SOFTWARE
“At Cressfield we use the Horsepower Foal Growth Software as an essential part of our horse husbandry program, in particular when it comes to assessing the growth stages of our foals, weanlings and yearlings. We have a lot less developmental issues now we can constantly maintain our horse’s growth rate. It’s been a great addition to our existing strategies and practices, assisting us in ensuring we achieve the optimal development of our horses.” Wayne Bedggood Manager CRESSFIELD STUD For more details contact:-

For instance, our plan to pen a feature on the highly influential sire, Snippets, has – in part – chronicled the bloodstock firm which sold him in their first year of operation. Yes, Magic Millions has reached the quarter ton and, after watching Australia bat at the MCG on Boxing Day, the Gold Coast operation is faring decidedly better.

GOD'S OWN x INSTINCTIVE COLT
Iskander Racing was instrumental in placing Caulfield Guineas hero, GOD'S OWN in Victoria and since his arrival at Eliza Park (where he stands in conjunction with Yallambee Stud), God's Own has produced over 500 foals from his first four crops. One of his likely types is the colt from Naturalism mare, Instinctive (dam of SW Umaprince & half sister to Champion Skating) who will be offered up as Lot 7 at the 2011 Inglis Sydney Classic on 23 January.

Rocket Man effectively ended Australian-breds stranglehold on the race since 1999. And finally, when determining who should feature as our Industry Profile this issue, the evergreen Neville ‘Nifty’ Wilson made up our minds by riding a treble at Warrnambool on 13 December – at the ‘I’m-justgetting-into-the-swing-of-it’ age of 64. The world turned a year older on Saturday too and with it comes the promise of many exciting events: if you’re selling on the Gold Coast, in Sydney or over the pond in New Zealand throughout the month of January, we hope you get everything you’ve dreamed for and, for those buyers who keep turning up year after year, let’s hope that yearling which catches your eye is every bit as good as he or she looks. Magic Millions Bloodstock hits the quarter century when its Gold Coast showpiece convenes on 12 January and what better way to celebrate the anniversary than acknowledging the deeds of the company’s very first headliner, Snippets.
A
LTHOUGH HE’S getting on in years, Brian Russell is a veritable vault of thoroughbred statistics and will happily regale all and sundry with tales that have weaved the very fabric of our industry. One of his – shall we say ‘snippets’ – is at the expense of his close mate, the late, great Bob Logan and of his one-time mare, Easy Date.
Despite subsequently attaining much success in the breeding barn, Lunchtime was (seemingly) no world-beater at the time and, consequently, the two Bobs heeded the advice – bad advice as it turns out – to rid themselves of the mare and her unborn foal. Putting Easy Date through the Scone sales where she was knocked down to Newcastle
Victorian breeders John and Jane Augustine, who eventually foaled down the mare. Determining to put their forward Lunchtime colt through the inaugural Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale, the youngster made $22,000 which, although it was not entirely unexpected, was not a sum that anyone could afford to retire on.
That would change soon enough though as the colt – named HARDLY SURPRISING THEN, GIVEN THEIR Snippets – vaulted In the spring of the fledgling sale PRECOCITY, THAT MANY OF SNIPPETS’ 1983, Logan and toward its current Canadian-born SUCCESSFUL SONS AND DAUGHTERS WERE status … and entrepreneur despite some rocky SOLD THROUGH THE MAGIC MILLIONS Bob Lapointe (he roads travelled of McDonalds hence, Magic fame), put their Millions is now modestly performed mare, firmly ensconced as the ‘other Easy Date to Widden-based motor dealer, Barry Gamer, for half ’ of Australian auctioneering. $5,000, she was then sold on to stallion Lunchtime. 10

NIPPETS’ DAM EASY DATE MIGHT HAVE covered more ground that Burke and Wills early in the piece, but has subsequently proven to be one of the most influential mares of the past 20Don’t years Worry About The Fine Print That’s because at E-Quine Insurance we do it for you. As a specialist insurance broker we know that price is irrelevant unless you have the right cover for your needs.
Although her first two foals – Easy Rolling (by Rolle) and Miss Winsome (Duke Ellington) – were unraced and unsuccessful respectively, the third, Sprintcar (Raise a Crown), would go on to win 10 races from 75 outings.
We’ll get you the right cover at the right price, and because we’ve already done your homework for you, your time can be better spent finding another winner.

SNIPPETS
For Snippets would become the first million dollar earner for a company that now boasts 70 six-figure graduates. Racing on just 14 occasions, Snippets won – with considerable fanfare – the 2YO Magic Millions Classic on his way to victories in the The Galaxy-G1 and Oakleigh Plate-G1, along with scores in the Challenge Stakes-G2 and Brambles Classic-G3. He would be crowned both Champion 2YO and Champion 3YO. During the height of his racing career, Snippets was acquired for Mike Willessee’s Trans Media Park Stud at Cootamundra in NSW before eventually calling Arrowfield Stud home. Although his highest advertised service was $30,000 (covering 122 mares in 2001 – his last season at stud), Snippets’ record at stud was outstanding, producing 590 winners at a massive strike rate of 80% winners to runners, while his 57 stakes winners (7.7%) including 10 Group One winners: Hong Kong champ Mr Vitality, Spartacus, Casual Pass and Hasna to name but a few. It was hardly surprising then, given their precocity, that many of his successful sons and daughters were sold through the Magic Millions. Sadly, Snippets died in January 2002 and has only had the sole winner this season – the 8YO Columate – from his five runners, although it’s worth noting that his final crop did include the Group Two winner Freestyle. However, if anything, Snippets remains as influential as ever … nearly nine years after his passing. >>
Then came Snippets, a non-winner in Perfect Snip (Water Mill), the Group Two winner and multiple Group One runnerup Quick Score (Pag-Asa), the winner Hacienda (Bletchingly), the maiden Within Limits (Ahonoora), stakes winner Asawir (Last Tycoon), city winner and stakes placegetter Singles Bar (Rory’s Jester), another winner in Simooon (Palace Music), another maiden in Swigger (Palace Music), stakes winning 2YO True Blonde, six time winner Snip a Dane (Danehill), winner Date a Champion (Thunder Gulch), plus the Flemington winner Chatline (Royal Academy). All up, Easy Date would produce 11 winners from 15 to race, four of them stakes winners. What’s more, Asawir is the granddam of Group One winner Rewaaya, while True Blonde is both the dam of Flemington stakes winner Regrowth (in turn the dam of Group winning 2YO, Colour) and granddam of 2007 Golden Slipper winner Forensics. The one that we’re all watching though his Singles Bar’s sire son, Not a Single Doubt. Redoute’s Choice’s first ever stakes winner, Not a Single Doubt is carving out his own niche at stud with his stakes winners including Doubtful Jack and Squamosa and is now firmly embedded in Australia’s top 20 with only three crops of racing age.
NOT A SINGLE DOUBT

URANGGA FARM’S CHAMPION 2YO, Zizou, is an intriguing stallion with ‘watch me’ written all over his yearlings
Want to know more? Simply go to our website at: www.e-quine.com.au or call Wayne Aldridge on +61 2 9988 4546 or 0412 333 808 email: wayne@e-quine.com.au
Winner of the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes-LR on debut, Zizou would later run a brilliant second behind Sleek Chassis in the Blue Diamond, a neck second in the Todman and was beaten a head by Forensics in the Golden Slipper. Let’s put it this way … a win in any of the three and the flashy son of Fusaichi Pegasus is not standing for just $11,000! Zizou is out of a multiple stakes placed half sister to Not a Single Doubt and will have 13 of his first crop on offer on the Gold Coast, 10 of them courtesy of Turangga. (There are also 14 Zizous entered for the Sydney Classic, 11 on consignment from Turangga). Interestingly, Turangga has sent a number of mares with Snippets close up in their pedigrees to Zizou, including Snippets mare Snippety Lass, a multiple winning half sister to Sydney 2YO and multiple stakes placed La Snippette. In Sydney, four of Turangga’s Zizous have Snippets in the bottom half of their pedigrees. Fantastic if it works!
What’s more, his influence is likely to stretch for many more years to come. For starters, his Australian Guineas winner, Pins, is a Champion Sire in New Zealand (whose stakes winners include Cox Plate winner El Segundo and Caulfield Guineas winner and Woodside Park-based sire, Econsul), while Snippetson is a promising type whose progeny include this season’s stakes winning 2YO Miss Upstart. Ominously though it’s the sons of his daughters that poised to make the most impact. Snitzel, who like his maternal grandsire stands at Arrowfield, is by Redoute’s Choice from Snippets’ Lass and, just like granddad, won an Oakleigh Plate. Snitzel is currently leading Second Season Sire and one of the most eagerly sought out stallions in the nation. Snippets’ daughters have also produced Magnus (whose first yearlings sell at the majors in 2011) and 2010 Newmarket Handicap winner Wanted, who retired to stud in a blaze of publicity earlier this year. Other stallions out of Snippets’ mares include Wilander, Husson Lightning and Exceedingly Good. Let’s put it this way … this won’t be the last snippet you’ll be reading about Snippets.
PS. Stuart Ramsey and his Turangga team should be in for a big week on the Gold Coast as, not only are they ‘launching’ Zizou, they will also be cheering on Karuta Queen (by Not a Single Doubt) in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. A $30,000 purchase from Turangga’s 2010 Gold Coast draft, Karuta Queen is now favourite for the $2 million event following three wins from three outings, including a commanding victory in the $150,000 MM race at Wyong in early December. 12

2YO PREVIEW
EARLY METONYMY
Track To Track’s roving r eporter, STEVE MORAN filed this piece on some of Australasia’s most precocious juveniles while attending the International race day in Hong Kong. Steve is currently losing himself in the Indonesian jungle.
I
T’S AROUND THIS time of the year that Hong Kong provides something of a showcase for horses bred in our part of the world (the region once quaintly described as Australasia, but now simply and better tagged as Australia and New Zealand). In the past few years, we’ve had no fewer than six Hong Kong international performers emerge from our two earliest major sales – the Magic Millions and NZ Nationals. They are Able One, Beauty Flash, Green Birdie, Egyptian Ra, Super Satin and Joyful Winner - all graduates of either the Gold Coast or Auckland. So, I thought it timely to look at what’s emerged at this relatively early stage - from the 2010 Magic Millions and Karaka Sales, against the backdrop of Hong Kong and with the new year auctions just around the corner. From Magic Millions we’ve already seen the following. It might be location, location, location in real estate but in racing it’s speed, speed and speed, whether you want a sprinter OR a stayer. After all, I’ve never seen a really slow horse win a major staying race!

SYDNEY CLASSIC Bel Esprit springs to mind. It’s a few years back now, but he only fetched $9,000 in the ring, yet two Group Ones and a couple of million down the track places him near the top of the Classic totem pole.
Now Iskander Racing (which has also brokered stallion deals with Written Tycoon, Primus, Court Command, Wanted and Ferocity to name a few), is returning to the scene of the crime, so to speak.
stride as a sire and that the colt is a half brother to a stakes winner from an outstanding black type family, Iskander Racing is probably expecting that buyers will have to pay a bit more than they did for Whobegotyou or Bel Esprit for the honour of taking him home.

FIRST CROP SIRES
DON’T SPEAK
too SOON There’s an old saying that “comparisons are odious” and, as such, it would be prudent to refrain from sizing up stallions from one generation to the next.
Y
ET, WHEN A CROP of first season sires produce a Golden Slipper winner (Stratum with Crystal Lily), Blue Diamond winner (Starcraft with Silent Witness) AND The TJ Smith Classic winner (Domesday with Pressday), you have the tendency to yell ‘bumper’. Throw Snitzel, Foreplay and Dubawi into the mix, plus the fact that each of the aforementioned continue to kick goals well into 2010/11, and you have a compelling case to suggest they are superior to the group that follows. After all, the leading First Season Sire as we go to press is the Oaklands Stud based Hennessy stallion, All Bar One, whose promising gelding won the Phelan Ready Stakes-LR in early December.
ALL BAR ONE
26
www.tracktotrack.com
That’s just one of the nine 2YO stakes races conducted thus far in Australia this season.
FIRST CROP SIRES
Meanwhile, in terms of winners Eureka Stud’s Red Dazzler has a couple, so does Chateau Istana (also standing at Oaklands) and so does Darley’s Blue Diamond winner Nadeem. Eliza Park’s Written Tycoon hasn’t produced a winner yet, but has a very likely type in Masthead and a host of trial winners, while Flying Pegasus (Touchstone Farm), Hotel Grand (Racetree), Saxon (Heytesbury), Outback Prince (Clear Mountain Fairview) and Perfectly Ready (Brighthill Farm in New Zealand) all fill out the top 10 with sole winners. Interestingly, for a table that was ‘dominated’ by Hunter Valley stallions last season, only one in the top 10 hails from NSW this time around, while five stand in the sunshine state. However, you have to admit they don’t match up with the previous bunch … or do they? By 13 December of last year (our cut off point), Snitzel had two individual winners of three races, Dubawi had a s t a k e s winner in New Zealand, Starcraft the winner of one, while Foreplay and Domesday had drawn a blank to that stage. Indeed, Stratum didn’t get his first winner – in Tasmania – until 21 December.
RED DAZZLER WRITTEN TYCOON
Not surprisingly, Stratum’s two most expensive yearlings to date were sold at Easter 2010: circa Crystal Lily’s Golden Slipper victory. It was much the same story for Snitzel and Starcraft who, despite the aura surrounding their first crop, sold higher priced lots in 2010.
Certainly the Queensland contingent should shine in their home state. All Bar One has seven entered for the Magic Millions, while ‘stablemate’ Chateau Istana has three on offer. Red Dazzler has seven, Outback Prince a pair, Hotel Grand and Written Tycoon one each, while Nadeem has nine.
Interestingly, for a table that was ‘dominated’ by Hunter Valley stallions last season, only one in the top 10 hails from NSW this time around, while five stand in the sunshine state
Stratum recently registered his fifth stakes winner and is now leading second crop sire by winners.
Therefore, it stands to reason that the first crop sires which are showing up on the charts now – despite their seemed lack of impact – will be under the buyers’ gaze from the Gold Coast onwards.
Meanwhile, at the Perth Yearling Sale, Flying Pegasus has a massive representation with 49 lots, while Saxon kicks in with 13.
Nadeem has three in the Sydney Classic, as does Written Tycoon, while across the pond, Perfectly Ready has a massive 61 entries for the New Zealand Nationals. Not surprisingly, vendors will be closely watching the results of juvenile events over the next month or so … and so will the buyers! www.tracktotrack.com

E LOVE B AGGING Jockeys. There’s something definitely un-Australian about convincing yourself that your horse just isn’t fast enough, or you simply plonked on the wrong neddy. No, it’s much easier to blame the hoop. But it might pay to remember next time you’re venting your spleen over the fence that a 500 kilo juggernaut, with a cruising speed of around 65 kms per hour, does NOT come with power steering. Furthermore, jockeys occasionally get it wrong when they have to make a split second decision and, who among us can cast the first stone when it comes to making a quick call? It’s an incredibly punishing schedule too: it makes for good copy when you write about a Melbourne Cup winning jockey pocketing $300,000 for three minutes work, but that is one of just over 1,000 registered jockeys throughout Australia. The vast majority have to drag their sorry behinds out of bed at 3am to ride work then will often have to jump in the car and drive for hours to a bush meeting for a handful of mounts. And they do this seven days a week. Not to mention the toll that ‘wasting’ takes on body and soul. Let’s just say there wasn’t too much lettuce on my plate when I sat down for Christmas lunch.
www.tracktotrack.com
And when they’re not riding they usually wile away all their spare time sitting in a sauna, walking around in plastic jackets, playing tennis, golf … Consequently, the burn out factor is huge: definitely a game for the young and restless. Which makes the story of Neville Wilson even more incredible. You see, ‘Nifty’ Nev is 64 years old – just one year away from official retirement age. He’s not the oldest licenced jockey in Australia – that title goes to Newcastle based 72 year old, Lyle Weaver – but Neville is the most senior riding still hopping aboard at TAB meetings. (Moree’s Danny Frahm rode until the age of 63 before retiring in September, while the comparatively ‘sprite’ Robert Thompson is still booting home plenty of winners at 53). But Neville stands

However, 48 years on, Neville Wilson – now a grandfather of four – has no immediate plans of retirement: “I’m going to have to retire sooner or later, just not right now. “At the start of every year, I say to myself this will be my last year – but, then again, I’ve been saying that for 20 years.” Neville had his first ride at Moe in 1962, finishing fourth on a horse called The Gippslander, before winning his first race on Touress later that same year. Although hardly a ‘banner’ rider over the years, Neville has still been legged up on some memorable horseflesh … Sydeston (winning a Liston), Zeditave (Blue Diamond Prelude) and Redelva to name but three. But the flashy chestnut, Redelva was clearly his favourite: “I won three Group One races (Lightning, William Reid and Futurity) on Redelva in the early 1990s – a great thrill.” More recently, his biggest success was aboard the Geoff Daffy trained Lancet in Warrnambool’s premier sprint – the 2008 Wangoom Handicap. “Geoff and I have been mates for a long time … we went to school together.” Neville has paid close attention to riding trends over the past six decades, both professionally and from an administrative standpoint.

They are not only consulted but are quick to initiate action if a problem is unearthed. Jockeys are mindful of their obligations to the connections of the horses they ride by seeking the best running, but also like to ensure that their ‘workplace’ is safe. One rider death is one too many and Australia has had enough funerals for hoops in the last 10 years to show that ‘duty of care’ has to be the mission of all participants. Under Neville Wilson the Victorian Jockeys Association has grabbed the mallet and hammered the jockey stakeholder role deep into racing’s heart.” Lowe adds that while Wilson was never going to get the chance to win the Scobie Breasley Medal (presented annually to the nation’s leading jockey), the OAM is a just and fitting reward. Meanwhile, VJA Chief Executive Des O’Keefe simply states he is “in awe” of Neville’s ability to stay on top all these years and believes it more than fitting that the Neville Wilson Award is accorded to the leading country jockey each year.
“
Following Nifty’s acknow-ledgement, industry scribe, Vin Lowe, wrote: “It wasn’t long ago that the master/ servant relationship between jockeys and trainers – and to a greater extent, owners – ruled the racecourse. Nowadays, the shoe is on the other hoof as jockeys are the revered face of thoroughbred racing.
Commenting on the changes since he first donned silks, Neville said recently: “When I started we used to race twice a week and on public holidays … now we race seven days a week: the only two days we don’t race are Good Friday and Christmas Day. “Most of the boys these days ride with their toes in the iron and they have great styles. The young kids of today are very good riders, they learn quicker than we did. “I still ride with my feet in the irons – I’m too old to change and, anyway, it hurts my calves if I put the toes in.” So, Neville … what’s your secret? “Simple, I love riding racehorses and that’s the important thing. “We sold the farm (a dairy farm at Weerite in Victoria’s Western Districts), which has taken a bit of pressure off and I can just concentrate on my riding now. “I’m riding trackwork every day at Camperdown and I’m getting to three or four race meetings a week. “I’ve been lucky. Although I have had falls and a few injuries, I’m pretty fit and blessed with good health. “I hear some of the young blokes who say they don’t like riding, but are doing it for the money. I find that hard to believe because I just enjoy what I do. “When the day comes that I’m not enjoying it (riding), that’s the day I’ll give up.” Will you still need me, when I’m 64? Damn right Neville. We’ll always need heroes!

ET MAN Singapore trainer, Patrick Shaw, clearly has the ‘right stuff’. Any bloke who can stand and smile just seconds after his star sprinter has been beaten a bee’s appendage – for the FOURTH time – in an international Group One has his share of gumption.
F
OR ROCKET MAN IS NO ordinary horse. He might be Australian-bred, but this bloke carries the weight of Singapore’s expectations every time he goes around and Shaw must feel like Atlas every time Rocket Man steps off the float. Shaw could have been forgiven for thinking his day in the global sun had arrived when Rocket Man drove to the lead a furlong from home in the HK$14 million Group One Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin on 14 December. Yes, Singapore’s pride and joy had company in the shape of South African visitor JJ The Jet Plane and hometown hero Sacred Kingdom (chasing his third win in the race), but the Rocket still looked as if he’d have their measure. One wonders whether it crossed Shaw’s mind that Aussie-breds had a perfect record in the Hong Kong Sprint (dating back to its 1999 inception) as Rocket Man and South Africa’s Jet went stride for stride. As one journo pointed out “Singapore held its breath” but JJ The Jet Plane got the bob and Shaw was left to tidy up, commenting: “He gave his absolute all … again. He was being tackled both on the inside and the outside and he fought tooth and nail, but he was beaten by a better horse on the day. >>

He was a winner until the line.” (Ironically, Rocket Man is owned by South African based businessman Fred Crabbia). Yet, despite the near thing, Shaw remains undaunted, vowing to fly Rocket Man to Dubai for a second tilt at the Group One Golden Shaheen over 1200m at Meydan on 26 March. It was at Meydan in 2010 that Rocket Man showed the world that Singapore has much more to offer than cheap shopping when he fought on gallantly, before again falling just short behind North American galloper Kinsale King. The glitz and glamour of bustling Hong Kong and Dubai’s desert air is a far cry from Rocket Man’s markedly quieter birthplace of Richmond in New South Wales.

Girl (Redoute’s Choice), were by highly accomplished sires, Rocket Man hails from Viscount’s third crop. An outstanding racehorse who won two Group Ones and ran a memorable third in the Cox Plate, Viscount was bred by the Inghams and stood at Woodlands Stud prior to shifting west to Oakland Park Stud. Although he is now the sire of seven stakes winners including this year’s South Australian Derby-G1 winner Kidnapped and 2009 Queen of the Turf-G1 victor Neroli, Viscount’s colt from Macrosa could only raise $60,000 when presented by Tyreel at the 2007 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast. It was a nice pick up for
Andy Williams’ Worldwide Bloodstock, all things considered. Aside from Rocket Man’s $2 million plus in earnings, Macrosa has also produced (subsequently to Rocket Man’s sale), the speedy Our Giant, a dual Group One winner in South Africa. A two-time stakes winner in her own right, Macrosa has now presented seven to the races for seven winners and is a half sister to AJC Derby and LKS Mackinnon Stakes winner Ebony Grosve. Exported to Singapore at the end of April in 2008, Rocket Man had his first start for Shaw in October of that year, winning his maiden comfortably. While that was impressive enough, he quickly moved into another stratosphere, peeling

off another six victories including the Magic Millions Orchid Trophy, Singapore 3YO Sprint, Kranji Sprint and, on 24 April 2009 – less than a year after departing Australian air space – the Group One Lion City Cup. Everything appeared in order for Rocket Man to capture worldwide attention in the KrisFlyer International Sprint-G1 (now part of the Global Sprint Challenge) at Kranji, but would taste defeat for the first time – by a neck no less – when collared by Sacred Kingdom. Left in their wake though was a horse you may have heard of … the jet setting Takeover Target, who had captured the KrisFlyer in 2008. Rocket Man was then off the scene for 10 months, but had lost none of his polish with a resounding win in the Kranji Stakes in February. >>

EASTER '11 STALLION PREVIEW
E L A S 1 No.
ON HIGH
Amidst considerable fanfare,Inglis released its 2011Australian Easter Yearling Sale preview at the end of November. Perhaps the timing is designed to remind everyone that despite Easter coming after the Gold Coast, New Zealand, Perth,Tasmania, Melbourne and Adelaide, it’s still the greatest show on turf … always has been and, very likely, always will be.
S
URE, SOME VENDORS leave Newmarket sadly disappointed after the three day extravaganza, but in the main – a ticket to Easter still takes you to breeding’s mecca.
As the next two pages reveal, Australasia’s elite stallions (and indeed some of the world’s best sires) are represented at Easter next year and buyers will flock accordingly. There has been some conjecture that stallion fees remain too high and ye olde rule of thumb (three times service fee to break even) means that quite a few stallions will have to lift their game in a relatively depressed market. However, you would think that the progeny of Redoute’s Choice, Encosta de Lago, Lonhro, Testa Rossa, Zabeel, Flying Spur, Danehill Dancer, General Nediym, Fastnet Rock and Choisir will make a tidy return for the faithful, but some will
have to make up a lot of ground. You know you are!
pencils – but overall their ‘eye’ is usually close to the mark.
Others who could easily eclipse their 2010 averages are second season sires Stratum and Snitzel who remain very much in the public focus, while first time sellers such as Bernardini, Casino Prince, Street Sense and – particularly – Dylan Thomas are likely to find a bunch of new fans.
Still, our prediction for best return on service fee (and we didn’t Nostradamus to help us out with this one) is High Chaparral (pictured below).
A notable omission from Easter ’11 is the veteran, Canny Lad, who still manages to punch it out well above his weight and you might have thought that at least one of Danewin’s 21 live foals might have snuck in. However, it should be remembered that the much maligned ‘inspectors’ – from ALL sales companies – do a pretty remarkable job and it’s in everyone’s best interests that they attract only the very best to their premier sales. Sometimes they get it wrong – that’s why they put erasers on the end of
There are eight of his youngsters in Easter – conceived off a service fee of NZ$17,500 – that will now ride on the back Group One winners such as So You Think, Shoot Out, Descarado and Monaco Consul. Still four months out from the sale, you can already take that one to the bank manager. >> www.tracktotrack.com

Everyone knows that racing is big in Australia: has been ever since the 73rd Regiment raced their neddies around Sydney’s Hyde Park in October 1810.
A
S TO THE thoroughbred industry’s overall contribution, well, that’s a moot point. A number of years back, a government body released a study stating that the business of racing was Australia’s third largest industry, but some claim it’s now slipped out of a place and is currently running fourth. Regardless of whether racing has got a podium finish or not, the December issue of the 2010 Australian Racing Fact Book provides some very sobering statistics. Not boring … sobering!
It reveals a lot about us as a race – or should we say, culturally. Yes, we should be looking over our shoulder as competition for the gambling dollar increases and yes, racing administrators are often guilty of shutting the
gate after the proverbial horse has bolted. However, claims that our industry is about to wither and die on the vine appear to be quite a ways off the mark when

Nolen, however, rode 133 winners for the season (Nash Rawiller 124 and his brother, Brad, 115), but the jockey with the most winners from August to July was the tragic Stathi Katsidis, who kicked home 172 winners.

Ominously, eight of the top 10 first season sires were descendants of Danehill! Not surprisingly, Danehill and his descendants will again dominant major auctions throughout 2011, just as they did in 2010. The Redoute’s Choice colt from Regrowth (sold at Easter for $1.8 million) was the most expensive of the 4,831 yearlings sold throughout Australia in 2010, grossing $256,088,752 between them at an average of $53,009 … and a sobering median of $21,000.

There are also sections on the Melbourne Cup, Golden Slipper, Course Records, Breeding, Classifications, International Racing, Directory and Industry
Redoute’s Choice progeny also topped the Gold Coast Magic Millions and Melbourne Premier, while his sons Stratum and Fastnet Rock made the biggest bucks at the Adelaide Magic Millions and Inglis Weanling Select respectively. Ultimately, 1,147 weanlings found new homes ($25,036,850 gross, $21,828 average), 2,206 broodmares were knocked

HONG KONG REVIEW
A FLASH O
Australia’s ‘run’ might have ended in the Hong Kong International Sprint, but as KRISTEN MANNING points out, Beauty Flash did a mighty job of carrying the Kiwi flag.

USTRALIA’S 11 year dominance of the Hong Kong International Sprint came to an end at Shatin on Sunday 12 December – for the first time in the history of this prestigious dash a horse bred elsewhere crossed the line in first place. Only one horse – Falvelon (2000 and 2001) trained in Australia has won the race, but horses bred here have not only won the race every other year, but on several other occasions have provided placegetters as well.

Twelve months after that it was a trifecta with Sacred Kingdom, Absolute Champion and Scintillation and, in 2009, another quinella with Sacred Kingdom and One World. This year we had to settle for second and third with Rocket Man and Sacred Kingdom, with the race won by the outstanding South African JJ The Jet Plane. Also running well in fifth placing was the Tony Noonan trained Ortensia who overcame a setback the previous week (getting loose after a stray cat ran in front of her) to run home boldly in the Sprint.
And so it was left to a New Zealand bred horse to win a feature, the handsome chestnut Beauty Flash taking out the Hong Kong Mile. In doing so, the talented son of Golan became the fifth Kiwi bred winner of that race – following
on from Lucky Owners, Sunline, Catalan Opening and Winning Partners. A NZ$65,000 Karaka graduate, Beauty Flash was bred by Windsor Park Stud and he kicked off his racing career in his country of birth – winning a 1400m >>
