t the time of going to press a number of trainers’ and jockeys’ premierships were going right down to the wire, but we’re particularly interested in the outcome of the Australian Horse of the Year for the 2008/09 season. Last year 6-time Group One winner, Weekend Hussler, was a lay down misere for the gong, despite Apache Cat having lifted five at racing’s most elite level.

However, for the first time in years, there doesn’t appear to be a clear favourite. Both Niconero and Theseo have won three Group Ones apiece, while 10 horses – Apache Cat, Gallica, Maldivian, Metal Bender, Purple, Rebel Raider, Samantha Miss, Scenic Blast, Takeover Target and Vision and Power – have won a pair.

Niconero and Theseo both have valid claims, particularly as the former’s treble included an Australian Cup, while the latter won two at weight for age, plus the time honoured Epsom. And Maldivian won the Cox Plate which carries considerably more weight than the 59kgs he lumped at Moonee Valley. That said, Apache Cat has now won eight Group Ones in the past three seasons and Scenic Blast set the world on its ear when he won the King’s Stand in England, turning his two Aussie Group Onesto to a total of three. But I’m going for Takeover Target : it’s his last hurrah and reckon they’ll want to send the old bloke out on a high.
An outstanding athlete, GREENWOOD LAKE was a Group One winning 2YO in North America and a three quarter maternal brother to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile-G1 winner and high class Australian sire Success Express (32 SWs, inc. 8 G1 winners). Greenwood Lake is already the sire of over 70% winners to runners in USA while his first Australian bred yearlings sold to $110,000 in 2009. Greenwood Lake stands this season at Racetree at a fee of $8,800 inc. GST.
August also spells the first day of the foaling season (officially anyway) and a number of owners will be seeking the best ‘housing’ options for their mares and foals. Track to Track is here to help and you can check out our agistment feature on page 22.

RIC BUTTLER’S a toiler. A highly s u c c e s s f u l businessman, he’s always loved the ponies and, operating out of his Rangal Park Stud at Euroa, in North East Victoria, Eric has managed to breed some very speedy neddies. Few, if any, would have given him as much joy though as the mighty mare, Jacqueline Rouge, who captured the Tattersalls Mile-LR at Eagle Farm on 18 July … her first visit to the winners’ circle in almost two years. But the emotion of the black type success (and considerable bump in terms of commercial appeal) is probably outweighed by another factor. After all, Jacqueline Rouge is almost a ‘chronicle’ on Rangal Park’s history over the past two decades. Purchasing Rangal Park (formerly Napier Park Stud) in 1991, Eric secured Group One winning sprinter, Keltrice for stud duties when the Kenmare stallion retired from the track in 1995. Covering 85 mares in that first spring, one of them was Eric’s Sydney winning Nassipour mare, Jovan who, in turn, produced a filly the following August.
It’s fairly safe to assume that expectations weren’t too high initially with the top price for Keltrice’s first crop of yearlings in 1998 reaching $60,000 (and somewhat fittingly, that honour went to Tony Noonan who purchased the colt from Mavournae, a Group winning half sister to multiple Group One winner Spartacus … more on Tony in a tick). But, lo and behold, the Keltrices literally burst from the barriers with the Jovan filly – Northeast Sheila – winning her first two starts at two (both at stakes level), while there were four other black type performers in that initial season including Sally Magic, runnerup to Testa Rossa in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. Not surprisingly, the following year saw a number of six figure Keltrices go through the sale ring before the gloss wore off. Retaining Northeast Sheila, Eric sent the mare to End Sweep in the Hunter Valley (producing the winless Street Music) and Danzero the following spring (this time having a bit more luck with High Intensity, who won six, including one in town for Robbie Griffiths). In 2002, Eric shoved his best foot forward and imported the flashy Nureyev stallion, Ne Coupez Pas, a five time winner in >>

S-LR), nine placings and over $300,000 in stakes from 28 starts.
Although some sons of Nureyev are ‘on the nose’ in this part of the woods (despite his incredible strike rate north of the equator), Eric is quick to point out that Ne Coupez Pas has leap frogged quite a few of his peers with a winners to runners ratio of 69% and became Champion Victorian First Season Sire with only 12 runners.
As for Jacqueline Rouge …
Placing the filly with Tony Noonan, Jacqueline Rouge won her debut outing at two and then first up at three over 1200m at Sandown.
ERIC BUTTLER
He then doubled up with the state’s second season premiership with 15 winners from 30 starters.
A product of the initial mating between Ne Coupez Pas and Northeast Sheila, Jacqueline Rouge was consigned to the 2005 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney and was knocked down for $80,000 with Eric buying back into the filly.
Two of those runners were Satin Robes and Jacqueline Rouge. Despite showing early brilliance before racing on at three and four, Satin Robes only won one of his first 13 outings, but gave plenty of them a shake, including six stakes placings and two fourths at Group level. She would end her career with three wins (including the Kensington
It was to be a stellar season for ‘Jackie Red’ who, despite doing little in two runs that spring, bounced back in the autumn with three city wins and three metrop seconds, plus a close up third to subsequent Group One winner Juste Momente at Werribee.
It was more than enough to see Jacqueline Rouge crowned Super VOBIS Horse of the Year for 2006/07 and the future appeared very bright. However, another victory would elude the mare for three days short of two years. That’s not to say she didn’t have her share of near misses: a lip second to Afterburn at Moonee Valley (in the midst of that’s
mares four straight wins in town), seconds at Caulfield and Sandown, a fourth at Flemington in the Lets Elope-G3, a very unlucky fourth in the WFA Stocks Stakes-G2 at Moonee Valley (beaten just on a length by Tuesday Joy and Devil Moon) and a short head second in the Herald Sun-LR at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day last year, finally earning black type. Sending the mare north for the tail end of the autumn carnival, Jacqueline Rouge wasn’t far off Court in the Sapphire Stakes-G2 at Randwick in April and gave some promise of what was ahead when third to Chinchilla Rose in the Dane Ripper-G3 at Eagle Farm at the end of May. Despite finishing near the tail in the Winter Stakes-G1, Jacqueline Rouge put in another solid performance in the Glasshouse-LR on the Sunshine Coast, running fourth to Lucky Luna and, indeed was on the second rung of betting for the Tattersalls Mile-LR. Taking her to the lead right from the jump, Stathi Katsidis pinched the race with game, front running tactics, giving Jacqueline Rouge her sixth victory and perhaps – perhaps – a reprieve from the breeding shed for another 12 months. At the time of going to press, Eric Buttler was unsure as to what they would do with Jacqueline Rouge, but had a number of options open (it’s amazing how black type mares can get competing studmasters salivating!). “We’ll make up our minds in the next few days but I wouldn’t mind seeing her race on,” a relaxed Eric explained. Who knows? After Keltrice (Northeast Sheila) and Ne Coupez Pas (Jacqueline Rouge), he might be just waiting for another first season sire to make the decision for him! www.tracktotrack.com

DARBY MUNRO

www.tracktotrack.com
special feature
‘Demon Darb’ was well named. Few jockeys polarized the public quite like David Hugh (Darby) Munro … the hero of the stands one minute and the bloke they couldn’t stand the next. Ride like a demon or demonized. JACK STYRING profiles the enigmatic hoop who was considered by the best to be the best.
W
H E N CHAMPION j o c k e y s G e o r g e Moore, Athol Mulley and Ray Selkrig declared that Darby Munro was the best jockey they had ridden against, it just about settles all arguments. He was the one punters wanted to follow: the big name jockey had few peers. Standing just 5 feet 3 inches (160 cms) he nevertheless commanded attention wherever he went – a confident swagger on course and off it. Munro truly was a public figure … police waved him through traffic, while lords and ladies listened to his every word. Born David Hugh Munro in 1913, Darby’s family moved from Melbourne when he was 12 months old after his father Hugh accepted an offer to take up training at Randwick, where he would become one of Sydney’s leading trainers. Young David was riding track work for his dad at just 10 years of age and even the great Jim Pike was heard to say “this kid is something special”.
Veteran trackmen were in awe of this wonderkid and it certainly didn’t escape the eye of leviathan owner-punter Eric Connolly who asked Hugh if he could take young David to Melbourne to ride work for him. It was about this time that David was given the name of Darby, to save confusion at the stable where another David was employed. Young Darby was not all that impressed with schooling and all he wanted to do was to become a jockey, so Hugh let him go.
punters were concerned … when he rode a winner they cheered, when he got beat they hooted. But nothing compares with the 1946 Epsom Handicap when Darby rode hot favourite Shannon and missed the start by 12 lengths. Long before the horses pulled up it was obvious that Darby was in for a rough time with punters lining the mounting yard fence 20 deep.
Right from the start, Darby had the uncanny ability to surmise when a horse was ready to win and Connolly would support the information heavily.
You could hear them at Botany Bay! Race books – anything they could lay their hands on – were hurled at Darby and three irate punters jumped the fence, one almost making it to the jockeys’ room before the coppers collared him.
Being involved with Connolly meant that Darby had a taste of high living at an early age: and some say it never changed.
A visibly upset Darby said: “I rode Shannon harder than any horse in my life and all I got from the punters was abuse.”
Munro eventually returned to Sydney, where he rode for many years and won all the major races.
Official starter, Jack Gaxiau, would later admit he had not seen Shannon, standing some distance behind the barrier, when he released the field.
While he never chased the limelight, it certainly chased him though. There always appeared to be a love-hate relationship where
Two days later, however, Darby was back in the good books, riding Shannon a treat to win the George Main Stakes. >> www.tracktotrack.com

special feature The same thing happened a short time later when Oriental was beaten into fourth place in a Welter, but jeers turned to cheers a fortnight on when Munro captured the Melbourne Cup on Russia. Whether demonstrative crowds – positive or negative – affected him much, it was difficult to gauge: more often than not he was poker faced as he walked to the scales or jockeys’ room.
When questioned, Darby reply was: “you haven’t included the second and third prizemoney”. Badman wrote out another cheque.
Darby wasn’t always popular with owners and trainers either.
There was always a strained relationship between Victoria Racing Club’s chief steward, Alan Bell, and Munro and they had quite a few run ins.
He wanted his own way, making it clear he would pick his own mounts, and had no qualms about changing rides if offered a better choice and disliked accepting a definite engagement weeks prior to an important race.
Finally, Munro really fell foul of Bell, and the stipe rubbed the jockey out for two years, along with owner Frank Spurway and trainer Danny Lewis, for not allowing Vagabond to run on his merits in the Burwood Handicap at Caulfield.
On the other hand if the owner was a big punter and had Darby on his side they were pretty formidable.
Vagabond was a good colt, but had a mind of his own … which he didn’t always use to the best advantage.
“He’s tough”, explained a leading Sydney owner, “but we can’t afford to fall out with him … he’s too good a jockey”.
We all knew that Munro did a few things along the way that could deemed questionable, but this was not one of those occasions.
You could fill a book with Darby anecdotes, but one of the favourites is the time George Badman, owner of Beau Gem, pestered Munro for weeks to ride his colt in the Victoria Derby.
Vagabond was three lengths off the second last horse at the half mile with Munro riding cold, as that was the only way the colt could be handled. Vagabond was beaten a head.
Out of desperation, Badman offered the entire stake if Munro rode the colt and it won.
Both Spurway and Lewis were subsequently cleared, but Munro’s appeal was dismissed.
Sure enough, after a stirring struggle from the top of the straight, Beau Gem won by a head and, that evening, Badman entertained friends, including Munro, at the Menzies Hotel.
After serving his two years he rode for a short while on the US west coast, then crossed the Atlantic with the intention of riding in England.
After a short speech the winning

cheque was handed over to Darby, who politely tore into in several pieces and allowed it to flutter to the floor.
www.tracktotrack.com
However, that didn’t eventuate when the Jockey Club, the highest racing authority in
Britain, would not grant him a license. The reason given was that Darby had failed to gain clearance from Australia, but the most likely explanation was interference from Australian officialdom. Darby Munro was a big time jockey, a box office attraction to racing when crowds were at a premium. He rode the winners of almost every important race in the country: three Melbourne Cups and five Cox Plates, which most likely would have been seven had he not been under suspension when Young Idea and Hydrogen won for the second time. As a jockey, Munro was strong with great balance, and a pure master in weight for age races … he had the rare ability to slow up a up field and increase the pace when it suited him. Racing was good to Darby Munro, and he was good for racing, but he paid the supreme price for fame, dying at the age of 53 from diabetes … the result of continuous wasting. His funeral was the biggest seen in Sydney for many years. Those who had cheered – and jeered – stood silently as the funeral procession passed. A fitting tribute to one of the most outstanding and colourful jockeys in Australia’s turf history.

Andrew Clarke is facing an uphill battle to fund Living Legends, but as Track To Track reveals, the “professor” has spent a lifetime fighting the good fight.
F
OR A BLOKE w h o s e incredibly vast body of literary research lends itself more toward sterile academia than raw emotion, Professor Andrew Clarke is very passionate about what he does.
Interstate sojourns with Legends, picnics, bush walks, schools programs and new training – even Sunday gigs for the Hume Winter Musical Festival – have been employed to shed light on the plight of an initiative designed to celebrate the stars of yesterday who provided race fans with so much enjoyment.
Indeed, by his own admission, the ‘face’ of Living Legends and lifelong contributor to veterinary science, tears up every time he watches the promotional video featuring Might and Power, Fields of Omagh, Better Loosen Up et al.
Since its official opening in October 2006, Living Legends has been seriously under funded and came perilously close to flat lining with the financial impact of the equine influenza outbreak in 2007. However, momentum is building for a long term future for Living Legends despite initial governmental and industry inertia. Grass roots support is growing and Living Legends has secured a new principal partner in Eliza Park, while close neighbours including Melbourne Airport and Hume City Council have also rallied to the call for support.
But then again, the Living Legends CEO role is more than a job to Andrew. Much more. As the International Home of Rest for Champion Horses struggles for financial viability with it’s very existence at stake - Andrew, with his board, is making it his ‘mission’ to get the train back on the track. So much so that he’s prepared to give almost anything a whirl, busily brainstorming family activities and developing strategies at the historic Woodlands property near Melbourne airport which plays home to Living Legends.
It’s certainly a far cry from the late 70s when veterinary graduate, Andrew, established a private practice at Shepparton in north east Victoria. Getting itchy feet, Andrew shifted to England three years later, starting out as a research assistant at the University of Bristol, eventually getting
a Fellowship in Animal Husbandry. In England Andrew received funding for his work from Robert Sangster, when he was involved in the development of the famous Manton House facilities at Marlborough. He also worked with Sheik Mohammeds. Ireland’s powerhouse organizations Coolmore Stables and Ballydoyle Stud. After eight years in England, Andrew was offered a directorship in the Equine Research Centre at the University of Guleph in Ontario, Canada. And that’s pretty much where he spent the 90s: an integral decade in the Professor’s professional development. It was during his time in Ontario – benchmarked by his appointment as CEO in 1996 – that Andrew established and followed through a strategic plan which involved the successful lobbying of government funding. While at the University, Andrew initiated three major projects: diagnostic imaging, nutraceutical research and a three year longitudinal stud of the growth and development of racehorses. Community involvement in Canada included chairing the education committee of the Royal >> www.tracktotrack.com

Heading back to Australia in November 2000, Andrew was appointed Professor of Equine Studies at the University of Melbourne and, in the ensuing six years, his legacy includes a major refurbishment of the clinical departments, highlighted by the installation of a new nuclear medicine facility, construction of surgery, medicine and training amenities, plus a major overhaul of hospital stabling with a state-of-the-art quarantine facility. After his tenure at Melbourne Uni, Andrew was sought out as a research consultant for the allimportant Parliament of Victoria Economic Development Committee 2006 inquiry into the Viability of the Victorian Thoroughbred/Standardbred Breeding Industries. The impact of these committees is clearly subjective, but it perhaps best illustrates Andrew’s ability to catch the ear of bureaucracy, yet have the ‘on ground’ experience and respect to co-ordinate a logistical nightmare. And for those of you who have witnessed the animation of Carbine at Champions: the Australian Racing Museum, Andrew assisted with its development – bringing to 21st century life the athleticism of a 19th century legend. 36

Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, the largest study of its type in North America.
Andrew has also acted as a coordinator of the Horse Health Education Program at Equitana Asia Pacific in 2005 and 2007, was a founding member of the Victorian Horse Industry Advisory Committee, sits on the board and is veterinary director (as well as CEO) of Living Legends, is Vice President of the Geelong Harness Racing Club and, of all things, was the founding President of the Geelong Cougar Ice Hockey Club (obviously a hangover from his ‘Canuck’ years!). Yet for someone whose idle hours would be few and far between, Andrew has been amazingly prolific – and diverse – as the author, co-author or editor of over 150 reference texts, national and international conference proceedings, peer refereed journals and industry publications. Topics covered include the Atlanta Olympics, musculoskeletal soundness, infectious respiratory disease
and racetrack fatalities.

and
Although his continuing fight for Living Legends funding has Andrew Clarke very much front and centre at the moment, his largely unsung research respiratory disease and racetrack fatalities may well be his enduring legacy. For starters, respiratory disease costs the thoroughbred industry alone in millions of dollars each year: affecting foals right through to racehorses. Andrew’s veterinary jargon has yours truly crying for mercy, but safe to say that the publication of his research in peer reviewed journals and veterinary/horse husbandry text books – where he demonstrated the relationship between the air quality of stables and the incidence of and severity of respiratory disease – saw the introduction of a scientifically validated basis of air quality measurement. >>

stallion profile
“
A STALLION OF UNTAPPED potential,” is how Debbie Power of Bella Park Thoroughbreds describes the regally bred Count Albrecht. Named after a famous Prussian army man, the 12-year-old has called the Rockhampton stud his home for the last twelve months and Power is very much looking forward to the arrival of his first locally bred group of foals.
40
www.tracktotrack.com
“We are very excited,” she enthused – hoping that Count Albrecht’s youngsters inherit their sire’s playful temperament and “eye-catching” good looks. A 16.1hh bay, Count Albrecht is, according to Power, “a stunning looking horse,” one whom she was happy to provide a home when he came on the market a year ago. At the time Debbie and her husband owned just one broodmare with no thoughts of standing a stallion but the opportunity was presented to them and they have no regrets.
“We have gone from one mare to a stallion and ten mares in a year,” she said – “it just keeps building up!” Retained to race by his breeders Arrowfield Stud, Count Albrecht showed good potential on the track – twice successful in Randwick trials prior to his debut. Racing only six times, he displayed city class ability and was able to break his maiden in very easy style over 1400m at Hawkesbury – racing away by nearly four lengths in class record time.
stallion profile
“He absolutely blitzed them,” said Power – “he showed a phenomenal turn of foot.” Well regarded by trainer John O’Shea and by Arrowfield’s John Messara, Count Albrecht was never quite right – having required a life saving operation as a foal. A large foot abscess meant that the young horse’s sole had to be almost all cut away – leading to a short racing career hindered by soundness issues. “If he had remained sound he would’ve gone on to bigger and better things,” said Power – “but then if that happened, we wouldn’t have him!” Retired to stud in 2003, Count Albrecht served only small books of mares but with excellent fertility. From just a handful of starters he has been represented by seven winners including the consistent Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast winner Sigurd who only just missed out on the prize at his most recent outing a couple of weeks ago. Count Albrecht is by the highly successful and royally bred Mr Prospector stallion Geiger Counter, sire of 52 stakes winners including the Australian Gr.1 winners Gold Guru, Reactive, Minegold, Rarotonga Treaty and Hard To Cat.
A half brother to the dual Gr.1 winner King Pellinore and the Gr.1 winning successful stallion Thatch, Geiger Counter – who passed away when based at Chatswood Stud, Victoria nine years ago – hailed from the world’s most prolific stallion family, that of Sadler’s Wells, Fairy King and Nureyev. Which is one of the reasons he was chosen as the mate for one of Australasia’s finest broodmares – Lady Giselle. An imported daughter of Nureyev and the stakes winning Val de Loir mare Valderna, a half sister to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Detroit (in turn dam of the Arc winning successful stallion Carnegie), Lady Giselle has certainly made her mark in this part of the world. Of her 12 progeny to race, eight were winners – two at Gr.1 level. In fact winners of the same major race, the Australian Guineas – Baryshnikov taking out the 1995 edition and Zabeel successful five years earlier.
Of course the latter needs no introduction as a stallion. From his Cambridge Stud base he has proven an all time great – siring 121 stakes winners including an amazing 38 Gr.1 winners. Too many to list here he is the sire of some of the best horses to race in Australia and abroad in recent times – the likes of Octagonal, Might And Power and Vengeance Of Rain.
Also the sire of reigning W.S Cox Plate hero Maldivian, Zabeel is, already mentioned, closely related to Carnegie who has also excelled at stud – siring 16 stakes winners including the Gr.1 victors Tuesday Joy, Carnegie Express, Vision And Power, Perlin and Amalfi. Which means that Count Albrecht boasts stallion strength on both sides of his pedigree and Power is hoping it is just a matter of time before his genes shine through. Bella Park Thoroughbreds Ph 0400 242 611 - KRISTEN MANNING
An exceptionally consistent stallion boasting a winners-torunners strike rate in excess of 84%, Geiger Counter has sired winners all around the world – Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, America, Canada, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and Sweden.

DUNSTONE Hanging out your training shingle in Victoria’s competitive cauldron can be a daunting task, but the affable and well versed LEIGH DUNSTONE is confident he’ll be able to make his mark.
F
U N N Y HOW LIFE turns out some times.
L e i g h Dunstone’s dad, Bill – a bloody good jockey in his day –
rode in and around Melbourne and decided to take a three week holiday in Tasmania. That was back in the mid 1940s and he never left, becoming one of the Apple Isle’s leading jockeys and riding well into his 50s.
Leigh, on the other hand, had tasted quite a bit of success in Tassie as a trainer, but decided to have a three month break in Melbourne, working for Tony Vasil at Caulfield. That was back in 2003 and, now that he’s out on his >>

Deciding to try his luck back in Tasmania, Leigh trained there for five years and garnered his fair share of success. But you can’t compare apples to oranges and, with stake money on the wane and a desire to mix it with the best on the mainland, Leigh snared a job with Tony Vasil as Assistant Trainer. They were halcyon days at Chez Vasil with the likes of Elvstroem and Haradasun keeping the stable constantly in the news cycle and, quite regularly, the head trainer ‘on the road’.

And one of them is bearing clear testimony to his training prowess. Hammer Trigger, a 4YO son of Marwina, had raced on six occasions for his owners (“a great bunch of people”), never finishing within a bulls roar of the winner.

Triple I
T WAS DURING a twelve year stint in the United States that horsewoman Carol D’Silva noticed how all-out Americans can go in promoting their business. Whilst showing Morgan horses, Carol would marvel at the money spent by owners and stables – staff decked out in expensive outfits colour co-ordinated with the horse’s

gear. Colourful logos and signs, luxurious rugs, decorative wooden gear boxes – you name it, the Americans had it! Back in Australia, Carol – due to a hip problem – could no longer work hands-on as much with horses as she desired. Declaring herself “not the sort of person who can just sit around,” she set about establishing a small saddlery and the business of Triple Crown Horse Wear.
Employing two helpers – Donna and Kate, Carol started to promote to racing and showing stables the concept of colour co-ordination. Gear – such as blinkers, lead ropes, halters and rugs – made in the same style and colour as a trainer or owner’s silks. As well as clothing for staff – caps, vests, shirts, jackets – all tailored to give the professional look that in the past has been the domain of only the biggest stables.

Whilst Carol does “all the running around” for the business, a small team of employee’s are in charge of the custom made rugs and embroidery – trainers or horses names able to be added. The business has been running for three years and Carol has been delighted with the response from racing and show people – “it has just gone boom!” she laughed. “Trainers appreciate their staff looking really good and so do their owners,” she said.
STORY
Crown confident, Carol assures, of their quality – “we use only the best materials and challenge you to find a better made product in the market!” Based at Ourimbah Shop 1, 35 Pacific Highway, Ourimbah. Triple Crown also offers an Internet order service at www. triplecrownhorsewear.com.au.
As well as catering for the well groomed racing or show person, Triple Crown sells all sorts of horse gear, as well as jackets and accessories for the pampered pooch.
Triple Crown also provides rugs to racing clubs as trophies – both attractive and practical so that they can be used rather than just be admired – “trainers love them,” Carol said.
Carol, along with her husband, races and breeds a few horses herself and thoroughly enjoys her participation in the racing game – “we just love going to the races,” she said – adding that she also thrives on her work.

European Champion 3Y0

A dual Gr.1 winning son of Danehill, Danehill Dancer has really made his mark at stud in both hemispheres – siring 95 stakes winners including
the local Gr.1 winners Choisir (himself faring well at stud), Private Steer, Light Fantastic and Arapaho Miss. Bred on a 4 X 4 cross of Northern Dancer, Barbajuan has as his third dam the Canadian Champion 2Y0 Filly Par Excellance and this is the family that has produced one of Australia’s most promising young stallions in the shape of Charge Forward.

For those on a budget looking for a well bred stallion from a proven sire line, four-year-old Izmir should appeal. Bred by renowned nursery Tyreel Stud, this 16.1hh handsome bay is a son of the outstanding Roberto stallion Red Ransom – one of the best shuttling success stories.
Whilst not a star on the track, Red Ransom has excelled at stud, siring 93 stakes winners including the local Gr.1 winners Charge Forward, Duporth, Red Dazzler and the exciting Typhoon Tracy. And what a family Izmir hails from. Not only is he a full brother to the Silver Slipper Stakes-Gr.2 winner Domesday, but he can boast amongst his relations the likes of big race
winners Xaar, Senure, Blush With Pride, Rags To Riches, Peeping Fawn, Thewayyouare, Chief Contender, Aviance, Denon, Chimes Of Freedom, Aldebaran, Good Journey, Spinning World, Saddex, El Gran Senor, Try My Best, Bahamian Pirate, Domedriver, Yagli, He’s No Pie Eater, Hurricane Sky, Al Maher, Umatilla, Platinum Scissors and super sire Redoute’s Choice.
KHELEYF
Bay/brown, 2001 Green Desert (US) – Society Lady (US) (Mr Prospector US) Standing: Darley, NSW Ph: (02) 6543 9001 www.darley.com.au 2009 fee: $27,500 (incl gst)
If ever a shuttler was born to appeal to Australian breeders it was this fellow – a speedy two-year-old, a Gr.3 winner at Ascot, a member of the Danzig sire line from a great family. And not just any great family, but one that has excelled in this part of the world – its members
including the Australian bred success stories Encosta de Lago and Flying Spur. Between them the winners of four Gr.1 races and the sires of 128 stakes winners (including 26 Gr.1 winners), Encosta de Lago and Flying Spur are understandably two of Australia’s most popular stallions. And they are not the only
high class horses from Kheleyf ’s family, his third dam Fanfreluche the most famous of Northern Dancer’s daughters – and a mighty matriarch. A son of Green Desert (sire of 89 stakes winners), Kheleyf is already proving his worth in the UK – siring 57 winners from his first 113 starts including the stakes winners Percolator, Playfellow and Captain Ramius.

First Season Sires Part 4 cont. REDOUTE’S DANCER
Bay, 2003 Redoute’s Choice – Condescendance (US) (El Gran Senor) Standing: Touchstone Farm, WA Ph: 0421 831 781 www.touchstonefarm.com.au 2009 fee: $5,500 (incl gst)
As a multiple Gr.1 winning Danehill stallion who has sired 54 stakes winners (15 Gr.1 winners), it is little wonder that Redoute’s Choice continues to be in demand with breeders and buyers. And little wonder again that his sons are proving extremely
popular all over Australia – this fellow debuting this season in Western Australia. A lightly raced winner of four of nine, Redoute’s Dancer (a $230,000 Magic Millions graduate) was seen at his best winning the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby and the Gr.2 Championship Stakes at Ellerslie. A winner from 1600m to 2400m, Redoute’s Dancer is bred on an exciting 5 X 4 cross
of the acclaimed matriarch Best In Show – fourth dam of Redoute’s Choice and grandam of Redoute’s Dancer’s dam sire El Gran Senor. Redoute’s Dancer hails from an excellent international family, his grandam Condessa winner of the Gr.1 Yorkshire Oaks and also dam of the Japanese Gr.3 winner Biko Pegasus. Other topliners to emerge from this family include the Gr.1 winners Tout Seul and Allangrange.
WAR PASS
Bay/brown, 2005 Cherokee Run (US) – Vue (US) (Mr Prospector US) Standing: Widden Stud, NSW Ph: 02 6549 9999 www.widden.com 2009 fee: $22,000 (incl gst)
Beaten just twice in seven starts was this exciting sprinter/miler, a horse with a superior turn of foot and a ton of class. Taking out the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile by a stunning 4.5 lengths, War Pass also won the Gr.1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont. And on the way he won his lead up races in a canter, allowances
at Saratoga and Gulfstream Park by 5.5 lengths and 7.5 lengths – speed to burn! Crowned the Champion 2Y0 Colt of the United States, War Pass is a son of the US Champion Sprinter Cherokee Run – Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winning sire of 38 stakes winners. A member of the Blushing Groom sire line, War Pass is out of the stakes placed Mr Prospector mare Vue, also dam of the Gr.1 Spinaway Stakes winner Oath, in turn dam of the
Gr.3 winner Honest Man. This is a prolific family that has also produced the Gr.1 winners Levee, Shuvee, Meneval, Sacahuista, Ekraar, Bayou, Slew O’Gold, Croco Rouge, Polonia, Siberian Summer, Silver Ending, Trusted Partner, Dress To Thrill and Talking Picture. And it has tasted success in Australia with the Gr.1 winners Champagne and St Reims – as well as producing Weekend Hussler’s outstanding sire Hussonet.
