“I try and get around to visit as many farms as possible, looking at horses from foals up but, to be honest, with racing now seven days a week you tend to see more of the major studs due to the time factor. “It’s particularly advantageous too if a foal has been a bit backward early on as you’ll find that savvy representatives of a given farm at the sales will be able to give you a heads up as to their progress. “Most importantly though, it’s all about time management: if you have six, seven or eight hundred yearlings in a sale, you’re going to visit the biggest farms first so that you can get a large chunk of the entries out of the way early. “And first impressions mean a lot. It’s easier to get choosy if you’ve already seen a number of nice yearlings by a given stallion from initial inspections.”

Jetport Self Park Sam Dullard is a young business man at the helm of a growing concern – off site airport long and short term secure parking. it was originally started about 30 years ago. And the father’s name is Luke. “Jetport Security Parking commenced operation many years back in Freight Road Tullamarine,” said Sam. “My Dad bought into it at the turn of the century and the whole family has been behind it. It was the first off-airport car park established in an industry that is now highly competitive.” Right now it is probably the second biggest of its kind in the country. In 2000 the operation was taken over by Luke, Judy and
Carl Dullard and has since grown to twice the size with the opening of another site Jetport Self Park in December 2006. Located in South Centre Road Tullamarine, the new five level purpose built car park can house up to 650 cars. At present, the two locations have around 50 staff, 10 free courtesy coaches and the capacity to hold more than 2000 cars. Both sites offer total secure undercover parking for every traveler from busy company executives, jockeys and horse trainers to family holiday makers. >>

STEVE HAWKIN The Gold Coast Turf Club is one of the most innovative racing clubs in Australia, but like so many of its peers, is feeling the heat as sponsorship bread gets thinner by the economic slice. However, the Club is not about to play a fiddle while Rome burns and has introduced a nifty measure to raise coin … a sweepstakes to win naming rights to the Group Two Hollindale Stakes. TEVE HAWKINS has been ‘motivated’ since he was a little tacker.
Primarily a music announcer when he kicked off, Steve would eventually branch out into sports and news coverage.
Blessed with a good set of vocal chords and an enquiring mind, Steve wasn’t prepared to sit around and do whatever it is that 15 year old blokes do when they have nothing to do, so he started badgering the local radio station for a gig.
But he has many fond memories of those early days and some of the musical legends that joined him on the waves. And a diverse bunch they were too:
Now, with the advent of internet radio, anyone – and I mean anyone – can spin a tune or a tale, but 25 years ago, Amplitude modulation (AM) was the only option for this boy from the bush. Told he was too ‘commercial’ for community radio, Steve applied to radio stations in three country NSW towns, eventually landing a gig with 2MO at Gunnedah.
“Bobby Limb was my first interview and, conversely, my chat with James Blundell was one of the first interviews he’d had,” Steve recalls. “Tommy Emmanuel played his guitar in the studio for over half an hour – a surreal experience – and there was also Jimmy Barnes, Johnny Diesel, Slim Dusty, John Williamson, Angry Anderson …” Steve would also interview former prime minister, John Howard, but his all-time favourite was a chin wag with the late, great Fred Hollows:
and yet he had so much energy and was absolutely focused on his work with indigenous people and restoring eyesight. Brilliant human being.” Desperate to break into sports broadcasting, Steve moved on to 2TM Tamworth and then back to home turf at Taree, working for 2RE. But it wasn’t until he shifted to 2GF Grafton that the ‘scope’ he sought materialised, allowing Steve to call rugby league and racing, the news and greyhounds, talkback radio and voiceovers. And, to make sure that he wasn’t sitting around twiddling his thumbs, Steve also sold radio advertising. “It was a tremendous grounding and allowed me to develop a style that has carried me throughout my career.”
Eventually – and hardly surprisingly – Steve was headhunted by the big smoke, I’M A SELF-CONFESSED MICHAEL lured to join Brisbane’s PARKINSON GROUPIE. I JUST LOVE racing radio HIS STYLE: THAT RELAXED WAY OF HIS station, 4TAB, in 2002.

position and determined to sell ‘sweepstake packages’ whereby supporters will go into the draw for naming rights to the $300,000 Hollindale Stakes in May. “There will also be other prize draws which including naming rights to supporting races on the program, plus cash prizes ranging from $20,000 to $2,500. There’s only 150 available at $2,500 each. “We’ve only just announced the deal and it’s been very well received up here … I’ve already sold 12 packages myself.” It’s fair to say that Steve Hawkins is very content with his lot in life: his business success and busy lifestyle is nicely balanced by a young family (he and Kate have three daughters – Alex, Jessica and Lauryn) and ownership of champion greyhound, Queen Lauryn. It appears that the acorn hasn’t fallen far from the tree with Alex also giving ‘voice’ to a budding career, albeit in a slightly different direction. “Alex is a very good singer and has sung the national anthem at various sporting function. She appears to have a good future.”
We had to dig deep for information on Queen Lauryn, clearly named after his youngest daughter. Steve began calling greyhound races when he was 17 and has had a lifelong passion for the sport. Far from being a fountain of knowledge when it comes to dish lickers, we’re reliably informed that Queen Lauryn is one of the greatest race bitches of all time: the greyhound world’s equivalent to a Makybe Diva or a Sunline. “Queen Lauryn was a very good greyhound,” Steve points out. “She’s won two Group Ones, two Group Twos, two Group Threes, has broken six track records and accumulated over $280,000 in stakes.” Her racing career was cut short last week after coming on season again. With Queen Lauryn the talk of the greyhound world, Steve now finds himself – for the time being at least – on the other side of the microphone! No problems there: as you can see, the 15 year old kid who used to knock on radio station doors puts a whole new slant on versatility.

By and large, not many people in the thoroughbred industry know Jack Fitzgerald ... but they should

more risk of horses crashing into them breaking legs, necks, or knocking bark off…. So to speak! These fences of Jack’s are the safest fences on the planet and in most cases they come with a 50 year guarantee too. Let’s not forget also that they look outstanding and do not require painting updates. They are also weather resistant….oh, and are affordable. In short – they are absolutely perfect for horse lovers. “That’s very kind of you – but
pretty true none-the-less,” affirms Jack. “We are a professional and friendly team of engineers, designers and horse lovers dedicated to designing and creating the safest, most effective horse fencing solutions on earth.” And his company does. How he got his start in this caper – or the concept anyway - is as good a love story as any breeder could muster. His mum loved horses, while his dad loved plastics. “My father was from a plastics background
business profile and my mother was from a horse background. She loved them and her father was an SP bookie. So with horses and plastic combined, I pretty much had no choice other than make plastic horse fencing.” This theory was enhanced one sad afternoon back in 1999. On this day, one of his mum’s favorite horses crashed into a wire fence causing massive injuries. The Fitzgeralds did not have any safe polytech fences back then. No-one did.
So he did and he has not looked back After creating tremendous interest with his handsome and highly effective Wiacoat, Jack started getting the expected question from horse owners – “How do you add electricity to a plastic fence?” And given how many farms across the world have electrified fences around their horse population, it was a very fair question.
By way of explanation, the Zappa Rail fence is the electrified version of the highly popular and durable Polytech Rail and it can be electrified with a standard energizer. It has all the worthwhile benefits of the old Wiacoat fence. “It’s a good looking 120mm wide rail that never needs painting and features a high tensile wire in both the top and bottom,” said Jack. “It’s tough, very durable and weather resistant. We think it’s an absolute no brainer for stud farms, pony clubs and eventers.”
“At first the question was puzzling “There was nothing around that for me and it always led to a no It just goes to show you how would or could attach to the from me,” he recalls. “Customers popular innovative and safety wire fence that would cause it started wanting the benefits of the oriented ideas can be. not want to simply stop at that answer. So we researched and experimented.
He liked what he’d made and went out to see if others did too. This was in 2000. “I tried selling it nationally that year. I was still at high school so it was part time at first. When I finished school sales were large enough for me to continue doing this. At the time I started attending uni and began studying Mechanical Engineering. But, this only lasted a few months because I did not have time to study and make money. And when you are young, with an idea that is clearly making money, it’s a pretty easy choice to leave uni and concentrate on making the business grow,” suggested Jack.
“Then in 2006 we did manage a massive breakthrough. We developed a conductive polymer with a German based company that will bond to the base polymer and allow electricity to travel through carbon particles. “We called this technology Zappa and so stuck with that name. Zappa Rail was born! And since then Zappa Rail has grown to become our most popular fencing system,” he adds enthusiastically. “And, remember it is Australian owned and manufactured and is the first and only Australian made electric fencing system of its kind.”
”
Still, Jack Fitzgerald is doing horse owners a big favour the world over and he deserves all the success can get. James has even parlayed some of his good fortune into an Encosta de Lago young’un – which Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh is preparing. Jack Fitzgerald’s business is called Think Fencing. Probably a good idea to do just that. He has a website: www.thinkfencing.com.au and can be contacted on 0428 877 362. Jack will have a stand at the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale. He is well worth saying hi to. - By Ric Chapman

Perhaps the most extraordinary thing about Russell Cameron is how ‘ordinary’ he comes across! For instance, perform a web search for ‘Russell Cameron, trainer’ and you’d be surprised at just how little has been written about the bloke … especially when you consider what he’s achieved over the past two decades. A chronic disregard for self promotion is clearly a symptom of Google obscurity, but in the most sincere, albeit clichéd explanation, Russell Cameron prefers to let his horses do the talking.

Between them, in one fashion or another, they garnered the majority of newspaper ink and prizemoney on offer, winning seven Group Ones … including the two Cups and a Plate. against the likes of Hissing Sid, Ista Kareem, Ready to Lift, Miss Darcey, Golden Charmer and Bart’s Cup hopeful Think Money. “I trained him when I was in New Zealand and he ran some good races on dry tracks too,” Russell told a media more focused on the program’s following race. “I jumped him this morning and it sharpened him right up.
When asked what’s given him his biggest thrill in racing, Russell opts for Toledo’s Stradbroke victory but also nominates a horse called Mortolox who, for the vast majority or racegoers, has been lost in the mists of time. Backed in from 150-1 to 3-1 at post time, Mortolox – with Alf Matthews on board – landed a huge plunge for connections and in many ways marks Russell’s career as a trainer: walk softly and carry a big stick.
“I had him in the Geelong Cup In light of So You Think’s Cox last Wednesday but he had a bit Plate elevation (Cummings) KEEPING A SPRINTER ON THE BOIL and favourite Whobegotyou’s FOR THAT LENGTH OF TIME, AT capitulation (Kavanagh), little THAT LEVEL, IS PERHAPS RUSSELL’S space remained GREATEST ‘STATEMENT’ AS A TRAINER. for the likes of The Sportsman. Even the Schweppes Stakes-G2 battle between Apache Cat and Mic Mac warranted much more airplay than an Airways Cup. But the victory of The Sportsman on Cox Plate day would prove to be one of the great training feats of the carnival … testimony to the largely unheralded talent of one, Russell Cameron. A 7YO by Kilimanjaro, who – it’s probably fair to say – only produced modest results from eight seasons at stud in New Zealand, The Sportsman had not tasted a stakes victory prior to the Airways Cup and was a $31 outsider going into Group Two. He had run third in the Cranbourne Cup-LR at his previous start and won at Caulfield the start before that – taking his winning tally to nine (with 10 placings) – but was deemed to have little chance

of mucus in his trachea so we just scratched him and waited for this. “He’s performed well against good Listed horses in New Zealand so we thought he had a chance. “He’s certainly getting better this time.” To their own peril, many a punter has dismissed a Cameron contender over the past two decades, in particular his brilliant sprinter, Toledo. In the space of four years, Toledo would win three Group Ones for Russell: the Stradbroke (141), the Newmarket ($17) and Australia Stakes ($31) and finish runnerup in a further three. All up the son of At Talaq would capture close to $2.2 million in stakes.
He’s also wielded the ‘big stick’ with the likes of Apache King (Adelaide Cup), St Clemens Belle (Fruit ‘n’ Veg) and All Time High (Thousand Guineas) – nine Group One wins in all – but clearly the one that sticks in most memories is the old war horse Bomber Bill. From Christmas 1997 to the autumn of ’07, Bomber Bill campaigned in 98 races, winning 23 of them including the Karakatta Plate-G1 at two, the Australia Stakes-G1 at five and Goodwood-G1 as a seven year old. He would also win 12 other stakes races, his ‘signoff ’ being the Group Three Rubiton in January 2006 and, despite finishing last at his final outing – as an 11YO – Bomber Bill had remained competitive throughout: still giving them a show in the WFA Carlyon Stakes-G2 when fifth behind El Segundo three runs off retirement.

boil for that length of time, at that level, is perhaps Russell’s greatest ‘statement’ as a trainer. He’s a little vague when it comes to the number of winners since he took out his trainers’ licence in 1987 – “around 600 I guess” – and is typically laconic when asked his ‘favourite’ horse … “my next winner!” Like most superior horsemen, Russell was ‘born’ into racing with his father Ted, a leading trainer in South Australia with top notchers such as Grooming (Brisbane Cup), King of Brooklyn and Zephyr Art. Helping out at Ted’s stables, Russell was consigned to Swan Hill with a couple of horses one year for their carnival and “ended up staying 17 years”, setting up a satellite stable in the Riverina town. Eventually, Russell moved to Bendigo in 1989, where he stayed a season before heading back to home turf, taking boxes at Morphettville. 52
www.tracktotrack.com
In 1997 Russell was offered the opportunity to join John Sadler in the formation of the powerful Aquanita Stable at Flemington and that’s where he stayed until a carrot was dangled to establish a stable in Macau.
Moving back to Australia last year and taking up residence at Riverend Park on the outskirts of Melbourne, Russell found an offer of returning to a 34-box complex at Flemington simply too good to refuse.
“I was in Macau for a couple of years and intended on spending a season in Singapore before heading back to Australia, but then I got asked by Russell Warwick to join Westbury Stud in New Zealand as a private trainer.
Hanging out the shingle at headquarters since July, the winners have continued to flow with the likes of The Sportsman, Galaxy Guide, Zauberin, Testya Patience and Our Blue Ribbon all saluting in recent months.
“I’d trained a couple of horses for (Westbury Stud owner) Eric Watson in Australia and I ended up staying in New Zealand for five years.” (A brilliant businessman and owner of the New Zealand Warriors rugby league team, Watson is probably best remembered for giving Russell Crowe a gladiatorial hammering in a pub one night when the Cinderella Man bit off more than he could chew).
Despite a reluctance to push his own barrow, you sense a great deal of pride when Russell comments that a lot of his old owners have stuck by him with quite a few sending horses across from New Zealand. And why wouldn’t they? As Russell Cameron has proven time and again, there’s another Toledo, Bomber Bill or The Sportsman just waiting around the corner.

special report
KEEPING YO
SAFE IN
The devastating bush fires in Victoria in early 2009 resulted in serious injury and death to both humans and horses. Bush fires have become an unwanted summer occurrence in many areas of Australia and this season is shaping up to be a high risk period as well. Many of the horses suffered from burns to their hooves, although they survived the fire itself.
A
LT H O U G H THE COUNTRY AND RURAL Fire Services in each state have recommended evacuation procedures in the face of a bush fire during the highest risk CATASTROPHIC fire danger conditions, horses and other animals must also be considered during any evacuation to a safer area. There are simple guidelines to reduce both the risk of bush fire sweeping across your property or starting a spot fire, as well as steps to minimise the harm to your horses.
54
www.tracktotrack.com
1. Stables and Horse Yards In the lead up to the high risk season, clean up leaf and tree debris in yards and around stables to reduce the combustible fuel load. Clean the gutters. Keep the stables free of cobwebs and material that can easily catch fire. Store hay away from the outside walls of the stables – pack it so the hay is covered with sheets of iron (not plastic) or inside the stable in a protected room. 2. Identify Your Horses - Many horses are now microchipped, but if your horse is not, consider getting an identifying microchip inserted. Record your horse’s
Don’t Leave it until the Fire is Raging - If high risk condition are expected, move your horses s a safer area – e.g. paddocks wi to th minimal grass and deciduous European trees, which are safer than Eucalypts and Pine trees as they are less likely to catch fire from ember showers.
brands and take a photo of your horse(s) and keep it in a safe place so that you have a record for identification. In an emergency situation, a plastic key tag on a headstall or tied in the mane is cheap & the hard plastic won’t melt. An engraved metal ‘dog tag’ is preferred. Write his name and your phone number (mobile) and address on the reverse side with a black waterproof pen. 3. Set Out an Evacuation Route - Make an evacuation plan before the fire season. Consult with your local Fire Authority and your neighbours/friends to develop an evacuation plan. Identify a safe path,
OUR HORSE
N A FIRE clear of dry debris and fuel for a fire, from your paddocks or stables on which you can walk your horses off your property. Have leads and head stalls ready to move your horse(s). After the evacuation, make your horse as comfortable as possible, preferably in the company of other horses. Provide dampened hay and water at ground level to encourage airway drainage. Carefully check the hooves for signs of searing or burns, as the hooves are the most vulnerable to long term damage if they are exposed
Carry a Torch and Mobile Phone -It is mandatory to have a torch if the smoke is thick or if the fire is burning at night. Ensure you have a torch with new batteries ready to go during the evacuation. Carry a mobile phone so you can contact Fire Authorities, family or friends during the evacuation. Also carry a mask for yourself. A wet muslin flap attached to the nose band and hanging down over the horse’s nostrils may reduce your horse inhaling hot air, airborne particles and smoke.
to hot ground in the wake of the fire. Consult your vet for advice early - don’t wait to see if the burns or hoof searing gets better. 4. Protect Your Horses during Evacuation - If you have to walk your horse(s) to safety in the midst of a fire storm, or following the fire, you must keep your horses as safe and protected as possible: • Use only leather headstalls (plastic/nylon ones can melt) and long cotton lead ropes – wet the ropes. • Remove plastic fly shields – fit string veils and wet them before moving the horses near the fire. • Place a cotton or canvas rug for body protection – wet it thoroughly – prevent the horse’s body being burned – do not use a synthetic rug. • Dampen towels to hold over their noses and heads. • Do not turn your horse free onto a road during a fire as it is illegal to do so and it may cause an accident or suffer injury to itself. • Wrap the hooves in cotton bandages – saturate the bandages with water and take a watering can of water
special report
Organise Food and Water in the Safe Holding Area -It is important to ensure that your horses have food and water ready at the holding area. Pre-arrange for enough hay for 3-5 days and drums of water to be stored at the holding area or a nearby property. to regularly wet the hooves when walking on hot ground. Wet the horse’s mane, tail and legs before walking out. Protect yourself with sturdy boots, gloves, hat (a hard hat or riding helmet if possible), wet your clothes and wear a dust mask to avoid smoke inhalation.. 5. Ensure that You can Arrange Room on a Horse Float Many of the horses which were burnt in fires could not be evacuated because they could not be transported off the property in the period before the fire. Arrange with friends to share a float(s) and pre-arrange a collection or pick up point with a safe evacuation route to a park or less risky holding area. Relocate mares and foals and aged horses as early as possible before the fire if the conditions are catastrophic. If you have to leave horse(s) behind, try to ensure they are in the safest possible area – e.g. a paddock with a dam of water and a clear space around it. - Courtesy of Kohnke’s Own www.tracktotrack.com

» Encouraging a horse to drink after exercise
Studies have indicated that horses prefer to drink lukewarm water containing 2 tablespoonfuls of sale per litre when hot after exercise or travelling to rehydrate themselves. Horses will become accustomed to drinking this ‘saline’ water and will seek to drink it rather than molasses ‘sweet’ cold water.
