Try Ulcer Aid Today!
ORDER ONLINE Causes and Why?? Horse's Get Ulcers Acid released in the stomach in the absence of feed is thought to be the main factor in the disease. Horses evolved as grazing animals, constantly eating high roughage diets. However, a majority of the time this just isn’t possible and our modern racing stables horses are often confined and fed 2 hard feeds a day with low levels of roughage - their stomach is often empty for many hours of the day and stomach acid is continuously secreted, which can irritate and ulcerate the stomach lining. With no eating there is no chewing, so there is less saliva to neutralise the acid. As the acid splashes across the upper side of the stomach it eats away the lining to form, sometimes within days, deep bleeding ulcers, this pain leads to the list of clinical signs mentioned in this brochure. A stomach ulcer is an area where the membrane comprised of mucus producing cells has been eroded away and the acid has been able to attack the muscular wall beneath. This causes pain and inflammation and can cause bleeding into the stomach which is debilitating and can be potentially life threatening. The horse's stomach is similar to ours except there are two regions. One region is coated with a thicker type of lining than the other, which is largely lined with glandular cells. This glandular portion is most similar to our own stomach. The stomach lining produces both acid and mucus. The mucus protects the lining cells from being damaged by the acid which is necessary to help digest food. Horses produce small amounts of acid all of the time compared to other species which produce acid primarily when they eat. This makes sense when we consider that horses are "designed" to eat most of time since they are grazing animals. Stress increases the amount of acid being produced in the stomach. In addition, certain commonly used anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as phenylbutazone ("bute"), Flunixin, banamine or ketofen dipyrone, aspirin may decrease the amount of mucus produced in the stomach. Severe Ulcers can develop in as little as 5 days. Nervy horses seem to have a higher risk of stomach ulcers, due to the stress of training together with the high energy feeds.

Symptoms or Signs Of Gastric Ulcers Nervousness/irritation Loose stools – not formed. Poor looking or dry coat. A change in eating behaviour. Grinding teeth and/or, excessive chewing on objects or tongue. They are girthy. Mild to moderate colic. Biting soil in the day yard – Has you thinking they are lacking in something? Washing or dunking food in water bucket. Fail to gain or maintain weight. Ill-thrift in foals. Not eating as well as usual and quite often they will eat hay/pasture, but will not eat the grain and concentrate, or will only eat the latter very slowly. Lowered red blood cell count and haemoglobin levels, this is because if ulcers are bleeding, the blood is lost into the bowel and then out in the manure. Not performing as well as they had been, has trained off. Blood in the manure - if the horse has a history of being on NSAIDs (bute etc) due to a musculoskeletal problem (eg. severe and chronic lameness). This can be due to bleeding ulcers in the large intestine (specifically in a place called the “right dorsal colon”).

Conversely, the longer they stall on the not-so-commerciallyattractive , the better the discount. It should actually be the other way around with early adopters getting the better discount, or at the very least, equitable with what is offered by season’s end. After all, it leaves a nasty taste in your mouth if you’ve signed on the dotted line by April / May only to find you could have gotten it much, much cheaper by September / October. And the old chestnut (metaphoric not literal) of “book early to ensure a spot” simply doesn’t wash. It’s a fairly fickle world out there with some stallions going from flavour of the month to on the nose in the blink of an eye, but studs would ensure a semblance of brand loyalty if returning clientele were assured they would be looked after. Over the next two issues, we will list all the stud open days as they come to hand and, to ensure your stud doesn’t miss the bus, phone the Track To Track office on 1300 859 987 for your free listing. Yes … free. Won’t even cost you a sausage sandwich or a glass of wine!

The global juggernaut – also known as Darley – snared another Group One during the South Australian racing carnival when Kidnapped returned a winner in the $300,000 Betfair.com South Australian Derby. But while the ownership bespeaks stratospheric wealth, Kidnapped’s origins are a tad more humble.

OR THOSE WHO remember what life was like before iPods and wide screen TVs, Peter Ford is a mix of Gary Cooper and Jimmy Stewart with a pinch of Chips Rafferty. As laid back as last week and laconic to a fault, Peter knows his horses and is a bloodstock agent of some repute. Hardly surprising when you consider his old man, Frank, was also an agent – and arguably the first to establish real ties with Asian buyers – while so is his older brother, John. >>

After slipping another Testa Rossa foal, owners made the decision to sell the mare on and Peter organised a private sale with Woodlands Stud for an undisclosed sum. Once again, it’s fairly safe to assume the undisclosed sum was considerably more than he’d pay for a Blazer outfit, Jayco caravan or a tent.
Peter’s nous is relied upon by a growing array of leading owners and breeders: Peter Murray of Blazer fame, Jayco’s Gerry Ryan and Harry The Hirer, Rick Jamieson.

Post sale uses aside, it’s what’s inside those covers that will ensure the crowds flock to the Gold Coast again in 2010. All jokes aside about sales malaise – especially for those who have been on the road since Christmas – it appears to be an ideal time to stage an auction of this ilk: weanlings and yearlings are well grown and mares are only a month or three away from dropping or being covered. One thing is for sure: despite its status as one of the newer sales on the calendar, the National has managed to establish its bona fides in relatively quick order. Weanlings which have gone through the National school include Swiss Ace, Murtajil, Chartreux, Exceptionally, Shellscrape, Dr Doute’s, Graceful Anna and Impressive Jeuney, while yearling alumni range from Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, Heavenly Glow, Tell a Tale, The Jackal, Speedy Natalie and Illuminates to Champion Singapore performer and world class sprinter, Rocket Man, and the eight time stakes winning mare, Princess Coup.
A HALF BROTHER TO GROUP WINNING 2YO PSYCHOLOGIST (LOT 34) IS AVAILABLE FROM BYLONG PARK
SOLD FOR $260,000 AS A YEARLING, PRINCESS COUP WOULD GO ON TO WIN $3,842,694 IN STAKES AND – SOMEWHAT FITTINGLY – WAS KNOCKED DOWN FOR $3,000,000 IN THE SAME RING ALMOST FOUR YEARS TO THE DAY LATER.
now stands at with a Group One under her girth strap. Similar story for Cinque Cento: she had a Group Three and a Group One second from 14 starts in her account when dispatched to the National in 2006 and while the new owners had to wait almost 12 months to get their $255,000 back, the mare did up and win the Group One Doomben Cup. She now has a More Than Ready weanling colt and is in foal to Hussonet: either or both of which should bring big, big money when it’s time for them to head to the ring. >> www.tracktotrack.com

Although broodie speculation is pinhooking of a different cloth, Magic Millions Managing Director, David Chester, proudly states that the more traditional kind of ‘short term’ purchasing is rife at the Nationals. Little wonder. Chester provides three examples of turning a small fortune large (often a contradiction in terms in this game!), pointing to the $80,000 weanling that was sold for $620,000 as a yearling, the $260,000 weanling which made $NZ1.05 million as a yearling and, thirdly, the $1.15 million weaner that returned $2.2 million in the yearling ring. Naturally we don’t dwell on the pinhooking path scattered with broken dreams, but if ever a venue is suited to fast racehorses and faster returns, it’s the National.
QTIS Eligable Stable QB 3-4 Harrisville Lodge Pty Ltd 0414 310 929 or 07 3279 0488, QLD Consequently, all of Australia’s major vendors are represented in some fashion or another, while all the crack stallions have progeny there too: Redoute’s Choice, Stratum, Encosta de Lago, More Than Ready, Fastnet Rock, Hussonet, Flying Spur … Chester is also quick to point out that this is the last chance to ‘buy a ticket’ for the $5.15 million Magic Millions race series, particularly a yearling for the $2 million 2YO Classic in 2011. STALLION WATCH
COUBERTIN
VICTORIA’S BARON Kristen Manning profiles the exciting new stallion for Victoria’s Greta West Stud.
B
y a champion sire from a prolific sire line … son of a Group One mare … brother to two international Group One winners … a family in form.
What more could you ask of a first season stallion standing at a fee priced to suit the owner/breeder? Not much! Which is why Greta West Stud’s new boy Coubertin is likely to prove very popular – this good looking bay already settling in well at the northern Victorian farm. Well regarded by his trainer Tony Vasil, Coubertin won a Cranbourne trial prior to debut, but didn’t have a whole lot of luck in his handful of starts. Winning twice from seven outings, Coubertin would also finish on their heels in the Listed Adelaide Guineas at Morphettville. Coubertin obviously did not reach the heights of his more famous older brothers – Haradasun and Elvstroem - but Vasil was always taken with his athleticism: “he was 28
www.tracktotrack.com
slow to mature and didn’t show the turn of foot of the others, but he was a better mover than those two.” Named after Baron de Coubertin, father of the modern Olympics, Coubertin is a son of Danehill’s outstanding sire Redoute’s Choice. A four times Group One winning champion sire, Redoute’s Choice has been well represented by 62 stakes winners (17 Group One winners) and he is an emerging sire of sires with the likes of Stratum, Snitzel, Not A Single Doubt, God’s Own, Bradbury’s Luck, Al Samer, Legion and Marmottan all siring winners. Standing at 16.1hh, Coubertin is from a family that just keeps producing high class gallopers. His dam is the wonderful Marscay mare Circles Of Gold, winner of six races including the Group One AJC Oaks. Second in another three Group One races including the Caulfield Cup, Circles Of Gold has proven a prepotent broodmare –
producing five winners including the high class travellers Haradasun and Elvstroem. Winning eight Group One races between them, they both notched up international success – Elvstroem in the Dubai Duty Free-G1 and Haradasun too strong in the Queen Anne Stakes-G1 at Royal Ascot. Both horses have proven popular at stud, serving large books. Elvstroem, whose oldest progeny are 3YOs, has already made his mark with 35 winners including
STALLION WATCH
N
the stakes winners Carrara, Viking Legend and Innocent Gamble. Haradasun, meanwhile, is being prepared for his third season at stud, having served 231 mares in his first two years at Coolmore. Circles of Gold, who is also grandam of the exciting filly Valdemoro (twice Group One runner up to Faint Perfume), hails from a prolific family whose current star is the dual Group One winning sprinter/ miler Starspangledbanner, who is currently in the United Kingdom.
B
aron Pierre de Coubertin is considered the father of the Modern Olympic Games which kicked off in Athens in 1896 – a break of some millennium and a half (the ancient Olympics were held from 776 BC to either 261 or 393 AD).
Other members of this excellent family include the big race winners Bit Of A Skite, Markus Maximus and Polar Success. Coubertin makes his debut at a fee of $4,400 – standing alongside King Of Prussia, Man Of Illusion and Dangerous. For further information, phone Laurie McCarthy at Greta West Stud on 0410 476 196 or visit www.gretaweststud.com.au
The Baron, who hailed from an aristocratic French family, devised the famous Olympic rings (used for the first time in Amsterdam in 1920) which is a slight transmutation of Circles of Gold. When he died in 1937, de Coubertin was buried in Lausanne, but in accordance with his will, his heart was buried separately in Olympia. And here’s one for the pub quiz: de Coubertin won a gold medal at the 1912 summer Olympics … for literature!

SPECIAL FEATURE
BEYOND
THE GLAMOUR
“TONY CARTER SMITH” In this industry if you haven’t heard of Tony Carter Smith then you’re either not a breeder, live outside Victoria or come from another planet. No, I am not kidding that’s how well known he is to the horse industry here in Victoria. Almost every thoroughbred and harness racing breeder knows of and calls on Tony to brand their foals every year in Victoria. In fact he is almost a household name when branding time comes around again.
H
AV E Y O U noticed that brand on the horses shoulder coming back after winning a race at the Cup Carnival, chances are it was put there by TCS. Tony grew up in the Victorian town of Mortlake with his parents and three sisters, his father Stuart Carter Smith a successful trainer himself taught Tony most of his horse skills and knowledge which would come in very useful once Tony left school for a career in the horse industry. When he did leave school Tony spent the next 10 years furthering his experience with various top trainers including 5 years with the legendary T.J.Smith where he strapped and rode trackwork and regularly travelled interstate with T.J’s horses. He recalls having to exercise two horses morning and night around the suburban streets of Brisbane, he would be riding Mighty Kingdom and be leading Kingston Town at the same time. (Just a couple of pretty good horses!!) Along with TJ Smith, Tony also spent 18 months strapping with Angus Armanasco and short stints with Bart Cummings and Neville Begg.
30
www.tracktotrack.com
When he was 21 the travel itch set in and Tony spent a year in England working as a strapper and riding out, he also rode to hounds once in full hunting outfit whilst in Ireland. After England it was on to a 12-month stint and a very different lifestyle on a horse stud in Saudi Arabia. After initially starting in Horse Dentistry in 1982 Tony went into horse branding in 1984 with Harness Racing Vic whilst working for himself branding thoroughbreds and other horse breeds. In 1984 he would be involved in the branding of around 5000 standardbreds for HRV but now the figures have dropped to around 2000 a year. With his experience, Tony is the main brander called on to brand foals for most of Victoria’s thoroughbred studs and he says his figures are in the thousands each year. He remembers branding Apache Cat as a foal mainly due to his markings and more than likely he has branded many of our top racehorses over the years but keeping track of them is a big job. Although Tony brands only in Vic he still supplies brands for owners Australia wide. These days Tony resides on a small property in the Kilmore
SPECIAL FEATURE
His lifelong ambition was always to be a trainer and knowing the industry is a tough one he realised he also had to have another job to eat. His view of the racing industry in the last 3 years reflects the general dilemma being experienced country wide of smaller trainers being squeezed out of their jobs due to costs or loss of facilities to train in their area. district where, when he has time (not sure when that is) he trains a small team of thoroughbreds as a hobby and over the past ten or so years he has had wins with Arkadian, Curving, Theatre Rose, Shinjuku, Slither and Little Miss Attitude.
He would like to see smaller towns being able to retain trainers, which would encourage more owners and more employment within the industry as he feels that there is a general lack of experienced racing industry staff available.
MAC PAD
Tony claims although working amongst the top trainers gave him valuable insight into the industry his greatest teacher and mentor was his father Stuart. You can still find Tony occasionally at the major horse sales casting his eye over the yearlings looking for another winner to add to his team and who better to pick one than the man who has probably seen nearly every horse in Victoria over the years. Knowing Tony as we do, with his quiet demeanour and athletic prowess in catching the foals, I realise what a valuable asset he is to us in the industry. BY CHRIS NEVILL

CATHY HAINS Carrying on the
tradition
The Hains clan has been involved with some of the finest horses to race in Australia over the past four decades, including the immortal Kingston Town. Now Cathy Hains speaks to STEVE MORAN about putting Burnewang North on the map.
T
HE HAINS FAMILY name has long been linked to not only success in the Australian racing and breeding sphere, but also for the ability to think outside the square. Whether that be mating a German mare by the name of Ada Hunter to Bletchingly to produce the immortal Kingston Town or sending mares to Kentucky matings to produce a Melbourne Cup winner (Kingston Rule) and a Victoria Derby winner (Portland Player) ... doing things a little differently (successfully) has been a trademark of David Hains’ Kingston Park Stud.
And now it may well be daughter Cathy who upholds that tradition if the early results from her property, Burnewang North Pastoral – between Elmore and Rochester in Northern Victoria – is any guide. The leading vendor by average at the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale is some achievement in only its second full year of operation … not to mention the official acclaim of best overall draft. This a platform from which Burnewang North can only grow according to the go-getting Cathy Hains who has cut the umbilical cord, in some sense, by independently operating this
(relatively) new venture with her all girl crew at the top: Lorraine Swanson managing the stud and Tanya Edwards the office. Cathy explains the background to setting up away from the family’s spiritual home on the Mornington Peninsula: “I was involved with Kingston Park when my father decided to locate a northern property where we could expand his plans for a stallion operation, grow our own fodder and capitalise on the climate. “We found Burnewang North and I pretty much fell in love with the property and the area from the beginning. I spent a lot of time here and when >>

BURNEWANG NORTH HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AS MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER HORSE PROPERTY
Dad decided to outsource the stallions and wind back to an operation based at Merricks North, I purchased the property. “The Northern Victorian area has ideal food production conditions – from the great Shiraz wines coming from Heathcote (40 minutes south of Elmore) – to the home of the Sunshine Harvester and largest hay growing region in Victoria; and further north to the traditionally dairy town of Rochester which is also home to some of the largest tomato growers in the state. “All up it’s a great district and our property itself is capable of growing just about anything … plus the huge clean pastures, warm temperate climate and the
34

passion with which we approach all aspects of the property make it, in my opinion, an excellent home for our band of 40 mares and their offspring.” A strong sales pitch indeed, but one that is anything but lacking in supporting data. Confidence and enthusiasm appear to be family traits! And given the Hains disposition to differ, Burnewang North has been developed (and is developing) as more than just another horse property. “I am also very interested and involved in the farming side of our operation and we are constantly challenged by researching different means of coping with the challenges that are part and parcel of primary production.
“All that conjecture aside, I am passionate about this property and a true believer that it is the very best place for us to grow bloodstock and livestock and crops to contribute to the food bowl as well.” The property – 2500 acres of prime pasture, lucerne and irrigated crops – is full on in terms of its commercial application. “Burnewang North is a fully commercial operation,” Cathy adds, “in that we try to sell everything we breed and produce (including fat lambs, cattle and commercial crops, lucerne and oaten hay). We are private in the sense that we do not take any outside horses. “Whilst we do not have any plans to do much racing, we have taken a share in one yearling we sold in
INDUSTRY PROFILE
2009 and another we sold this year and have a couple of other twoyear-olds that didn’t sell for one reason or another: but our plan is certainly to sell rather than race.” Burnewang’s first offerings from its small but select broodmare band were in 2009, while this year, at the Melbourne premier sale, four of their seven yearlings made six figures … and two topped $200,000. The top two were the Flying Spur - Lady Susannah filly who went to Peter Moody for $220,000 and another filly by Stratum from Coupe who was purchased by Ross and Clinton McDonald. “We were delighted with our results this year and they surpassed our expectations. We hope that topping the Melbourne Premier and Autumn Sales in only our second year of operation is most significant in terms of market recognition. Certainly it was a very positive result in the eyes of our colleagues, our peers and our buyers. “We decided to target the Victorian market exclusively and think this was the right decision for us in terms of our product and branding. Whilst we have tried to gather a nice group of young mares and breed them with regard to their market position, I believe it is the significant advantages under which they develop on this beautiful property and quality of care they receive that has resulted in them being selected ‘best overall draft’ and selling accordingly. “Our four leaf brand – which was unknown in early 2009 – is now pretty well recognised around the
southern part of the sales arena by vendors and buyers.
THIS A PLATFORM FROM WHICH BURNEWANG NORTH CAN ONLY GROW ACCORDING TO THE GOGETTING CATHY HAINS WHO HAS CUT THE UMBILICAL CORD, IN SOME SENSE, BY INDEPENDENTLY OPERATING THIS (RELATIVELY) NEW VENTURE WITH HER ALL GIRL CREW
“The proof will be in the pudding of course, but so far we have had three to run for a debut winner in New Zealand (Flaxton), a second in the $100,000 Inglis 2YO Feature at Seymour with Reallen and we have Apres who was turned out after debuting in the Blue Diamond Prelude. She is back in work and is in fact the one we liked most … and have a share in! “Hopefully others in our 2009 draft will be hitting the track in the next six months.” Flaxton (Falvelon - Hello Boys) has had one start for one win in New Zealand under the care of Mandy and Matt Brown while Reallen (Real Jester - Aliana) was runner-up in the Inglis feature (for Allan Waymouth) at her second start in April and has not appeared since. Apres is by Snitzel from the Hains city winner, Meribel, who has produced four winners including the smart Amerryking. Hope is one thing in the breeding game, while planning and realism can be the cornerstones of success, all of which Hains takes on board. “The aim, of course, is to improve our broodmare band, but it is very difficult and expensive to buy stakes mares in Australia … so, we will hope to supplement with good quality mares where we can and rely on their progeny to add value. Stallion selection is naturally another critical factor. “As with every aspect of the operation, a lot of time and analysis goes into choosing the right stallions for the right mares. >>

TRAINERS REPORT
STEVEN BURRIDG Hard work and initiative is paying dividends for former Group One winning jockey Steven Burridge. STEVE MORAN caught up with the expat trainer in Singapore.
T
And, now, in Singapore a similar story is unfolding: led by a man whose name, admittedly, is not as familiar as that of Size.
The chorus rose to cacophony when John Size did the ‘undoable’ in 20012002 - winning the Hong Kong trainers’ premiership in his first season. It had not been before ... nor since.
But Steven Burridge, the quiet achiever, is perhaps now on the verge of doing the unimaginable - dethroning Laurie Laxon as Singapore’s premier trainer.
Size is joined by John Moore and David Hall, whose Hong Kong successes have kept the choir busy, while jockeys Darren Beadman, Brett Prebble and Zac Purton have rightly had their praises sung.
Expat Kiwi Laxon has won the premiership six seasons straight and he ain’t relinquishing the title just yet but, at the time of writing, he was 11 winners behind the 55 year-old premiership leader Burridge. >>
HE SUCCESS OF Australian trainers and jockeys in Asia’s two major racing jurisdictions Hong Kong and Singapore – during the past decade has been loudly trumpeted throughout the region and made household names of some of the trailblazers.

Maybe that’s because Australia has not been his permanent home for more than 20 years, or because it’s 26 years since he won the Group One Oakleigh Plate on Mighty Avalanche as a jockey.

Departing for South East Asia not long after his Oakleigh Plate victory, Burridge had his first taste of Malaysian racing in 1987 when he rode on a visiting

“It’s all been a great ride and now it’s wonderful to be part of Singapore racing which is getting better and better all the time. I can do the Turf Club’s PR: the

jockey’s permit. It was that same year that he rode one of the greats to win his maiden on debut at Seymour: a horse called Super Impose. Burridge was a more than capable jockey who followed in the footsteps of his father Harold – riding more than 1000 winners – but many might argue he’s proving to be even better as a trainer. “Guess you could say that now,” Burridge conceded, ”I do love training them and we’re having a great year which is very satisfying. “We’ve got a good raft of young horses and hopefully there’s still some bullets to fire in the second half of the year, but I’m not thinking too much about premierships just yet.” The Burridge yard is hands on to say the least with he and his English born wife Julie riding much of the trackwork and his son Wade, a bloodstock agent, advising clients and assisting in acquiring horses. And Team Burridge has certainly worked hard in recent seasons to advance from hovering in the top 10 to now threatening King Laxon. 40
www.tracktotrack.com
always play a part in this game,” said Burridge who has only held a full Singapore licence since 2003. Former Melbourne journalist Craig Brennan, now with the Singapore Turf Club, says Burridge is reaping the reward for his work ethic. “There is no-one who works harder than Steve. He is usually the first on the track each morning and very much hands on. He has gradually assembled a better quality team and with the help of his son Wade they are really starting to get the results. “It’s now realistic that he could win the title but, as everybody knows, Laurie (Laxon) won’t give up easily,” Brennan said. Burridge has seen it all in this ‘fantasyland’ we call horse racing - from riding in Macau to earning an income selling horses into Hong Kong and Macau after some guidance from Jeff Gordon. As an assistant trainer, he gained valuable experience with the likes of Mick Kent and Claude Charlet and has graduated from Kuala Lumpur to the grander stage of Singapore where Queen Elizabeth presented him with the trophy for the 2006 QEII Cup he won with King And Kings.
prizemoney is very good and with rebates from the Club you can keep training costs relatively low. There’s no better place to own a horse than Singapore,” Burridge added. Burridge’s success this season has come at a time when the competition has never been stronger. Aside from Laxon and fellow Kiwi, Stephen Gray, and South African Pat Shaw, he is challenged for owners and winners by successful Aussie expats including John Meagher, Cliff Brown, Michael Freedman, Brian Dean, Len Treloar and one the early Singapore pioneers, Don Baerstchiger. The championship may not be in the bag, but Burridge just might lead a clean sweep for Australians in Hong Kong and Singapore with John Size and Brett Prebble the premiership in Hong Kong, while Vlad Duric is challenging in second place on the Singapore jockeys’ premiership. All in all it’s been a good year for the Aussies, but perhaps most of all for Steven Burridge. “Let’s just keep going.”

HORSEMAN'S CORNER
No slip ups!
T
H E SINGLE MOST important thing a racehorse needs is sound legs. Therefore, the protection of
same is vital.
One New Zealand based company, owned by Graeme and Michelle Paterson, acted upon this imperative some 10 years ago and began laying a substance on the floor of their barns to help prevent injury and fatigue. 42
www.tracktotrack.com
Back then both were keen eventers and show jumpers. Graeme was so good he was an A-grader in ever competitive New Zealand. Nowadays they still compete in dressage, but their product has been the real winner in their lives and has been embraced by some of the biggest names in the thoroughbred industry. Called Superior Rubber Surfaces, the Patersons have managed to
establish a thriving little industry out of their home. And Aussies are now able to access a product which aims at making life under foot for racehorses a lot safer … and way more comfortable. “The business has certainly snowballed since we developed our own sealer to place on top of the rubber flooring,” explained Michelle. “Once Rick Williams at The Oaks Stud here in New Zealand asked us to put it down in all his barns, the business with the thoroughbreds has been pretty hectic.” The Patersons have Sir Patrick Hogan at Cambridge Stud,

which is obviously softer for the horses and would be ideal as a rehab box. One of the real positives that the Patersons are finding with
“Basically, the noise is reduced dramatically and we do not have any cracks so it is very safe for the horses to be on. And the sealer we have developed, that goes over the top, prevents any slip and stops any dung getting into little crevices: because there are no crevices.” The Patersons can do walkways, walkers, stalls, tie ups, barns ... pretty much anything you want. They nearly always use black, but can dye it to any colour that suits. “Some trainers have started using it on walls to have an all round safer box.” The rubber matting is laid between 12 to 15 millimeters thick. If trainers or studmasters want it slightly thicker they can,

the flooring relates to aquacises. Trainers seem to be leaning more and more to water training and the Patersons’ surfaces assist greatly because horses do not slip: “Yes we are getting more and more orders for aqua type walkers.” The

horse people since childhood, understand what horses need. They are very familiar with the type of surface a racehorse or stallion needs and have opened their doors to Australian business: “We are happy to fly over to Oz as soon as someone wants to use our products and we have just signed a contract at Caloundra to do eight horse walkers on the track. And we man the phones or email all the time because we work out of our home,” Michelle adds. “The welfare of the racehorse is paramount for success.” In this cut and thrust business where a slight cut or an anxious thrust can stop a horse from racing, this new and proven matting and sealer does look the answer for many situations. Bay, 2005 Boundary (USA) – Mien (USA) (Nureyev USA)) Standing: Vinery, NSW Ph: (02) 6543 8333 2010 fee: $44,00 (incl gst) www.vinery.com.au
Australia does not regularly play host to Kentucky Derby winning stallions and Vinery are proud to welcome to their 2010 roster one of the best recent winners of that world famous race. A high class galloper beaten only once in seven starts, Big Brown was successful at Gr.1 level on four occasions – as well as the Derby taking out the Florida Derby, the Preakness and Haskell Invitation as well as the Derby.
A winner on dirt and turf, Big Brown was strong, gutsy and determined. Bred on a 3 X 3 cross of Northern Dancer, Big Brown is by Danzig’s dual Gr.3 winning son Boundary – successful sire of 23 stakes winners. His dam Mien is by the influential Nureyev out of the stakes placed mare Miasma from the immediate family of the triple Gr.1 winner Hidden Lake.
Further back this family – one to whom Mien is line-bred – has produced the outstanding stallions Sadler’s Wells, Fairy King,Thatching and Nureyev.
DUSTY MOON
Chestnut, 2005 Moon Rocket – Zaozip (Zephyr Zip) Standing: Burwood Stud, Qld Ph: (07) 4693 1309 2010 fee: $2,200 (incl gst) www.burwoodstud.com
Dying after just three seasons at stud, the well related Zabeel stallion Moon Rocket made his mark in a short time – with just 56 named foals represented by 52 runners and 31 winners. A son of the dual stakes winning Danehill mare Skyrocket and half brother to the Japanese stakes winner Meteor Burst, he hailed from the family of the big race winners Dance Hero, Casey Belle, Asgard, Honey Belle, Eskimo Queen, Anamato, Drum, Grand Armee and Absolute Champion.
Tough stakes winners Macknuckle and Miss Watagan have flown the flag for Moon Rocket and fans of the breed now have access to his lightly raced but talented son Dusty Moon. A horse who found early form at two, in the placings at his first couple of starts, Dusty Moon won as a juvenile over 1350m at Doomben. During his short career he displayed versatility in racing style, handling a variety of track conditions. With a pedigree containing some
of the big names of breeding – Sir Tristram, Danehill, Biscay, Northern Dancer and Sir Ivor – Dusty Moon is out of the multiple city winning mare Zaozip from the family of the European Gr.1 winners Huntingdale (sire of Gold Brose) and Master Willie (sire of Deputy Governor).

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
First Season Sires 2010 Part 3 cont. MEDAGLIA D’ORO (USA)
Bay, 1999 El Prado (USA) – Cappucino Bay (USA) (Bailjumper USA) Standing: Darley, NSW Ph: (02) 6543 9000 2010 fee: $88,000 (incl gst) www.darleyaustralia.com
In the headlines in the US as sire of Horse Of The Year Rachel Alexander, Medaglia D’Oro is by no means a one horse stallion – as his record of siring three other Gr.1 winners and a total of 17 stakes winners attests. Also sire of the big race winners Gabby’s Golden Gal, Warrior’s Reward and Passion For Gold, Medaglia D’Oro is the only Gr.1 son of the excellent stallion El Prado standing in Australia this spring.
Winner of the Gr.1 National Stakes at The Curragh, El Prado has proven himself one of Sadler’s Wells’ best sire sons with 70 stakes winners. The winner of eight races – three at Gr.1 level, Medaglia D’Oro is out of the stakes wining mare Cappucino Bay from the immediate family of the Gr.1 winner Travelling Music. This is also the family of the Gr.1
stars Indian Skimmer, Missy’s Mirage, Classy Mirage, Java Gold, Timely Writer, Timely Assertion, Silent Screen, All Will Be Well, Dolphin Street and Bluebird who fared extremely well at stud, siring 73 stakes winners.
MINT LANE
Bay, 2005 Maria’s Mon (USA) – Sister Girl (USA) (Conquistador Cielo USA) Standing: Willow Grove, SA Ph: (08) 8389 7084 2010 fee: $6,600 (incl gst) www.willowgrovestud.com.au
What great timing for Willow Grove: just days before the Kentucky Derby success of Super Saver, the SA based stud announced the acquisition of a new stallion by the same sire as that exciting three-year-old – Maria’s Mon. A highly successful sire represented by 45 stakes winners including the Gr.1 winners Super Saver, Monarchos, See How She Runs, What A While, Latent Heat, Monzantae and Monba, Maria’s Mon won twice at Gr.1 level – taking out the Belmont Futurity
56

and the Champagne Stakes and earning the title of US Champion 2Y0. A natural on pacer who carried his speed over the mile, Mint Lane won the Gr.2 Belmont Dwyer by 2¾ lengths, the Listed Postponed Stakes by 5¾ lengths, an allowance by 8½ lengths and his maiden by 6¾ lengths. A US$270,000 Keeneland yearling, Mint Lane is line-bred to the high class race mare High Voltage and he is a descendant of the acclaimed matriarch Pretty Polly.
He can count amongst his close relations the Gr.1 winners Gorgeous, Swift Temper, Seaside Attraction, Golden Attraction, Cape Town, Desert Lord, Flashing and the globe-trotting champ Fantastic Light.
FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
RAHEEB
Chestnut, 2003 Royal Academy (USA) – Gatana (Marauding) Standing: Patinack Farm, NSW Ph: (02) 9222 7000 2010 fee: $8,800 (incl gst) www.patinackfarm.com
A particularly good looking chestnut, Raheeb retires to Patinack as the winner of four races and over $350,000 in stakes. On the strength of impressive trial performances, Raheeb was sent out an odds on favourite at his first two starts, winning both in easy fashion. At just his fourth outing a half neck second in the Gr.2 Phar Lap Stakes, he quickly progressed through the classes. A Gr.3 winner of the Cameron Handicap at Newcastle and the Listed Herald Sun Stakes at
Flemington, Raheeb was also in the placings at black type level on five occasions. He rarely ran a bad race, at his final outing finishing a close up fourth in the Gr.1 Toorak Handicap. Like the successful and popular young stallion Bel Esprit, Raheeb is by Nijinsky II’s outstanding son Royal Academy – July Cup and Breeders Cup Mile winning sire of 156 stakes winners including 21 Gr.1 winners.
His dam is the dual Listed winning Gr.1 placed Marauding mare Gatana, also dam of the Gr.3 winning juvenile Piccadilly Circus – in turn dam of the two times Gr.1 winning stallion Fastnet Rock who has sired nine stakes winners in his first two crops.
TURFFONTEIN
Chestnut, 2004 Johannesburg (USA) – Spirit Of Grace (Dr Grace NZ) Standing: Blue Gum Farm,Vic Ph: (03) 5795 3331 2010 fee: $13,750 (incl gst) www.bluegumfarm.com.au
A horse who always caught the eye on the track, the handsome Turffontein retires to Blue Gum Farm as a five times winner of over $1.2 million in stakes. Tough and classy, Turffontein found form early at two, winning his second start at Rosehill on his way to a Gr.3 third in the Golden Rose in his first preparation. Improving as he matured, he added to his record wins in the Listed Wellington Stakes, the Gr.2 Queensland Guineas, the Gr.1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and the Gr.1
William Reid Stakes. Displaying his versatility by winning from 1200m to 1600m,Turffontein is by Hennessy’s four times Gr.1 winning son Johannesburg – successful sire of 33 stakes winners, his most recent success the runaway AJC Oaks winner Once Were Wild. Line-bred to Northern Dancer and the famed matriarch Somethingroyal, Turffontein hails from a prolific local family whose members include the
big race winners Alynda, Penny Gem, Brawny Spirit, Hit The Roof, Reward For Effort, Ivory’s Irish, Global News, Apercu and Jokers Wild. Three highly successful stallions – Sovereign Edition, Smokey Eyes and Princely Gift – are also members of this family.
