Racing Victoria’s Chief Steward Terry Bailey (terry. bailey@racingvictoria.net. au) has moved quickly to set up a trust fund for the Perry family and all donations – big and small – will be gratefully received. It’s worth remembering though – as the floods coverage fades from our TV screens – that those affected will be picking up the pieces for many months to come (years in some cases) and while money will certainly be a wonderful help to those in need, simple measures such as the donation of feed for livestock will also be a great comfort. Many thanks too to the stud farms that contributed service fees to be auctioned at the Gold Coast Magic Millions to help out flood victims.

MAGIC MILLIONS PERTH PREVIEW

N EXPRESS With a market so largely reliant on the international buying bench, West Australian-based vendors must have breathed a collective sigh of relief on the first day of the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

R

UMOURS HAD abounded that due to the strength of the Australian dollar, overseas investors would shun our yearlings, but that viewpoint was dispelled in the first hour of Gold Coast trade (are we the only industry that does NOT enjoy parity with the greenback?). South East Asian buyers were particularly prominent and the trickle down effect should work very much in favour of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale which kicks off at Belmont Park Sales Complex on Wednesday 9 February. Staged over four days, there are 686 youngsters on offer with the sale concluding on Sunday 13 February.

Amidst it all, the Magic Millions race day at Ascot on the Saturday will feature the $250,000 Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic and $125,000 RM Williams Magic Millions Perth 3YO Trophy, the latter taken out last year by Paul Jordan’s classy mare For Your Eyes Only. While the Perth mob – rightly and proudly – focus much of their marketing on the likes of locally-bred heroes such as Scenic Blast, Miss Andretti and the soon-to-return Hay List, it’s

horses like For Your Eyes Only that probably put the sale in its best perspective. We’re hoping that connections will forgive us for pointing out that For Your Eyes Only is no world beater, but she is a very, very good horse having now won 10 of her 23 outings (with a further six placings) and nearly $620,000 in stakes. Since her victory in last year’s 3YO Trophy, For Your Eyes Only has won two stakes races and is thrice Group placed … all on >>

Standing at a fee of just $13,200, Danehill Express tasted stakes success at Caulfield and ran second in the Australian Guineas-G1 but, importantly, he was also a winner in Hong Kong. Hailing from the Champion 3YO Filly Savana City (which no doubt assisted Danehill Express’ yearling price tag of $1 million), the stallion is ideal for WA given that he’s a half brother to the brilliant Hong Kong performer Mr Vitality and to the dam of Danehill’s Hong Kong Centenary Sprint Cup-G1 winner King of Danes. Mungrup staff will probably be busier than one-armed bricklayers in Beirut given that Danehill Express’ stablemate, Oratorio, has the second highest

The principal of Darlingview Thoroughbreds at Mundijong (some 60kms south east of Perth), Graham will offer a lovely colt by his resident sire Patronize from the Real Jester mare Jestceny [Lot 3]. This is the second foal of Jestceny who showed plenty of toe at her only start as a 2YO, comfortably winning over 1000m at Ascot and defeating subsequent

Graham reckons you should also keep an eye out for Lot 482, another of the Patronizes out of the Marooned mare Nippon Pearl – a family littered with black type. Whenever he gets the time you can find Graham on the golf course, “away from the mobile”, but from the looks of his Patronize colt however, the phone will be ringing quite a bit!

olin and Olga McKenzie take great pride in the services they provide – the proverbial ‘one stop shop’ for breeders: agistment, foaling down, stallions, walk ons … you name it. Cromartry Park is also home to Lords A Leaping, Redoutable and the highly promising Natural Blitz who has burst from the gates with his first handful of runners this season. Indeed, he recently notched up a first and third in a 2YO race at Ascot and his four runners to date have run 1, 2, 3 & 4 (all at city meetings)! But Cromartry Park is also renowned throughout the west for its yearling preparation and it’s a reputation that will only

be enhanced at this year’s Perth Magic Millions. Cromartry Park will offer up six youngsters including a filly by resident Redoute’s Choice sire Redoutable [Lot 564], a filly by up and coming Danehill stallion Bearcat [Lot 606], the first foal of a half sister to Perth stakes

winners Cash in the Bank and Mystery to Me, plus a well bred filly by Balmont [168]. However, Olga is particularly excited about presenting three first crop youngsters the Group Two winning Hussonet stallion Sienne: “Lot 354 is a clone of his sire and has a temperament to match. “This colt is from Kenny’s Best Pal mare Culgoa, a half sister to stakes winner Delgara (9 wins) and dam of VRC St Leger-LR winner Inkster … Lot 551 is a smart type out of 12-time winner Sure Canny and Lot 538 is also well worth a look.” Well worth a look? Actually, an inspection of the Cromartry draft is a given at any sale.

B

uyers from north, south, east and west (well, not too many ‘west’ of Perth!) will be beating a well worn path to Barn D to view the Rosewood yearlings when they arrive at the Belmont complex in early February. Aside from ‘locals’ by Oratorio, Balestrini, Due Sasso and Flying Pegasus, Rosewood will present flashy black/grey filly by Artie Schiller from the winning Kiwi mare De Grey. This youngster certainly has appeal across the board with G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller really starting to hit his straps as a

sire with a dozen debut crop winners on both sides of the equator (Barry Baldwin’s 2YO filly Settheworldonfire is a prime example, winning by four lengths at Eagle Farm on debut). Meanwhile, Rosewood’s filly is a half sister to the WA Oaks-G3 winner Moodometer, winner of eight and close to $300,000 in stakes. Furthermore, De Grey’s dam is a half sister to dual Melbourne G2 winner Bold Mayo, in turn a daughter of Champion NZ mare, Mayo Gold (18 wins). Rosewood’s Brian Fuller points out that the filly

ARTIE SCHILLER

is fully x-rayed and, importantly, is Westspeed qualified. Certainly has plenty of appeal, but you’ll need to be patient as she enters the ring as Lot 640 … make sure you keep your powder dry!

amantha Mudgway and her husband Kim established their property – Mudgngurra – at Wongamine (around 100kms from Perth) in 2007 with the purchase of several broodmares. However, they certainly stepped it up a gear by acquiring the highly promising Zabeel stallion, Lords A Leaping in 2010, the multiple Group One placegetter whose oldest progeny are currently 2YOs. A bit like the Remington bloke who liked the shaver so much he bought the company? Samantha explains: “We sold our first Lords A

Leaping (a filly out of Aruna Stryker) in April last year, but couldn’t bear to part with a Lords A Leaping colt that’s subsequently been named Locavore and is in training with Brendan Fitzgerald at Ascot.” Mudgngurra will offer three

Lords A Leaping yearlings in Perth including [Lot 460] a colt “that reminds me a lot of Locavore … very similar in movement and conformation. Highly intelligent – which is seems to be a familiar trait with the Lords A Leaping”. And keep your eye out for [Lot 654], a Lords A Leaping filly with a double cross of Sir Tristram and closely related to Group One winner Te Akau Nick. “We are new to the breeding industry but believe we offer a top quality product that will stand up to the challenge of modern racing.”

solating a couple of highlights from the Heytesbury Stud draft in Perth is like asking a kid in the lolly shop to pick out “just one”! One of the West’s leading vendors, Heytesbury Stud will consign 38 youngsters to the state’s No. 1 sale and they include a half brother to G2 winner French Bid [Lot 80], a half sister to 3 stakes winners in Kasabian, Safety Outlet and Belarus [Lot 157], a half brother to 3-time stakes winner Mr Tanzania [Lot 214] and a half brother to South African stakes winner Silver Empire [Lot 248] … all from the briefest of glances and doesn’t even take into account the sons and daughters of boom first season

sire, Bernardini, Blackfriars, Bletchley Park, Due Sasso, Flying Pegasus, Good Journey, Oratorio, Viscount and Vital Equine. That said, amidst all the ‘glamour’ of his stud’s draft, Nigel Reid is very excited about the prospects of Heytesbury’s first season sires, Husson Lightning and Saxon. Hussonet’s Group winning 2YO, Husson Lightning, has 25 lots catalogued while, stablemate,

the Queensland Guineas winning Danehill stallion Saxon weighs in with 13 entries. “We’re very happy with how both the Husson Lightnings and Saxons have progressed and look forward to a memorable sale,” Nigel enthuses. And what will he do when all the dust has settled? “Have a couple of cold beers and spend some time with the wife and kids … not necessarily in that order!”

STARSPANGLEDBANNER 22

www.tracktotrack.com

2011 INGLIS MELBOURNE PREMIER PREVIEW

NT SOUTH! Let’s face it … the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale will never have the commercial appeal of Easter, nor the glitz and glam of the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Don’t think so? Try this on for size … •

Black Caviar [$210,000] – officially rated as the World’s best sprinter

Sacred Kingdom [$200,000] – 7 Group Ones and Hong Kong’s Champion sprinter

Starspangledbanner [$120,000] – two Group Ones in Australia, two in England

Ultra Fantasy [$30,000] – winner of Group One Nakayama Sprinters Stakes in Japan

Le Drakkar [$155,000] – Group One winner in South Africa

The Hornet [$13,000] – multiple Group winner in Singapore

At the very least, you can expect to see buyers – or at least their reps – from England, Japan, South Africa, Singapore and Hong Kong! Then of course you have Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler [$80,000], Rupert Clarke-G1 winner Turffontein [$70,000], Blue Diamond hero Reward For Effort [$190,000], Robert Sangster-G1 winner Rostova, 4-state stakes winner Ortensia [$50,000] … It’s an impressive tally and clearly the best selling point for any auction house. The sums add up too: Starspangledbanner won over $2 million on the track and now has a stud value in excess of $10 million, while Sacred Kingdom won his seventh Group One in January and has now banked some $5 million for owners. As for Black Caviar …? In its pre-sale promotion, Inglis has dubbed the Melbourne Premier “Faster Better Stronger” and boldly claims a shopping excursion to the southern state will “take the challenge out of buying a champion”. >>

Marketing hype to be sure, but the Inglis crew has done a laudable job – on paper at least – in compiling the 2011 catalogue as the company CEO, Mark Webster explains: “This year’s 725 lot catalogue has strengthened further from last year on both pedigree and conformation, ensuring the sale will continue to produce many more racetrack stars. “The catalogue includes 92 yearlings from stakes winning dams, up from 78 in 2010. These include Apercu, Catechuchu, Cheeky Choice, Danglissa, Desert Flight, France Soir, Li Lo Lill, Perfect Promise, and Segments. “There are also 83 yearlings in the catalogue which are siblings to stakes winners, up from 74 in 2010. These include Ambitious General, Art Success, Boundless, Be Positive, Chance Bye, Divine Madonna, Dysphonia, Elusive Touch, Fashions Afield, Hadabeclorka, Lashed, Ortensia, Pantani, Rhythm In Paris, Red Dazzler, Serious Speed, Tesbury Jack, St. Basil, Turffontein, and Zubbaya.

“One surely needs to look no further than the performances of Melbourne’s graduates and the strength of this year’s catalogue to suggest the upcoming 2011 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale looks to be the best yet.” Admittedly, it would be rare for any auction company spokesman to NOT suggest their sale was going to be the best ever, but

Melbourne clearly is growing in stature and it’s probably fair to suggest that interstate farms and not using it as a dumping ground to the extent that has been intimated previously. Whereas past years has seen progeny of the nation’s finest stallions make their way to Oaklands Junction, the numbers have almost been a ‘courtesy’. But appears to have changed in 2011 – somewhat dramatically in fact. For example, Encosta de Lago – who started his career at Blue Gum Farm in Victoria – only had six Premier yearlings catalogued in 2010 … this year there are 19. Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice had three last year … there’s seven this time around; Fastnet Rock 20 to 27; Testa Rossa 12 to 15; Holy Roman Emperor seven to 17; Red Ransom, none last year, eight this time around. coming to Melbourne from nine last year. Commands, arguably the hottest sire in Australia at the moment with eight stakes winners this season alone, has 10 at Easter, but he’s also got seven in Melbourne. It might well be the first season sires who steal the show however with Group One winning sprinter Magnus having the largest contingent of any stallion with 32 going to the show, while Bernardini (13), Dylan Thomas (20), Haradasun (18), Hard Spun (25) and Purrealist (15) – which all sold well on the Gold Coast – all having sizeable representation.

Melbourne Premier fares in 2011 given that the only sale conducted this year (at the time of going to press) was the Gold Coast Magic Millions which realised a marginal

gross and average (including the Premier which dropped from $84,949 to $55,370), the Premier returned to a much, much healthier average of $71,023 in 2010.

CONSIDERABLY HIGHER NUMBERS CATALOGUED WOULD MEAN THE TAIL NEEDS TO WAG, BUT IN LIGHT OF ‘PREMIER PERFORMANCES’ ON BOTH THE DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL STAGE, THERE’S BOUND TO BE PLENTY OF INTEREST IN THE CHOICE LOTS.

Not forgetting of course the ‘locals’ Any Given Saturday (11), Host (12), Soldier’s Tale (9) and Shinzig (9). It will be interesting to see how the

drop in average. However, following the wastelands of 2009 which saw every major sale in Australia take a tumble in

So, will the average increase this time around? Hard to say … considerably higher numbers catalogued would mean the tail needs to wag, but in light of ‘Premier performances’ on both the domestic and international stage, there’s bound to be plenty of interest in the choice lots. Either way, we don’t have to wait long to find out! The 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier will be staged at Oaklands Junction from 28 February to 3 March.

Who knows … they might be serving some more Caviar! Photography by Bruno Cannatelli

THE HORSEMAN

TOM BUST When Lissa Oliver visited Audra and Tom Busteed in Cork, Ireland, freak gales were ravaging the coastline. Tranquil was hardly the best word to use; yet down at the bottom of the steep four furlong woodchip gallop, set within a wooded glen, was a peaceful stream in which many a Cheltenham hero had paddled as it carried its first ever rider. Slow, calm, meandering; oblivious to the storm of the outside world. This is indeed the tranquil nursery of Tom Busteed, the master tutor of the horse.

T

HERE IS NOTHING rushed about Tom Busteed’s preparation of a horse.

“We do a lot of driving,” Tom explains, “groundwork is so important. It keeps horses balanced and they can tell you when they’re ready. We take our time. We like to have them for 12 weeks and those weeks are the most important of their career. We ride them like showjumpers, improving their head carriage, which helps to keep a horse well-balanced.

32

www.tracktotrack.com

“These are tried and trusted traditional methods. I was fortunate enough to work with very good horsemen such as Tommy Ryan, Eddy O’Grady’s head man, Tim Finn and Fergie Sutherland. Fergie is a great man, great patience with a horse, I rode many point-topoint winners for him.” Tom puts his experience and knowledge to good use: “We assess the horses and also advise the owner whether

they should go straight into training or have a break. It’s

TOM BUSTEED - TRIED AND TRUSTED

THE HORSEMAN

TEED usually better to give a horse a rest after breaking. The whole process is very stimulating for them and to then go straight into another new environment can be stressful. They mature so much quicker if they go away for a break between here and training. “I’ll ride eight or nine myself a day. It’s not like work, it’s a passion. And I feel very proud to have taken such a decent part in shaping these horses. Good horses are few and far between so it’s rewarding to see them and know that I helped in some way.

a horse around, to smooth out awkward traits. We start them over trotting poles. They haven’t a clue when they first start, then after four sessions they’re so clever. Loose schooling is vital, they learn how to correct themselves,

FLAT HORSES DON’T NEED HALF THE WORK AND ARE MUCH EASIER TO HANDLE. THE NATIONAL HUNT HORSES ARE STRONGLY BUILT, BULLISH AND VERY UNPREDICTABLE.

“We are so lucky,” agrees Tom’s wife, Audra, “we see them arrive as ragamuffins straight from the field and then they’re transformed into glossy muscular racehorses. “It’s very rewarding to change

when to shorten and when to lengthen. It’s a natural progression for them then to fences.” Tom ensures that the horse progresses at its own pace, but there is one vital factor >> www.tracktotrack.com

33

THE HORSEMAN

that can make an immense difference to his work: “If a horse arrives with us very well done it stands them well. The weight falls off them when they begin to work. If they’ve simply been left grazing in the field they are very backward and wouldn’t usually be ready to race at their best until six or seven. A two year old that AUDRA AND TOM BUSTEED has been well fed as a yearling would have been in training in O’Grady was looking for Horses could be here for up September and cantering by an amateur to replace to three months recuperating December. If they’re broken in Mouse Morris who’d turned from tendon injuries.” December they’ve no chance professional. I started riding of a summer run. By April or May winners – point-to-pointers decision from the start that they’ll start to fall away and and bumpers.” I wasn’t going to pack them they’ll be dismissed very early in and just put on the Flat. It’s them on the good to break walker,” Tom National Hunt says, “so we have THE ABOLITION OF LOW GRADE horses early at 21 boxes, for RACES IS A VERY GOOD THING … two and then pre-training and bring them OVER-PRODUCTION WILL HAVE TO mature horses, back each year with a maximum END WHEN THERE IS NO LONGER A to educate of nine at any MARKET FOR MODERATE HORSES. and safety. I’ve broken over 500 horses and I can count on the fingers of one hand the horses who have given us problems. We back them for the first time indoors. We get up on them for the first time, just lying across their backs, in the coral, which has very high rubber sides and deep sand.

Looking around, it’s very easy to see why.

“Safety for horse and rider is very important. We then take them down to the glen and they’re ridden for the first time in the stream. It’s the first time they’re taken down there, so it’s all new and interesting for them. The stream runs through a lovely wooded glen, so it’s very peaceful and calming. They’re so fascinated at watching their feet in the water that it takes their attention off the rider. They’re given two or three days in the stream, then their first trot and canter is up the woodchip.

Surprisingly, Tom reveals that the Flat horses are much easier to pre-train than National Hunt horses: “They don’t need half the work and are much easier to handle. The National Hunt horses are strongly built, bullish and very unpredictable. We do a lot of groundwork with them to encourage calmness.” When it comes to breaking in, Tom does things slowly, gently

of photos – the first time they’re driven, the first time they’re ridden, photos of their trips away, the ‘picnics’.”

Tom is a great believer in taking the horses out in the box for a change of scenery. “We take them to the sea. Fergie Sutherland calls them ‘picnics’.” A high priority for Tom is good head carriage in a horse: “And the first thing I do when they arrive is have their teeth checked. It’s amazing the number of horses who have never had their

teeth checked and they’re not eating right.”

TOM’S HORSES ARE EDUCATED NOT JUST FOR THE RACECOURSE, BUT FOR LIFE.

Not every horse will go on to racecourse success and Tom’s pre-training assessments are vital to owners: “Racing at all levels is so competitive now. The abolition of low grade races is a very good thing … overproduction will have to end when there is no longer a market for moderate horses. It’s ludicrous that owners fail to win with a filly then

have a go at breeding from her instead. Lots of hopeful owners send us some poor horses and we recommend they go in a different direction. “It’s lovely to see horses successful in other roads,” he says, “it’s good to see owners giving them a chance elsewhere. We do a lot of restructuring for showing, it takes a lot of work. There are no shortcuts. They need to be perfectly balanced and a good ride. But it’s good to see owners allowing them the time and work and channelling these horses in a new direction.” And that really sums up the ethos of Tom’s academy. His horses are educated not just for the racecourse, but for life.

STALLION PROFILE

There’s an old saying in racing that there is no such thing as a certainty. Ajax getting beat at 40 to 1 in the Rawson is proof enough, but probably the closest you’ll get to a ‘moral’ was Champion trainer Peter Moody ending up with a Magnus yearling in 2011.

A

FTER ALL, IT WAS Moody who trained Magnus to success in the Group One The Galaxy and Group Two (now Group One) Age Classic at Flemington, and it is Moody who trains the world’s No. 1 sprinter, Black Caviar … who just happens to be out of a half sister to Magnus!

offered at auction – Lot 78 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions for $120,000 – no one was surprised. Largely representative of the type of broodmare that filled Magnus’ initial book, the yearling’s dam, Coniston Gem, won nine races up to 1400m, including three black type races in Melbourne. Speed all the way. And, after all, as far as racing in Australia is concerned – certainly from a commercial standpoint

the first Tuesday in November. However, there are a large number of ‘money’ breeders who will be more than satisfied if the Magnus progeny are competitive over the shorter courses in the years to come. Magnus definitely has speed written all over him. He is a son of Champion Australian Sire, Flying Spur, the Golden Slipper winning son of Danehill who has now produced 77 stakes winners – 11 of them at Group One level (and all bar one at 1600m or less).

THE COLT IS A STRIKING TYPE … IT APPEARS THE ACORN HASN’T FALLEN FAR FROM THE TREE.

So, when Moody stepped up to the plate and purchased the first ever Magnus yearling 40

– ‘speed’ is the greatest currency. We’d all like to own a Melbourne Cup winner but very few out there actually breed for it.

Furthermore, Magnus’ dam, Scandinavia, was a nifty sort too, taking out the QTC Cup-G2 over 1200m, but also running placings in three Group One sprints before heading off to stud. All up, the mare had 14 of her 17 career starts in stakes company and only twice finished out of the money at the elite level.

Magnus does appear to have the bona fides. www.classictreadmills.com

Magnus clearly inherited her ‘will to win’: “the thing I really liked about Magnus was his never say die attitude,” owner/breeder Robert Crabtree commented when his star galloper was retired to stand at Victoria’s Eliza Park, in conjunction with Yallambee Stud. “He (Magnus) won the Galaxy and the Age Classic, fourth in the Newmarket with the first four across the line all breaking the track record, he actually finished in the first four in 10 Group One events, he twice campaigned in England – including a third behind Miss Andretti in the King’s Stand – and he pushed Takeover Target right out in the KrisFlyer International-G1 in Singapore. “He was the superior sprinting entire of a generation which included Takeover Target, Weekend Hussler, Apache Cat, Miss Andretti, Gold Edition, Mentality, Dance Hero and Bentley Biscuit to name just a few.” And while Magnus is the best of the Scandinavias to date, she has also produced another outstanding type in Wilander, Group Two winner of the Schillaci Stakes and a Group

winner at two in the Blue Diamond Prelude. Yet, it’s an unraced daughter of Scandinavia in Helsinge that is garnering all the press at the moment. Helsinge is making quite a name for herself with her only two runners to date yet to taste defeat! The first of them – the unbeaten Bel Esprit mare Black Caviar – is now officially rated the fastest horse on the planet following victories in the Patinack Classic-G1, Moir-G2, Schillaci-G2 et al, while her full brother Moshe was tipped out for a spell after winning his second race at Moonee Valley. Gifted with an exemplary book of mares in the spring of 2008, Moody is obviously confident that the first shall be first and stated after his yearling purchase: “is a striking type … very much like his sire. Having looked at the Magnus’ up here and quite a few of his yearlings overall, it appears the acorn hasn’t fallen far from the tree.” So yes, Moody will be hoping for much of the same from his new yearling but harking back to

With two of his first crop selling for six figures on the Gold Coast, Magnus will be well represented in his ‘home town’ with 32 of his yearlings entered for the Inglis Melbourne Premier, along with a further half dozen for Magic Millions Adelaide. The saying, patience is a virtue (allegedly) dates back to the 14th century – some 400 years before horse racing was up and running – but whoever first uttered the phrase (probably some bloke waiting for his missus to get ready!), certainly had owners and trainers in mind. >> >

I

T’S NOT WITHOUT some irony that Robbie Griffiths was 1700 kilometers away when his ageing stable star, Danzylum, took out his second Chester Manifold Stakes on Saturday 15 January.

Thing is, Robbie had had no intention of buying the colt until shortly before it had gone into the ring, but had been searching around all day for a mate whom he’d trained a winner for earlier in the day, eager to congratulate him.

Sure, every trainer … strike that … every trainer running a commercial operation, would have spent the second week of the new year promenading the Magic Millions complex on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

It turns out that when he eventually tracked down said ‘mate’, he was standing with a vendor renowned for his ability to sell ice blocks to Eskimos.

But it was at this very complex – six years to the day – that Robbie had taken the biggest plunge of his career (up until then) in securing the Danzero colt from Political Asylum for $230,000.

Long story short, less than an hour later Robbie is the proud owner of a Danzero which, on paper, doesn’t look to be a bad punt. Danzero, the first of Danehill’s Golden Slipper winners, has – by this time – produced the Group One winners Dance Hero, Danglissa and Fairway, while the colt’s mum – Political Asylum – has also done her bit by dropping the dual Group One winner Landsighting. What’s more, the colt is a deep bay with good shoulder, nice head and strong behind – lovely walk too – so he’s none too shabby in the looks department either. But is $230,000?

worth

Robbie soon informs said mate that their friendship and his courteous nature hold no sway whatsoever with his bank manager and the Danzero had better be able to run … FAST.

ROBBIE GRIFFITHS

44

www.tracktotrack.com

Starting the Danzero – now named Danzylum – at

Sandown as a summer 2YO, Robbie’s risk finished midfield before then running fourth at Bendigo behind Deledio. Much to Robbie’s chagrin, Deledio was about four boxes away from Danzlyum on the Gold Coast and had been

HE’S NONE TOO SHABBY IN THE LOOKS DEPARTMENT EITHER

bred by a really good mate in bloodstock agent, Peter Ford. Deledio had cost only $80,000 as a yearling and would win a stakes race within eight months of his clash with Danzylum. By comparison, Danzylum didn’t win his maiden – at Wangaratta – until his fourth start and second prep, but the signs were beginning to show. So much so that the trainer and his ‘mate’ were at least back on nodding terms! By the end of Danzylum’s three year old spring, he had run second at Moonee Valley and shown Robbie enough for a tilt at the UCI Stakes-LR at Flemington on Emirates Day where he finished back in the pack. A bunch of provincial wins and a frustrating run of city placings would ensue over the next few campaigns, but it was as a spring 5YO before Danzylum finally cracked it in the big smoke. Fittingly it was to a large audience as well with his redemption coming in the last at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day 2008.

While Hunter Valley leviathan, Arrowfield Stud, stole the show with its up and coming stallions – Not a Single Doubt and Snitzel – in the first big race for 2011, it was an old stager in Danzero, on the second tier of its ranks, which grabbed the spotlight at Flemington.

THE DANZYLUM CREW

Danzylum then ran a two lengths fifth in the Standish and sunned himself in the Queensland winter – including a third at Eagle Farm – but, for faithful connections, there was still quite a bit of ground to make up.

Indeed, his earnings have now shot to $588,913 and his owners and trainer no longer have to eat at Maccas (although the latter has often been known to dine under the golden arches by choice).

Amazingly, at a time when In the Chester Manifold, trainers are considering – even chapter two, Danzylum again for their very took up his front good horses – running position that six year olds and was never INDEED, are in the twilight going to be run DANZYLUM’S of their careers, down under the Danzylum turned EARNINGS HAVE cool riding of the proverbial Luke Currie. Not a Single Doubt’s brilliant filly, Karuta Queen, has risen to the top of Australia’s 2YO rankings with her sizzling victory in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast ahead of Snitzel flyer Schiffer. Congratulations to trainer Neville Layt (whose wife, Barbara, said after the race it’s only taken him 40 years to become an overnight success) and to Stuart Ramsey’s Turangga Stud for breeding the filly.

For Danzero (above) though, the son of Danehill shows no signs of slowing down. Having just completed his 16th year at stud at a fee of $16,500 (his highest was $33,000 in 2006), Danzero is the sire of 37 stakes winners (seven at Group One level) – at an admirable 4.5% stakes winners to runners – and has produced the winners of $52,440,423 in no less than 14 countries. www.tracktotrack.com

2011 GOLD COAST MAGIC MILLIONS REVIEW

STEADY

AS SHE GOES Every summation of the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale – thus far – has been tempered by the tragedy surrounding the Queensland floods.

R

IGHTLY SO. GOLD Coast tradition may call for celebration, with the events surrounding that week being a supposed microcosm of the thoroughbred industry, but the tremendous loss of life, hearth and livestock is a sobering reminder that backing a winner in the last or picking the right hat to wear is not the be all and end all.! Still, for all the deference to those who suffered – and will continue to suffer – because of the floods, it was business as usual from 11am on Wednesday 12 January with the first of the Magic Millions lots passing through the ring.

48

www.tracktotrack.com

Actually, ‘passing through the ring’ is a poor choice of phraseology given that only one of the first 26 lots failed to reach its reserve. Indeed, despite a catalogue of 674 for the first four sessions – minus withdrawals – the first hour of the sale pretty much supplied the tale of the tape … a steady average, equitable prices for our leading stallions, plenty of interest in first season sires, healthy competition among the domestic buying bench and, thank heavens, participation from Irish and South African buyers (largely dispelling fears of global absence due to the strength of the Aussie dollar).

PETER AND SARAH MOODY

Probably the only thing of significance missing from that first hour was Asian interest, albeit rectified by Lot 50 with

2011 GOLD COAST MAGIC MILLIONS REVIEW

the Bahen Bloodstock purchase of a Testa Rossa. There were the inevitable lulls throughout the four sessions, but fittingly the sale finished with a bang when Hong Kong’s Thomas Li forked out $440,000 for a Street Sense colt in the last 20 minutes on Saturday night. Yes, the sale average of $124,403 was down on 2010, but only by 3.9%, while the aggregate of $62.5 million was also 6% shy of last year. However, in the wash up, the clearance hovered around the 82% mark and one suspects that incoming Magic Millions CEO Stephen Silk would have grabbed that result with both hands prior to the hammer falling on the first lot. “The sale has gone very much in line with our expectations,” Silk noted immediately following the fourth session.

“We were cautiously optimistic that the sale would be around the figures of last year – and we went close with the average and gross figures falling only slightly. “The clearance rate tonight of almost 85 per cent was excellent and we’re thrilled with the overall clearance rate. “The high Australian dollar was obviously an issue with a number of international buyers – but we still had strong interest and activity from our clients who flew in from abroad.” It’s hard to imagine a sale without Gai Waterhouse leading the charge and the Champion Sydney trainer again led the way with 19 buys for $4.2 million, but the newly formed Connolly Bloodstock was very active with 22 lots for a spend of close to $3 million. Others to make their presence felt were Peter Moody (9 lots for $3.29 million), Anthony Cummings ($2.97m) and Ingham Racing ($2.05m). From a global perspective, the Hong Kong Jockey Club was most active with $2.5 million hailing from offshore, while Andy Williams’ World Wide Bloodstock from South Africa chipped in with $1.6 million. Buyers from Singapore, Ireland and Japan also played their part.

Leading buyer by aggregate was champion trainer Gai Waterhouse who signed for 19 lots totally $4.2m. Second was Peter Moody whose nine purchases totaled $3.29m while Connolly Bloodstock (NSW) signed for 22 lots for a total spend of $2.98m. Other buyers to spend over $2 million include Anthony Cummings ($2.97m), Hong Kong Jockey Club ($2.5m) and Ingham Racing ($2.055m). Industry oracle, John Messara, headed off some criticism about stallion fees at the pass on the Arrowfield website (see sidebar), but as for the first season sires, Street Sense took the honours with 9 sold at an average of $136,944. Darley stablemate Bernardini was next in line with an average price of $115,417 for 12 sold and full marks to Makybe’s Purrealist that kicked in with an average of $108,438 for eight sold. All up, not a bad sale and if the Gold Coast Magic Millions is to be used as an industry barometer (and it surely is), then 2011 is shaping up as ‘stable’ and, at the very least, shouldn’t be sending too many breeders to bed with nightmares. MEMORY LANE

You're pulling my leg A

You know you’re getting old when the publisher of this venerable mag wasn’t even born before dingoes were nicking babies from Ayers Rock campsites and Norman Gunston was Australia’s No. 1 investigative reporter. Yep, nostalgia ain’t what it used it to be, so we’re probably testing the demographic a bit by penning a feature on the year of 1961.

52

www.tracktotrack.com

D M I T T E D LY, Racing Victoria went all out to promote the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup last November – rightly so – but this year also marks the 50th anniversary of some rather memorable and bizarre events across this mortal coil. On the international front, JFK was sworn in as president of the United States, Alan Shepherd became the first American in space, Barbie got a boyfriend when Ken was introduced and, believe it or not, Princess Di was born and would have celebrated her 50th birthday on 1 July. Locally, the trams stopped running in Sydney, Bob Menzies was returned to power for the sixth time, Four Corners got a run, Dame Joan Sutherland was Australian of the Year, Col Joye and Judy Stone were top of the pops, Hawthorn won the flag in Melbourne, St George its sixth

straight premiership in Sydney and the pill went on sale (for those of you already bored with this article, some might say it was released five years too late!). As for the racing caper though, it would be a memorable year in many respects with Lord Fury the first horse to lead all the way in the Melbourne Cup, while Tulloch made an emotional farewell to racing in the Brisbane Cup. But this was also the year that the Totalisator Agency Board opened its doors in Victoria (thanks largely to the lobbying of Sir Chester Manifold) and it’s worth remembering for those of you who now use the TAB’s iPhone app, a visit to your local TAB branch – devoid of race telecasts or brodcasts – saw your wager filled out by hand … in triplicate. However, 1961 was the year of Queensland jockey Mel Schumacher … for all the wrong reasons.

But then the walls came crashing down. Steering Blue Era in the AJC Derby, Mel’s vigorous riding saw his mount first past in the post in the prestigious blue riband and it appeared the unassuming hoop could chalk up another ‘major’.

Years later, Summer Fair’s trainer Leo O’Sullivan recalled Hill coming back to scale and saying he was going to protest:“I said,‘come on Tom, they don’t uphold protests in big races’. “But Tommy insisted Schumacher pulled his leg twice over the final part and that he nearly fell off Summer Fair.”

THE CHIEF STEWARD WAS STAGGERED BY THIS AND HE SAID: 'ARE YOU SURE HILL?' AND TOMMY HILL SAID, 'MR BURKE, I'D KNOW IF A SNAKE BIT ME.' was a push, not a pull and he’d only done it because Hill was “crowding him”. sure Hill? And Tommy Hill said, Mr Burke, I’d know if a snake bit me. So Burke said ‘what have you got to say Schumacher?’ and Mel said … ‘well, that’s preposterous’.”

Despite the illegality, many remain in awe of Schumacher’s actions: “Infamous though it was, foul ride though it was, that’s the greatest ride I’ve ever seen,” Presnell summarised. “Mel

“You’ve got cameras and everything today. It’s not like it was back then when we had no cameras and 28 runners. You could nearly do what you like … depended on how game you were.”

Then Burke says: hang on – let’s take a look at the head on footage … What? Can you imagine what was going through Schumacher’s mind at that time? “Mel went as white as a sheet,” Presnell recalls. “Whiter than my shirt.” It turns out that head on patrol film had been introduced at Randwick that very day and, in fact, they had difficulty setting it up and only got the camera running as they turned for home in the Derby. Therefore, stewards could see Schumacher reach over and grab Hill’s leg, leading O’Sullivan to remark: “The funny thing is, one of the stewards said had there not been the film 54

Reliving the episode on the television series The Track years later, Schumacher said: “I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe they had one. It was just one of those things. You see bike riders do it, you see runners do it and it just, this time it just happened to be on film and we got caught. What can’t speak, can’t lie.

Fortunately for Schumacher, the life sentence was reduced, initially, to 10 years and then to six.

MEL SCHUMACHER

Schumacher was able to get this horse past the post first. He grabbed hold of the other

He would return to the track and take out the 1974 Doomben 10,000 on Charlton Boy, 1985 Oakleigh Plate on Mr Illusion and 1989 Queensland Cup on Easy Now to show all and sundry that he’d lost none of his skills in the saddle, but unfortunately for Mel, he’ll forever be remembered as ‘The Shoe’ on the wrong leg.

TREADMILLS Due to a chronic inability to refuse “one last drink”, yours truly stumbled out of bed on New Year’s Day with a rash of resolutions. You don’t need to be Einstein to work out what topped the list, but definitely prominent in the top three was GET FIT!

H

ENCE, considerable time has been allocated to sourcing decent exercise apparatus … particularly given Resolution # 1 had pulled up short before the sun had crossed the yardarm on 1 January.

obviously, Australasia … pretty much everywhere.

‘fingertip controlled’ variable elevation from 0-7 degrees.

The roll call of disciples is also ‘telling’ … Bart, Gai, Lee Freedman, Arrowfield, Mick Kent, Lloyd Williams, Stephen Gray in Singapore, South African trainer Michael De Kock et al.

Now, it should be pointed out early in the piece that Bill Lindsey has not spent the past quarter century devotedly finessing Classic Treadmills to assist chubby editors that are not one with nature.

While Classic Treadmills are also designed for camels and cattle, as far as this demographic is concerned, they have proved hugely beneficial for those of you with racehorses and yearlings, both as a training aid (less risk of musculoskeletal disorders) and diagnostic tool (particularly leg and back problems). Great for pre-purchase examinations such as gait analysis and performance profiling, including heart rate monitoring and lactate testing.

Hailing from a rural background, Bill Lindsey reckons that: “Classic Treadmills have been developed and designed with safety in mind and are built with high quality components and top class workmanship.

No, Bill’s Treadmills are dedicated entirely to those who transport themselves around on four legs, not two. And, what’s more, Classic Treadmills Australia Pty Ltd has ticked off all its resolutions with flying colours and the wholly owned Australian company now has a presence in the nation’s leading stables and stud farms. In fact, the CTA stamp is now seen in 15 countries – South East Asia, United Kingdom, Japan, North America, South Africa and,

Coming in a range of models (with optional extras), the Classic Treadmill range allows smooth acceleration up to 60km/h, front and rear access to allow maximum airflow, hot dipped galvanized finish (of industry quality) to ensure long lasting protection, a patented cushion slider bed and, importantly,

“It’s an economic labour saving device … safe and easy to operate, with the minimum of maintenance. “Bottom line, the machine needs to be strong, reliable, cheap to run and easy to use … but most of all, it needs to keep going day after day.” A list of specifications for each model (along with a more comprehensive explanation of features) is available at the Classic Treadmills website: www.classictreadmills.com or you can contact Bill Lindsey direct on 07 5446 0938. Now, if I can just find one that travels at 5km/h and comes mounted with a TV!
