G1 placed stakeswinner from an international family of G1 winners ANNENKOV (Ire) is a full brother to Danehill’s multiple G1 winners AQUARELLISTE ( 3 x G1 wins, 2d Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, Hong Kong Vase-G1 ) and ARTISTE ROYAL ( 2 x G1 wins ). 74 stakes performers, 14 at G1 level, in 4 generations. The depth in ANNENKOV’s pedigree is evidenced by the extremely high number of black type performers, at G1 level in particular, in his first 4 generations. 5 wins and over $600,000 in France and Australia. ANNENKOV was a winner in France and a black typewinner in Australia. He ran 3rd in the Railway S-G1 and was G2 and G3 placed. In a dream start to his stud career,Written Tycoon has burst from the barriers with his first three runners all recording wins (and fast times!) in the initial round of official 2YO barrier trials. While three swallows don’t necessarily make a summer (or spring), it’s a fantastic launch pad for Written Tycoon … particularly when you consider that the three triallists are all in leading stables – Lee Freedman, David Payne and Paul Perry.

MUSTARD They reckon clothes maketh the man and in which case we’re not sure what to make of evergreen galloper Mustard. Shaggy coated and plain headed amidst a phalanx of sartorially resplendent equine Adonis’s, he stands out in a crowd … for all the wrong (and right) reasons. Then again, do any of us look our best at 50 (unless of course you’re a three quarter brother in blood to George Clooney)? OK, so Mustard isn’t the best of lookers, but then again, any horse takes on a shine when you’re holding the winning ticket. Victory rarely leaves a bad taste. And, 13 years young, Mustard is definitely our flavour of the month.
I
T’S FAIRLY SAFE TO SAY that if John McNair brings Mustard to race in Melbourne this spring, it will be minus the fanfare that is sure to be bestowed on his illustrious stablemate, Hay List. However, Mustard has achieved what Hay List is never likely to do – nor for that matter, hundreds of thousands of other racehorses. For, you see, Mustard became – in mid-August – the oldest galloper to win a race in Sydney in over 50 years. A truly remarkable feat that had the media scrum rushing for the record books. Turning 13 this season, Mustard has raced since he was a winter 2YO … way back in June 2000. To put it into perspective we thank Nathan Exelby from the Sunday Mail for pointing out that Redoute’s Choice (1996) – a year older than Mustard – is the GRANDSIRE of this >>

MUSTARD
As a passionate diarist of all things equine, Brian Russell has been putting pen to paper (and somewhat grudgingly) fingers to the keyboard for longer than most. Even with that in mind, we can say quite confidently that he wasn’t around to witness the deeds of Jorrocks whom, amazingly, even put Mustard to shame in the age-shallnot-weary-them stakes.
Winning many of Australia’s top races, Jorrocks was leading stakes winner in NSW on no less than eight occasions. Brian also feels there might have been a handful of bush horses who have won at an older age than Mustard since World War II, citing one Passion Moon who raced 232 times in North Queensland – winning 118 … 15 of them at 15.
Following Mustard’s victory at Rosehill, Brian was compelled to relate the story of Jorrocks – an Anglo-Arabian measuring less than 15 hands – who began racing at five after originally being used as a stock horse. Foaled in 1833, the ‘Iron Gelding’ won on debut – the first of over 60 victories – and, indeed, won 30 of 31 starts as a 13YO. He also won as an 18YO and raced once at 19!

year’s Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily. The scribe went on to point out that the oldest Melbourne Cup winners were relative spring chickens: the 8YOs Catalogue (1938) and Toryboy (1865). Mustard, naturally enough, generated media interest last December when – as a sprightly 12YO – he won over 1400m at Randwick, matching the deeds of Proud Mark who won a four horse Trophy at Sedan Dip (a quick 20 hour drive from Brisbane) in August. But now Mustard pretty much has it on his own (although as industry historian, Brian Russell, points out – see sidebar – he’s not the oldest horse to win in town).
JORROCKS
At the time of going to press, Mustard has raced on no less than 110 occasions for 17 wins, 12 seconds and 14 thirds. >>

breeze
Horse traders are a suspicious breed. Caveat emptor takes on a whole new connotation when it comes to improvisus equus (in short, there’s no guarantees with neddies). Unfortunately, ‘horses in training’,‘breeze up’ and ‘ready to run’ sales have often been deemed – in some buyers’ opinions – as less than reliable sources of future glory.

SHOCKING
SERIOUSLY GOOD
T
HE MOST OFT-QUOTED stigma is “if the vendor knows they can run alright, why sell them?”
gets underway is 2009 graduate Seriously Good, a Bel Esprit 3YO who topped last year’s sale at $360,000 (who, like Shocking, was sold by Washpool Lodge).
Fair point in theory, but it appears that – more and more – the ‘alright’ types are being offered at public auction.
Seriously Good is seriously good if his Caulfield win at the end of September is anything to go by and was being targeted at the Caulfield Guineas at the time of this baby being put to bed.
Take Street Cry colt from Maria Di Castiglia for instance. He was sold to Laurence Eales for $67,000 at the 2007 Magic Millions Horses in Training Sale – after breezing up in 11.27 seconds. A little under two years later, Shocking has earned Mr Eales over $4.1 million. More buyer aware than beware! The Magic Millions Horses in Training Sale – better known as (somewhat fittingly) the MM HIT – has grown in stature in recent years and graduates aside from Shocking include this year’s Todman Stakes-G2 winner Masquerader, top Winter Carnival miler Fifteen Carat, mutiple stakes winner Graceful Anna and Macau champ Viva Pronto – all with 2010 form. Another who may well have a Group One tucked under hit belt by the time the 2010 MM HIT
This year Magic Millions also conducted four sets of breeze ups: two sessions on the Gold Coast, one at Rockhampton and, catering for a growing number of southern entries, one at Seymour in Victoria. While a sizeable number broke the 11 second mark, it was the Hidden Dragon filly from Flirt Then Kiss that ran the fastest breeze up ever on the Gold Coast, stopping the watch at 10.11. Others to record sub 10.3 times were 2YOs by Testa Rossa, Exceed And Excel, Mossman and Written Tycoon. The ’10 HIT will also be featuring sons and daughters of Bel Esprit, Choisir, Commands, Danzero, Dehere, Domesday, Elusive Quality, Elvstroem, Encosta de
Lago, Exceed and Excel, Falvelon, Fastnet Rock, Flying Spur, Foreplay, Fusaichi Pegasus, General Nediym, Hussonet, Jet Spur, Lonhro, Lucky Owners, More Than Ready, O’Reilly, Posse, Reset, Rock of Gibraltar, Royal Academy, Sequalo, Show a Heart, Snitzel, Starcraft, Stratum, Stravinsky and Tale of the Cat. The youngsters catalogued include full or half relations to stakes performers Fiery Venture, The Secondmortgage, Flaming, Desuetude, Only Glory, Coincidental, She’s in Demand, Platinum Zana, Golden Ace, Wyndam Glory, Not Now Norman and Sister Havana, along with the progeny of stakes winning mares Ruffles, Miss Kariba, Barbut Delcia, Bumptious, Ebony Magic, Gathering Storm, Plaudits, Flickering Fire, Johanna’s Lady, Tycoon Tango, Josalie, Threadneedle, Kota and Whyte Haze. All up, 400 have been catalogued for the two day sale which is sure to again attract a sizeable domestic and international buying bench. The sale will be held from 27-28 October and it could be shocking if you miss it! www.tracktotrack.com

SPECIAL FEATURE RESEARCH ROUND UP Twin births account for 1-2% of the equine population, with abortions due to twins causing up to 30% of total abortions in mares. About 8% of pregnant mares abort (‘slip’) their foals during the 11 months of pregnancy from a variety of causes, with a high proportion being twins in mid to late pregnancy. Surveys reveal that 64% of twins are aborted or are ‘still born’ after 8 months of pregnancy, with only 14% of surviving foals reaching 2 weeks of age. The biggest loss due to twin pregnancy is the reduction of subsequent breeding, with only 11% of mares aborting late term twins producing viable foals when bred in the following year. Natural twin reduction does not occur before day 11, and if twins are detected by an ultrasound scan between 9-20 days of pregnancy, ‘pinching’ or manual crushing of the smaller embryo is effective, with up to 90% of remaining embryos surviving to continue the pregnancy. Natural reduction becomes less successful after day 40 of pregnancy. It is best to have a twin pregnancy detected before 21 days of pregnancy, with manual reduction between 16-40 days of pregnancy if abortion in later stages of gestation is to be avoided. One method is to reduce the energy intake in the mare carrying twins between 21 to 49 days of pregnancy by 30% (not starvation) over 2-4 week period, which can result in a natural 60% loss of the smaller embryo. Prepare a Mare for Foaling
A heavily pregnant 500kg mare carries up to 65-70kg of additional weight as she nears full term due to the combined weight of her unborn foal, membranes and fluids or ‘the waters’.This can make the mare uncomfortable during hoof trimming when standing on one hind limb. Plan to have the mare’s hooves trimmed about one month before her due foaling date, worm her out to help reduce environmental contamination with Small Strongyles during the last month before foaling and administer a tetanus booster (toxoid injection) to help ensure she has optimum immunity at foaling against tetanus. Plan a follow-up hoof trim about a month after foaling once the mare becomes less ‘foal proud’ and anxious when handled. It is also essential to remove Caslick’s seal on the vulva before foaling. Check any mares bred away from your property or stud and arrange for your vet to remove the Caslick’s seal at least 4-6 weeks before due foaling date, just in case the mare foals earlier than expected. If you don’t remove the Caslick it may result in severe damage to the vulva during foaling.

Early Signs of Joint Disease in Foals Monitor Foals Every 7-10 days Foals may be born with limb deviations or ‘bent’ legs due to an inherited risk, excess energy intake in the mare and poor mineral and tracemineral nutrition in late pregnancy or Uterine Distortion Syndrome (UDS) in an overweight mare (refer to Handy Hint 2). Calcium and tracemineral nutritional deficiencies may also delay normal bone and cartilage development in the unborn foal in late pregnancy. An excessive growth rate during the first 4-6 months as the foal grows quickly and virtually becomes ‘too heavy’ for its legs to support its weight, can compress joint cartilage before it fully matures by 5 months of age. It is important to regularly monitor a foal’s joints for signs of early joint disease, bone developmental problems and abnormalities in limb growth and acquired conformation problems, such as turned-out limbs or upright pasterns as a result of over-feeding or a poorly balanced or inadequate diet. A rapid growth rate can be fueled by high milk intake by a young foal (up to 20 litres a day can be produced by a 500kg mare) during the peak of lactation (4-10 weeks after foaling), resulting in the overloading of joints due to excessive body weight, with
restricted or uncontrolled excessive exercise. In more severe cases, devitalisation of joint cartilage and overloading of the subchondral bone (the layer of bone directly under the layer of joint cartilage) can occur due to excess body weight and the ‘shearing’ forces on the less resilient cartilage. This can result in cartilage death and lifting of the cartilage off the underlying subchondral base on the bone cap within a joint as it is loaded. When combined with subchondral bone collapse due to poor calcification, poor cartilage quality and reduced weight bearing capacity, as well as decreased blood supply as a result of excessive loading or trauma from exercise, the lifting of the devitalised cartilage and shearing off the underlying bone on the bone cap can result in Osteochondritis dessicans or OCD. Joint cartilage does not have a nerve or blood supply and relies on drawing in nutrients from the joint fluid as the cartilage compresses with loading and rebounds during each step or limb cycle. Young horses which are overweight also tend to not exercise adequately and ‘stand on’ and compress on their joint cartilage layers, which increases the risk of OCD.
Identify ‘Good Doers’ in a Foal Group Some foals are simply born to be ‘good doers’, often inheriting the ‘thrifty gene’ and thereby tending to eat more and put on condition easily, especially when nursing on a heavily producing mare or being supplemented with high energy “cow pastures” or hard feed co-shared with the mare, or a creep feed. If you notice that one or more young foals are beginning to rise up on their front pasterns, (often referred to as ‘upright’ pasterns) or the foal appears to ‘rock’ forward on its knees when standing, then the affected foal(s) should ideally be separated out of the group and the feeding and exercise managed to reduce the rate of growth and development. However, if you are feeding a commercial foal feed and you cut back on the amount to reduce the energy intake, ensure that you maintain an adequate intake of calcium and traceminerals, such as by adding a daily supplement to help make up the shortfalls in the reduced ration intake. This is important to help ensure cartilage and bone growth is maintained as the young horse reduces in condition to take the excess loading off its joints, or naturally exercises more and overloads its already devitalised cartilage and subchondral bone.

SPECIAL FEATURE DID YOU KNOW THAT... Orphaned foals which are fostered onto older, quiet, large breeds of mares, such as Draft mares and their Crossbreds, or Warmblood mares, are at a high risk of developing growth plate and joint surface abnormalities because they are able to consume large quantities of milk. These mares are also often less active and the rapidly growing nursing foals do not exercise enough to facilitate joint cartilage growth and development. In this case, either foster two foals onto the one high producing mare, or milk the mare out 3-4 times daily, especially where foals are showing early signs of joint disease and confine the foal to a yard to avoid joint overload and exercise trauma. FACTS AND STATS • About 60% of newly born foals have minor limb deviations. Over 50% of these could be corrected in the first week after birth if the foals are confined to prevent paddock exercise and the risk of overloading their soft, easily distorted joint cartilage and the soft bone growth plates and subchondral bone. • Foals are born with only 16% of the calcium content in their lower limb bones as compared to a mature adult bone, with 60% calcification occurring by weaning and 80% by 12 months of age. This requires that the diet must contain adequate calcium, initially from milk, but also from pasture and hard feed intake prior to and after weaning. • Cartilage in the joints starts to develop at 6 months of pregnancy. During the last 3 months before foaling, the limbs and joints undergo a rapid increase in size by 47% and a doubling of the foal’s body weight to birth. • Cartilage in joints and collagen in tendons continue to develop up until 5 month of age in a young foal. A diet low in trace-minerals, particularly an inadequate or imbalanced intake of copper, zinc, manganese and iron, or even a diet high in iodine, can delay cartilage maturation and optimum weight bearing function. If healthy, fully developed cartilage is not matured by 5 months of age, it is likely that the young horse will have lower strength and less resilient cartilage and tendons for the remainder of its life. • Early signs of joint abnormalities affect the growth plates on the ends of the long bones of the lower limb, with the development of ‘apple joints’ in the fetlock (physitis) at 6 months of age and ‘open knees’ in the knees (epiphysitis) by 10-12 months in rapidly growing, overweight young horses.

HANDY HINT 3 Avoid Galloping Young Foals to Holding Yards It is unwise to allow young foals with a mare group to gallop to a holding yard for routine worming or hoof trimming, over distances of more than 500700 metres. The sudden increase in cartilage and subchondral loading, especially in the heavier foals, can result in overloading of joint cartilage, as well as a risk of inhaling aerosol ‘rattles’ organisms in dust as foals gallop in behind mares up race-ways and in the holding yards during dry weather. Observe a young foal after it gallops with its mother and watch for attempts to lay down immediately after it has galloped. It is likely that joint cartilage or subchondral pain is present and joint damage has been caused by the high loading of fast, extended exercise on the immature cartilage and bones.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Early Signs of Joint Pain in Young Foals It is important to regularly observe young foals which are growing rapidly on high producing lactating mares for signs of developing joint disease, before the joints themselves become enlarged or the growth plate spreads (‘squashing’ due to excess weight bearing or exercise) or becomes reactive or inflamed, referred to asphysitis (fetlocks) or epiphysitis (knees, shoulder joints, hocks and stifle joints). You should observe all foals on a daily, or at least at 34 day intervals, for the early signs of developing joint disease, particularly ‘good doers’ which can become “too big, too early”. Signs include: • More time spent lying down, especially after paddock exercise, as compared to other foals - this is often the earliest sign of discomfort due to joint cartilage inflammation and subchondral bone overload, with development of OCD or a devitalised cartilage flap as it detaches from the underlying subchondral bone in the front fetlock joints in particular.
FEEDING DURING LATE PREGNANCY A balanced adequate ration Most mares in Australia are bred in the spring to midsummer period when mares cycle more frequently and fertility is at its optimum. This means that most mares, allowing for their 11 month period of pregnancy, are in the last trimester of pregnancy (last 3 months or 8-11 month of pregnancy) in the mid winter to mid spring season. Early foaling mares therefore pass through their last 3 month of pregnancy during the colder winter months, often with less available pasture and hence energy, protein and mineral intake, unless they are supplemented with hard feed, hay and calcium and phosphorus and a range of trace-minerals to make up shortfalls in their diet.
• Minor joint fluid swelling in the front fetlocks, combined with stiffness and difficulty in keeping up with the mare or other foals in the paddock. • Tendency to stand with the front limbs slightly bent forward at the knee (‘rocking at the knees’) when standing or just after exercise, with a straighter pastern and more upright conformation (often described as “contracted tendons”) in the front limbs, because of low grade joint pain resulting from a developing cartilage defect. There is a genetically influenced form of tendon contraction in Thoroughbred foals which is exhibited at birth, but may correct within the first 4 weeks of age. • Attempts to lie down instead of standing still after activity, with bending forward at the knees and difficulty in lying down comfortably. • Progressive development of upright conformation - straight pasterns, ‘up on the fetlocks’, as fetlock osteochondrosis and early OCD is frequently seen in young, rapidly growing foals up to 6 months of age.

Nutritional needs of late pregnancy Studies have shown that the unborn foal must be able to receive adequate energy, protein, bone minerals, trace-minerals and vitamins through the placenta to fuel its rapid growth of doubling its weight and a 47% gain in size during the last trimester of pregnancy. The young foal also needs to store reserves of calcium, copper, zinc, iron and vitamin A in its liver to supplement the relatively low level in mare’s milk during early lactation after foaling. Many grass based pastures are unable to provide adequate bone minerals and soil deficiencies of trace-minerals including copper, zinc, manganese, selenium and iodine are widespread in the major horse raising areas in Australia.

‘Wobbler’ Syndrome Careful observation of young foals during the first month of age can also help to determine foals which are at risk of developing ‘wobbler syndrome’. This syndrome is considered to be due to the abnormal formation of cartilage in the cervical 5-6 junction in the neck vertebrae. It is most common in rapidly growing foals or possibly those with a genetic risk of developing the syndrome. It is considered to be a skeletal developmental problem (SDP) and related to Developmental Orthopaedic Disease (DOD). The syndrome causes malformation of the cervical vertebral canal and cartilage discs at the cervical articulation, which can ‘pinch’ the spinal cord and result in nerve damage and partial paralysis and incoordination of hind limb movement. Although it is often not manifested until 9-12 months of age, with up to a 2% incidence in Thoroughbred foals, the early signs in susceptible young foals between 2-6 weeks of age include: • Inability to learn to trot - affected foals either walk, canter or pace. • Standing with the front legs wide apart to balance the hindquarters, instead of standing with one front leg forward when feeding. • Problems with coordination and balance when the body is pulled to one side by grasping the tail as a foal walks. • Lack of coordination when attempting to feed from a ground feed bin - bumping into the bin with the nose before feeding. If you observe any of these signs, it would be advisable to have the foal examined for neurological damage by your veterinarian. Early cases can be managed to improve nerve function to prevent further cartilage and bone malformation by supplementing with additional trace-minerals and restrict energy intake, but in most cases, the symptoms are progressive and the foal becomes severely incoordinated and incapacitated.

HANDY HINT 4 Avoid Excessive Liming of Pastures Many horse owners believe that applying powdered limestone (Ag-lime) to ‘lime’ pastures helps to destroy L3 stage infective Strongyle larvae. There is no scientific basis for this practice as L3 stage larvae have a thick protective sheath to shield them against dehydration and chemical reactions. Liming does help to neutralise “horse sick” pastures due to urine saturation. However, excessive liming to ‘sweeten’ the soil to make it more alkaline for growth of grass rather than weeds can significantly reduce the availability of many trace-elements including copper, zinc, molybdenum and manganese as the alkaline micro-environment created limits plant uptake. As these are trace-elements which are already widely deficient in Australian soils, supplements of these in prepared feeds or additives are required to make up shortfalls for mares in late pregnancy, lactating mares and young foals.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Cartilage and Subchondral Bone Weakness
HANDY HINT 5 Locate Pregnant Mares in a Well Drained Paddock
Joint cartilage does not have its own blood or nerve supply and relies on exercise to compress and rebound to draw in joint fluid to fuel its development and resilience.
Pregnant mares require exercise to maintain some degree of natural fitness. This can be facilitated by locating feeds and the water source at the opposite ends of the paddock to encourage them to walk for food and water.
If a young horse develops joint pain, it signifies that the cartilage is diseased or poorly developed, or a dying OCD cartilage flap has lifted off the highly sensitive subchondral bone at the end of the bone shaft before the growth plate and is carrying excess loading or is worn away by over-exercise.
It is important to provide heavily pregnant mares with a well drained area such as a small rise or mound, with trees or a windbreak sheltered from the prevailing wind. It is important for them to seek dry areas to keep them away from wet muddy conditions.
1. It is essential that the diet contains adequate bone minerals for bone development (calcium, phosphorus and magnesium), trace-minerals, especially copper, zinc and manganese, as well as selenium and iodine, which are widely deficient in Australian soils and pastures (refer to map of soil deficiencies in Australia Page 4), as well as vitamins A, D, E and K.
Excess moisture uptake in their hooves can result in softening of their hind hooves and lameness as they carry an additional 12-15% of body weight over their lower back and hind limbs.
2. Feeding a well formulated pellet or mixed ration during the last 3 months of pregnancy, during lactation and after weaning will help to avoid joint cartilage defects when combined with adequate, but not forced or excessive paddock exercise. If the full recommended amount of a prepared mare and weanling feed is not being fed due to good spring pastures and risk of over energy supply and body weight gain, then a daily supplement should be fed to make up shortfalls of these important nutrients. 3. Aim for medium growth rates in a young foal to roughly double its birth weight by one month of age, (to 100kg for a foal of 50kg birth weight), double it again by 4 months of age (to 200kg body weight) and double it again by 16-18 months of age (maximum 400kg). Monitor growing foals every 7-10 days and if early signs of joint pain are present, confine the young foal to a yard with the mare to prevent it exercising excessively and traumatising the devitalised joint cartilage. Check the mare’s ration to ensure that it provides adequate nutrients for bone and cartilage development.
HANDY HINT 6 Beware of Uterine Distortion Syndrome Studies have observed that overweight mares confined to hilly country have a higher incidence of foals being born with deviated and bent legs. It is thought that Uterine Distortion Syndrome (UDS) is caused by the abnormally high compression forces on the unborn foal in the womb during the last two months before foaling as fat mares graze on hilly country. It is recommended that these mares be moved to an undulating or a flat, but well drained, paddock to minimise this physical compaction and restriction on the rapidly growing unborn foal. Avoid allowing a mare to become too fat prior to foaling as it may increase the risk of limb deviations and complications during foaling, as well as reduce the volume and protein content of milk produced to feed her foal, resulting in a slower growth rate in her foal.

The
STORY of the
MELBOURNE
I
T’S FAIRLY SAFE TO ASSUME – circa 2010 – that a bit more time, effort and finesse is expended on Melbourne Cup ‘prep’ than it was in 1861.
Hey, full marks to Police Commissioner Frederick Standish and his Victoria Turf Club cronies for coming up with the idea of a handicap over two miles and then ponying up some cash and a hand beaten watch for first prize: however, you’d have to agree that the event has somewhat ‘evolved’.
CUP
But there’s more to the 2010 Melbourne Cup hooplah than mere moolah.
This typifies the Melbourne Cup – in a literary sense – more than any publication preceeding it.
This year, after all, is the 150th running of a contest that has seeped into our collective conscious as much as anything that characterises our culture. It marks us as Australians. Like us, the Melbourne Cup survived a shaky start, two world wars, depressions and recessions.
OK, wiser folk than I have told you never to judge a book by its cover, but this time you can. Despite living in an era which promises new reading experiences via iPads and the like, rest assured there will always be a place for books of this ilk.

No easy task to be sure, but the bricks are quickly falling into place and a clear cornerstone of that drive is the release of a magnificent commemorative tome: The Story of the Melbourne Cup, Australia’s Greatest Race.
A coffee table book is an apt description, albeit somehow understating its worth. Over 300 pages and liberally accompanied by photos, illustrations and cartoons, the publisher – The Slattery Media Group – has mustered an outstanding team of writers, headed by editor Stephen Howell (who also provides much of the ink for the rebadged Inside Racing). Others to chip in with chapters include Danny Power, Bruce Clark, Glenn Lester, Gerard Whateley, Neil Kearney and Adrian Dunn, plus the late and very great Bill Whittaker. Another is Andrew Lemon, whose own 3-volume collection – The

Cup, the inexact science of breeding Cup winners, trail blazing women, fashion hits and misses … Did you know for instance that only 33 favourites have won, or that all five Cup protests were dismissed, or that since the race was first switched to the first Tuesday in November in 1876, it’s been run four times on a Saturday? Perhaps the book’s most ambitious undertaking though is the ‘Greatest Race Never Run’ where VRC Handicapper, Greg Carpenter, has compiled a full field of 24 of the best horses to win the Melbourne Cup over the previous 149 years. Thought provoking? Definitely. Subjective? Absolutely. Debatable? Well, depends if you want to argue the toss with a bloke who has dedicated his career to leveling our sport’s playing field.
History of Australian Thoroughbred Racing – remains the definitive account of this country’s racing past. (We also dips our lids to the wonderful photography of ageless shutter bugs and the design of Art Director Sam Russell). There’s a foreword by Greg Miles – calling his 30th Cup in November – and an introduction by VRC Chairman Rod Fitzroy, who marvels at how a city of 300,000 in 1880 could attract 100,000 to Flemington on Cup day? Think about it though … back then there was no TV, no radio and definitely no streaming video: I’m inclined to believe that while headquarters will again be packed to the rafters throughout the spring carnival, the ‘viewing strike rate’ will be
much, much greater than one in three Melbournians! The Story of the Melbourne Cup, Australia’s Greatest Race is effectively divided into six sections: History and Culture; The Human Touch; The Champions; The Trophies; Against the Odds and; The Decades which basically encompasses ‘everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask’ about Australia’s greatest race. From Archer right through to Shocking. Naturally, Bart Cummings plays a prominent role, so too does Phar Lap, Carbine and Makybe Diva. But there’s also stuff you probably don’t know: controversial photo finishes, betting plunges, Macdougal’s
It appears to me that he’s been fairly even handed: for instance, I’ve been taking up space on this mortal coil for at least a third of the Cup runnings and have personally watched nine of Carpenter’s entries win the Cup – around a third of the lineup. And it’s fairly safe to assume that Greg won’t be getting any irate calls from the owners of Comedy King, who won the Cup in 1910. It certainly makes for an interesting read:The Greatest Race Never Run, in what is surely the greatest book about our greatest race. In a world that is fast losing its spontaneity and character to sanitised spin, Mick is a breath of fresh air: a living embodiment of racing folklore. Funny thing is, Mick can walk onto most racetracks barely unnoticed. Sure, he has a coterie of mates but racing patrons at large couldn’t pick him out of a lineup. But here’s a quick quiz for you: name the three living trainers which have saddled up more than one Melbourne Cup winner? Well, Bart Cummings of course. And then there’s Lee Freedman with Makybe Diva, Doriemus, Tawrrific and good old Subzero. As for the third ... aah ... gee, that’s a tough one. Hang on, what about that bloke who trained Rain Lover ...?

ICK ROBINS TURNED 80 THIS YEAR ... not that you’d pick it from his voice. Reckons he doesn’t feel a day over 60 and, truth be known, he sounds ‘younger’ than most 60 year olds.
Mick still gets out of the cot around 10 to five every morning (been doing that for a long time now) and hoses down a few horses at Tony Noonan’s Mornington stables. Gets the old blood flowing.
But hey, we’re all creatures of habit. Mick’s been around horses since he was knee high to a grasshopper ... not that he ever would have made point guard for the Australian basketball team. Mick was born and bred in Broken Hill in 1930 and began riding in shows when he was just a nipper. Yet, it hardly paid the bills and Mick was also an apprentice butcher - “got 25 shillings a week,” Mick recalls. “But then I started working in the mines and, with the lead bonus (enacted due to the shortage of materials post war) we were getting 200 pound a fortnight. “They had to change it though,” Mick adds with a chuckle. “All the doctors, lawyers and plumbers were quittin’ their jobs to work in the mines!” By the time he was 21, Mick had become a hobby trainer and was poking around with a few horses. “My wife’s people ran a pub in Broken Hill but then they moved to Adelaide and, sure enough, after six months she was missing her mum and wanted to move closer.
“I still don’t know how I ended up with Rain Lover. A lot of the top trainers were chasing him, but old Mr Reid let me keep him ... maybe, it’s because I was cheaper!” “Trouble was, the horses I had wouldn’t have won at Nar Nar Goon and I thought to myself what am I going to do in Adelaide? “Back in those days a lot of trainers did have foremen as such and I worked in the building trade in Adelaide for a while. “But then someone told me that (Adelaide trainer) Grahame
Heagney was looking for a foreman and so I started off with him.” It was certainly a game changer for young Mick. During his seven years as Heagney’s foreman, the stable notched up a Melbourne Cup win (Gatum Gatum in 1963) and basked in the incredible success of Tobin Bronze, who would win two Cox Plates, a Victoria Derby, a Caulfield Cup and Doncaster (the equivalent of 12 Group Ones in today’s language). “I broke in Tobin Bronze and there’s no doubt about it ... I owe an awful lot to that horse.” Tobin Bronze was sold to American interests and would go on to run third in the Washington International, but was having trouble settling in and the new owners asked Heagney to re-

“I was copping a bit of flak about my decision to start Rain Lover in the Mackinnon instead of the Hotham Handicap (SAAB Quality) on Derby Day, but he ended up winning the Mackinnon, the (Melbourne) Cup and the CB Fisher Plate the following Saturday.” Indeed, Rain Lover would crush his rivals in Australia’s greatest race, winning by a record eight lengths in the fastest time in the Cup’s history (3:19.1) - not broken until Kingston Rule’s victory in the 1990.

Amazingly, prior to 1968, Mick had never been to Flemington on Cup day and in a TV interview many years later, he revealed: “I was shaking when I got off the float - 85,000 people. I thought to myself, how can you win a race here? “But after he won I was having difficulty getting down to the mounting yard and began jumping seats. I got my toe caught in one of them and fell arse over head. Pretty excited though ... don’t think I would’ve cared if I’d broken me leg.” Rain Lover wouldn’t have it all his own way the following year though. Following the sensational scratching of hot favourite, Big Philou, just 39 minutes before the Cup (in a doping scandal which still reverberates 40 years later), Rain Lover - carrying 9 stone, 7 pounds (60.5kgs) still had to >> www.tracktotrack.com

INDUSTRY PROFILE
In a thrilling finish, Rain Lover prevailed by a neck and Mick Robins became the first person in 107 years to train successive Melbourne Cup winners (only four horses - Archer 1861 & 1862, Think Big 1974 & 1975 and Makybe Diva 2003, 2004 & 2005 - have won the big one in successive years). Inexplicably, new found notoriety didn’t result in a massive influx of horses to his stable and by the early 70s, things took a turn for the worse when his wife contracted cancer. “I had her in hospitals all over the place and the doctor suggested I take her to Perth where the warmer weather might help a bit. “I pretty much gave up on training while I was nursing her and just knocked around a bit.

COLE DIESEL
Throughout 1989, Cole Diesel would win five Group races including the Elders (now Toorak) Handicap and the Caulfield Cup. Mick recalls, with some amusement, the parity of winning Melbourne Cups and Caulfield Cups 20 years apart: “When I won the Melbourne Cup the race wasn’t worth anywhere near what it is today ... I got a ham sandwich and a cup of coffee from Mr Reid.
“Eventually I came back to Melbourne and ran into Greg Mance, who owned Windsor Smith shoes and had taken up his “But when we won the Caulfield trainers’ licence. Greg told me Cup, Greg handed me a cheque that he was opening a stable in for $30,000!” Queensland and would I like to look after his Melbourne (training) operation for him. “After Rain Lover won the Cup “Greg’s a great bloke and we had a lot of fun with his horses.” Quarter Master (bred by Mance) won the Australian Hurdle, but it was the flashy grey, Cole Diesel, who thrust Mick back into the limelight ... albeit in a supporting role.

I was having difficulty getting down to the mounting yard and began jumping seats. I got my toe caught in one of them and fell arse over head. Pretty excited though ... don’t think I would’ve cared if I’d broken me leg.”
Mick would eventually knock around in Singapore for a couple of years working for David Balfour (“I was going to take out a B Licence but they told me I was too old and too over qualified!”), but was at a loose end when returning to Australia. “Tony (Noonan) asked me one day what I was up to and I said I was thinking of heading back to Adelaide. “He asked me to come down to Mornington and keep him company for a month and I’ve been there ever since. That was in 1994. “Every year - around Christmas - I usually give some thought to retiring, but I like to keep my hand in and, who knows, we just might find another Cup winner!” In belated deference to his largely unsung achievements, the Victoria Racing Club asked Mick to accompany Jim Johnson (who rode both Rain Lover and Gatum Gatum) as quasi ambassadors for the club’s popular Melbourne Cup tour: a role he clearly relished. He even got to take the Cup to Broken Hill with John Marshall (who rode Rogan Josh to Melbourne Cup glory in 1999). “That was a real thrill - they really rolled out the red carpet for us at Broken Hill.” And some might say that’s only fitting for this quiet achiever who has woven so much into the tapestry that is Australian racing.

STALLION PROFILE
WRITTEN TYCOON Lee Freedman’s Masthead – hailing from the Redoute’s Choice mare Balsamico – was first cab off the rank, winning his Cranbourne assignment in the fastest 2YO trial of the day (48.84 seconds). Meanwhile, some 900kms away at Randwick, the David Payne trained Trump also set a blistering pace to win his trial and notch up the daily double. The spitting image of his flashy sire,Trump clearly has a promising future. Then, two days on, Some Boy proved he is just that by capturing his heat at Newcastle under the watchful eye of Group One trainer Paul Perry. It was also the same week that Magic Millions staged ‘breeze ups’ for the Horses in Training Sale at the Gold Coast on 27-28 October and, once again, Written Tycoon figured prominently with three of his first crop youngsters recording sub 11 second times. The ‘run’ comes as no surprise to Iskander Racing which placed the imposing chestnut with Victoria’s Eliza Park in 2007.
W
hile three swallows don’t necessarily make a summer (or spring), it’s a fantastic launch pad for Written Tycoon … particularly when you consider that the three triallists are all in leading stables.
A son of ill-fated Last Tycoon stallion, Iglesia, Written Tycoon is out of the Kenmare mare Party Miss (closely related to Group One winners Anthems and Yell) and was a very speedy juvenile in his own right. That certainly showed in the traditional Golden Slipper leadup – the Todman Stakes – where he finished a convincing winner over Domesday, Flying Pegasus, Jet Spur and company. Importantly, the Todman has also been taken out by influential
sires Charge Forward, Exceed and Excel, General Nediym, Marauding and Luskin Star to name but a few. Resuming at three Written Tycoon would run a brilliant second in the San Domenico Stakes, leaving in his wake the likes of Snitzel, Stratum, Mnemosyne and Bradbury’s Luck. Trainer John O’Shea would later declare Written Tycoon to have the “best turn of foot I’ve seen”. Upon completion of his racing career, Written Tycoon shuttled south of the border to Eliza Park and immediately set about covering a large book of mares (118), the results of which are now on show. Actually, the effect was fairly immediate with keen industry observers declaring the Written Tycoons to be some of the nicest foals they had seen, borne out by his success in the yearling sale ring earlier this year. At auctions on the Gold Coast, in New Zealand, Melbourne and Adelaide, the Written Tycoons sold for $85,000, $65,000, $56,000, $55,000, $54,000 etc. – not bad off an initial service fee of $8,250. And there’s plenty waiting in the wings: Written Tycoon covered 323 mares in his first three books and – not surprisingly – he will engage his largest harem to date in 2010. Written Tycoon stands this season at Eliza Park at a fee of $6,600 and for further information phone Iskander Racing on 131 340 or visit www.iskander.com www.tracktotrack.com

TRAINER PROFILE - DEAN SAXON
The thoroughbred is a fickle creature. Even the most naturally gifted of them can sometimes lose their way – their interest in racing seemingly gone and their desire to compete no longer apparent.
B
UT OFTEN IT IS still present and, with the skills of a talented horseman, a good horse can be rejuvenated. And there are not too many men better at the job than Mount Gambier trainer Dean Saxon. With a philosophy of getting his horses back to nature, Dean works his horses on ten acres purchased three and a half years ago – Stormy Park.
“My rejuvenation programme is built from the ground up,” he continued. “I train horses barefooted to get their feet back to life and functioning as nature intended them be.”
“My horses do the vast majority of their work being led, building up strength and true fitness with ‘commando style’ training utilising interval training routines – all in straight lines and using the gentle undulations of the countryside to build the fitness base.” “There is no trackwork for sour horses who have seen tracks every day of their lives.”
Previously training on course for 13 years, he has forged himself a reputation as not only a great bloke, but as an outstanding conditioner of horses.
Dean’s programme works – and With 1500 hectares of pine a perfect example of that is the forest only 3km from Stormy mighty Riceman. Park’s front gate, Saxon has unrestricted access to all the tracks I train horses barefooted and pathways.
Without access to the funds required to buy nicely bred and conformed yearlings, Dean has instead concentrated on tried horses – those who have shown talent but who for some reason are not racing to the best of their ability.
“The soil is natural and functioning as nature sand which is intended them be. perfect for low concussion base fitness work due to horses having to work a bit harder through the Entering Dean’s stables as a sandier surface,” he said. nine-year-old who had been

around the traps – kicking off his career in Tasmania before various stints in Melbourne – the son of Runyon has gone from strength to strength over the past six months. A winner over 1600m at Cranbourne in late May, Riceman was a close up and unlucky fifth to Leica Larrikin at Flemington a fortnight later. At the same track two weeks on the bold bay gelding won. And in stunning style. Missing the start by no less than four lengths, he struck interference at the 1200m before making a mid-race run wide around the field.
He’d endured a tough run but it didn’t matter and in the twinkling of an eye Riceman was able to put over three lengths on his rivals – recording the easiest and most impressive victory of his career. An extraordinary win under any circumstances but all the more so at Flemington on a Saturday, particularly so considering that the horse as a nine-yearold should have been well past his prime and especially as the horse had twice been retired having bled and torn a tendon! And the win was no one-off, Riceman subsequently a fast finishing third to rising star
Doubtful Jack in the Listed Winter Champion before a gallant second to another exciting up-and-comer Moudre. Turning ten on August 1, Riceman has continued to thrive under Dean’s care and, after an unlucky run in the Listed Balaklava Cup, he headed to Bendigo for a crack at the Golden Mile in mid-September. Settling last of 16, he travelled sweetly for Brad Rawiller, swinging widest at the turn and charging home – drawing clear to win by a soft 2.3 lengths. “He is just a marvel,” Dean enthused, totally in awe of his charge. “He is such a great >> www.tracktotrack.com

horse to train – he puts in every start and does so well in between races. A day off for him is the equivalent of three for any other horse.” Riceman is one of a large number of horses with whom Dean has enjoyed success at city level, other success stories including Stormy Jim, Go With The Flow, Backstop, Spirit Of Hope, Cazique and Van der Haar – all of whom he won Melbourne Saturday metropolitan races with. And then there are the Adelaide city winners Mini Jumbuk, Kingston Hero, Parting Company,
WALKING THE WALK 42
Tecracy and Epona Miss – as well as the country cups winner Our Guided Missile. Each of these horses, although already of city quality, were out of form prior to moving to the Saxon stables and he takes great pride in seeing horses race to their true ability. Well known racing personality Deane Lester has cheered home several winners with Saxon. “I have enjoyed great success with Dean since 1998, firstly with Go With The Flow who won eight races after losing all form for his previous trainer.”
“Another success was Backstop, whom Dean won two city races with after he had been thrown on the equine scrapheap. He is an old style horseman who uses a natural and common sense approach to training racehorses.” Ideally situated at Mount Gambier half way between Melbourne and Adelaide, Dean is always happy to talk to owners about their horses. His communication is first rate – and, as his popular annual party in South Melbourne shows, he loves having a great time – treating his owners more like friends than clients.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Road to recovery
A
S STRANGE AS IT sounds, there’s much more to training horses than training horses.
Long gone are the days when interaction with owners was monosyllabic and the very core of that ownership were a few people with a lot of horses. In 2010, communication is paramount and it’s not rare to find a horse with well over a 100 owners. So, between getting up sparrows for trackwork and dragging your sorry A Grass to bed late, late at night (after the mobile is surgically removed), there’s little time in your day to do much else.
at
You’re a bloody trainer after all – you like horses, you’re good at actually training them … you’re not the tax office! This is where Luke Jervis – if you’ll excuse the pun – sees himself and his crew as ‘kniGGhts’ in shining armour. Luke loves the thoroughbred industry, has faith in it, and is something of a visionary. Around three years ago, Luke was firmly ensconced as Sales & Marketing Manager for the progressive Mornington Racing
www.tracktotrack.com
“A lot of them were right,” Luke recalls. “It’s just that the trainer with the better horses ran his stable a lot more professionally and, hence, attracted more clients.”
In short, a catch-all for those fussy trainers who would just prefer to train horses.
Was it 30, 60 or 90 days ago that you chased that recalcitrant payer who has a leg in about six of your horses?
44
Still, going down to the track of a morning, Luke lost count of the battling trainers who would approach him with that old chestnut: “How come so-and-so gets so many horses to train? I’m a better horseman than he is”.
Consequently, Luke decided to take a punt and start up KniGGhts Thoroughbred Training and Management Services encompassing billing, owner liaison, debt recovery, syndication, website & marketing services, pre-race analysis and financial advice.
Sadly, that’s why a lot of trainers stumble. Apart from having no time to stop and smell the roses, other stuff starts to slip through the cracks.
And besides, was this what you signed on for?
Club: during a five year tenure his mob was twice crowned Country Racing Club of the year and they also got a gong for ‘Best Marketing Strategies’. Clearly an executive on the way up.
LUKE JERVIS
It certainly sounded like a good idea at the time, even if Luke kicked off without a single client.
BUSINESS PROFILE “You don’t have time to be on the phone every five minutes tracking down a slow payer and the idea is to maintain a harmonious relationship … especially if you’re hoping that owner is going to invest in that new yearling you purchased at the sales last week.
But, three years down the track, there are now over 70 trainers on the kniGGhts books and Luke has five staff to share the load. Although only 20 are full management clients, the sheer range of services provided by kniGGhts keeps the team busy. “While we offer a varied range of professional services, our two main areas at kniGGhts are invoicing – including all accounts payable and receivable – and debt recovery,” Luke points out. “Even the stables with their own invoicing in place often use us to recover overdue accounts. “The best thing is that our clients vary in size: we’ve got people like Mark Kavanagh with a large stable, right through to trainers with just a couple of horses. “It was a great thrill when our clients have success: big and small. Naturally we were very pleased for Mark when he won the Cup last year with Shocking, but it’s also a great buzz to see a guy like Mick Sell – in the industry for over 20 years before taking up his licence – win in the city with his first horse … a 10 year old no less (Stately Dash). Turns out it was the owner’s first city win in 40 years! “There’s a lot of them out there like Mick though: really good
trainers who just need the opportunity to do what they do best. “I tell trainers that you’ll get the vet in when your horse gets injured and you’ll engage a farrier to put on racing plates. Why? Because they are experts in their field. “So then, why wouldn’t you engage a professional in the accounts payable and receivable component of your business? Just makes good sense. “But it’s more than that too: a lot of trainers out there are capable of handling all aspects of the business, but why would they want to? You get up at 3.30 or 4 in the morning, head out to trackwork, maybe go to the trials or the races. In the meantime you’re constantly on the phone to owners, researching programs, studying form, etcetera, etcetera. “At the end of the day you’re knackered. And while a spreadsheet or ledger to you might not take on the proportions of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, does it really matter? Everyone needs a life. “We also ease the burden in terms of debt recovery and have been very effective acting as a buffer between trainer and owner.
“Our team is trained specifically in debt recovery and more so with the intricacies of racehorse ownership. “KniGGhts now represents trainers in every Australian state and territory. Although we’re Mornington based, technology allows us to provide clients with exactly the same services whether trainers reside in far north Queensland or have stables next door. “And even though it wasn’t my original intention, our business has also attracted studs, vets, farriers, agistment properties, syndicators … you name it. “One of the great attractions to clients is that while we provide a suite of services, some might use us for one or two facets of the business whereas others seek us out for a more comprehensive package. “I’m proud to say that we tailor just about most thoroughbred requirements. “Bottom line is, we are there to assist in whatever way we can to help a client grow his or her business.” Good kniGGht. HONG KONG SPECIAL
LIGHTS AND HIGH RISES.
R
IGHT IN THE thick of things on Hong Kong Island, Happy Valley is Hong Kong's oldest racetrack, the first meeting conducted there in 1846. Wherever there is British settlement there is horse racing! By 1884 the Hong Jockey Club was in action, running as an amateur organisation right up until 1971. Once professionalised, the Club moved quickly to upgrade the standard of racing - two years later off course betting was set up and night racing kicked off and in 1978 the world famous Sha Tin opened. Hong Kong racing was put onto the international map in 1988 with the inaugural running of the Hong Kong Invitational Cup. That day has evolved over the years - quickly growing in quality. Held on a Sunday in mid-December each year, it now consists of four rich contests - the International Sprint, Bowl, Cup and Vase. Horses from around the world jet in - making the experience of attending trackwork in the lead-up a memorable one. The public are encouraged to attend track work, a breakfast with the stars which attracts large crowds - more than would attend a mid-week city racing meeting here! The Hong Kong racing public are information hungry, the HKJC providing a great deal of information on their ever improving Internet site - the track work records of each horse maintained as well as form guides, vet reports, jockey and trainer statistics, etc. A leading contributor to local charities, the HKJC is the region's largest tax payer. The Hong Kong
people love to gamble - the off course totes are busy all week and every race meeting well attended. Australians love to visit too, some for long periods of time with many members of staff hailing from here - administrators, jockeys, trainers, trackriders and groundsmen. And of course the Australian horse has made a great impact on the Hong Kong racing scene. The best two sprinters to have raced there, for example, are Australian bred the champion Silent Witness and current star Sacred Kingdom, sons of El Moxie and Encosta de Lago. The latter is also sire of Ultra Fantasy who gave Hong Kong racing fans a reason to smile only recently, winning the prestigious Group 1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama.
They love it when one of their horses travels overseas to win - a large contingent of proud fans in attendance at Kranji when Green Birdie took out the Kris Flyer International Sprint in May. Australian horses have fared very well in the International series. In 1994 James Riley cheered home State Taj in the Hong Kong Cup whilst the NZ bred Vengeance Of Rain who raced here briefly as Subscribe for Lloyd Williams took out the big race in 2005. Rubiton's son Monopolize won the Hong Kong Mile in 1995 and 1996 and we tend to claim Sunline who emerged victorious from an epic duel with local star Fairy King Prawn in 2000. Six years later the Hong Kong trained but Australian bred The Duke, by Danehill, won the same race.
Meanwhile the Australian breed has dominated the International Sprint. First run in 1999 it has never been won by a horse bred anywhere else and often the quinella and trifecta goes to horses bred here. On two occasions the winner was also trained here - Falvelon recording a memorable double in 2000 and 2001. The only race on the International card we have not had influence over is the 2400m Vase, a race won in spectacular fashion last year by the French mare Daryakana. Whilst attracting a large crowd, the International day is a great one for visitors. There is never a feeling of over-crowding, the people are courteous and welcoming. It is a simple task to place a bet, easy to get to and from the course and the atmosphere is one that every keen racing fan must experience. And if you happen to be in town on a Wednesday, Happy Valley is another must see - the skyscrapers towering over the course, just about the only open space on Hong Kong Island. It is a small track, making the experience an intimate one as the roars of an enthusiastic crowd echo through the grandstands. So if you are after a holiday that combines great tourist attractions and Hong Kong has many of those (as well as addictive shopping!) and world class racing, be sure to put mid-December in your diary. FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
First Season Sires 2010
Part 6
Kristen Manning looks at the new boys in town. ALL AMERICAN
Brown, 2005 Red Ransom (USA) – Milva (USA) (Strawberry Road)
Standing: Arrowfield Stud, NSW Ph: (02) 6545 3999 2010 fee: $16,500 (incl gst) www.arrowfield.com.au
A $220,000 Magic Millions graduate, All American is a particularly handsome son of the high achieving Red Ransom, sire of 97 stakes winners including 13 Gr.1 winners. Now making a name for himself as a sire of sires, Red Ransom is well represented by sons at stud – Charge Forward, Domesday, Ekraar, Face Value and Handsome Ransom all faring nicely. Due to shuttle to the United States, All American was a quality racehorse who showed natural talent from the start. Racing six
times at two, he won his first two at Moonee Valley including the Listed St Albans Stakes enroute to a Blue Diamond second, a Gr.3 Skyline Stakes victory and a Golden Slipper fifth. Whilst not managing a win at three, he continued to race competitively in top company and at four he broke through for a strong win at Gr.1 level – racing away with the Emirates Stakes at Flemington and leaving in his wake the previous W.S Cox Plate winner So You Think. Retiring as the winner of four
races and over $1.2 million in stakes, All American is a half brother to the in-form dual Gr.2 winner More Strawberries out of an imported Strawberry Road mare whose dam is the French Gr.1 winner Tersa – also dam of the US dual Gr.1 winner Rock Hard Ten.
BEATUS
Brown, 2004 Rubiton – Infinite Charm (Tristino (NZ)) Standing: TBA
2010 fee: TBA
Fields Of Omagh wrote himself into the history books with his emotion driven last start win in the W.S Cox Plate as a nine-year-old. Taking out that coveted trophy on two occasions – also winning the Gr.1 Futurity Stakes, the popular campaigner now has a ¾ brother at stud. Twice a winner over 1103m in Victoria and 1600m in South Australia, Beatus was bred and raced by Fields Of Omagh’s proud breeder Martin O’Connor who has long been keen to see
a member of his family stand at stud. A son of the W.S Cox Plate winner Rubiton, an outstanding sire success represented by 40 stakes winners, Beatus is a half brother to the very tough two times Group winner Infinite Grace. His dam, the stakes placed Infinite Charm, is one of 11 winners produced by her wonderful dam Finneto. Fields Of Omagh was undoubtedly her star but she also had the smart stakes winners Malcolm (three Group victories),
King Brian (Gr.3 Bunbury Cup) and Timeless Grace. Further back this is a world famous family, Beatus a descendant of Gondolette – grandam of the famed matriarch Selene whose son Hyperion was an all time great sire. Local success stories Sir Tristram and Star Way are also descendants.

FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
First Season Sires 2010 Part 6 cont. CAPTAIN GERRARD
Bay, 2005 Oasis Dream (GB) – Delphinus (GB) (Soviet Star (USA)) Standing: Lindsay Park Stud, SA Ph: 0419 221 413 2010 fee: $8,800 (incl gst) www.lindsaypark.com.au
European Champion Sprinter Oasis Dream – a three times Gr.1 winning son of Green Desert – has been doing a terrific job at stud, represented by over 200 winners with 35 of his sons and daughters successful at stakes level. And this fellow, a high class and consistent performer who won six of his 27 starts, is his first son at stud in Australia. An imposing 15.3hh bay, Captain Gerard was twice a winner in
Gr.3 company over five furlongs (1000m) – taking out the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket and the Cornwallis Stakes at Ascot. Also winning two Listed races and finishing fourth in Scenic Blast’s Kings’ Stand Stakes, he is one of five winners from as many foals produced by the Soviet Star mare Delphinus. Also dam of the Hong Kong Gr.3 winner Saturn, she is a daughter
of the Listed winning Kris mare Scimitarra, half sister to the Champion Sprinter Double Form – successful sire of nine stakes winners. Ancestress of this prolific family is the famed matriarch Pretty Polly.
FLYING PEGASUS
(new to Australia, formerly stood in NZ)
Bay, 1993 In The Wings (GB) – Mill Princess (IRE) (Mill Reef (USA)) Standing: Avenue Thoroughbreds,VIC 2010 fee: $4,400 (incl gst)
New to Australia, this French yearling sale topper is by one of Sadler’s Wells’ finest sons In The Wings, triple Gr.1 winning successful sire of 63 stakes winners. Amongst that tally are ten Gr.1 winners including Soldier Hollow, Mamool, Central Park and the globe-trotting champ Singspiel who fared very well during his short time at stud in Australia. Previously at stud in New Zealand, Flying Pegasus has fared well from limited opportunities – from just 86 named foals represented by 59

www.tracktotrack.com
Ph: 0419 386 081
runners and 30 winners including the smart stakes placed gallopers Sumtime, Pinstripe and Salus. Bred on a 3 X 2 cross of the legendary Mill Reef, Flying Pegasus was placed at one of only two starts – injury enforcing an early retirement. Breeders will be well aware of the deeds of his outstanding half brother Last Tycoon – three times Gr.1 winning influential sire of 76 stakes winners, 18 of those at Gr.1 level.
A descendant of the wonderful matriarch Schiaparelli, Flying Pegasus is also a half brother to the three times Group winner Astronef, the French Gr.3 mare The Perfect Life (dam of the UK Gr.3 winner Rabah) and the Listed winners Side Of Paradise and Flower Drum.
FIRST SEASON SIRES 2010
SEA BATTLE
Bay, 2003 Quest For Fame (GB) – Peppie (Danehill (USA))
Standing: Cangon Stud Farm, NSW 2010 fee: $5,000 (incl gst)
Ph: (02) 4992 1231
A handsome son of the outstanding Rainbow Quest stallion Quest For Fame – Epsom Derby winning sire of 42 stakes winners, Sea Battle was a tough and classy racehorse. Eight times successful from 27 starts, amassing over $680,000 in stakes, he won at only his third outing at three in New South Wales – having been in the placings at debut as a two-yearold. Progressing through the classes, he really thrived in Melbourne – winning races at Sandown,
Caulfield and Flemington, his first stakes success being the Listed Winter Championship. It was in the spring of 2008 that he really hit top form though, after a close up fourth in the Gr.1 Toorak Handicap finishing all over the top of his rivals in the Gr.2 Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley on W.S Cox Plate day. And he went so close to Gr.1 victory with a second to All Silent in the Emirates Stakes at his penultimate start. A full brother to the stakes placed
Poulter, Sea Battle is out of the well related Danehill mare Peppie – daughter of the pacy stakes winner Pepite D’Or whose full brother was the particularly fast triple Gr.1 winner Gold Ace. Her half brother was a speedster too, the record breaking Gr.1 winner Final Card.
SHREWD RHYTHM
Bay, 2004 Danehill Dancer (IRE) – Balcanny (Canny Lad) Standing: Touchstone Farm, WA Ph: 0421 831 781 2010 fee: $7,150 (incl gst) www.touchstonefarm.com.au
One of the best of Victoria’s juveniles of 2007, Shrewd Rhythm – a $130,000 Melbourne Premier yearling – hit the track running, successful at his first two starts including a Gr.3 Blue Diamond Prelude. Finishing on gamely to run third in the Blue Diamond Stakes, he was also in the placings in the Inglis Premier. Still in good form at three, the bay won the Listed Vain Stakes third up.
Able to add another city win – a Moonee Valley success over 1000m – in June last year, Shrewd Rhythm retires as the winner of over $400,000 in stakes. One of his outstanding sire Danehill Dancer’s 118 stakes winners, he is out of the speedy stakes winning Canny Lad mare Balcanny – also dam of the dual Group winner Blur.
A descendant of the acclaimed matriarch Selene – also ancestress of the legendary stallion Sir Tristram – Shrewd Rhythm hails from the same branch of this prolific family as the champion sire Star Way.
