MONTHLY FISHING UPDATE Each year around September, I love to go to Jacobs Well with my mate Bill. We rent a cabin in the caravan park, we make some new friends and generally wind down, plus we always catch fish and plenty of them. So on September 18, we arrived and got into it, after a couple of days of full on fishing, we had next to nothing to show for it, the car park was unusually empty and not many boats on the water, we fished the Bedroom, Tabby Island, Kalinga Bank and the power lines, still not much success. Enquiring as to why things are so quiet from a local, he informed us that the beam trawlers had hit the place hard over the last three weeks, night after night and had only moved on three or four nights back, he then informed us that it would be another two or three weeks before it would pick up again, he was right. This happens on a regular basis, all along the east coast and it’s about time the government put a stop to it once and for all. A few months back I was down the Sunshine Coast having a few beers with some friends, talking fishing and methods etc, when Brian, who owned the house and a mad fisherman, said “Come and look at this”, in his garage, come boat shed, he had this enormous fish tank with Whiting, Bream and other fresh water species swimming around, he threw in a whole prawn and not one of the fish were interested. Next he cut up the prawn, put a piece on a barbless hook and all the fish went on a feeding frenzy, I know how I will be catching Bream and Whiting from now on. Just a tip you might like to try,

Tackle World have Whiting hooks with barbs on the back to hold bait, two to a packet, all set up with beads etc, these actually work and hold any bait on tight. October was a fairly good month, with some good Snapper around the 3kg to 4kg mark being caught and Hervey bay to 1770 saw a good run of long tailed Tunas. Coral Trout have been a bit scarce but a couple have come aboard along with the odd Cobia. Some great sport was had with some quality Jew pulled in at dawn and dusk in most estuary mouths. Pick of the bait has been Pilchards, also keep that berley going, and since my last article, my advice on berleying has brought good results for some readers. The Burnett has had more than it’s normal amount of small Barra with the odd good one thrown in, also some handy Trevally have been landed and the Mangrove Jacks have started to show up in the Baffle around the ferry crossing. The Baffle is fishing really well, some snodger Flathead have been landed, some well over a metre, these are mainly around the mouth and in the deeper water, don’t listen to the Rex Hunts, this time of the year the big Flatties are in the deep water. Again Pilchards and 4 inch to 5 inch Gulp in pink or white are doing the trick. Whiting are still thick and some quality Bream are about. Pumpkin seed plastic has been doing the trick on the Bream and yabbies for the Whiting. Monduran Dam has reported that the Barra have started to wake up and reports suggest that this year should fire up with a lot of Barra hiding in the shallows to warm up and Boondoomma and Cania, which is 100 per cent full, report that the Bass are starting to school up. Try using blade bait and soft plastics; again Gulp seems the go in natural colouration. As the weather warms it will be on for young and old in November with the best fishing to be done early in the month from the 7th to the 13th. If you are going through Gin Gin call into see Foxy at his Barra shop and he will put you on the right track. The Red Claw crayfish are a bit scarce still but try some really rotten meat or put some holes in a rockmelon and leave it in the sun for a few days that usually gets the Red Claw going. I will be trying a new fishing method with hard bodied floating shallow lures over weed beds with dual hooks this month; will let you know how I go next time. The next meeting and weigh-in of the Bundaberg Sports Fishing Club is at 4pm on November 13, at Burnett Heads Community Hall, Zunker Street, everybody is welcome.

LOCAL NEWS Students learn the reality of careless driving! Got something you want us to cover? Ph: 4151 1129

High school students from various schools in Bundaberg were recently shown first-hand the grim truth of what can happen if they are careless behind the wheel. The students were confronted with what can happen if they were to have a car accident, with a mock scene set up where some of their student friends were playing the roles of the injured, the distraught driver, and even the dead. With the police, ambulance, fire brigade, AGL Rescue Helicopter and Rose Chapel Funeral directors at the scene, some of the students were visibly upset to see their class mates in this position. This demonstration was held to make students more aware of what their actions and attitudes, whilst driving, can do to themselves, friends and family. The overall main aim is to save lives!

COVER STORY Wide Bay Concrete Refurbishers - Bringing your concrete to life

6

Damian Norgaard and Adam Herbert have been in the construction industry for over ten years. While working in the industry they saw a need for a professional service for flooring and concrete. Damian and Adam teamed up together and began Wide Bay Concrete Refurbishers and offer a wide range of services in a professional and reliable manner that you can depend on. Giving customers exactly what they want is something that Damian and Adam pride themselves on. Servicing Hervey Bay to Gladstone, Wide Bay Concrete Refurbishers can bring life to your concrete as well as offering epoxy flooring, non-slip treatments and more. Polished Concrete - Polished concrete offers a durable seamless floor which will pass the test of time. With a variety of finishes you can have cream, salt and pepper or the full exposed look. A clear coat can also be applied, in a gloss or semi-gloss, which is cost effective and gives you a hard wearing seamless coating. Floors can also be polished to a 3000 grit diamond, which gives an almost impervious, indestructible floor and with the addition of a hardener the hardness of the concrete is increased by 300 to 400%. This also seals the concrete and with the addition of a wax coating, the concrete is sealed even more which helps to protect your investment for years to come. Acid stains - Acid Stains can also be applied to your concrete to give you that unique look with various colours availble, can be polished or clear and will suit ultra modern homes to heritage homes. Concrete dyes - Concrete dyes give a more solid colour but by adding one or more extra colours a motley look can be achieved. Concrete dyes give you the extra advantage of being able to have an emblem or logo imbedded into the concrete which can give a professional look for businesses and a unique look for homes. Polyaspartic Paint - Compared to other products, which need four coats at a minimum, Polyaspartic Paint only needs one base coat. It is touch dry in ½ to ž of an hour, can be walked on in four hours and driven on the following day. With superior weather ability characteristics, Polyaspartic Paint offers a lifetime guarantee against any yellowing and fading, unlike other paints which tend to yellow and fade due to continued sun exposure. It can also be used over a variety of timbers, compressed fibro and other building materials. This paint can beautify an area of your home

or business by adding a variety of coloured flakes or quartz to give an almost impervious and hard wearing floor. Quartz is an extremely durable floor coating and is rated seven on the hardness scale. With more than 50 colour variations in the flakes and quartz, Damian and Adam can give you the look you want. Wide Bay Concrete Refurbishers offer a wide range of finishes with Polyaspartic Paint, from smooth to an r 12 slip resistance, which is the highest slip rating available. This paint has also been given a rating one waterproof barrier. Another added bonus of choosing Polyaspartic Paint is that there is no tyre peel, therefore no tyre marks will be left and it is stain resistant and easy to clean. Polyaspartic is VOC friendly, which means it has no volatile organic compounds, no thinners, etc. which is good for family, friends and the environment. When Damian and Adam apply their coatings they grind the concrete with diamond stone to give the best possible adhesion for all their products. Not only does grinding give adhesion but it helps to flatten and smooth the concrete for the best possible finish. By refurbishing your concrete driveways, outdoor area and/or patio, even your stairs, you will not only add value to your home or business but you will also have many years of maintenance free use. Call Damian and Adam at Wide Bay Concrete Refurbishers for a free quote on 0487 520 473 and bring your concrete to life today.

ELECTRICAL AND DATA

Finding the right home lighting for your needs

When it comes to home lighting, the choice of lights, lamps, fittings, fixtures and finishes is endless, but the friendly staff at Hayman’s Electrical can help you get the very best result for every part of your home, both inside and out. These days, recessed down lights are among the most popular choices for living areas, contributing a stylish, modern feel to any home. Down lights can also be used to highlight architectural features, even an attractive ceiling moulding, or just to add different effects with the use of different colour temperature lamps. Dimming is another way to create different moods for the various areas in your house. Pendant lights and oyster lights are other practical and attractive options for living spaces and bedrooms, as are lights incorporated into ceiling fans. Kitchen - Of all the rooms in the house, the kitchen lighting requires the most attention to detail. Food preparation and cooking areas must have plenty of clear light to ensure safety and there must also be adequate general light. A good approach is to use reflected light for general lighting throughout the kitchen and a combination of cabinet lighting or pendant lights to achieve stronger levels of light in the

work areas. There is a huge range of decorative energy efficient light fixtures for kitchens to choose from. Whether you’re looking for something traditional or modern, economical or expensive there are light fixtures to suit your needs. Children’s bedrooms - It can be great fun decorating a child’s room, but as these rooms can serve many functions, depending on the age of the child, there are a few considerations when it comes to lighting. As a general room light, a ceiling mounted oyster or pendant light with a single or twin clear light bulb is ideal. For young children, add some fun with a novelty light fitting or coloured shade. There are also wall lights and spot lights in a range of colourful designs and shapes children will love - the options are virtually limitless. Study area - choose a desk fitting to provide focused light for homework, reading and hobbies. A desk or study fitting that uses a LED lamp source is proving to be very popular. Whatever your lighting requirement, contact the staff at Haymans, no job is too big or too small.

Bundaberg receives Tidy Towns Award

Bundaberg Regional Council’s Waste and Recycling System was judged the best in the state and took out the Sita Australia Resource Recovery Award at the recent Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns 2011 Awards. The awards were presented by Her Excellency, the Governor of Queensland, Ms Penelope Wensley, AC, at a ceremony attended by Bundaberg Regional Council Deputy Mayor Councillor Tony Ricciardi. Mayor Lorraine Pyefinch said the award demonstrated Council’s professional approach in a very integral section of its regional operations. “The Bundaberg Waste Management Facility constantly produces outstanding outcomes and the work carried out by everyone at the facility is outstanding,” Mayor Pyefinch said. Councillor Ricciardi, whose portfolio covers waste and recycling services, said the award was recognition for Council’s premium approach to its waste and recycling ventures which includes mulching all greenwaste brought into the site, collecting dry recyclables and educating students about the benefits of recycling through in class presentations.

“A great deal of the credit must go to two of Council’s community partners, IMPACT Make Your Mark which runs the recycling centre and employs 24 people with disabilities in the operation and the Salvation Army which runs a woodworking workshop that re-uses timber from waste facilities,” Councillor Ricciardi said.

In2solar would like to introduce you to their newest product to hit the market

SolaKool Hybrid Air-Conditioners - Government Approved with Star Ratings

These units have the ability to both cool and heat your home throughout the year without the HUGE running costs. The benefits of SolaKool air-conditioners include: • Direct sunlight is NOT required • Depending on normal operating conditions savings of up to 80% may be achieved over a conventional system • The system operates for up to 15 hours over night after only 4 hours exposure to daylight • Efficiencies are maintained even when temperatures are extreme If you are considering installing or even upgrading your current air-conditioning systems at home or in the office here are some commonly asked questions: Can the SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioning unit be installed by a do-it-yourself? Only a qualified tradesman holding a SOLAKOOL Installation Certificate may install the SOLAKOOL Solar airconditioning system. This is to ensure that the installation is as per the installation manual and to qualify for the warranty. In2Solar has qualified tradesmen who are accredited to install your SOLAKOOL system. How does the SOLAKOOL solar air-con work at night and in cloudy weather? The SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioner works day and night and in rainy or cloudy weather. The solar panel will absorb and store solar thermal energy during the day. It only requires 4-5 hours of sunlight for 15 hours continuous operation. Is the SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioner 100% solar? NO. It still requires electric power to operate the

compressor and the fans. However, combine the SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioner with the SOLAKOOL solar thermal power system and you have a complete solar system. Warranty time and after sales service? The warranty time for SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioners is 5 years and the designed service life is 30 years. Most components are readily available locally; however, they are covered by the warranty in the warranty period. Does the solar collector need any special maintenance? NO special maintenance is required once installed. What is the difference between an inverter air-conditioner and a solar air-conditioner? Inverter technology enables the air-conditioner to operate at the most efficient compressor and fan speed when below full power. At full power it has no advantage over conventional air-conditioner. Typically, an inverter will save up to 15% of the electricity required to operate EXCEPT when it is on full power. A SOLAKOOL solar air-conditioner will save up to 80% over a conventional air-conditioning system and eliminate the high air conditioning demand at peak times. In2Solar is owned and operated by local tradesmen giving you a professional service from sale to install. If you want to talk about any of your solar requirements, either residential or commercial, give Ian and Trent a call on 1300 13 20 46.

HEALTH AND FITNESS Naturopathic Information by Rebecca Lang ND WATER

Rather than talk about Herbal Teas, I feel it is essential to discuss water. Many people I consult are not drinking enough water and may not even enjoy drinking water at all. The average person’s body is composed of approximately 70 per cent water. The body’s water supply is essential to nearly every bodily process. This includes digestion, absorption, circulation and excretion. It is also the primary transporter of nutrients throughout our body and a necessity for all building functions of the body. As we age, our sense of thirst can become dulled. Water is especially important for people who have musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis, as it lubricates the joints. If you are not drinking enough water it may contribute to excess body fat, poor muscle tone, poor functioning of organs, including the brain, joint and muscle soreness, and water retention. Drinking plenty of water will slow the aging process, prevent and improve: arthritis, kidney stones, constipation, arteriosclerosis, obesity, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes, hypoglycaemia and many other diseases. Purified water is always best but any water is better than none at all. A minimum of eight to 10 glasses a day is required. Go and pour yourself a glass now and drink it while reading the rest of this article!

Coenzyme Q10

Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring vitamin like substance in our bodies and declines as we age. It is estimated that 75 per cent of people over 50 may be deficient

in coenzyme Q10. A lack of sufficient coenzyme Q10 can lead to cardiovascular disease because without it, the heart does not have enough energy to circulate the blood effectively. Deficiencies in coenzyme Q10 have also been linked to periodontal disease, diabetes and muscular dystrophy. It is also beneficial in fighting obesity, candidiasis, multiple sclerosis, and mental function associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It also has the ability to counter histamine, and therefore it is beneficial for people with allergies, asthma and respiratory disease. Coenzyme Q10 will strengthen the heart muscle; assist in preventing and treating high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It works by increasing oxygen into cells so will therefore increase circulation, detoxification and energy. Low coenzyme Q10 leads to lower production of energy in cells. This affects not only a person’s general energy level, but also muscle power, immune function and fertility. As CoQ10 increases oxygen to the blood and strengthens the heart muscle, it will also increase stamina and endurance and is recommended for athletes. Statins are a class of drugs used to lower cholesterol levels. Their mechanism of action is to inhibit the rate limiting enzymes that is involved in acetyl CoA conversion to cholesterol. Inhibition of this enzyme also adversely affects the endogenous biosynthesis of CoQ10. A decrease of CoQ10 levels has been widely demonstrated in plasma of patients treated with statins and in plasma and tissues

in laboratory animals. Studies have also suggested that side effects of fatigue and myalgia seen in statin therapy may be a result of CoQ10 depletion. It may not be suitable to all people taking cholesterol lowering drugs, but it does need to be considered. Not enough studies have been conducted in relation to the interaction between CoQ10 and Warfarin. However, it would need to be discussed with your GP or pharmacist before commencing treatment if you are taking Warfarin. Most studies indicate a dosage of 150mg per day. This would be best to take in the morning. Coenzyme Q10 is available at a retail level, but a consultation with a naturopath may enable you to buy it in a larger quantity which will then reduce the long term costs.

Grief - Don’t be hurried

Don’t be hurried. Grief is the natural response to any loss and lasts much longer than most of us expect. There are no short cuts, magic words or magic cures.

What to expect during the first two years. There will be many peaks and valleys. There will be times when the pain of grief will be so intense that you may think you cannot stand it.

Now if we do not understand the process and the time span of grief, we may decide that people in grief are weak or lack faith. Thus we can become a source of pressure for those experiencing grief.

But there will be times when the pain is not quite as intense and there is hope of survival. There will be peaks just prior to any anniversary: Birthdays, the Wedding anniversary, or date of death or other significant events, such as Christmas. The peak will happen a few weeks before an anniversary. The anticipation of the day is usually worse than the day itself.

We may say that they are not doing well and need someone to straighten them out, to get them back on the Road of Life. Those grieving will then feel the need to show how strong they are or how much faith they have. It is this pressure that leads them to act WELL before they really are WELL, resulting in unresolved grief. Particularly in the first few months, most grieving people feel as if things are getting worse, not better or easier, that they are going downhill and not making progress. This is natural, for the pain and despair are not getting worse, it’s just the body’s defence mechanisms are wearing off and the feelings which have always been there are starting to come to the surface. This is a good sign of healing even though it is distressing. Grief is, on average, but will be different for everyone, a two year natural process of healing a broken heart. It takes time and should not be rushed.

Most of the peaks catch us unprepared and we do not know why they happen. When they hit we often fight them instead of understanding and accepting them as being a normal part of grief. Often these peaks make us think we are not making any progress at all. Give yourself permission to be wounded, for not accepting a peak as normal tends to make it more intense and increases the pain. The peaks are growing times, for we grow the most when we hurt. Experiencing a peak is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of growth. Rose Chapel Funerals can assist in providing support and direct you to a specialist to assist you in understanding your own grief. Contact us for more information on grief.

“I wanted to get the message out about Allclean’s excellent service and powerful carpet and upholstery cleaning, so I arranged to have leaflets printed and then turned to Bundaberg Leaflets Distributors to distribute them. Within days of the first area being letterbox dropped, I received much more calls than normal from that area, with some people telling me, without prompting, that they saw my leaflets and called me. I have tried other pamphlet distributors before and not received results as promising as this. Thanks Bundaberg Leaflet Distributors!”

Tech Talk & Tips One of the most common faults with a computer is hard drive failure; this can be caused by quite simply bumping your tower whilst your computer is in use. This is why you should always back up; I know I am always reminding everyone to do this chore, but when it comes to that fateful day that your hard drive crashes believe me you will wish you had taken the hint. I told you last month how to burn to disc the other way is to purchase an external hard drive and at the end of the day just copy all your important information or photos over from your C Drive to the external by just copy and paste. The other most important thing you must always do is to check that the disc burned properly or that the copy and paste worked. You would be amazed at the number of times we have had to retrieve deleted files and photos because the copies were not done and then checked. One other thing that always amazes me is that people don’t organise files etc., it goes like this, Music, Country, Rock, Pop, New Age, Blues, all in the Music Folder or photos, Family , Friends, Christmas, Holiday, in the Photos Folder and so on with your movies, emails, documents etc. By doing this you can use your search function in your start menu to locate exactly what and where they are, it makes things a lot easier when everything is organised. Here’s a tip that could save you money, ever hit the start button and nothing happens, well here’s what you can try, first check your power cord you would be amazed how many people

have called a tech out and all they have done is push the power plug in! Another fault is the power supply or capacitors are holding too much charge, it won’t turn on because it is protecting the computer, if it did fire up it would most certainly cause damage. To fix this problem pull the plug out from the wall, then push the on/off button about six times slowly, this action discharges overload power from the capacitors and the power supply, now replace the plug and push the on button to see if the computer starts, if this fails most likely it’s your power supply. Here’s a tip that can and does save a lot of grief and stress, especially if it happens at the most inconvenient time, some repair shops around town charge for a format and re-install anything from $80 plus, when, all they do takes about two minutes. Say your computer is playing up, here is what you can do, it’s called a “system restore” quite simply it restores your computer back to a previous date when it was working properly. System restore - click Start, next click All Programs, then click Accessories, click System Tools, the system restore box then comes up explaining system restore, you click next, then you will see a calendar, with another explanation, you then choose a restore point (these appear in bold on the calendar prior to the date the problem started and then click next, the computer will go through the restore process and restart, how simple is that! Lots of times this will do the trick and

save you money, but for a more serious fault take it to a computer store to avoid any damage. Here’s something you will certainly groan about, yep it is only eight weeks to Christmas, “What” I hear you say, never fear, you still have time to nip into AMS Computers and lay-by that special gift, even if it’s a new computer that you are going to treat yourself with. I was talking to the guys at AMS the other day and they reminded me that many people buy new computers at Christmas for their children, wives and/or husbands, and then spend all Christmas trying to set them up. This can be a nightmare, you have to initiate the first run, uninstall all the software they want to sell you, do all the updates and then find and copy and burn all the recovery discs. One good thing about AMS Computers is their computers come ready to go, all the setup is done for you, plus they build their own towers, do all the installation even install your internet, give you free anti-virus, spyware, Office and then back them up with a five year limited warranty, that’s service! How good is that, as far as I know AMS Computer Services is the only store which does this, so if you are thinking of that new computer/laptop for Christmas, see AMS and don’t leave it too late and be disappointed, they will even store it for you. Next edition we will talk the advantages and disadvantages of laptops and towers, if you have any problems, email: editor@tradiesandladies.com.au or phone AMS on 4154 2267.

‘We Service What We Sell’

Maintaining your scooter

With summer approaching and to enable you to enjoy the outdoors, whether it is shopping, going to appointments or just to socialise, it is important that your scooter or powerchair is maintained. One of the most important factors in maintaining your mobility scooter in good working order is to ensure that it is serviced at the recommended intervals. This will ensure not only good working order but also that the scooter is safe to use. There are however a few things which can be undertaken to help maintain mobility scooters: Keeping It Clean By lightly cleaning the scooter, with a damp cloth, you will help prevent dust, dirt, grit etc getting into any moving parts and causing wear and tear. Keeping It Dry It is inevitable that your scooter will get wet, but by drying it as soon as possible afterwards, can help prevent rust setting in. Try to avoid your mobility scooter getting wet as that can cause damage to the electronics. Maintaining the Batteries Ensure that you follow the manufacturer’s guide to charging the battery. This will ensure that you receive the maximum travel range when using the mobility scooter but also extend the life of the battery. Read the Manual Carefully Take care to fully read the manual which will give useful tips and advice on how to maintain your scooter. Ensure regular servicing to prolong the life of the scooter. It may be possible for the technician to undertake the service at your home to ensure you will not be without your mobility scooter for a long period of time. As with a car, regular servicing is beneficial both for your aid as well as peace of mind. Give us a call to book in for your service - Safety is a Priority! Another important thing to think of this summer is to stay shaded, so why not consider having a canopy and bag fitted to your scooter. We also have a variety of accessories to help make your life easier such as cup and cane holders, oxygen carriers, cushions, extra mirrors, scooter covers, just to name a few. Pop in and have a look at what we have, if we don’t have it, we can order it in for you. If you have any questions about mobility aids, please email them to: info@bundabergmobility.com.au so we can endeavour to answer them (Please include your name and phone number).

The Colour of Purple

Your monthly gardening guide brought to you by ‘Bundaberg Wholesale Palms & Plants’

The colour purple is such a prominent colour in most of the gardens around Bundaberg this spring and with trees, the beautiful Jacarandas are such a treat to look at. Purple can give such a good look to the garden. One of these beauties is the Agapanthus with its range of purples and blues in varying heights. A couple of my favourites are the Agapanthus Purple Cloud – Large heads up to 20cm in diameter. Vigorous growing variety, with intense purple florets, averaging a height of 180cm and the Agapanthus Black Magic – the darkest in the range with completely black buds opening to a dark purple floret. They reach a height of 80cm and flower later in the season. They all like full sun or part shade with good drainage. Have you ever wondered what is causing those bumps on your lillypilly leaves? It is caused by psyllids a sap sucking insect on the underside of the leaf. It looks like a tiny freckle. Turn the leaf over in the sun and gently push one of the bumps inside out. This will disturb the psyllid. If it starts moving yes it is still alive if not it should just flake away. Once the psyllid With is dead unfortunately the indent will remain 1 Day Install Of Non-Slip Seamless Floor on the leaf. This is why it is handy to prune the lillypilly and fertilize to encourage new clean Lifetime UV Warranty growth. The best way to treat is to spray with • Polished Concrete confidor or use the new beaut systemic tablets. • Acid Stains You will need to do follow up sprays to break the lifecycle of the pshllids. They do spread quickly • Epoxy/Seamless Flooring so get on top of them before more damage is • Densiproof - Concrete Water Proofing done. In the lillypilly range there are varieties • Non-Slip Treatment For Tiles that are more resilient to psyllids than others. Spring brings out many bugs that can cause • Concrete Grinding problems to your plants and we do encourage our customers to bring in a sample of what is happening to your plant so we can identify and treat accordingly. At Bundaberg Wholesale Palms we have a After massive range of spring colour plants so pop on Before VOC free & environmentally friendly out and have a look at what can improve your garden.
