DIRECT MAILER PROCESS BOOK

ARTISTS’ GARAGE SALE BY: TRACY CONOBOY 04-22-14

IN ORDER TO BEGIN THIS PROJECT, I FIRST LOOKED AT EXAMPLES OF DIRECT MAILERS IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE POSSIBILITIES OF THIS PROJECT. MANY WERE ELABORATE AND SOME INCLUDED ENVELOPES.

AFTER DECIDING TO DO MY DIRECT MAILER ON AN ARTISTS’ GARAGE SALE, I CAME UP WITH VISUALS RELATED TO THE BRIEF. I STARTED TO THINK ABOUT GARAGE SALES, ARTISTS, STARVING ARTISTS, AND CITY LIFE.

ARTISTS

GARAGE SALES

Paint brush Easel Palette Paint Starving artist

Signs Items Cheap items Flyers

CITY LIFE

Graffiti Buildings Crowds

I DECIDED TO TAKE MY VISUALS AND COME UP WITH WAYS TO PORTRAY IT IN A WAY THAT WOULD BE VISUALLY APPEALING. I SKETCHED OUT MY IDEA OF HAVING A GARAGE SALE SIGN STUCK ON A WINDOW. I THOUGHT EACH CONCEPT NEEDED TO BE COMPLETED SO I ILLUSTRATED MY IDEAS ON ILLUSTRATOR AND INDESIGN. THE FOLLOWING BOXES ARE THE FORMS I MADE. I FLIPPED THE PAGES SO THEY COULD BE VIEWED EASILY. HOWEVER, BECAUSE I FOLDED THE PAPER, THEY WERE ORIGINALLY PRINTED UPSIDE DOWN.

AFTER CREATING THESE THREE DIFFERENT FORMS ELECTRONICALLY WITH MY TABLET, I BROUGHT THEM TO CLASS. I DID NOT GO FROM PAPER TO COMPUTER BECAUSE I ENJOY SKETCHING ELECTRONICALLY AND I THOUGHT THE FINAL FORMS WERE DUE. IN CLASS, PEOPLE DECIDED THAT THE FORM I SHOULD WORK ON FURTHER WAS THE FORM WITH THE MOUTH AND THE BURGER. HOWEVER, I HAD TO CHANGE A FEW ASPECTS IN ORDER TO MAKE THE ILLUSTRATION COHESIVE. I CHANGED THE MIDDLE PAGES TO MAKE THEM HAVE LESS RIGID SHAPES. THE NEXT PAGE IS THAT REVISION.

I BROUGHT THIS REVISION INTO CLASS AND THE UNANIMOUS DECISION WAS TO DITCH THE PASTEL COLORS AND MAKE THE ENTIRE FORM MORE COHESIVE. THE MOUTH I MADE FOR THE REVISION WAS STRANGE AND IT DID NOT QUITE MATCH THE MOUTH I USED ON THE FRONT OF THE DIRECT MAILER. MY TEACHER SUGGESTED LOOKING AT A COMIC BOOK BECAUSE OF THE COMIC NATURE OF MY ILLUSTRATIONS. THE FOLLOWING PAGE IS THAT FORM. I USED THE TYPEFACE AVENIR IN HEAVY OBLIQUE BECAUSE IT LOOKS SIMILAR TO COMIC BOOK TEXT.

ARE YOU HUNGRY AND YOU NEED ART SUPPLIES!?

ARTISTS’ GARAGE SALE SCHACK ART CENTER AND HOYT AVE JUNE 16, 2012 9 AM-6 PM

BUY USED ART SUPPLIES AND ENJOY FOOD FROM FOOD TRUCKS OUTSIDE! YEAH! WHY?!

TAKE THIS!

I USED MY WACOM TABLET FOR ALL THE ILLUSTRATIONS I DID FOR THIS PROJECT. I TRIED TO EMPHASIZE THE IDEA OF A STARVING ARTIST BOTH WITH THE PORTRAYAL OF FOOD AND WITH THE BURGER FULL OF ART SUPPLIES. A STARVING ARTIST OFTEN DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO FEED THEMSELVES OR BUY THEIR ART SUPPLIES, AND THAT IS WHERE THE ARTISTS’ GARAGE SALE COMES IN HANDY. I ALSO USED FLAT COLORS FOR THE BACKGROUNDS TO PUT AN EMPHASIS ON THE SHAPES.

THE FINAL REVISION I HAD TO MAKE WAS TO LOWER THE STROKE WEIGHT AROUND THE OBJECTS AND TO SLIGHTLY ALTER THE TALK BUBBLES. I MADE THE TEXT IN THE BUBBLES ROUNDED IN ORDER TO MAKE IT LOOK MORE LIKE A COMIC. IN ORDER TO MAIL IT, I ADDED A SMALL MAILING SEAL AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MAILER. THE FOLLOWING PAGES ARE THE FINAL PRODUCT.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON THE PROJECT

ALL IN ALL, I’M PRETTY PLEASED WITH THE FINAL RESULT OF MY PROJECT. FOR THE MOST PART, IT TURNED OUT HOW I WANTED IT TO TURN OUT. I’M GLAD I WORKED MORE ON MAKING THIS PROJECT COMIC-ESQUE. IT WAS NOT ORIGINALLY WHAT I WAS GOING FOR, BUT IT OPENED MY EYES TO THE FACT THAT MY ILLUSTRATION STYLE RESEMBLES COMIC STYLE. I WOULD LIKE TO IMPROVE UPON THIS FORM OF DESIGN AND MAYBE DO A SEPARATE PROJECT ON MY OWN TIME. IF I HAD SPENT MORE TIME ON THIS PROJECT, I WOULD HAVE FIXED THE TALK BUBBLES THAT HAD TOO MUCH TEXT. I THINK I’D ALSO LIKE TO DO MORE WITH THE BACKGROUNDS OF MY BOXES. I ENJOY THE FLAT COLOR STYLE, BUT I FEEL AS THOUGH I COULD HAVE DONE MORE WITH IT.
