Evolving Dynamics of the Asian Gas Market Challenges of Sourcing, Integration and Sustainability

March 23-24, 2012

India’s biennial flagship event for the natural gas industry

AGPS 2012: Overview March 23-24, 2012

Evolving Dynamics of the Asian Gas Market Challenges of Sourcing, Integration and Sustainability Prospects for Asian Economies Over the past decade, Asia has emerged as the major growth market for energy resources, particularly for natural gas. Demand for cleaner and cost-efficient sources of energy is expected to increase due to the high economic growth in the Asian economies. Already a major market for international natural gas business, these high growth nations will continue to be aggressive contenders for global energy resources. In fact, between 2008-2035, their demand is expected to increase at a CAGR of 4.9 percent and reach nearly 1,244 billion cubic metres (bcm) by 2035 (see chart overleaf). To respond to the rising demand of the emerging economies, it will be important for the international gas suppliers to forge partnerships with gas constrained regions. Stronger gas supply networks, long-term gas sourcing contracts, access to advanced technology and investment options will be important to attain a stable and attractive gas market and ensure steady supply for the buyers. The development of a corresponding transportation and distribution infrastructure may also require transnational collaborative efforts.

Recent Developments Progress on regional pipelines, e.g., the TAPI (Turkmenistan-AfghanistanPakistan-India) gas pipeline project is an encouraging development. It is projected to boost economic integration between energy abundant and energy deficient economies. In addition, technological advancements such as the floating storage re-gasification unit (FSRU) and floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) are likely to change the dynamics of the natural gas marketplace.

AGPS 2010 witnessed unprecedented success with the participation of 60 speakers, 40 partners and 400 delegates from 12 countries

Primary Natural Gas Demand in Non-OECD countries by the year 2035 (in bcm) Latin America 258 8%

Africa 173 5%

Middle East 632 20%

E. Europa/ Eurasia 876 28%

Asia 1244 39%

Why Asia Gas Partnership Summit (AGPS)? To identify the opportunities for increasing cooperation and interdependence, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and GAIL (India) Ltd. with the support of the International Gas Union (IGU), initiated the Asia Gas Partnership Summit (AGPS) in 2003. AGPS has brought together global gas leaders to deliberate issues related to: l Gas sourcing, transportation and distribution l Policy and regulatory frameworks, inter-governmental and regional collaboration that ensure secured demand and supply l International natural gas management, customer management systems and buying and financing practices l Tariff and pricing mechanism in the Asian context l International gas laws and regulations l New technologies, applications of natural gas and alternate gas sources

Asian countries, including India, are projected to play a key role in the global energy market and offer tremendous potential for growth of the natural gas industry

AGPS 2012, built around the theme ‘Evolving Dynamics of the Asian Gas Market: Challenges of Sourcing, Integration and Sustainability’ promises to provide a much larger platform to deliberate and promote a sustainable market that benefits economic prosperity of the region as a whole.
