could also stage one of the greatest duels of the past decade when Hay List meets Black Caviar … supposedly in the Patinack Farm Classic on Emirates Stakes day. While the final day always appears to struggle: a hangover from the gloss and glam of Derby, Cup and Oaks programs, this time the Stakes program has the potential to eclipse them all. One of them (Hay List) has only been beaten twice in 14 outings and the other (Black Caviar) is seven for seven. Awesome. And then of course we have next year’s sales. Queensland’s Darling Downs has a proud tradition of producing outstanding gallopers with Hall of Famer, Bernborough, being a glaring example. Still, the ‘health’ of its racing community has rarely been stronger than in 2010 with at least a three pronged attack heading into the business end of the spring carnival. The Toowoomba trained trio of Captain Sonador (Group One Epsom Handicap winner), Poor Judge (third in the Group One Toorak Handicap) and the game Rothera (Group Three Betfair Stakes on Caulfield Cup day) are all flying the Queensland flag: but it’s the latter that may well provide the greatest fairytale. 10

HILE CAPTAIN Sonador (by Shamardal [2010 fee: $66,000]) and Poor Judge (by Royal Academy [157 stakes winners]) are both by highly successful sires, Rothera hails from slightly more humble stock.

His sire, Tobougg – while admittedly a dual Group One winner – didn’t exactly raise the bar in five Australian seasons with his 342 foals producing just two stakes winners: Kiwi Group One winner The Pooka and now Rothera.

As for Rothera’s mum, the Celestial Dancer mare Nova Serrure, she was a very handy sprinter in her day, capturing eight races and taking out the Gold Coast Silk Stocking-LR … the first black type in the family for over five generations. >>

Well, it seems good old Nova Serrure has turned a new leaf for the clan with Rothera being her third foal and second winner and, based on his performance in the Betfair, he’ll be soon adding to an already impressive tally of 10 wins from 23 outings. Bred and raced by S Goodair, who also paid the bills for Nova Serrure, Rothera is trained by 19 year old, Ben Currie, who has held a license for just on a year and is doing his level best to parallel his stable star’s meteoric rise. In his second year of journalism studies at the University of Southern Queensland, young Ben comes from a long line of trainers: his dad Mark trains, so does his granddad, Paul, as

Now with 12 in work, Ben took over Rothera’s reins in January and while the gelding was hardly a slouch with four wins to his credit prior to the switch, the now 5YO has really taken off with five wins (including the Members’ Handicap-LR at Eagle Farm), a second and a fourth (behind Metal Bender in the Hollindale Cup-G2 in May) from only seven starts. WE WALK THE WALK stalled those aspirations and they kept heading south across the Murray. The heavy rain leading up to the Caulfield Cup meet was music to Ben’s ears as Rothera clearly relishes the sting out of the ground and the young trainer’s confidence grew as the week progressed. Still, Rothera was facing some tough opposition in the shape of Gathering, Jungle Ruler and All Silent but a cool ride by Brent Stevens saw the mudlark pounce over the final stages to win by the barest of margins. Nash Rawiller (whose brother Brad would finish second in the Caulfield Cup on Harris Tweed later in the day) thought he’d got the ‘bob’ with Stradbroke Handicap-G1 winner Sniper’s Bullet and even Ben thought his charge had missed on the wire.

SHOCKING FACTS Can Shocking win the $6.175m 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup? Given that Shocking was equal favourite on the TAB Fixed Odds chart at the time of writing, it’s unlikely we’ll be Robinson Crusoe asking that question.

E CERTAINLY deser ves to b e i n content io n : Shocki ng’s ru n in the $2.6m BMW Caulfield Cup on such a heavy surface was nothing short of outstanding and his form this campaign would have encouraged connections (after winning the Makybe Diva-G2, he was held up for a run in both the Underwood and the Turnbull, finishing a lip second in the latter).

What’s more, he drops 2kgs from weight for age and will carry (depending on whether he starts on Derby Day) to 57kgs in the Melbourne Cup. But how does that ‘weigh’ up in the History Stakes? Well, 19 horses have won the Cup with greater weights (Carbine has the record with the equivalent of 65.5kgs in 1890), but of the two to score carrying 57kgs, the most recent was Gold And Black in 1977.

Despite the three peat of that freak of nature in Makybe Diva (2003-05), successive Cups are far from the norm and Shocking – if successful – would join just three other horses: Archer (1861/62), Rain Lover (1968/69) and Think Big (1974/75) to score two in a row (Peter Pan won the Cup in 1932 and 1934). One aspect not exactly working in his favour is the Makybe Diva Stakes-G2 (formerly Craiglee Stakes) victory in early September. While Shocking’s owner Mr Eales would have undoubtedly enjoyed the $240,000 in prizemoney, he wouldn’t be comforted to know that the last horse to win the Craiglee (OK, the Makybe Diva) and Melbourne Cup in the same year was Rain Lover (1969) and Light Fingers (1965) before him (however, 1979 Craiglee winner, Dulcify, was a moral to complete the double before tragically breaking down in the Cup, while Jeune won the Cup in 1994 and the Craiglee in ’95).

Shocking has plenty of other influences on his side though: firstly, he could tip the balance in the favour of 5YOs by the becoming the 44th horse of that age to win after he became the 43rd 4YO to win last year, compared to 23 3YOs (none since Skipton in 1941), 28 6YOs (the last being Delta Blues in 2006), 10 7YOs (hail Makybe) and 2 8YOs (Catalogue 1938); secondly, as an entire he is among the more dominant ‘gender’ with 64 entires grabbing victory, as opposed to 19 colts, 3 fillies, 50 geldings and 13 mares (actually, the mares – aside from Mistress Makybe – have put on a very good show in the last 20 or so years with Ethereal, Jezabeel, Let’s Elope and Empire Rose all flying the flag).

Fortunately we can still mention colour without worrying about being PC and here again Shocking leads the pack with 63 bays, well in front of the 5 bay/browns, 2 black/ browns, 36 browns, 34 chestnuts, 6 greys (of course you thought of Efficient just three years ago) and amazingly, just 3 blacks (the last being Clean Sweep in 1900).

And with the barrier draw still a week away, all we can say is that Shocking backers should hope he draws the 11 marble as seven

But while you have to mind your ‘P’s, forget about the ‘Q’s – and for that matter the ‘I’s, ‘U’s, ‘X’s and ‘Y’s – none of which have been successful since ‘A’rcher in 1861. By the by, favourites have a relatively poor record in the Cup with only 25 of them winning and a further 7 equal favourites saluting. (Interestingly, equal favourites on the Vic TAB Fixed Odds on Cox Plate eve were Shocking and So You Think).

Then again, last year Shocking flew the coop from 21 which, prior to three winners since 1995, had only once previously revealed a winner when Even Stevens grabbed the biscuits in 1962. So, there you have it. Has any of this helped? Probably not a jot. At the end of the day if Shocking wins the 2010 Melbourne Cup, it will probably be due to a very simple reason … he ran the fastest!

Clean, mean racing machines … Soap. Although everyone uses it – except, of course, that bloke sitting next to you on the train – it’s not usually something we give a lot of thought to. And we probably think about it even less when it comes to that horse in yonder paddock.

FTER ALL, IT’S been raining a lot lately and what better cleanser than a couple of God’s showers? Trouble is, while a decent downpour will remove a goodly portion of the grime (until they decide to take a good roll in the muddiest part of the yard), it won’t take away the itch and skin irritations that cause your neddy to gnaw away at the affected areas and, more often than not, rub his or her A Grass against the fence. However, Mans Best Friend (or should we say your horse’s best friend) is at hand …. Medicated Soap. First of all, it will give your horse a noticeably healthier, shinier coat and, let’s face it, we all look a lot better ourselves when we throw on a bag of fruit or a decent frock.

According to the House of de Carteret which dispenses Mans Best Friend, the soap is a gentle, natural formulation, cleansing and removing those dry, flaky patches from sensitive skin. And, before you ask, the soap is not be used on your kids – no matter how dirty they get. The soap is made by the traditional method, combining natural oils instead of using chemically derived fatty acids and, as a result, the natural glycerine is retained: giving your horse’s skin a moisturising effect. The blurb goes on to say that a mixture of lavender, eucalyptus, tea tree and essential oils are then incorporated which will not only have your horse smelling sweeter than the pot pourri in your bathroom, it will also repel biting insects … eg, flies, mozzies, ticks and the dreaded botfly. Mans Best Friend – unlike most other soaps – contains no

artificial brighteners, hardeners, lathering agents, phosphates, animal fats or tallow and is chemically free. What’s more, the pH is close to that of the skin to prevent allergic reactions. Bottom line, it will have your horse smelling clean and fresh, will repel those nasty insects and have him or her looking a million bucks. Hey, maybe you should give some to the bloke sitting next to you on the train after all!

Q&A BRENDAN Brendan Dreschler didn’t get where he is in life by imitating wallpaper at parties. Boasting a dynamic personality, Brendan is the long serving Chairman of the Bendigo Jockey Club, one of Australia’s most progressive race clubs in one of Victoria’s fastest growing regions. Track To Track spoke with Chairman Brendan on the eve of the 2010 Jayco Bendigo Cup.

OU JUGGLE YOUR responsibilities as Chairman of the Bendigo Jockey Club with ownership of the highly successful Brendan Drechsler Car Sales. Have you always been involved with ‘horse power’? Yes, I have had a love of cars and horses from a very young age. I was an apprentice motor mechanic and our family had a love of horses for a long period of time, racing many horses over the years. My wife Pam is a very successful harness racing trainer and driver.

How long have you been, firstly, a committee member of the Bendigo Jockey Club? 20

I was fortunate enough to be elected to the Committee of the BJC in 1994: an honour and a privilege.

Given the progressive nature of the club, how many hours a week would your role as Chairman entail? That’s easy – I start early and work late – I would say at least 15-20 hours per week.

What would you consider to be your greatest achievements since taking over as Chairman? The positioning of the Jayco Bendigo Cup from November to the Wednesday between Cox Plate and Derby Day, thus making

Bendigo Jockey Club stages 25 race meetings annually, culminating in the Jayco Bendigo Cup in late October. What is the Club’s annual turnover? Millions – I don’t worry about that! That’s why we employ a top CEO in Ian Hart. Actually, turnover is just on $4 million annually. This is, of course, separate to any wagering activity on club meetings. It is a small business that amasses significant impact for the local economy, both directly and indirectly. >>

Q&A Bendigo racecourse comes alive on Cup day and you were again packed to the rafters with marquees. Do you see room for improvement though? Absolutely! Everybody at the BJC is working as a united team to make sure that all patrons attending the Bendigo Cup have a great experience and also showcase our wonderful racecourse: which is arguably one of the best in provincial Australia. We always think we can improve. We have several exciting projects that will be completed in the next six months to enhance the customer experience at Bendigo. We believe the new Cup date still has plenty of upside in the next few years.

Bendigo Cup meeting aside, what’s your favourite ‘event’ for the year?

There have been some major technological advances in recent years. What is on the agenda for Bendigo Jockey Club over the next two years? The implementation of scanners will occur shortly for our main entrance gates. A range of important capital projects will improve the course facilities for patrons and for horse training. Industry standards for vision and interactivity continue to occur and our course will share in any new advancements and innovations made by the industry.

Bendigo racecourse is one of the most picturesque tracks in Australia. How many trainers and horses do you have on course? We have approximately 50 registered trainers and are working over 200 horses every morning. We are very fortunate in that we have Lloyd Williams, Leon Corstens and John Sadler bring their horses to do fast work at Bendigo.

We are fortunate the cold weather at the end of September early October has slowed them down, but we have purchased all the sprays and are ready to spray if and when they hatch and become a problem to the racecourse. Vigilance with patrols looking for signs of hatchings has occurred over the past few weeks and we hope farmers away from the racecourse are equally as vigilant. Naturally we are concerned about the potential migration of locusts from elsewhere to the racecourse if they reach adult stage.

What can ruling bodies or government do to maintain the viability of country race clubs? Quite simple really! Racing Victoria can give Bendigo the opportunity to run our Cup over 2400 metres, thus making it a qualifying condition for the Melbourne Cup. How good would it be? Showcasing Victoria’s two great Country Cups – the Geelong Cup one Wednesday, Bendigo Cup the next … both over 2400 metres. Also acknowledging that the costs of maintaining a large racing and training centre continue to escalate and thereby provide appropriate funding. That, coupled with a realistic set of race dates which allow the club sufficient event day opportunities to grow our own revenues.

Where do you envisage – or more specifically, where would you like to see Bendigo racing in 10 years time? I would hope that we are noted by our peers as the best provincial race club in Victoria and recognised as a leader in country racing in every aspect.

And, as an important and legitimate part of the spring racing carnival, our Cup should be an automatic qualifying race for the Melbourne Cup. This would be a great stimulus for regional tourism in Victoria and the Bendigo region.

This year’s Gold Coast Magic Millions took a minor bump, averaging $126,399 (down from $131,632 in 2009) and grossing $66,640,500 for 515 sold ($66,211,000 for 503 sold in 2009).

BUDDY ENGLAND Chances are that every singer with a decent set of pipes has belted out a cover of That’s Life. Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, Harry Connick Jnr, Michael Bolton, Dean Martin … crikey, it was even something of a signature tune for Shirley Bassey. Buddy England, of Seekers and Mixtures fame, has also given it a decent whirl over the years: “I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, A poet, a pawn and a king. I've been up and down and over and out And I know one thing: Each time I find myself, flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race. That’s life …” And this is Buddy England.

Forty seven kilometres and almost forty years. Back in the day, Buddy England, as a belated member of the hugely popular Seekers, played in front of massive crowds at the Myer Music Bowl – up to 100,000 fans. And besides, as the other half of boutique thoroughbred property – Warranooke Farm (“the slog end of the partnership”) – Buddy still gives a command performance every night, mixing feeds for a band of hungry mares and, for what he hopes will be, a highly promising stallion. But let’s not jump too far ahead … Buddy England was born in England (at Woking, south west of London) just after World War II, growing up in a musical family. “My sister was 11 years older and she was a good singer, and my brother – 10 years older – played guitar. Mum was pretty good on the piano, while my dad played accordion and harmonica,” Buddy recalls. “We didn’t have TV back then!” A dab hand on the drums, Buddy formed the Kay Brothers with his older sibling and they travelled to Australia appearing regularly on early Aussie TV icons such Sunny Side Up and IMT (In Melbourne Tonight). “The Kay Brothers were Melbourne’s answer to Sydney’s Allen Brothers,” Buddy points out. “Only, back then, I was lighter on my feet – both literally and metaphorically.” After a while Buddy’s brother – a qualified engineer – got married and scored a teaching gig, leaving Buddy to fly solo. Buddy would go on to appear in just about every variety program on Australian TV – The Go!! Show; Upbeat; Sunny Side Up; Ten On The Town; Johnny O’Keefe Show, Sing, Sing, Sing

and IMT, the Mike Walsh Show, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Good Morning Australia – along with a few ‘specials’ such as the Sammy Davis Junior Show. He even landed a couple of ‘acting’ roles on cop shows such as Homicide and The Detectives. Consequently, his regular appearances in front of the camera led to a recording contract with Festival Records with his first single – I’ve Come of Age – receiving very little airplay: “ballads didn’t get a hearing back then”. Buddy soon signed with EMI and immediately had success with If I Never Get To Love You (“written by the great Burt Bacharach”) and was

followed up by Doll’s House and Question before the career defining Movin’ Man which also charted in the USA and Cashbox Top 40. Buddy was then asked to return to England and sign with then Beatles publicist, Brian Somerville who, following the death of (Beatles manager) Brian Epstein, had a stable full of stars: Manfred Mann, The Walker Brothers, Peter & Gordon, Cilla Black, Crispian St. Peters, touring Europe with many of them. Buddy, he recalls proudly, also represented Australia at song festivals in Malta, Spain, Holland … even Sopot in Poland.

However, Buddy’s lingering legacy would undoubtedly be as a songwriter and producer.

“

Not only did he write many of his own releases, he also penned and produced chart successes for other artists such as The Strangers, The Vibrants, Everytime You Touch Me and Enigma for Tony Pantano (which also hit # 1 in Europe) and The Pattersons. Buddy also launched his own record company – Air – which, despite its early demise, found a niche in troubled waters. It was during this time that Buddy scored a huge hit for himself, Neanderthal Man, released under the name of The Love Story: “I had been around for a while and the radio station program managers decided not to regularly play my singles, so I thought I would let them know in a sneaky sort of way that I was still around and worthwhile… the rest is history.” (In May 1970 a group of record companies imposed a ban on the supply of free records to commercial radio stations

charting singles, including three in the top 40. Another landmark was writing, scoring and producing the Australian single of the year Thank God You’re Here With Me and album of the year Early One Morning, for Benjamin Hugg.

Sadly, Air folded just as the future was looking very bright: “An accountant ran off with the loot and all the paperwork during a long weekend. The powers that be caught up with him some time later, but by that time it was all over bar the paying back of debts ... quite an enlightening experience really!” Subsequently, Buddy would join two of Australia’s greatest bands – one prior to fame and fortune and the other post pinnacle. When The Mixtures’ Idris Jones had an enforced stint on the sidelines due to a nasty illness, Buddy filled in for a couple of years, during which they has hits Here Comes Love Again and Ten Thousand Children. Not long after Idris rejoined the band, they had huge hits with The Pushbike Song and In The Summertime, both heading to the top of the charts in England and Australia. Buddy had close ties with The Seekers too and when the band reformed in >> www.tracktotrack.com

the mid 70s, he was asked to work on the musical and vocal arrangements, as well as the production of their new album, which was being recorded in England. The album went gold soon after its release and, a year later when Bruce Woodley left the band, the remaining members asked their old Buddy to jump on board. Even without the memorable vocals of Judith Durham and Woodley, The Seekers were still playing to packed houses and producing hit singles. Buddy would stay on for around seven years before the band eventually split. But if there’s ever proof that nostalgia is alive and well and that all old rock stars don’t fade into a drug addled sunset, Buddy is still riding the trail. A few years ago, The Seekers Athol Guy (musician-comepollie-come-musician) formed ‘Athol Guy and Friends’ and, consequently, Buddy was

straight back into the saddle.

“

We have around 60 odd kids here of a weekend learning how to ride.

“We toured Queensland earlier this year – from Cairns through to Brisbane – and I was pleasantly surprised to see that we filled the venues wherever we played,” Buddy muses. “Now, apart from regular shows at pubs, clubs and the odd corporate gig, our agent has booked us to tour four states in 2011, performing 16 to 20 gigs in each state!” Now, much of his time is devoted to a mute audience at Waranooke, assisting partner Catherine Shelley with general farm duties … and loving it! “Catherine is an accomplished horse person and also runs the Melton Equestrian Academy out of the farm,” Buddy points out. “We have around 60 odd kids here of a weekend learning how to ride correctly as well as general horse management. “Catherine’s

registered trainer and we’ve got six in work, including including youngsters by our stallion Luhaif.” Buddy’s eyes light up when he talks about Luhaif, an exceptionally well bred son of Octagonal who won in Sydney, breaking one track and one race record for John O’Shea before being snapped up for a bargain by Catherine with stud prospects in mind. Admittedly broodmare owners haven’t been knocking the door down to access this close relation of Snippets, but Buddy is confident that with Luhaif ’s oldest having just turned three, there’s a real chance his stallion can strike ‘gold’. Although mixing feeds in the middle of winter is a far cry from the lights of centre stage, Buddy England retains the same humour (slightly irreverent) and joie de vivre that are his hallmarks. In an interview with a magazine a few years back, Buddy revealed that he was still pottering around with his music and had a few irons in the fire, but if all else failed he would carry on breeding and racing thoroughbreds. “I can’t seem to get away from shonky industries! It’s probably fair to say that every one reading this magazine has had a wager at some stage.

HERE WILL BE a few of you that derive your living from gambling and a handful that confine their ‘speculations’ to the annual Melbourne Cup sweep.

Consequently, he has chronicled many of the sport’s major events – quite a few which make an appearance in his book – but also parts the curtains on some juicy tidbits that haven’t previously seen the light of day.

But the original statement still stands: you’ve all had a punt and, regardless of monetary value or frequency, you’d have a tale to tell of your own exploits or those of an associate. Patrick Bartley’s got a few – lots actually – and has compiled them for his colourful tome, On The Punt, which was released last week by Penguin Books.
