The weight of a name The idea of names and naming might seem to many to be a superficial and superfluous phenomenon. A name is an intangible concept and is represented only in speech through words that are ejected from the speaker, as air is pushed through the complex choreography of lips and tongue in motion, and then dissipate into the air sandwiched by silence. Or on paper, as squiggles and lines that stand as representatives or markers for the sounds we use to say things.
B
ut history, human relations, our lovers and our children show us that there is so much more to names than puffs of air and a twist on the lip. We use names to summon, to categorise, to understand, to segregate, to accuse and to label. We also use names to convey other intangibles, like love, to solidify our connections with one another, and to build on associations, positive and negative, with people, places and things. We might see a word as an expression on its own, without a history, without past implications and without a place in the world beyond the very moment it is uttered or written down. We couldn’t be more wrong. All words and names have history, some more profound than others; they all have an origin, recorded or not, and the compounded weight of a past of repeated use in many contexts, by many people, for many different reasons. When I think of the name, Timber iQ, I think of the very room in which the publication was conceived, the people with whom I shared that moment and the electric atmosphere that charged us all to put this idea into motion – to create a thing from (no)thing. However, my association with the name has changed, as it should have, since my first association with the magazine. As I write this, Timber iQ is more mine than it has ever been, it belongs more to each and every industry professional and consumer that reads it than it ever has, because as it stands, it represents the fullest, most complete version of itself, backed by nine issues of its own history that includes the cherished input, support and encouragement of a readership that cares about it. For this issue, as I ponder names and naming, I think of the iQ that completes our masthead on every cover, and can’t think of any better projects and products to have showcased here to fully represent this reference to intelligence in our name. Welcome to our tenth issue of Timber iQ. Enjoy the read. Jen

atural materials have inherent limitations. The dimensions in which timber can be acquired are wholly reliant on the dimensions of the source from which it is derived; in this instance, a tree. Different species, prevailing weather conditions over the span of a tree's life and moisture content all have a determinant effect on the quality of the final product. These variables result in a product with unpredictable qualities. With manufactured materials, however, these indeterminate variables are less prevalent and the overall performance and predictability of a structural member improves. Also, span-todepth ratios are usually greater and allow for larger, uninterrupted spans with members that are generally smaller. In a sector where technical specificity takes precedence, materials that are predictable and standardised are desirable; construction costs are minimised, lead times on materials supplied are predictable and a structure's performance can be accurately determined. Cross laminate timber (CLT), or engineered wood combines the properties of timber, manipulated to exact specifications for construction. The new main headquarters for the Swiss media group, Tamedia AG exemplifies what is possible using CLT. It is proof of a project where the design team developed unique strategies to address and embrace the material limitations inherent in timber.

Occupying a picturesque site next to Zurich's Sihl water canal, one's initial observation of the Shigeru Bandesigned building is the clear material duality; an imposing grid of natural timber forms the bones of the structure and a delicate lattice of aluminium and glass envelops it. Unifying these two very distinct elements is the grid of vertical and horizontal lines. It is a beautiful rendition of material articulation; it illustrates the architect's technical prowess at highlighting the unique properties of the materials which he selects and every material joint is meticulously celebrated. Japanese architect, Shigeru Ban conceived the idea of developing a structural system composed wholly of timber, an uncommon feature in multi-storey commercial architecture. Ban is known internationally for encouraging engagement and promoting the application of unconventional building materials, as can be observed in his earlier works that make use of materials like paper and cardboard tubes.
Photograph by: Shigeru Ban Architects Europe.
The design exhibits traditions prevalent in Japanese carpentry, whereby timber beams and columns are joined without the use of any bolts or adhesives. Instead, it relies on a custom-designed system of interlocking members. Combined with this tradition, the proficiency of Swiss wood engineering is exploited fully in order to realise a very ambitious project. The design brief called for an office building where the maximum amount of floor area should be utilised. Commercial buildings require large and uninterrupted floor areas and the spans achieved in this project are impressive, and the dimensions of the laminated timber beams themselves equally so.

Ban is well known for his reluctance to design buildings that are wasteful in regards to the materials that are used. A central tenet to his design approach is discovering new means in which the waste accumulated during a building's erection can be reduced.
Eco friendly and energy efficient solid wooden house
One strategy which can effectively reduce the amount of waste generated is by standardising the building elements used to construct the building. In this project, a series of identical timber components were developed; these were manufactured off-site, delivered to site and assembled. Pre-fabrication eliminates the need to cut and adjust elements on site and effectively reduces the amount of waste generated. When the building's lifespan has expired and the building is to be demolished, the timber components can simply be recycled and made into wood pulp. The recyclability, availability and sustainability of timber as a building material cannot be ignored and as designers are encouraged to explore alternative technologies, similar structural systems are poised to prevail.

WINDOWS
Fenestration trends for 2014 Fenestration plays a major part of the look and feel of any building. Cobus Lourens from leading wooden window and door manufacturer, Swartland, offers an overview on what is driving fenestration trends today.
F
enestration is a fundamental element of architectural design – defining both the outside appearance of a building, as well as its interior atmosphere. Cobus Lourens from Swartland, says, “The style of your home will largely dictate the style of windows you choose to include. If it is a Victorian-style home, for example, you will more than likely select wooden windows with a more traditional feel, such as sliding sash windows, for example. For more contemporary homes, streamlined window frames, with a sleek, minimalist appearance would be more suitable. However, styles aside, fenestration design is being directed by a number of other market drivers.”
1. ENERGY EFFICIENCY As the cost of electricity rises, more homeowners are looking for ways to improve on the energy efficiency of their homes. Lourens notes that windows play an extremely important part of improving your home’s insulation.
30
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2013 //
“Between 20% and 30% of a building’s heat loss and gain can occur through doors and windows. Choosing quality fenestration products, such as Swartland’s wooden windows and doors, for example, can equate to great savings on your electricity bills over the long term, as well as being an environmentally responsible choice, and one that conforms to the current National Building Regulations.” Swartland presently sets the benchmark with regards to energy efficiency in windows and doors, says Cobus: “Swartland is at the forefront of performance improvements in South Africa with regards to composite gaskets, double-glazing, and the use of water-based coatings on products. Not only are its windows and doors designed to offer the best insulation qualities currently on the market, but they are also manufactured from a very green and renewable material – wood. This ensures that Swartland’s windows and doors are an environmentally friendly choice, as well as being some of the most energy efficient on the market.”
WINDOWS
Even more importantly, however, it ensures that these products are all fully compliant with all the National Building Regulations, as well as the Consumer Protection Act.” “In order to ensure that its windows and doors are compliant with the SANS 613 and 204 (Fenestration Products) Mechanical Performance Criteria, the Ready-2Fit windows are tested for deflection, structural strength, water-resistance, air-tightness, operating forces, and the best possible energy efficiency. As a result, all Swartland’s Ready-2-Fit windows have unique mechanical property values, from A1 to A4, assigned to them.”
3. EASE OF MAINTENANCE
In fact, a recent SAFIERA (South African Fenestration and Insulation Energy Rating Association) test confirms this, stating that Swartland’s double-glazed windows are some of the most energy efficient tested windows currently on the market in South Africa.
2. GREEN BUILDING REGULATIONS In November 2011, new building regulations were introduced in South Africa as part of the steps taken towards greater energy efficiency and energy usage in buildings. Sans 10400-XA relates to energy usage in buildings and it is mandatory by law, whilst SANS 204 relates to energy efficiency in buildings and is an international best practices standard that is intended to be phased into mandatory standards within the next 10 years. Swartland’s innovative Ready-2-Fit range of wooden windows and doors are compliant with the new building regulations, explains Lourens: “Swartland’s Ready-2-Fit range of wooden windows and doors are professionally pre-sealed and pre-glazed before they leave the Swartland factory, so that when they arrive on the building site, they are ready to be installed with no further labour required to seal or glaze them. This not only saves the builder and homeowner time and money on installation costs, but it also ensures that the windows and doors are adequately protected against exposure to the elements. It also vastly increases the overall build quality – ensuring that the windows and doors are finished to Swartland’s exacting standards and therefore, ensuring that any warrantees are upheld.
Nobody wants to spend lots of time and effort maintaining their home’s windows. Fenestration products that require minimum maintenance, while still offering an attractive aesthetic, are by far the most popular choice today. In the past, wooden windows required lots of maintenance, as they had to be sanded down regularly and re-sealed. However, with the introduction of water-based sealant, Cobus notes that this is a thing of the past: “Water-based coatings are by far the best option on the market for sealing wood – they are the easiest to maintain and apply, and they boast a wide range of other benefits too.” After extensive research, Swartland found that Maxicare water-based coatings, sourced from a top German manufacturer, offer the best protection, durability, and ease of maintenance currently on the market. Benefits include: • Eco-friendly • Increased flexibility • Excellent durability • Fast-drying, quick and easy to apply • UV-resistant, non-flammable and lead-free • Stain- and water-repellent • Darker hues contain heat-reflecting pigments, resulting in a lower surface temperature of the wood – thereby reducing movement in the substrate • Contains powerful anti-fungal agents, protecting wood against fungus and rot
4. AN OUTDOOR-INDOOR FLOW One of the easiest ways of opening up your home to the outdoors is by installing fold-a-side doors. Fold-a-side doors, such as those available from Swartland, are a kind of folding door that comprise various ‘sections’ or hinged doors that can be opened and pushed aside so that they stack in a concertina-style on either one or two sides of the opening. The fact that they can be opened and neatly stacked away to the side makes them a great option for maximising the free flow of space between the patio and the indoor living areas, and creating a feeling of openness that marries the two spaces.
// OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2013

WINDOWS
Cobus says, “Sunny days call for long, lazy lunches in the garden and late-night entertaining under the stars, and by installing fold-a-side doors in your home, entertaining outside couldn’t be easier. Otherwise known as stacking or concertina doors, fold-a-side doors allow you to open the interior of your home to its outdoor surrounds – creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. Furthermore, their floor-toceiling composition will make the most of your home’s outdoor views and allow an abundance of natural light into your interior spaces.”
5. MAXIMISING NATURAL LIGHT Unlike days gone by, when windows were small and the interior of residential homes tended to be dark to keep them cool in the hot African climes, today, the more natural light that a home can let in, the better. Cobus says, “There is no better form of illumination in any space than natural light – an interior awash with natural light looks bright, warm, inviting, and just generally more appealing than a dark interior. With the introduction of various forms of window glazing and other forms of insulation, it is possible to let the sun’s natural light stream into your home, while still remaining cool in summer and warm in winter.” He says that fenestration is being used in a variety of interesting ways to ensure that natural light is maximised indoors: “There are any number of ways that windows can be included in the design of a home to maximise the influx of natural light – they can be stacked alongside or above
32

one another, included in angled recesses, or custom-built to fit a particular space. The possibilities are really endless!”
6. ORGANIC MATERIALS In line with the ‘green’ trend, more homeowners are opting to use materials with an organic flavour to them in the design and manufacture of their home. Cobus explains, “Wood is currently experiencing a huge revival in the built environment. There are very few building materials that boast the environmental benefits of wood – compared to alternative building materials, the manufacturing of wooden building products produces less air and water pollution, requires less energy across their lifecycle, and generates less CO2 emissions. Simply put, wood is a fantastically green building material – it is a sustainable material that boasts low embodied energy and low carbon impact, it is durable and long-lasting, with great insulating qualities, and it is aesthetically beautiful to boot.” He says that the concept of green building has become increasingly mainstream over the last few years as more consumers become aware of the benefits of choosing ecofriendly building options: “Green building pivots on choosing materials that reduce a building’s energy consumption and decreases the negative impact it makes on the environment. Apart from the long-term financial rewards inherent in making environmentally-friendly options – going green is also a good way of doing your bit for the environment.”

The Kreg Deck Jig™ utilizes a more straight-forward approach, creating an incredibly strong wood-to-wood bond through precisely placed self-tapping screws. Get the deck you want, without any unsightly exposed nails or screws. The Deck Jig's specialized self-tapping screws are driven at a precise angle into the edge of your deck boards so they stay hidden from view. Where seasonal changes might force traditional fasteners out of place over time, Kreg screws stay protected below the surface for a longer lasting deck. By coupling the Kreg Deck Jig™ with composite decking, you'll get a deck free of cracks, splinters, and ‘pop-out’ fasteners.
DRILL. DRIVE. DONE! Securing a deck board with the Kreg Deck Jig™ takes only three simple steps. First, you drill holes into the edge of your deck board using the specialized stepped bit, guided by the jig's hardened steel drill guides. Next, you drive the specialized self-tapping deck screws through the same drill guides and into the joist as the depth collar precisely controls the depth. That's it, you're done! You've just created an incredibly strong and sturdy joint with no visible fastener.
All Kreg Deck screws feature a KTX #1 Square Drive to reduce cam-out, a flat-bottom head which resists splitting, and a self-tapping tip which drills its own hole as it's driven. Deck Screws are available in two weather-resistant finishes: Protec-Kote™ and Stainless. Protec-Kote™ screws feature three anti-corrosion layers that protect against rusting in a wide variety of decking applications. A good choice for a wide variety of decking applications, including ACQ treated lumber. For even more protection, choose Stainless. Kreg Stainless screws provide the best protection against corrosion in the long-term.
FEATURES • Easy-grip handle gives you a secure hold and complete control over each and every joint. • Hardened Steel Drill Guides keep your specialized stepped bit and driver bit at the precise, optimal angle. • Handy Spacer Rings ensure accurate deck board spacing for proper drainage and longer deck life. • Three separate Drill Guides let you install deck boards in a variety of hard-to-reach areas.
Works with a wide variety of decking materials For the best results, we recommend composite deck boards which prevent shrinking, swelling, or splitting. Select a solid composite material with no machined grooves. Also works great with native softwoods, such as Redwood, Cedar, Pressure Treated Pine, and ACQ, along with certain Tropical Hardwoods like Ipe, Red Balau, and Ironwood.
DECK SCREWS Kreg Deck Screws were designed specifically for use with the Kreg Deck Jig™, although they can also be used as simple face-screws for a variety of outdoor projects.

T
engbom Architects has designed a student unit, which is affordable, environmentally friendly and smart, both in terms of design and choice of materials. The project is a collaboration between wood manufacturer, Martinsons and real estate company, AF Bost채der. To meet the needs of students in a sustainable, smart and affordable way was the key imperative when Tengbom, in collaboration with students at the University of Lund, designed this student unit of 10 square metres. The unit is now displayed in Virserum Art Museum. In 2014, 22 units will be built and ready for students to occupy. To successfully build affordable student housing requires innovative thinking and new solutions. The area in each unit is reduced from current requirement, 25 square metres to 10 square metres through legal consent. This truly compact-living flat still offers a comfortable sleeping-loft, kitchen, bathroom and a small garden with a patio. Through an efficient layout and the use of cross laminated wood as a construction material the rent is reduced by 50% and the ecological impact and carbon footprints is also significantly reduced.

Energy efficiency is a key issue when designing new buildings. Choosing the right material and manufacturing methods is vital to minimize the carbon emission and therefore wood was chosen for its carbon positive qualities, and as a renewable resource it can be sourced locally to minimize transportation. The manufacturer method was chosen because of is flexible production and for its assembling technique which can be done on site to reduce construction time. “By exhibiting this well planned and sustainable student unit we want to challenge the conventional views and show new ways of thinking. What is good living? What materials can we use? To meet the future in a sustainable way we must be innovative in all aspects and have the courage to break new ground, says Linda Camara at Tengbom Architects. The exhibit is open to the public until the 8th of December.

Adjusting the cutting angle on the Makita LS1018L Sliding Compound Mitre Saw All Makita Mitre Saws are carefully adjusted and aligned in the factory, but rough handling may have affected the alignment. If your tool is not aligned properly, the following simple steps can be followed. MITRE ANGLE Push the carriage towards the guide fence and tighten the locking screw to secure the carriage. Loosen the grip which secures the turn base. Turn the turn base so the pointer points to 0° on the mitre scale.
Lower the handle fully and lock it in the lowered position by pushing in the stopper pin. Square the side of the blade with the face of the guide fence using a triangular rule, try-square, etc., then securely tighten the hex socket bolts on the guide fence in order starting from the right.
Then turn the base slightly clockwise and counter clockwise to seat the turn base in the 0° mitre notch. (Leave as it is if the pointer does not point to 0°.) Loosen the hex sockets bolts securing the guide fence using the socket wrench.
Make sure the pointer points to 0° on the mitre scale. If the pointer does not point to 0°, loosen the screw which secures the pointer and adjust the pointer so that it will point to 0°.

BEVEL ANGLE Push the carriage towards the guide fence and tighten the locking screw to secure the carriage. Lower the handle fully and lock it in the lowered position by pushing in the stopper pin. Loosen the lever at the rear of the tool. Turn the hex bolt on the right side of the arm two or three revolutions counter clockwise to tilt the blade to the right.
Carefully square the side of the blade with the top surface of the turn base using the triangular rule, try-square, etc. by turning the hex bolt on the right side of the arm clockwise, then tighten the lever securely. Make sure the pointer on the arm points to 0° on the bevel scale on the arm holder. If the pointer does not point to 0°, loosen the screw which secures the pointer and adjust the pointer so that it will point to 0°. Adjust the 45° bevel angle only after performing the 0° bevel angle adjustment. To adjust left 45° bevel angle, loosen the lever and tilt the blade fully to the left. Make sure that the pointer on the arm points to 45° on the bevel scale on the arm holder. If the pointer does not point to 45°, turn the 45° bevel angle adjusting arm bolt on the right side of the arm holder until the pointer points to 45°. To adjust the right 45° bevel angle, perform the same procedure as that described above This process is specifically for the Makita LS1018L. However, similar processes are followed for the Makita range of mitre saws as well as other manufacturers’.

US hardwood lumber and veneer exports to South Africa top USD 4.5 million in the first half of 2013 American hardwoods offer wide diversity, high performance in applications and documented sustainable credentials
U
SD 4.5 million worth of American hardwood lumber and veneer were exported to South Africa during the first six months of this year, according to the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the leading international trade association for the American hardwood industry.
48
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2013 //
This marks a 7 percent increase over the same period in 2012. Of this total, exports of American hardwood lumber reached a value of USD 2.73 million and a volume of 3 930 cubic metres, marking a decrease of 7 percent and an increase of 4 percent respectively over the January to June period of last year.
NEWS
Direct shipments of US hardwood veneers to South Africa during the period reached a total value of USD 1.77 million, rising by 38 percent from the same period last year. In addition, US hardwood log exports to South Africa reached a value of USD 641 000 and a volume of 1 563 cubic metres during the period. In terms of species, US hardwood lumber exports to South Africa continued to be dominated by white oak during the first half of this year, although the volume shipped dropped by a significant 24 percent, as compared to the same period in 2012. White oak accounted for 45 percent of the total volume of US hardwood lumber shipped to South Africa during the six month period of this year, while it made up over 61 percent of the volume of shipments in the same period in 2012. This decrease was made up by significantly increased shipments, although still relatively small volumes, of maple, tulipwood, cherry and red oak. In addition, direct exports of hardwood veneers from the United States to South Africa were made up by a wide range of species, with significant quantities of white oak and maple in the mix. “South Africa continues to show strong demand for American hardwoods.
The building and construction industry remains buoyant in order to keep up with the demand of the growing South African population, which presently stands at over 52 million. In addition, the housing sector has also been experiencing growth in recent years, with over 2.6 million houses having been built since 1994. Apart from new construction, the renovation business is growing as well, providing a lucrative market for interiors, particularly American hardwoods,” commented Roderick Wiles, AHEC Director for Africa, Middle East, South Asia and Oceania. Confident about sustained growth in the demand for US hardwoods, Wiles undertook a trade servicing mission to South Africa in May this year. This was the first visit to South Africa as part of AHEC’s mission to increase awareness in the country. The mission saw Wiles conduct site-visits with leading importers, wood processors and end users in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. The visits, which were aimed at reinforcing trade ties with key players from the timber industry, revealed that the majority of them acquired and maintained stocks of American hardwoods. The trip also provided AHEC with an opportunity to interact with major players in the timber industry, and to emphasize the positive attributes of American hardwoods.

“Asthma prevalence in Southern Africa is higher than any other area on the continent, with more than 20% of school children across the region suffering from this condition. In South Africa asthma is the third most common cause of hospital admissions of children,” says Cipla Medpro Medical Director, Dr Nic de Jongh. Mafi offers a better flooring choice to help alleviate the symptoms of asthma and allergies by improving indoor air quality.
FLOORING
Chemicals, smoke, dust, mould, pollen and dust mites are all triggers of asthma and allergies and largely a result of poor indoor air quality. Mafi all-natural products and processes work as a system to effectively reduce these harmful and annoying environmental triggers. Mafi timber floors have the ability to improve indoor air quality due to the following reasons: • Mafi’s all-natural finish ensures the timber can breathe, filtering and cleaning the air. • The natural hygroscopic effect of wood helps regulate humidity and remove moisture that germs and mould need to survive. • Mafi floorboards are 100% chemical free with no VOCs and no formaldehyde, using only natural oils to treat and maintain the timber in its natural state. • Wood is antibacterial and self cleans. All Mafi wood floors have a special, ecological surface finish that distinguishes them from all others. The floors come in a number of various designs and constructions to suit any individual, commercial or domestic requirements for both functionality and design Living Art Floors were recently appointed as the exclusive partner for the Austrian-based Mafi Floors for Southern Africa. TEAK
What's so great about teak wood furniture? When researching buying new furniture - especially patio furniture - one will almost definitely come across teak wood. One of the first things noticeable is that furniture made from teak wood is consistently more expensive. Why?
T
he reason is that teak is valuable, both for its elegance and its durability. Beyond its beauty, it also possesses some natural properties that other woods don't.
Teak has always been a prized material. The tree that teak comes from, Tectona grandis, is native to the Tropics. Since the 7th century, it has been used to adorn residences of the wealthy and powerful. The wood's reputation was championed by the Dutch, who colonized Indonesia. They used the wood for shipbuilding, due to its excellent ability to ward off dry rot. Teak is found in the Southeast Asian region. No central government takes its teak quite as seriously as Indonesia's. Since the country's post-colonial era, the Indonesian government has appointed a corporation (PT Perhutani), dedicated to managing one of the nation's most valuable natural resources. The company maintains the official teak plantations in Java, where a predetermined number of trees that can be felled each year and, once felled, each tree is replaced with a new one. Since the best wood furniture made from teak comes from mature trees, it can take around 80 years before a teak tree is harvested. Because of this, and because teak is such an excellent wood material, old teak is often reclaimed – for example, from old structures slated to be torn down – and given new life (recycled) as furniture.

TEAK THE VALUE AND BENEFITS OF TEAK WOOD FURNITURE People often prize teak wood above other woods. But why is that, exactly? The answer lies in the natural oils and rubber found within teak. You'll find an abundance of natural oils and rubber locked right into the tight grain of the wood. All woods contain oils that protect the tree – think maple sap or tea tree oil. Teak, however, can retain these oils and its rubber, even after being felled and processed. Because of this, teak has greater naturally weather-resistant properties than just about any other type of wood. When dried to a proper moisture level – around 10% of its original content – the oils and rubber weatherproof the wood. The oils also protect the wood from dry rot, which is a common problem in older wooden furniture. What's more, the oils and rubber protect the heart of the wood from invaders like fungi and parasites that can destroy other woods. Protecting wooden furniture from such intruders requires applications of weatherproof oils and treatments − not so with teak. All of this makes teak the perfect material for outdoor furniture. As it weathers over time, the wood goes from a honey-brown colour to a silvery grey. Although teak is more expensive, you can take the money you would have spent on annual waterproofing and apply it to buying
outdoor teak furniture. Since teak is also an extremely durable and strong wood, a teak patio set owner can expect his or her purchase to last for many years. Research shows that objects made from teak more than 2 000 years ago have been found intact – astonishing for untreated, uncared-for wood. This also offsets the initial costs of teak, especially once furniture replacement costs are considered. If you decide to take the plunge and buy well-made teak heart wood furniture with low water content and that's certified to have been sustainably harvested, there's not much you'll have to do – except sit back and enjoy it. Sure, you're going to pay a higher price for your furniture, but you'll likely be satisfied with your purchase over the longterm. Indah Indo Creations (Pty) Ltd are the exclusive importers and distributors of these premium and innovative teak wood products. With summer around the corner, teak furniture will be a smart investment

Knysna Timber Homes is involved in construction on both national and international levels. Knysna Timber Homes has been involved in number of superb architectural projects and has completed a number of outstanding projects to date. House Malan.
ARCHITECTURE
Internals walls are of tongue and groove pine vertical panelling and all internal walls and ceilings are lime washed and varnished. Roof tiles are Double Roman Kalahari Farmhouse. On the ground floor level, the entrance to House van Zyl opens onto the open-plan living room, dining room and kitchen, which includes a scullery, laundry and a pantry. The master bedroom with an en suite bathroom (including bath and shower) opens out onto a covered deck, a feature of the house that envelops the entire ground level and includes covered and exposed sections right around. On the lower level floor, the second bedroom also has an en suite bathroom with a bath and shower and bedrooms three and four share a bathroom, with a shower and toilet. All three bedrooms open onto the covered deck. Work on House van Zyl started in July 2012 and was completed in October 2012. The site on which the house was built proved challenging, with the front poles under the structure measuring in at 8.5m in height and at the back end, the lower floor was very close to the ground. Foundation holes on this steep site had to be dug even deeper than usual in order gain the engineer’s approval.
HOUSE VAN ZYL Situated in Keurview, Keurboomstrand, Plettenberg Bay, double-storey House van Zyl boasts breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounds. Timber used for the exterior is tongue and groove log finish stained in a rubol mid-brown colour and all windows and doors are of Meranti timber, while decks, screens and handrails are of Balau timber. Pine tongue and groove flooring was used throughout the house.
The upper carport deck and garage’s level had to be +-1m below street level for the critical point of the ridge to fall under the 8.5m height restriction. This meant securing the road and bank with highly engineered pylons into floating slabs into reinforced brick and concrete retaining walls. This retaining wall also formed the back bearing for the floor joists. All of this work was done in-house. The big open-plan living, dining and kitchen area with its large open rafter roof and big sliding doors meant the front walls and roof needed substantial bracing to pass safety protocol. This project was awarded the Gold award in the ‘Structures larger than 220m²’ category at the 2012 Institute of Timber Frame Builders awards.

ARCHITECTURE
HOUSE MALAN Situated on the Garden Route Buffalo Bay coastline, work on House Malan, a Cape Cod style home with a local twist, began in May of 2013 and was completed at the end of August 2013. The Knysna Timber Homes team was tasked with creating a harmonious flow between the stylistically different old and new structures. The property has belonged to the family for a long time and the owners wanted to have their home completely rebuilt. The Knysna Timber Homes team removed almost 90% of the existing brick house structure and rebuilt the new house around the remaining features that the owners wanted to keep. The area of the house is 448m² and the decking area boasts an extensive 180m². House Malan is comprised of two levels, with the ground floor opening with the entrance, a lounge, dining room and kitchen, all in an open-plan format. The ground floor also houses the double garage, store room, laundry, scullery and a large TV room. The first floor consists of four en-suite bedrooms with a shower and bath in each, as well as an informal lounge extending out onto a covered deck. Exterior timber employed is Nutec handy plank with Macaranduba decking with Balau pergolas and Colorbond Ultra roof sheeting.
60
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2013 //
The team had to incorporate a large steel grid to create and sustain the large open-plan spaces on both floors. Interior cladding on the ground floor is of smooth plastered board to match the existing plastered brick walls. First floor cladding is all whitewashed tongue and groove pine for a ‘beachy’ feel. Flooring throughout the house is of engineered oak of 190mm wide and all doors and windows are of aluminium. The front door is of solid Meranti timber. A heat pump was installed for warm water with a 6500L underground storage tank. All the gutters and downpipes flow into the tank, and the water is used for the garden, the design of which is simple and elegant, incorporating the natural flora surrounding the house.
ARCHITECTURE
HOUSE DAUBOIN House Dauboin, designed by Jacques Cronje, of Jacques Cronje Timber Design and built by Knysna Timber Homes, is a beautiful addition to a very flat landscape that is surrounded by exceptional vistas across the Malmesbury valley – the very reason for the site selection. The house, with its irregular forms, is low-built and close to the ground and blends into the surrounds on approach. The site slopes downwards from the entrance area eastwards and the house responds to this with a few steps down to the living area. The roof gently slopes upwards mirroring the fall of the site. The view is framed at the top by tilting screens, which, when open, serve as a slatted pergola for shading and, when closed, provide security. Unlike the approach side, the view sides to the east and north show a clear delineation of ‘built’ and ‘nature’ by the clear solid lines of the deck edges raised above the site. The separation to the inside is gently layered; first by the change in floor texture and door openings, then the row of columns defining the rectangular form (which can be closed with the shutters) and finally with the deck edge. On plan there are three distinct areas, each roughly rectangular; the garage, the services and entrance to the centre, and the living and bedroom areas. Internally the floorto-ceiling heights and the corresponding volumes reflect a hierarchical order, with the entrance and service areas under a low flat roof, the bedrooms under a higher ceiling sloping up towards the views, the volume in the living area increasing as one steps down from the bedroom area or entrance. The structure is a combination of timber post and beam construction and timber framing.

A KNYSNA TIMBER HOME Knysna Timber Homes makes use of a timber frame building system which complies with National Building Regulations, relevant SABS codes, and is approved for bond purposes by all major financial institutions in South Africa. This system allows for architecturally innovative designs and is often combined with masonry, steel and various other forms of construction. A Knysna Timber Homes project is (on average) completed in less than a third of the time that it would take to complete a similar project using brick and mortar. All timber components used in their buildings are from sustainable resources and their methods of construction and choice of products are at the very heart of sustainable living.

Finishes and cladding options both internally and externally are limitless. Knysna Timber Homes is able to guarantee both its product and workmanship to a far greater extent than other timber construction companies who do not employ their own construction teams and have to rely on sub-contractors to construct and complete their projects. Highly skilled building teams are employed at Knysna Timber Homes on a full-time basis and they are therefore able to provide their clients with a full 12-month guarantee after handover. All timber components are preservative treated to comply with SABS standards to ensure a high quality and longlasting product.

COMPANY PROFILE
Quality drives Powafix Over the last few years, paint accessories and timber treatments company, Powafix has had very favourable financial and organic growth as an organisation. One of the key components of this growth has been a stronger focus on quality.
T
here are many aspects and certifications that form part of quality management and measurement. Historically, many organisations measured quality as a part of financial performance in some way; be that success by profit, or failure through liquidation. Traditional performance measures that are based on cost accounting information, however, provide little to support organisations on their quality journey, because they do not map process performance and improvements that can be seen by the customer. In a successful total quality organisation, performance is measured by the improvements that are seen by the customer, as well as by the results that are delivered to the shareholders. At Powafix, we realised that if we wanted to achieve even better results, we needed to be proactive in our approach, as opposed to reactive, based on financial results exclusively. In order to achieve this growth and have these improvements seen by our customers, we have started to put into place a Total Quality Management System (TQMS) to quantify, qualify, manage and measure quality in five key categories, namely, service, people, product, packaging and information.
1. SERVICE Service to our customers is one of the cornerstones of our business and we continue to look for ways to improve our customers’ experience through our entire sales chain.
2. PEOPLE A company is only as good as its people. We believe that people are a critical link in the quality chain and we continue to invest in our people by providing a stable work environment, on-going training and personal growth development. We spend almost as much time at work as we do at home, so it stands to reason that we are our employees’ ‘second family’ and we treat them as such.

3. PRODUCT
5. INFORMATION
Powafix was founded on quality products as its guiding principle. We use only premium products in our manufacturing process and constantly improve on our formulations. One major improvement is the removal of Methanol in our lacquer thinners. Methanol is highly toxic to humans. Just ingesting 10ml can cause permanent blindness and 30ml can be fatal.
Knowledge is power! We live in the information age and an informed customer is a happy and more confident customer. Our focus is on empowering the end-user of our products to buy into the Powafix brand with total faith and conviction that they are making a great purchase. From product information and advice on our packaging, to instore promotions, point of sale elements, staff training, DIY demonstrations, shows and an interactive and informative new website, we aim to engage with our customers, as well as their customers.
Methanol is a cheap additive that is used to increase the volume of the blend. We have made an ethical decision to not use Methanol in our thinners, despite the slight increase in the cost of the product.
4. PACKAGING A customer’s first impression of the quality of an item is its packaging and it is this premise that we use to determine how we package our products. A quality product deserves quality packaging that is easily identifiable on the shelf and provides a complete and informative merchandising solution that enables the retailer to sell the product with the peace of mind that they are selling quality on to their customer. Another critical element of the packaging of our line of products is safety. Morally, we cannot sell a product that might endanger the life of an uninformed person or child, and is the reason why we have introduced child-proof caps on all of our solvents, as well as a tamper proof seal.
We can never engage with our customers enough and we extend an open invitation for anyone to contact us. It is these ‘Big 5’ TQMS categories that will determine who we are and lead us forward into the ever-changing market of fast-moving DIY consumer goods. Big challenges lie ahead of us to have all of the above boxes ticked, but we are certainly on track to achieve these goals and will never shy away from any challenge to get quality products into the market place, in such a way as to leave our customers and consumers in no doubt as to who the market leaders are in this category. For more information, call 0860 254 620 or visit www.powafix.co.za.
R
We are also exploring new packaging materials for all of our products that further protect our customers from unintentional exposure caused by packaging that enables the contents to leak or sweat through.

Lonza’s wood preservative products at our treatment facility. We are proud to promote Tanapole™ as a premium pole product in all our projects and are great supporters of the ‘Keep The Tanapole Flying High™’ campaign.” Commondale Poles, located in the town of Piet Retief in Mpumalanga, has since May 1999 been operating with a vision to help local farmers realize their full potential. This is achieved by supporting the initiative to provide a renewable source of timber in the region through the sourcing of all raw materials from member growers’ plantations.

The magnificent ‘Out of Africa’ themed Bivane Lodge in Northern KwaZulu-Natal is another successful project of Biggarsberg Thatchers, where the collaborative relationship with Commondale Poles has resulted in a prime example of the end-use of Tanapole™ products. The Lodge showcases an extensive use of Tanalised™ treated wood from the roofing poles to the decking and is also expansively used in the interior design. The excellent quality of Tanalised™ treated products has therefore played an important role in the success of our projects and our relationship,” said John Smith, owner of Biggersberg Thatchers. Since 1995, Biggarsberg Thatchers have undertaken roof construction and thatching contracts that range from private homes and guesthouses to game lodges and wildlife resorts throughout KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, Mpumalanga, Swaziland and in Portugal. The thatch grass used is of the Hyperhinia Herta variety, which is of the highest quality grown in the Biggarsberg and Drakensberg areas. Annually, approximately 630 cubic metres of frostcured grass is harvested off the Biggarsberg Thatchers’ family-owned farm and a further 3 550 cubic metres is cut from neighbouring farms. This supply of readily available grass ensures that any size contract is readily met and honoured.

SG was founded by Thierry Boltz and Claude Saos from the design studio Boltz & Saos based in Strasbourg, France. WOOD.b was born from a shared passion for cycling and the everyday use of this mode of transportation by the two designers.
ABOUT WOOD.B WOOD.b is an urban bike made in France. “The choice of the wood and the steel for the frame design was very important for us,” say Boltz and Saos, adding, “We used high quality materials to create a bike that is exclusive in its design, but not in its use.”
70
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2013 //
DESIGN
A portion of the frame is constructed using ash plywood, forming the architectural structure to which high quality Columbus brand steel (stays and fork), compatible with standard bicycle components, is added. The design for WOOD.b is based on the concept of assembling steel elements around a wooden frame. This allows for a complete customization of the bicycle, and brings two materials that are known for their recyclability together in a harmonious combination. The use of ash plywood allows for great solidity, whilst maintaining a certain degree of flexibility.

DESIGN
The ash is also a very common wood in Europe, which is an advantage in terms of production, where access and costing is concerned, as well as the all important environmental impact. The steel can weaken over time, depending on the harshness of the road or ground. However, the combination of wood and steel in the WOOD.b bike allows it to offer a solid, comfortable and dynamic ride.

DESIGN
Components used are standard bicycle components that meet European quality standards, allowing for easy at-home repair or maintenance by a local bicycle shop. WOOD.b is currently available in four design styles, even if the principle of constructing a bicycle remains constant. WOOD.b is a bike made on demand to guarantee a high quality product. BSG also makes the WOOD.b bike on demand so as to accommodate every individual request in terms of colours and accessories perfectly. “We wish to continue manufacturing and assembling our bikes by hand, because, for us, this is the way to honour and preserve the exceptional know-how of the craftsmen with whom we work. Each WOOD.b is unique. It is realized for you and with you. WOOD.b is internationally patented.

Bosch South Africa Regional Brand Manager for Power Tool Accessories, Campbell Mhodi explains that the convex

cutting edge helps with precise and smooth plunge cuts into the material, by minimising vibration and friction, as opposed to the conventional multi-cutter blades with straight cutting edges. “The reinforced oscillating interface 12-point mounting system ensures that the blade is firm with a high power transfer while cutting into the material."
NEWS
What's more, the new OIS 12-point mounting system allows Bosch multicutter accessories to be compatible with any multi-cutter tools available on the market without using an adapter. "The tapered body minimises the risk of the saw blade jamming and possibly breaking in the material during operation, and that ensures exceptionally smooth and precise cuts," adds Mhodi. The multi-cutter accessory range covers applications including wood, metal, wood and metal combination, grout and abrasive materials and the newly added accessories for multi-material applications. In addition, the unique colour coding system has been defined to assist users in identifying the correct multi-cutter accessory for a particular application. Mhodi states, "Black is for wood, blue is for metal, white is for wood and metal, orange is for grout, tiles and abrasive materials and purple for multimaterials. It is now easier than ever for the user to identify the multi-cutter accessories using the unique colour coding, which is based on the same well-known colour coding used for Bosch sawing accessories." The introduction of this new range ensures that Bosch now has a complete solution for tile and bathroom renovations, automobile and ship building, trimming and repair work, and insulation applications across South Africa.

Numill's hardwoods are imported from North and South America, Europe, South-East Asia and Africa. Softwoods (predominantly pine) are purchased from local sawmills and also imported from South America and Australasia. Numill believes that sustainable forestry is the best strategy for its business and encourages customers, suppliers and partners to pursue environmentally sustainable practices. Where possible, Numill sources timber from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified suppliers and endeavours to use suppliers who comply with all environmental legislation in their country of origin. Numill has FSC chain of custody certification and will continue to engage in practices that promote responsible and sustainable forestry. Numill also offers customers a real-time, web-based, timber inventory and ordering facility. The facility allows anyone interested in purchasing timber to access its website and, once registered as a user, to drill down to determine the real-time status of Numill’s entire inventory per species, size, volumes held and availability. Once choices have been made via a few mouse clicks, the end-user will be contacted by a Numill representative to confirm the order, following which delivery will take place. A potential timber consignee can browse through Numill’s entire range nationally, and depending on what his requirements are, order when contacted by a Numill representative, and have the bundle delivered without the hassle of a long-winded and cumbersome paper trail that formerly held up the process. Customers need not make several calls, wait for faxes and emails, or wait for calls. Real-time tracking of stock levels also allows Numill to trace exact statistics of volumes available and being sold, giving fair warning of impending shortages at a given warehouse, triggering an immediate need for re-ordering or re-allocation of stock, thereby minimising the chance of Numill running out of stock and inconveniencing customers. Numill is in the process of upgrading and modernising the website, and will expand it to make it easily accessible and user-friendly on smartphones and tablets. Customers will be able to enjoy unparalleled access to information away from their desktops, further enhancing the timber procurement process. Lonza brings hope and smiles to the children of Vulingqondo Crèche The children of Vulingqondo Crèche, which is situated in the rural community of Bethania near Port Shepstone, have a lot to smile about since Lonza Wood Protection took the school under its wing six years ago.
T
hrough the devoted guidance of Lonza’s Finance Manager, Graham Ponter, Vulingqondo has developed from humble beginnings into an organized, structured and disciplined educational institution and has further benefited from exciting developments during 2012. “Last year we focused on upgrading the building with a new classroom and additional extensions to accommodate the growing needs of the crèche. The roof was thatched, which will keep the building warm in winter and cool in summer, and the grounds were graded so that newly planted lawn could replace the knee-high veld grass,” explained Ponter.
82
OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2013 //
Vulingqondo Crèche plays a vital role in the development of this community and the children identify it as a place of security and happiness. To date, Lonza has stepped in with supplies of sport and playground equipment, stationery, books, visuals and many other learning aids to assist with the educational and social development of the seventy children at Vulingqondo. The next project is to assist the crèche in becoming selfsustaining by planting a vegetable garden. Tools and seedlings will be supplied and the children will be encouraged to be actively involved in a garden that will produce food for some of their daily meals.

Excited children enjoy their outdoor activities on their new playground.
“It is always a joy to visit the school and see the bright and happy smiles that are a result of the warm and caring environment that has been created together with the teacher and helpers. Each child is nurtured, educated and fed a healthy meal every day. We hope that through our self-sustaining vegetable garden project we will give them a sense of self-worth and provide a solution, albeit on a very small scale, to the ever-present problem of hunger in the poorer communities,” added Ponter. The traditional annual ‘Graduation Ceremony’ remains the highlight of the calendar for the oldest of the group as they prepare for ‘big school’, and for the staff at Lonza, who clear their work schedule to be a part of this special occasion.
Graham Ponter (Finance Manager, Lonza Wood Protection) with Father Christmas and a group of children at the annual Christmas Party.
Not even Father Christmas misses the party along with his bag of gifts. “Caring for the community is an important part of being an industry leader. It is Lonza’s philosophy to be a responsible neighbour by contributing to the quality of life in the communities in which we operate. Our commitment to the Vulingqondo crèche is to create sustainable value through an educational facility that will form a foundation for their future schooling career. It is a rewarding experience and a privilege for the staff of Lonza to be a part of these remarkable children’s lives,” said Gerard Busse, Marketing Manager, Lonza Wood Protection.
