Qatar will be making history this November as the very first Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA World Cup

Traditionally held in June and July, the World Cup is being played throughout November and December to avoid the extreme temperatures of Qatar’s summer

By the vote of 22 FIFA executive members, Qatar managed to edge out the U S A with fourteen votes to eight

Qatar will also be the smallest nation to host the tournament, allowing fans to easily travel to multiple fixtures

Everyone might think Qatar is new to the world of football, however, the Qatar Stars League officially kicked off way back in 1972 To put it in perspective, the National Soccer League (The A League predecessor) launched in 1977

The World Cup

Brazil holds the World Cup likes of Italy four titles Maradona, footballing legends alike have all played in the biggest sporting event in the world

This is where legends are made, and future stars are born Could this be Ronaldo and Messi’s last World Cup? Who will go down in the history book?

Being ranked number one in the world and qualifying in first position in the South American qualifiers, Brazil are the favourites to win. With the likes of Neymar, Vinicius Jr, Richarlson, Casemiro and more, Brazil is in no shortage of world class talent to get them the title. Although, France, having won the last World Cup aren’t in short supply of superstars either, with Mbappe, Benzema, Lloris, Dembele and co They are serious contenders and if the two teams happen to meet in the Grand Final it could be one of the most entertaining games of football we have ever seen

Let’s not forget the likes of Germany, Spain, Belgium, Argentina and England as genuine contenders for the title as well. However, injuries to several of the national teams’ key players mean an outright favourite is hard to pick

The Socceroos have by no means strolled into the World Cup finals.

After finishing third in Group B of the Asian Group Qualifiers they faced the UAE in an elimination play off. We had to move on from this disappointment and turn things around if we had any hopes of making it to Qatar

Getting a narrow 2 1 victory against the UAE meant it was time to face Peru, who were unable to achieve automatic qualification in the South American Qualifiers

Peru were the heavy favourites into this do-or-die match, in which the winner would earn their ticket to the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

In a nail biting game neither side could grab a goal, despite many close calls, which meant the winner would come down to a penalty shoot out I’m sure many Aussies were getting flashbacks to Aloisi in 2005 against Uruguay

The world was in shock The Socceroos had completed the impossible We now face an almost identical group to the 2018 campaign, against the World Cup winners France, as well as Denmark and Tunisia this November Let’s get behind the boys once again, and who knows what will happen. The World Cup Finals in November this year will hold 32 teams divided into 8 groups, consisting of 4 teams The 32 teams who have qualified for the Finals had to do so in their continental qualifiers, which began all the way back in 2019. Each continent is allocated a specific number of spots for the tournament, Europe is given 13 places, South America 4.5 places, Nort and Central America 3 5 places, Africa 5 places, Asia 4 5 places and Oceania 0.5 places.

The decimal place (the number of spots) represents qualification via the playoffs as the team from that continent is not guaranteed a spot in the World Cup Finals For example, South America’s 4 5 can turn into 5 places if a team from their pool wins their play off It can also turn into 4 places if they lose their play off.

55 European nations are sorted into 10 groups (groups of 5 and 6) and fight for 10 automatic qualification spots Each team plays each other twice and whoever finishes top of their group is awarded the automatic qualification spot

The 10 second placed teams, as well as the two best ranked group winners from the 2020 21 UEFA Nations League who did not finish second in their qualifying group all enter the play offs to decide who gets the final 3 spots. These 12 teams are split into 3 pools of 4 teams, consisting of a semi final and a grand final The winners of each get a ticket to the World Cup

Russia was kicked out of this pool due to the invasion of Ukraine which gave Poland a walkover to the grand final match

North & Central America – 3.5 Places

Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association of Football (CONCACAF)

CONCACAF qualification to the World Cup is quite different to Europe and South America as they only have 35 FIFA affiliated teams. The coronavirus pandemic also meant the format was reworked The top 5 ranked teams in CONCACAF skipped the first 2 rounds of qualification while nations ranked 6 to 35 were required to compete These 30 teams were divided into 6 groups of 5 and were only required to play each other once The winners of each group progressed.

PROGRESSED: El Salvador, Canada, Curacao, Panama, Haiti, St Kitts and Nevis

The winners were then drawn against each other in an elimination play off to decide who will progress to the next stage.

These 40 teams are divided into 10 groups of 4 teams with the winners of each group progressing into the head to head round

The remaining 8 teams were split into 2 groups of 4 teams playing each other once, the top 2 nations in each group progressing

South American qualifying is a more straightforward process There are 10 nations competing for 4 automatic qualification spots and 1 play off spot Like Europe, each team plays each other twice to determine where they finish on the ladder. The top 4 achieve automatic qualification while 5th spot must win their intercontinental play off against an Asian (AFC) team that has not automatically qualified Peru failed to qualify for the World Cup, losing their intercontinental play off against Australia

Asia – 4.5 Places Asian Football Confederation (AFC)

The AFC qualification process is similarly complicated to CAF qualifiers, the 12 lowest ranked AFC teams play two legged games, with the winners progressing to the next round The 6 winners then joined the other 34 Asian nations, drawn into 8 groups of 5 teams. The 7 group winners and the 5 best runners up progressed to the third round Even though Qatar won their group, they did not have to participate in the next round of qualifiers since they are the host nation of the World Cup

PROGRESSED: China, Syria, Australia, IR Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Japan, UAE, Vietnam, South Korea, Lebanon

The final group round consists of the remaining 12 nations that would be placed in 2 groups of 6 10 games would be played in which the group winners and runners up earning their spot in the World Cup

THE FIELD AT PLAY

Goalkeeper

Everyone knows this position. The goalkeeper has evolved from being just a shot stopper, they have become an integral part of keeping possession of the ball when playing out the back. This player is often the one talking to their defenders in order to maintain their formation.

Centre Back

Usually the strongest and most physically threatening players on the field, the centre back is responsible for blocking the most dangerous areas of the pitch against the opposing offence. Their physical presence in the air makes them great prospects for attacking set pieces such as corners and free kicks. Sometimes centre backs can play behind the defensive line as a sweeper.

A defender that plays as a left or right back, these players operate as both defenders and attackers Typically one of the most athletic players on the field, the modern day wing back is required to cover large distances to support the midfield and the forwards.

Wing/Full Back

Defensive Midfielder

The perfect blend of the centre back and centre midfielder this player has the ability to both win the ball and pass the ball. Positioned just ahead of the defensive line they usually do not cover the same distance as a box to box midfielder. This player is crucial in getting possession of the ball and setting up the attack.

Centre Midfielder

Commonly referred to as the box to box midfielder, this player has to be a sniper with their passing, have excellent technical skills and demonstrate impressive agility These attacking and defensively minded players cover the most distance on the field, helping the team in retrieving possession and by creating goal scoring opportunities

Sitting just in front of the centre midfielder this player is more attacking focused, offering their services mainly in the opposition half of the field. Highly technical and creative, the attacking midfielder is a very skilled player with the ability to make decisive passes to their forwards and even provide shots on goal as well

Winger

This is where speed and flair join as one Positioned on the sides of the forward line, this player is commonly the fastest and most skilful player on the field They’re also great finishers and strikers of the ball. Their job is to beat their defenders and create goals, either by scoring or assisting them They must also help back in defence when the opposing team have possession in their half of the field.

Goals, goals and goals. The striker is at the top and centre of the formation. They must use their speed, strength and finishing ability to score goals either from the ground or from the air. They are also expected to hold up the ball when their team is in possession when not near the opposition goal.

This is where all the nations who have made it through their continental and intercontinental qualifiers meet

32 teams are split into 8 groups of 4 teams according to FIFA’s complex process. In this system, the host nation and the top 7 ranked teams are split into different groups Also, to allow for geographical spread, no 2 teams from the same continent are allowed to be in the same group with the exception of Europe (maximum of 2 European teams are permitted in 1 group.

Playing each other once, the group winner and runners up will progress to the Round of 16. The 16 teams then play single game knockout matches in which the winner progresses to the quarter finals, semi finals and grand final.

In the knockout games there must be a winner and a loser, extra time and penalty kicks are to be used if necessary to determine a victor.

The losers of the two semi final matches will play each other before the Final to decide 3rd place. It goes without saying the winner of the grand final are crowned champions of the world. Go the green & gold!
