Welcome to the Sale!
Welcome to the Flat Water Red Angus Gang’s 16th Annual Bull Sale. It is with great excitement and pride that we bring this set of bulls to sale day for your evaluation and consideration. Again this year, we will have the bulls on display prior to the sale and available for viewing at the Broken Bow Livestock market. Cooksley Red Angus membership number is 25621, and they became association members in 1989. Sandbur Ridge membership number is 48779, and they became association members in 1996. The point of this is to let, you, our customers, friends, neighbors, and fellow cattlemen know that we have been working on and striving towards problem free, well balanced, multi-faceted, cattle production for 35 and 28 years respectively. This commitment of time, research and investment is to bring you the best, most wellbalanced product available in the industry today!
We have seen a steady improvement in our cow herds using a balanced approach to seedstock production. The fertility of the cow herds, the ability to breed, wean a calf, survive multiple years of harsh weather, and do it all over again year after year for 10 years and more is evidenced by the number of older cows represented in the catalog. We have seen a steady improvement in the scrotal circumference’s and strength of the semen evaluation, in our yearling bulls, as well. The commitment to our customers to deliver the best product we can for the long-term profitability of your operation remains unwavering and our most important objective.
The bulls have been developed for sustainability and soundness. We are very pleased with the expertise and service we receive from Mitch Ziebell and the entire crew at the Darr Bull Development Center, near Cozad NE. Mitch and crew are very accommodating to having visitors stop in and look over the bulls. There are several breeds of bulls developed annually at Darr, and we encourage you to stop in and look things over if you are near the area.
We are genuinely thankful and appreciative of the people that we serve and the relationships we have. Please reach out to us with any questions. Our goal is your success, and we would enjoy helping you find the right bull for your operation. Fellow Red Angus Enthusiasts,
It is our distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2025 edition of the Flat Water Gang Red Angus Bull Sale in the heart of cattle country, Broken Bow, Nebraska! Despite many of the challenges that we have faced over the course of the past 5 years it is safe to say that exciting times in the beef business are on the horizon and red hided cattle continue to surge in demand!
This offering of bulls is comprised of the efforts and years of strategic breeding decisions that have been made by both Ross Knott and Ben Cooksley, with the common goal of improving their customer’s bottom line. Seems simple, right? Fast moving trends, and fads may come and go in the cattle industry, but one thing you can count on with this set of Red Angus herd sire prospect is that they are backed by a female that has earned her keep the old fashioned way! These bulls are supported by females that are required to calve unassisted, re-breed within the same interval, raise a big calf, and maintain their flesh while doing so. Flat Water Gang Red Angus is truly where “Maternal Matters”!
Sandbur Ridge Red Angus and Cooksley Red Angus take great pride in the fundamental basic principles of hoof quality, skeletal integrity, fertility, pounds of calf weaned, and overall balance and phenotype. The sires of these bulls are selected after much evaluation and pressure application to traits of industry importance that affect the outcome of the end product phase for each and every operation. A problem free calving experience, growth achievement to weaning time, and ultimate carcass improvement are all factored in this offering. The people backing the bulls are very disciplined and customer service focused as they have a devout understanding of the seriousness of your bull selection and the impact this purchase will have on your program over the next 10 years, literally.
We have listed the age of the dams that are responsible for this year’s offering to give you a better understanding of the longevity, durability, and fertility that these cattle represent. Genetics don’t cost, they pay... so invest in the type and kind of cattle that will leave a lasting impact on your program for decades to come.
We invite you to Broken Bow the 17th of March for the Annual Flat Water Gang offering. We are sure that your expectations will be met by the cattle in this offering. The Cornerstone Cow
The Cornerstone cow program is a tool for producers to utilize when selecting seed stock for their operation. The word Cornerstone is an architectural term meaning the first stone set in construction. The stone in which all the building depends. For our purpose, the Cornerstone Cow is a measure of the following:
Fertility + Production + Longevity = Profitability
This scoring model ranks the components of fertility, production to weaning, and longevity, within a herd and age group of females. The categories being scored are based upon the actual data submitted to the American Red Angus Association as a part of total herd reporting. Any cow scoring 90% or higher earns the title of a CORNERSTONE COW.
By scoring our cow herd we are attempting to provide you with an easy-to-understand value for each female in our herd. The Table below summarizes the scores for each age group of cows in production:
The definitions on the next page explain the criteria that is used in the scoring model.
MOST PROBABLE PRODUCING ABILITY (MPPA) – An estimate of a cow’s future productivity for a trait (such as progeny weaning ratio) based on her past productivity. For example, a cow’s MPPA for weaning ratio is calculated from the cow’s average progeny weaning ratio, the number of her progeny with weaning record, and the repeatability of weaning weight.
CALVING INTERVAL – The amount of time (days or months) between the birth of a calf and the birth of a subsequent calf, both from the same cow. *Calving interval of 368 or less is assigned to Donor females that are 6 years old and older. **Calving Interval of 376 to 397 is assigned to Donor Females that are 5 years old and younger.
RATIO CHANGE – The difference between the birth weight ratio within a known population to the weaning weight ratio within the same population of individuals. Ratio change for this measure is the difference between the cows actual average birth ratio of all her calves and the weaning ratio of all her calves.
AGE OF COWS – Cows can live for over 20 years, but on commercial farms the age at slaughter varies considerably. Farms with poor management, high-yielding cattle or high disease rates will slaughter their animals at a much younger age, normally after four lactations (around 5-6 years old), but sometimes after 2 or 3. Cows should be able to consistently breed and rebreed through about 8 years of age and performance should be maintained until around 12 years of age, that is when you might see a steeper decline in reproductive performance.
CALVES – These are the calves that are conceived either by artificial insemination or natural service. These calves are carried by the dam and raised by the dam within the population of the operation. The number of natural calves is an indicator of the cow’s ability to raise a calf and rebreed within their environment over a longer period.
Red Angus Guide to EPDS and Indexes
ProS ... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).
HB ..... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).
GM..... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the postweaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).
CED Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)
BW Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)
YW ........ Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value)
ADG ....... Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value)
DMI ....... Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value)
MILK Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value)
ME Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. (Mcal per Month/Low Value)
HPG Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. (Percent/High Value)
CEM Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value)
STAY Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value)
MARB Marbling predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. (Marbling Score Units/High Value)
YG Yield Grade predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade, which is calculated using CW, REA and Fat. (Yield Grade Units/Low Value)
CW ........ Carcass Weight predicts differences in actual hot carcass weight. (Pounds/High Value)
REA ....... Ribeye Area predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib.(Square Inches/High Value)
FAT ........ Fat predicts differences in the depth of backfat measured between the 12th and 13th ribs. (Inches/Low Value)
